By Kitty Alvarado COACHELLA VALLEY -This is not an ordinary blood drive. “Me and a coworker decided to come over and just you know to do what we can for the fallen officers,” says Indio resident Chelsea Perdomo. On this day those willing to part with a pint of blood are doing it to honor the two fallen Palm Springs Police Officers: Jose “Gil” Vega and Lesley Zerebny “It doesn’t hit you until it happens in your community so I feel like it was just heartbreaking and just sad what happened and this is part of my job as a community
member,” says Nayelli Sarabiaponce from Indio. LifeStream is holding blood drives across the valley through Sunday with some of the proceeds going to the families of the two officers killed in the line of duty. Michele Gardner from Desert Hot Springs says for her this won’t be a one time thing, “The events of the weekend have really affected everybody in the valley and it just made me want to start donating again.” For those donating this blood drive means more than the monetary donations the families will receive. “I thank them for all of their service and all my
thoughts and prayers for the families,” says Gardner. “Whatever they need that we’ll be here to support them and we’ll take care of them just how they take care of us,”says Sarabiaponce. LifeStream will contribute $10 for each blood donor to assist the loved ones of Officers Vega and Zerebny.
of our patriotic and brave military from WWII through today’s returning veterans. The American Legion Riders chapters are well known for their charitable work, which has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for local children’s hospitals, schools, veterans homes, severely wounded service members and scholarships. Since 2006 the American Legion Riders nationwide have
participated in the Legion Legacy Run to annually raise money for the Legacy Scholarship Fund, established to provide numerous scholarships to children of U.S. military personnel killed since Sept. 11, 2001. The following are committed to sponsoring this very special event for America’s disabled veterans: Continues on Page 7

Photo by Pat Krause Story & Photos by Pat Krause The annual El Paseo Pink Walk for Cancer was held on Oct. 8th with over 1200 walkers to support the cure for cancer. Men, women, children, and pets all came dressed in pink from wigs to T-shirts etc. It was a sea of pink in the Gardens Area at El Paseo. Speakers told stories of cancer survivors and the help they get and how hope for a cure is soon. Cancer
survivor Brittany Cos spoke to the crowd about her breast cancer at age 24. She spoke about the wonderful support she received through the cancer foundation, the hospital stays and Gilda’s Club. It was a very emotional speech, and you could see people tearing up in the crowd. Many survivors had their own stories to tell each other, and you could spot a cancer survivor in the crowd
as they wore several strands of pink beads around their necks. Each very proud and happy to be a survivor. Other people came to support the cancer foundation. Many have had cancer in some loved one or friend, as cancer shows no restrictions on age or race. It has touched nearly every person in oneway or another. So many others have lost loved ones to this terrible disease.

Walkers were treated to free bananas, apples, and snack bars for their walk. Other venders set up booths to give fake tattoos and pink hair sprays. The General is a proud sponsor and brought his General cartoon character in the event. Nestle Water Co. gave out bottles of Perrier’s water and instant coffee samples for the walkers. Other vendors set up along El Paseo offering free items or
opportunities to look into their stores as, they walked by. The introductions were given, and the Palm Desert High School Cheerleaders started the walk with their own chant for cancer. They also went onto the street to cheer along the walkers. Parents brought their children and even pets dressed in pink to walk. Even babies in strollers were a part of this wonderful event to help find a cure for cancer.

The BMW Ctr is located in the Thermal Club property and is only a little over 2 years old. The Complex is amazing, and I learned it is open to the public for driving lessons, driving school and racing instructions. This amazing facility is located near the Cochran airport and Ross Aviation. Ross Aviation was a partner in this event as there were about 20 private plane’s landing and guests were transported over to the driving facility. This event was timed so people attending Desert Trip could take advantage of this

opportunity to drive and learn about BMW autos. They hold a lot of corporate events too. This event was coproduced by Sheree Lillie and Luis al-Calderon. The event started with a party at the Loretta Young home on Thursday night. People and partners in this event were invited. The guests also were part of the driving experience on Sat. and Sun. Drivers were given wristbands and were told they were going to be able to take part in five different events in distinctive BMW cars. Drivers were told they could particate in the races as many times as they wished in the two hours allotted. Approximately 600 people took advantage
of this exciting event. I was fortunate to be able to be a part of the driving events. There was the Drag Race like you see on TV. Go as fast as you can and stop in the short area by the red cones. I elected to only be a passenger and let the other person drive, but I would have been able to drive each event but one. The Drag race used the BMW X6, M5, and M4 cars. There was a timed race where cars would go to a racetrack that had many curves and the fastest car that could stop in the correct area won, bragging rights only. There was a Rat Race using the 340, I cars were one car would go head to head with another car on a October 14, 2016

circular racetrack. There were two other races, but they were on the Thermal race track on the other side of the BMW racing area. The Hot Lap used the M3 cars and you wore a helmet and rode with a driver who went 130 miles an hour and took the curves so fast that the tires squeeled and the car slide sideways. What a fun scary ride. Then there was the I8 test drive in a VERY expensive car where the doors go up instead of out, again this car was going over 100 plus miles per hour. A ride soooo smooth. This is all attainable to the public and what an experience. My driver said they have the best
teen driving school attainable. Guests were treated to entertainment by The Hearings band, a DJ and another group on Sat. LuLu’s California Bistro, Rio Azul Restaurant, and Babe’s Brewhouse serviced the food and drink stations. The Buzz Box served drinks on Sun. There are 40 acres created to race. The Thermal club is building villas surrounding the racing areas where the top story overlooks the racing areas on top of the 12-foot brick wall that stops the noise from the racecars. This area in Thermal will be the one place to be in the future. I would recommend this racing experience for everyone to enjoy. www.desertstarweekly.com

Theatre Community Mourns the Loss of Gordon Davidson
The American Theatre Community joins the Center Theatre Group (Ahmanson, Taper and Kirk Douglas Theatres) in mourning the loss of Gordon Davidson who passed away on Sunday October 2, 2016. From 1967 to 2005, Davidson was the Artistic Director of Center Theatre Group/Mark Taper Forum at the Music Center of Los Angeles. In addition to his role at the Taper, he was

also Producing Director of the Center Theatre Group/ Ahmanson Theatre for 15 years and the Artistic Director of the inaugural season (20042005) at the Kirk Douglas Theatre. A pillar in the Los Angeles theatre community; he not only redefined theatre in Southern California, he was one of the founders of the regional theatre movement which has had a permanent impact on theatre throughout the country and the world. Michael Ritchie, the current Center Theatre Group creative Director, described Gordon Davidson as “one of the most renowned and respected artistic directors in regional theatre, in large part because he was one of the original founders of the entire concept. He led Center Theatre Group for 38 years and produced one of the broadest arrays of plays, particularly new plays, of any theatre in the country. Without his prolific vision for Center Theatre Group 50 years ago, the theatrical landscape in Los Angeles, and the country, would be very different, He remains one of theatre’s great leaders, and I was proud to call him a mentor, friend and colleague,” Gordion Davison received countless awards, from the Tony to his induction to the Theatre Hall of Fame on Broadway in 2000. He is
survived by his wife Judi, their children Adam and Rachel and five granddaughters,

The current production at the Mark Taper Forum is August Wilson’s “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” starring Lillias White in the title role. The play is part of a series of plays written by Wilson that explores the African/American experience, decade by decade, during the 20th century. The story takes place in the band room and recording studios of a record company in Chicago early in March, 1927. Rainey, born in Georgia in 1886, is considered the Mother of the Blues. As the play, directed by Phylicia Rashad, unfolds we see how record companies exploited her and other black performers during that time period. While the story is laced with comedic moments, potential tragedy lurks just beneath the surface. Keith David plays one of Rainey’s four backup musicians, and each actor in the group plays an instrument and sings throughout. At the Mark Taper Forum, 135 N, Grand Ave, L.A. Ends Oct, 16. The next play at the Taper will be “The Beauty Queen Of Leenane,” Nov.9 - Dec. 18, 2 016.

Gordon Davidson. Photo by Craig Schwartz. Tony Award winner Ivo van Hove directs Arthur Miller’s classic “A View From The Bridge,” at the Ahmanson Theatre through Oct.16. His stylized revival of Miller’s play was a hit in London, and went on to win a Tony for Best Revival this year. The set is sparse, with the focus not on the surroundings, but on the actors. Another interesting aspect of this production is having a portion of the audience seated on stage, serving as witnesses to what is about to unfold. Very
well done, but the audience experience might have been even better served if this intimate intense drama had been presented at the Mark Taper Forum rather than at the larger, 2000 seat Ahmanson. “Amelie, A New Musical” will be the next production at the Ahmanson from Dec. 4, 2016 thru Jan. 17, 2017. Tickets for each of these fine productions available by calling (213) 972-4400 or online at www. centertheatregroup.com.

I’ve never started a review with medical advice but in this case I feel compelled to warn people of a certain age to take a couple of Excedrin before settling in to watch “For the Record: Scorsese – American Crime Requiem” currently on stage at The Wallis. In addition, do come equipped with earplugs to de-amplify the extremely over-amplified Ben Soldate’s sound design. Deafening would have been bearable, but this was beyond the pale. The pre-show music, on the other hand, was fun as it included songs by such iconic entertainers as Dean Martin, Rosemary Clooney, Louis Prima, Bobby Darin, and Tom Jones. The towering four-tier set, designed by Matt Steinbrenner and Kyle Courter, representing “Marty’s Place,” rose from the orchestra pit almost to the rafters where the action would take place in different locations - from a cheesy bar on New York’s Lower East Side to an Italian restaurant and a Las Vegas casino. In an instant, the set transforms to the Copacabana Club in “Goodfellas,” to the Tangiers Las Vegas in “Casino,” where we see the seedy underbelly of gang life. The pre-set lighting by Dan Efros and Michael Berger dressed the stage in a light red wash. Although their lighting design, with a distinctly Las Vegas glitzy feel to it, was bursting with deliciously vibrant colors throughout the production, the portions where blinding light was aimed at the audience was not effective as people held up programs in front of their eyes to shield themselves from the sharp lighting. I know it’s unusual to discuss production values so soon in a review, but it’s important because the unbearable sound and some of the lighting actually detracted from the full enjoyment of this production. Now to the play - or is it a musical review or is it a concert or is it a evening of sketches backed up with some really fabulous singing and dancing? the show made its debut in a small bar in East Hollywood in 2010. It is safe to assume that the intent was to pay homage to Martin Scorsese, one of the film industry’s most talented auteurs, who has graced the big screen with his incisive story telling for over four decades. His body of work is legion and includes such seminal films as “Casino,” “The Departed,” “Goodfellas,” “Mean Streets,” “Taxi Driver,” “Aviator,” “Gangs of New York,” “Cape Fear,” “Raging Bull,” and “The Wolf of Wall Street.” It is from that body of work from which the nonconnected scenes sprouted, with recognizable dialogue usually followed by a song from the film’s soundtrack, a Scorsese directorial signature. One of the opening scenes is from “Goodfellas,” and takes place in a seedy bar in New York. With Tony Bennett’s “Rags to Riches” playing, Mafia “wise guys” are sitting around a table shooting the breeze, with colorful xx-rated language punctuating their sentences. Here we meet Frankie played by Jason Paige, who does a great imitation of Joe Pesci’s character of Danny DeVito in that famous scene in “Goodfellas” between Danny and Henry Hill, played by Ray Liotta. In this re-enactment, Frankie tells a funny story and when Hill laughs, he badgers him demanding to know why he thinks he’s funny. The character of Henry is nicely played and sung by Zac Resnick. Paige has Frankie’s hair trigger temper down pat and is in multiple musical and non-musical scenes throughout the evening. We see that explosive nature at work in the bar scene where a guy is teasing him about shining shoes when he was a kid. We watch Frankie’s temper rising to a boiling point and well, the teasing comes to an ultra violent ending. Another scene from “Goodfellas,” is the one between Henry and his wife Karen, played in the film by Lorraine Bracco. In this version, Pia Toscano plays Karen and two scenes are recreated: one where she
confronts him at gunpoint about whether or not he’s cheating on her, and the other is when she flushes cocaine down the toilet. In an excerpt from “Casino,” where Robert De Niro played Sam “Ace” Rothstein and Sharon Stone played his wife Ginger, Tony award winner John Lloyd Young and Tony nominee Carmen Cusack do the scene where she asks Sam for $25,000 to give to her old boyfriend Lester Diamond, who in the film was played by James Wood. However, the actor playing Lester is not credited in the program. Another memorable scene from the same film is between Sam and Frankie: Sam: “Are you fucking my wife?” Frankie: How can you “akst” (ask) me that?” Sam: “Just tell me!” Frankie: “I’m not gonna’ answer.” Although the director, Anderson Davis, was clear in the press notes that he was not going for a parody or a series of sketches, I’m afraid he did not accomplish his vision as that’s precisely what was presented on stage. On the plus side, the deafening sound and occasional blinding light not withstanding, he put together an incredibly gifted, award-winning ensemble – most of whom have strong Broadway backgrounds and possess “legit” voices. They performed both the acting and musical portions at the highest professional level but again, the painful decibels detracted from their performances. This would be a different show if that element were adjusted. Another outstanding member of the cast is James Byous, who as the bartender, has compelling scenes as Travis from “Taxi Driver.” Other members of this talented ensemble include, Dionne Gipson (Diane,) Lindsey Gort (Iris,) Olivia Harris (Teresa,) Doug Kreeger (Jake,) Justin Mortelliti (Jordan,) and Grammy Award winner B. Slade, who as Stacks, gives a show-stopping rendition of

The talented ensemble in “For the Record: Scorsese - American Crime Requiem.” Photo Credit: Kevin Parry “Hoochie Coochie Man,” from the “Casino” soundtrack. The ensemble numbers, beautifully choreographed by RJ Durell and Nick Florez were top notch. Costume designer Steve Mazurek dressed the actors in period clothing, from the expensive suits worn by the “wise guys,” to the glittering array of short, sexy costumes worn in the Las Vegas production numbers. The loud, electric seven-piece band was on the highest tier of the stage and for those audience members who wanted an up close and personal experience, they were seated at a few “night club” tables scattered around the set. Included in the Music Set list were some of the popular songs featured in Scorsese’s films such as: Gimme Shelter” (The Departed, Goodfellas & Casino,) “ Be My Baby” (Mean Streets,) “Takes Two to Tango” (Casino,) “Taxi Driver Theme” (Taxi Driver,)” Boom Boom Boom” (The Wolf of Wall Street,) “ Wives & Lovers” (Goodfellas,) “I’m Sorry” (Casino,) “Sweet Dreams” (The Departed,) “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” (Casino,) “Do Right Woman, Do Right
Man” (Cape Fear,) “My Way” (Goodfellas,) and “House of the Rising Sun” (Casino). As an added attraction, The Wallis has transformed the Promenade Terrace into a Little Italy street party where wine and appetizers were served following the performance. For any New Yorkers out there, it tried to replicate the famous Feast of San Gennaro held every year in Little Italy. If you don’t have a chance to have dinner before curtain, The Prince of Venice Food Truck is on site and serves up a variety of dishes including pasta and assorted beverages. The residence was once the home of Loretta Young, one of Hollywood’s most cherished movie stars. Her home, still graced with original black-and-white portraits set the stage for an evening of marvelous entertainment with Chris Bennett singing These Foolish Things Remind Me of You, among other vintage titles.
Dino followed with a stunning piano performance, which Jeffrey Gilson, founder of the Palm Springs orchestra, Kip Serafin ( Locations 760/The KIP Group), Joe Enos, of the Buzz Factory and Setorii Pond found mesmerizing. Desert Theatre League Honors The Best at Desert Star Awards Brianna Maloney, DTL Charles Harvey, Sidney Scholarship Award Winner Harmon Award
Chuck Yates, Michael Grossman Clark Dugger, Most Inspirational Bill Kuhlman Award
Cynthia Kaye, Lifetime Achievement Award
Tony Padilla, Joan Woodbury Mitchell Award
By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic The Desert Theatre League (DTL) honored the Best of the Best in the Coachella Valley from thirty theatre arts, dance companies, and High Schools at their 30th Annual Desert Star Awards ceremony and banquet held in Sun City’s Mountain View Banquet room in Palm Desert last Sunday. For the first time in its history, the popular DTL event was sold out. Loosely paraphrasing a line from the movie “Jaws”, the DTL is going to need a larger facility to hold the event next year. Attended by more than 300 Regional theatre professionals,
non-professional actors, directors, producers, playwrights, and technical wizards, along with young students, and theatre aficionados in general, DTL CoHosts and professional actor/ singers Darci Daniels and Paul Mackey did the announcing of more than 500 Nominees that produced 103 Winners with style and precision in the proper pronunciation of each nominee and winner’s names. To borrow a political word from this year’s election cycle their ‘stamina’ was a first class effort in itself. The desert theatre arts organization, in addition to the awarding of the Desert Stars Award Statuette, also honored five individuals for their above and beyond contributions to theatre arts
in the Coachella Valley. Receiving the coveted Desert Theatre League Lifetime Achievement Award was Cynthia Kaye, longtime DTL member and founder of C.K. Dance Company, and a very popular choice. The Michael Grossman Award given to a Valley actor in recognition of talent, dedication, and a devotion to the craft of theatre production was presented to three-time DTL winner Chuck Yates, co-founder and artistic director of Coyote StageWorks. Multi-award winning actor, director, and stage technician Charles Harvey, was honored with the Sydney Harmon Award for theatrical excellence both on and off the stage. Awardwinning Playwright Tony Padilla was honored with the Joan
Woodbury Mitchell Award, given to an individual who gets theatre done and inspires that effort in others. The Bill Kuhlman Award was presented to professional and awardwinning cinematographer, film director, and stage technical wizard Clark Duggar of Dezart Performs. The Kuhlman Award honors the efforts of the ‘unsung heroes’ of theatre production, those behind the footlights who toil in anonymity so others can shine on stage. In addition to the above Board of Directors Special Awards, the DTL also awards a Desert Theatre League Scholarship to a deserving young student of the arts. This year’s winner is seventeen yearold dancer, singer, and actress
Brianna Maloney, a student at Musical Theatre University, in Rancho Mirage, who is planning on an acting career. With more than 500 individual DTL nominations and the names of the 103 winners of the 2016 Desert Star Award, there isn’t enough space to list everyone, however, each artist and/or performer along with the production company name, deserves to be recognized. You can check out all of the nominees and winners by going to the Desert Theatre League Website at deserttheatreleague.org. And next year be sure you make your reservations early. It’s the theatre event of the Fall season to meet, mingle and schmooze. And it quickly sells out.
By KMIR News Staff INDIO, Ca. - The presence of Aedes agypti mosquitoes, which are capable of transmitting a number of deadly viruses, was confirmed in Indio Wednesday, making it the third Coachella Valley city to harbor the mosquitoes in the past year. The mosquitoes were found in four traps within the area bordered by East Circle Drive, Palo Verde Street, Emerald Avenue and Jackson Street, according to the Coachella Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District.
Technicians will conduct enhanced surveillance of the affected area, including setting more traps and searching for standing water sources, where mosquitoes are known to lay their eggs, said Jill Oviatt, the district’s public information manager. Aedes agypti mosquitoes, which are not native to California, are capable of transmitting Zika virus, dengue, chikungunya, and yellow fever, according to Oviatt. This year, samples of the mosquito were also found
in Coachella and Cathedral City, but district officials said the infestation has been largely halted by the district’s containment efforts, which include spraying applications via truck and helicopter, along with door-to-door inspections of homes that might harbor breeding sites. The mosquito breed was first seen in the region in May, when positive samples were located in Coachella, and then again six months later in Cathedral City. ``It seems just when we
get control of this mosquito in one area, it’s discovered in another,’’ Oviatt said. ``We are doing everything we can to eliminate this mosquito from the Valley, but we can’t do it alone. Public commitment to removing standing water sources and unnecessary containers is critical to success.’’ The public is urged to inspect yards for standing water sources and to drain water that may have collected beneath potted plants, in bird baths or anywhere else water might collect. Laid eggs can remain
viable in dry areas for months, according to CVMVCD. Residents who are bitten by mosquitoes should report the bites to the district. Those just returning from travel in areas where dengue, chikungunya, or Zika occurs, should contact their doctor should they experience fever, headache, joint or muscle pain. Those who are experiencing those symptoms were warned to stay indoors to avoid mosquito bites, which could further transmission of the disease. Source KMIR
By Vince Marino COACHELLA VALLEYPrescription drug prices have steadily increased in recent years. The price of an Epipen shot up almost 600 percent over a five-year period. Prop 61 supporters say the measure will put an end to prescription drug increases. But opponents say to take a closer look. For some people, filling a prescription can hurt. Especially if you’re on a fixed income. “I do a lot of work with widows who are seniors and after their husbands passed on, they found themselves not having the money they thought they would have, just to live ... I have a friend who I just spoke with tonight to get some specifics. She has
a policy similar to mine. She is a widow on a limited income and she had a very serious operation where they took out 12 inches of her intestine. It was very, very painful,” said senior advocate Sonja Martin. The insurance company of that woman would only pay for four pain pills a day. She needs seven. In August 2015, Turing Pharmaceuticals and their former CEO Martin Shkreli raised the price of a drug called Daraprim from $13.50 per pill to $750.00 per pill. Those in favor of Prop 61 believe a yes vote would put an end to what they say is pharmaceutical price gouging. “This is, I think, illustrates
the greed that we see in the drug companies, that they just know that they can continue to raise the rates with no stopping them because they can, because they have people basically with their hands behind their back,” said Pilar Schiavo of the California Nurses Association. Those opposed to prop 61 say the measure is deeply flawed and would only affect about 12 percent of Californians. “We all recognize that there is a concern about prescription drug pricing, but proposition 61 simply will not work. In fact, the experts that have looked at it have said it will actually increase state prescription drug costs for millions of Californians, it’s going to reduce patient access to their
needed medicines and it’s going to hurt our nations veterans by taking away a special discount they receive. So we believe 61 is flat out a bad measure,” said Brandon Castillo of the No on Prop 61 campaign. In 2014 and 2015 the state of California paid about $3.8 billion dollars in drug costs. Most of it going to MediCal, public employees, U.C. students and prison inmates. “Independent experts like the state’s independent legislative analyst, who is charged with evaluating ballot measures, they looked at it and they raised serious concerns that it was unworkable, that you couldn’t even figure out how to implement this measure,” Castillo said.
Critics of prop 61 also say a yes vote would negatively impact veterans. “The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs have analyzed Prop 61 and they warned that it would increase their costs by as much as 3.8 billion dollars every year. And that’s going to translate into either reduced services or increased costs for veterans,” said Castillo. “There’s federal laws that protect the veterans from any kinds of increases like this. The prices that vets get is not out of the goodness of Pharma’s heart. It’s because it’s negotiated with the V.A. and there are federal laws that protect against any increases,” said Schiavo.
