“Sweetheart Murder?” Gabby Petito’s cause of death was revealed to be strangulation, a month into media frenz y around the blogger’s tragic fate By Desert Star Staff The young “van life” blogger Gabby Petito died of strangulation, a Wyoming coroner revealed on Tuesday. But, as the search for Petito’s fiance, Brian Laundrie, goes on amid constant media
coverage, he remains a “person of interest.” Petito’s remains were found on September 19 at the Spread Creek Dispersed Camping Area in Bridger-Teton National Forest. Teton County coroner Dr. Brent Blue finally
revealed the official cause of her death this week. He refused to go into further detail about the specifics of the death but did say they had determined Petito’s body had been left in the wilderness for three to four weeks. Blue
had previously determined the end was a homicide. The coroner could not reveal whether the strangulation was manual or done with an object, nor did he tell toxicology results, as the investigation is still open.

Documents made public in Epic’s court case against Apple (which both sides are appealing) revealed the extent to which Epic’s revenue is dependent on “Fortnite.” • “Fortnite” accounted for 97% of Epic’s $5.6 billion in 2018 revenue. • The game brought in 88% of Epic’s $4.2 billion in revenue the following year. • The company’s revenue was $3.85 billion for 2020, with $1.54
billion in profit. Previous projections found that “Fortnite” would be 77% of the company’s earnings. The company’s game store is of growing importance to Epic, bringing in a projected 11% of its revenue in 2020. Five Tips for Picking the Right Medicare Plan
By Desert Star Staff The pandemic has made it clearer than ever -- maintaining good health is critical, and it all starts with having a health plan that works for you every day, and especially in times of greater need. If you qualify for Medicare, the Medicare Annual Election Period (AEP), which runs from October 15 through December 7, is an opportunity to ensure you have needed coverage. “Now is the time to understand and evaluate your benefits and anticipate the care you may need in 2022,” says Gary Culp, chief growth officer for Medicare at Cigna. Medicare Advantage for the first time or making changes, you can do so during AEP. In both cases, the new benefits will kick in on January 1, 2022. However, if you like your current plan and want to stick with it, you can do so. To evaluate your current plan, Culp recommends writing down what you like about it, including which aspects are essential to you. Based on your needs, review other plans to see how they stack up. The process of choosing a health plan can be overwhelming. However, you can eliminate some of the confusion by seeking advice from your doctor or family and friends. By attending inperson or virtual seminars or calling independent health plan agents, you can have your questions addressed by experts. You can also visit your state health insurance assistance program for additional information. In the meantime, keep these tips in mind as you review plans: • Estimate total costs: Make sure you know the current premium or monthly cost of your plan. Second, check your Annual Notice of Change (ANOC). This is a letter mailed in late September that details changes to out-of-pocket costs, including co-pays and
deductibles on doctor and hospital visits and prescription drugs. Finally, check to see the costs associated with visiting a specialist. • Ensure providers are innetwork: One common reason to change your coverage is if your favorite doctors are no longer in-network. Confirm that your current providers and any specialists you expect to visit in 2022 are still in your plan and that any new doctors you’ll be visiting accept new patients. If not, you might have to change plans or switch doctors to avoid paying more out of pocket. • Review your prescriptions: Review
the drug pricing tiers to determine whether your prescription plan will cover your current medications and the costs. Keep in mind, some drug plans require prior authorization for certain brand-name drugs. • Consider extras: Take a close look at extra benefits, such as dental, vision, health care-related transportation and virtual care visits, that go beyond what’s provided by original Medicare and may be built into a private insurer’s Medicare Advantage plan. Some plans may even include additional health and wellness benefits that help you stay healthier, like fitness programs.

was later reported missing by her family, and Laundrie disappeared soon after this and could not be located. Laundrie has not been seen since September 13. His family claim he went hiking and never returned, but he remains at large. Police have referred to him as a “person of interest,” An arrest warrant was issued after he used one of Petito’s debit cards. Petito and Laundrie had a documented run-in with police in Utah before her disappearance. A witness had called in a physical altercation between the two, but neither wanted to press charges, and they were told to separate for the night, police body camera footage revealed. With the couple already being in the public eye as new “van life” bloggers, the bizarre details of the case have led to massive media attention and pundits weighing in on the case. For example, former reality television star and bounty hunter Duane Lee Chapman claimed he had been searching for Laundrie for some time. The coverage soon attracted some pretty
controversial comments, too. Some activists claimed the attention the case received was a consequence of the media and public caring disproportionately more about a young, blonde woman. MSNBC’s Joe Reid stirred up controversy last month when she said interest in Petito’s case was due to “missing white woman syndrome.” “It was quite the media circus, and it continues to

$4.3 billion in its fiscal third quarter, but the segment still took a $300 million loss. • Disney is folding its Hotstar network into ESPN+ and Hulu in the U.S. (while keeping it separate in India). • ESPN is seeking to license its name to a sportsbook in a multiyear deal worth at least $3 billion. Disney CEO Bob Chapek has floated the possibility of one day combining its three main streaming networks — Disney+, ESPN+, and Hulu — into a single offering. The services are already available
together in a $13.99-permonth “Disney Bundle,” which Chapek said has “worked really, really well.” How Disney proceeds may depend on how quickly people abandon cable for streaming services. The NFL, weighing those same factors, included opt-out clauses in its 10-year, $113 billion media deals struck earlier this year. It can end its deals with CBS, NBC, and Fox after seven years, and with ESPN after eight years.

CA Postal Workers Say Latest Changes Undermine USPS
By Emily Scott/PNS UPLAND, Calif. -- Ahead of the busiest season for the U.S. Postal Service, some California postal workers are voicing concerns about the latest policy changes. They include new service standards that slow down the first-class mail delivery. Mail traveling less than 1,000 miles should reach its destination in three days, and mail traveling more than 1,900 miles will take about five days. The Postal Service has also hiked rates for mail, packages and other special services. Rick Ruiz, executive vice president of the American Postal Workers Union California Local 4635, which has more than 1,700 members in Southern California, said he is worried people will turn to other delivery providers, especially for mail with a deadline. “Let’s say you have a
credit card that you got to pay, and you got to send it to Pennsylvania, or you got to send it to Delaware, and it’s got to be there in five days,” Ruiz outlined. “People aren’t going to trust the Post Office with the relaxed standards. People are going to find, you know, alternative ways of getting their bill paid because time is money.” The changes are part of Postmaster General Louis DeJoy’s 10-year plan, called Delivering for America, which includes modernizing the vehicle fleet and making investments in mail-processing facilities. In addition, DeJoy has said the agency is hiring 40,000 seasonal workers to help with the holiday rush. Christopher Shaw, an author and historian of the U.S. Postal Service, said adding short-term staff is only a temporary
solution to the problem. “They’ve been basically drawing down the labor force now for over a decade, pretty aggressively,” Shaw explained. “So there’s this underlying problem with not having sufficient numbers
of career employees who have that background and that knowledge and that experience with how the postal system works.” DeJoy said the changes are needed to trim a $160 billion loss for the Postal Service by
2030. The plan also includes cuts to post office hours. Disclosure: American Postal Workers Union contributes to our fund for reporting on Consumer Issues and Livable Wages/ Working Families.
Bow and arrow attack kills 5, injures two people in Norway
By Desert Star Staff A man shooting arrows from a bow has been arrested after killing five and injuring two people in Norway. Multiple areas have been evacuated, and police say it is too early to tell whether the attack was terrorism-related. Norwegian public broadcaster NRK reported that five people were killed and two injured, a plainclothes police officer. The lone attacker was taken
into custody, but his identity has not been revealed. There is no suspicion that anyone else was involved. A large area close to Kongsburg and Nybura has reportedly been evacuated and cordoned off after the attacker allegedly shot multiple people in an open street with his bow and arrow. However, investigators are not ruling out this being a terrorist attack, according to Drammen Police Chief Oyvind Aas,
who held a press conference following Wednesday’s incident and confirmed the arrest of the sole suspect. “Time will tell,” he told reporters when asked about a potential terrorist connection. The man used a bow and arrow ... for some of the attacks,” Aas told reporters, adding that the police were investigating whether other weapons had also been used. Forensic investigators are now working in the
area to track the assailant’s previous movements. According to regional paper Laagendalsposten, the Norwegian Elite Police Unit (Delta) and military forces have also been deployed in the vicinity in the wake of the attack. Oslo police have sent forces to the region to assist in the ongoing investigation, including bomb squads. “We are helping with national assistance resources
such as police helicopters, bomb squads, and crews from the Emergency Response Troop,” Oslo police spokesperson Unni Grondal said in a statement. The incident took place over a large area in Kongsberg, a mining town southwest of Oslo with a population of over 26,000 people. Local media reported the attack began with the suspect began shooting into a supermarket.
Health Advocates Press for Passage of Build Back Better Act
By Suzanne Potter/PNS SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Congress still is debating the Build Back Better reconciliation bill, and groups that fight for better health care are pressing for passage. Notably, the bill would authorize the Department of Health and Human Services, which administers Medicare, to negotiate lower prices for prescription drugs and extend those prices to private insurers so that everyone could benefit. Yvette Brisco, a Central Valley health advocate and multiple sclerosis patients, said the change could
save California consumers $6.4 billion per year. “Prescription drug prices should not be the thing that makes you choose between whether or not you eat and whether or not you get help,” Brisco asserted. The bill could also expand Medicare to cover dental and vision care for millions of older Americans. Rep. Jim Costa, D-Calif., from Fresno, said the current system leads to much suffering. “The high prices force people to ration or stop taking their medications,” Costa observed. “[It] results in serious,
serious health implications.” The American Rescue Plan provides $1.4 billion a year to help people pay for the Covered California marketplace plans. The Build Back Better bill could extend those subsidies. Mark Herbert with the California Small Business
Majority noted half of the people on the Covered California marketplace work for small businesses or are self-employed. “Extending those subsidies to allow business owners to access affordable insurance still is critical,” Herbert contended.
The nonprofit Health Access estimates without significant funding in the Build Back Better bill, more than 1.4 million people on Covered California plans could see their premiums rise by up to $1,000 a year.

Protecting Yourself Against the Flu Helps Fight COVID-19 Too
By Desert Star Staff With students across the country returning to the classroom and adults returning to the workplace and gathering in person, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) predicts that the second flu season of the COVID-19 pandemic will be significantly more active than last year. But, the good news is that there are three simple steps everyone can take to help protect themselves, their loved ones and communities: 1. Get the Flu Shot: Make sure to get the flu shot, and get it as early as possible. Most health care providers advise getting your flu vaccine in early fall. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), early results show that only about half (50% – 55%) of U.S. adults received the flu vaccine last year. And, the rate of vaccination among children dropped from 62% in 20192020 to 58% in 2020-2021, which could be attributed to remote learning and greater isolation than in previous years.
Everyone in the household should get the flu vaccine— especially working adults, seniors and children in school or daycare. With COVID-19 variants making people sicker than previously seen, getting the vaccine and protecting yourself from the flu can keep your immune system healthy. Some studies have even found that individuals who contracted COVID-19 but received the flu shot were less likely to require treatment from an emergency department or intensive care unit. Also, if you fall within the CDC’s recommendations for COVID-19 boosters, you should consider getting both at the same time as a convenient way to protect yourself and others from flu and COVID this season. The benefits of increased immunization provided by both the flu and COVID-19 vaccinations can also help ease the burden on an already overloaded health care system. Around the country, there have been heartbreaking reports of full intensive care units having to turn away sick patients. Protecting yourself against the
flu is one way you can help to relieve health care providers and frontline workers. 2. Practice Healthy Hygiene: Continue to practice healthy hygiene habits like washing your hands regularly and wearing a mask when appropriate. This means wearing a mask while shopping indoors, or attending an indoor event with a crowd of people. 3. Stay Home When
Sick: Stay home and avoid contact with others if you aren’t feeling well. Many of the symptoms of COVID-19 and flu look alike—including fever, cough, muscle aches and sore throat—and knowing the difference can only be done through testing. Get tested if you develop any of these symptoms to rule out COVID-19, since its symptoms can often become more serious.
“The best thing you can do to help yourself, your family, and your community is to get both the flu shot and COVID-19 vaccine, as well as a COVID-19 booster if you are eligible and to practice healthy hygiene habits,” says Dr. Steve Miller, chief clinical officer, Cigna Corp. “The only way out of the pandemic is by working together and taking steps to protect ourselves and each other.” StatePoint
Why Women’s Feet Hurt More in Autumn and What You Can Do About It By Desert Star Staff As the weather cools and women switch from open to closed shoe styles, the transition can be painful. According to Dr. Thanh Dinh, DPM, FACFAS, a foot and ankle surgeon and president of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS) two of the most common types of pain women feel in their feet in autumn come from bunions and hammertoes. The ACFAS offers the following insights into treating these conditions and easing associated pain: Understanding Bunions: A common myth is that tight-fitting or narrow shoes cause bunions. The truth is, bunions are genetic. However, symptoms occur most often when wearing high heels or other styles that crowd the toes. “A bunion is a change in the bony framework of
the front part of the foot and is most often caused by an inherited faulty mechanical structure of the foot,” Dr. Dinh explains. “When the big toe leans towards the second toe, rather than pointing straight ahead, it throws the bones out of alignment and produces the all-too-familiar, bunion bump.” Pain from bunions most often occurs along the side of the foot near the big toe. Women sometimes describe it as a throbbing that continues even after taking off their shoes and putting up their feet. The site of the bunion can also be inflamed or red and can feel numb or have a burning sensation. Demystifying Hammertoes: “A hammertoe is a ‘bending’ or contracture deformity of one or both joints of a toe,” Dr. Dinh says. “The abnormal bending puts pressure on the toe when wearing shoes and causes problems to develop

-- which can start mildly and worsen over time.” Women with hammertoes can experience pain or irritation of the affected toe when wearing shoes. Corns and calluses (a buildup of skin) on the toe, between the toes or on the ball of the foot can occur from the constant friction against the shoes with hammertoes. Inflammation, redness or a burning sensation are also possible and in severe cases, open sores may form. Next Steps: Proper shoe selection and conservative treatments can go a long way in managing pain from bunions and hammertoes. Foot and ankle surgeons recommend avoiding high-heeled shoes
and styles that crowd the toes together, as well as using padding and taking antiinflammatory medication. While these techniques address pain, they don’t generally stop bunions or hammertoes from getting worse. Surgery is commonly performed by foot and ankle surgeons to both correct the deformities and alleviate pain. Those who suffer from both ailments can have surgery to correct the foot deformities at the same time. “Recovery time varies based on the procedures performed, the advancement of the deformities, the number of toes involved, age and other factors, but the success rates for the

surgeries are encouraging,” says Dr. Dinh. “Plus, the advanced procedures foot and ankle surgeons perform today to fix bunion deformities reduce the likelihood of a recurrence,” she adds. Most Americans Ill-Prepared for Natural Disasters
By Desert Star Staff A time when natural disasters are growing in frequency, most Americans are not physically or financially prepared to handle them. According to a new Wells Fargo & Company survey, 84% of Americans live in areas that have experienced some form of natural disaster in the past three years, and 54% live in areas that have experienced severe natural disasters, specifically hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, wildfires or earthquakes. Despite these sobering statistics, 71% admit they don’t have a detailed emergency plan and 16% haven’t thought about emergency planning at all. Even those with some kind of plan seem anxious that it’s inadequate. Indeed, 40% of those surveyed described their planning style as “Barely Covered.” According to Rullah Price, head of Public Affairs Resiliency & Enterprise Incident Communications at Wells Fargo, these survey insights can help you tighten your emergency plan: Plans Often Incomplete: The 29% of Americans who do have an emergency plan prioritize having food and water
supplies (78%), emergency cash (63%), access to important documents (61%) and a planned transportation/ evacuation route (59%). Items of slightly lower priority include a plan for medical needs (54%), a family communication plan (52%), a shelter plan (49%) or plan for pets (44%). “Most people’s plans are lacking detail. For example, only a quarter of respondents have outlined specific plans for members in the household of different ages. This is incredibly important for vulnerable ones like children and seniors,” says Price. Price points out that less than a third of respondents have a go-bag packed in case of natural disaster and many of those with cars don’t keep their gas tanks filled halfway for emergency evacuation. Ensure your plan includes these details. You should also have an emergency kit containing supplies for several days. Most Not Financially Prepared: In addition to lacking a physical plan, most Americans are not financially prepared for disaster. Only 44% have started an emergency savings account and 39% say they have no
emergency cash in the house. “We’re evolving into a cashless society— but during an emergency, you may not have access to an ATM, and credit cards may not work if electricity is out. Be prepared for all possible events,” says Price.” The study also found that only 43% of Americans have a consolidated file of important records and receipts safely stored digitally and in a waterproof, fireproof container. And only 55% have recently reviewed their insurance policies to ensure
they have the right types and amounts of coverage. “Contact a qualified financial counselor who can help organize your finances for an emergency,” says Price. “Less than a quarter of respondents have done this.” Communication is Key: Although most Americans are likely to be directly affected by natural disasters at some point in their lifetime, only 32% have had a conversation with family members about how they would locate each other if they were separated during such an event.
The survey revealed that only 37% of parents have discussed the possibility of disasters with their school-age children, only 36% of parents have made plans for schoolage children in case they can’t get home, and just 13% have discussed disaster plans with their neighbors or community. “Because a natural disaster can occur anywhere, any time, it’s crucial to have a detailed emergency plan and communicate with your family how you will protect one another,” says Price.
