Once-in- a-lifetime concert, the eights wonder of the World; rocking with six of the world’s most iconic and influential rock and roll artists. Story by Pat Krause The first night of Desert Trip on Oct. 14 brought out its first Noble Prize winner to the stage. I think this is probably the first concert by BOB DYLAN as a Nobel Prize winner for Literature. It was announced just days before his performance on the second weekend of Desert Trip. He is the first songwriter

to receive this accolade. I am not familiar with most of BOB Dylan’s songs. His gravely low voice was more about speaking his lyrics than signing them. He stood beside the piano playing during a lot of his songs. He took the mic and just stood there singing his songs, but I didn’t see him sit down once and was told he played the same

By Desert Star Staff If ‘killer clowns’ aren’t enough to scare you this Halloween, Airbnb is hosting a competition to spend a night in Bran Castle, the Transylvanian setting which inspired ‘Dracula’. The lucky winners will be welcomed to the Romanian castle by Dacre Stoker, the great grand-nephew of the novel’s author Bram Stoker, who promises to utter the Count’s famous words “Welcome to my house! Enter freely. Go safely, and leave something of the happiness you bring!” They will then share a meal with Dacre, which will include a

dish of chicken paprikash as described in the novel. Once home to Vlad the Impaler the castle is famous for the stories of torture by the man believed to be the real-life inspiration for Dracula. Echoes of dismembering and roasting children alive will hopefully not affect the sweet dreams of the winners, as they lay down for the night in a velvet-trimmed coffin. Dacre said the competition is to raise awareness of his great grand-uncle, whom he says has been overshadowed by his book. “The vampire has been a huge part of

I heard that there were more attendees on the second weekend of Desert Trip and was closer to

85,000 people each night. The Rolling Stones got the crowd in more of a rock and roll feeling as the music was more upbeat tempo and of course louder. The acoustics are amazing as you can hear each band and singer from anywhere on the grounds fans watched the HUGE TV screen that looked like it spanned a football field long. Fans at the

Inspector, the manager could act as the official Inspector. However, HOA volunteers or professional inspector firms are a better choice – allow the manager to assist the Inspector. While management firms often provide personnel to run annual meetings, it is better for the HOA to have the president chair the meeting, closely supported by the management personnel. As to spending authority, some managers have wide discretion to commit the HOA to expenditures, while others are handcuffed with minimal or no spending authority. Sometimes the management contract limits the manager’s spending permission. The board’s fiduciary responsibility to the corporation would require the board not to allow managers an unlimited spending authority, but banning the manager from any spending is just as unreasonable. For example, if a window is broken in the community building, does the board wish to convene a board meeting to vote on the repair? A reasonable spending limit protects the board from meetings on minor items, and allows the manager to be more effective in their role. The amount of the spending limit depends upon the association’s needs. Associations more often establish manager spending limits which are too low rather than too high. Boards should consider

the association’s needs and determine what expenses are minor and, along with emergencies, therefore appropriate to include in the manager’s authority. Require the manager to disclose all such authorized expenditures in writing in the Manager’s Report at each open board meeting, and attach that Report to the minutes. However, there is a difference between spending authority and disbursement authority. The safest financial practice is not to allow HOA managers to sign checks (disbursements), and that HOA directors should not prepare checks. The manager should prepare checks for two directors to sign, and the check request should be accompanied by documentation of the expense. For example, the manager may be authorized to call the plumber for a $500 repair, but the board signs the check. Thanks for your questions, Kelly

What Can Managers Spend, and Should They Run Elections? By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq.

Hi Kelly, Thanks for your weekly articles. I have 2 questions. Should the Board conduct the election meeting, allowing the manager to assist, advise and count ballots or conduct the entire meeting? In the past, some management representatives opened and controlled the meeting, overseeing opening and counting ballots. I believe the Board should have the election as an agenda item and as such seek their advice, leadership and management of the voting. For what association financial matters should the manager be allowed to obligate money without board approval? I concur they should be allowed to authorize

emergency repairs. I believe the Board, as representatives of the members, issuing nonemergency repair contracts is Board responsibility to approve first. Possibly the Board could set certain dollar limits? Any input you can provide would be appreciated. Sincerely, A.D., Santee Dear A.D.: Generally speaking, the management can be very helpful in facilitating elections. Of course, just as the Inspector of Elections, the management must be absolutely neutral as to who should serve on the board. The membership roster is usually maintained by the manager, and often the manager’s experience in checking in members and ballots is extremely helpful to the Inspectors of Elections. If an association’s election rules allow the HOA to have a current vendor also act as

The Window By Desert Star Staff BEVERLY HILLS, -- The 12th Annual LA Femme International Film Festival, that kicks off on October 20th in Beverly Hills, will have a healthy competition of films dealing with people in the Third Act, defying the odds and traditional expectations of the ever-growing population of senior citizens. Briana Gallo’s “The Bee Keeper” tells the story of Ed “Doc” Ziegler, a retired dentist living in a small town in New England. 35 years ago, he discovered apitherapy - the power of bees to heal - both physically and mentally. He now devotes his life to beekeeping and shares the curative powers of bee venom with his community. His neighbors and friends recount their own recovery

stories and loving thoughts about this kind and humble man who, at the age of 97, is still tending to the needs of his ‘patients.’ (Oct. 21, 10:00 am) “The Window”, written and directed by Jill PauletichRagan, is a valentine to the power of love that can be discovered no matter how old you are. The film has had a successful festival run and competed in several prestigious film festivals including the Carmel International Film Festival, the Edmonton International Film Festival, Hollywood’s Dances

For the past 70 years, she has continued flying, teaching and inspiring young minds to be prepared for whatever life brings to them. At age 95 years young, Iris still swims daily, maintains a current pilot’s license and instructor rating, and has given many historical presentations about her adventures in

Spirit of Iris aviation. (Oct, 20, 10:00 am) Says Jayaweera, “Iris truly embodies the phrase, ‘life favors the prepared mind’. After hearing of her marvelous adventures and stories throughout the years, I felt her story needed to be shared. It is a story of inspiration and preparation for life, yet, many people have never heard of her and that had to change!” If you didn’t get your fill of old rockers at this past weekend’s Desert Trip aka “Old-Chella” Cheryl Robson’s “Rock ‘n’ Roll Island”, a colorful musical doc about England’s iconic blues and rock venue, The Eel Pie Island Hotel.

Consumer Groups Praise New Rules on Prepaid Debit Cards

By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Consumer groups are praising the new rules on prepaid credit cards just released by the federal Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. The regulation goes into effect next fall and will make prepaid card issuers follow many of the same rules that apply to credit cards.

Graciela Aponte-Diaz, a policy director for the Center for Responsible Lending, says low-income families, who may not have a bank account, often use prepaid cards. But the cards can come with hidden fees, something that will change with the new “know as you go” provision. “It ensures that the prepaid card issuer lets the

consumer know what the exact fees are, if there’s a monthly fee, if there is a fee when you go to the ATM,” she explains. “Is there a fee when you reload the card with cash?” The new rules would force card issuers to underwrite a consumer’s ability to repay a loan on his or her prepaid card and would impose

October 19, 2016

limits on companies’ rules for repayment, in an effort to make the process more fair. But Aponte-Diaz maintains the rule doesn’t go quite far enough, and says she would have liked to see the rule ban overdraft fees entirely if people spend more than the face value of the card. “As the rule is written now, someone can use

their card and overspend and they’ll be charged fees for that,” she explains. The rules also say that when errors are found, the card issuer will be required to open an investigation and give consumers a replacement card, instead of freezing their funds.

By Desert Star Staff HOUSTON – A coalition of environmental groups and Native American activists has taken protests over a controversial pipeline to the Houston offices of the company building the project. Dressed in traditional tribal garb, chanting and dancing to native drums, dozens gathered this week at the headquarters of Energy Transfer Partners, the contractor building the Dakota Access Pipeline, to support the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe’s efforts to halt construction on the project. Donna House, an organizer with the Navajo Chapter of the Black Mesa Water Coalition, said they gathered in Houston because it is the headquarters of the oil industry. “Houston has had companies that have had

incredibly destructive impact on Indian lands and in Native American natural resources, our sacred sites, our water,” she said. Protests in North Dakota, some of which have turned violent, have been aimed at blocking the 1,200-mile oil pipeline, which would cross native lands. In response to the Houston protest, Energy Transfer Partners issued a statement saying they are taking all necessary steps to protect cultural resources, the environment, and public safety. In addition to Dakota Access, the groups in Houston were protesting another of the company’s projects, the Trans-Pecos Pipeline in West Texas. House says that project runs through ancestral tribal lands and would endanger environmentally sensitive areas.

four local churches that allege the state’s Transgender AntiDiscrimination Law forces them to violate their core beliefs. The law took effect on Oct. 1 and allows, among other things, people to use the bathrooms or locker rooms that correspond with their gender identities. Reverend Courtney Jones, associate pastor at Hope Central Church in Jamaica Plain, defended the new law, saying it is in keeping with her beliefs and those of her congregation. “We believe that all people are made in God’s image,” she said. “This is important because it cannot deny any person equal treatment, fair treatment under the law; it’s a moral issue, it’s a spiritual issue.” The churches on the opposing side are asking for a temporary injunction to

block the law as it applies to churches while the case is pending, and the state Attorney General is reviewing the challenge. The Horizon Christian Fellowship Church in Fitchburg is among those that joined the lawsuit. The church referred all calls to the Alliance Defending Freedom, based in Scottsdale, Arizona, which filed the case. ADF attorney Christiana Holcomb said the suit aims to prevent the state from forcing churches to violate their core beliefs. “My client believes that the Bible teaches God created each person as either immutably male or immutably female; and so for the government to come in and say you are no longer allowed to have sexspecific sensitive areas, that violates the core beliefs of

my clients,” she explained. The Transgender AntiDiscrimination Law also is under threat by a ballot initiative to be decided in 2018 which calls for repealing the law. Jones said she’s a little surprised at all these challenges, because the Bay State usually puts a high value on freedom. “But more than surprising me or not surprising me, it just makes me incredibly sad, because it is such an incredible next step for everyone having freedom in our state,” Jones added. In defense of the measure, a spokesperson for the attorney general said, “This law is about civil rights and is critical for people who were without full protection and equality under the law for too long.”

Good News: Feds say Miners Exposed to Less Coal Dust By Desert Star Staff CHARLESTON, W.Va. Some good news about coal, miners are now being exposed to less coal dust than ever. Mine safety officials hope this turns a corner toward fewer cases of black lung. The Federal Mine Safety and Health Administration reports air samples from the mines show historic low levels of coal dust, fully thirty percent below the previous record. The Assistant Secretary of Labor for Mine Safety and Health, Joe Main, credits tougher rules for allowable dust, more and better sampling and more enforcement of ventilation rules. “There’s no reason any miner should ever get the black lung disease,” he said. “And the fact that we’ve been able to, on average, get the dust levels down to less than a milligram tells us that it is achievable to clean up

this air. It is preventable.” Mine operators had criticized the tougher standards as unworkable. But Main said more than 99 percent of 150,000 samples from this fiscal year met the new, higher standards, in part, with the industry’s cooperation. Main said black lung has killed 76,000 American coal miners, by gradually making it impossible for them to breathe. He said an unexpected rise in the number of cases moved the thennew Obama Administration’s Department of Labor to first toughen enforcement and do more outreach. Then in 2014, MSHA made stricter rules allowing less breathable dust in the air samples. Main said in effect, they better used the rules in place, and then, tightened those rules. “These cleaner, more efficient dust-control plans and ventilation plans being not only

Federal figures show miners are being exposed to record low levels of coal dust. (MSHA) put in place, but more toughly enforced, paved the way for this new rule to produce the results it is, with the high compliance rates,” he explained. MSHA is also reporting fewer accidental deaths in the mines this year. Main

said they haven’t confirmed the number of man-hours worked, which could make the low number of deaths less impressive. But his gut feeling is, the mines are getting safer. “In 2014, we had 30 mining deaths,” he added. “From

August of last year through February, we held it to three. And we’ve proven that zero fatalities is really achievable in the mining industry.” Main added the amount of silica dust in the air samples is averaging half what it was.

By Desert Star Staff COLUMBIA, N.C. – Deer hunting, a sporting tradition enjoyed by thousands of people in North Carolina, is underway in most parts of the state, but conservation groups are concerned that one endangered animal is getting caught in the crossfire. Red wolves, who live in the eastern parts of the Tar Heel State, are often mistaken for coyotes, an animal commonly shot by hunters during deer season because of its invasive nature. Heather Clarkson, southeast program outreach representative for Defenders of Wildlife, explained the problem. “We’re concerned that some of these anti-wolf folks

over in the recovery area will maliciously go out and shoot the red wolf, knowing that all they have to do is say they thought it was a coyote,” she said. “There should be more enforcement on the shooting of the red wolf.” The future of red wolves is currently in question in North Carolina ,with the federal government’s attempt to remove the animal from private properties in the state to federal lands. That plan has been temporarily halted by a U.S. District Judge. Once close to extinction, the red wolf was successfully reintroduced to North Carolina in 1987. According to a recent poll by Tulchin Research, the majority of North Carolinians support red

wolf recovery in the state. Clarkson said hunters should not shoot at an animal unless they’re sure of its species. In addition, the prevailing logic of hunters that killing coyotes will rid the state of the nuisance runs counter to the reality. “The studies show that shooting a coyote is not really helping the situation at all,” she added. “Killing a coyote does nothing to make them go away. In fact, when you shoot coyotes, you encourage the ones who you haven’t shot to breed more and produce larger litters.” There are fewer than 45 red wolves left in the wild in North America.

Report Calls Mass Incarceration a $3.4 Trillion Mistake

By Desert Star Staff NEW YORK – Thirty years of mass incarceration and criminalization wasted trillions of dollars that could have been used to improve lives, according to a new report. The report, The $3.4 Trillion Dollar Mistake, said from 1982 to 2012, spending on criminal justice nationally increased by almost 230 percent. According to Adilka Pimentel, a youth organizer with Make the Road New York, more than $230 billion was spent in New York alone on failed “get tough on crime” measures and the “war on drugs,” money that could have been used to improve education, access to health care and creating jobs. “We’re looking at a lot

6

of different ways that could have been a more successful path in the last 30 years and even for the years later to come, because everything affects people now, but it also affects our future,” she said. That money, she said, could have closed the $3.9 billion gap in public school funding, financed a Dream Act for immigrant students, expanded access to health care, and eliminated tuition at all city and state universities. Another impact has been a huge increase in the number of people in the criminal justice system. And as Darian X, also with Make the Road, pointed out, New York City’s jail on Rikers Island shows that people of color are much

more likely to be incarcerated. “Eighty-nine percent of the people who are in there are black and Latino, so I think that shows how investing in the criminal justice system is disproportionately impacting black and Latino communities,” he said. Nationwide, in 2013, one of every 55 white Americans was in the criminal-justice system, compared with one of 18 black residents and one of 34 Latinos. Pimentel said the report’s recommendations include redirecting money now flowing into the criminal-justice system toward initiatives that invest in people. “Which could be more jobs, livable jobs with wages that take folks out of poverty,” she added. Is Your Clothes Dryer Energy Efficient? By Desert Star Staff If you are looking to be more energy efficient at home, you are in good company. Consumers nationwide are looking for new ways to reduce their energy use in their singlefamily homes, condominiums and apartments because using less energy helps save money and builds a more sustainable planet. To check its free rating and review other resources, visit aham.org. Consider Ventless Dryers: This relatively new type of dryer is changing the energy efficiency equation. Ventless dryers recycle air within the unit, and offer an ideal way to help reduce energy consumption. They are also gentle on clothes, because they don’t heat the air as much as a traditional dryer. There are two types: condenser and heat pump.

The most efficient are the heat pump dryers, which use a refrigeration system to dry and recycle air before returning it to the drum. Consumers can choose from two Whirlpool brand dryer sizes that range from a compact model to a 7.4 cu ft HybridCare True Ventless Heat Pump Dryer. Ventless dryers have another major benefit. They can fit into spaces beyond the laundry room -- such as closets in condominiums and apartments -- because there’s no need for a vent, just an electrical outlet. With many home designs moving from traditional layouts with a laundry room to open designs,

this allows a washer and dryer to be placed virtually anywhere in the home. The future of sustainability is often more simple than we envision. While smart technology sparks the imagination, valuable innovations will focus on the tried-and-true benefits of making appliances energy and water efficient, while maintaining a standard of high quality. Energy efficient solutions can not only meet expectations of resilience and sustainability, but also provide more options for homeowners and multifamily dwelling residents. StatePoint

“India: Nature’s Wonderland” is hosted by wildlife expert Liz Bonnin, actress Freida Pinto (“Slumdog Millionaire”) and mountaineer Jon Gupta. Together they reveal the wonders of India’s natural world. From the Valley of the Flowers in West Himalaya and turtles hatching on the beaches of the east coast to the lions of the Gir Forest, this fascinating DVD reveals a land packed full of unrivaled wildlife experiences. In the Gir Forest, home to the world’s last Asiatic lion, we watch two females hunting. Next, we witness elephants walking through a tea plantation, then meet a man who has dedicated his life to the hoolock gibbon, India’s only ape, which starts its morning by singing. In part 2, we go

to the desert town of Khichan where each winter morning thousands of demoiselle cranes invade the area. Then Freida rides an elephant in order to get close to one of India’s rarest sights—the onehorned rhino. Not only does she see one in the tall grass, she also observes her baby. Then Jon goes to a beach on the Bay of Bengal where he witnesses the mass hatching of olive ridley turtles as more than a million baby turtles erupt from nests buried in the sand. Running time: 120 minutes.

Desert Trip day two, Oct. 15th was my favorite night of the event. The night started with Neil Young doing three songs as a solo act. He played guitar and sang by himself on the stage, then the band came on for the rest of the set. Most of the acts start on time or just a little later than stated. No long wait for an artist to appear on stage. A plus for Goldenvoice to keep the event on target. The performance by Young left guitar fans in a frenzy as they played a lot of guitar only songs. It was like a battle of guitars as they played together to make this amazing sound. The songs went on for a long time, and each guitarist seemed to be in his own world as he played and seemed unaware of the audience as they played in tandem for themselves as much as for the audience. The band consisted of mostly younger men, and their talent is not to be denied as each proved Desert Trip Day 3 ended on Sunday Oct. 16th with artists The WHO. This was an up-tempo band and there were a lot of screaming in their songs that are a signature in their performance. Pete TOWNSHEND served as the spokesman for The WHO. He said he left the band back in 88 for a rest and was so happy to be back with them. He thanked all for attending and hoped they would be able to come back again next year. This event was a thrill for the band as well as for the fans. He said that someone said people came to see them croak on stage as everyone knows that most of the artists are in their 70s and have been performing for 50 or 60 years. THE WHO had the audience swaying to some of their songs. TOWNSHEND did his usual moves playing the guitar that consisted of swinging his arms and strumming the guitar on the downbeat. Vocalist Roger Daltrey didn’t stand still on the stage either while playing the guitar and singing. He managed to pull off his screams in full force every time. The audience

amount of people attending. The STONES played some of my best loved songs, including ANGIE, one of my alltime favorite hit. So exhilarating to watch up close like that and actually watch the talent these men have. They played for almost two hours. Everyone got their monies worth when Paul McCartney came on Stage. Sir Paul never seems to want to end the show. He played everyone’s favorites and kept the fans mesmerized by his performance. Sir Paul added some new songs from last weekend. He would go from playing the piano to standing in front of the stage to play the guitar. He played on a high platform and said it was a little windy up there. You can almost feel his love for what he does. It is not just a job for him because he loves what he does, and he loves the audience and his fans. He thanked everyone for coming to Desert Trip and

loved them. I was told they played the identical songs on Weekend 1. Townsend said that all the performers in this event have known each other for years as they are all in the same business and are friends, no competition among them. The Who did an instrumental called THE ROCK that did just that, rock. It seems each night had someone playing the Harmonica. SIR PAUL played the Ukulele. THE WHO played tambourines. There were few horns in the bands but seems like there were all kinds of instruments played, even an Organ. This event brought out many celebrities to hear these musical icons perform. It seems all the band members are also showmen as they perform. Rogers Waters came on stage and sang a lot of the Pink Floyd songs. Their music is a lot different than the other bands. There were two young women singers that sang a song with no words. Waters in known for his political views. It was reported many people didn’t like it when he bashed Trump on the first weekend. said he loved CA. He thanked all those that came from so far away just for this concert. You can feel the sincerity behind his words. AWESOME. Sir Paul played for almost 3 hours. He had special guests this weekend when Rihanna showed up to sing a duet with Sir Paul and Neil Young also came on stage to do a guitar duet. The fireworks went off after his performance about midnight, but Sir Paul was not done. He came back out, said DO YOU WANT TO CONTINUE, and proceeded to do another half-hour or more. He sang a song for everyone who had a birthday. He gave tribute songs to his fallen comrades in the BEATLES, John Lennon and George Harrison. It was a magical night. He sang HEY JUDE and when the concert ended, the fans were singing HEY JUDE as they walked toward their cars. A tribute to a great artist and his works. of his caliber should use the stage to promote their views. He is a musician and should stick to that. I was not comfortable with his Black Lives Matter theme as I think ALL LIVES MATTER. I must thank GOLDENVOICE for a fantastic, thrilling, event and hope they do it again next year. The acoustics were first rate; volunteers were friendly and helpful. A variety of Food and drink stations were all over so no one had to go a long way to eat, and water stations were available. Lots of bathrooms all over to make sure no one had to go very far. Water was sold everywhere, as it was still hot in the afternoon. ADA parking was adequate this time. The photo exhibit was amazing. This special event was well worth going to. I was not allowed a photographer pass so my photos will either not get published, or they will use someone who had access for photography. Maybe next year but felt privileged to be able to report about the event. October 19, 2016

Lizard Boy: Modern Mythology + Age-Old Desires = Monster Hit By Lisa Lyons, Theater Critic Special to Desert Star Weekly When Seattle Repertory Theatre’s Artistic Director Jerry Manning commissioned an original musical piece from Justin Huertas, a talented actor, composer, singer, musician and illustrator, he didn’t know what it would be exactly, but Manning and adapter/dramaturg Andrea Allen were willing to bet it would be amazing. Lucky for them and audiences everywhere, that bet paid off in a big way with LIZARD BOY, the most original musical seen onstage since New York Fringe favorite “Urinetown” ten years ago. It’s a perfect opening show for the Diversionary’s 31st Season, as it exemplifies the artistic vision and boundarypushing support of the theatre to the LGBTQ community. LIZARD BOY is a modern day comic-book, angst filled coming of age story focusing on Trevor (played to perfection by Justin Huertas), a lonely creative young man with a, shall we say, unusual affliction. Due to an other-worldly accident as a child following the eruption of Mount St. Helens, and an unfortunate run in with a firebreathing dragon, Trevor has morphed into a half-man/half lizard-like creature, his skin glistening with iridescent green scales. Talk about being the ultimate loner; Trevor channels his pain and anger into his music and his art, which is mostly sketches of superheroes and disturbing visions that run through his dreams. At “Monsterfest”, the one day of the year in Seattle when everyone dons monster costumes, Trevor feels safe enough to venture out where he blends into the

crowd without comment. His newfound confidence enables him to decide to reach out on the gay dating website “Grindr” in search of his first (and last) love. Instead, he hooks up with a charming, goofy musician named Cary (winningly played by William A. Williams) who is new himself to Seattle. Even more than romance, Cary is desperately seeking a connection for friendship and maybe more. The two meet and decide to check out “Monsterfest” when Trevor spies a magazine on Cary’s coffee table with the image of the woman who has been haunting his dreams lately: the tough-as-nails singer named Siren (a powerhouse performance by Kirsten deLohr Helland). After going to see her perform at a local club, Trevor shares his songs and visions with Siren, setting off a chain of events that grow and explode into a classic battle of good vs evil, love over hate, acceptance over rejection. The show has been a work in progress and labor of love for the three performers who are amazingly synchronized in their focus and dedication to seeing this project through to a possible transfer to New York (fingers crossed). LIZARD BOY owes some of its indie-pedigree to off-Broadway musicals like “Urinetown” also “Brooklynite”, which was directed and cowritten by Tony-winning “Spring Awakening” director Michael Mayer. Huertas cites “Spring Awakening” as a rich source of inspiration to him, both as a performer and eventually a playwright and composer. His inspired mashups of classical cello with beatbox

Cast of Lizard Boy and ukeleles lends originality and humor to his achingly personal score. The show features sixteen songs (with two just added for this production at Diversionary) and all featured instruments are played by the three talented performers to great effect. Huertas is the soul of this musical. Not just because it’s his own story at its base, but he makes you feel so much of what’s in his heart from the first moment he appears. His multiple talents are perfectly showcased and he reveals the beauty in Trevor, peeling off the layers of protective emotional garb hiding his reptilian appearance. As Siren, the “dream girl” with a blood red soul, deLohr is a fierce and powerful presence with an amazing vocal range. She can be really scary, but her slightly warped sense of humor and snarky lipped delivery makes her less menacing and somehow more vulnerable. She’s a bona

fide star in Seattle, having played everyone from Maria Von Trapp to Sally Bowles, winning awards along the way. Williams has what could have been a supporting role, but he expands Cary’s initial “twinkie” persona into a real guy with hidden depth which he slowly reveals to Trevor through songs and gestures. He never gives up on love, and you find yourself rooting for these two to work everything out and defeat that dragon, once and for all. Kudos must go to not only the young performers who maintain their energy and focus for 95 non-stop minutes, but also to director Brandon Vie who deeply understood the message that Huertas was conveying and handled it with care. The thrift shop retro costumes by Erik Andor, and dark foreboding scenic design by Ron Logan are illuminated by the lighting design of Curtis Mueller. The atmospheric sound effects were the perfect undertone for

the show thanks to Lighting Designer Matt Lescault-Wood and Mix Engineer TJ Fucella. The script still needs some tweaking here and there (the ambiguous final image), but I have no doubt that the production will be fine-tuned to perfection. The show is predicted to sell out during its run, so just in case you can’t see it, I highly advise you listen to the soundtrack which is available via CDBaby, Spotify and Amazon. You will hear the soaring harmonies, tight musical riffs and powerful voices to best advantage and prepare yourself for seeing the show live - if you can score some tickets, that is. LIZARD BOY is at the Diversionary Theatre, 4545 Park Blvd.in University Heights. It plays Thursday at 7 pm, Friday and Saturday at 8 pm and Sunday at 2 pm through October 30. Tickets may be purchased online through the Diversionary website.

RBC Bank Kicks Off Snowbird Season in Palm Springs Despite the weak Canadian dollar, there are still strong investment opportunities for snowbirds By Desert Star Staff RALEIGH, N.C.– RBC Bank, the market leader in cross-border banking and real estate financing for Canadians visiting or staying longerterm in the United States, is welcoming Canadians back to Palm Springs and other popular U.S. destinations for another season of golf, warm weather and relaxation. However, because the Canadian dollar (CAD) experienced a 16 percent decline against the U.S. dollar over the past year, some of these travelers are looking for ways to reduce costs. According to the 2016 RBC U.S. Travel Poll, two-in-10 travelers (23 percent) say they plan to cut back on shopping, dining or entertainment when in the U.S. Despite currency concerns, there are opportunities for Canadians returning to the Palm Springs area, such as: · Homes in the U.S. are less expensive than

comparable homes in Canada. Canadians can get more square footage for less money in the U.S. The median cost of a home in Palm Springs is approximately $320,800 U.S. dollars, compared to $605,250 U.S. dollars1 in Toronto. Additionally, renting out the property during the offseason can cover mortgage payments, U.S. taxes and more. Vacancy rates are also at a 20-year low, according to Moody’s Analytics. · Refinancing in the U.S. can be lucrative. Consider refinancing if you bought a home in the U.S. between 2009 and 2013, when the CAD was at or around parity with the U.S. dollar. Your home has likely appreciated by as much as 12 – 15 percent per year. Homeowners are in a unique and favorable position to take advantage of appreciation on their home and the strong U.S. dollar. “The financial landscape

is constantly evolving and we want to help our Canadian customers maximize their U.S. investments,” said Alain Forget, director of business development at RBC bank. “We are excited to welcome Canadian snowbirds back to the U.S. and help support their cross-border lifestyle.” RBC Bank enables

Canadians to easily access and manage their money on both sides of the border. To learn more about RBC Bank’s cross-border services, visit www.RBCBank.com. About RBC Bank RBC Bank (Georgia), N.A., a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Royal Bank of Canada, provides U.S.

banking solutions to RBC consumer clients with a crossborder lifestyle, including snowbirds, expats, student, businesses and more. RBC Bank pioneered cross border banking and has been serving clients who visit, shop, study or relocate in the U.S. for more than ten years. Today, the Bank provides everyday.

A Hearty Italian Dinner: Beef Cannelloni and Wine

By Desert Star Staff This fall, be inspired by the warm, welcoming style of Italian entertaining: turn to the kitchen, the heart of the home. “Italian gatherings are relaxing and fun, so don’t worry about décor or timing the main course to the minute guests arrive,” says Emilia Nardi, owner of the award-wining Brunello producer Tenute Silvio Nardi winery of Montalcino in Tuscany. “It is about bringing family and friends together to have a good time. Dinners should be a joy for both the guests and the hosts.” An avid cook and host, Emilia Nardi recommends having the wine and appetizers ready for when guests arrive. Wine should be opened to breathe. A Caprese salad of freshly harvested ingredients is a hearty selection. A charcuterie board, while simple to prep, will keep guests appeased as the main course cooks. Pair these delicious bites with a structured wine. For the main course, Emilia Nardi, suggests taking a page from her family cookbook with this recipe for Beef Cannelloni. She recommends pairing the dish with the Tenute Silvio Nardi Rosso di Montalcino 2014 (SRP: $25.99), a fruit-forward medium-bodied wine with a velvety texture or the Brunello di Montalcino 2011 (SRP $68.99), a full-bodied wine that offers intense aromas and flavors of red berries offset by notes of leather and incense. More information about the Tenute Silvio Nardi winery, which produces finely rendered Brunellos that highlight the specific terroir of the plots where they are grown, can be found at tenutenardi.com. This autumn, keep guests full and happy with Italian food and drink that befits the season! StatePoint

MUSIC Recent Reissues, Live Sets and Dolby Memoir Astound BY ROBERT KINSLER

Several truly great rock albums have been reissued via deluxe and expanded must-have versions, while new concert recordings from the Mavericks and Bryan Adams, and an engrossing memoir from groundbreaking music maker Thomas Dolby make for a winning mix of music-minded offerings.

Artist: Big Star Title: Complete Third (Omnivore Recordings) You might like if you enjoy: Radiohead, Big Star, the Posies Tell me more: More than 40 years after it was recorded, Big Star’s “Third” LP is receiving a well-deserved deluxe and expanded treatment that inspires with every play. This 3-disc audio CD release “Complete Third” (soon to be available on vinyl) is sure to please every fan of the legendary Memphis-spawned power pop cult heroes, whose third album was recorded in 1974 and was deemed non-commercial and shelved resulting in the band breaking up late that year. The third album was ultimately released commercially in 1978, and subsequently has earned its place as one of the greatest albums of all time. The newlyissued “Complete Third” is packed with 69 tracks; the

release’s three discs chronicle the path of “Third” from acoustic demos, rough and alternate mixes to the final masters. The printed material included in the package is terrific, including a wealth of photos, an essay from journalist/A&R executive Bud Scoppa, and notes from surviving Big Star member Jody Stephens, producer-musician Mitch Easter (Let’s Active), Gary Louis (of the Jayhawks), Susanna Hoffs and Debbi Peterson (of the Bangles), and many more. Artist: Temple of the Dog Title: Temple of the Dog (A&M Records) You might like if you enjoy: Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Mother Love Bone Tell me more: Temple of the Dog released its self-titled album in April 1991, with the newly-issued 25th anniversary of the release revisiting the landmark disc featuring the legendary lineup of singer Chris Cornell (of Soundgarden fame), rhythm guitarist Stone Gossard, bassist Jeff Ament, lead guitarist Mike McCready and drummer Matt Cameron, along with Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder. There are so many treasures across this wide-ranging set, but a demo of the bluesy slide guitar foray “Black Cat,” live and alternative versions of the rock staple “Say Hello 2 Heaven” and an early demo of the grunge rocker “Angel of Fire” are among

those I discovered. “Temple of the Dog” is available via four different configurations; a fourdisc version (reviewed here) features the original album newly mixed by Brendan O’ Brien, dozens of previouslyunreleased tracks and demos, and live performances and videos. Recalling his rise from a struggling teenager barely making ends meet to fortuitous meetings with the celebrated likes of producer Robert “Mutt” Lange, Andy Partridge of XTC and pop icon Michael Jackson, Dolby expertly revisits his youth, the highs and lows of his musical career (including “She Blinded Me With Science”) and recent success as a Silicon Valley innovator and university professor. Domestic Disturbance Calls Among Most Dangerous For Police By Vince Marino COACHELLA VALLEY -When Officer Vega and Officer Zerebny responded to the report of a domestic disturbance on October 8th, they were doing what police officers do on a daily basis. But their deaths reinforced why law enforcement officials never take these types of calls lightly. “We’ll get a call from somebody who says, either from inside the home or a neighbor hears some loud noises. Something in the home is going on. A husband

14

DesertSTAR

and wife. Boyfriend, girlfriend. They’re arguing. Neighbors may think that it’s getting a little out of control. So somebody may call us saying that we need to go check on a particular house,” said Sgt. Dan Marshall of the Indio Police Department. Law enforcement officials say although domestic disturbance calls might seem straightforward, police officers can never be too careful. “Anytime we go into an unknown situation like that where tempers are already high, emotions are running

high, we don’t really know the back story, and we don’t know why we’re getting called there. We might not have the history of the people that are involved. So they are of the most dangerous calls that law enforcement do respond to,” said Marshall. One of the biggest hurdles for police officers is addressing all of the unknown variables. “You could take one of the people into custody and then the other person could turn on the police officers. You know, you’re in a home; October 19, 2016

you know your home better than anybody. You know where a possible weapon could be. You know where the hiding places are. You

know where the pitfalls within your home are. And we’re just coming in for the first time,” Marshall said. Source: KMIR

Parsons, AARP Massachusetts had the best score on the gun violence index; and Louisiana, a state with relatively permissive gun laws, scored the worst. “What we found is that the ten states that have the weakest gun laws collectively have rates of violence that are more than three times higher that the ten states with the strongest gun laws,” she said. Researchers looked at ten different types of gun violence, including suicides, homicides, and mass shootings. They

found that laws that require background checks, triggerlock rules and training requirements coincided with lower rates of gun violence. In less than a month, Nevadans will vote on Question One, an initiative to require background checks for all gun sales, including at gun shows. Parsons AARP the research indicates if Question One is enacted, the law would make people facing domestic abuse safer. “Making sure that all

gun sales in the state are required to undergo a background check will help keep guns out of the hands of domestic abusers who are not supposed to be able to buy them,” she explained. The report also noted that high-capacity weapons from states with relatively lax gun laws, including Nevada, are pouring into neighboring states like California, which compromises the effect of the gun laws there.

The incident occurred at approximately 10:20 a.m., after a 33-year-old man approached the checkpoint in a white 2008 Ford Expedition. During primary inspection, a Border Patrol detection canine alerted to the vehicle. Agents referred the man to the secondary inspection area for a closer examination. After a more thorough inspection of the vehicle, agents discovered a hidden compartment in the driver side rear quarter panel of the SUV. The compartment contained 26-vacuumed sealed packages wrapped in cellophane which 22 packages contained methamphetamine and four packages contained heroin. The methamphetamine weighed 31.10 pounds with

an estimated street value of $124,400. The heroin weighed 8.04 pounds with an estimated street value of $80,400. “Our K-9 agents play a vital role in the safeguarding of our communities by helping prevent dangerous drugs, such as these, from reaching our city streets,” said Assistant Chief Patrol Agent David S. Kim. The man, a United States citizen, the vehicle, and the narcotics were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration for further investigation. Since fiscal year 2017, which started Oct. 1, 2016, El Centro Sector seized more than 58.9 pounds of methamphetamine and 18.11 pounds of heroin.

Classic english gothic ghost story on stage at Groves Cabin Theatre

Teri Conley

By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic The Groves Cabin Theatre of Morongo Valley may have only twenty-two seats and a postage-stamp sized stage for the actors to perform their magic, but that has not stopped them from producing quality work. To date, the tiny theatre under the artistic direction of founder Joy Groves, has garnered more than sixty Desert Theatre League (DTL) awards for excellence over the years. Their current production of the classic English ghost-story drama “The Woman in Black” , written by Stephen Mallatratt, based on the novella of the same name by Susan Hill, is another example of how two talented male actors, and a female title character can bring a compelling Gothic tale to life
