Free three day event wrapped up in Cabazon on Sunday By KMIR News Staff CABAZON -- A three-day celebration of Native American culture, art and cuisine wrapped up in Cabazon on Sunday. The free, three-day event brought an estimated 25,000 people from all across the U.S. and Canada. Sunday’s closing ceremony wrapped up the 24th annual Thunder and Lightning Powwow. “When I’m dancing I just like to enjoy myself and feel the music and how it makes me feel, so if a song comes on

that makes me feel good; I like to dance hard to it,” said Joey Chief, visiting from Canada. More than 650 dancers and 25 drum groups from across the U.S., and Canada competed. “I have family that lives here actually; I travel throughout Powwow country,” said Chief. The Morongo Band of Mission Indians is celebrating its 24th annual Thunder and Lightning Powwow. “It’s one of the bigger powwows in the powwow circuit throughout the year; a lot of dancers come to this

powwow... The importance of it is that we continue our generation, the generation of singing and dancing, keep our traditions intact; we teach our little ones what powwow is,” said Darryl Schrock, co-emcee for the Morongo powwow. 9-year-old Shandiin has been attending the powwow for four years, this year she competed as a dancer. “It’s exciting, and there’re a lot of people watching, and I get kind of nervous sometimes,” Continues on Page 2
