24th Annual Morongo Powwow

Free three day event wrapped up in Cabazon on Sunday By KMIR News Staff CABAZON -- A three-day celebration of Native American culture, art and cuisine wrapped up in Cabazon on Sunday. The free, three-day event brought an estimated 25,000 people from all across the U.S. and Canada. Sunday’s closing ceremony wrapped up the 24th annual Thunder and Lightning Powwow. “When I’m dancing I just like to enjoy myself and feel the music and how it makes me feel, so if a song comes on

that makes me feel good; I like to dance hard to it,” said Joey Chief, visiting from Canada. More than 650 dancers and 25 drum groups from across the U.S., and Canada competed. “I have family that lives here actually; I travel throughout Powwow country,” said Chief. The Morongo Band of Mission Indians is celebrating its 24th annual Thunder and Lightning Powwow. “It’s one of the bigger powwows in the powwow circuit throughout the year; a lot of dancers come to this

powwow... The importance of it is that we continue our generation, the generation of singing and dancing, keep our traditions intact; we teach our little ones what powwow is,” said Darryl Schrock, co-emcee for the Morongo powwow. 9-year-old Shandiin has been attending the powwow for four years, this year she competed as a dancer. “It’s exciting, and there’re a lot of people watching, and I get kind of nervous sometimes,” Continues on Page 2

Save Energy! Save Money! According to Energy.gov, a typical American family spends nearly $2,000 per year on their home energy bills. Much of that money, however, is wasted on air leaks and drafts. Your regional and local governments are committed to helping you save energy and money. Why? Because saving energy - conserving, practicing energy efficiency, and using renewable energy resources - is a natural part of who we are and what we do. And when you save money while you’re saving energy, everyone wins!

Falling Gas Prices Have to be a Good Thing-Right?

will be less than $3 a gallon. We haven’t seen that since the fall of 2010. Experts attribute this to two primary reasons: significant increases in US energy production and a global decrease in the demand for gasoline. If the decline in prices is due to global weakness for demand it could mean that the worldwide economy is struggling and that might mean slowing profits for corporations and ultimately more pressure on our economy. The past four years have seen a similar trend. Gas prices have fallen from September through the end of the year only to begin rising again in the New Year. The low in recent prices was in the fall of 2010. Gasoline jumped from $2.60 a gallon to more than $4 by the summer of 2011. This time could be different because of the surge in US production. In states such as North Dakota (Bakken crude), business is booming thanks to the new oil finds. Unemployment is the lowest in the nation at 2.8% compared to 7.4% in California. California has nearly twothirds of American shale-oil reserves. However, getting California oil to market is considerably more expensive than it is for Bakken crude. Falling oil prices means that very little new production will come from the Golden

makes sense that we do the same in the US. The US is 30% more efficient with its energy consumption today than it was just 20 years ago. Smarter technology, more energy efficient vehicles, etc. are all helping us do a much better job in how much energy we consume. The world is changing before our eyes. Energy is a key

force behind many economic realities. If we are going to do the absolute best job possible for today and for our children, the US must have a strategic energy policy. attached, while planned developments are detached homes. However, this is not always the case, and homebuyers and their REALTORs® should not be fooled by a project’s appearance – what matters is not its appearance, but what the governing documents say. There are many condominiums in which the homes are detached, and many planned developments in which the homes are attached. The CC&Rs and a map (subdivision map or condominium plan) will indicate which type of property you have, and will define its boundaries. Planned developments normally have less common area than condominium projects, so the condominium association usually has more responsibility to maintain and repair. However this is not always true, as sometimes an association of detached homes is set up as a condominium because the subdivider did not have enough land to satisfy zoning setback or lot size requirements –in such condominiums, the “unit” is the entire building and perhaps even the yards around it. The other significance of the condominium compared

to planned development is that under Civil Code 4780, unless the governing documents say otherwise, termite treatment is the condominium association responsibility but not the planned development association responsibility. This can be a major problem for attached planned developments, because the association needs the power to tent an entire building – but usually must amend its CC&Rs to add that power. U n f o r t u n a t e l y, m o s t subdividers do not spend much time customizing the original CC&R document to the specifics of the project they are developing, so your governing documents, if original, may not accurately fit your association. Thanks, Kelly

Dear D. O.: Earthquake insurance is a good idea if your association can afford it. Some governing documents require the board to keep such insurance in place- check yours to see if it does. If your association is a condominium, and has responsibility to maintain and repair the buildings, then your association might be in a financial disaster if major earthquake hit your project. Because of the expense of such insurance, and on the other hand the potential consequence of not having it, this is one of those decisions on which the board should seek member input. However, again, to avoid having to potentially abandon the project in the event of major earthquake damage, such insurance is a good idea. Thanks for your question (and hoping none of us need to use that insurance any time soon), Kelly Kelly G. Human Trafficking in California

By Desert Star Staff Human trafficking takes many forms, including recruiting, smuggling, transporting, harboring, buying or selling a person for prostitution, domestic servitude, sweatshop labor, migrant work, agricultural labor, bondage, and involuntary servitude. In addition to U.S. citizens, each year about 17,500 people are brought into the United States and held against their will as victims of human trafficking. Riverside County is at the crossroads of two major trafficking corridors — I-10 from Houston to Los Angeles, and I-15 from the Mexican border to the San Joaquin Valley and Las Vegas. More than two dozen children in California were

rescued during a week-long crackdown on commercial sex trafficking across the nation in June, 2013, and 38 pimps were arrested. Today, teens are being recruited in high schools, at the mall, and through the Internet. Conservatively, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children estimates that at least 100,000 children each year are caught up in the world of child prostitution, with the average age of entrance being 12-14 years old. In Riverside County alone, as of October 2012, Riverside County Sheriff’s deputies have responded to and investigated over 4,000 reported runaway incidents. The Riverside County Anti-Human Trafficking Task-

force (RCAHT) was formed in September 2010 to combat human trafficking, including the exploitation of any person through force, fraud, fear and/or coercion. Million Kids, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, combats human trafficking and serves on the Riverside County Anti-Human Trafficking Task Force. Executive Director Opal Singleton has written “We are experiencing a disturbing phenomenon in America. Pimps, predators and gangs are recruiting vulnerable and unsuspecting young people into a degrading world of prostitution and exploitation. Adding to the mix is sexual media hype, uninformed parents, technology, easy money

schemes, cyber underground, and the most serious concern of all is that gangs and organized crime have chosen to develop the exploitation of our young people to make it their next big growth industry. In light of these frightening statistics, World Affairs Council of the Desert (WACD) is hosting a special event to educate local youth and their parents about human trafficking. It will take place in Rancho Mirage High School’s 600-seat auditorium on November 6 from 6-8 pm. They will show the documentary film “Not My Life, the first film to depict the practices of human trafficking and modern slavery on a global scale. Following the screening, there will be a panel

discussion and Q&A session with Riverside County Sheriff’s Human Trafficking Task Force and other leading authorities. The WACD will host 300 students, age 15 and older, to attend at no charge, and an accompanying parent can also attend for free. The public is invited ($10), and tickets will be available across the Coachella Valley. Additionally, expert Opal Singleton will speak about the subject “Human Trafficking: A Worldwide Plague at the November 23 monthly dinner at Renaissance Esmeralda Resort & Spa in Indian Wells. For more information about either event, call World Affairs Council of the Desert at 760.322.7711.

By Gitzel Puente PALM SPRINGS, Ca. - The parents of 27-year-old Joshua Sznaider who died October 2, 2012 in Palm Springs are suing the Palm Springs Police Department and City for using “unreasonable use of deadly force against their son. At the time of the incident, police responded to the intersection of Baristo and Sunrise Way where Sznaider was seen running in and out of traffic,

later inside an assisted living facility and back into the street. Some witnesses from a year ago described his behavior as erratic and as having “super powers. Police say Sznaider was under a lethal amount of methamphetamine at the time of the incident. They used a carotid control hold after they failed to subdue him with a taser gun twice. Sznaider’s family believes the chokehold was unnecessary and

likely the cause of death. Today, police released a statement reading in part, “This has been an emotional incident for all involved. The Palm Springs police officers who responded to this incident acted appropriately and professionally in handling this difficult situation. The family is asking any witnesses from the incident to come forward and contact 844687-5674 or info@answers4josh. com Source: KMIR

Top 12 Tips To Overcome Procrastination Edited by Art Kunkin From a valuable but impossibly longer cyberspace article by Marya Jan “How many times do you make a promise to do a certain task and then do – nothing? “ “How often do you set a goal but never seem to make any progress towards achieving it?” “Are you a writer who doesn’t write, a painter who doesn’t paint or an entrepreneur who never starts a venture?” If so, then you have first hand knowledge about the inner resistance that results in procrastination. “Do you know how to overcome that resistance?” “Resistance is the most toxic force on the planet. It arises from within and takes the shape of procrastination, lack of motivation, insecurities, self doubt, and fear.” “Resistance stops you from taking the first step in becoming truly professional.” We are publishing here extracts from a very important internet article on the subjects of procrastination and resistance written by blogging coach Marya Jan. This article is available on the internet under the title, “Overcome Procrastination: Steven Pressfield’s Top 12 Tips. However, since the original article is much too is long in its cyberspace form for the space we have available in this newspaper, I have taken the liberty of editing and rewriting this article here for the benefit of our readers. The original cyberspace

article is itself a summary of three important books by Steven Pressfield titled “The War of Art” and “Turning Pro” and “Do The Work.” In her introduction, Marya Jan made the insightful statement that “These books literally changed the way I approached work, relationships, life. But mostly, my vocation.” We publish this summary of her summary here because it contains very important advice on organizing a project that I believe most of us could use. Therefore, I suggest that you first read this summary and then, if you have a computer on the internet, go to the original article. Of course, the best procedure would be to spend some time with one or more of the three Pressfield books. For now, I am pleased to give you my short edited version of Marya Jan’s shortened presentation of Pressfield’s work. 1: Show Up Every Day! “This is the secret that real artists know and wannabe writers don’t. When we sit down and work, we become like a magnetized rod that attracts iron filings. Ideas come. Insights accrete. If you are a writer, aim to sit in your chair first. 2: Stay On The Job! “Once you are sitting down, are you going to check your email for the umpteenth time, or hang out on the social media? Or are you going to do some research? Get rid of the distractions and stay put. Keep going.” 3: Commit To The Long Haul!

“Nobody said this is going to You need your materials and be easy. Nobody promised you information before you can riches the next day.” begin.” 4: Be Patient! “Committed for the long haul? Now you need patience. Bucket loads of,it.” . 5: Seek Order! “The difference between an amateur and a professional is in their habits. An amateur has amateur habits. A professional has professional habits. We can never free ourselves from habit. But we can replace bad habits with good ones. “Do you have a schedule that you follow? Do you have a routine in place?” Don’t think.” 6: Act In The Face Of Fear! “The more scared we are of a work or calling, the more sure we can be that we have to do it. Fear is good. Brave is someone who is not without fear but who moves ahead in spite of it. “Yes, you are afraid. So am I, but we still have to work, okay?”

9: Don’t Over-Identify With The Job ! “You are a professional, but that’s not only who you are. Try and take a step back. Leave some wiggle room to improve, discard or alter your offering.” 10: Ask For Help! “A pro doesn’t feel like he knows everything, or can figure out everything on his own. He seeks out a knowledgeable teacher and listens with both ears.” “Surround yourself with people who support you. And when things get hard, ask for help. 11: Don’t Take Failure Or Success Personally! “The professional concentrates on the work and allows rewards to come or not come.” 12: Self-Validate! “Don’t be so hard on yourself. You are not perfect but you don’t need everybody’s approval. However you do need your own.”

7: Accept No Excuses! “What other excuses besides fear could derail us? There are plenty: You are not good enough, you don’t have the time to do this, there is too much competition, nobody cares what you do, it is About the author: The original not perfect … blah blah blah. CV Rep Theatre is Back with “The Chosen” Five Outstanding Actors, -All Making Their Debut On The Cv Repertory Stage.

By Desert Star Staff Rancho Mirage, CV Rep Theatre is back for its Fourth outstanding season with a mélange of four plays by four critically acclaimed playwrights, that celebrate some of the distinct cultures that resonate in America today. Opening this season is the award-winning play,“THE CHOSEN,” first a top-selling novel by Chaim Potok, and then successfully adapted for the stage by Aaron Posner and Chaim Potok. The Chosen concerns the

tensions of living a religious life in a secular society. It is the “now classic” story of two fathers and two sons and two very different Jewish communities, five blocks and a world apart in Williamsburgh, Brooklyn, New York, in the 1940s. Set against the backdrop of the times, The Chosen remains not essentially political or religious, but deeply human. As the boys grow to manhood, they are forced to learn important lessons about each other, their fathers, themselves. The Chosen premiered

in 1999 at the Arden Theater in Philadelphia. Quotes from The Pittsburgh’s Post Gazette …“The Chosen makes for an exotic and powerful drama,” and The Wall Street Journal’s review…“Anyone who finds this play is finding a jewel. Its themes are profound and universal,” reflected the feelings of the ‘standing-room room only audiences. This heartfelt story of friendship and important choices that two families make on the path to understanding, respect and reconciliation, still holds true today.

CV Rep’s Artistic Director speaks to his decision to open his Fourth Season with The Chosen. “Although most people may not know the play, THE CHOSEN,” says Ron Celona, “They are familiar with the novel or film of the same title, so it was my feeling that this wonderful play would be the perfect fit to kick off our season of the American Melting Pot.” Ron continues about his cast. “The audition process was difficult since this is a period piece that requires strong male actors of many ages. By KMIR News Staff LA QUINTA, Ca. - Kentuckybased health insurance provider Humana is ending its sponsorship of the Humana Challenge men’s golf tournament in La Quinta effective in 2015 -four years ahead of what had been expected to be an eightyear deal, it was announced

today. Nonetheless, ``the future of the tournament is secure and the PGA Tour is confident that a sponsor will be found to replace Humana,’’ according to a PGA Tour statement released from its headquarters in Pointe Vedra Beach, Florida. A search for a replacement

sponsor is already underway, according to the PGA Tour. Desert Classic Charities, the nonprofit that operates the tournament, has begun discussions with a number of prospects, as has the tournament’s other sponsor, the Clinton Foundation, according to the statement. ``Humana has been a wonderful sponsor that has worked diligently to maintain and elevate this tournament through a focus on health and wellbeing, while continuing to have a positive economic and charitable impact on the Coachella Valley,’’ said PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem. Humana, the Clinton Foundation and the PGA stepped in in 2011 and are credited with keeping alive what had been the Bob Hope Classic. ``Humana’s business is changing rapidly,’’ said Tom Noland, Humana’s senior vice president of corporate

Written By: Carolyn W. Gaines On September 26, 2014 at 1:00 PM, Friday my telephone had rung, and I had said,’’Hello” to Concord Record’s Superstar “Kenny Wayne Shepherd” the master of Blues and Rock, who as made his first album at home in Louisiana called Goin’ Home. Shepherd is rock’in his house hit songs like “Looking Back,” “Cut You Loose”, and “Breaking Up” on new Album. I began the interview by asking him: Are you on the Jimi Hendrix Experience Tour? He said,’’Yes, and I am on my way to Memphis”. He sounded like he was eating some good old country food. That moment reminded me of RCA Super Star charming, smooth, flaming, hot-Buddy Guy’s song called,”On The Road” from Guys, buttermilk and cornbread, Album called, Living Proof. A Star, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, is on his way to the Desert: October 11, 2014 at Fantasy Springs Casino to share his talents with “Jimi Hendrix Experience.” Buddy Guy’s guitar player Ric Hall told me the tour is for six-weeks. I must inform all girls that Kenny’s voice on the telephone is pleasant, friendly, happy sounding. He can’t wait to sing Blues and Rock with Johnny Lang, Buddy Guy, and Billy Cox that are Jimi Hendrix’s last living bass player. When I talked to Kenny on the phone, I could feel his spirit of a guitar player that can place ownership on his Fans through all of his Blues guitar licks. Mr. Wayne Shepherd is not Bruce Wayne better known as a charming, handsome, graceful Batman who is running inside his Bat Cave to jump in his Bat car. Girl’s Smile! He can Blues his

Fans or Rock his Fans night after night. He said,” The Jimi Hendrix Experience is closed out each night with the ‘Red House’ Song by Jimi Hendrix’s. I mentioned to him that he could consider singing “Red House” because the song has a lot of feelings. It is a song that you can get lost in while delivering it to your Fans. Let Chat About Kenny Goin’ Home: 1. How did you come up with the name Goin’ Home for your new Concord Record’s Album? He said,” I recorded for first time an Album at home in Louisiana, Goin’ Home. Where I live. I informed him that my father, Roy Gaines; Blues great recorded an instrumental album called, ‘Going Home To See Mama’. He said,”I will have to check that out.” 2. Does Concord Records have World-Wide Distribution? He said,” Yes, but Concord Distributes in United Stated and Australia. 3. Is this Album a One-Off Record Deal with Concord? He said,”It is an Two Albums Record Deal with Concord Records? 4. You received five Grammy Nominations, and Buddy Guy won five Grammy in his career. What do you think about your five nominations? He said,” I have been honored for being nominated, and I hopefully ‘One Day’ to win a Grammy. Some people go their hold life never being nominated or win a Grammy.” 5. What do you think of the contrast between you and Buddy Guy’s nominations?

He said,”I think it great, but I never looked at my nominations in comparison to Buddy Guys, and I did not know Buddy Guy won five Grammy.” 6. Have you ever played Jimi Hendrix’s song “Red House”? He said,” Yes, I play Red House sometimes on Jimi Hendrix Experience Tour at the end of the show.” 7. Do You Sing ‘Red House’ song? He said,”No, Buddy Guy and Billy Cox sing Red House at the end of Jimi Hendrix Experience Tour nightly.” 8. Do you have a message for the African-American Children, who are not playing the Blues? This is the same question that I asked ‘The King of Blues’ B.B. King? Kenny said,”That Blues belongs 100 percent to Black

communications. ``As we continue to shift toward a direct-to-consumer focus, we have to align our marketing and sponsorship commitments to areas that are the best fit for our business.’’ Valerie Alexander, chief marketing officer at the Clinton Foundation, said the organization ``remains dedicated to the tournament’s future success and to promoting health and wellness in the Coachella Valley, yearround, as we have for the past four years.’’ Tournament CEO Marra said Humana made donations to local charities, built three parks, and ``participated in several other initiatives with desert-based organizations.’’ Humana and the Clinton Foundation added a health component to the tournament, organizing a walk, health fair and conference. The Humana and Clinton sponsorships were announced

in 2011, and the first Humana Challenge was in 2012. The tournament has been held since 1960, with Bob Hope lending his name and presence for much of that time. Humana designated an area as ``Bob Hope Square’’ at the tournament, and a trophy named for the late comedian is given to the winner. The tournament also offers perks to retired, reserve and retired military members, who Hope was famous for entertaining. In 2012, the tournament changed from five rounds to four and increased the professional field. Last year, people were invited to play in the amateur part of the 72-hole tournament, replacing the celebrity field. Kids. Black kid’s forefathers, aunties, uncles, Mothers, fathers, and families created Blues. African-American Kids have own Blues for 100 years.” Kenny Wayne Shepherd’s manager invisibly jumped in Roy Gaines titled song called,’Jump In My Cadillac’, and said the interview is over, and He has another interview. I listen to his Album Goin’ Home, and to all of Kenny’s Fans. I must say: He delivered brilliance and intensity that shine a deep connection with his Rock and Blues. His Blues connection goes back to Muddy Waters, and gangster of Love Johnny ‘Guitar’ Watson. Mr. Watson and Mr. Gaines were best friends. Back in late 1980s, my father, Roy Gaines asked me to drop him off at Johnny ‘Guitar’ Watson last concert at Olympian Venue in Los Angeles, California. My

father asked me did I want to go to the concert, and I said,”No.” Mr. Watson was on his way to Japan, and that’s when Radio Mass Media blasted that Johnny ‘Guitar’ Watson had fallen down on stage in Japan and died. Kenny Wayne Shepherd, I like to say thanks for keeping ‘Leadbelly’s’ name alive in the Blues World of Today. Leadbelly knew 800 songs some were Folk, Blues, and Country from the Blues Teacher: Carolyn W. Gaines. ‘I Got To Go Now’ just like Buddy Guy says in his book ‘When I Left Home’. Theatre, Theatre, Theatre—The Fall Season Begins With the approach of fall, the theatre season heats up here in L.A. The fun begins at the Pasadena Playhouse with their production of Cole Porter’s musical gem “Kiss Me Kate” starring multi-Emmy Award winning Wayne Brady (TVs “Let’s Make a Deal,” “Whose Life Is It Anyway?”) as Fred/Petruchio. The Playhouse’s artistic director, Sheldon Epps also directed the musical co-starring Merle Dandridge (Broadway’s “Spamalot” and “Tarzan”) as Lilli/Kate with Joanna A. Jones as Lois/Bianca and Terrance Spencer as Bill/Lucentio and Brad Blaisdell and David Kirk Grant as the two gangsters who sing the comedic delight “Brush Up Your Shakespeare” and if you do “the women you will wow.” The musical takes place at a theatre in Baltimore in 1948 where an all-black company is presenting Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew.” As the play within a play begins we meet Fred and Lilli, the stars of Shakespeare’s “Taming of the Shrew,” who will be playing Petrucio and Kate. They are now divorced, but it is obvious that the flame of love has not totally been extinguished. The music and lyrics by Cole Porter are wonderful and include “ “Another Op‘nin, Another Show,” “Why Can’t You Behave?” And the beautiful love song “So In Love.” Kate also gets to sing the other comedy song, “I Hate Men” as she belts out fun lines like “…...He may have hair upon his chest, but sister, so has Lassie. Oh I hate men!” “Kiss Me Kate” runs now through Sunday, October 12 at the Pasadena Playhouse, 39 South El Molino Ave. in Pasadena. Performances are Tuesday through Friday at 8:00 p.m., Saturdays at 4:00 and 8:00 p.m. and Sundays at 2:00 and 7 p.m. Talkback Tuesdays on Sept. 30 and October 7 following the 8 p.m. performance. Artist: New Model Army Title: Between Wine and Blood (Eagle Rock Entertainment) You might like if you enjoy: Queens of the Stone Age, The Almighty Tell me more: British rockers New Model Army have been challenging the establishment with their mix of post-punk and melodic alternative rock frequently bolstered by political and humanitarian charged themes since the release of their 1984 debut “Vengeance.” Their newly-issued 2-CD release “Between Wine and Blood” features a 6-song mini-album on the first disc including the enthralling “According To You,”

forceful rocker “Angry Planet” and hypnotic “Happy to Be Here.” A full-length 11-track selection of live tracks recorded on the band’s “Between Dog and Wolf” tour in Europe in 2013 fills the second disc. Information: eagle-rock.com.

Artist: Scruffy the Cat Title: The Good Goodbye: Unreleased Recordings 19841990 (Omnivore Recordings) You might like if you enjoy: Wilco, Ryan Adams, early R.E.M. Tell me more: Often credited as the forefather of the altcountry movement, Bostonbased Scruffy the Cat was a college radio giant during the late 1980s. “The Good Goodbye: Unreleased Recordings 19841990” is a revelation for fans of the Charlie Chestermanled outfit, with the collection boasting 23 tracks (only one of which has been previously

released). The lighthearted “Big Fat Monkey’s Hat,” poignant “The Ghost Song” and joyful “Lover’s Day” are among the early recordings included and remain as timeless and thrilling as the era in which they were recorded. While Chesterman lost his battle with colon cancer in November 2013, the outstanding recordings on this collection will forever celebrate his pioneering spirit. Information: omnivorerecordings.com.

Dublin 02 Arena.” The band’s most legendary lineup (singerlead guitarist Francis Rossi, singer-rhythm guitarist Rick Parfitt, bassist Alan Lancaster and drummer John Coghlan) reunited for a short 9-date tour of the UK in March 2013 that was so successful, the band came back earlier this year for another short jaunt that culminated with the April 12, 2014 date in Dublin on this 2-disc audio set. Highlights include the ambitious “Little Lady,” audience favorite Artist: Status Quo “Most Of The Time” (which Title: The Frantic Four’s segues nicely from folk to blues Final Fling - Live At The rock) and Chuck Berry-styled Dublin 02 Arena (Eagle Rock “Backwater.” Information: eagleEntertainment) rock.com. You might like if you enjoy: Humble Pie, Ten Years After Artist: Trigger Hippy Tell me more: The straight- Title: Trigger Hippy (Rounder forward, hard charging boogie Records) rock championed by Status Quo You might like if you enjoy: is celebrated by British quartet The Black Crowes, Joan Status Quo on “The Frantic Osborne, Jackie Greene Four’s Final Fling - Live At The Tell me more: A supergroup

in every sense that counts, Trigger Hippy boasts a who’s who of roots, blues and rock musicians who blend those styles and more on their eponymous 11-disc set. Drummer Steve Gorman (The Black Crowes) describes Trigger Hippy as “a rock band that can jam,” and that fully rings true as he joins forces with singer Joan Osborne, singer/multi-instrumentalist Jackie Greene, guitarist Tom Bukovac (an acclaimed Nashville studio pro) and bassist-singer Nick Govrik (Highwater) on a stunning new album built around amazing musicianship, potent vocals and stellar songwriting. From the beautiful Southern rock ballad “Heartache on the Line” and gospel-styled “Rise Up Singing” to blues-rock burners like “Turpentine” and “Tennessee Mud,” this is clearly one of the strongest album releases of 2014. Art Redefined – Artist Ian Brookfield’s New Exhibit By Alejandro Pais One of The Southland’s most auspicious artists, Ian Brookfield, who spends the majority of his time creating art in Palm Springs, will be displaying that art in his first exhibition entitled ‘Art Redefined’. “My art consists of nine styles, 7 of which I am showing at the brand-new ENGALLERY, in West L.A, says Brookfield. “Each style has anywhere between 5-10 pieces of art. In total, about 35-70 pieces will be showcased. The artwork being shown represents a lot about my life, who I am and how I personally operate. I like developing trends or style. Brookfield spends the majority of his time and inspiration creating his art in Palm Springs. “I think Palm Springs is an oasis, one of those rare places where there’s room to breathe, create and most of all inspire. It also represents the aspect of creating

an environment that nurtures the fundamentals of respect to our environment. The air is fresh; the days are gorgeous; the colors are amazing; the people are fun and filled with energy… It’s just a wonderful place.” Brookfield is well-respected in the Southland for the Driftwood art he finds in Palm Springs. “There are a lot of amazing remnants of Life that leads you. I want to share and show but also create new life from it. More often than not, you wind up looking at nature, alive, dead or ongoing… I see all of that and more in past lives of branches, once trees to which gave air for us to continue to live… - Driftwood is the respect to the air you breathe… and exhale from it the art I wish to share.” “Art Redefined” will be on display Friday, Saturday, October 3rd and 4th at his gallery, ENGALLERY, in West Los Angeles.

Jeff Stone and Bonnie Garcia Face-off Before Elections

By Angela Monroe COACHELLA VALLEY -The November elections are now just weeks away, and local candidates are working to win your vote. Monday night, candidates for our local state senate race faced off in a debate. It’s a race already generating a lot of heat, this is a closely watched race with two Republicans vying for a state senate seat.

Both have strong words for each other. We spoke with both candidates, Bonnie Garcia and Jeff Stone, before Monday’s debate at Rancho Mirage Library. Jeff Stone and Bonnie Garcia are facing off in the race for State Senate District 28. Supervisor Stone is questioning Garcia’s campaign contributors. “We need upstanding

citizens to go to Sacramento that don’t have money that’s been given to them to the tune of two million dollars, you have to ask yourselves, if you’re the beneficiary of two million dollars in special interest money, who are you really going to be up there representing,” said Stone. Former Assemblywoman Bonnie Garcia disagreed, saying both have raised money in their community. “I’m citizen Joe, I’m an

average person, unlike Mr. Stone I couldn’t write myself a 50,000 dollar check, unlike Mr. Stone, I don’t own 11 companies, I couldn’t write checks out of those coffers either for my campaign like he has,” said Garcia. Bonnie Garcia also accuses Stone of abusing power after he flashed a badge during a road rage incident. “It’s inconceivable that a public official could abuse his power so much so that every member of this state that serves in the California legislature would say yes, we need to stop it, and we need to write an anti-Stone law,” said Garcia. Stone addressed this saying a driver claimed the supervisor cut him off, and then became verbally abusive. “I was fearing for my life, I pulled the badge out in an attempt to deescalate the situation, and that’s exactly what I did, I de-escalated the situation, I never represented myself as a deputy sheriff,” said Stone. Still with all the political mudslinging, both Stone and Garcia say they want to

By KMIR News Staff LAKE ELSINORE, Ca. -Local law enforcement officials stepped up their presence at Temescal Canyon High School in Lake Elsinore today after a student was allegedly overheard telling another student there would be a shooting on campus. The conversation was

reported to authorities Saturday, but the informant couldn’t identify the student who allegedly made the threat, according to Riverside County sheriff’s Sgt. Ken Chaffin. ``Upon sharing this information with school officials, arrangements were made to increase the presence of law enforcement on campus

Monday morning,’’ he said. On Sunday, deputies began receiving calls from concerned parents while the rumors about the alleged threat spread on social media. Deputies have identified the person who allegedly made the threat and the informant, both of whom are students at the school, and they are being

questioned, officials said. Their names were not released because of their ages, Chaffin said. The school remained open, ``and we expect students to attend and have a normal day,’’ according to a statement posted on the Lake Elsinore Unified School District’s Twitter and Facebook accounts.

focus on the issues. “Public safety is one of my top priorities, health care is one of my top priorities, help our education system, we rank 48th in the United States, I want to help our local economy, stop sending jobs to other states,” said Stone. “Jobs, the economy and education, today as a grandmother with two granddaughters that are just starting school, I want to make sure that the promise of America is there for them, they receive an education that they can graduate with enormous debt, buy a home and live in our state,” said Garcia. CAL FIRE Local 2881 and Riverside Sheriff’s Association announced their endorsements for Jeff Stone at the press conference his campaign held on Monday. Stone has served on the Riverside County Board of Supervisors since 2004. Garcia has worked for both Democrat and Republican governors, two state senators, and has 20 years experience working at state and local levels. Source: KMIR

Some reports from the scene indicated that attendance at the school was down by about 10 percent as some parents opted to keep their children away from the campus. Anyone with more information about the alleged threat was asked to contact Investigator Tony Pelato at (951) 245-3300. Source: KMIR

Story and Photo by Pat Krause The Tolerance Education Center held a fundraiser on Sunday Sept. 28th. The event was a style show directed by the signature model at Chico’s, Beverlee Greene. Six lovely ladies showed the newest fashions for all ages. The styles ranged from very sporty to a more dressy attire for both daytime and evening. Each model wore two outfits before walking in front of more than 50 women. During the costume changes, Cindy Harp, spoke about how you can make an outfit more appealing. She gave clues on how to make one look thinner by just a few manipulations. A three-quarter sleeve and a turned-up collar will seem to make you look taller. Cindy also showed the various ways to use scarfs and the necessity of jewelry to complete an outfit. Cindy Harp showed how to make a cover up by just twisting a square of fabric and asked a guest to model it. There were discounts for the guests of the Tolerance Education Center, and a percentage of the funds would go to the Center. The center was the dream of Earl Greif who continues to support the Center. Grief is a Holocaust Survivor and wants future generations to know the history of past atrocities. Their hope is to eradicate, Racism, Hatred and Bigotry. The Centers mission is to promote Tolerance, Civility, Respect and Understanding of diversity and rid the world of Bigotry and Hatred. They provide educational tools and tours of the museum. Over 3,000 students toured the facility last year, and they believe they will break attendance records again this year. Speakers, movies and events are a big part of the fundraising efforts to bring their mission to everyone.

S P O RT S For 9th Straight Time, Blackhawks Fly Away With Victory Flag BY DANIEL MARINELLI

La Quinta Blackhawks celebrate with the Victory Flag. (Photo by Dan Marinelli)

PALM DESERT – In 2014, the Desert Valley League shifted rivalry week from the last game of the season to the conference opener. In last Friday’s battle for the Victory Flag, however, the La Quinta Blackhawks played like they had a whole seasonsworth of preparation in a 49-14 route of the rival Palm Desert Aztecs. Still reeling from losing a plethora of key players to graduation, the 2014 Aztecs (0-1 in DVL, 0-5 Overall) have failed to resemble even a shell of the team that shared a portion of the 2013 DVL www.desertstarweekly.com

title. On the other hand, the Blackhawks (1-0 in DVL, 4-1 Overall) continue to look like one of the best teams in Southern California, making a serious statement in front of a raucous crowd of thousands at Palm Desert High School. “The players are out there doing a good job, but tonight I think we were a little sloppy at times,” Blackhawks head coach Dan Armstrong said. “We’ve had a running clock in our last four of our last five games, so I guess were doing something right.” On Friday, it appeared as if

Coach Armstrong’s team was doing everything right. With three rushing touchdowns from the speedy tailback Chris “Turbo” Toribio in the first quarter, the Blackhawks were running away with the game, the flag and the bragging rights for the ninth straight year. At 21-0 heading into the second quarter, the game was nowhere near over but the Aztecs would need to step up its defense that was mathematically set to allow 82 points by the end of the game. in the second quarter but the Blackhawks quarterback Michael Avina came alive in the final three minutes of the half. On fourth down, Avina miraculously escaped a sack and tossed a 33-yard pass to Makua Camarao. The ball was spotted at the Aztecs’ oneyard line and Avina ran in the touchdown to extend the lead to a lopsided 28. The Aztecs did show signs of life in the first half, answering with a 22-yard, Derek Anderson touchdown reception. The Aztecs touchdown was all for naught after Avina launched a 28-yard pass to Sam Gomez, scoring a momentum-grasping touchdown with one tick left in the first half. With the score 35-7 to open the second half, all the disconsolate Aztecs could hope for was a show of effort and competitiveness. Yet, on the Blackhawks opening possession of the third quarter, Toribio left his final mark on the game with a 30-yard sprint for the end zone. As if 42-7 was not bad enough, Justin Anderson returned a Palm Desert punt 51-yards for the touchdown, which put the Blackhawks up an insurmountable 49-7 in the third quarter. To mop up the score, Trevor Hughes scored one final touchdown, bringing the Aztecs total to 14. “We tried to throw too much tonight – we probably should’ve run a little more than we did,” Coach Armstrong said.

“We want to start getting Eric Pascacio some more carries. You saw a few glimpses of him; he’s pretty special. He’s got a calf issue so were just letting him play corner but hopefully as the season wears on, we can get him in more.” Despite his ailment, Pascacio finished with an impressive 75 yards on just three rushes. Along with his 190 yards rushing, Toribio added four more touchdowns, bringing his season total to 18. To go with his two touchdowns (rushing and passing), Avina finished with 144 passing yards. “It doesn’t matter, as you saw. It’s Palm Desert – it’s a great rivalry game.” Coach Armstrong said about rescheduling the rivalry game to the DVL opener. “I like the idea that we’ll have a bye before playoffs. Now I know they are looking toward the next big hurdle on our schedule is a rematch with Cathedral City after last year.” Before the Armstong’s team can travel to Cathedral City, they should not over look their next opponent. This Friday, the Blackhawks welcome the struggling Indio High School Rajas to La Quinta High School. Game starts at 7 pm. Palm Desert has a bye and will not play until Oct. 10 against Indio.
