Geffen Playhouse offers Intellectual Comedy Satire Play on three of History’s Greatest Thinker/Writers

In the Geffen Playhouse’s current production “The Gospel According to Thomas Jefferson, Charles Dickens, and Count Leo

Tolstoy: Discord”, written by Scott Carter and directed by Matt August, three of history’s great thinker/writers come together in a blisteringly funny battle of wits to explain their divergently held opinions.

Playwright Carter said that the story had been incubating in his mind for over two decades.

He just needed an Epiphany to

bring clarity and the direction needed to turn his thoughts into a theatrical script. With the help of friend and director Matt August, the property has been turned into a clever amalgamation of theories, ideas and opinions, some of which, reveal the private thoughts and lives of Carter’s three characters: Thomas Jefferson, Charles

Story and Photos by Pat Krause Women Leaders Forum held an enlightening luncheon at the Hyatt Regency Hotel on October 16th with the focus on Breast Cancer. Early detection is the key to finding breast cancer. You know your body more than than anyone else. Even to a greater degree than your doctor as he is not around you 24/7. Your family history is very important in finding out your risks for Breast and other cancers. The survival rate today is over 80% for breast cancer and can go even higher with the new treatments and early detection.

You are in command of your own body, so there are things you can do to stop your chances of getting cancer. Exercise, not smoking, drinking alcohol and knowing what you eat. Obesity is a big factor in getting cancer and obesity in our school children is staggering. Teaching our children healthy eating habits and exercise must start at an early age to combat obesity. Starting in the grade schools will hopefully change behaviors in all these areas.

Our Desert Valley is rich in opportunities. We have extreme highs and low with our mountains and below sea level Salton Sea. We have highs and low economically and issues in health. The Desert Health District partners with Women Leaders Forum, health and education facilities to address these issues. The district has provided monies to help them with these problems.

The District provides breast cancer screenings, and cancer education along with 52 miles of walking and biking trails.

Speakers included Dr. Sonja Fung, Pattie Daly-Caruso and Kathleen “Sunshine” O’Brien.

O’Brien spoke about how she and her 2 other sisters all got breast cancer within one year.

She spoke about how they coped and what they are doing now in the fight against breast cancer. Women attending were asked to decorate a bra to donate or keep for themselves.

Tables were filled with paints and fancy sequins for adornment.

Then quickly realizes he is a prisoner of sorts but doesn’t understand why, and then becomes the narrator, tour guide, and the man of reason during this 85 minute adventure in words and ideas.

When the door opens a

second time Charles Dickens (David Melville), the 18th century novelist and wordsmith walks in and quickly comes to the party as Jefferson explains we’re here to be judged by some tribunal of sorts.

Dickens in full theatrical delivery flamboyantly demands to be allowed to leave. When nothing happens the 17th century sits down with the 18th century and both wait for the 20th century figure to arrive. When the door opens Count Leo Tolstoy (Armin Shimerman) enters complaining in full-throated, heavily accented Russian, his

With all three participants present and introduced, the trio for the evening’s entertainment agree to defend their divergent opinions.

The discourse or “discord” as the title implies, is spirited and heated at times as each tries to convince other of the error of his position. What these three historical figures do have in common, however, is that each has written his own version of the Bible by which to believe and to live his life.

It should come as no surprise to learn that all three historical figures in real life didn’t follow their own advice during their lifetimes.

P l a y w r i g h t C a r t e r ’s premise is rich in promise and entertainment value, however lurking just beneath the surface of the narrative text is a touch of the didactic approach as a way of engaging and imparting the information necessary to enjoy the splendid performances of Cedar, Melville, and Shimerman.

Nevertheless, the audience can still come away with a stimulating evening of comedy and satire in the theatre, thanks to director August and his creative team led by scenic designer Takeshi Kata whose stark, spare hospitallike operating theatre room, sans the medical trappings, is visually arresting, and sets the

tone for what is to follow. The lights by designer Luke Moyer, complement the costumes designed by Ann Closs-Farely, along with projections by designer Jeffrey Elias Teeter, and sound support by designer Cricket S. Myers, make for a seamless production.

Ambiguous endings from playwrights and screenwriters are all the rage these days.

So it’s okay to dream up your own ending. Whether you do or don’t, you’ll still enjoy this production.

percent interest rates in place for an infinite amount of time.

QE cannot solve our economic malaise. It definitely helped us out of the 2008 crisis. It has certainly given the stock market an unprecedented boost over the past six years.

But it’s not going to jump start the economy.

These “experts” talking about the Fed doing more for longer or starting a new round of QE only points out they truly don’t understand economic policy. They are simply trying to get another boost to their stock portfolios.

The Fed must start raising rates so they will have the power to impact a future recession or something worse.

The economy needs an influx of capital. Have you tried to obtain a new loan lately? I’ve had so many clients have to jump through ridiculous hoops lately to obtain a loan. In a few cases, the bank’s demands were so unreasonable that we either walked away or the clients paid cash.

As we pointed out last week, US banks are sitting on record reserves of nearly $3 trillion. We don’t want them to put all that money back into the economy but if they would release the majority of excess

seen this problem and has said they could start to assess negative interest rates to banks that stockpile cash above required minimum reserves.

At the same time, lending requirements need to be lowered so more people will qualify for loans. We don’t need to ever go back to the “if you can fog a mirror” you can get a loan mentality. But lending standards do need to revert to something more reasonable.

We like the financial sector in the future because we believe

interest rates will be higher and that will incentivize banks to make more loans because they will be more profitable. That will get money into the system. So interest rates must start a slow climb upwards. And banks can no longer be rewarded for inactivity.

CCAL Since the assessment collection procedures were changed by the legislature in 2005, many have questioned whether associations were required to accept partial payments from delinquent members. Most associations and their law firms contended that unless the board and homeowner agreed upon a payment plan, the association could refuse anything less than full payment.

That question was resolved by the appellate court opinion in Huntington Continental Townhomes Association v.

Miner, issued October 14, 2014.

In that case, homeowner Miner fell behind in his assessments and the association sued, asking for the court to foreclose upon the home. After the lawsuit was filed, Miner and the Association

agreed on a payment plan.

However, Miner defaulted on the payment plan, and later sent a $3,500 check to the association. The payment was about $2,100 short of the full balance, and the association refused the check and proceeded to obtain a judgment against Miner.

The appellate court ruled that the Davis-Stirling Act does not allow associations to refuse partial payments, and that if a homeowner pays enough to reduce the balance below $1,800 or one year (of principal), the association’s foreclosure activity must cease. The court pointed out the lien still remains in force, but that foreclosure activity on the lien must cease.

The court noted that even if a homeowner stops foreclosure in this fashion, the association has options – it can proceed with a small claims court action for the funds (small claims court cannot award foreclosure, only money), can pursue a money damages claim in Superior Court, or can wait until the principal balance again reaches one year or $1,800 delinquency and resume foreclosure.

The court’s opinion, interestingly, acknowledges that some delinquent owners may use this ruling to stall foreclosure by paying just enough to keep the principal balance October 22, 2014

below the threshold, but that “the Legislature engaged in a balancing process and chose to accept that risk in order to protect owners from foreclosure and the loss of equity in their homes..”

The upshot of the ruling is simple for California associations – if a delinquent homeowner offers money, take it. Credit it first to the principal balance (required under Civil Code Section 5655).

Associations pursuing nonjudicial foreclosure must stop that process if the resulting principal balance falls under the threshold. If an association is pursuing judicial foreclosure, the lawsuit can proceed but only for money damages, until the principal balance reaches the threshold.

Associations and delinquent members still should try their best to agree upon reasonable payment plans. Agreed payment plans cut off the hostility and the increasing cost of an ongoing collection process.

If a homeowner plays the partial payment game, trying to stave off foreclosure and to make the collection fees seem large compared to the principal balance, this tactic can be brought to the court’s attention to illustrate why the associations collection costs are reasonable.

it to their community to make sure everyone in the association pays their proper share of the community’s expenses. There is no reason to let this ruling deter that effort – ultimately the owner who plays games with delinquencies usually just increases their debt and problems.

Facing the Need for Assistance in Living

By Janice Gough For the past two weeks, I have written about the Terms one should understand when buy a Long-Term Care plan and Alternative solutions to buying a L.T.C. plan.

This week I will explore the reasons, which you should consider preparing for the road ahead.

Those ages 65 or older are the fastest-growing sector of our

population. According to Senator Tom Daschle, Seventy per-cent of this sector will have a need for Assistance before death.

Considering that statistic, Forty million people will need care soon.

If we do not address this reality now, our children or loved ones will definitely have to deal with it later. We must ask ourselves how much we love those who will be left in the position of managing our care.

If we do nothing to prepare, we force our loved ones to put their lives on hold. To soften the blow of managing our care, planning is crucial. Most family caretakers are left clueless until that day arrives.

They must first survey all assets; any insurance plans which may provide coverage and all other assets. Since Medicaid will not provide coverage unless you prove that non-exempt assets are not more than $2,000, we are left with deciding which assets will be liquidated first. Many begin with sale of higher ticket items,

such as cars. Reverse mortgages are considered as a solution, but will only work if you have enough equity in your home. Medicaid, by the way, is a reverse mortgage through the government, since a lien is placed on the home and the amount is recovered when the home is sold or on death of the owner. What loved ones and we must decide as far as liquidation of assets is one of the easier needs to be managed.

Taxation of sale of assets is a very important decision, in prioritizing which assets are liquidated first.

We must then assess what type of care will fit our budget and how long care may be needed.

Care is highly fragmented, and as a result available services and support are not coordinated.

Most patients do better living at their own homes; however, with the increased cost of care by a licensed practitioner who visits regularly; it can be the most expensive. A live- in care provider can be less, when free rent is offered as a part of their

pay. Most insured plans will only pay licensed providers. Dividing duties among our loved ones places a new burden on them.

There will always be those who will assume more responsibility than others. For any caregiver who does more than others, an additional compensation should be considered when possible.

Assisted-living homes will be less than a L.T.C. facility. The average cost of a L.T.C. facility averages $5,500 monthly. If a cognitive impairment exists, rates are much higher.

If you have an insured plan, counselors are provided free.

They will help provide a plan, stretch out the money supply, and aid in selecting the best options based on the patients likes and needs. Otherwise, it pays to hire a peer counselor to assist in developing a plan.

Additionally, they will save the family lots of time, because of their knowledge of what places are accessible and best suited for the patient needs, when care

can be attainable in that location, and the prices and any discounts ready for use. Their knowledge will be a valuable resource and will help resolve controversy and frustration with other family members.

From my last week’s article on Alternative Solutions to L.T.C., I received this question. “If I do not have the financial resources to purchase a plan, then how can I obtain coverage for an affordable basis?� Answer: We can roll over your 401K to an Equity Indexed Annuity and add a L.T.C. rider which will triple the payout of the account if care is needed.

How To Create A Master Mind As Learned by Art Kunkin The Life Extension Alchemist Napoleon Hill, the author of the self-help classic “Think And Grow Rich” is for me the great-grandfather of all selfhelp authors and his words are well worth careful study. I have known for many years that his Master Mind concept is at the heart of his teachings. Therefore, for the benefit of my readers this week, I reproduce in this column a few hundred of his actual impressive words about creating an effective Master Mind group and recommend the entire book.

Nevertheless, we sadly note that Hill does not include a single woman in his Master Mind and must condemn him for that act of prejudice. Even so, with that omission noted, Hill offered us a great technique for personal development.

“Long before I had ever written a line for publication or endeavored to deliver a speech in public, I followed the habit of shaping my own character by trying to imitate the nine men whose lives and lifeworks had been the most impressive to me.

These nine men were Emerson, Paine, Edison, Darwin, Lincoln, Burbank, Napoleon, Ford and

Carnegie. Every night, over a long period of years, I held an imaginary council meeting with this group whom I called my ‘invisible counselors.

“The procedure was this, Just before going to sleep at night, I would shut my eyes and see, in my imagination, this group of men seated with me around my council table. Here I had not only an opportunity to sit among those whom I considered to be great, but I actually dominated the group by serving as its chairman.

“I had a very definite purpose in indulging my imagination through these nightly meetings.

My purpose was to rebuild my own character so it would represent a composite of the characters of my imaginary counselors. Realizing, as I did early in life, that I had to overcome the handicap of birth in an environment of ignorance and superstition, I deliberately assigned myself the task of voluntary rebirth through the method I have described above.

“A Time for Self-Suggestion” I knew, of course, that all men have become what they are because of their dominating thoughts and desires. I knew that every deeply seated desire has the effect of causing one to seek outward expression through which that desire may be transmuted into reality. I knew that self-suggestion is a powerful factor in building character, that it is, in fact, the sole principle through which character is built.

“With this knowledge of the principles of mind operation, I was fairly well armed with the

equipment needed in rebuilding my character, In these imaginary council meetings I called on my cabinet members for the knowledge I wished each to contribute, addressing myself to each member in audible words, as follows: “Mr. Emerson, I desire to acquire from you the marvelous understanding of nature, which distinguished your life. I ask that you make an impress upon my subs conscious mind of whatever qualities you possessed, which enabled you to understand and adapt yourself to the laws of nature.

“Mr. Burbank, I request that you pass on to me the knowledge which enabled you to harmonize the laws of nature that you caused the cactus to shed its thorns and to become an edible food. Give me access to the knowledge which enabled you to make two blades of grass grow where but one grew before.

“Mr. Paine, I desire to acquire from you the freedom of thought and the courage and clarity with which to express convictions, which so distinguish you.

“Mr. Darwin, I wish to acquire from you the marvelous patience and ability to study cause and effect without bias or prejudice, so exemplified by you in the field of natural science.

“Mr. Lincoln, I desire to build into my own character the keen sense of justice, the untiring spirit of patience, the sense of humor, the human understanding, and the tolerance which was your distinguishing characteristics.

“Mr. Carnegie, I wish to acquire a thorough understanding of the principles of organized effort, which you used so effectively in the building of a great industrial enterprise.

“Mr. Ford, I wish to acquire your spirit of persistence, the determination, poise, and selfconfidence, which have enabled you to master poverty, and to organize, unify, and simplify a human effort, so I may help others to follow in your footsteps.

“Mr. Edison, I wish to acquire from you the marvelous spirit of faith with which you have uncovered so many of nature’s secrets, the spirit of unremitting toils with which you have so often wrested victory from defeat.”

1. Where did the Jimi Hendrix Experience Tour begin?

He said, “ It started in Florida and Today: We have 10 Days Left.”

2. How did you get started playing the guitar?

He said,” Playing music with my brother, practicing all day long, Practicing keeps yourself together.” I mentioned from growing up in the Blues World. I would hear my father Roy Gaines say a few musicians don’t like to practice. Eric said,” You can make practicing music fun by playing music that you love instead of playing scales.”

3. How many songs do you perform on the Jimi Hendrix Experience Tour nightly?

He said,” I come out on stage at the first end of half of the show. I perform 4 songs.”

What message can you say to our children that are not playing the Blues?

He said,” That it is important that Blues goes forward. That type of style changes, and kids should study people that introduced Blues. When kids of today study Blues this can help them make new and different music to do whatever you want to do by pulling from the genius.’’

8. What message can you send to Jimi Hendrix’s Experience Fans and to his sister named Janie Hendrix?

He said,” The tour is exciting and there’re a lot of people watching and attending the Jimi Hendrix Experience Tour. That it’s a huge powwow for all the Blues and Rock n’ Roll skillfully talented entertainer

Second Case of Enterovirus in Riverside County

By KMIR News Staff Riverside County health officials today were investigating the second local case of the potentially deadly enterovirus D68, which left a child hospitalized.

of details,’’ according to county Department of Public Health Infectious Diseases Specialist Barbara Cole “A child under 12 years old was treated at a hospital. We’re trying to ascertain that child’s status.’’

Last week, the county

confirmed its first enterovirus D68 infection this year.

“The illness has affected many portions of the country and state, including Southern California, so its arrival in Riverside County is not a surprise,’’ said Public Health Officer Dr. Cameron Kaiser.

The teenager was responding to treatment and recovering at home, Kaiser said.

According to Cole, in the last decade, there have been no documented enterovirus cases in the county.

The California Department of Public Health reported 32 confirmed infections statewide, with the highest number -- eight -- in San Diego County.

According to state health officials, the number of patients testing positive for respiratory illness is within the normal range for this time of year.

Enterovirus is marked by acute respiratory distress and is spread as a result of contact with the germs of an infected person, including through sneezing, coughing and touching, health officials said.

Parents were advised to be alert to signs of a child having difficulty catching his or her breath in severe cases.

Mild symptoms can include coughing, sneezing and a runny nose, similar to the flu.

Asthmatics are at greatest risk.

A 4-year-old boy from Hamilton, New Jersey, died Sept.

25 from complications related to enterovirus D68, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. There

have also been three adult viral deaths linked to the strain.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the virus was first identified in California in 1962.

“This year the number of people reported with confirmed D68 infection is much greater than that reported in previous years,’’ according to a CDC statement.

From mid-August to today, the CDC said there had been 691 confirmed cases in 46 states.

Health officials recommend the following actions to fend off the virus: • Thorough hand-washing with soap and water, especially after changing a diaper; • Avoid touching the eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands; • Avoid kissing, hugging or sharing cups and utensils with individuals who appear ill; and • Routinely disinfect surfaces in a living space, particularly when there’s an ill member of the household.

‘Million-Dollar Dollar Arm,’ ‘Maleficent’ and ‘Fire & Rescue’ You don’t have to be a baseball fan to enjoy the inspiring, heart-warming story of two young boys from India, who win a “Million-Dollar Arm” competition in Disney’s “MillionDollar Arm” now available on Blu-ray and DVD. Based on a true story, the film deals with hopes, dreams, self-discovery, second chances and personal triumph over adversity.

Jon Hamm (TVs “Mad Men”) stars as JB Bernstein, a sports agent who is now in business for himself. Things haven’t gone as planned, and at this point in his career, he needs a winner in order to remain financially stable. In a desperate effort to find the Major League’s next great pitcher he heads off to India where he plans to discover a fast throwing Indian cricket player who can transfer his pitching skills to tossing a baseball. Eventually, two young men prove to be potential winners, but while they can throw a mean fast ball they know absolutely nothing about the game of baseball.

Actors Suraj Sharma and Madhur Mittal play Rinku and Dinesh who have strong throwing arms, but their pitches often go wild. Undaunted, Bernstein is certain he can whip them into shape before draft choices are made. In his efforts to turn these naive young boys into hot baseball pitchers, he hires a well-respected coach played by Bill Paxton. Paxton sees the potential in the young men, but doubts he can have them ready in one year as required by Bernstein.

JB, a no-nonsense kind of a guy, expects others to get

the kids into shape, while he hustles. This backfires because Dinesh and Rinku need a firm hand and a mentor who will be like a father figure for them. Alone in a strange new country they need guidance and a feeling of family. They are homesick and also have a language barrier to overcome since they don’t speak English well. Soon their high hopes turn to despair.

The story, while often funny, is also inspiring and romantic.

Over time, JB learns about commitment as he begins to interact more with Dinesh, Rinku and with his lady tenant who may be more right for him than the bevy of models he has been dating. The film is rated PG for mild language and some suggestive content.

Bonus materials include “Training Camp,” a feature describing how the young Indian actors Suraj Sharma and Madhur Mittal face the same daunting challenges their characters Rinku and Dinesh did in the film—learning how to pitch a baseball at high speed. “Their Story” is about the real JB Bernstein, Rinku and Dinesh and The MillionDollar Arm Contest’s impact on the aspirations of children in India. Business to Consumer Expo a Success The 2014 Business to Consumer Expo held recently at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino was a huge success for all who exhibited and attended. The show boasted car displays from Torre Nissan and Coachella Valley GMC Buick, as well as a Viper from Premier Sponsor Costco Palm Desert. On the showroom floor were 109 exhibitors along with 12 food exhibitors who treated all in attendance with samples.

Approximately 3000 residents, employees, business owners, and visitors explored the show, met exhibitors, saw what local businesses were up to, and met each other in the Business Expo Lounge area. The Business Expo has been a great kick off to the season here in the Coachella Valley, thanks to the many exhibitors and sponsors.

Palm Springs Expo A Big Success The Palm Springs Chamber of Commerce held its annual Business Expo & Taste of Palm Springs on Tuesday, Sept. 30 at the historic Colony 29 Palm Springs, which began in the 1920s as an artists’ colony and was restored to its original detailing in recent years for use as an upscale vacation rental and event venue.

An estimated 3800 visitors attended the event, from late afternoon through the evening. More than 20 area restaurants offered “tastes” of their menus; more than 60 businesses from around Southern California created informational booths; 20 classic and exotic cars were on display; a live radio station broadcast, live band, and DJ entertained as guests strolled the seven acres sipping wine and beer from the Beer and Wine Gardens.

Long Beach Man Charged in Student’s Murder

By Angela Monroe PALM DESERT -- A Long Beach man is facing murder charges tonight in the death of a missing Cal State Northridge student.

23-year-old Abdullah Alkadi was a student from Saudi Arabia, studying electrical engineering at Cal-State Northridge.

His body was found along Interstate 10, east of Cook Street, just before midnight on Thursday.

Alkadi was last seen on September 17th at his home in Northridge.

His cellphone was last traced to a location in Beaumont,

but then de-activated.

Alkadi disappeared while showing a vehicle he posted for sale on Craigslist.

Police arrested two men in connection with the student’s death on Thursday, but Monday the district attorney opted to charge only one.

The district attorney’s office charged 28-year-old Agustin Fernandez with murder, and said he used a knife to carry out the crime.

Fernandez is also charged with robbery and carjacking.

The chief of police said in a press conference Monday that Fernandez killed Alkadi to keep

both the vehicle and money.

Police say Fernandez dumped Alkadi’s body along Interstate 10.

Police used statements from Fernandez to find Alkadi’s body in Palm Desert.

Investigators said they spoke with Fernandez early on in the investigation, but did not arrest him until much later.

Prosecutors will decide later whether to seek the death penalty against Fernandez.

Coachella Valley Career Fair In Indio

By Desert Star Weekly INDIO – More than 2,500 high-school students attended a college and career fair in Indio to help plan for their futures beyond high school, including 110 students from Blythe, who attended for the first time.

“It was an amazing experience, and I learned of so many opportunities that I didn’t know existed,” said Alana Soria, a senior at Palo Verde High School.

“I’m glad I got the chance to go.”

The 29th Annual College VocTech Night had representatives from more than 80 four-year universities, community colleges, vocational-technical schools, the military, law enforcement and scholarship organizations. The event was held Oct. 15 in the Fullenwider Auditorium at the Riverside County Fairgrounds.

“Having sponsored this event at the county fairgrounds for many years, I knew it would be an incredible experience for Blythe’s students to be there, visit the booths and learn of financial aid and scholarship opportunities,” said Supervisor John J. Benoit. “I was very proud to make this opportunity attainable to them, and I definitely hope to build on this effort in the future.”

This year, Supervisor Benoit made bus rides on hand from Palo Verde High School in Blythe to Indio for the College Voc-Tech Night, including members of the supervisor’s Youth Advisory Council in Blythe.

The Reynaldo J. Carreon M.D. Foundation partnered with Supervisor Benoit’s office to contribute $500 for bus

transportation. Other partnering to Success and the Isabel organizations included the Rodriguez Scholarship.

S P O RT S Indians and Blackhawks Battle For First Place

LA QUINTA – Hype had been building around the Palm Springs High School Indians (2-1 in DVL, 5-2 Overall) matchup against the La Quinta High School Blackhawks (4-0 in DVL, 7-1 Overall) since the infant stages of the 2014 Desert Valley League season.

Thanks to the accuracy and poise of quarterback Will Olvera and a receiving core (Riley Hagar, Ray Mullen, Franklin Miller) that could be one of the best in the Southern Section, the Indians offense was running on all cylinders and ready to contend with last year’s champs.

Additionally, the defense as a whole is step up from last year.

Through the first six games, the Indians defense had only allowed 9.2 points a game.

When both teams took the field at La Quinta High School, however, the Blackhawks appeared to be the only team ready from the start. Stud running back Chris “Turbo” Toribio and quarterback Micheal Avina each ran in a touchdown to put La Quinta up 14-0 early in the first quarter. The Indians showed up to the pivotal game with a little less than two minutes left in the first quarter. Ray Mullen caught a 12-yard pass from Olvera to bring the Indians to within seven.

Palm Springs’ defense prevented the Blackhawks from getting open and thrown to all night, largely due to the fact that stars Hagar and Miller play are a part of the secondary. Yet, in the second quarter both defenses tightened up and did not allow any touchdowns.

“We wanted to throw a little more from Avina but our receivers couldn’t get off the ball,” Blackhawks head coach Dan Armstrong said. “He couldn’t do anything, it wasn’t his fault. I’m sure down the road were going to see some teams

that (press our receivers well).

We got to get better at some things and be more physical.”

The score would have stayed the same going into halftime but mid way through the second quarter, an uncharacteristic Toribio fumble led to a Palm Springs field goal. Olvera’s offense had been gaining momentum, 10 unanswered points since the two Blackhawks touchdowns at the start of the game. In the Indians final possession of the half, La Quinta blocked a field goal that snatched all of the momentum.

Just four points separated the two teams, 14-10; it was anybody’s game with just 30 minutes of hard-nosed football left to decide first and second place. The Indians were the first team to strike in the third on a 16-yard Franklin Miller catch and dive for the pylon. Palm Springs had finally taken the lead and appeared ready win at La Quinta High School – where the Blackhawks have not lost to a DVL opponent since 2011 against the Indians.

In the 2014 season, the Blackhawks have lived on the big play. Palm Springs did its best to limit La Quinta’s playmakers but with 4:11 left in the third quarter, the Indians defense let up for one play and Toribio took advantage. Turbo took the ball 80 yards for a touchdown that electrified the packed, raucous crowd. With a little more than a quarter left to play, the Indians were only down 21-17 and not prepared to give up first place in the DVL without a fight.

Concluding the opening drive of the fourth quarter, Toribio ran in his third touchdown of the game. The Blackhawks were up 28-17, but knowing time was becoming a factor, Palm Springs quickly got to work. In a little over two minutes, Olvera marched

down the field and tossed a twoyard dump to Noah McGuire for the touchdown. After a failed two-point attempt, the Indians only trailed 28-23.

With six minutes left in the game, there was enough time for Palm Springs to kick it away and try to stop the La Quinta offense. In one set of downs, Palm Springs forced a punt and had one final drive to win the game with 2:48 left to play. Except there was no epic comeback, Olvera threw an untimely interception that Bryan Mello returned 29 yards for a touchdown.

Down 34-23, with two and a half minutes left, Olvera drove 80 yards, finishing with a touchdown pass to Riley Hagar.

After another unsuccessful attempt at two points, the Indians trailed 34-29 and were, surprisingly, an onside kick and a touchdown away from a stunning upset. The ball did not bounce the Indians’ way and La

Quinta ended up running out the clock in the victory formation.

“They did a great job, they had a great game plan and they got rid of the ball quick because I think they knew we would be putting pressure on them, Coach Armstrong said. “We hit their quarterback a couple of times, dinged him up and he kept coming back in and kept delivering the football so I got nothing but praise for them, their a very good football team.”

With the win, the La Quinta reclaims the Mike Gates Trophy.

The game is in honor of Mike Gates who taught at both schools and died of cancer in 2011. Additionally, the win puts Coach Armstrong’s undefeated Blackhawks in the driver’s seat.

With only two games left against the lowly Coachella Valley Arabs and the Xavier Prep Saints, the Blackhawks will likely end the season undefeated and claim the first playoff seed out of the DVL.

“It was huge, Coach Armstrong said. “We’re the only undefeated team in the league now, we got our fate in our hands and one of our goals every year is to win the league.

Also, CIF so were sitting number two in the polls and if we can win out we’ll have a good draw in CIF and we’ll have a home game. So this was big.”

The Blackhawks play at Coachella Valley High School on Thursday. The Indians welcome the Palm Desert Aztecs to Palm Springs High School on Friday.

Both games start at 7 pm.

Nearly 2,000 people are set to participate.

That beats last year’s record of 1700.

It all benefits United Way of the Desert on the 24th annual Make a Difference Day on October 25th.

The Tram Road Challenge pushes you, encourages you to go that extra mile and gives you the sweet taste of success as you cross that finish line.

“This is such a big deal for me, in the past year I lost over

one hundred pounds. So this for me, I’m about to cry, it’s a big deal because I would have never thought I could even think of doing this,” said Donna Palivos, a Tram Road Challenge participant.

Donna is doing the Tram Road Challenge this year along with about 2,000 others.

We’re taking the challenge on Make a Difference Day -- all benefiting United Way of the Desert.

“We believe that everybody in the Coachella Valley deserves a great quality of life and we do that through education, income stability and health, so to promote healthy habits and lifestyles, this is the perfect partnership with the

Palm Springs Aerial Tram Road Challenge,” said Kristal Granados, executive director of United Way of the Desert.

United Way of the Desert wants to break the cycle of poverty in the Coachella Valley.

“100% of the funds that are raised by United Way of the Desert, or that we’re the beneficiary of stay in the Coachella Valley to help our residents and to help our families,” said Granados.

So we’ve been preparing -stretching, walking and running to get ready for the challenge.

Nine cities in nine weeks: Desert Hot Springs, Palm Desert, Indio, Indian Wells, Palm Springs, La Quinta, Coachella, Cathedral

City and Rancho Mirage.

Each walk helped a different charity.

“It’s a great way to get all the cities involved with one another get awareness to the different organizations and the United Way,” said Cindy Burreson with Shelter from the Storm.

The challenge benefits each person, and the entire Coachella Valley -- which you’ll have a great view of as you reach new heights.

It’s a 2,200 foot vertical climb in 3.7 miles.

“There’s an excitement, it’s in the air, you can cut it with a knife and it’s so amazing to see just how excited everyone is to get healthy, fight obesity, make a

difference in the Coachella Valley,” said Granados.

Ernest Thompson’s “On Golden Pond” Charms Again

By Jack Lyons Theatre & Film Critic It’s always a pleasure to see an old friend. “On Golden Pond”, written by Ernest Thompson is a heart-warming comedy and certainly qualifies as an old acquaintance, if not a friend, whom I’ve enjoyed seeing many times over the years both as a play and a movie.

Besides, what’s not to like?

The play was a Tony Nominee and a New York Drama Desk award winner in 1997. It’s been performed all over the world.

Now the time has come for it to be performed on the stage of the West Valley Playhouse, in Canoga Park (a section of Los Angeles’ San Fernando Valley), a long-time Member of LA Theatre Alliance and Valley Theatre League.

The story unless you’ve been living in a cave over the years is well known. In short, it’s a tale that focuses on aging couple Ethel Thayer (Esther Rosen) and Norman Thayer (Paul Michael Nieman), who spend each summer at their get-away-home on a lake called Golden Pond. During the year the story takes place, they are visited by daughter Chelsea (Heather Smith) with her fiancé - later as her husband - Bill Ray

(Keith Lewis) and his son Billy, Jr. (Dorion Wilson, the night I attended).

The poignant drama explores the often stormy and prickly relationship Chelsea (Norman and Ethel’s only child), shared with her grumpy and curmudgeonly father growing up, and the difficulties faced by her aging parents in the twilight years of their marriage. The play made into a movie in 1981 had a cast that starred Henry Fonda and real-life daughter Jane Fonda; one of America’s acting family royalty, with the great Katherine Hepburn thrown in for good measure, as Ethel.

Playhouse Artistic Director and Producer Jon Berry, is favorably blessed with a wonderful cast that convincingly transports the California audience to the cool and inviting woods of Maine – haunting loon calls and all.

Starring as Ethel, is Los Angeles actor Esther Rosen, who brings a fifty-year wealth of acting and directing experience to her performance. One can really feel her love for both Norman and Chelsea. She is a worthy facilitator and negotiator between her stubborn daughter and her even more stubborn

husband, who would like to extend his love to Chelsea but can’t quite bring himself to do so. Chelsea too, would like to be accepted by Norman but the distance between them is very wide, however, baby-steps toward closing that gap begin to appear on the horizon in the form of Bill, Sr. and his son Billy.

Starring as Norman is actor-singer and Pierce College administrator Paul Michael Nieman. Nieman and Rosen were last paired as Tevye and Golde in the playhouse’s production of “Fiddler on the Roof” seen last season. Nieman nicely captures the gruffness and whimsical sense of humor of crusty old Norman; turning him into a likable “old poop”, in spite of himself.

Keith Lewis as Bill, Sr. although briefly on stage, makes the most of it in his scenes with Norman, becoming one of the comedy’s funnier moments in Thompson’s play about family relationships. Lovely Heather Smith with a 1 million watt smile, but a troubled heart over the distance between her father and herself turns in a finely judged performance as she neatly juggles her character’s mixed emotions. Young Billy,

Jr. portrayed by Dorion Wilson, is a real find when it comes to youngsters that can act, take direction, and deliver a believable performance. He has a future in the “business” if he chooses to pursue a career as an actor. Frank Dooley as Charley “Macanolly” Martin, the local postman and family friend, turns in a little gem of a performance in his brief onstage appearances.

Designer Charles Hall provide a woodsy Maine cabin with enough space for the actors to perform their magic and the lights designed by Danny Truxaw paint Hall’s stage with lighting that allow the costumes designed by Don Nelson to be seen and appreciated.
