Desert Aids Walk Ann Sheffer, Geoff Kors, James Williamson, David Brinkman, Christy Holstege. Photo by Pat Krause Story and Photos by Pat Krause The annual Desert AIDS Walk was held on October 19th. The event started at Ruth Hardy Park in Palm Springs. Over 2000 people gathered to make a 3.5-mile round trip walk. The theme this year was “Walk a Day in Our Shoes.” This is an enjoyable walk where

they start with entertainment, speeches, and many vendor booths. Registration started early in the morning at 7:00 as walkers were urged to come to explore over 50 booths as it is a hectic morning before the walk begins. Bryan Gallo and Thalia Hayden were the hosts of the

stage. Next to take the stage was Desert AIDS Project CEO David Brinkman, who spoke about the many programs of DAP. Journalist Hank Plante was next on the scene, and he also led the walk. The large Palm Spring Gay Men’s Chorus sang for the vast crowd. For the last several years, the

walk has been started with a Yoga warm-up to get the muscles loosened up for the walk lead by Kristin Olson from Urban Yoga Center. Walkers returned after the walk for more as Bella Da Ball hosted the stage, and Probe 7 Band performed. They even held a “POSE” Dog Fashion

competition to round out the day. This is an exciting day for everyone, as there is more than just a walk for AIDS. Over 50 vendors took part to show health and wellness options in the Valley. Complimentary coffee and pastries were Continues on Page 2

Half the world’s banks are too weak to survive downturn – McKinsey By Desert Star Staff A new survey from consultancy McKinsey & Co has found that a majority of banks globally may not be economically viable because their returns on equity aren’t keeping pace with costs. The study looked at 1,000 banks in developed and emerging countries

and found that just over a third had made a return on capital of just 1.6 percent over the past three years. This compares to returns of just over 17 percent for top banks over the same period. “Nearly 35 percent of banks globally are both sub-scale and suffer from operating in unfavorable

markets”, as well as having flawed business models, said McKinsey. It added that “to survive a downturn, merging with similar banks may be the only option, if a full reinvention is not feasible.” According to the report, banks are not as wellprepared for a downturn as

they were when the global financial crisis erupted in 2007 in terms of profitability. “While the jury is still out on whether the current market uncertainty will result in an imminent recession or a prolonged period of slow growth, the fact is that growth has slowed,” McKinsey said. “This is likely the last

pit stop in this cycle for banks to rapidly reinvent business models and scale up via acquisitions,” the consulting firm said, adding: “The time for bold and critical moves is now.”

Developing a Planning Mindset

By Janice Gough Younger Generations Have little Faith in Social Security. To help the youth of TodayToday, who do not believe that Social Security will be there for them, we must teach them how to avoid the mistakes made in the past about saving for retirement, the most valuable trait they should be prepared is to develop a planning Mindset. It involves setting long-term financial goals and working diligently to achieving them by starting to save for retirement early and develop a lifetime financial plan. understand the psychology of spending and how to avoid emotional spending. I encourage younger clients to start by looking at the “Big Picture” of how we spend our lifetime income… and by examining the average expenditures, they come to realize that by cutting taxes and money paid on interest and avoid frivolous spending, we can design a plan which aligns us of how to live debt-free. Financial Freedom will overcome many of the problems that families have TodayToday. How one manages their portfolio to stay out of Debt struggles, will determine the lifestyle ahead. In Today’sToday’s world, we are challenged to spend at every turn we meet. We have become victims of being preyed upon regularly, to buy, buy, buy. Both younger generations, along with even younger Gen Z, anticipate that 401(k) or IRA assets will be their primary funding source in retirement, contributing around 40% or 45%. But the ability of all three groups to save for retirement will be hampered by the amount of debt they hold. Sixty-seven percent of workers paying student loans, say, this burden is an obstacle to saving for retirement, and 31% of millennials, along with about 25% of Generation X and Generation Z members say they have an “unmanageable” amount of debt. We must

teach our children how to manage their money and determine what type of return they will get from spending and investing. (Risk VS. Reward!) What these and all other workers need is a “planning mindset” to save enough for retirement. Parents must emphasize the importance of Financial Peace of Mind, to help their children’s future. Only 35% of workers have adopted a planning mindset, but those who have are nearly twice as confident they will ultimately save enough for retirement, 2.5 times more likely to have a strong sense of control over their debt situation and five times more likely to have a plan for handling the unexpected. There are emotional benefits as well to that way of thinking. People who have

adopted a planning mindset are happier than those who have not, more comfortable talking with a spouse about financial matters, and far less likely to be divorced. When people have a planning mindset, extraordinary things happen. They win more often! Baby boomers have tried to give their children what they did not have growing up. In doing so, we have created adults who feel a sense of entitlement when it comes to spending. Helping them to understand the benefits of Financial Freedom is the greatest gift we can give them. Although those retirees TodayToday feel more comfortable with their retirement, on the negative side, many workers expect to remain in debt throughout their lives: 52%

of millennials, 43% of Gen Xers, and 34% of boomers. Debt is a problem across all generations and a tough challenge. Many people are struggling with choosing between investing money or paying down debt, but it’s never too early to start saving for retirement. It’s a crucial issue for all generations, and eight out of 10 workers believe retirement policy should be a top priority for all presidential candidates. “Elevated Elements” Must Be Inspected Under New Law

By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL A balcony collapsed in Berkeley in 2015, causing six deaths and injuring seven. Consequently, Senate Bill (“SB”) 721 passed in 2018 and took effect in 2019, creating Health and Safety Code 17973. This law now requires inspection of elevated balconies, stairways, walkways, and other “exterior elevated elements” every six years. The new law exempts Davis-Stirling Act associations but applies to non-residential common interest developments. SB 326, introduced and passed this year, addresses Davis-Stirling Act common interest developments by adding a new Civil Code Section 5551 to take effect on January 1, 2020. HOAs must hire a licensed structural engineer or architect to perform a reasonably diligent visual inspection on a sample of exterior elevated elements. The first inspection must be completed by 2025 and repeated every nine years afterward. It applies to

balconies, walkways, and other above-ground elements attached to the buildings which are at least six feet above ground level and which the HOA are responsible for maintenance or repair. The law applies to multi-unit buildings consisting of at least 3 or more units and so would not apply to condominium projects consisting solely of detached single or duplex structures. The inspection is “visual,” meaning the inspector will not be required to dismantle the exterior elevated elements, but the inspector is required to generate a random list of locations to inspect prior to beginning. The inspector must generate a written report, and if the report indicates immediate threat to safety, the inspector must provide the report to the HOA immediately upon completion and to the building and safety department within 15 days. The HOA is then required to immediately take preventative measures and actions to keep persons away from the element until repairs have been accepted by the building and safety department. The report must list October 23, 2019

the type of components inspected; the waterproofing in place to protect them; their current condition; their expected future performance and remaining useful life; and recommendations for any necessary repairs or replacement. The reports from the inspections must be kept for “two inspection cycles,” meaning 18 years. Other than governing documents and minutes, this is now the longest recordkeeping requirement for HOAs. This new law is detailed, and all the details cannot be recited in the space of this column. Associations and their managers should check with legal counsel to make sure their inspection programs follow the applicable legal requirements. It remains to be seen how easy or difficult it will be to obtain these inspections. Since the issue is safety, will engineers or architects be able to obtain insurance for these reports, or will they insist that the HOAs indemnify them from any liability? Hopefully good inspectors will be available for this important work.

Since the inspections are visual only, this does not guarantee that a particular stairway, balcony, or walkway is safe, but only that obvious signs of weakness are not evident. Boards and managers should not be lulled into a false sense of security and keep up good routine maintenance including the waterproofing elements which protect elevated elements of the building. SB326 also contained provisions affecting HOA construction defect actions and will be addressed in a later column. ‘Not putting up with your Republican bulls**t!’

By Desert Star Staff Are last year’s ‘restaurant wars’ kicking off again? Senator Rand Paul (R-Kentucky) seems to think so, after he was confronted in a diner by

two elderly, outraged liberals. The Kentucky Republican was confronted by an elderly couple while dining in California on Friday. Paul’s spokesperson described the

pair as “aggressive lib[eral]s.” “You just ran into two people from New York, kiddo, and we’re not putting up with your Republican bullshit,” the woman says,

after flipping off the camera. In the background, her male partner can be heard saying “all right, we are Americans!” Paul posted a video of the incident, saying the public should decide who was really being rude even as the left blamed incivility on President Donald Trump. “This is why I cringe every time I see a New York license plate in Naples,” Florida talk radio host Neal Boortz tweeted in response. “This lady has issues,” another commenter wrote, “and they have nothing to do with Republicans.” While the outspoken diner duo might consider their behavior a sacred right guaranteed by the US Constitution’s First Amendment, the encounter brings to mind the confrontations that broke

By Desert Star Staff Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii) has accused Hillary Clinton of being behind a ‘concerted campaign’ to destroy her reputation and challenged her to stop hiding and enter the 2020 presidential race. “Great! Thank you Hillary Clinton,” Gabbard tweeted on Friday afternoon. “You, the queen of warmongers, embodiment of corruption, and personification of the rot that has sickened the Democratic Party for so long, have finally come out from behind the curtain.” “From the day I announced my candidacy, there has been a concerted campaign to destroy my reputation. We wondered who was behind it and why. Now we know — it was always you, through your proxies and powerful allies in

the corporate media and war machine,” Gabbard added. Clinton, who has blamed everyone from the FBI to Russia for her 2016 loss to Donald Trump, said in an interview on Thursday that “Russians” were “grooming” someone in the Democrat primary field to run as a thirdparty candidate. While not calling out Gabbard by name, her spokesperson later told CNN, “if the nesting doll fits,” leaving no room for doubt. Of all the candidates in the crowded Democrat primary field, Gabbard has been under the heaviest fire from journalists who previously boosted Clinton, accused of being an “Assad apologist” over a fact-finding trip she took to Syria years ago. Don’t cowardly hide behind your proxies. Join the race directly,” Gabbard

called out Clinton, who has dropped hints that she might run again in 2020 as a rematch for her 2016 humiliation. During the 2016 campaign, Gabbard resigned as vicechair of the Democratic

National Committee after endorsing Bernie Sanders for the party’s presidential nomination. Clinton beat Sanders out for the nomination largely due to support from the unaccountable

out in American restaurants last summer, following the call by Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-California) to “push back” against Trump administration officials in public, and the exhortation from Senator Cory Booker (D-New Jersey) for his supporters to “get up in the face of congresspeople.” Paul himself – a libertarianleaning Republican who has supported Trump on foreign policy though not on all domestic initiatives – was confronted in an airport last summer, and physically attacked in 2017 by a neighbor. Though the attacker was a liberal, the assault was officially explained as a “landscaping dispute” with the Kentucky lawmaker and not classified as political violence.

“superdelegates,” and it emerged later that her campaign had taken over the DNC entirely – which might help explain Gabbard’s line about “the rot that has sickened the Democratic Party for so long.”

Acting BLM Director’s Views on Public Lands Causing Alarm

By Desert Star Staff BOISE, Idaho – Concerns are swirling around William Perry Pendley’s role as acting director of the Bureau of Land Management. Pendley is under fire for advocating the federal sell-off of public lands, as recently as in a 2016 opinion article – and his part in the land-seizure movement. Maggie Heumann is an Idaho ambassador for Artemis, an initiative to promote women as hunters, anglers and conservationists. Considering Pendley is in charge of one-third of the country’s public lands, Heumann sees him as a threat to the western way of life. “You’ve heard a lot of analogies about it, but the best

4

DesertSTAR

one that I can think of is, ‘Yogi’s in charge of the picnic basket right now,’” she states. “We basically have put a person in charge of a public lands entity that is completely against everything that it’s about, and it’s a huge conflict of interest.” Pendley has been the temporary BLM director since August and has yet to go before the Senate to be confirmed for the position, raising legal questions about his role. In his defense at an environmental journalism conference this month, Pendley said his personal views are “irrelevant” and that he serves the president and his boss, Interior Secretary David Bernhardt, a former oil and gas lobbyist.

Heumann maintains Pendley’s long list of recusals make it hard for him to do his job at all. As an attorney, Pendley has recused himself from matters related to nearly 60 former clients, many of them extraction companies with stakes in laws and regulations on public lands. Pendley also is overseeing the reorganization and headquarters relocation of the BLM – a move Heumann and many environmental groups see as a way to weaken the agency. “They’re going to drain the BLM and make it look dysfunctional and that it’s not working, and they’re going to use that as a justification to sell off public lands,” she states. October 23, 2019

“And then, everybody who uses them – poor, rich, whatever – are not going to have that access anymore that we’ve always had. And it’s just really unfortunate, because that’s one of the things that makes America so unique.” The Idaho Wildlife Federation joined other groups in sending a letter to Congress demanding that

Pendley be removed and oversight hearings be held on the BLM’s restructuring. The Trump administration has extended Pendley’s contract through the end of the year. After nearly three years in office, President Donald Trump has yet to nominate a permanent director for the agency.

Activists Press Lawmakers to Stop Amazon Ring’s Police Alliances

Critics say Amazon’s Ring partnerships with police departments can lead to civil rights abuses. (Adobe stock) By Desert Star Staff RICHMOND, Va. — Civil rights groups are sounding the alarm about Amazon’s Ring doorbell system.

Representatives from 30 activist groups recently signed an open letter to local and federal lawmakers urging them to curb the surveillance

partnerships that Ring has with police departments. Homeowners can use Ring to record video of anyone who comes to their front

doors. Police officers are then coached by Amazon to request access to the private videos. Malachi Robinson, campaign director with Color of Change, which is one of the groups that signed the letter, said that could lead to civil liberties abuses. “That creates such a power imbalance,” Robinson said. “Most people assume if a police officer asks you for something, they’re telling you that. So it becomes this workaround around the Fourth Amendment, around proper search and seizure, which is extremely disturbing. “ In response to the letter, the company said it has zero tolerance for abuse of its systems and added the technology makes neighborhoods safer. More than 500 city police departments across

the country, including 16 in Virginia, take part in Ring alliances. Robinson said once the surveillance footage is collected without a warrant, law enforcement can use it to conduct facial-recognition searches, target teenagers for minor drug possession or share it with other agencies such as Immigration and Customs Enforcement. “In black and brown communities that have an extremely high police presence, this allows police another entryway to be able to just monitor people,” he said. “And it’s also a way for mistaken identities to happen.” He added that Ring users are able to post footage to Ring’s “Neighbors” social media app, where users can view and comment on videos.

Bullying Gets the Boot in South Dakota Schools

By Desert Star Staff SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Bullying once was viewed as a childhood rite of passage, but now it is recognized as having lifelong implications for physical and mental health. Since 2006, October has been designated National Bullying Prevention Month. Mary McCorkle, president of the South Dakota Education Association, says some students adopt bullying behaviors they see and hear on television or in videos. And that can lead to incidents of intimidation on the playground or school bus. McCorkle adds that when a student is afraid, he or she can’t learn. “Students who are bullied suffer from anxiety, they suffer from depression, social embarrassment and they try to avoid going to school because that’s a source,” she states. In recent years, a series of bullying-related suicides

in the U.S. and across the globe have drawn attention to the connection between bullying and suicide. A study by Yale University found that victims of bullying are from two to nine times more likely to consider suicide than non-victims. Not all children report bullying incidents to their parents, but signs of depression, including poor school performance, changes in appetite, sleep patterns, social withdrawal or sadness can be signs that a child is being targeted with unwanted, aggressive behavior. McCorkle says most schools in South Dakota do training to create classrooms free of bullying, but it takes all personnel paying attention to create a safe environment. “Whether they’re the teachers in the classroom or food service, bus drivers, clerical, etc., we must be their champions,” she stresses.

South Dakota schools are required by law to have a bullying policy that defines the behavior and outlines procedure to report it. (geralt/Pixaby) “If we don’t provide a safe learning environment for them, they will not thrive.” McCorkle adds that the National Education Association makes materials available to schools to build

awareness during National Bullying Prevention Month. Most states, including South Dakota, have antibullying laws that also cover off-campus conduct committed through computers

or electronic devices regardless of time or place. Disclosure: South Dakota Education Association contributes to our fund for reporting on Education.

California Moves Toward More Age-Friendly Future By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. – By 2030, California’s over65 population will grow by four million – and a bill just signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom should help the state plan for this demographic shift. Assembly Bill 1118, from Assemblymember Blanca Rubio, instructs the state to sign onto AARP’s Network of Age-Friendly States and Communities. Jennifer Berdugo, associate state director of community for AARP California, says it’s a framework to help state planners envision a more www.desertstarweekly.com

livable, senior-friendly future. “You know, autonomous vehicles, for example,” says Berdugo. “Is infrastructure going to be there to serve older adults, or people who may have a disability?” Being part of this network helps put an age-friendly lens on the planning process – so, for example, parks can be designed to appeal both to kids and older people, and downtown areas will be zoned to put transportation, parks, businesses, medical facilities and civic spaces in close proximity, to encourage walkability for

those who may not drive. Berdugo says 39 communities across the state are already members of the age-friendly network, and more cities and states are joining. “So, we actually have five states who are enrolled,” says Berdugo. “California would be the sixth, and it would be the first to go through this process legislatively. So, we wanted to have buy-in from our elected officials to really support this effort.” Gov. Newsom issued an executive order earlier this year directing the state to create a Master Plan on October 23, 2019

Groups Oppose Plan to Allow ATVs in Utah National Parks

By Desert Star Staff MOAB, Utah – The peace and quiet of the back roads in many of Utah’s national parks soon could be interrupted by the roar of all-terrain vehicles. Utah conservation groups say a recent memo from the National Park Service directed Utah park superintendents, starting in November, to allow the vehicles, known as ATVs or UTVs, to travel on the same access roads and back roads as cars, trucks and SUVs. Neal Clark, wildlands program director for the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance, says it’s a very bad idea. “Just a terribly shortsighted decision from the administration,” he states. “They’re off-road vehicles. They’re intended to be used off road and they’re just completely contrary to the purpose of the parks and why people visit and cherish them.” The memo instructs the parks to follow a 2008 Utah

law that allows the state’s more than 200,000 licensed off-road vehicles to travel on state and county roads. The Park Service says any vehicle traveling off the roads would be issued a citation. The new rule only applies to parks in Utah, but conservationists fear the changes eventually could spread to other states. Clark says in his experience, if off-road vehicles are allowed in the park, many drivers would likely venture into prohibited areas despite the regulations. He adds that park rangers chasing them down to issue a ticket would do additional damage to the park. And he says the decision will be a nightmare for park maintenance, wildlife and the environment. “We’ve certainly seen UTV use in southern Utah rapidly increase over the years,” he states. “We see a correlated increase in illegal use and destruction of natural

resources. There’s certainly a correlated environmental impact when you unleash these machines.” Off-road vehicles were previously barred from most

national parks in Utah, but after years of lobbying by off-road groups and lawmakers, the Park Service is changing its policy. Clark says the change

is being made without any notice or opportunity for public comment. He says his group and other organizations are considering legal action to stop the move.

By Desert Star Staff RALEIGH, N.C. — Four plaintiffs and the ACLU of North Carolina have filed a class-action lawsuit in a Wake County Superior Court against the state’s use of solitary confinement. The practice involves holding people in isolation cells no larger than a parking space for 22-24 hours a day. Irena Como, acting legal director at the ACLU of North Carolina, said the use of solitary confinement violates the state constitution’s ban on

cruel or unusual punishment. “We are asking that prison officials stop using solitary confinement, and use it only as a last resort for the shortest duration possible and when there is no other option,” Como said. The lawsuit documents how nonviolent transgressions in prison often are penalized with solitary confinement. People can face nearly a month in isolation for possessing a cell phone, lying to prison staff or refusing a drug test. Around 3,000 people

currently are being held in some form of solitary confinement in North Carolina. Como said Rocky Dewalt, one of the plaintiffs in the case, routinely experiences anxiety, depression, paranoia and suicidal thoughts. He has been held in solitary for more than a decade. Como said medical research suggests long-term isolation can profoundly damage the brain. “We know that solitary confinement creates and exacerbates mental illness,” she said. “It makes people

sick, even when they are exposed to solitaryconfinement conditions for a very short amount of time.” Como said she believes the use of solitary confinement makes it even more difficult for imprisoned people to adjust to life after release. “There’s growing consensus as well that solitary does not make us safer. It does not rehabilitate people or prepare them to re-enter society,” she said. A study published in October by the Journal

of the American Medical Association Network found that people released from North Carolina prisons who had spent time in solitary confinement were 24% more likely to die in the first year after their release - especially from suicide, but also from homicide and opioid overdose - than those who had been incarcerated but not held in solitary. The state Department of Safety has not publicly commented on the case.

The National Park Service plans to allow all-terrain vehicles, such as ATVs and UTVs, to travel access roads and back roads in Utah parks beginning in November. (muro/AdobeStock)

Netanyahu says he FAILED to form govt, his rival Gantz given 28 days By Desert Star Staff Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu said he has failed to form a unity government. President Reuven Rivlin is now to give his rival Benny Gantz 28 days to form a coalition, after neither

secured a majority in September’s snap election. Netanyahu informed Rivlin on Monday evening that he was returning the mandate to form a government. In a Facebook video, Netanyahu said he

had worked “relentlessly” to establish a “broad national unity government” which is “what the people wants.” In a statement, Rivlin said he will give Gantz 28 days for the task of forming a coalition. The decision is to

be formally announced within the next couple of days. Gantz, whose Blue and White Party won the most seats in the September election, had previously rejected calls from Netanyahu to form a unity government. Blue and White won 33 seats while Netanyahu’s Likud party won 32, both falling far short of securing the 61 needed to form a majority

government in the 120-seat Knesset (Israeli parliament). Netanyahu’s admission comes before a Wednesday deadline to form a coalition. In his statement, Rivlin said he would speak with other political factions regarding his intention to tap Gantz to form a new government.

Aberration, or logical outgrowth of for-profit US healthcare system? By Helen Buyniski Four major drug companies have reached a partial settlement over their role in the opioid epidemic, dodging a federal trial. The drug plague is less of an accident than an inevitable consequence of a for-profit healthcare system. US drug distributors AmerisourceBergen Corp., Cardinal Health Inc., and McKesson Corp. – as well as Israel-based drug manufacturer Teva Pharmaceuticals – have tentatively settled suits with two Ohio counties for $260 million, over charges they misled the public about the addictive potential of their drugs. The deal narrowly avoids a federal trial that was set to start on Monday, but does not address some 2,600 other suits nationwide against those companies and others – including Purdue Pharma, the company that kicked off the epidemic with its blockbuster opioid OxyContin. More than 20 years and 400,000 deaths after the debut of the devastatingly popular drug, it’s a relief that authorities are finally getting around to holding some of the perpetrators responsible. Opioids kill more Americans every year than car crashes, and have singlehandedly decreased the average US lifespan. However, the crisis is less due to especially evil schemes by those particular companies, and more of the inevitable outcome of a healthcare system where curing the patient pays less than keeping them coming back, again and again. Opioid manufacturers and distributers merely took advantage of a corrupt and

broken business model, where pharmaceutical companies were able to collude with medical authorities to elevate “pain” to the level of a vital sign alongside blood pressure, temperature, respiratory rate and pulse, presenting their product as the only truly effective solution to the problem. When Purdue unleashed OxyContin on the market in 1996, they simply lied and claimed their product had an addiction rate in the single digits. The other companies followed their lead: by the time OxyContin was reformulated to make it less appealing to addicts, there were Vicodin, Lortab, and fentanyl, waiting in the wings. Hand in hand with the American Academy of Pain Medicine, the American Pain Society, and other authoritative-sounding groups, Purdue seduced doctors with an irresistible one-two punch. First they were told they were remiss in not checking all their patients for pain, the fifth vital sign. Then they were told that OxyContin is the only opioid painkiller that has managed to overcome the addictive factor, so they should overcome “opiophobia” and start writing prescriptions. Doctors saw dollar signs in every patient who walked in with a sore back – unlike pulse or temperature, “pain” is a subjective sensation – and if the drug wasn’t addictive, who gets hurt in the case of excessive prescription? Drug reps were showering them with gifts, from hats to branded plush toys. Who could have guessed the stuffed gorilla would turn into a monkey on their back?

By the time doctors figured out they had patients for life – some of whom became hopelessly addicted, after coming in with nothing more than temporary discomfort caused by an accident or injury at work – they had become complicit in addicting huge numbers of Americans to a drug that was actually even more habit-forming than its opioid peers. Purdue paid a measly $635 million in 2007 for misleading doctors with its marketing – a small price to pay for over $35 billion in Oxy profits. Drug-maker obviously did not think it is wrong to create a hugely addictive drug for the purposes of dramatically expanding one’s customer base, ensuring a lifetime flow of profits. If one takes morality out of the equation, their actions look merely like a series of intelligent business decisions. Opioid addiction is big business, even beyond the opioids themselves. Following

up on the Oxy debacle, the Sackler family that owns Purdue Pharma patented a novel form of delivery for buprenorphine – a longacting synthetic opioid used to treat opioid addiction – last year. Buprenorphine itself is addictive, and detoxing from it can take months (while OxyContin detox takes a few weeks). Teva Pharmaceuticals’ donation of $20 million worth of suboxone – another formulation of buprenorphine – as part of Monday’s settlement looks much less charitable in this light. Naloxone is the overdose reversal drug that is now ubiquitous across American cities, with pictographs in store windows allowing the panicked companions of dying addicts to recognize a potential lifesaver from afar. It has more than sextupled in price from 2014 to 2016, going from $690 to $4500. Some $274.1 million worth of naloxone was sold in 2016, according to IQVIA.

JFK Airport Workers Strike for Organizing Rights

International Airport on Monday, saying the company they work for is violating their right to organize. Workers for Eulen America, a subcontractor for

American Airlines, have been organizing at JFK and Newark airports. According to Rob Hill, vice president at Service Employees International Union Local 32BJ, the workers are October 23, 2019

demanding their employer treat them with respect. “They’re being faced with intimidation, surveillance, threats. Supervisors are walking into bathrooms and questioning about the union,” Hill said. “And people have said enough is enough and they walked off the job.” Following a similar action in June, Eulen America said it has no objection if its employees want to unionize. But Hill said the company appears to have different standards for different airports. He noted 32BJ has been organizing airport workers for more than seven years. “Thirty-five companies have agreed to let workers have a union. That’s 10,000 people,” he said. “And here’s Eulen, which is a Spanish company that is union in Spain, union throughout Latin America, saying in New York City and Newark workers can’t have a union.”

The US healthcare system rewards doctors the more they see their patients, disincentivizing quick and easy cures in favor of lifetime treatments. Opioids are just the tip of a pharmaceutical iceberg that includes psychiatric drugs, statins, blood pressure drugs, insulin and other medications – many with serious side effects – meant to be taken for life. Chronic diseases are on the rise even as the cost of treating them skyrockets. As a result, two thirds of Americans who file for bankruptcy do so because of medical issues. Healthcare is a $3.5 trillion industry in the US, and the quality of that care is dead last in the developed world. Hauling the drug companies into court is a good place to start, but without looking at the system that profits handsomely from sickness – but not from cures – it’s virtually guaranteed that tragedies like the opioid epidemic will keep happening.

The striking workers at JFK were joined by local and state elected officials who urged Eulen to respect the workers’ right to organize. Hill said Eulen has a history of workplace violations, not only in New York and Newark, but in Miami and Washington, D.C., as well. And the company is facing lawsuits by former employees alleging sexual harassment and discrimination based on age and race. “The point here is to say, essentially, we’re not going to be harassed, we’re not going to be intimidated. We’re going to come together,” he said. “And threatening one worker means we’re all going to take action.” Disclosure: 32BJ SEIU contributes to our fund for reporting on Budget Policy & Priorities, Hunger/ Food/Nutrition, Immigrant Issues, Livable Wages/ Working Families.

HOROSCOPES ARIES

For many weeks all things mysterious, secret, deeply psychological catch your attention. You develop strategies and a specific philosophy that influences your choices, profession, finances, health, relationships and way of life. It’s important to research and investigate everything with integrity. No short cuts. For Halloween your best costume would be Dr. Freud or Jung. Dressed in symbols.

TAURUS You see both sides of a discussion, listening carefully so right decisions can be made. You need lots of time to think before making definite decisions. Sometimes, you take the other side and this can frustrate the one attempting to be listened to and understood. Try to stand on the side of the speaker. You’re able to bring new ideas to all conversations. For Halloween, be the two Mercury brothers, Castor & Pollux.

each company bargaining with its own workers. Benjamin Sachs, professor of labor and industry at Harvard Law School, said it’s worth noting because union membership has decreased in the United States. He said he thinks that’s partly because of the way businesses or enterprises handle their bargaining now. “The problem with enterprise bargaining,” he said, “is that as soon as you have a union in one enterprise, that puts that enterprise at a competitive disadvantage with all the other enterprises in the same market.” Warren has asserted that if every company in an industry had the same bargaining terms, none would be at a competitive disadvantage about those issues. Sectoral bargaining is used in many European countries, but the idea still is new to the United States. While fewer Americans

are union members than in the past, Sachs argued that doesn’t mean unions are less popular. According to Gallup polling, Americans increasingly have approved of labor unions since 2009, soon after the recession. “The public support for unions has been on the increase,” he said. “You can see that in polling data; you can see that actually in the resurgence of labor activity around the country - the teacher strikes, for emample, the Google walkout, the Wayfair walkout here in Massachusetts.” Sectoral bargaining proponents have argued that it could address issues such as the gig economy, but California’s recent gigeconomy law didn’t include anything about sectoral bargaining - or even workers’ rights to form a union. ‘Mike Wallace Is Here’--A Riveting DVD Documentary

In his 93 minute documentary, director Avi Belkin presents a fast-paced biographical portrait of Mike Wallace, the hard-hitting “60 Minutes” correspondent who interviewed and interrogated celebrities like Oprah and Johnny Carson to political leaders from Nixon to Putin. His hard-hitting journalistic style could strike fear into the hearts of even the most courageous. In fact, he jokingly admitted he would be intimidated by a Mike Wallace interview himself. He was born in Massachusetts in 1918. His beginnings were humble, and his mother, Nina, was stern. When he started out on his career path, he did commercials, pitching Philip Morris Cigarettes long before he became a newsman. (It is interesting to note that while he was an avid cigarette smoker, he lived to the age of 93, dying on April 7, 2012, from natural causes.) In 1957 on “The Mike Wallace Interview,” gangster Mickey Cohen told the journalist he “killed no men that didn’t deserve killing in the first

place.” In another interview with Leona Helmsley, known as the queen of mean, he moved her to tears by asking her about the death of her son. Like Leona, Wallace lost his eldest son, who fell from a cliff while in Greece in 1962. His younger son, Chris Wallace, has followed in his father’s journalistic footsteps and can be seen each week hosting “Fox News Sunday.” At the beginning of the documentary, Bill O’Reilly banters with Wallace and credits him for helping him create his own hardhitting journalistic style. The documentary also contrasts Wallace’s interview techniques with Edward R. Murrow’s more intimate conversational style. There are also friendly chats with Mike and his “60 Minutes” cohosts. While Wallace’s 50-year career was formidable, at times, he suffered from depression, which often took a toll on him. But despite personal demons, he was a masterful interviewer who dealt with Ayatollah Khomeini as well as General William C. Westmorland, who

commanded U.S. forces in Vietnam. That interview led to a libel lawsuit against CBS. Then there was an interview with the Brown & Williamson tobacco company whistleblower Jeffery Wigand and artist Salvador Dali. Wallace noted that in the end, he would like to be remembered as “tough but fair, basically a decent guy.” “Mike Wallace Is Here,” from Magnolia Home

CA “Dadvocates” to Press Congress on Paid Family Leave By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A group of “dadvocates” from California and around the country will converge on Washington, D.C., today, meeting with lawmakers to press for federal paid family leave. As things stand, when a child is born or a family member is sick, in most states companies do not have to grant extended paid time off. Robert Skaggs, from Rancho Cucamonga, has four children, including a young daughter fighting

cancer and an infant son with heart defects. He said parents MUST be able to afford to spend those critical weeks with their loved ones. “That time of transition is absolutely critical for a parent to be there - fathers and mothers,” Skaggs said. “There’s no substitute for your presence.” Skaggs said his employer allowed him unpaid time off. While in the nation’s capital, the group will deliver petitions with 36,000 signatures asking Congress to make family-leave legislation

a priority. California is one of seven states to offer partial salary replacement with paid family leave - but millions, including those working in the gig economy, are not eligible. Salvador Guillermo is a father of two from the City of Orange who works as an independent contractor, so he was not able to take advantage of the state familyleave program and ended up taking time off unpaid. “I wouldn’t want anybody else to go through what I went through as far as not being able to pay your bills, not

having that income coming because you chose to be with your family,” Guillermo said. Nationwide, 114 million people have no access to paid family leave. Out of 193 countries in the United Nations, only a small handful do not have a national paid parental leave law: New

Guinea, Suriname, a few South Pacific island nations and the United States. Disclosure: Paid Leave for the U.S. (PL+US) contributes to our fund for reporting on Early Childhood Education, Family/Father Issues, Livable Wages/Working Families, Women’s Issues.

An Easy, Stylish Decorating Upgrade

A wall-mount door makes more room for fun By Desert Star Staff Fall is the perfect time to make space-saving upgrades to your house. For example, consider swapping out a traditional swinging door for a smoothgliding, wall-mounted sliding door. A sliding door can add up to 14 square feet of floor space, which allows for more room to spread out toys and games, and give a more spacious feel to nearly any room. They also allow for more flexibility in furniture

arrangements, which can turn even the smallest nook in your house into a cozy space. It’s easy to do with an option like Johnson Hardware’s Soft-Close Wall-Mount Sliding Door Hardware, which can be used with virtually any metal or wood door from 1-inch to 1 3/4-inches thick, up to 48 inches wide and weighing up to 200 pounds. The U.S.-made hardware gently slows the door’s travel speed to softly pull it into the fully open or fully closed position and works like

a cabinet door closer, enabling doors to open and close quietly and securely. It also prevents door slamming and pinched fingers, as well as reducing door operational noise. The built-in satin or bronze finish fascia can give a warm decorative detail to a room while the smooth-rolling door hardware and track exceed ANSI standards, meaning it can successfully complete 100,000 opening and closing cycles, with adjustable door guides, tricycle hangers and

adjustable track stops. The jump-proof aluminum box track is available in lengths up to 96 inches for single doors and up to 192 inches for double doors. Installing wall-mount sliding door hardware in a playroom, or nearly any other room in your house, can be an easy

yet high-impact improvement that reduces space constraints while adding warmth, functionality and visual appeal. For more information, visit johnsonhardware. com. Family Features

Oswit Canyon Preservation Group Close to Reaching Final Goal

By Desert Star Staff Palm Springs, CA: The fight to save Oswit Canyon from development started over three years ago, in April of 2016. At that time, the group, Save Oswit Canyon, reached out to the developers to inquire about purchasing the land to protect this habitat of Peninsular bighorn sheep, bald eagles, other desert wildlife, and the last undeveloped alluvial fan in Palm Springs. Oswit Canyon, just off S Palm Canyon Drive and adjacent to the Lykken trail, is home to six endangered species, two threatened species, and thirty-two federally

protected migratory birds. Save Oswit Canyon is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and the group has already sourced 93% of the funds it needs to close the deal and the threat of development by the end of the year. If the group fails and falls short of its funding, the developer will move forward to build over 200 homes in Oswit Canyon. Attempting to raise more awareness, the group has launched a yard sign campaign to get the rest of the community on board. “The next step toward finding the funds for this

incredible and important preservation of the last of Palm Spring’s alluvial fan ecosystems is to reach out to the surrounding community members,” says Save Oswit Canyon’s president and founder, Jane Garrison. “This conservation effort takes a village, and we are asking that local businesses, hotels, and citizens help us succeed. We understand the local community is essential to creating a preserve, and we are asking for that help, at our most critical juncture.” If the funding for the preservation fails and development goes through,

some of those newly built homes might become competition for hotels in the area, as short-term rentals like Airbnb and VRBO. So there is an incentive for businesses like hotels, primarily to participate in providing funds to ensure this development never moves forward. But the group is very hopeful that development doesn’t happen. “It’s been a long, hard fight,” states Garrison. “And we can’t lose this opportunity over only 7% of the funds we need. This is a prime eco-tourism destination. The Lykken trail hosts thousands of hikers and

How to Have ‘A Good Death’

By Desert Star Staff SEATTLE — Leaders of the alternative death movement are in Seattle today for a conference on how to reclaim the end of life. YES! Magazine will host “A Good Death,” bringing together local and national figures thinking about and approaching death differently. Sarah Chavez is conference moderator and executive director of The Order of the Good Death, an organization focused on healing the disconnect between families and the funeral experience. She said Seattle has become the epicenter for people working toward reimagining death care. “You’ll get to meet a lot of the major players that are really at the forefront of helping people have a healthier relationship with death, protecting our death rights and care, and providing different, more eco-friendly and costeffective options,” Chavez said. In 2019, the Washington Legislature passed a law allowing people to compost their remains. Katrina Spade, panel guest and founder of Recompose, said it makes the state the most progressive in the nation on death care. Recompose is pioneering the method for turning human remains into soil. Spade said the process mimics nature - much like what would happen to a body left in the forest. The sustainable process sequesters about 1 cubic yard of carbon in the soil, avoiding emissions from cremation or burial. “I started this work because I realized that whether you choose conventional burial or cremation, the last gesture

you’ll make on this planet will pollute it,” Spade said. “And I thought that that just seemed awfully disappointing.” Chavez said the medical and funeral industries established the current practices for the end of life more than a century ago, and the practices have been

industry-led ever since. She said she’d like to see things shift towards being more human-centered and with more room for family involvement. “Even though we prepare for things like graduations, for having a baby - we educate ourselves about these huge

Tired Of Living With Chronic Pain? Know-How To Talk To Your Doctor

By Desert Star Staff The opioid crisis has shown that the U.S. is a nation in pain — chronic pain. Over 20 percent of the country’s adult population — 50 million people — live with persistent or frequently recurring pain, according to a report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Living with chronic pain can adversely affect one’s quality of life daily, from performing simple tasks to work, relationships, and sleeping. While some people can’t find a remedy and learn to accept chronic pain, they may be missing out on a cure. How? Because they haven’t had a comprehensive discussion about the symptoms with their doctor. “Unfortunately, there isn’t a pain scale, like a blood-pressure monitor, that doctors can use to diagnose pain,” says Dr. Suhyun An (www.drsuhyunan.com), an expert on regenerative medicine and co-author of Demystifying Stem Cells: A Real-Life Approach to Regenerative Medicine. “While talking to your health care provider about chronic pain can be difficult, it is a conversation worth having. “Doctors will not know the location, timing, or intensity of your pain unless you tell them, and being specific is important for diagnostic purposes. Knowing how to talk with them can be a big step toward finding relief.” An offers ways to communicate effectively with your doctor about your chronic pain symptoms: Give details of your pain in writing. Putting down on paper, the chronology of your pain provides a road map for the physician. “Writing down the description, timeline, location, frequency, and intensity of your pain can help get your care provider on the right track,” An says. “Make sure to include how the pain affects your daily activities, and go over your daily routine.” Create a list of questions. Sometimes, people walk out of a doctor’s visit having forgotten to ask some key questions. Be prepared, and that won’t happen. “The goal is to find the source of the pain,” An says, “so that should be the first question: ‘What causes my chronic pain?’ Have at least three questions you’re ready to ask, such as, ‘What are the available treatments, and what’s the best option for me? Does my daily diet and lifestyle contribute to the pain?’ ” Point to the pain. “If your pain moves around, tell your doctor about all the areas that can be painful and the

12

areas that hurt most often,” An says. “Your doctor needs to determine if the pain comes on more slowly and sticks around a long time before lessening, or if it comes on suddenly and sporadically, then leaves suddenly.” Be assertive. “Tell the doctor what you want — be direct,” An says. “Do you expect to have tests to diagnose a cause? Do you want more in-depth information about your condition, and does the doctor know enough about it to be able to address it effectively? Have the doctor explain what the tools and tests are and why they would help. Doing everything in your power to explain your

pain clearly and accurately gives you the best chances of being heard and treated appropriately.” “Health care providers can’t feel your pain, so you need to communicate clearly and work together for a solution,” An says. “If you’re unsatisfied with their response or uncertain about how to move forward, referrals to other providers may be needed.”

Each of the concert films on the set stands alone and distinctive form the other. The first film, “Curaetion 25: From There To Here / From Here To There” was filmed on the tenth and final night of the 25th Meltdown Festival at London’s Royal Festival Hall on June 24, 2018. Directed by Nick Wickham, the Cure (singerguitarist Robert Smith, bassist Simon Gallup, drummer Jason Cooper, keyboardist Roger O’Donnell, guitarist Reeves Gabrels) performed a song from each of their 13 studio albums in chronological order, the idea being to showcase

the evolution of the Cure’s sound from 1978 to 2018. The band then performed two unreleased songs from 2018, and then journeyed backward to play an equal number of tracks and ending with a song from 1979. Directed by Tim Pope, “Anniversary: 1978-2018 Live In Hyde Park London” features The Cure’s complete 29-song, 135-minute concert in front of a crowd of 65,000. All of the band’s bestknown songs are covered across the two full-length concert films. Early-era favorites “10:15 Saturday Night,” “Jumping Someone Else’s Train,” “A Forest” and “Boys Don’t Cry” are here along the British band’s best-known radio hits (“Just Like Heaven,” “Friday I’m In Love,” “Why Can’t I Be You,” “Lovesong”). But more than any single song or moment, it is the depth, range and sweeping power displayed both marathon-length performances that impress to be sure; the conceptwinning visuals and amazing immersive audio quality add to the experience across the two concerts. certified in the rock ‘n’ roll universe but it sure doesn’t hurt to have the band’s final studio album reissued via an expanded and glorious edition sure to please followers of the groundbreaking power pop heroes. Through a series of unfortunate series of events and ill-fated timing, the Memphis-spawned outfit’s first three albums released in the 1970s failed to make an impactful commercial mark even while ultimately consistently landing on many rock aficionados “best of all time” lists. Few fans were anticipating the release of “In Space” in September 2005, a full-length studio LP featuring original members Alex Chilton and Jody Stephens joined by the Posies’ Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow. Omnivore Recordings’ 2019 remastered reissue of the album casts a spectacular and well-deserved spotlight on “In Space” with the release featuring all dozen original tracks (10 originals, a soulful cover of The Olympics’ “Mine Exclusively” and French Baroque composer Georg Muffat’s “Aria, Largo”), as well as six bonus tracks. There are a slew of wonderful tracks on “In Space,” notably the Artist: Big Star melodic opener “Dony,” the Title: In Space (Omnivore enticing “Lady Sweet,” the Recordings) Beatlesque “Best Chance,” You might like if you enjoy: the shimmering “February’s Big Star, The Replacements, Quiet” and the reflective “Hung The Box Tops Up With Summer.” Notable Tell me more: Big Star’s among the bonus tracks is enduring legacy has long been the soulful rocker “Hot Thing”

Liberals and Conservatives neck and neck in Canadian election

By Desert Star Staff Canadians heading to the polls are faced with the choice of whether to grant a second term to scandal-plagued PM Justin Trudeau and his Liberal Party — or to hand the reins of power to Andrew Scheer and the Conservatives. Trudeau, who raced to historic victory four years ago having branded himself as a young, fresh-faced progressive, likely did not expect to face such an uphill battle just four years later. Polls are extremely tight, and analysts expect that whether the Liberals or Conservatives manage to pull ahead on Monday, the most likely outcome is that a minority government will be formed — a scenario in which the leading party must win support from other parties to be able to successfully pass legislation. An Ipsos poll published on October 15 showed the Liberals at 35 percent support and the Conservatives at 34 percent — but the most recent pre-election indications from the pollster showed the Conservatives with a slight lead of 33 percent to the Liberals’ 31 percent. No party, however, looks likely to win the 170 seats necessary to form a majority government in the House of Commons. Referendum on Trudeau? One thing is certain, however: Monday’s election

gains during the final weeks of the campaign, thanks in part to strong debate performances by party leader Jagmeet Singh. The party has climbed from 14 percent support to around 20 percent support right before the election, according to some polls. The Green Party, meanwhile, who have positioned themselves as the only party serious about tackling climate change, have been hovering around 8 percent support. Aware that many progressives are sorely disappointed in his leadership, Trudeau has encouraged Canadians to vote tactically, arguing that by giving their vote to the Greens or the NDP, they is seen not necessarily as an to betray his promises by risk allowing the Conservatives assessment of the Liberals in putting corporate oil interests to slip into power. general, but as a referendum ahead of environmentalism Lesser-supported fringe on Trudeau personally. feel they aren’t reaping the benefits or seeing the results in their own pockets. While some say they care about climate issues, many are also angered by the federal carbon tax imposed on provinces that failed to bring in their own climate change plans. Healthcare has also been a major issue, despite a general consensus that Canada is an example of a country with a successful healthcare system. While the government covers necessary healthcare costs for Canadians, there are still concerns over wait times for non-emergency treatments and procedures, as well as complaints about the lack of doctors in more rural areas. The Conservatives have promised to cut wait times by buying more MRI and CT scan machines, while the Liberals say they will cut prescription costs. Though, overall, many Canadians still feel the election campaign has been mostly about “nothing” and has been a “desert” from a public policy perspective, with no one issue dominating the headlines, no big ideas, and the vote turning into a referendum on Trudeau more than a serious discussion of policy differences. Preliminary results are expected to be announced at around 8pm on Monday, but Canadians may be left in a cliffhanger situation if predictions are correct and neither party wins enough seats to form a majority government. In the event that the Conservatives win more seats than the Liberals, Trudeau, as the leader of the party in power, would technically still be allowed the first shot at forming a government with support from other parties. Yet, whatever happens, it certainly looks unlikely that Trudeau will pull off a repeat of the 2015 election when his party won 184 seats in a stunning upset, stealing power from the Conservatives, who had held on to it for the previous decade.

Bot race! Mitt Romney admits he’s ‘Pierre Delecto,’ anon Twitter handle

By Desert Star Staff Utah Senator Mitt Romney has come clean about running a secret anonymous Twitter handle – “Pierre Delecto” – which passive-aggressively dumped on Trump and other Republican rivals while puffing up Romney and his allies. Mitt Romney is Pierre Delecto. Pierre Delecto is Mitt Romney. The ultrawealthy Mormon senator, recently rumored to be testing the waters for yet another presidential run, admitted he was behind the nom de tweet on Sunday after telling

DesertSTAR

an Atlantic reporter he had a secret account – “What do they call me, a lurker?” – created to monitor political conversation. “Pierre” mostly expressed himself through “likes” of other posts – he was a big fan of anything critical of Trump, especially the president’s Syria policy. He regularly “liked” Mitt Romney’s posts. When confronted with his alter ego – he had given enough clues for another reporter to track him down, apparently wanting to be caught – he responded “C’est moi,” and set @qaws9876 to private.

The account dates back to 2011. It followed a slew of never-Trump Republicans and Romney family members, but rarely tweeted… except occasionally in support of Romney. Twitter had a field day with the revelation, likening the odd pseudonym to “Carlos Danger,” the name disgraced Congressman Anthony Weiner used to send lewd photos to underage girls. Fan accounts were made. Several people suggested they would dress as Romney’s alter ego for Halloween. But October 23, 2019

what would that look like? Romney claimed to be “open to the idea that the president may need to be removed from the

Oval Office,” but has shied away from directly cheering on impeachment, at least under his real name.

Fear of catastrophic quake grows in California

By Desert Star Staff Caltech researchers say there is an elevated risk that a long-overdue earthquake, dubbed the ‘Big One,’ is on the way, after recent seismic activity shifted a previouslydormant fault line for the first time in 500 years. California was rocked by several major earthquakes in July and August. The Ridgecrest earthquake in Southern California was the strongest in 20 years and caused roughly 100,000 aftershocks. All of the pressure from these tremors and aftershocks was so extreme that it apparently woke a sleeping giant in the form of the 185-mile-long Garlock Fault, causing it to ‘creep’ almost an inch (a big deal in geological terms if nothing else). “This is surprising because

we’ve never seen the Garlock Fault do anything. Here, all of a sudden, it changed behavior,” said Zachary Ross, assistant professor of geophysics at Caltech and an author of a study on the fault. There are now fears that if Garlock keeps creeping it may disturb the San Andreas fault and trigger the long-feared ‘Big One’ which could devastate the entire state and swallow cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles whole. The southern San Andreas Fault experiences major quakes roughly every 150 years, the last of which took place in 1857, meaning the fear of a potentially cataclysmic future megaquake grows every year. According to the USGS, there is a 31% chance that the ‘Big One’ (a magnitude 7.5 and above earthquake)

will strike Los Angeles in the coming three decades. Roughly 10 million people live in LA county. The spectra of the ‘Big One’ has loomed large ever since San Francisco was

struck by a 7.9 earthquake in 1906 which killed an estimated 3,000 people. For perspective, however, seismologist Lucy Jones claims there is a 2% chance of the ‘Big One’ striking each

year, and a one in 20,000 chance each and every day that the long-anticipated temblor will finally churn the ground beneath California.

Trump ‘fully prepared’ for military action against Turkey – Pompeo

By Desert Star Staff US President Donald Trump is “fully prepared” to use military force against Turkey if “needed,” Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has declared, qualifying the statement by insisting

Washington prefers to use its “diplomatic powers.” “We prefer peace to war,” Pompeo told CNBC in a taped interview that aired Monday afternoon. But in the event that kinetic action or military

action is needed, you should know that President Trump is fully prepared to undertake that action. He stopped short of revealing what action on Turkey’s part would constitute such a “need.”

Pompeo added that Washington would use economic and “diplomatic powers” before breaking out the heavy artillery. He did not want to “get out in front of the president’s decision about whether to take the awesome undertaking of using America’s military might,” he said, indicating that it was up to Trump to decide whether Ankara had crossed the line. Trump had earlier touted the wisdom of giving Turkey some space to enact its campaign on the border of Syria against Kurdish groups Ankara considers to be terrorists. “Sometimes you have to let them fight a little while, then people find out how tough the fighting is,” he quipped at a campaign rally last week. “Sometimes you have to let them fight like two kids in a lot, you gotta let them fight, and then you pull them apart.” Turkey and the US agreed

on a five-day ceasefire last week, allowing the Kurds to clear the area Ankara wants to turn into a safe zone. While both sides have accused the other of breaking the temporary truce, Trump bragged to reporters on Monday that “the ceasefire’s holding.” Some US troops were withdrawn from northeast Syria earlier this month before Turkey launched its operation, but their future remains unknown. The Pentagon insists they will remain in Syria to guard the oil fields while Trump has said they will be redeployed elsewhere in the Middle East. The Pentagon has called on NATO to sanction Turkey, despite its being a member of the alliance, and both the president and Congress have threatened their own sanctions against the country.

Turkey names US convicted banker as head of Stock Exchange

By Desert Star Staff A Turkish banker convicted of helping Iran avoid US sanctions has been named head of the Turkish stock exchange in a defiant gesture to Washington as US President Donald Trump threatens Ankara with its own sanctions. Hakan Atilla has been appointed general manager of Borsa Istanbul, Turkish Finance Minister Berat Albayrak announced on Monday. Atilla, a former deputy general manager at Turkish state-owned

Halkbank, returned to Turkey in July after serving part of a 32-month prison sentence. He was convicted in 2018 of five counts of conspiracy and bank fraud related to his alleged involvement in a multibillion-dollar sanctions dodging scheme, but Turkey maintained his innocence throughout the trial proceedings, slamming the guilty verdict as “scandalous.” Halkbank itself was hit with a six-count indictment for fraud, money laundering, and sanctions offenses last week centering on the transfer of

some $20 billion in Iranian oil and gas profits between 2012 and 2016. Meanwhile, Trump has promised a 50-percent tariff on Turkish steel and cancelled a $100 billion trade deal over Turkey’s anti-terror operation in northeast Syria, while the Pentagon has called on Ankara’s NATO allies to sanction the country. Should Turkey misbehave in some way, Trump warned repeatedly, he would “destroy Turkey’s economy.” Congress has also begun the process of sanctioning Turkey over its activity in Syria, October 23, 2019

which is aimed at carving out a safe zone some 30km from the Turkish border to prevent attacks from Kurdish militias Ankara considers terrorists. Accused of devising a system to smuggle billions of dollars in Iranian funds through US financial institutions, Attila was fingered in 2016 by gold trader Reza Zarrab, who turned state’s witness and worked with the US government to ensnare the banker when he came to the US on a business trip. While Zarrab admitted to lying to federal agents,

netting $150 million in profits from the scheme, and bribing Turkish co-conspirators, it was Atilla - who was on a plane with no cellphone service when he was supposedly making the calls that proved his involvement in the setup who ended up taking the fall. Zarrab was insulated from the fallout from his own misdeeds by his relationship with former New York mayor and current Trump advisor Rudy Giuliani, who pressed the president to drop the charges against the gold trader.

“Last Swallows” Explores Family Dynamic of Inclusion/Exclusion

By Lisa Lyons Families have always been ripe ground for playwrights to mine - but in current times, the issues of samesex marriage and financial inequality have added fuel to the fire. Playwright Cailin Maureen Harrison dives headfirst into this topic in her latest dramedy “Last Swallows,” directed by Kiff Scholl and now playing at the Other Space at The Actors Company on Formosa Avenue in West Hollywood. How to describe the Whitestone family? They drink - a lot; they argue frequently; they talk over each other - constantly, but in the end, they love each other - completely. Matriarch Elizabeth (a fine, measured performance by Shaw Purnell) worried over her husband Robert’s declining health, is determined to bring her fractured family together for one last vacation in Martha’s Vineyard. Not an easy task to orchestrate as Elizabeth discovers when trying to wrangle her three grown children and their families into committing to a firm date. International financier Thomas (Ty Mayberry, a dead ringer for Eric McCormack) and his California-born homeopathic healer wife Moira (a sensitive and finely honed portrayal by Leilani Smith) are juggling the travel demands of his career and their recent decision to relocate to California. Uptight eldest daughter Julia (Tina Van Berckelaer), the manager of a florist shop, and her UPS delivery man husband Edward (Matthew Downs) are struggling to raise their family on a tight budget. Her simmering resentment of her siblings and their perceived lack

www.desertstarweekly.com

of support of their elderly parents drives her fevered interactions with everyone, much to her detriment. Youngest child Caroline (Abby Eiland) is a high-strung, successful doctor, married to Simone (Leah Zhang), a local politician amid a reelection campaign. Any advice Caroline dares to offer to her mother regarding her father’s health is pounced on and rejected by an angry Julia who continually reminds her, “But you’re not Dad’s doctor!” Overall, things are tense in the Whitestone family. In self-defense, father Robert (Bob Telford) retreats into his singular hobby of bird watching, commenting wryly on his situation from behind large binoculars, despite Elizabeth’s efforts to engage him in their domestic life. As you can imagine, the stage is set for epic conflicts and emotional meltdowns, and Harrison’s play delivers all that, but don’t think “August Osage County” here - these are New Englanders with all their WASP mores and attitudes embedded. We eventually come to see that the real heart of this play is the loving relationship between Elizabeth and Moira, which is resented by the sisters and nearly sabotaged by Robert. Moira is the only one who truly listens to and understands Elizabeth. She soothes, tends to, and attempts to lighten the load for her stressed-out motherin-law. No wonder Elizabeth is devastated by the news that Thomas and Moira are set to move 3000 miles away, especially when we realize why Elizabeth needs her support more than ever now. It is a beautifully realized performance by both actors. That being said, it is not

Leilani Smith, Ty Mayberry, Tina Van Berckelaer, Matthew Downs, Shaw Purnell, Bob Telford Abby Eiland and Leah Zhang. Photo by Ed Krieger easy to follow the action in this often fractured play. The choice is made to stage the show in four separate areas of action, representing the homes of each family member, which gets a little busy. The playwright, or perhaps the director, has the actors overlap their lines or speak simultaneously, which can work in a Sondheim musical or TV sitcom, but not so well here; it’s a device that becomes tiresome after a while. There is also the use of overpowering music during scene changes, which is supposed to serve as commentary to the action

October 23, 2019

but is often intrusive. Despite those hiccups, the cast does a good job portraying the loving chaos of the Whitestone family. Thomas and Moira are definitely the most fleshedout characters, too bad that Robert, Caroline, and Julia are annoyingly self-consumed and unsympathetic characters. One pities their long-suffering yet supportive spouses! In addition to veteran director Scholl, the behind the scenes team makes the most of the small space provided - a nod to scenic designer Brad Bentz, lighting designer Josh La Cour, and sound

designer Jesse Mandapat. There is a lovely coda to the play, which features a poem that captures the wistful quality of family dynamics. When one leaves the theater, it is with a new appreciation for our loved ones, despite everything we endure in our lives with them. “Last Swallows” runs through October 20 at The Other Space at The Actors Company, 916 A North Formosa Avenue in West Hollywood. Tickets are $30 and can be obtained by visiting www.Onstage411. com/swallows or by calling 323-960-5770.
