NBC PS News Staff Strong Santa Ana winds are expected in the Inland Empire Thursday and Friday, raising the threat of wildfires and prompting potential power shutoffs for tens of thousands of customers to limit the risk of accidental fires.

The National Weather Service issued a red flag warning, in effect from 5 a.m.

Thursday to 5 p.m. Friday in the Riverside County mountains and valleys, with the fiercest winds likely Thursday morning.

The agency said sustained winds of 25 to 35 mph are expected, but gusts could reach 75 mph in mountains and narrow passes, including

the San Gorgonio Pass, where a 1,000-acre wildfire destroyed 75 mobile homes and other structures and caused the deaths of two people in Calimesa less than two weeks ago.

Daytime humidity could drop as low as 5% Thursday and high temperatures in the inland region will reach the low 90s, exacerbating fire hazards.

The NWS also issued a high wind warning that will be in effect in the county valleys until 2 p.m. Friday. Officials warned that damaging winds could blow down trees and power lines, while travel

After-School Poetry Program Creates “Confident Young People”

By Desert Star Staff It’s Lights On Afterschool Day, a celebration of the expanded learning opportunities available to children after the final school bell.

In Washington state, more than 180,000 kids are in after-school programs, but they’re outnumbered by the number of kids who are alone or unsupervised, at more than 215,000, according to the “ target=”parent”>Afterschool Alliance. Another 330,000 are waiting for a program.

One group serving Pierce County youths after school is Write 253, which has a number of programs including Louder Than a Bomb, which prepares teens for a team slam poetry festival in March.

“Programs like ours help create confident young people,” said Michael Haeflinger, Write 253’s executive director. “A lot of times, the kids that we work with maybe feel a bit

on the margins, and so, by offering them a stage and a crowd, it helps them to become more confident.”

Haeflinger said the program is creating a community of young poets in Tacoma.

Seventy percent of Washington parents say after-school programs reduce the likelihood that kids will engage in risky behavior.

Kathy Oehrling, who runs YMCA child care at Spokane’s Farwell Elementary School, said kids likely would be unsupervised without this program. Oehrling, who provides learning opportunities for kids and also helps with homework, said parents are thrilled this exists.

“They’re very pleased that we have them,” she said, “because it gives them a place to be and to make friends and to be a part of something.”

Challenging Place for Professional Women of Color

Women in Minnesota make up the majority of workers in the state who work in low-wage fields and earn minimum wage or lower, according to a 2018 survey. (Brodie Vissers)

By Desert Star Staff MINNEAPOLIS – Minneapolis is one of seven cities in the United States that are hosting the State of

Women of Color Roadshow, with national and local speakers focused on closing achievement gaps for minority women in the workplace.

Minnesota state officials have been challenged with closing gaps in such areas as education and housing, but local business leaders

also are hoping they’ll notice that people of color have a harder time advancing on the job, especially women.

One of those leaders pushing for change is Sharon Smith-Akinsanya, chief executive of Twin Cities marketing firm Rae Mackenzie Group, who will be a speaker at the event.

“And it’s even worse for women of color because of the economic disparity, right? When we think about childcare, access to child care, access to revenue,” she said.

A 2018 study from the Women’s Foundation of Minnesota found that women of color were 20% less likely to be trained in management and professional fields than were their white counterparts. It also said Minnesota’s Hmong women make 57 cents for every dollar earned by a white man.

Tonight’s event will be held at The Riveter in Edina.

The roadshow event is aimed at including all marginalized workers, including trans women and women with disabilities.

Smith-Akinsanya said young women of color need to be proactive when entering the professional field, so they’re not left behind. She said establishing networks among their peers is key.

“Get connected to your employee resource network of choice,” she said, “whether it’s African-American, Latino - whatever works for you.”

She said it’s also important to seek out mentors to help achieve career goals. That’s part of the advice she’ll give as a speaker at tonight’s event.

Emergency Power Shutoff could affect part Of CV

NBC PS News Staff Southern California Edison added Desert Hot Springs and North Palm Springs to a list of areas that could be impacted by a public safety power shutoff should weather conditions pose a high fire risk in the coming days.

Neighborhoods east and west of North Indian Canyon Road north of Interstate 10 are among numerous areas across the Southland placed under an emergency-shutoff notice.

The National Weather Service said low humidity and

strong winds are expected to elevate the fire danger in the region Thursday.

The temporary power shutoff is designed to prevent wildfires from igniting due to malfunctioning electrical equipment or downed power lines during gusty and arid conditions.

“Turning off our customers’ power is not something we take lightly, but PSPS (power safety power shutoff) events are one of the ways we can better ensure the safety of the public, our customers,

and our employees,” Edison said in a statement.

Edison officials said those within outage boundaries should fully charge their devices each night and advised those with medical devices that rely on AC power to develop a backup plan in advance.

1. Get plenty of rest.

The holiday season pulls people in many directions, and that can mean getting less sleep than you need.

However, being tired not only has a physical impact on how you feel, it can affect your ability to process emotions.

2. Give yourself permission to take a break.

No two people process grief and loss the same way; only you know your limits. Even in a season filled with obligations and commitments, know that it’s OK to set boundaries and remove yourself from holiday reminders and triggers. That may mean flipping the channel on the TV or bypassing the holiday display at the store.

Taking care of yourself when you’re grieving isn’t just about finding comfort, it’s also about avoiding discomfort.

3. Be realistic with your commitments. You may be the one who hosts your family’s holiday celebration every year, but if others offer to take responsibility, let them.

Allow loved ones to help, and if they don’t volunteer, don’t be afraid to ask.

4. Look for tangible ways to express feelings.

6. Honor your feelings and needs. As most who have experienced loss know, grief comes in waves. The only way to process grief is to ride one wave to the next.

That may mean putting off your holiday shopping for a day when you’re feeling less

emotional or bowing out of an event you planned to attend.

7. Include your loved one in the holidays. There’s no right or wrong way to incorporate your loved one’s memory; that all depends on what feels right to you. It may mean serving his or her favorite dish, placing a photo on the mantel or simply slipping a memento in your pocket so you can touch it when you’re feeling overwhelmed.

Hospital Research Makes SIDS a Little Less Mysterious

By Desert Star Staff BOSTON – October is Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Awareness Month, and a hospital may be on the way to early diagnosis for some infants.

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) happens when a baby can’t wake up during REM sleep when facing a modest threat to his or her breathing, such as loose bedding or sleeping face down.

Experts in the Roberts Program at Boston Children’s Hospital are beginning to

understand the brain functions in many of these infants.

Dr. Rick Goldstein, who directs the program, said the research suggests around 40% of SIDS infants had low levels of serotonin in the part of the brain that controls breathing.

“Someday,” he said, “you might be able to include a test for serotonin on your newborn screen and find children who are at risk.”

This insight could pave the way for a diagnostic tool at birth, such as a blood test.

But Goldstein said the research is in its beginning stages. The Roberts Program also has developed a 250-plus gene panel linked to potentially fatal conditions that can cause sudden death in children and infants. They think a number of different genes put infants at greater risk for SIDS. The safest sleep environment for infants is on their backs and without loose bedding. Goldstein said another 40% of SIDS cases fall under one large biological group.

“Equivalent numbers of infants have these findings in the brain that are elsewhere described as part of epilepsy,” he said.

Goldstein said signs of epilepsy can affect a baby’s ability to wake up. The Roberts Program focuses on helping any family whose child has died from SIDS or unexplained causes, including grieving resources and post-mortem analysis.

Tired Of Living With Chronic Pain?

Know-How To Talk To Your Doctor

By Desert Star Staff The opioid crisis has shown that the U.S. is a nation in pain — chronic pain. Over 20 percent of the country’s adult population — 50 million people — live with persistent or frequently recurring pain, according to a report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Living with chronic pain can adversely affect one’s quality of life daily, from performing simple tasks to work, relationships, and sleeping. While some people can’t find a remedy and learn to accept chronic pain, they may be missing out on a cure. How? Because they haven’t had a comprehensive discussion about the symptoms with their doctor.

“Unfortunately, there isn’t a pain scale, like a blood-pressure monitor, that doctors can use to diagnose pain,” says Dr. Suhyun An (www.drsuhyunan.com), an expert on regenerative medicine and co-author of Demystifying Stem Cells: A Real-Life Approach to Regenerative Medicine.

“While talking to your health care provider about chronic pain can be difficult, it is a conversation worth having.

“Doctors will not know the location, timing, or intensity of your pain unless you tell them, and being specific is important for diagnostic purposes. Knowing how to talk with them can be a big step toward finding relief.”

An offers ways to communicate effectively with your doctor about your chronic pain symptoms: Give details of your pain in writing. Have at least three questions you’re ready to ask, such as, ‘What are the available treatments, and what’s the best option for me? Does my daily diet and lifestyle contribute to the pain?’ ” Point to the pain. “If your pain moves around, tell your doctor about all the areas that can be painful and the

areas that hurt most often,” An says. “Your doctor needs to determine if the pain comes on more slowly and sticks around a long time before lessening, or if it comes on suddenly and sporadically, then leaves suddenly.”

Be assertive. “Tell the doctor what you want — be direct,” An says. “Do you expect to have tests to diagnose a cause? Do you want more in-depth information about your condition, and does the doctor know enough about it to be able to address it effectively? Have the doctor explain what the tools and tests are and why they would help. Doing everything in your power to explain your

pain clearly and accurately gives you the best chances of being heard and treated appropriately.”

“Health care providers can’t feel your pain, so you need to communicate clearly and work together for a solution,” An says. “If you’re unsatisfied with their response or uncertain about how to move forward, referrals to other providers may be needed.”

‘Mike Wallace Is Here’--A Riveting DVD Documentary

In his 93 minute documentary, director Avi Belkin presents a fast-paced biographical portrait of Mike Wallace, the hard-hitting “60 Minutes” correspondent who interviewed and interrogated celebrities like Oprah and Johnny Carson to political leaders from Nixon to Putin.

His hard-hitting journalistic style could strike fear into the hearts of even the most courageous.

In fact, he jokingly admitted he would be intimidated by a Mike Wallace interview himself.

He was born in Massachusetts in 1918. His beginnings were humble, and his mother, Nina, was stern. When he started out on his career path, he did commercials, pitching Philip Morris Cigarettes long before he became a newsman. (It is interesting to note that while he was an avid cigarette smoker, he lived to the age of 93, dying on April 7, 2012, from natural causes.)

In 1957 on “The Mike Wallace Interview,” gangster Mickey Cohen told the journalist he “killed no men that didn’t deserve killing in the first

place.” In another interview with Leona Helmsley, known as the queen of mean, he moved her to tears by asking her about the death of her son. Like Leona, Wallace lost his eldest son, who fell from a cliff while in Greece in 1962.

His younger son, Chris Wallace, has followed in his father’s journalistic footsteps and can be seen each week hosting “Fox News Sunday.”

At the beginning of the documentary, Bill O’Reilly banters with Wallace and credits him for helping him create his own hardhitting journalistic style. The documentary also contrasts Wallace’s interview techniques with Edward R. Murrow’s more intimate conversational style. There are also friendly chats with Mike and his “60 Minutes” cohosts.

While Wallace’s 50-year career was formidable, at times, he suffered from depression, which often took a toll on him.

But despite personal demons, he was a masterful interviewer who dealt with Ayatollah Khomeini as well as General William C. Westmorland, who

commanded U.S. forces in Vietnam. That interview led to a libel lawsuit against CBS. Then there was an interview with the Brown & Williamson tobacco company whistleblower Jeffery Wigand and artist Salvador Dali.

Wallace noted that in the end, he would like to be remembered as “tough but fair, basically a decent guy.”

CA “Dadvocates” to Press Congress on Paid Family Leave

— A group of “dadvocates” from California and around the country will converge on Washington, D.C., today, meeting with lawmakers to press for federal paid family leave.

As things stand, when a child is born or a family member is sick, in most states companies do not have to grant extended paid time off. Robert Skaggs, from Rancho Cucamonga, has four children, including a young daughter fighting

cancer and an infant son with heart defects. He said parents MUST be able to afford to spend those critical weeks with their loved ones.

“That time of transition is absolutely critical for a parent to be there - fathers and mothers,” Skaggs said. “There’s no substitute for your presence.”

Skaggs said his employer allowed him unpaid time off.

While in the nation’s capital, the group will deliver petitions with 36,000 signatures asking Congress to make family-leave legislation

a priority. California is one of seven states to offer partial salary replacement with paid family leave - but millions, including those working in the gig economy, are not eligible.

Salvador Guillermo is a father of two from the City of Orange who works as an independent contractor, so he was not able to take advantage of the state familyleave program and ended up taking time off unpaid.

Nationwide, 114 million people have no access to paid family leave. Out of 193 countries in the United Nations, only a small handful do not have a national paid parental leave law: New

Guinea, Suriname, a few South Pacific island nations and the United States.

Historic Congressional Hearing Targets Big Oil’s Climate Denial

By Desert Star Staff WASHINGTON – The first ever congressional hearing on Big Oil’s history of climate denial is Wednesday.

Led by Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., and co-chaired by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., the hearing aims to show that more than 40 years ago, oil industry research proved that burning fossil fuels harms the environment, but that oil companies, including ExxonMobil, misled the public about those results to keep profits up.

And according to Richard Wiles, executive director of the Center for Climate Integrity, the oil companies maintained a multi-million dollar publicity campaign to undermine the science.

“They know they’re making a product that’s going to cause big problems,” Wiles points out. “They do it anyway. They lie about it – and then, in the end, with climate, they want the public to pay for all of

the damages, and all of the adaptation and preparedness that we’re going to need to do for climate change.”

ExxonMobil says it hasn’t done anything wrong and its officials dismiss reports of its climate denial as the work of anti-fossil fuel activists.

The hearing starts the day after ExxonMobil went on trial in New York for securities fraud, and for minimizing global warming risks to investors.

And it comes two days after a new report, “America Misled,” offers new details comparing oil industry deception about climate change to the tobacco industry’s cover-up of the health effects of smoking.

Wiles says another issue likely to come up at the hearing is how people of color and low-income communities are hit hardest by global warming.

“It’s people that have suffered the most from the damages of any of the climate-juiced hurricanes,”
