PIPPIN is Broadway’s high-flying, death-defying hit musical! Full of extraordinary acrobatics & magical feats The opening-night audience for “Pippin” at the Pantages was blown away by the vibrant new presentation. The original production of the show, directed by Bob Fosse, premiered on Broadway in 1972 at the Imperial Theatre and ran for 1944 performances, closing in 1977. It received numerous Tony nominations, and Ben Vereen

garnered a Tony for Best Actor in a musical with Bob Fosse winning the coveted award for his direction and choreography. Actor John Rubinstein created the role of Pippin in the original Broadway production, and now he returns to the show in the role of Charles, Pippin’s father. Two-time Emmy and Tony winner Andrea Martin stars as

Berthe, Pippin’s delightful, earthy grandmother, a role that earned her the 2013 Tony Award. Her hilarious, zestful number “No Time at All” was a showstopper. On opening night the audience gave her a cheering standing ovation after her amazing performance. Not only does she sing and make you laugh; she was outstanding as an aerial artist. Decision 2014

Coachella Valley Residents Preparing for Election Day By Angela Monroe Decision 2014 is upon us with Election Day just a little more than a week away on November 4th. From federal, to state and local seats-- there are many important races this November election including governor, attorney general and local representatives. Republican Brian Nestande is running against incumbent Raul Ruiz for Congress. Another closely watched race is for State Senate former Assemblywoman Bonnie Garcia

versus Supervisor Jeff Stone. “I’m actually taking an interest in all of them, I’m an independent and I try very hard not to vote along party lines, and I try to select a person that I think can actually do the job,” said Palm Desert resident, David Grice. Most cities in the Coachella Valley also have elected officials on the ballot. Depending on where you live you will also find local measures including sales and marijuana taxes in Desert Hot Springs, to transient occupancy

tax hikes and school bonds in Palm Desert. “Measure KK is absolutely the most important thing on my plate as a school administrator for Desert Sands,” said David Gustafson of Palm Desert. You will find six statewide propositions on your ballot including a 7.5 billion dollar water bond for Prop 1 to Prop 45 and 46 which address health care, and Prop 47 which could change criminal sentencing. “45 and 46 I guess are the ones that have gotten my attention, and I’m trying to

would have been delighted if she had done an encore, but no such luck. It was also great fun to be able to sing along with her whenever the chorus lyrics were projected overhead. This all-new production of Roger O. Hirson and Stephen Schwartz’s “Pippin” is directed by Tony Award winner Diane Paulus and features choreography

by Tony Award nominee Chet Walker in the style of Bob Fosse and circus creation by Gypsy Snider of the Montreal-based circus company “Les 7 doigts de la main” (also known as 7 Fingers). The result is a blend of Broadway and cirque excellence that left the audience in awe and Continues on Page 11

Story and Photos by Pat Krause Angel View held its annual Sale, Fashion Show and Luncheon on October 23 at Cuistot Restaurant on El Paseo in Palm Desert. The theme this year was Hollywood Glamour, and many of the guests dressed as their favorite movie star. A Marilyn Moroe impersonator, Cat Lyn Day greeted guests on the red Carpet as they arrived. The day started early at 10 in the morning for ladies to shop for some of the most beautiful fashions from the Angel View Thrift stores donations. A dressing room was supplied for the ladies to try on their purchases. The items included jewelry, shoes, purses, dresses, suits, coats, pants and tops in all price ranges. There was something there for everyone of all types, ages and sizes. This is a really fun shopping day. There was a large Silent Auction of donated items by local businesses. A raffle was held that included Wine, BBQ, Chocolate and Coffee baskets. Elegant attire from some of the top names in fashion was worn by the models during the Fashion Show. The models walked all through Cuistot Restaurant so the ladies could view the fashions that could be purchased that day. The emcee for the day was Lee Ames who had fallen off his Horse the day before and had many stitches in his arm. A true actor as he knows the show must go on. Models were Joanie Neighbors, Jill Hayes, Francoise Rhodes, LaVoris Dias, Betty Francis, May Silverman and the lone gentleman model were David Miller, who model’s men’s clothing every year. Fashions included St. John, Versace, Tommy Bahama, Calvin Klein, Scala, Vintage and many others at greatly reduced prices. This is a nice shopping experience where you can buy a designer garment for less than half the price in the stores.

a home in Southern California was $413,000. That’s down from earlier this year but higher than 2013. Overall, prices are up about 9% for those six counties (Los Angeles, Riverside, San Diego, Ventura, San Bernardino and Orange) since 2013. This is a dramatic slowdown from the rebound pace of 20% + in 2012 & 2013. The rebound in prices was welcome news but now it looks like things may be settling back into a more normal price cycle. Even a 9% appreciation rate is likely not sustainable over the long term. The pace of home sales has also fallen just about as quickly as the price appreciation. Pricing and sales of existing homes has slowed much more than sales of newly constructed home. The reasons are very simple. There are fewer foreclosed homes in the market. That means inventory is much more stable and there aren’t as many homes with extremely discounted prices. Many experts are calling for home values and sales to continue slowing. This isn’t great news for sellers and it’s not particularly good news for buyers either. Wages are not climbing as fast as homes have appreciated. In fact the US has

By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Dear Kelly: I purchased my condo last year. As of this year, I suddenly started hearing my upstairs neighbor’s footsteps when he walks across his condo (sounds like heavy footsteps). I also hear creaks and cracking that can be attributed to a hardwood or similar flooring. My CC&Rs state that upper units only permit carpeting and vinyl flooring. I suspect my neighbor has installed some sort of flooring other than the approved carpet/ vinyl. The problem is that I’m not 100% sure of this. Is there anything that I can do? Thanks, P.K., San Diego Dear Kelly: My wife and have lived on the ground floor of a three story condo building for nearly 17 years. We never heard noise from our previous upstairs

Pricing has slowed too. The time it takes to sell an existing home continues to grow. Something I’ve written about in the past remains a problem in housing and that’s many potential buyers are still unable to obtain credit. It’s a failure of the Fed and economic policy for the past six years. Banks simply are not making enough loans and there is no incentive from the government for them to change

their approach. As crazy as it sounds, higher interest rates may actually lead to banks making more loans since they can do so at higher rates. Credit standards definitely need to be adjusted to help keep the meager growth we’re seeing in the economy inching upwards. seen wage stagnation across the country for more than a decade. Many potential home buyers are finding that they can’t afford to purchase a new home even with still record low home mortgage rates. neighbors. When the upstairs unit sold, our new neighbors installed a new hardwood floor, and we can hear every footstep booming through our ceilings. I asked our HOA board if our upstairs neighbors submitted an application for architectural approval before they remodeled. I was told that an application is not required for interior remodeling. It sounds to me like our upstairs neighbors did not install any acoustic insulation between the subfloor and the hardwood floor. Doesn’t the HOA board have some responsibility to make sure that architectural modifications are done in compliance with building codes? I’m sure that our neighbor is violating acoustical standards. Best Regards, J. N., Whittier Dear P.K. and J.N.: Condominiums are essentially an apartment which you own, and are built under the same basic building code requirements as apartments. Therefore, although most homebuyers expect their condominium to be quieter than an apartment, it might not be. Wood frame buildings are hard to soundproof between floors, and installing hard flooring can create problems for neighbors underneath. Some developers October 29, 2014

have wisely included CC&R restrictions regarding such floors, either banning them, limiting them over sleeping rooms, or including minimum sound buffering standards. Unfortunately, a very large percentage of condominium buildings, new and old, do not have noise limiting restrictions, and so neighbors can innocently create problems for neighbors below when they install such floors without sound suppression measures. This frequently creates major disputes, as one homeowner’s often expensive upgrade to the appearance of their home makes their neighbor’s home noisier. Multi-story (“apartment style”) wood frame building condominium associations need restrictions on hard floors, protecting neighbors from creating a nuisance to other neighbors. Such a restriction is best included in the CC&Rs, which require a membership vote to amend. Owners of existing hard floors can be “grandfathered,” but should be warned they still are at risk of noise complaints and should consider modifying their floors to be quieter. In P.K.’s situation, the board and neighbor should be contacted to confirm if the floor was changed. Owners of hard (and

noisy) floors in associations without such a restriction are not protected. The neighbor below might complain or even sue, claiming the unreasonable intrusion of noise into their home is a nuisance. These conflicts are always very unpleasant, and neighbors should try hard to avoid them. I am told by acoustic experts (who help associations create standards) it is practically impossible in a wood building to make completely quiet floors, so association standards and resident expectations must be balanced and reasonable. Protection of Personal Information

By Janice Gough Some of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) exchanges may have obvious holes in the security measures they use to protect federal tax information and finding those holes may take the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) years. Officials at the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) -- a watchdog agency that keeps tabs on the IRS -- have published information about the steps the state-based exchanges are

using to protect tax information in a new report. The state-based exchanges are using the tax information to verify exchange users’ identities and to verify whether the users’ qualified for the new PPACA premium subsidies or PPACA cost-sharing reduction subsidies. One thing the TIGTA officials have done is show just how much tax information the IRS is sending to the exchange system. The IRS sent about 23 million tax information reports during the first annual PPACA exchange open enrollment period, from October 2013 through March 2014. About 13 million of the reports went to the HealthCare.gov system at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The rest went to state exchange. Why should you care about how the exchanges protect tax information? Hackers could figure out some creative way to use the office of the nearest public exchange to tap the IRS taxpayer information databases. So, what could some (or many) of the exchanges done wrong?

1. Some exchange programs were too poorly run to be able to give TIGTA a “plan of action and milestones (POA&M) report that TIGTA could use in its own report. TIGTA analysts got POA&Ms from HHS to create a chart showing how many state-based exchanges had which kind of open data security weaknesses as of Oct. 1, 2013. The analysts found, for example, that eight states had problems with identification and authentication, and seven had problems with identifier management. But TIGTA could use only 11 POA&Ms in the chart ... because it could get POA&Ms for only 11 exchanges. Five other exchanges had none. 2. Exchanges’ may not have gotten top managers to sign the required security authorizations. Top exchange managers are supposed to show that they have thought long and hard about the seriousness of taking in personal tax information, and thought long and hard about security controls, by signing authorization forms. The exchanges didn’t have to send the signed forms to the IRS, but they were supposed to have

USDA to Visit PS Unified

the signed forms in their offices. In real life, the exchange offices TIGTA officials visited in person -- in California and Connecticut -- could not show the officials the signed forms. Because top exchange officials had not signed the forms, the IRS had no proof that a top exchange manager had assessed and accepted the risks of any controls not yet in place when the exchange went live, TIGTA officials say. 3. The IRS could take as long as three years to do on-site testing of the security systems at some exchanges. The Office of Safeguards at the IRS conducted on-site test of three of the 16 state-based exchanges within the first six months of operation, and three more exchanges by June 2014. But the schedule in place when TIGTA started doing its report gave the IRS three years to review all of the exchanges, even though the Internal Revenue Manual suggests that entities receiving tax information for the first time should be reviewed within the first year after starting to get the information. 4. TIGTA notes at one point, in a discussion of why having on-site inspections of the exchanges would be a good idea, that, at one exchange, testing “revealed a serious weakness related to remote access requiring prompt action.TIGTA leaves the exact nature of that “serious weakness to the imagination. Elaine And I Are Getting Married By Art Kunkin The Life Extension Alchemist How’s that for a headline? Elaine and I have been happily living together for the last seven years, and I woke up last Monday morning thinking “Why not have the benefits of being legal!” So I immediately proposed, she said, “Yes!” and I called Lou Gerhardt, asking him if he would marry us at his next Thursday meeting. He agreed, so if you want to come to our wedding, it’s going to take place at Lou’s “Tough-Minded Optimist” meeting, from 10am to 11am in the church auditorium on Onaga about 50 feet East of Church Street in Yucca Valley. No gifts are requested or required. Just your presence and smile of approval are enough! I expect the ceremony will be short and simple, as is Lou’s style, with the rest of the hour as relaxed and informative as usual. I’m 86 years young, and Elaine is much younger (no more

details about that, of course). Both of us have been in long relationships before, and this one will probably last forever since my 44 years of research in the ancient science of Alchemy lead me to believe that I know how to prevent normal death. Elaine, not so incidentally, does not agree with me on the wisdom of extending life this much. However, I am making this very strong statement about life extension here because I would like to share my insights and research with everyone who is interested. Please do talk with me about this as soon as possible or email me at artkunkin@gmail.com with the word “Alchemy” in the subject line. I may teach a class on life extension when there is enough interest. My purpose in writing this is to let you know that I am also preparing a powerful way to present my ideas about why and how we should end death. This will happen through a daily email program available by subscription. I have purchased the domain name www.dailycoaching.us and am setting up a website with that name to organize this daily email program. This web site, www. dailycoaching.us, will give me the space to fully explain this valuable program. Then the daily emails themselves will consist of

two or three sentences detailing the daily actions you can take to live for a minimum of hundreds of years. I anticipate having a free trial where there might be only one email a week sent to a trial subscriber. This would provide an easy introduction to the simple procedure that will lead to extending your life far beyond the normal life span. However, the real key to this incredible result requires repetition every day of the same simple set of actions. That is the reason for publishing a daily coaching email. I believe that I can make these daily coaching emails available for the low price of perhaps ten cents a day or $3 per month. However, as more people subscribe to these daily coaching emails, there will be need for a paid staff of people to service the subscribers. I do think I can get enough subscribers to keep the costs down. Ten cents a day is a very small price to pay for the results that are anticipated. If you can look forward to living a very, very long and very, very healthy life, there are many productive and profitable things you will be able to do that you cannot look forward to accomplishing now. So please get in touch with me at the wedding to put your name on the free mailing list for more information. In a few

days, you will be able to email me at artkunkin@dailycoaching. us or at the web site www. dailycoaching.us. Meanwhile send your information to me at artkunkin@gmail.com with the word “Alchemy” in the subject line. Good luck! Art Kunkin is the 86 yearyoung journalist who published and edited the alternative weekly newspaper The Los Angeles Free Press starting in 1964, later becoming president of the Philosophical Research Society. He currently is a member of the Advisory Board of The Institute of Mentalphysics, also known as the Joshua Tree Retreat Center. Please see his new website, www.dailycoaching.us to have Art send you the daily coaching emails with the personalized life extension information. You can receive a free trial subscription to these daily emails by sending him your email address at artkunkin@ gmail.com. Please put “Alchemy” in the subject line. (However, I must report again that I have not had a single email response to this note. Is anyone really reading this column? Nevertheless, as an indication that this column is really being read, several dozen people have said “hello” to me on the street in recent weeks, saying they enjoy reading the information!? Please do write me). Copyright 2014 by Art Kunkin, All Rights Reserved.

Learn How to Save Energy & Money By Desert Star Staff The Coachella Valley Association of Governments (CVAG) Green for Life program is hosting a FREE self-guided tour showcasing some of the greenest buildings throughout the desert on Saturday November 15th from 10:00am to 3:00pm. Participants will be able to see firsthand a wide array of green homes built with a focus on energy efficiency, water conservation and sustainable design. Information about the tour is available to download on CVAG’s Green for Life website www.GreenforLifeCV.org. Tour participants will receive a map of the properties with descriptions of the green features prior to the tour and can visit the properties anytime between 10 am and 3 pm on November 15th. Each

tour location will also feature a green home kit that includes information and tips on how to save energy, water and money at home or work. Two-thirds of consumers are now paying attention to green homes and green building, recognizing the link between green features, cost savings and more comfortable living. Green homes are also healthier, last longer, conserve more energy and have a much smaller environmental footprint than conventional homes. C VA G ’s G re e n f o r Life program offers a comprehensive guide on all the various ways you can green your building. And the new CV Upgrade program makes going green even easier by offering home improvement financing through Ygrene Energy Fund

(www.CleanEnergyCVUpgrade. com). New roofs, insulation and ductwork, doors and windows, heaters and air conditioners, solar panels, water heaters, pool pumps, water irrigation and much more can all be 100% financed with no money down and low monthly payments. Studies show that improved buildings with green features have lower energy-related operating costs, enhanced property values and increased occupancy and lease rates. Desert Hot Springs Working on Medical Marijuana Rules By Angela Monroe DESERT HOT SPRINGS -The city of Desert Hot Springs is preparing to allow medical marijuana dispensaries to operate in the city, but they are still debating some of the details. The city council is still working on how many dispensaries to allow in the city, and how to award the businesses a permit. The final vote was continued until next Tuesday night. The city’s been struggling with an on-going financial crisis and has been looking at several options to generate revenue. Desert Hot Springs has two measures on the

November ballot for taxing medical marijuana. Two weeks ago, the Desert Hot Springs city council voted unanimously to repeal its previous ban on the shops. They adopted an ordinance that will permit medical marijuana dispensaries in any commercial zone within the city. The dispensaries will be able to cultivate up to 99 mature plants on the property. Tuesday they did a second reading of the ordinance, but delayed the vote. They are deciding on whether to allow between three to five dispensaries, and looking at a point system to approve the shops.

This will make Desert Hot Springs the third city in the valley to allow medical marijuana October 29, 2014

Diva Paquita Barrio Sings Latin & Blues Lyrics Paquita sings folk ballads using guitars and horns just like Queen of Blues Etta James did. By Carolyn W. Gaines Cabazon, Ca.- On October 25, 2014, on a cool perfect, Saturday evening at the Morongo Casino Resort the talented, sophisticated, superstar-songbird, Paquita La Del Barrio, a Mexican-singer who specializes in rancheras since the 1970s. She stepped on stage to lock her Latinos Desert Fans into a lovely, one night, distinctive, collections of Spanish Lyrics the same as Blues Lyrics. What a treat! Her young ten-piece Mariachi Orchestra stood behind the vocalist whose attire was a red, silver gown with sparkling designs flashing, and silver shoes. The Crooner’s super powerful vocals had the crowd’s singing, screaming and listening to their old and new favorites. The Soloist-Paquita sang the popular 1970’s Mexican song of Lupita D’alessio translated into English Lyrics were “I Swear; I Won’t Be Back, and I’m Going To Leave You This Knee Pad.” Those Lyrics caused her fans to make hilarious laughter and extremely funny loud noises. Barrio has an exceedingly famous line called, “Listen To Me; You Useless Thing.” Paquita’s fans were chatting out loudly that she was very funny throughout her concert. Fans kept screaming to the top of their voices and singing along. The Giant Star made her fans tremendously happy.

She had begun dancing and singing to her very own Lyrics called, “If Your Thang Fells Give It To The Cat.” Paquita’s fans were taking pictures on their cell phones and singing while taking pictures of the Star. It was amazing that she did not ask her fans to stop flashing their cell phone cameras. Paquita was very nice and loving to her fans. She sang, “I Cheated On You More Than Three Times, and I Don’t Want To See You No More,” If this is not Blues Lyrics, what is Latin Lyrics? Paquita’s Lyrics are comparable to Legendary Blues Singer Bobby Rush’s Lyrics: “If You Think, I’m Gone Leave My Woman Because Of What Somebody Said” from his hit album called,”I Ain’t Studdin’ You.’’ The Latino singer made conscious contact to tell her fans that they are very special. She said,” Thank You, For All the Love, You Gave Me And All Of My Songs.” That moment just took my soul away, and I knew that I was writing about another Mega Star once again. Finally, the end is near: The Legendary Latin Diva sang her hit song called ‘’TwoLegged Rat’’ with a flashing picture of a Cat with a Banjo. This Joking song sent her fans into uttering shrieks and screeching farce. Paquita De La Barrio controversial Lyrics and her feminist style of singing earned her the rights to belt out tales of being dumped and encourage women to stand

up for themselves. Paquita Barrio answered Two Questions for my Desert Star Newspaper Write Up: These are the same Questions I ask, “The King of Blues” B.B. King, Floyd Mayweather Sr. Oscar Del La Hoya, Blues Diva Shemekia Copeland, Blues-GuitaristsSingers Eric Johnson, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Guitar Shorty, Bobby Rush, and Roy Gaines in their interview. Question One: What message could you send to our youth of today. Who are

not Listening and Learning, how to perform Latin and Blues Music? Paquita: To all young people, I want to say that Latin Music is beautiful and much of the music is what their parents listened to when they fell in love. Hopefully, They have the opportunity to continue listening to it, that it is ours and what expresses our feelings with this temperament that characterizes us latinos. Additionally, tell them that their friend, Paquita la del Barrio loves them!

Question Two: From her Desert Hot Springs Fan Ismel: Other than our beautiful weather year round, What brings you back to perform in the desert and time and time again? Paquita: I Love to come out here to see all of my fans, spreading the message for all women who don’t dare talk back to their evildoer men when they need to hear the truth. We are very excited to be there with my Mariachi-Band celebrating with all of you.

Grace Robbins, local author says, “The Body Deli knows how to make sense out of scents!” You can also find Body Deli products at the Whole Foods Market recently opened in Palm Desert. That’s where you will as well find Brandini Toffee, another desert original. Follow their ‘toffee trail’ and you will find the newest Brandini Toffee shop at 132 S. The $20 dinners for two have soared in popularity thanks to loyal patrons such as Jim Dunn. “ Every week the dinner menu changes, last week the fourcourse dinner featured a lettuce-wedge-style salad with bacon, tomato and blue cheese dressing, and roasted vegetables to accompany a generous serving of chicken Alfredo. This week the main course is beef stroganoff,” he said while readying for the dessert, a round powered sugar cookie. The Body Deli, Brandini Toffee and Cello’s Pantry, all locally owned are attracting locals and tourists with menus that are anything but predictable! Happy 10th Birthday, Morongo! By Desert Star Staff MORONGO CASINO, RESORT & SPA, CA – A monthlong birthday bash is coming to the Morongo Casino, Resort & Spa this December to celebrate the casino’s 10th anniversary. To mark the momentous occasion, the Morongo Casino, Resort & Spa has lined up a full month of special events and programs to thank its guests. The thrilling promotions include exciting concerts from such blockbuster artists as Sublime and Chris Young, commemorative 10th anniversary collector’s chips, new car giveaways, hotel discounts and dining specials. “Our 10th anniversary is a major milestone, and we intend to celebrate in style,” Morongo Tribal Chairman Robert Martin said. “Our casino sparked an economic and cultural renaissance for our tribe and the surrounding region. We’re proud of the economic benefits and

thousands of jobs it has brought to the Inland region, and we’re inviting our guests to join our birthday celebration.” As part of the celebration, Morongo has commissioned three beautiful new commemorative chips recognizing the casino’s 10th anniversary milestone. Set in denominations of $5, $25 and $100, the collector chips are emblazoned with an image of the Morongo Casino, Resort & Spa tower rising in the night sky against a spray of colorful fireworks. “These special collector chips are absolutely gorgeous, and are just one example of how we’re pulling out all the stops in December,” Morongo Chief Operating Officer John James said. “Music, meal deals, souvenirs, $10 buffet dinners and spa treatments for Winners Club members, plus lots of surprises. Every day will feature something new and exciting.”

By Jack Lyons Theatre & Film Critic If Neil Simon is the playwright with the greatest number of smash comedy plays on Broadway (over 30) Mel Brooks is surely the nuttiest, wackiest, and supremely mulitalented playwright/actor - with huge successes on Broadway from “The Producers” (1968) to “Young Frankenstein” (1974). And while we’re at it let’s throw in the movies “Blazing Saddles”, (1974) “High Anxiety”, his spoof of the Alfred Hitchcock’s suspense thriller “Pyscho” (1977), and dozens of movies and TV shows. Brooks and Simon were prodigious writers in their heyday. The likes we’ll probably not see again. Besides, we’re in a different time period, in a different culture, with different priorities. Kudos to the Palm Canyon Theatre for reviving one of

Brook’ classic tales turned into a bawdy farce/musical, where director Steve Fisher faithfully recreates all of Brooks’ sly and witty innuendos and asides concerning, then current, TV show references, celebrities of the day and some of their foibles, which in short, makes the libretto a hoot. Brooks, Fisher, and the cast don’t miss anything in this hilarious overthe-top production. The story, such as it is, based on the Mary Shelley horror novel “Frankenstein”, is so dense and well known it defies reducing it to a couple of sentences. However, to give the uninitiated a sense of what takes place on the stage, don’t over analyze it. It’s Transylvania, as Mel Brooks envisions it. Need I say more? Just accept and enjoy the silliness and fun of it all. “Young Frankenstein”

Commitment along with 100% dedication and belief in the characters they’re playing is what makes the entire production work, no matter how silly the on stage action is. When they believe it, we believe it. Making sure we do, indeed, believe it, Fisher has assembled a solid cast of principal stars which include: Ben Reece as Dr. Frederick Frankenstein, Tom Warrick as the wily and madcap Igor, Katie Pavao as Inga, the nurse assistant to Dr. Frankenstein who sports, not only a lovely voice, but a most convincing German accent, and a real flair for comedy/farce, Denise Carey as the beautiful, October 29, 2014

Funny as the production is, every musical needs its ensemble performers and the technical support people necessary to pull off the on stage shenanigans. The Palm Canyon Theatre’s resident Set Design wizard J.W. Layne has his multi-set locations large enough to accommodate singers and dancers and

their routines, including tap; choreographed by resident Choreographer Heidi Hapner. In addition, Layne has a few special effects to dazzle the audience. However, I overheard a couple of patrons mention during the intermission, there was too much atmospheric smoke for the first three rows. The effect, however, produced minor throat discomfort. Jennifer Stowe’s costumes are functional and visually striking, especially those worn by Denise Carey and Katy Pavao. The “movable humps” in Igor’s costume always get a laugh. “Young Frankenstein” runs at the Palm Canyon Theatre in Palm Springs through November 2nd. ‘Pippin’ at Pantages Has Pizazz Continued from Page 1 delight as performers leapt from pole to pole or flew overhead via trapeze or flowing cloth ribbons. They also did elaborate tumbles and acrobatics, performed balancing feats, juggled and jumped through hoops with the greatest of ease. Matthew James Thomas, who originated the role of Pippin in the current 2013 Tony Award winning revival, performs the title role with gusto. Not only does he sing and dance; he has a flair for comedy and acrobatics. Sasha Allen (a finalist on the 4th season of NBC’s “The Voice”) stars as “Leading Player” and Sabrina Harper, original Broadway revival cast, is Fastrada. Basically, Pippin is the fanciful story of a young prince who embarks on a death-defying journey to find meaning in his life. Will he choose a happy but simple life or will he risk everything for a singular flash of glory? The musical is filled with countless Broadway standards that include “Magic to Do,” which opens the show, “Corner of the Sky,” “Glory,” “No Time at All,” “Morning Glow” and “Love Song.” If you loved the original production you will enjoy this revised adventure even more with its spectacular staging and amazing circus acts. Great fun for the family to share. The opening-night audience included Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Sean Hayes (TVs “Will and Grace”). This Tony Award-Winning hit Broadway musical revival has definitely found its “Corner of the Sky” here in Los Angeles and will continue to do so wherever it travels across the U.S. Tickets for “Pippin” are

available online at www. HollywoodPantages.com or www.Ticketmaster.com, by phone at 800-982-2787 or at the Hollywood Pantages Box Office located at 6233 Hollywood Blvd. The show runs for three weeks only, ending November 9th. Walmart in Hot Water Over ‘Fat Girl’ Halloween Costume Section By Desert Star Staff American retail giant Walmart has apologized after a collection of Halloween outfits available for sale on its website were branded as “Fat Girl Costumes.” The store first made waves on Monday this week when it was discovered that a rather insensitive label had apparently ended up being applied to a page of adult plus-size costumes being sold ahead of Halloween. Critics quickly lashed out at the company and took to social media to voice their complaints, in turn putting Walmart in the peculiar position of having to apologize after “Fat Girl Costumes” became a trending topic among Twitter users. The company has since said they’re sorry for the gaffe, but not before being berated on the internet and ending up the topic of articles published by the likes of Time, People, CNN and

others. “Let’s start taking bets on how long it’ll be until the Fat Girl section disappears and we’re subjected to a totally sincere apology from a retail giant who really really cares,” Jezebel, one of the first e-outlets to report the issue, speculated early Monday. Soon after, Walmart did in fact circulate an apology. “This never should have been on our site,” a spokesperson for Walmart, Ravi Jariwala, told ABC News. “It is unacceptable, and we apologize.” The headline has since been scrapped from the site, and Jariwala said the company is working to “ensure this never happens again.” According to Jezebel, however, insensitive product descriptions on the retailer’s website didn’t die with the removal of the “Fat Girl Costumes” tag. “Walmart, God bless them, has something to offend just about everyone,” Anna Merlan wrote for the Site. “[I]f being called fat isn’t quite your speed, why not peruse one of these racist American Indian parody outfits? Or this entire selection of “Gypsy” costumes? Or, returning to fatness, this super witty and sophisticated Fat Tinkerbell getup for men? The description reads “Tinkerbell really let herself go since she has been out of work for so many years!” Get it? Get it? Sigh.”

Race for State Senate: Bonnie Garcia Vs Jeff Stone

By Angela Monroe Voters will decide November 4th on the heated race of Bonnie Garcia versus Jeff Stone. Jeff Stone currently is serving a 3rd term on the Riverside County Board of Supervisors, before that he served on the Temecula City Council and owns multiple businesses. Bonnie Garcia served six years in the State Assembly. She worked for two state senators, and also worked for both a Democrat and Republican governor. Bonnie Garcia and Jeff Stone are Republicans vying for the new 28th State Senate District. We asked both candidates

what bill they would author first. “I think the first thing we need in the state of California is an economic recovery plan, and I do have a plan in great detail in how we can lower tax, how we can lower regulations on businesses, how we can lower tuitions for our kids,” said Stone. “The first bill that I would be tackling is expanding access so our community colleges can have four year degree programs, creating a permanent campus for UCR Riverside and working with our business partners to create career paths for our students,” said Garcia. Equally telling can be what they think should not be a bill.

“Nothing that increases taxes, nothing that increases regulatory structures in California, you know the small business is really the backbone, the economic engine for the state of California and every time we throw in obstacles, we slow down job growth, we slow down our economy,” said Garcia. “We have a carbon credit AB32 and SB375 that we have hidden tax that is going to be imposed on our residents, they don’t know it, but on January the 1st the price of gasoline could go up by 50 to 75 cents a gallon,” said Stone. Though they are both Republicans, this race hasn’t

been friendly. “It’s disappointing that my opponent has resorted to attack ads,” said Garcia. “My opponent has wanted to do a smear campaign, significant character assassination,” said Stone. We asked for the final pitch: Why residents should vote for Garcia or Stone for State Senate. “Because he’s a family man, he’s an honest man, he’s a guy who doesn’t need this job to make a living, he really wants to give back to society, the common denominator of being a pharmacist and elected official is helping people. And I love all people, irrespective of their

race, their color, their creed, their sexual orientation. I want to be there to help people, and I think this is my opportunity now,” said Stone. “Bonnie Garcia is a mom that raised her kids in a military and law enforcement family, this is where I called home for the last 29 years, and I’m proud to say I’m raising my grandchildren here. And I am looking for an opportunity to help every family rise with the tide,” said Garcia. KMIR will continue to provide election coverage tune in Tuesday night for the race for Congress between Incumbent Raul Ruiz and Assemblyman Brian Nestande.

S P O RT S DVL, De Anza League Realignment in the Works BY DANIEL MARINELLI

Coachella Valley – Last week, the athletic directors from the De Anza and Desert Valley Leagues met with the CIF (California Interscholastic conference) Southern Section commissioner Rob Wigod to discuss merging the leagues into a super conference. The schools hope that realignment would benefit the interests of all schools and create a more competitive balance. Though nothing is set in stone, the merge would begin at the start of the 2016-2017 school year. The committee has come up with a few ideas but two plans stand out as favorites. The first is to simply combine all the schools from both leagues into a 14-team super conference and then have two, seven-team subdivisions. The divisions would be split into an upper division and a lower division. The teams that finish in the top seven stay in the upper division and the teams that finish in the in the bottom seven stay in the lower division. Every two years, the committee will sit down and reevaluate which teams stay in the top and bottom divisions. “Lets say a team that plays in the ‘A’ league in football might play in the ‘B’ league in basketball so there is competitive equity,” La Quinta High School AD and head football coach Dan Armstrong said. “A school would not necessarily be in the same league for every sport, in fact, it

could be different in every single sport. That way, you don’t have the super powers always beating up on the small schools – just more competitive.” For example, Indio High School might be in the upper division for baseball but the lower division for football. The second idea would take all seven teams in the DVL (La Quinta, Palm Desert, Indio, Cathedral City, Indio, Xavier Prep and Coachella Valley) and would incorporate the four desert teams from the De Anza (Desert Hot Springs, Shadow Hills, Desert Mirage and Rancho Mirage), creating an 11-team conference. The De Anza’s Yucca Valley, Big Bear and Twentynine Palms would then join a league with teams closer to the Inland Empire like Banning and Beaumont. The framework of the realignment is in still in the infant stages with ample committee meetings left before the issue gets resolved. There are some concerns from the De Anza ADs, however, with the growth of the schools in the desert cities, some form of restructuring is inevitable. “I think (something will change),” Armstrong said. “The De Anza League does not want Shadow Hills and Rancho Mirage. They know those schools are going to outgrow them. One way or another, those two schools are probably going to come into our league. Even if we became just a ten team DVL,

I still like that idea of having two leagues within our league so we can help out these other schools because some of the schools are hurting.” Conference realignment like this is a huge deal and will probably affect other leagues in the Southern Section, in addition to playoff seeding. Though the leagues will rearrange, there are some questions that must be answered. Will both the lower and upper divisions be vying for the same championship? If not,

how do the student-athletes get encouraged to compete? Will the lower league still play teams in the upper league? Will inferior teams competing against each other actually improve teams year-to-year?

DesertSTAR

We brought you live coverage this morning on both KMIR and our sister station, KPSE. If you missed it, KPSE will rebroadcast the special Saturday, November 1st at 7am. The 6k event benefits “United Way of the Desert” on make a difference day. KMIR staff was there! Gino LaMont, Janet Zappala and Gloria

Rodriguez hosted the race live and Thalia Hayden ran the event! People from ages 4 to 91 participated in the challenge and had many inspiring stories to share. Just like that, with the sound of the air horn from KMIR’s Gino LaMont, the twenty-ninth annual tram road challenge was under way. Nearly two thousand October 29, 2014

participants ran, jogged or walked three point seven miles up two thousand six hundred and fortythree feet of elevation. Men, woman and children of all ages and walks of life made their way to the to the starting line from all over the world. The tram road challenge is certainly a battle of endurance. For some, it’s a fun way to get fit with friends and for others it had more personal meaning.”This year “ Donna Palivos of Palm Desert lost 120 lbs to be able to take part in her first tram road challenge. She’s says that losing the weight gave her the confidence she needed. KMIR brought live coverage of the race throughout the morning and plenty. Patrick Parsel of South Lake Tahoe was the first to cross the finish line at 29 minutes and 13 seconds, just beating his brother andrew who came in second at 30 minutes and 22 seconds Andrew says, “that with more rest and experience, next years

outcome may be a little different.” Iron man bill bell showed of his impressive endurance by crossing the finish line at 91 years young. Whether participants tried to be the first to cross the finish line or just enjoy a stroll up the mountain, everyone had a lot of fun. “Woohoo!!!” And after all the excitement of the tram road challenge, many headed over for the awards ceremony to cool down. A health fair was held at “Desert Regional Medical Center” after the 6k event. The first three male and female finishers in each category were honored in a ceremony. And every participant was given a medal, shirt and a free breakfast. KMIR will re-air the “entire” tram road challenge special that broadcast this morning next Saturday, from 7am to 8:30am on our sister station, K-P-S-E. Source: KMIR www.desertstarweekly.com

“Freud’s Last Session” Triumphs By Jack Lyons Theatre & Film Critic At last, a thinking person’s play about the vexing concepts and issues concerning the philosophy of science versus the philosophy of faith in today’s society. It wasn’t much of an issue, say, 5000 years ago. Then again, there wasn’t much of a scientific community or advocates to challenge the established order. But, today it’s a much different kettle of fish. Playwright Mark St. Germain has crafted “Freud’s Last Session” – brilliantly staged and directed by North Coast Rep Theatre artistic director David Ellenstein – in order to bring together, one afternoon in 1940, two of the 20th century’s most influential writers and thinkers in a head to head spirited discussion. The story in short, is set in WW II England, during the Blitz of London and revolves around a fictional meeting between Sigmund Freud and novelist C.S. Lewis. Near the end of his life, Freud has one final visitor, C.S. Lewis, the writer and former atheist now a convert to Roman Catholicism who is soon to publish “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe”. The two men are a contrast in styles. Freud (wonderfully played by Michael Santo) is irascible, highly opinionated, prickly and suffering from painful mouth cancer. Lewis (an introspective, low key Bruce Turk) is a glasshalf-full, sunny outlook sort of a fellow and is unflappable most of the time. The result of their meeting is a lively debate touching on love, religion, politics and life in its many iterations. Of course, the most spirited exchanges between polar-opposite philosophies inevitably boil down to either politics or religion or both as in our modern-day society. Despite one’s position on the issues, it’s a stimulating, thought-provoking, amusing, and engaging evening of theatre. And it all takes place in about 85 minutes. D i re c t o r E l l e n s t e i n ’s

entertaining production has two extremely talented actors in Santo and Turk, plus an erudite, richly-textured, intelligent premise and script from playwright St. Germain with which to have fun, as well as to tantalize his sophisticated theatre audience. Freud relishes his exchanges with Lewis occasionally punctuating his comments with “thank God”, at the end of sentences, which always get a laugh from the engaged and savvy audience. When pressed by Lewis, Freud replies, “It’s an old habit I’ve been trying to overcome for years”. The genuine mutual respect the characters have for one another is apparent from the outset, and the fluidity of their performances have Ellenstein’s creative fingerprints all over them. The format is an old one. Two famous characters come together to discuss and/ or debate their philosophically held public and personal opinions. Its “fight-night” in the theatre, between two highly educated and refined gentlemen, but without the rancor or “the win-at-any-cost” street-fighter tactics that pass today for civilized discourse. Words have power and are meaningful in St. Germain’s and Ellenstein’s highly literate and entertaining production, and surprise of surprises, there isn’t one “f-bomb” hurled from the stage into the audience (emerging playwrights please take note. Buy a thesaurus and apply generously to your dialogue). St. Germain, Ellenstein, Santo, and Turk, are the main reasons this splendid production resonates with the audience. However, a great deal of the success of North County Rep Theatre productions rests on the creative shoulders of its talented production staff led by Resident scenic designer Marty Burnett, who provides the actors in this production a pitch-perfect rendering of Sigmund Freud’s Vienna home before Freud and

“Freud” Cast

his daughter Anna escaped from Austria to England. Its mahogany walls and built-in bookshelves lined with stacks of books, tables, and Freud’s large desk set the tone from the moment the audience walk in. It’s my belief that a great set has a lot to do with inspiring a talented cast. Lighting designer Matt Novotny’s atmospheric lighting plot provides just the right

amount of light to see the wonderfully spot-on periodperfect costumes of Alina Bokovikova from Santo’s classic black pinstripe, to Turk’s wartime clothes-rationing look. Turk looks as if he just stepped away from his teaching position at London University to meet Freud; complete with brown shoes and socks with a gray jacket, blue sweater, a light green, slender knotted tie and

the ubiquitous trench coat, in the event it rains (It usually did when I lived there). Props design and stage dressing by Benjamin Cole enhance the overall look and feel of this impressive production which is definitely a triumph for North Coast Rep.

The Coachella Valley Association of Governments (CVAG) and the Riverside County Department of Public Health are conducting a Health Impact Assessment (HIA) of the Coachella Valley Link (CV Link) to understand how the CV Link can provide the greatest public health and social benefit to the most people and avoid potential negative community health impacts. The CV Link will be a 50-mile multi-modal transportation path connecting eight cities and three Native American Tribes from Palm Springs to Coachella. The path will be open to bicycles, pedestrians, and low-speed electric vehicles (LSEVs) (golf carts). The CV Link will be a great place to exercise and provide a safe and sustainable way for community members to travel. The meetings will be bilingual in English & Spanish I ALL ages welcome | Light dinner will be served All meeting locations are ADA accessible | This event is FREE!
