Plaza Theatre Restoration Modernism Week Donates $100,000 to Historic Plaza Theatre Restoration Project in Palm Springs By Desert Star Staff PALM SPRINGS, CA – Modernism Week formally announced a donation of $100,000 to the “Save the Historic Plaza Theatre Restoration Project” at the City of Palm Springs’ State of the City address held at the

Plaza Theatre on Wednesday. This is the largest donation that the Plaza Theatre preservation fund has received. “Modernism Week’s mission is to celebrate and foster appreciation of midcentury architecture and design by encouraging

By Desert Star Staff Revelers donning the most extravagant costumes – and some without almost any – assorted Mad Maxstyle vehicles, and a whole post-apocalyptic settlement were on display at ‘Wasteland Weekend’ festival held in California. The main theme of the festival, dubbed ‘Wasteland Weekend’, is the Mad Max franchise but the revelers apparently get inspiration from other dystopian titles as well, namely the Fallout post-apocalyptic game series. Despite the name, it’s actually a five-day event, that kicks off annually on the last Wednesday of September.

The permanent festival home is located in Mojave Desert between the nowdefunct Cold War-era Nevada nuclear test site and Hollywood. Some 4,000 people attended the event this year, significantly more than 10 years ago when it was first held attracting a handful of movie fans. The revelers can take part in various contests, attend live music and fire performances, as well as visit a special bartering area to try and exchange their belongings with other festival goers. How Streaming Can Make Watching Favorite Shows Easier By Desert Star Staff At home, you have ultimate control over your entertainment environment. Now, with today’s technology, you can create the same viewing experience wherever you are, even if that means you are miles away from your favorite spot on the couch. With a video on-demand service like Tubi, which offers access to more than 15,000 movies and TV shows – more than double the content library of other popular streaming providers – you can watch your favorite shows both new and old on more than 25 different streaming devices, including Android and iOS mobile devices, video game consoles and more. Consider these ways streaming services make it easier to stay up to date on the latest in entertainment: On-Demand: One of the biggest benefits of streaming media is the ability to watch shows and movies on your schedule. There’s no need to program your DVR to record your favorite show, and most services make the whole season available all

at once so you can binge watch to your heart’s desire.

Content: One of the latest examples to make its way to Tubi is season 13 of “The Bachelorette” featuring Rachel Lindsay. After missing out of the final rose during season 21 of “The Bachelor,” Lindsay, the first AfricanAmerican Bachelorette, got her redemption by awarding her own final rose to Brian Abasolo. Viewers can see how their love story developed, culminating in marriage, in October as the latest season will be offered alongside several past seasons of “The Bachelor,” “The Bachelorette” and “Bachelor in Paradise” on the platform. “Now that our season of ‘The Bachelorette’ is available on Tubi, we’re excited watch it again from the beginning,” Lindsay said. “It’s nice that fans of the franchise have the opportunity to relive some of our happiest memories as well as those of other couples that have found love on the shows.” Storage: Because media is available on-demand – provided you are connected

Photo courtesy of Getty Images to the internet – there’s no need for an extra storage device or an attachment to plug in to view your favorite movies or television shows. Price: The cost of streaming services typically pales in comparison to the monthly price of cable or satellite television. A service like Tubi, for example, is

advertising-supported, meaning the 20 million people who use it each month can access their favorite shows and movies for free without the hassle of credit cards and subscription fees. Device Flexibility: Your device needs can vary depending on what type of entertainment attracts you. For example, streaming video

Trainings Aim to Educate Kentuckians on Early Signs of Child Abuse

By Desert Star Staff LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Training sessions on how to recognize early signs of child abuse will be held this week in Louisville and Lexington. The events, run by Kosair Charities’s “Face It” movement, are designed to educate social workers, early-childhood educators, emergency medical service providers and concerned community members on how to spot red-flag bruising on children. Dr. Melissa Currie is a forensic pediatrician leading one of the trainings in Louisville. She said generally speaking, child abuse occurs as an escalation of violence over time.

“What that means for us is that, if we can learn to recognize the early warning signs - the more subtle bruising that happens sort of earlier in the process - we can intervene and help protect these children before the abuse escalates to near-fatal or fatal injury,” Currie said. The trainings will be held on Friday, October 4, and are free and open to the public. For more information, including information on available continuing-education credits, visit FaceItMovement.org. Keith Inman, president of Kosair Charities, said six years ago, his organization decided it was time to begin publicly addressing the state’s child abuse epidemic. “Well in Kentucky, we led the nation in incidents of abuse and neglect,” Inman said. “So the fact that we’re having these trainings and trying to get more people involved and more organizations involved because, at the end of the day, child abuse is an adult issue.” Currie said one way to determine whether to be worried about a particular bruise on a child

Kentucky’s rate of child abuse is more than twice the national average, according to data from the U.S. Department for Health and Human Services. (Adobe Stock) is the “TEN-four” rule. “So, the T-E-N stands for torso, ears and neck, and the four means any child four years of age or younger,” Currie explained. “And then the second part of that rule is any bruising anywhere on an infant who is not yet pulling up and taking steps.” Research shows far more children experience maltreatment than statistics

convey. And Currie said this often can happen because medical or family-services providers miss subtle but important indicators early on. “For us to help the public understand what kinds of bruises in children are normal and what kinds aren’t normal is probably one of the most powerful things we can do to prevent child maltreatment,” she said.

Marijuana increases sperm count, says Harvard study there are many other control factors that could explain the findings, argue the researchers. “An equally plausible interpretation is that our findings could reflect the fact that men with higher testosterone levels are more likely to engage in risk-seeking behaviors, including smoking marijuana,” said Feiby Nassan, a researcher in environmental health and nutrition at Harvard. So, while the university’s researchers aren’t exactly telling men to go out and spark up a bong, at least for fertility purposes, it apparently won’t harm their chances of producing offspring either. For context, a 2015 study found that Danish men who smoked more than once a week had lower sperm counts; while another 2018 study found that the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, THC, can alter sperm DNA and structure – not ideal when trying to conceive a baby. The research was published in the journal Human Reproduction.

By Desert Star Staff The settled science on marijuana and its effects on male fertility just went up in smoke, as research from boffins at Harvard indicates that, contrary to popular belief, weed may increase sperm concentration, not reduce it. Arguably the most commonly used drug worldwide, marijuana legalization across the world has led many academics and

health experts to revisit the drug’s impact on human health. The latest, long-term study conducted by Harvard University, involving semen samples from 662 men over the course of 17 years, showed that those who said they had smoked marijuana at least once in their lives had higher concentrations of sperm than those who abstained. Some 55 percent of respondents had, at one point,

smoked the drug before, 11 percent of whom were current marijuana smokers. “These unexpected findings highlight how little we know about the reproductive health effects of marijuana, and in fact, of the health effects of marijuana in general, “said co-author Jorge Chavarro, an expert in nutrition and epidemiology at Harvard University. “Our results need to

be interpreted with caution and they highlight the need to further study the health effects of marijuana use.” A total of 317 of the participants also provided blood samples that were analyzed for reproductive hormones. Among the marijuana-smoker group, researchers noted higher serum testosterone levels. The Harvard study does come with several caveats, however: the men, mostly white, college educated, and with a mean age of 36, were asked if they had smoked more than two joints in their lives and were also seeking treatment at a fertility center. Many may not have wished to disclose whether they were taking any drugs that could potentially impact the fertility treatments they were undergoing. In addition, the demographics of the study do not accurately represent the wider US, let alone the world. Also, while marijuana does interact with the endocannabinoid system, there is no clear causal link, as

By Desert Star Staff US President Donald Trump has demanded to meet with the whistleblower who accused him of pressuring Kiev for political gain, as well as with the actual alleged source that passed the information presented in the Ukraine complaint. With the Ukrainegate scandal gathering pace, Trump has launched another scathing attack at one of its main peddlers, House Intel Committee chair Adam Schiff, saying that he wants to see the Democratic senator tried for treason for his parody interpretation of Trump’s call with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky. “He wrote down and read

terrible things, then said it was from the mouth of the President of the United States. I want Schiff questioned at the highest level for Fraud & Treason,” Trump wrote as he went on a Twitter tirade on Sunday. Doubling down on his call for Schiff to face legal repercussions for “lying to Congress,” Trump has made a fresh demand, arguing that he, “like every American,” has the right to meet his accuser, referring to the whistleblower behind the “urgent concern” compliant, which set the current impeachment inquiry in motion. Trump’s demand for a tete-a-tete with his “accuser,” who was reported to be a CIA officer detailed to the Trump

administration at a certain point, comes amid reports that the whistleblower’s lawyers penned a letter to Schiff and Senate Intel Committee chair Richard Burr (R-N.C.) expressing “serious concern” for their client’s safety. The whistleblower’s legal team insists his identity should remain shrouded in secrecy, with lawyer Andrew Bakaj telling the Times earlier this week that “any decision” to report his identity would be “deeply concerning” and “can place the individual in harm’s way.” In his complaint, the whistleblower said that his knowledge of the events surrounding the Trump administration’s dealings with

Ukraine comes mostly from third parties, admitting that he was not privy to the call

between Zelensky and Trump, which was thrust into the center of the snowballing scandal.

Baltimore Program Offers Low-Income Teens More Tools for Success

By Desert Star Staff BALTIMORE – More low-income middle school students in Baltimore are getting into academically rigorous high schools, and they credit the city’s Middle Grades Partnership learning program. Celebrating its 15th anniversary, the Middle Grades Partnership crosses economic and racial lines by pairing private and public school students to work on multidisciplinary projects during summers and into the school year, according to Wendy Samet, the program’s executive director. “Citywide, only 26% of students got into the top academic high schools in the city, and 94% of our students did, she points out. “So, we are really changing the trajectory of students’ lives. One goal is to help students who live in poverty be part of projects they

wouldn’t ordinarily be exposed to, including designing and launching their own rockets and producing TED talks lectures. This year, Samet says, attendance rates for the program top 90%. One of the most popular Middle Grade Partnership projects is teaching storytelling techniques, Samet adds. Partnering with Baltimore’s City Stage, African-American and Latinx middle schoolers spent months learning how to write and present stories about their lives, culminating in a performance at the theater. “They were about everything and anything that you can imagine, Samet relates. “They also created artwork that was projected behind them for their stories – so, it was Baltimore’s Middle Grades Partnership students have a three-year retention rate of 78%. Beware of ‘Free Genetic Testing’ Medicare Scam

By Desert Star Staff Over the past few years, DNA tests have become more popular across the country. However, unscrupulous people are taking advantage of the buzz around these tests to scam Medicare beneficiaries. Scammers target Medicare beneficiaries through telemarketing calls, booths at public events, health fairs and door-to-door visits. They offer “free” genetic testing to help recipients avoid diseases or find the right medications. The scammers claim the testing is covered by Medicare, and therefore is free to the beneficiary. In reality, Medicare only covers genetic testing in limited situations, and only when ordered by the beneficiary’s physician. If a company bills Medicare for genetic testing, and Medicare denies the claim, the beneficiary could be responsible for the entire cost of the test, which can total around $10,000.

In other cases, the scammers are simply trying to obtain Medicare numbers they can use to steal a beneficiary’s medical identity or to fraudulently bill Medicare for services they did not provide. Such fraud can hurt not just Medicare beneficiaries, but all American taxpayers who contribute to Medicare. To avoid being scammed, the Administration for Community Living (ACL) offers this advice to beneficiaries: • Do not accept genetic testing services, including a cheek swab, from someone at a community event, local fair, farmer’s market, parking lot or other large event. • Always be cautious about giving out your personal information, including your Medicare number. • If you receive a genetic testing kit in the mail, don’t accept it unless it was ordered by your physician. Refuse the delivery or return it to the sender and keep a record of

Photo courtesy of Getty Images the sender’s name and the date you returned the item. • Always review your Medicare Summary Notice or explanation of benefits. The terms “gene analysis” or “molecular pathology” may indicate questionable genetic testing.

If you received a cheek swab or screening that was not ordered by a trusted provider or have concerns about billing errors or possible fraud, contact your local Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP). The SMP program, funded by ACL, helps

Medicare beneficiaries protect themselves from fraud, errors and abuse, and detect and report problems if and when they occur. To find your local SMP, visit smpresource. org or call 1-877-8082468. Family Features

Federica Mogherini. “Apart from the three countries that initiated the creation of the mechanism – France, Germany, and Great Britain – eight more EU member states have decided to join. Two more countries are expected to follow in their footsteps,” Nathalie Tocci, an aide to Mogherini, said on Monday on the sidelines of the Valdai Club meeting in Sochi. While Tocci did not mention which countries were joining the exchange, Sweden and Belgium have both said they plan to join, and membership was opened up to all EU countries in June, five months after the exchange’s creation. Earlier this month, senior Iranian lawmaker Mucteba Zunnur said the EU had promised to contribute $15

billion to INSTEX – and promised in return to resume compliance with the JCPOA nuclear deal if the money was received before the end of the year. The EU had no official response to his claim. Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei called for Iranians to “give up hope on Europeans” last week, slamming the country’s European partners in the deal for failing to do their part to keep it afloat after the US pulled out and unilaterally reimposed sanctions last year. New Matchmaker for Ohio Farmers, Landowners By Desert Star Staff COLUMBUS, Ohio – Beginning farmers in Ohio can struggle to acquire property for production, and it’s sometimes difficult for aging farmers to find someone who will continue the legacy of their land. However, a new tool might help both find the right match. Heartland FarmLink is an online resource that connects farm seekers with landowners who want to sell or lease their land, or find a business partner. Rachel Tayse is program coordinator for the Ohio Ecological Food and Farm Association’s Begin Farming Program, which just launched the site. She says her organization is hoping to simplify the land-transfer process, and keep viable farming land in production. “Elder farmers oftentimes have put a lot of effort into building their farm and they don’t want to see that lost with putting the farm up on

the market where it might get bought for future development, and oftentimes they are not connected socially with beginning farmers,” she states. Tayse says at the same time, beginning farmers may find it difficult to finance farm land. HeartlandFarmLink.org is a free service, and visitors can search posted profiles and access resources to support successful farmland transfer. The average age of farmers in the state is 58, and 10% of small farmers exit agriculture each year. Tayse says helping new sustainable farmers successfully enter and thrive in their businesses is crucial for the future of Ohio farming. “We need beginning farmers to learn from that elder generation and get onto the land so that we can continue to produce food and particularly producing it in sustainable way that addresses some of the water quality issues and climate

and minority communities. The report found the water systems serving these areas suffer from a lack of investment. After the Elk River chemical spill, Nixon said her organization recommended the state budget $40 million a year to help communities catch up on water-system repairs and improvements. She said they also have recommended consolidating the systems and reducing the amount of pollution released into the waterways. “There would be less pollution going into the water, which means the public water systems will not have to work as hard trying to filter out or remove a lot of the impurities that would be going into the drinking water,” she said. The report looked at three years of violations under the Safe Drinking Water Act. People Concerned About Chemical Safety was one of four environmental groups to take part in the work.

According to the “Watered Down Justice” survey by the Natural Resources Defense Council, two-thirds of West Virginia counties rate poorly for public water systems safety violations, and three quarters are slow to get the issues fixed. Pam Nixon is president at People Concerned About Chemical Safety. She said the state has 125 water systems, many of them tiny. “And when you have such small populations that these water systems are serving, you find that these small systems struggle with just maintaining, much less trying to improve, their infrastructure,” Nixon said. In reporting on these problems, the Charleston Gazette-Mail found communities that have been under “boil water” warnings for more than 15 years. Domestic-Violence Prevention: Celebrating Progress, Marking Lives Lost

By Desert Star Staff COLUMBUS, Ohio — Domestic Violence Awareness Month begins today, and advocates are gathering at the Ohio statehouse to reflect on progress made to help survivors while remembering lives lost. The Ohio Domestic Violence Network is honoring Rep. Laura Lanese, R-Grove City, with the Croucher Family Award for Outstanding Leadership for her efforts to include $1 million in the state budget for domestic-violence services. Executive director of the network Mary O’Doherty said it’s the first time such funding has been included in the state’s general fund. “Representative Lanese opened a door for us. We will be working with her to increase the state funding that flows to DV services,” O’Doherty said. “So it’s our opportunity to rally the troops and to thank Rep. Lanese, but also to say we’ve got a lot more work to do.” An annual list of domestic violence fatalities in Ohio also will be released, showing that

in the year ending on July 1, 2019, at least 81 lives were lost. Of those who died, 53 were domestic violence victims, including 41 women and 12 men. And in 25% of incidents ending in fatality, a child was present on the scene. Shelley Bell, Linking Systems Project coordinator with the Ohio Domestic Violence Network, compiled the fatality data, which she said is an important tool in understanding the issue and advancing long-term solutions. She spotted a few overarching themes. “Guns are still a major issue in terms of domesticviolence fatalities,” Bell said. “In 73% of fatalities, the deceased were killed by guns. In at least 35% of cases and we know it was very likely more - the victim had left or was in the process of leaving the relationship. This supports what we already know: that leaving is the most dangerous time for victims of domestic violence.” The data also showed in 1-in-3 fatalities, the perpetrator

The state legislature added $1 million to the Ohio budget for domestic-violence services. (AdobeStock) had prior domestic-violence charges or convictions. Bell noted overall fatalities are down from previous years - which could be related to increased survivor support and increased support for systems that keep batterers accountable through federal Victims Of Crime Act funding. “We can’t be certain, but it is possible that the increase in

VOCA over the past five years may have positively impacted Ohio domestic-violence fatality numbers this year,” she said. “Unfortunately, we have just experienced VOCA cuts, and one very much hopes that this will not contribute to higher fatality numbers next year.” The network also will highlight its clemency program, which focuses on freeing

women incarcerated for killing their abusers in self-defense. The data shows that in 83% of cases where a woman killed a man, there was a past history of the woman having been abused by the man. Farmers, Ranchers Push for “Green New Deal” Policies

Scientists say regenerative farming practices that don’t use synthetic fertilizers or chemical pesticides can help capture more carbon from the atmosphere and create healthier soil for crops. (Pixabay) By Desert Star Staff CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Agriculture is the fourth-largest producer of climate pollution. Now farmers and ranchers from across the U.S. have launched a campaign urging Congress to pass a Green New Deal that supports regenerative family farming and ranching practices over industrial-scale agribusiness.

Katherine Paul, communications director with the group Regeneration International, said farmers across the political spectrum are seeing the proposal as an opportunity to level the playing field. “The goals that are laid out in this Green New Deal are goals that we as farmers can help achieve in this country,”

She said supporting cleaner practices would produce healthier food and enrich soil by capturing more carbon. Critics of the Green New Deal say it’s too expensive and argue a better way to address climate change would be to encourage innovation in the private sector. Agribusiness currently spends more than the defense industry lobbying Congress. “And what they want is rarely good for small, independent farmers and ranchers who are interested in farming in a way that benefits everyone,” Paul observed. To date, more than 10,000 farmers and ranchers have joined the campaign. The coalition’s next steps include creating alliances with conservation and business groups. They also plan to invite lawmakers to come out and see the benefits of clean land use along with the economic challenges facing a growing number of the nation’s family farms.

Treya’s Last Dance Explores a Young Woman’s Single Life in London By Lisa Lyons It was shortly after the British Raj released its grip on the people of India in 1947, after nearly 100 years of rule, that working-class Indian families began emigrating to London. The subsequent blending of the two radically different cultures - the Brits and those fleeing the weak economy in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh - was filled with battles and bruised feelings; the uncomfortable relationship continues to this day despite the growing diversity of a country stretched to its limits, both economically and socially. This is the world portrayed in the entertaining one-woman show “Treya’s Last Dance” now playing at Hollywood’s Hudson Guild Theatre. It is in a middle class, working neighborhood of London that we meet Treya, a twenty-something who appears on stage draped in traditional Indian dance garb; the music starts, but she falls behind in her routine, fleeing the stage in frustration and shame. When she returns, dressed like a typically trendy East End girl, she addresses the audience in a confessional style monologue. We learn about her family, particularly her demanding mother and annoying brother, her deadend job, and her lonely social life that pushes her to attend an excruciating speed dating event at a local club. Shyam Bhatt, who also wrote the play, portrays the hapless Treya, a bundle of nerves, tics and tumbling words. Her energy carries the audience with her on an emotional journey from confusion to grief to hopefully a happy ending. While the show runs a little over an hour, it flies by thanks to Bhatt and the sensitive direction of Poonam Basu, herself an actor and writer who has appeared on stages in LA, Boston, Phoenix, and Madrid. Basu has also produced six short films, one who just won an award at the recent Vegas Movie Awards. While much of Treya’s observations on life initially seem simplistic and crowdsourced, the more we learn about her, we see that there is a deeply felt sorrow that becomes clearer as the show goes on. Her efforts to find a “life partner” make more sense in light of her loss. She faces her past and her future with indefatigable humor and a pugnacious, “Bolshy” attitude. One has no doubt that Treya will find her center and move forward in life as only she can. One small note: Bhatt uses the unique and sometimes unintelligible argot of East Indian working-class youth, so some of the jokes and her comments might sail over the heads of individual audience members. As I grew up in the UK, I was familiar with

some of the terms she used and found them endearingly perfect for her character. According to program notes, Bhatt has written a second play, which she developed at the prestigious Kali Theatre Writers program in London. “Wisdom Teeth” will be staged next year, and I will be interested to see the next phase of this talented woman’s artistic journey. The creative team for “Treya’s Last Dance” includes music composed by Archita Kumar, lighting and sound by Steve Pope, voiceovers/vocals by Arun Kamath, and production assistant Jana Dimitrievska. If you want to spend an hour or so with a complex, whip-smart, sexually aware young woman with attitude, Treya is your Dream Girl!

San Francisco is pulling out all the stops to fight homelessness Except actually making housing affordable

By Helen Buyniski San Francisco is one of the wealthiest cities in the US, but its high housing prices and strict zoning have contributed to a homelessness crisis. The city has declared war on its rough sleepers – because housing them is too easy. The latest offensive in the city’s “war on homelessness” is sidewalk boulders – giant rocks placed along the sidewalk to deter homeless encampments. San Franciscans in the Mission Dolores neighborhood raised $2,000 to line their walkway with 24 large boulders to stop the homeless from setting up camp, using and selling drugs, and otherwise lowering the quality of life.

The plan, so far, has made matters worse – the homeless set up tents anyway, forcing those who actually want to use the sidewalk for its intended purpose to walk on the street, and some locals have taken it upon themselves to remove the rocks – either by pushing them onto the road or (in the case of one enterprising woman) by listing them on Craigslist. It’s easy to sympathize with the residents – forced to pool their resources to make their neighborhood safe because the government, for whatever reason, won’t take steps to clear out the undesirables. But one of the reasons it’s so expensive to live in San Francisco is the dire

housing shortage, a problem that could easily be remedied if the government cleared the way for the construction of more housing by altering the rigid zoning laws that prevent the development of high-rise apartments, leaving a growing population to play “musical chairs” with a static number of dwellings. Instead, the city government “fights homelessness” by fighting the homeless – destroying semi-permanent large tent encampments and lining the sidewalks with metal barriers instead of boulders to make sure they don’t rebuild – even though its shelters have only space for about a tenth of

How to Host a Friendsgiving Feast

By Desert Star Staff As one of the most popular holiday traditions in the United States, families have celebrated Thanksgiving for decades. However, as more and more hosts look to put a new spin on the festivities, Friendsgiving continues to grow in popularity. While the two “holidays” generally involve the same ideals – showing appreciation for loved ones, whether family or friends – cooking for both can be a challenge during this busy season. Consider these quick and easy ideas from the Friendsgiving experts at Sabra to celebrate this vibrant event with your closest friends. Decorations: Plenty of planning and preparation goes into Thanksgiving festivities, which makes Friendsgiving an opportunity to take a step back and focus on simplicity. Keep your table decor clean and modern, like an understated black-andwhite design, where food and fun can take center stage. Attire: Friendsgiving strikes a delicate balance between a reunion of companions and just an excuse to spend time with your closest cohorts, which can

make a normally tricky decision even more difficult: what to wear. Try aiming for the more casual look, or try something low-key and fun like a pajama party. Food: Because Friendsgiving is usually celebrated within a week or so of Thanksgiving, whether it’s before or after, most guests will be tired of turkey and stuffing – meaning it’s time to think outside the box. For just enough of a twist on traditional seasonal taste, try making plant-based versions of your childhood favorites. This Hummus Mashed

Potatoes recipe is a perfect example – creating a dairyfree and gluten-free version of the classic dish that’s bursting with unexpected flavors. Alternately, if you’re hosting this year, these Sweet and Savory Cranberry Hummus Bites can hold over a hungry crowd. For another simple snacking solution, pairing a dip like Sabra Hummus, available in more than a dozen flavors, with pita chips or baby carrots may be your party-perfect appetizer. San Francisco’s homeless population. The city passed a law in 2016 allowing for the “speedy dismantling” of tent camps. And as the homelessness problem has grown (with everyone person housed, three more ends up on the street, according to the SF Chronicle), so have the borderline-sadistic approaches to defeating it. Since the 1990s, San Francisco has removed nearly all benches and public seating, hoping to deter the homeless from sleeping on them. Hydrophobic “pee-proof paint” has been applied around the city to combat the problem of public urination – apparently cheaper than public toilets, it is a perfect example of solving the wrong question, as the city continues to marinate in feces. A “sit-lie” ordinance passed in 2010 made it illegal to so much as sit on the street; sporadic enforcement focused on tourist areas merely pushed the homeless into residential neighborhoods, and a 2018 court ruling declared it unconstitutional to criminalize homelessness if no shelters were available. San Francisco’s “Homeward Bound” program ships the homeless out of the city to live with family and friends – probably the least disturbing of all the “solutions,” but still a band-aid on a gaping bullet wound. Shocking videos of drug addicts shooting up in San Francisco metro stations have gone viral. The city’s

“poop problem” is the butt of jokes worldwide. Authorities shrug their shoulders when someone suggests installing public toilets or expanding the “tiny homes” project that has seen the homeless successfully housed in small shed settlements in neighboring Oakland. Instead, they focus their energies on clearing away homeless encampments, so their transient residents lack any sense of permanence (and the motivation to care for their makeshift homes). When UN rapporteur on homelessness Leilani Farha visited San Francisco last year, she “[couldn’t] help but be completely shocked” by what she saw. Farhani suggested a moratorium on tent-clearing as the first step, admitting that solving the root causes of homelessness would take long-term effort, but long-range attempt does not get politicians elected. Addressing the root causes of homelessness would require acknowledging that half of the homeless end up on the street after their 50th birthday, chewed up and spat out by a society with no social safety net for individuals approaching retirement age or the elderly, and that 11 percent have a job that still doesn’t pay for a roof over their head. It would require addressing the record high-income inequality in the US in general and California in particular – an idea which causes most politicians to retreat in fear.

HUMMUS MASHED POTATOES Ingredients: 5 cups yellow potatoes (about 6 potatoes), peeled and cut into 1 1/2-inch cubes 1/4 teaspoon salt, plus additional, to taste, divided 1 1/3 cups Sabra Classic Hummus 2 tablespoons olive oil or coconut oil fresh pepper, to taste 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh parsley Directions: Place potato cubes and 1/4 teaspoon salt in medium-sized pot with enough water to cover. South Atlantic Fishery Council Requires Catch-and-Release Devices

By Desert Star Staff RALEIGH, N.C. – Fishermen from North Carolina down to Eastern Florida will soon be required to equip their boats with a portable device to help deep water fish survive when they’re caught and then released back into the ocean. The South Atlantic Fishery Management Council recently voted to require that boats fishing for snapper and grouper carry what are called descending devices. Jack Cox, a commercial fishing boat captain, says the measure will help keep fish populations healthy. “I think it’s a great idea, I’m very supportive of it,” he states. “We have all these size limits, and we have open and closed seasons, and I think this is something that we should have done a long time ago.” The new rule, which applies to both recreational and commercial fishing, must next be approved by

the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The rapid change in pressure as fish are pulled from the ocean causes gas and swelling, known as barotrauma. And when the bycatch – unwanted fish – are released, they often don’t survive. Leda Cunningham, manager of the Conserving Marine Life programs for The Pew Charitable Trusts, says the weighted, reusable devices can help ensure fish aren’t dying unnecessarily. “This new measure addresses a serious problem that frustrates fishermen and is harming some of our most important fish populations,” she points out. “Millions of fish die needlessly during catchand-release. And saving many of them by using an inexpensive, easy-touse device means we’re helping ocean ecosystems while also boosting future

says. “It’s going to take some education, but the first step is to require them to have it. So, if they have it on the boat, hopefully they’ll start to use it.” According to a recent stock assessment, 28.5%

of recreationally caught and 38% of commercially caught red snapper in the South Atlantic die after release. Support for this reporting was provided by The Pew Charitable Trusts.

By Desert Star Staff LANSING, Mich. – Lowincome communities of color – such as Flint, Michigan, or Newark, New Jersey – are much more likely than white, more affluent towns to suffer with polluted water for years, according to a new report. The study, called Watered Down Justice, analyzed Environmental Protection Agency data for 200,000 violations of the federal Safe Drinking Water Act. Report co-author and Director of Science and Data at the Natural Resources Defense Council Kristi Pullen Fedinick says states are neglecting

black and brown communities. “You know, some of it is the voices being ignored,” says Pullen Fedinick. “I think some of it is disinvestment in communities – infrastructure disinvestment. It could be industries and jobs leaving areas. There are a number of factors that are outside of just drinking water that have led to the crisis happening in Flint.” The study found that local authorities and state regulators are failing to address and report pollution violations, especially in crowded towns with many low-income people of color and non-native English speakers. Pullen Fedinick notes

that toxics in the water have serious consequences for the families who must use it for drinking, cooking and bathing. “The cost of that to human health could include things like cancer, compromised

fertility, developmental effects, serious infections and more,” says Pullen Fedinick. The report suggests that Congress and states step up enforcement and prosecutions, increase

Millennials Would Consider Ending a Relationship Because of a Financial Secret By Desert Star Staff Nearly half of millennials hide debt from their partner, despite 21 percent increase in communication since 2015 Millennials value financial openness in their relationships, with 31 percent saying they would consider breaking up with their partner if they discovered hidden debt or a bad credit score, according to the fifth annual Love and Money Survey by TD Bank, America’s Most Convenient Bank®. The survey polled 1,753 U.S. individuals who are married, in a committed relationship or divorced to learn more about how they approach money. The survey revealed that more than one-in-four (27 percent) millennials currently keep a financial secret from their partner – more than any other generation. The biggest financial secret is significant credit card debt, with 43 percent of all respondents hiding debt, and millennials leading the pack at 48 percent. Baby boomers and the silent generation (ages 73 and older) have their secrets, too. When it comes to hiding bank accounts, 46 percent and 52 percent of these older generations, respectively, conceal money secrets from their partners. In fact, these generations have no plans to tell their financial secrets (81 percent and 82 percent, respectively), whereas more than half (55 percent) of millennials plan to disclose their secret within the next year. Additionally, despite the threat of financial instability, most Americans (59 percent) admit to making impulsive money decisions, even when they know it’s irrational. The

survey revealed that 72 percent of millennial respondents in relationships knew a money decision was irrational but acted on it anyway. “It’s important that couples are honest and open about their money challenges. Often times a partner will hide a credit card bill or low score due to guilt or embarrassment, yet when the debt comes to light it’s often not the debt that creates the conflict - it’s the secrecy,” said Rachel DeAlto, relationship expert, coach and television personality. “If you want to maintain trust with your partner, own it and create a plan to improve your financial situation.” Five Years Later: More Talk, More Problems? Since 2015, communication between millennials talking about finances with their partners is up 21 percent, more than other generations. Now, almost all millennial couples (94 percent) discuss the subject together at least once per week. However, the survey found millennials are still more likely than other generations to argue with their significant others about money. Nearly 40 percent of those ages 23 to 38 admit to fighting about finances at least once a week, up four percent from 2015, while 14 percent of Gen Xers and five percent of baby boomers say they argue about money. Bending Boundaries for Love The survey also uncovered how far couples may be willing to go to advance their child’s education. The survey found that nearly one-in-two parents (48 percent) would consider offering a monetary incentive to an educational

institution to accept their child. But there is some disconnect between couples, as men (60 percent) are more likely to take this action than women (35 percent). When couples were asked whether they would pay for answers to a standardized test to help get their child into a good school, fathers (68 percent) again were more likely to bend the rules than mothers (32 percent). Overall, sixty percent of millennials would be inclined to pay to improve their child’s chance of success– more than any other generation. The study also showed that while men (70 percent) are more likely than women (48 percent) to reward their child with money, women are twice as likely to say that their love for their child would sway their money decisions (23 percent of women versus 12 percent of men). Meanwhile, men (16 percent) were more likely to say their spouse would influence their money choices. “It’s easy to get carried away with spending on our loved ones in the moment but knowing when to draw the line and setting boundaries for spending is critical to staying on track and building your financial health together,” said Jason Thacker, Head of Consumer Deposits, Products and Payments at TD Bank. “The most important thing to consider when making money decisions as a couple is to establish a financial plan that reflects unified goals and a system for managing your money.” To learn more about the survey data and managing money with a partner, please visit www. tdloveandmoney.com.
