Hurricane Matthew Can you see it? This spooky satellite image of Hurricane Matthew looking like a smiling skull lit up the Internet By Desert Star Staff Hurricane Matthew is continuing to roar its way along the Caribbean coast towards the US with satellite photos revealing just how intimidating the powerful storm looks from space. NASA has been sharing satellite images and timelapse videos taken from the International Space Station (ISS) as Hurricane Matthew hurtled through Haiti
and Cuba, leaving a path of destruction in its wake. Florida is now bracing itself for a ‘direct hit’ from the deadly category 3 storm which is expected to strengthen to category 4 as it approaches the southern part of the state. It’s also expected to pass close to or over NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, near Melbourne Beach which, ironically,
By Desert Star Staff PALM SPRINGS Great Autos of Yesteryear announces that their annual benefit classic car show, Casual Concours VIII, will once again be returning to Palm Springs on Saturday, October 15, from 10 am to 3 pm, on the grounds of the Desert Princess Country Club, 28555 Landau Blvd, in Cathedral City. For more than 25 years this event has been held throughout southern California; and for the 8th year, Great Autos is pleased to return to Palm Springs. General admission is $10, (with free parking)
and all proceeds this year will benefit Angel View whose mission is helping children and adults reach their maximum potential. “We are expecting more than 150 classic, exotic and special interest vehicles to be showcased on the golf course green,” said Jay D’Angelo, President of Great Autos. “Food and beverages for purchase will also be available at the show, so come have lunch and make a day of it!” Great Autos is also pleased to announce that a classic 1987 Buick Somerset Regal, donated by Tom Keim,
is home to America’s next-generation weather satellite - the GOES-R. The $1.2 billion satellite - which is penned for weather monitoring and forecasting - is being held in a facility which can withstand up to category 4 hurricanes. GOES-R is due to be launched into space on November 4. Almost 2 million evacuations have been
ordered along the coasts of Florida, Georgia and South and North Carolina, according to ABC News. States of emergency have been declared in the four states. NASA’s latest video captured views of the menacing force on October 5 as it moved towards the Bahamas. At least 102 people have been killed as a result of the hurricane – described as the worst Caribbean storm
in nearly a decade. 98 of these deaths happened in Haiti, according to Reuters. The deadly storm has also become something of an internet sensation for its terrifying, apparently Halloween-themed appearance, as captured by a satellite image. A ghoulish picture resembling a human skull was shared by Weather Channel meteorologist Stu Ostro.

Cheetah Days By Pat Krause The Living Desert held a Cheetah Day on Sunday Oct. 1st to celebrate the 2nd birthday of 3 sister cheetahs living at the zoo. Guests got to see the cheetahs up close and watch them play behind a glass curtain. I saw photos taken by a guest that showed the cheetahs running and playing. The young cheetahs are being taught to put their noses up to the glass so guests can actually go face to face with the cheetahs with only the glass between then. Great photo ops by parents for children and a treat for the old generations too. They are taught by touching their noses and then giving them treats. The director said they did a good job doing that when the guests tried to get them to come to the window. She was so proud of the cheetahs and how well they have learned. The Zoo has the oldest living cheetah in the U.S. who is 17 years old but does not come out to see visitors any more. The event lasted 4 hours from 10 until 2 in the afternoon. They held a Cheetah
Night Dance Party in the Palm Room, which is an outdoor area. There was a DJ and Living Desert Dancers for entertainment. The Dancers held a dance instruction on how to do the Hustle. Some of the visitors wanted to get more boogie music to dance to. The DJ listened and played good dancing music, and then the dance floor was filled with people enjoying it. Some came with 60s wigs and cheetah ears were handed out to the visitors as they entered. The Living Desert provided a meal of hamburgers, veggie burgers, chicken sandwiches and hot dogs along with beans, cole slaw and a beverage that went along with the ticket. The Living Desert also served Birthday Cake to all the guests for Dessert. About 100 people attended and I think there would have been more, but it is still a little warm in the evening. The Living Desert sold cookies in the shape of the cheetahs, and other animals were one dollar went to the “Save The Cheetah Campaign.”

Hotels That Scream: Art!
By Anthony Grant Pumpkin spice lattes everywhere you turn is a sure sign Halloween season is upon us and perhaps like me you’re haunted by the memory of a generic hotel that’s more Bates Motel than Four Seasons. Sadly, as a recent road trip across the vast wastelands
of Arkansas, the Texas Panhandle and Oklahoma revealed, the more interesting boutique hotels of America are still largely confined to it coasts. Happily, however, there are a growing number of hotels that positively scream art--in a good way—and many of these are outside our borders.
One find is the Pallas Athena, a Grecotel Boutique Hotel in the heart of Athens, Greece (www. grecotelpallasathena.com). The hotel is within walking distance of the Plaka, the colorful neighborhood at the foot of the Acropolis. The artistic sensibility is on display
from the moment you enter the lobby: there’s a stuffed white fox in a blue box, and oversized white armchair that looks like a glove, and vintage travel photographs. Some of the guestrooms feature pop art flashes of whimsy such a sculptured blue hippo or yellow pig, while others have wall murals of comic book characters, in a nod to the street art one sees around Athens. Add a gourmet restaurant that features many products from Agreco Farm, the hotel’s own organic farm in Crete, and you have an ideal place to stay while exploring the vibrant Greek capital. Things are turning autumnal in these parts but the sun still shines bright through October in the Mediterranean and that’s where you’ll find one of the best hotels anywhere, the Poseidonion Grand Hotel on the magical island of Spetses. Fresh off the two-hour ferry ride from the Piraeus port, I was struck by the similarity of some art in the lobby that echoed some I had seen in the Athens
metro and sure enough, it seemed Greek painter Alekos Fassianos had followed me across the Argo-Saronic Gulf. Thanks to a brilliant partnership between the Poseidonian Grand and Artion Galleries, the former under the expert management of Maria Strati and the latter founded by visionary Konstantinos Manolakis, guests can now take works of Fassianos and other leading Greek artists home with them with ease. Hotels that welcome art aspire to a higher level of travel experience and they often cultivate very loyal, repeat clientele. Another example is the Diaghilev Live Art Boutique Hotel in Tel Aviv, which regularly features openings by leading Israeli artists. You can read more about that in my forthcoming book, Frommer’s Israel. And you can get a glimpse of the culinary arts that are in full Hellenic flower at the Poseidonion Grand Hotel by visiting www.youtube.com/c/ AnthonyGrantPressRelease.

Disney’s ‘Queen of Katwe’
So many films in recent years are based on comic book heroes and villains or robots and futuristic fantasy. But often a movie is at its very best when it tells true stories about real people who are able to overcome obstacles in their lives. Tom Hanks, for example, took on the role of Walt Disney in “Saving Mr. Banks” a few years back. In that film, Walt wants to bring the delightful children’s book “Mary Poppins” to the silver screen. Unfortunately, the author

refuses for many years. But nothing deters Disney, who is determined to bring the magical nanny to life because it is a story his daughter loves. Will he succeed? Obviously, he does, but how he finally accomplishes his goal is not only funny; it’s touching and moving as well. This year Hanks stars in ”Sully,” the true story about airline captain “Sully” Sullenberger, who crashlanded in the Hudson River. Miraculously, no one perished and tragedy was averted. Another autobiographical story currently on screen is Disney’s “Queen of Katwe,” the amazing true story of a young Ugandan girl played by Madina Nalwanga who, despite the odds, becomes a world-class chess champion. We first meet her selling food on the street to help support her family. Her mother, Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o, struggles to earn enough money to keep her children fed following the untimely death of her husband. Things start to change when the young girl follows her brother to a church facility where David Oyelowo teaches children how to play chess. At first, she watches from the sidelines, but soon Oyelowo encourages her to learn the game. To his amazement, she turns out to be a prodigy. Even though she cannot read or write, she has an amazing mind and a determination
to learn everything she can about the game. Oyelowo takes her under his wing, and eventually he finds a way to take her and several of his other highly gifted students to a chess tournament. This is no easy task since his pupils are extremely poor. Some of them, like Madina, are not even able to read or write. If allowed to participate in the regional championship games they will be playing against wealthy Ugandan students. How Oyelowo fights for his kids, coupled with Madina’s determination, is truly uplifting and inspirational. But her story is not without pain, suffering and setbacks. Even her mother stands in the way
at first, fearing that chess will take her daughter away from her duties at home. You don’t have to know anything about chess to be drawn into this story. Of course if you are a chess nut, you will find the story even more compelling. However, what draws you into this young girl’s obsession is her ability to overcome insurmountable obstacles. Not only is she “out-classed” by the wealthy students she must compete against, her mentor Oyelowo must convince the Ugandan chess community to bend the rules, so she can compete with players who were developed in the traditional establishment system. It is gratifying to see how much
can be accomplished when someone like Oyelowo is willing to make personal sacrifices to enable a youthful talented girl to realize her dreams. At the end of the film, the actors and the real-life people they represent are shown, and we find out how their lives have changed. We also are told what they are doing today. “Queen of Katwe” is well worth seeing. And there is already Oscar buzz surrounding this inspiring true story, Rated PG for thematic elements and an accident scene. DVD Update: “The Legend of Tarzan” arrives onto Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray 3D Combo Pack, DVD and Digital HD from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment. Own it earlyon Digital HD on Sept. 20 and Blu-ray Combo Pack on October 11. The action-packed film is based on Edgar Rice Burroughs Tarzan stories.

MUSIC Grade A titles thrive on talent, authenticity BY ROBERT KINSLER
An authentic tribute to Stax Records by Melissa Etheridge, a divergent direction for Dawes, the astounding return by the great Doyle Bramhall II, a reissue of Peter Case’s masterful debut and an intoxicating soundtrack add up to an eclectic collection of great new titles. Artist: Melissa Etheridge

Such is the case of Los Angeles-based quartet Dawes, whose 5th studio album “We’re All Gonna Die” signals a dramatic shift. While the group’s previous discs had the sonic feel of a Laurel Canyon-rooted folk rock champion, the new disc is decidedly more experimental - perhaps not a surprise since it was produced by Blake Mills (already legendary for his work with Alabama Shakes). At the time of his death, Horner and Simon Franglen had just started working on themes for director Antoine Fuqua’s 2016 remake of “The Magnificent Seven.” The select pieces on “The Magnificent Seven - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack” live up to the legacy established by Horner and Franglen during their earlier collaborations (including “The Amazing Spider-Man,” “Karate Kid” and “Southpaw”). Highlights include the tense “Rose Creek Oppression,” stirring “Volcano Springs,” evocative “The Deserter” and the lush “Town Exodus - Knife Training.” Information: sonyclassical.com.

New Potentially Significant Fault Discovered Under Salton Sea
Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego By KMIR News Staff SALTON SEA, Ca. - As concern about a recent swarm of earthquakes under the Salton Sea begins to fade, scientists studying the area have announced the new discovery of what they’re calling a “potentially
significant” fault under the eastern part of the Sea. Scientists from the Scripps Institute at the University of California San Diego say they have mapped the “Salton Trough Fault” that runs parallel to the San Andreas Fault.
The scientists say this fault could affect the current models of the earthquake potential in the area. Researchers used a number of high-tech instruments to look at sediment layers around the bottom of the Salton Sea
to discover the fault. They say it was hard to detect the strike-slip fault because it hasn’t produced any previously-detected seismic events. Now researchers are going to work to determine how this fault plays into the other previously-known
faults in the same area. Scientists say this discovery is significant because of how important the southern San Andreas Fault zone is believed to be in potentially generating significant quakes. Source: KMIR
College Students Try To Dodge High Textbook Costs
By Desert Star Staff The sticker shock that comes when college students take a look at the latest textbook prices is leading to some creative and unusual remedies. In California, a partnership between West Valley College and Second Harvest Food Bank lets students borrow
textbooks in exchange for canned-food donations. At Bluefield College in Virginia, students can pay one flat, discounted fee that allows them to receive all their required textbooks before classes start. “It’s no wonder that colleges and students need to think outside the box when it comes
By Emanuella Grinberg, Chloe Melas and Joe Sutton NEW YORK (CNN) -- Kim Kardashian West was held at gunpoint in her Paris hotel room Sunday night, according to her spokesperson. “Kim Kardashian West was held up at gunpoint inside her Paris hotel room this evening, by two armed masked men dressed as police officers. She is badly shaken but physically unharmed,” the spokesperson said. Kardashian West is currently overseas for Paris Fashion Week along with her mother, Kris Jenner, and sisters, Kourtney Kardashian and Kendall Jenner. Her husband, rapper Kanye West, abruptly left his set early at the Meadows Festival in New York on Sunday night after telling concert goers there had
been a “family emergency.” The Meadows NYC’s official Twitter account confirmed West would not be coming back to finish his set. Concert attendees shared videos of the abrupt departure. The crowd gasped in surprise. “Dude just ran on stage and grabbed Kanye and he said, ‘Sorry guys, family emergency I have to leave the show’ and just ran off the stage,” Twitter user Joe Berg said. “It was wild, too, because Kanye ignored the dude at first like on some ‘I can’t leave’ and dude wouldn’t leave without Kanye leaving with him.” CNN’s Frank Pallotta was at the concert and tweeted: “Everyone was shock it just ended. No reason given, just ‘family emergency.’” Just a few hours before the traumatic incident, Kim
to textbooks; they represent a staggering cost that just seems to get worse,” says Chris Manns of the price comparison websites CheapestTextbooks. com and TextbookRentals. com. Both free services help students locate the cheapest prices for millions of books. One study by the Student Public Interest Research Groups showed that the cost for college textbooks has risen 73 percent over the last decade – more than four times the inflation rate. “Sometimes the expenses aren’t even necessary,” Manns says. “For example, students might be required to buy a ‘book bundle’ with extra class materials that add to the cost. Often professors don’t even use some items in those bundles.” Outside of a few innovative programs, such as that textbook-in-exchange-for-fooddonation arrangement, the options for most students boil down to buying or renting. “Renting might seem the obvious choice because of the price,” Manns says. “But that’s not always the case. When you look a little deeper, you could
find you’d be better off buying the book and selling it later.” He says a few factors to consider when weighing rent vs. buy include: • How soon do you want the book? Do you prefer getting your textbooks well before class starts? Then buying might be the way to go. When you rent textbooks, you need to return the book before the due date. If you rent too soon the due date will arrive before the semester ends. Hang onto the book and you’ll be charged a late fee. Most of the time, this added cost isn’t much, but it can add up if you’re really late getting the textbook back to the merchant, Manns says. • Do you like convenience? If so, then renting is probably the best option. You don’t have to worry about reselling the textbook after the class ends. Simply print a shipping label and send it back to the merchant. • Is the book all you need? Sometimes students need to have supplemental software that comes with the textbook. But most textbook-rental merchants don’t offer the supplemental
software when you rent a textbook, Manns says. Right now, most students are between the typical bookbuying times. Their fall classes are already underway and they likely won’t be buying textbooks for the spring semester until early January. But Manns says it could be financially prudent to start planning now for how to get the best bargains. “Many college students are already strapped for cash, counting out coins to pay for a meal or worrying about whether they’ll have enough gas money to get home for a holiday,” Manns says. “They need to look for ways to save everywhere, and if they can get by without a textbook or at least with a cheaper version, then so much the better.” Chris Manns is the managing director of the price-comparison websites CheapestTextbooks.com and TextbookRentals.com. He’s been in the business of helping students find the cheapest prices for their textbooks since 2001.
Kim Kardashian West held at gunpoint in Paris attended the Givenchy runway show where Kendall was walking. Kim and Kanye are very close with Givenchy’s creative director, Riccardo Tisci. Kimye, as the couple is collectively known, visit Paris regularly and also held part of their lavish wedding there in 2014. The couple hosted their rehearsal dinner at Versailles and Lana Del Rey performed. Earlier in the day Kim posted a picture of her outfit to Instagram with the caption “Details.” It has not been an easy week for the reality star. On Wednesday, Kim was rushed by prankster Vitalii Sediuk, who tried to kiss her famous rear end. Sediuk, who has pranked celebrities like Bradley Cooper, Will Smith and Gigi Hadid, was immediately tackled by her bodyguard.
