“The Comey Rule” Showtime Screens The Incendiary Politcal Power Packed Drama By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Member American Theatre Critics
Association Member Academy of Television
Arts and Sciences PART ONE: The Comey POV On the subject of “timing” in politics it is said that nothing is ever coincidental or random. It’s always well thought out and planned for maximum
impact; right down to the “leaks”. Showtime TV channel premiered its long awaited two-part political drama series “The Comey” Rule”, on Monday and Tuesday, September 27 and 28, 2020. It screened two nights
before the 2020 Presidential debates that the country was salivating to see on practically every TV set in America. Coincidence? Or was it by design? Television programmers are clever manipulators when it comes
to maximizing audience ratings, and of course, monetizing their film product revenue dollars. Regardless, “The Comey Rule” movie will no doubt please some and upset others depending on your political party affiliation and for its treatment Continues on Page 6

Is This The World’s Coolest Boutique Hotel?
By Anthony Grant The ancient Greek agora is rustic and much unchanged over the centuries; where the olive trees don’t obscure its view, the urban crush of modern Athens does the job instead. But there’s a neighborhood next to it called. Thiseio, an atmospheric slice of old Athens, with a mix of ancient monuments and a hint of a light-industrial side of the Athens of a century or so ago. Very central, not at all touristy, and now home to one of the most remarkable boutique hotels I’ve seen since Ian Schrager ditched disco for real estate, inventing the boutique hotel in the process. Yes, Asomaton is that original, and took a lot of work to create; the only difference is that here the backstage isn’t Madison Avenue but the Acropolis of Athens and majestic Temple of Hephaestus. Asomaton was three years
in the making. The building was made from wood and stone in the early 1900s, initially functioning as a carriage wheel repair shop. It became an elegant townhouse but had been abandoned for the last 20 years, so in close collaboration with the Greek Ministry of Culture, the historically registered building was transformed the newest luxury boutique hotel in the Greek capital. Here history blends with contemporary interiors, with all the furnishings custom made in Greece and a modernist tilt; the building’s original stone was meticulously refinished, and an indoor plunge pool was created. And rarely seen, spectacular views of the ancient Athenian cityscape terrace are pried open from the roof terrace. In the 19 airy rooms, lofts and suites, pop art by New York-based Greek artist Philip Tsiaras: think Callas, Onassis, Jackie O and Monroe
with a bit of a Warholian touch. We like the Acropolis Loft with Balcony, which accommodates up to two guests in spacious 215 square feet and features a king-size bed and mini-bar, among other features. The Lofts with Terrace are as large as 290 square feet while the Experience Suites go to a cool 312 square feet. All rooms have complimentary Wi-Fi, espresso and tea. “The entire Asomaton experience looks wonderful, and I’m told the hotel has an excellent sense of place,” says desert resident and international style guru Phyllis Eisenberg. “If flights resumed tomorrow, I’d be booking my stay today! For some context, Athens was and remained for a long time an industrious city of predominately small shops producing a wide range of consumer goods. In the early 1900s, when Ermou, Aiolou, and Athinas were opened,
the industrial zone was here. The west side of the city was the only possible outlet for the industrial zone with the Aghion Asomaton square serving as the terminus for carriages and all kinds of land transport arriving from the port of Piraeus; the addition of the railway station here in 1869 (where there’s a metro stop today) helped make Thiseio the central logistics hub of Athens by 1900. The entire area was filled with facilities serving transport needs: the older pack-saddlemakers, fodder-chandlers etc. and the newer carriagemakers’, carpenters’ and metal workshops. It was these carriage-makers’ workshops that pioneered the expansion of the industrial zone to the west. Asomaton is practically on the doorstop of Kerameikos, the sleeper hit of ancient Athenian sites. This is a vast and now mostly green stretch
of land slightly northwest of the Acropolis, the potter’s quarter in classical Athens. Its where the word “ceramics” comes from, and chances are pretty good that that beautiful black-figure vase depicting Greek heroes at work or play was turned out from an ancient potter’s workshop here. It was also the location of the main cemetery of ancient Athens and, in another section, the most important of the city gates. The ruins of Kerameikos are the stuff of Homeric sagas and swashbuckler cinema (it just takes a bit of imagination), and all this is literally down the street from the hotel. Which doesn’t really feel like a hotel at all. Because when you see the panorama from the terrace, with not one but two iconic temples in full and direct view, you will be transported even as you’re standing still. By Desert Star Staff Anti-hunger advocates express alarm at a new U.S. Department of Agriculture requirement that millions of surplus food boxes include a letter from President Donald Trump. The letters - claiming credit for the program funded by the CARES Act - started appearing in some Farmers to Families Food Box program deliveries over the summer. But as of September, the agency has required private contractors, including notfor-profit groups, to include the letter when packing and distributing the food. According to Joel Berg, CEO of Hunger Free America, this may put organizations legally prohibited from promoting political candidates in an untenable position. “It’s essentially blackmailing nonprofit groups that are doing this food distribution to say either you help advance the president’s reelection, or you have to
say, ‘Oh, we’re not feeding hungry people,’” Berg said. Congressional Democrats say the letter may violate the federal Hatch Act, prohibiting executive branch employees’ political activities. But the USDA says it does not. Berg contends the letter, which credits the president with prioritizing sending food to families during the pandemic and includes some suggestions on staying safe from the coronavirus, fails to pass a simple test. “On a purely legal matter, the question is, does something have a governmental purpose? There’s no governmental purpose; there’s no commonsense purpose,” he said. “The only logical purpose would be to aid a reelection campaign and that would be illegal.” He added when he worked at the USDA during the Clinton administration, they removed even the USDA labels from food being sent to food banks. While the contractors
packing the food are now required to include the letters in every farmer to Families Food Box package, Berg noted they may not be necessary when the food is finally delivered. “We’re being told food banks are getting guidance
that they can take the letters out of the boxes, and I hope many of them do,” he said. “We don’t take sides in campaigns one way or another. We just don’t think our tax dollars should be doing that, either.” Some foodbanks have
reportedly consulted lawyers to make sure the letters don’t jeopardize their nonprofit status or violate election laws. Disclosure: Hunger Free America contributes to our fund for reporting on Hunger/Food/Nutrition.

15 Ways to Cut Taxes for Small Business Owners
By Desert Star Staff If you want to reduce your small-business taxes, you need to do a little planning well ahead of tax season. While maximizing business deductions and keeping meticulous records of all business expenses are the most obvious ways to minimize your small-business taxes, here are some strategies to help reduce the tax bite. 1. One consideration may be to accelerate or defer income. By creating a profit and loss report, you may make a wiser decision on when to report income. 2. Transfer assets with the highest growth potential to a Roth IRA.

3. Max out contributions to your retirement plan. 4. Review the type of retirement plans so that Higher Compensated (HCE) owners can contribute more. 401K plans are means-tested, meaning the HCEs cannot contribute more than 2% compared to the Non-Highly Compensated employees (NCE)s. (Age-50 catch-up contributions are not included in discrimination testing.) 5. Consider adding Group Disability, Business Life & Long-Term Care as these benefits can be deducted. 6. Tax-loss harvesting is a strategy that uses losses from the sale of stocks to offset capital gains to minimize the subsequent taxes; however, if you have plans of buying a substantially identical investment within 30 days, this could trigger the “wash-sale” rule. 7. Consider hiring family members if you are a small business. The tax code is friendly toward family enterprises. You won’t have to pay federal income taxes or Social Security or unemployment taxes to family members that work for you. Family members’ work must be relevant to running your company. 8. Hiring independent contractors frees you from having to withhold payroll taxes. Ensure that you know the rules of using independent contractors first, or you could be subject to back taxes and fines.
9. Before you get rid of anything in your office, consider giving it to charity instead. It will add to your deductions. Taxpayers need to present a receipt if the deduction is at least $250. 10. By gifting to others, taxes can be reduced. You may gift up to $14,000 per person in a year. When gifting, consider giving some appreciated stock or mutual fund to a loved one who is in the 10% or 15% brackets, since he or she is not required to pay any federal income tax on long-term gains from the investment. IRA investors aged 70½ can make a direct donation to charity and count it toward their annual required minimum distribution. 11. Closer to the end of the year, pay your January bills in December. Pre-pay property taxes or pay the January mortgage payment early.
12. If you desperately need new equipment, purchase it now, plus you’ll reap the rewards of a new system that won’t interrupt your small business operation. 13. Delay selling winning investments until next year to cut taxes this year. Investors also need to keep actively managed funds away from their taxable accounts. Exchangetraded funds are more taxefficient than mutual funds. 14. A new addition to your family will allow a $4,000 deduction from taxable income and $1,000 that comes with the Child Tax Credit. Couples can also claim a tax credit equivalent of up to 5% of $3,000 in qualifying daycare and day camp expenses per child. For the tax year 2020, the maximum EITC benefit for a single person or couple filing without qualifying children
is $538. The maximum EITC with one qualifying child is $3,584; with two children, it is $5,920; and with three or more qualifying children, it is $6,660. These amounts are indexed annually for inflation. 15. Consider the benefits of Health Savings Accounts as the amount you contribute to the Savings is tax-deductible. It pays to have a good tax consultant to find more ways to save. Janice Gough is a Financial advisor in Palm Springs. Surprised by Assessments – are they Legal?
By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Hi Kelly, There is going to be an assessment at my condo and we are being told that we all must pay equally even though a number of us will have no benefit from the work being done. Is there anything we can do? P.M., San Diego
Dear P.M.: Condominiums consist of two elements, 100% ownership in the unit (aka “separate interest”) and an undivided interest in everything else (aka the “common area”). The HOA has a duty to maintain and repair all parts of the common area, including parts of the association complex which are not near your home. You along with all other members each own a fractional share of the common area and so its care concerns all the members. This is one of the tradeoffs of shared ownership, in that while you receive the
benefits of shared ownership and shared costs, some HOA funds will be expended on the other homes within the project. However, the day your roof leaks and causes repair expense, someone on the other side of the project could ask how your roof repair benefits them – but it does, if it’s common area. Thanks for your question, Kelly. Dear Mr. Richardson, A month after I became owner of my condominium, I received a letter and bill from the HOA board for a large special assessment fee. I don’t feel I should be responsible to pay this fee because nobody disclosed this special assessment to us prior to purchasing the property and the decisions were discussed and made prior to us purchasing the property. The assessment was discussed shortly before we took ownership. Should we be responsible for the fee? Any info or advice you could give me would be greatly appreciated. October 7, 2020
Thank you very much. Sincerely, M.P., Rancho Mirage.
Dear M.P.: Prior to a special assessment becoming due for payment, the HOA must give written notice at least 30 but not more than 60 days ahead pursuant to Civil Code Section 5615. You should be able to get a copy of that notice, which was supposed to be sent via mail individually to each member. If the notice was not sent, the payment is not yet due. If the notice was sent within the proper time frame, your seller may have received it but not notified you – in which case your problem is not with the HOA but is with your seller. Best regards, Kelly Dear Kelly: We received a letter from the association stating that homeowners must pay thousands of dollars each soon to fix all the balconies in the community. What are the California law requirements? S.S., Mission Viejo
Dear S.S.: First, I hope the HOA did a good job in explaining well ahead of the assessment why it was needed. Many HOAs fall short in this area, thereby creating unnecessary membership upset. I hope that is not the problem here. HOA boards have the power under Civil Code Section 5605(b) to impose a special assessment of up to 5% of the HOA’s prior year aggregate budgeted gross expenses. If the assessment qualifies under Civil Code Section 5610 as an “emergency assessment” then the board can impose a greater amount. Otherwise the members must approve the assessment. HOROSCOPES ARIES
So many changes are occurring that you must be more aware than ever before concerning beliefs, behaviors, and responses in all interactions. Be also mindful of your use of money & resources. Call in your capacity to discern and discriminate and your competence in sharing and giving (and then giving some more). Relationships are of prime importance and of great value to you at this time. Of what value are you in relationships?
TAURUS The ways we are in relationships originate (in most cases) from what we observed & experienced as children with our families and adults around us. Although you seem to hide yourself away in relationships, at least to the world, you’re dedicated to those you love, hardly even think of leaving. This dedication allows others to progress forward into transformational places that help them grow. We thank you. Are you loved enough in return?
GEMINI An uh-oh is resounding in my mind as I look at your chart. I want to tell you that no matter how compelling it is to return to a previous situation, you cannot remain there. CANCER Are you feeling restricted by family or is family helping you restructure your life? Is there a need for a rebalancing within the family or wherever you call home? Is communication coming forth that speaks of these things – balance, choices, rest, interlude? Is there a need for more Goodwill? A specific creativity is needed by you. Does it have to do with your home and garden? Are you planting? You must, even if it’s one small pot of seeds.

Remember the sense of community, as well as the loneliness, isolation and death? And the ways a healing of family wounds occurred? Remember that as adults we release all things sorrowful through forgiveness? Remember who loved you? What/whom do you love now?
VIRGO You want freedom - especially financial. Perhaps that’s what has been bothering you in the past months. Let’s ponder upon many different ways you are a resrouce, for
both yourself and others. Or maybe you want to bring in more money. How you can encourage more coming in. The most important way of receiving money is tithing to those in need. When we give things away, we experience freedom. And even though the issue may seem like money, what you are truly seeking is liberty.
LIBRA Your entire future is coming forth in great transformative ways. Can you feel it? It’s recreating and reorganizing your self-identity, how you see yourself, your professional and personal lives and how you interact with the world. There’s a lot of thinking and communication happening professionally. Listen carefully. It’s about balance, choice, rest and the future. You’ll want to participate in that future with a new state of beauty and harmony. Forgiveness helps.
SCORPIO There will be something given in the coming weeks, a discovery, a new learning affecting your life and how you see yourself. It will begin with you helping another. Helping others reconciles us to our own humanity. When we fully embrace the needs of the times, seen through the needs of others, we begin to build the new culture & civilization, the core of which is a sharing society. You are a resource behind this idea, which becomes an ideal.

But before you progress forward, let’s review how things have been previously between you and others in groups by asking what were those groups, who were the people and how were you perceived? In groups people see you as the one who transform them. Some like this, many don’t. However, this is your task in groups. Understanding this helps you maintain confidence. We are excited to make this first step in building out our team to support our work moving forward.” Claypool brings deep experience in redistricting including his role with the California State Auditor’s Office (formerly known as the Bureau of State Audits) where he assisted in the transition of the Voters FIRST Act, following its passage in 2008, to an administrative process and then served as the project manager for the selection of the 2010 Citizens Redistricting Commission. Claypool then went on to serve as the 2010 Commission’s Executive Director. “I am honored to have been selected by the 2020 Commission to serve as its Executive Director,” said
Claypool. “The next year is going to be an exciting but demanding time for the Commissioners who are tasked with large-scale outreach, safe public meetings, data analysis, map drawing, and much more. I’m pleased to have the opportunity to oversee the Commission’s operations and keep them running smoothly so that commissioners can focus on doing the important work of redrawing California’s district lines.” The Commission is set to fill at least two more positions over the next several weeks, including Legal Counsel and a Communications Director. Applications for those open job listings closed on September 30, 2020, and the candidates will be reviewed at upcoming closed session meetings October 7, 2020
of the 2020 Commission. Information about forthcoming meetings and news related to other Commission activities is available at wedrawthelines.ca.gov. About the 2020 Citizens Redistricting Commission Every ten years, after the federal census, California must re-establish the boundaries of its Congressional, State Senate, State Assembly, and State Board of Equalization districts to reflect new population data and shifting populations. The Voters FIRST Act gave California citizens this power to ensure that new and fair political boundaries are drawn without special interests, politics, and political influence. As was done ten years ago, a new independent redistricting commission made up of 14
citizens—five Democrats, five Republicans, and four that are not affiliated with either of the largest parties—is responsible for drawing the new district lines. The 14-member 2020 Citizens Redistricting Commission is fully formed. As required by law, the first eight members of the 2020 Citizens Redistricting Commission were randomly selected on July 2, 2020, from a list of remaining applicants delivered by the Legislature on June 26, 2020. These first eight members chose the final six members from the applicants that remained in the applicant pool and formed the full Commission on August 7, 2020. “Wine Crush (Vas-y Coupe!)”- A Peek At Harvest Time in France
To be honest, it took a while to figure out exactly what the format was in this up close and very personal look at harvest time at the Domain Jacques Selosse in the Avize region of Champagne, France. Was Wine Crush (Vas-y Coupe!) a narrative film? Documentary? Docudrama? Cinema Vérité or Observational Cinema? However, as I got into the film, it finally became clear that this delightful journey, capturing the heart and soul of the grape-harvesting season, was shot in the style of Cinema Vérité.* Wonderfully produced and directed by Laura Naylor, this enchanting film presents an intimate look at the daily lives of a group of working-class men. Some
playfully joke with each other or share family stories. The wife of one of the workers is part of the group of women who will be preparing the mouthwatering meals. There are delightful scenes of the cooks comparing recipes, deciding what food items needed to be purchased, and fun shopping trips to the markets. But, with the younger members of the family taking on greater roles in running the business, there are occasional culture clashes between the aging pickers and the younger family members who might not embrace all of their traditions. However, comes the evening, they all gather in a beautiful, candlelit dining room and between the gourmet food, plenty of fabulous wine, and singing, tensions of the day soon melt away as Brian Bender and Deniz Cuylan’s rousing musical of them have been showing greet each other as most of up for the Jacques Selosse them have known each other score fully supports the joy and spirit of these people. champagne vineyards’ harvest for a long time. Acid Coco, Mucho Gusto
By Desert Star Staff Acid Coco left Colombia many years ago, but it’s never far away. Channeling cumbia, punk, champeta and reggaeton and other tropical rhythms with electronic sounds in recording sessions that doubled as therapy, they have created a work of visceral emotion that traverses musical landscapes. Love, Colombia, memories of past lives are some of the sources that inspired the duo in writing and creating this album. Sometimes being apart brings you even closer. These tracks were recorded over two frenzied sessions in Geneva; ideas, lyrics, music, memories laid down on tape (sorry, hard drive), a creative purge driven by emotional and physical collapse. Creation proved to be the panacea and Colombia the shelter, a place where they www.desertstarweekly.com
could rinse away their demons by evoking dreams of yore, both musically and spiritually. On Mucho Gusto, you will find rhythms that speak various the density and diversity of Colombia’s music. These are music styles made to make people dance, whether next to an ear-shattering picó sound system, a fanfare of brass, an accordion-led trio or even a victrola. They are styles that were born nostalgic, tied to the environments where they came, but also full of devilry, serious songs laced with oneliners and fun-poking wordplay, never afraid to mock itself. This is the spirit of Acid Coco. On “Yo Bailo Sola,” there is no mistaking the cumbia beat, yet they break with the dogma of tradition (a recurring theme), the song’s female protagonist telling her wouldbe dance partner to leave
her be, she wants to dance alone. The Afro-Colombian party music of champeta takes hold on “Caminando Vas” and “La Chancla,” which uses the bargain-bin Casio SK-5 keyboard for a sound heard on picó sound systems up and down the Colombian coast. “El Amor de Mis Amores” continues the champeta lovein, its lyrics finding the duo in a playful mood, speaking of “The Love of All Loves,” who is instantly forgotten when the romance ends. “It’s the Colombian way of talking about the tragicomic way we live our lives,” they say. “We’re used to making fun of everything; it’s our way to cope and survive all our tragedies.” These are tragedies both personal and national, speaking of a Colombia where, despite a peace agreement, activists and social leaders are still being killed regularly. The October 7, 2020
scars across Colombia still have some way before they can heal, a theme that haunts the cumbia “El Lamento,” a pure example of how a song about tragedy can still have a thumping beat. “Sin Salida” is them at their most punk, transposing Suicide to the Caribbean coast with distorted bass and lo-fi beats, “Solo Estás Tu” brings tecno merengue (a popular style from the 90s) bang upto-date. A softer side emerges on “Siempre En Mis Sueños,” which fuses a ballad with a reggaeton beat. “Nuevo Día” has a pop influence, which reminds of the beginning of the Rock En Español movement in Latin America. The final track, “Me Voy,” pays tribute to Son Montuno, salsa being one of these two Colombians’ leading musical motors. The music of Acid Coco will ring true for anyone who has been paying attention to the diasporic music being made by Colombians around the world – Systema Solar,
return next year, are once more headed home to their families. For anyone interested in an intimate look at a complicated wine harvest, this film walks you through the process from beginning to end, capturing the humanity of everyone involved as well as the symbiotic relationship between the owners and the workers. It also reveals the pivotal role Mother Nature plays in the final product, which could impact the harvest’s level of success. However, one can see why the Domain Jacques Selosse, now run by the founder’s son Anselme, has earned an excellent reputation for producing very fine champagne, perhaps due in part to using oak barrels for fermentation rather than the usual stainless steel. The film features: Miguel Delhaye, Samuel Delhaye, Bastien Favier, Léa Favier, Bruno Santiago, Anselme Selosse, Caroline Selosse, Corinne Selosse, Guillaume Selosse, Michel Waret, and Renelle Waret. Wine Crush (Vas-y Coupe!) in French with English subtitles, is now streaming on AppleTV and Amazon. Oh! One other thing. I would recommend watching this 92-minute film on a full stomach as the food scenes are scrumptious and will have you salivating. Cinéma vérité or “truth cinema” was a French film movement of the 1960s that captured people in everyday situations with authentic, unscripted, predominantly improvised dialogue.
Combo Chimbita, La Rueda, Bomba Estéreo, the list goes on. Like Acid Coco, these are artists combining Colombian rhythms and folklore with ideas from global music and the Western avant-garde. It’s music with a Colombian heart and soul that’s impossible to shake: “Even if we don’t want to sound like Colombians, we always sound like Colombians,” says the group. By dialing into their personal demons and their Colombian identity, Acid Coco has created an album raw with kinetic energy, spilling over with emotions and musical ideas. It makes music to dance to, to drink to, to cry to, to heal too, to get lost to. It’s electronic, it’s tropical, it’s punk. It’s Colombian, it’s Pan-Latin, it’s universal. It’s emotional, direct and transformative, born out of exploring musical and personal kinships that allowed them to reconnect with their Colombian roots and lay their experiences and emotions bare.

“The Comey Rule” and/or bias of its potent subject matter: The 2016 Presidential Campaign. I prefer not to dwell on the public hullabaloo and the circus-like political firestorm surrounding the firing by President Trump of former FBI Director James Comey in May 2017. Those are actual historic events familiar to all I’m interested in seeing how this first rate, complicated, and very compelling movie by screenwriter and director Billy May, was able to pulloff the making of one of the most powerful, thorniest, and anticipated movies about the FBI verses the President of the United States of America, in a long, long, time. There are echoes of the writing style and familiar character types that screenwriter/producer Aaron Sorkin created with the brilliant casts of individual and ensemble performances in his “West Wing” set--stories from 1999 to 20006. That’s pretty heady company for
support May’s screenplay. But ultimately it will be the viewers who will determine the success of the film by an outstanding huge cast. There are over seventy roles for actors in this compelling production, with fifteen of them playing themselves as journalists, White house staff, and elected or appointed government officials, culled from archival television footage of the 2016 Presidential Campaign. The sensational story is well documented with an ending already known to the audience who have been waiting four years for someone to offer clarity on what really has been going on with a group of people who are loyal to one man, and are sworn to “Omerta”like secrecy to protect him. James Comey, the ex FBI director is a truth-teller to power. He’s a dedicated, decisive, intelligent, highly principled, FBI officer whose raison d’etre in life is the “Bureau” as it’s known in Washington D.C. He’s a
comparison. “The West Wing” garnered tons of awards in its seven seasons on TV. In the film drama “The Comey Rule,” writer-director May bases his script on many sources. First and foremost, however, is Jim Comey’s 2018 tell-all book “A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies, and Leadership”. It is a principal source that has been fleshed out with authenticated facts, notes, memos, interviews with high level Washington insiders and political players on both sides of the aisle. It provided rich anecdotal information for journalists who then authored books on the first three years of the Trump presidency. The research and time spent on the script has been exhaustive in its veracity and plausibility. Once again truth is indeed stranger than fiction. There have been volumes written that include conversations from government eyewitnesses familiar with the Comey/Trump affair that led to Comey’s ultimate firing. In short, there is a wealth of research to
cool, composed, customer, when under stress, who “walks on water” in the eyes of his close knit staff of seven highly skilled analysts. It’s impossible to list the many deserving actors who bring this potent motion picture to life. However, there are always stand-outs: Led by actor Jeff Daniels, fresh from his Tony Nominated Lead Actor performance on Broadway in “To Kill a Mocking Bird”, plays James Comey. His portrayal is a study in how actor’s stay in the moment when story-wise, chaos is exploding all around them. It’s a finely judged performance that floats all the boats in Billy May’s highlycharged, politically explosive showdown with President Trump who is sensationally played by Irish actor Brendan Gleesen. More about him later. The main sticking point between Trump and Comey is the FBI director’s refusal to politicize the FBI for Trump’s “personal war” on his perceived enemies. The president wants Comey

to agree to a loyalty oath as a way of leveraging his cooperation when National Security Advisor Mike Flynn becomes compromised by Russian GRU agents and diplomats. A request for leniency for Flynn comes personally from Trump; asking Comey to let this pass as Flynn is “really a good guy”. The FBI director eloquently refuses to let Flynn off the hook for his political indiscretions with Russia as a violation of FBI policy and rules. His decision, however, motivates President Trump to seek revenge.
dinner scene between Trump and Comey as solo diners, was a baseball bat, a favorite “convincing tool” of Al Capone back in his day when his problems didn’t go away quickly enough. (Just joking; as the President often says these days). But mobsters over the years have had unique and odd ways of eliminating their competition. The performance of actor Brendan Gleesen as President Trump, however, is no joke. Unlike his Saturday Night Live (SNL) comedy sketch impression as Trump, Gleesen’s frighteningly menacing and thug-like portrayal is an eye opener. As the antagonist in the movie, Gleesen preens, glowers, and speaks in low breathy exchanges intended to intimidate. It’s a highly nuanced, eerily, performed characterization, that will, no doubt, be discussed long after Mr. Gleesen moves on with his career. Great stuff from both Daniels and Gleesen. Part One, was getting to know Comey, his supportive wife Patrice, sensitively played by Jennifer Ehle, and thanks to an old theatrical device of a character/interlocutor; in this case the duplicitous Rod Rosenstein, is deliciously PART TWO: The Trump POV played by Scoot McNairy in The movie is about our a performance that would newly practiced American please Shakespeare’s Iago. politics; warts and all under Comey’s brilliant staffer/ Trump. It’s no more Mr. nice analysts team led by Michael guys. Just raw, brutal, win Kelly as Andrew McCabe; at all costs hard-ball. The Comey’s number One, includes actors sound like characters Amy Seimetz as Trisha from “The Soprano’s” in their Anderson, Steven Pasquale portrayals at times. an affair at work), Jonathan Banks as James Clapper, Brian d’Arcy James as Mark Giuliano,, and Sean Gallagher as Jim Rybicki deliver solid support. Holly Hunter as US Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates and Michael Hyatt as US Attorney General Loretta Lynch, and Kingsley BenAdir as Barack Obama, have smaller but important key roles. I believe it’s safe to say that most American viewers are familiar with the term “drain the Swamp”. Four years ago the incoming players promised to drain the swamp and ‘Make America Great Again’. Some in the country are still waiting for that to happen. Today, we have a politically divided country that appears to be doing very little to bring the nation together. Instead, we’re mired in partisan chaos, protests, looting, police violating their sworn oaths to protect the public and property from violence, random shootings etc. Film director Billy May, and his inspired cast offer his view of the first three years under the presidency of Donald Trump. Part Two is a peek into the machinations of how our two-party democracy system works under Trump and his Republican party enablers. The more the country knows, the more we become concerned as to just how much there is to know and how to handle that information when the American people begin to process the truth. Remember, a great nation deserves great art. Support the Arts!

anaging a chronic disease takes plenty of special planning and attention, and in many cases, a lot of money. In some cases, the expenses associated with disease management are overwhelming, forcing patients to skip essential treatments or medication and risk serious health complications. One example is diabetes. A study published in the “Journal of American Medicine” found that 1 in 4 indivi duals with diabetes had rationed their insulin, which can impact short and longterm health. Since 2002, the list price of insulin has risen, often costing customers without health insurance or on highdeductible insurance plans upwards of $1,000 for a onemonth supply. Consider these ideas to help manage the expense associated with a chronic disease:
1. Health Insurance Whether you have a chronic condition or you’re generally healthy, it’s important to understand the different types of health insurance available to you. Commercial health plans can be purchased by anyone and may be available through your employer, or you may be eligible for governmentfunded health care, but there are numerous other options and variables to consider. Understanding the costs associated with insurance plans means taking into account both your monthly premium and outofpocket costs like copays, coinsurance and deductibles. When choosing a plan, decide whether you’d rather pay a higher amount each month (premium) and less when you see the doctor (copays, coinsurance or deductible), or if you’d prefer to pay less each month and more when you need to see the doctor or fill prescriptions. Another consideration is the plan’s network. There can be a significant budget impact when you see doctors innetwork vs. outofnetwork. Other potential cost
saving options include health savings accounts or flexible spending accounts, which might save you tax dollars. 2. Doctor Visits Avoiding visits to the doctor because of the expense can end up costing more in the long run if you leave serious symptoms untreated or fail to properly manage a chronic condition. Make sure you understand all costs associated with your visits, including what’s covered by insurance, your copay and any outofpocket costs. Labs and tests aren’t always covered, and certain conditions like diabetes can require many testrelated expenses. Sometimes saving money can be as simple as having lab work done at an innetwork facility and sent to your doctor. In addition to a primary care doctor, many patients with diabetes also see an endocrinologist and have more frequent visits to the eye doctor. Indirect costs like transportation and childcare may also impact the overall expense of a visit. 3. Prescription Drugs Doing your research can make a major difference in what you pay for your prescriptions. For many conditions, such as diabetes, the cost of medication may make it tempting to skip doses to make a prescription last longer, but that can have dire medical consequences. Instead, conduct price checks with various phar macies and discuss your medication options with your doctor, including which of your prescriptions have generic alternatives available. If a generic is a possibility and your doctor believes it’s a good match for your condition, be sure the prescription notes that substituting is allowed. You can also look into coupon savings and patient assistance plans. In addition, some programs are available to help people with certain conditions. For example, GetInsulin.org, created by nonprofit organization Beyond Type 1, is a onestop tool for anyone with
diabetes who is having trouble accessing affordable insulin in the United States. “Highquality, modern insulin must be available to people with diabetes regardless of employment or insurance status, across all demographics, without barriers and at an affordable and predictable price point,” said Thom Scher, CEO of Beyond Type 1. Through the website, users answer a few questions and receive customized action plans to guide them through the access solutions that best serve their unique circumstances such as location, insurance type, income and prescription. 4. Medical Equipment Devices like oxygen tanks, pacemakers, blood glucose monitors and CPAP machines for sleep apnea play vital roles in treating serious medical conditions. If you’re worried about the cost of equipment rec ommended to help you navigate a short or longterm diagnosis, work with your doctor and insurance company to figure out the most cost-effective method to achieve your treatment goals.
5. Emergency Care A medical emergency isn’t only a drain on your physical and mental wellbeing, it can deliver a major blow to your finances. Emergency care can cost thousands of dollars per visit, especially with highdeductible insurance plans. Some conditions like diabetes are associated with a higher likelihood of emergency care needs for complications such as diabetic ketoacidosis and severe hypoglycemia. To offset the impact of potential emergency care expenses, plan ahead and build a savings account for your medical needs. 6. Food Certain diets cost more to maintain, and that can be especially true when you’re eating to accommodate a medical need. When planning food costs, be sure to account for the foods you’ll eat regularly, as well as the extras you’ll need, such as glucose gummies and snacks to treat low blood sugar for those living with diabetes. Learn about options to help manage your diabetes related expenses at GetInsulin.org.
According to research from the American Diabetes Association
Searching for Solutions After her father passed away from complications of uncontrolled diabetes, Christine Kanderski was determined to never relive that pain. This meant finding a way to afford treatment for her mother’s type 2 diabetes and her son’s type 1 diabetes. “There was no way that my family and I were going to let diabetes take another one of our family members,” Kanderski said. Kanderski budgeted for a laundry list of costs: appointments, health insurance, needles, test strips, glucose meters and insulin. One trick she found to save money was sharing supplies between her mother and son. When things seemed hopeless, Kanderski reached out to the diabetes community for support and resources. Tools like GetInsulin.org can help people find affordable insulin. Users answer a few questions and receive customized action plans to guide them through solutions that best serve their unique circumstances. Photo courtesy of Getty Images

By: Stan Popovich I am a managing fear author who struggled with fear and anxiety for over 20 years, and there were times I felt like giving up. During these times, my anxieties and fears were so powerful that I had trouble getting through the week. It was very tough. However, I did not lose hope. To get through those difficult times, the first thing I did was admit that I had a problem. I then took steps to find a mental health counselor who could help me with my situation. I also made an effort to learn as much as I could in dealing with fear and anxiety by reading many books and doing a lot of personal research. I knew that the answers I was looking for were out
did not fall as much, and eventually, I was able to skate without falling down. It was very tough and scary dealing with my anxieties; however, I made an effort to determine which techniques worked for me. I would then write down this information in a small notebook. The next time I encountered a similar situation, I was better able to deal with my anxieties by reading my notes. This prevented me from repeating the same mistakes I made in the past. Going to various mental health support groups for help was a tremendous asset in getting through my challenges. I was able to manage my anxieties and fears by using the service of others. Artist: NRBQ Title: In • Frequencies (Omnivore Recordings) You might like if you enjoy: NRBQ, Carbon
Leaf, Brian Wilson Tell me more: Although groundbreaking Louisville, Kentucky-spawned troupe NRBQ has been recording and releasing music since the late 1960s the band waited until 2020 to issue their first-ever set of rarities and outtakes. “In • Frequencies” fully delivers on the promise of a stockpile of hidden gems finally seeing the light of day. A brief instrumental recording captured at a soundcheck in 1968 (“Dogwood Winter”) opens the collection and the diversity and adventuresome spirit of NRBQ is displayed with equal aplomb on the more than dozen tracks that follow. The band’s mastery of an infinite of genres is exhibited; jazz (“Get Real,” “Love Came To Me”), swing revival (“That’s All”), progressive folk (“Sho’ Need Love,”), R&B (the New Orleans-mining “We’ll Make Love”), power pop (“It’s a Wild Weekend”), art damage (“Everybody’s Smokin’ “), country blues (“Sourpuss”) and genre-defying nuggets (“Orioles,” “Let Me Tell You ‘Bout My Girl”) resonate across the myriad of styles and decades represented. All but four of the selections on “In • Frequencies” are previously unissued. The packaging includes insightful liner notes, commentary and photographs. Information:
Artist: William Shatner Title: The Blues (Cleopatra Records) You might like if you enjoy: William Shatner, Ritchie Blackmore, Sonny Landreth, Brad Paisley Tell me more: Released on Oct. 2 via Cleopatra Records, William Shatner’s ambitious “The Blues” features the legendary star offering up reworked versions of blues classics with a heavy dose of firepower from the acclaimed likes of guitar greats Ritchie Blackmore, Sonny Landreth, Brad Paisley, Pat Travers and Tyler Bryant. Those familiar with Shatner’s past albums know his signature style includes dramatic spoken word backed by well-known musicians eager to help elevate the proceedings. That formula works especially well across “The Blues,” with “Sweet Home Chicago” (featuring Paisley’s unleashed shredding), the reflective Chicago-styled ballad “I Can’t Quit You Baby” (with guitarist Kirk Fletcher), “Born Under a Bad Sign” (Bryant’s fretwork shines here) and rowdy “I Put a Spell On You” (with Travers) among the fun remakes. My favorite tracks are Shatner’s introspective take on Cream’s “Sunshine of Your Love” (with Landreth killing it with his slide guitar), an especially nuanced reading of the B.B. King classic “The Thrill Is Gone” (with Blackmore and his wife, vocalist Candice Night, elevating the version to lofty heights), poetic “In Hell I’ll Be In Good Company” (with Albert Lee) and confessional disc-closing “Secrets and Sins.” Information: CleopatraRecords.com.

there and all I had to do was make an effort to find them. Over time, I became very knowledgeable about dealing with fear and anxiety, which helped me in the long run. In time, I became better able to deal with my fears and anxieties. Whenever I encountered a fearful and anxiety-related situation, I would apply the techniques I learned from the professionals and my research. Instead of looking at my struggles as a problem, I looked at each situation as a learning experience. For example, I remembered when I first learned to ice skate. In the beginning, I fell down all the time, but I kept getting back up even though it was very difficult. Over time, I

in my life gave me the hope and the faith to continue on during my mental health struggles. Never underestimate the power of working with others when it comes to your mental health issues. Whenever I struggled with my fear and anxiety, I made it a habit to take things one day at a time. I made an effort not to dwell on my fearful thoughts, which told me that I would not make it. I also realized that you can’t predict the future. A person maybe 99% correct in predicting the future, but all it takes is 1% to make a difference. There are factors and circumstances that you can’t predict or antitoughn make the difference in your current situation. In summary, the key is not
to give up and to seek help from the professionals. You are not alone when it comes to your mental health challenges. There are many support groups in your area where you can get assistance and meet others who can relate to your circumstances. Your situation is not hopeless, and by making the right decisions, you will eventually be able to get your life back on track.

Aid Groups Fighting Loopholes in Eviction Moratorium
By Desert Star Staff It’s been a month since the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention drafted an eviction moratorium under orders from President Donald Trump. But a North Dakota assistance group says there are cases where landlords still might try to evict someone facing a hardship. The moratorium is aimed at protecting renters from being forced from their home after similar measures expired, including one under the CARES Act. If they meet certain criteria, a person can’t be evicted until the end of the year. But Adele Page, deputy director at Legal Services of
North Dakota, said they’ve since seen cases where the tenant was facing qualified hardship, but minor violations were used as an excuse. “The person’s applied for assistance, she meets all of the qualifications, and the landlord’s trying to evict her for excessive dog feces in the yard and alleged damage to a post from a dog,” Page said. She said an inspection of the post didn’t find any damage. Page attributes this to the guidelines being vague. She said they should state only serious violations should be considered in cases where there’s still a hardship.
Legal observers say because these hearings are held in lower-level courts, there will be a variety of rulings; meaning some renters will be spared, while others won’t. Page said the best thing people in this situation can do is to gather and provide as much required documentation as possible, while doing their best to be model tenants. She warned the national moratorium doesn’t stop back rent and late fees from piling up. “I am encouraging folks to do as much as they can to get as much paid, to look for other assistance so that they’re not in a hole, and that
we don’t have an onslaught of evictions on Jan. 1,” she said. One of the key documents needed is a declaration page where a renter can formally state there are legitimate reasons for falling behind, and they’re attempting to
secure aid. That form can be found on the CDC website. Disclosure: Legal Services of North Dakota contributes to our fund for reporting on Health Issues, Native American Issues, Poverty Issues, Senior Issues.

Caring for Your Nutrition When Caregiving
By Desert Star Staff Family caregivers of people with illnesses, injuries or disabilities sometimes spend more time thinking about those they care for than themselves. It’s important to remember that self-care is essential to providing good care to others and must include eating well. Healthy eating can be especially challenging for caregivers who often have limited time to shop and cook. Fast food, snacks and comfort meals are tempting but usually lack healthy amounts of protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals. In addition to preventing low energy, muscle loss, illnesses and unplanned weight change, a healthy diet may help reduce the stress
and fatigue that can come with caring for a loved one. These tips from the Administration for Community Living can help caregivers take steps toward better nutrition without adding to already full to-do lists: 1. Drink healthy beverages at each meal and 2-3 times between meals. Water, milk, juice (to replace missing fruits and vegetables) or non-sweetened drinks are all better-for-you options. 2. Get enough protein, a key nutrient that helps build and repair tissues. Consider these ideas for increasing your protein intake: • Eat a high-protein food like fish, chicken or eggs at every meal • Try plant proteins
like nuts, peanut butter, beans and tofu • Eat your protein first at meals • Eat low- or non-fat dairy products and use Greek yogurt • Opt for cheese at snack time • Top your food with chopped nuts like almonds 3. Drink a liquid supplement, like a meal replacement or protein shake, if foods alone do not supply all the nutrients you need. A health care provider can make specific dietary suggestions based on your unique health needs, diet and conditions. FAMILY FEATURES
earning remotely from home is now the norm for many families across the country. Kids and caregivers alike have settled into a routine, though keeping children engaged can still be challenging. While kids have had to be resilient and adapt to learning away from their school buildings, there are ways to make the adjustment easier. These ideas can help infuse more fun and moments of inspiration into school days to keep kids engaged and excited about learning. Create a reward system. Children typically respond well to positive reinforcement, and a thoughtful reward system can help incentivize them to stay on task. Try to align the rewards with the structure of your day so everyone wins. For example, you can reward the completion of a long assignment with a play break. Giving kids the ability to choose the reward from a set of options can also increase their level of investment in learning. Seek support from trusted sources. Many familiar kids’ programs have expanded their services at no extra charge to help families through the pandemic. One example is My ABCmouse Classroom Live!, a learning experience that features daily classes built around themes such as community, responsibility, change, communication and cooperation. Each class feels like a real classroom experience, is led by real teachers and contains more than an hour of high-quality, engaging learning as part of an expertly designed curriculum. The classes can be streamed on-demand then kids can complete independent learning activities related to the classes, including interactive games, art and puzzles. Maintain social ties. Connections with friends are hard to establish without inperson interaction. However, with a little creativity, you can find ways to build new kinds of connections with educational value. Coordinate with other parents to start a book club and bring kids together virtually to talk about the stories or start an old-fashioned penpal exchange with kids from your school. Establish a schoolwork zone. For children, doing schoolwork in an area usually associated with toys and free time like a playroom or bedroom can be hard, but in most homes, extra space is at a premium. Get creative with your available space and set some boundaries. Use a room divider, rugs or other visual cues to set aside a space in the house dedicated to doing schoolwork. Get your children on board by having them help design the space or add their own personal touches like artwork. For more ideas to help make virtual learning fun and engaging, visit ABCmouse.com.

5 Homeschool Hacks 1. Use familiar toys to add playful elements to schoolwork. Building blocks and modeling clay can be used as part of lessons on colors, shapes and letters. 2. Laminate a password cheat sheet and keep it within easy reach so you’re always able to log in quickly. Also create a list of bookmarks and desktop shortcuts to save time accessing online learning tools. 3. Add some cheerful color to dry-erase sheets by using pompoms as erasers. Bonus tip: Slide a page protector over a worksheet so kids can practice with it again and again. 4. Get creative with household supplies. A dishrack easily doubles as a file sorter or book display. Cookie sheets can be used for working with magnets or as a hard surface for writing or coloring if your child needs a break from his or her desk. 5. Repurpose old puzzles by putting learning content on the back. Math facts, spelling words and shapes can make for easy puzzles.
