Ebola In Spain Health workers attend a protest outside La Paz Hospital calling for Spain’s Health Minister Ana Mato
Four people including nurse hospitalized in Madrid, chance Ebola will reach France by end of October By Desert Star Weekly Health officials in Madrid say three more people are in the hospital on suspicion of contracting Ebola. The news comes a day after a nurse who treated two Ebola patients at a city hospital became infected with the disease. One has tested negative. The nurse is now being
treated with a drip using antibodies from those previously infected with the virus, Reuters reports. Approximately 22 people who have been in contact with the woman, dubbed by media the “Spanish Ebola nurse,” have been identified and are being monitored, Madrid health officials told reporters Tuesday.
The officials added that the hospitalized include the nurse’s husband, another health worker and a traveler who had spent time in one of the affected West African countries. One of the hospitalized - the female health worker- was reported to have tested negative for Ebola late on Tuesday, according to a Reuters health source in Spain. She had

Spain’s Public Health director, Mercedes Vinuesa, told parliament that authorities were compiling a list of everyone who had come in contact with the nurse so that they could be monitored, AP reports. EBOLA IN SPAIN Continued from Page 1 cases in Spain – and recently, the US – involved individuals contracting the disease while in Africa and then traveling back to their home countries. The nurse had reportedly helped treat a Spanish missionary and a Spanish priest, both of whom came down with the virus while in West Africa and later died after returning to Spain. There is currently no proven known cure or humansafe vaccine for Ebola, which is spread via bodily fluids. Initial symptoms of fever and sore throat develop into vomiting, diarrhea and profuse internal and external bleeding. Victims may die of multiple organ failure within days of first contact, with some strains killing up to 90 percent of sufferers. The latest outbreak first struck the West African state of Guiana in December 2013. World Health Organization (WHO) officials, however, did not become aware the disease was raging in the country’s south until March 23, 2014. It has since spread to neighboring Senegal, Liberia and Sierra Leone and Nigeria. Due to a rapid response by authorities in Nigeria and Senegal, infections in both states combined were
kept below two dozen. Apart from Spain, the United States is the only other non-African country to register a case of Ebola. On September 20, an infected man traveling from Liberia arrived in Dallas, Texas. He reportedly started exhibiting symptoms of the disease 4 days later. US health officials are currently monitoring 10 quarantined people who had contact with the man, who remains in critical condition. The WHO has reported a total of 7,493 Ebola infections worldwide. At least 3,439 people are estimated to have died after contracting the disease. In September, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention predicted that 1.4 million people could contract Ebola by the end of January barring drastic attempts to head off the spread of infection. Equipment and procedures failure Spanish authorities have come under increasing pressure to explain how the disease was able to spread in one of their hospitals. While they say all proper procedures were followed while providing care to the deceased missionaries,
An ambulance carrying a Spanish nurse infected with Ebola arrives at the Carlos III Hospital in Madrid early October 7, 2014 in this still image from video. (Reuters / Reuters TV) reports to the contrary have surfaced. According to The Guardian, staff at the hospital said waste from the rooms of both patients had been carried out in the same elevator used by all personnel. The hospital was also reportedly not evacuated when the second patient, García Viejo, was taken in to receive treatment. Union workers also accused the government of providing hospital staff with inadequate protective clothing.
Some Spanish health workers’ representatives said the situation should prompt an overhaul of procedures and facilities used to treat those afflicted with the virus. “Something went wrong,” Máximo Gonzalez Jurado, head of Spain’s General Nursing Council, told Spanish news agency EFE. “They need to establish if the protocol is correct or not correct so that a case like this, that never should have happened, doesn’t happen again.”
Husband of Ebola-infected Spanish nurse quarantined The husband of the Spanish nurse, who was infected with Ebola virus while treating two Spanish priests in a Madrid hospital, has been put into quarantine, the head of Spain’s public health service, Mercedes Vinuesa, told parliament on Tuesday. The priests contracted the deadly disease in Africa and were transported home for treatment.

We all know what followed. College debt has grown the fastest over the past six years yet more than half of all college enrollees never graduate. Some studies report that fewer than 30% of college students receive their degrees in six years. It’s awfully difficult to find an accurate college graduation rate source. The government’s statistics exclude millions of students from their results for one reason or the other. Yet all those students who enroll and fail to graduate will likely still have some debt. Some colleges have shockingly low graduation rates and should be something families consider before allowing kids to attend a specific school. It was very surprising to see that nearly every study used six years as the time allowed to receive a bachelor’s degree. Undergraduate degrees have traditionally been earned in four years. If the expectation is that it will take six years to graduate, that’s a 50% jump in cost just from the added time alone. This goes back to why families really need to have a college plan with their kids before they graduate high school. It’s just not responsible to keep writing blank checks and hoping our kids graduate one day especially when the average student loan debt is $32,656. Auto loan spending has jumped 35% since the Great

Late payments and loans in default across all debt sectors are much higher today than a few years ago. Every family should have a debt plan. How much debt can you realistically afford? Should it be based on a percentage of assets, or income or savings? If you postponed a purchase, how long would it take you to save enough to pay cash? How long will it take you to pay off your current consumer debts? Rising debt is a concern especially when you consider
The “Open Meeting Act” (Civil Code 4900-4955) permits board votes by electronic mail only in one narrow circumstance. Civil Code 4910(b)(2) permits voting by e-mail only in emergencies, and if the board has unanimously in writing or by e-mail agreed to permit emergencies to be handled that way. Civil Code 4910(b)(1) expressly prohibits any other board decisions from being made by e-mail. I am guessing from your question that your manager had not collected such permission, and that the decision was not an emergency. If the decision is not a bona fide emergency, the decision violates the law and is at risk of being set aside as outside the corporate power. Mistakes will happen, and when they do, boards should admit the error and vote in the next open meeting to ratify the decision – that way it is “daylighted” in the minutes and your neighbors know the board can be trusted to do things the right way. The issue I have with this proposed policy is that the President has referred to homeowners using foul language, and another director made discriminatory racially insensitive comments in my presence while conducting board related business. In light of these factors should this board be allowed to file a police report on a member who may say such words as are regularly heard on network TV shows and are not censored? Your reply on this issue will be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time and consideration. L.T., Escondido

Purchasing Long Term Care Insurance
By Janice Gough In reviewing Long Term Care insurance as a part of a Financial review, I find that most people who purchase these plans do not clearly understand what they purchased and since they completed the purchase of the plan they failed to review it. Out of sight, out of mind! Then the day arrives when their family must determine how that plan will provide the care they need for their loved one. Many times the insured finds out what they purchased was not the understanding they had.
One word in a contract can change the outcome. In Long Term Care plans, these words are Indemnity and Reimbursement. Most L.T.C. plans written are reimbursement, which means that the L.T.C. plan will only pay benefits to a licensed medical provider and are reimbursed based on actual receipts. This provision eliminates payment to any family members as receipts are only paid to a certified medical entity, whereas Indemnity will pay the full benefits monthly to either the named insured or a medical facility designated by the insured. Daily and Monthly payout are other terms to be aware of. Where daily establishes a set amount of payout each day, monthly payout will provide the full amount for that period. This determination is important in the case where the patient’s daily health costs vary. If the daily costs are higher than the daily benefit purchase, the balance must be paid by the patient. Daily benefits are less costly to purchase over monthly, however they may present less payment
on claims and add more bookkeeping for your helpers. Still, your total benefits are paid out until exhausted. Many people only purchase Facility Only Coverage. The premium is significantly less than purchasing comprehensive care or by adding coverage for Home Health Care (HHC). To receive the benefits, families must move their loved one to a qualified facility. Unless they purchased the benefits to adequately pay the cost of a facility or a cost of living (COLA) rider, which increases the benefits annually, many times the benefits are inadequate to qualify for acceptance into a facility. Remember, the patient and family must financially qualify and if your plan only pays a small percentage of the costs, and the financials will not be enough to pay the balance monthly, the facility may decline you. Many of those who purchase Facility Only coverage either feel they have supportive family who will provide care for them at home, or they purchase this plan based on Premium alone. And when premium was the
decision maker, then, most likely addition financial resources will not be available when needed to provide the care. Of course, Medicaid qualified facilities must take you if they have space available. The Facility only plan can pay a Medicaid facility, which reduces the lien the State will levy on patient owned property, which is not collected until death of the owner or sale of the property. Compound or Flat are important words when it comes to the cost of living rider. A Compound rider will build benefits at a faster pace and a greater amount. The premiums are more costly, however if your family health history reveals that you may need the benefits earlier, it pays to select this option. With the consistent increase in cost of care, including either rider this is extremely important . Partnership or a regular L.T.C. plan can be important in some cases. A Partnership plan does not add premium to your costs, however it provides asset protection. It is merely a method of registering your plan with the state. Your assets are then
protected from “Spend down (which means the patient can only keep $2,000 of liquid assets to receive help from Medicaid). The amount of assets protected are based on the amount of coverage purchase for L.T. C. It certainly provides the family time to implement the best plan of care. Even if the patient goes into a Medicaid facility, money is available to spend on Concierge services. Certainly, not all plans are the same. First you must medically qualify and possibly incur a surcharge if health conditions exists. This is where a specialist not only can help define the type of benefits selected, but will also understand which companies will offer the best deal according to pre-existing physicians. Next week I will discuss alternative L.T. C. plans. Janice Gough is a Financial Advisor in C.V. We help provide the best solutions to your Financial World. Painless HIV Tests and Fun Prizes FREE
HIV Tests Available at the Mecca FRC Resource Fair on National Latino HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, October 15
OCTOBER 15
By Desert Star Weekly PALM SPRINGS, CA – On National Latino HIV/AIDS Awareness Day on October 15, the general public is invited to join Get Tested Coachella Valley/Hazte la Prueba Valle de Coachella for free HIV testing, giveaways and entertainment at the Mecca FRC Resource Fair from 2 to 6 p.m.
In an effort to reduce the spread of HIV in the Latino community, Get Tested Coachella Valley’s Mobile HIV Testing Clinic will offer confidential rapid oral swab HIV tests and $10 grocery gift cards for those who test, as well as fun giveaways like insulated lunch bags and water bottles for the general public.
As lead sponsor for this event, Get Tested Coachella Valley will also emcee part of the on-stage program to increase public knowledge about the virus and the importance of HIV testing. HIV is a critical public health concern in the Latino community. About 1 in 50 Latinos will be diagnosed with HIV during their lifetimes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Furthermore, Latinos made up about 16% of the U.S. population but accounted for 21% of new HIV infections nationally in 2010 -- a rate three times that of whites. It is an especially pressing concern in the Coachella Valley, where the rate of HIV is more than double the national rate and where Latinos comprise 55% of the local population, according to the latest U.S. Census. “We are fortunate that this year’s Mecca FRC Resource Fair falls on National Latino HIV/AIDS Awareness Day,” said Susan Unger, Project Director
of Get Tested Coachella Valley. “Our campaign is committed to making HIV testing an integral part of the healthcare picture in the Latino community – not only on this national awareness day but throughout the year. By accessing education and testing, members of the Latino community are empowered for good health.” The Mecca FRC Resource Fair connects local families -including those of Coachella Valley farm workers -- with more than 100 non-profit and public agencies in an effort to create healthy lifestyles and communities. Many of the participating agencies are Community Partners of the Get Tested Coachella Valley campaign. Between 1,500 and 2,000 people are expected to attend. The event will be held at the Mecca Family Service Center and Community Health Clinic (91-275 66th Ave., Mecca) on Wednesday, October 15 from 2 to 6 p.m.

Assess if there are any needs you and/or a partner have that are hiding away someplace, only coming to life when there’s deep conflict. Matt Lashey, their Bureau Chief says this location is more convenient than using studios in Los Angeles and Hollywood for reportage emanating from the Coachella Valley, 29 Palms and the Inland Empire. CoverEDGE is based in Las Vegas where their XENA, a 31 ft. Satellite Uplink and Production Vehicle are on standby for use at their brand new Palm Springs based studio. Lashey said that satellite media tours and video news releases promoting events and fresh products can be sent out “through our various connectivity sources in addition to interviews, Webcasts, product shots and training videos.” Their headquarters in Palm Springs has a private HD camera studio
equipped with professional lighting capable of real-time video transmission for live TV news interviews and training videos. Enthusiastic about establishing CoverEDGE in Palm Springs Lashey said, “ We have just officially opened and already transmitted interviews for networks such as CNN, MSBNC, Fox News, Al Jazeera America and Sun Network, Canadian Television.” Putting Palm Springs on the media maps with the capability of covering nonstop events in the Coachella Valley from the Palm Springs International Film Festival and Modernism Week to the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival and beyond should keep CoverEDGE Television News Services engaged 24/7. Stage Sizzles With “Kiss Me, Kate” Musical By Jack Lyons Theatre & Movie Critic Any time a theatre presents a Cole Porter musical, expectations run high. After all, we’re dealing with a giant of the American musical theatre. Porter is one of the most iconic and sophisticated composer/lyricists in Broadway history. A Cole Porter show borders on being almost bulletproof in the hands of a skilled director with a vision, and a talented cast committed to seeing that the vision is fulfilled. The Pasadena Playhouse launched its 2014/2015 season with an inspired production of “Kiss Me, Kate”, brilliantly directed by Playhouse Artistic Director Sheldon Epps, and a cast of seventeen wonderful singers, dancers and actors. More about the production in a moment Prior to the curtain going up the Playhouse audience was treated to a gala-like atmosphere where a special honor was awarded to Miss Diahann Carroll for her years of support and commitment to the Wells Fargo Theatrical Diversity Project. She was a true trailblazing actor and performer. She was the first African- American actor to have her own TV series, “Julia”. The beautiful, ageless and stunning looking 79 year-old actress, singer, and performer didn’t disappoint when she graciously accepted the award and made a few remarks to the audience. Another additional treat for the opening night attendees was the introduction of the “original Kate” of “Kiss Me, Kate” (1948), the lovely 99 and half years-young, star of Broadway and Hollywood, Miss Patricia Morrison. And seated
Company of Kiss Me, Kate. Photo by Earl Gibson III. next to her was the elegant and vibrant “Kate” of the USA touring company (1949), Ms. Anne Jeffreys. Both legends received a thunderous ovation. Also spotted congratulating the two actors were Jane Kaczmarek, French Stewart and Sharon Lawrence representing the “younger generation” of actors. The 2014 Pasadena Playhouse production of “Kiss Me, Kate” is a loving homage to the trailblazing African-American touring troupes of the early 20th century, who brought the work of Shakespeare not just to New York City, but to theatres all over the country. Famous actors such as Paul Robeson, Ira Aldridge, Jane White and Hattie McDaniel brought “literal color” to the great classical roles, opening up doors for others who would follow. In Sheldon Epps’ 2014 version, the musical begins to
the strains of a sultry, haunting Saxophone solo wafting over the audience as the ensemble company led by Hattie (Jenelle Lynn Randall) of dancers, singers and actors slowly begin to appear on stage in the prelude number “Another Op’nin, Another Show”, which quickly turns into fastpaced energetic dance number that sets up the audience for the high-octane numbers that follow. For anyone not familiar with the story just think of combining Shakespeare’s “Taming of the Shrew” with Cole Porter’s music and lyrics and you have “Kiss Me, Kate” If your still not on board, it’s the story of actors Fred and Lilli (Wayne Brady and Merle Dandridge respectively), who were once a married couple but are now divorced and starring in a musical version of Shakespeare’s “Taming of the Shrew” in Baltimore.
Armando Yearwood, Pat Towne, Kimberly Moore, Theresa Murray, Joanna A. Jones, Wayne Brady, Carlton Wilborn, Eric B. Anthony, Saudia Rashed, Jay Donnell, Shamicka Benn-Moser. Photo by Earl Gibson III.
All of the principal supporting actors in the production portray two characters both onstage and backstage as is traditional in a show that is performed as a play within a play. Dandridge is not only beautiful, she has the voice to match.. Her poignant solo “So in Love” is a real heartbreaker. Brady is a handsome, solid leading man, with a smooth baritone and the cockiness worthy of Petruchio’s through the ages. Their “Wunderbar” duet number is cleverly staged, affording the two stars to banter and needle each other while performing on stage where they must stay in character. It’s a delightful scene. Assisting Brady and Dandridge are principal cast members Lois/Bianca (Joanna A. Jones) in a series of scene stealing numbers: “Why Can’t You Behave?” with Bill/Lucentio (Terrance Spencer), “Tom, Dick, or Harry” with Jay Donnell as Hortensio, Eric B. Anthony as Gemmio and Spencer again and “Always True to You in My Fashion”, the latter being a sensational show-stopping 11 O’Clock Spot number performed with sass and impeccable timing by Jones. The stage fairly drips with sexuality in the sexy “Too Darn Hot” number performed by Paul (Rogelio Douglas Jr.) and the ensemble led by Hattie (Jenelle Lynn Randall). Other Porter classics include “From This Moment On” performed by General Howell (Pat Towne) and Lilli. There are always the comedy relief performers in musicals, and this terrific production is no
exception. Playing the two wiseguy/bag men enforcers are David Kirk Grant (the tall one) and Brad Blaisdell (the short one). Their “Brush Up Your Shakespeare” number, is cleverly and hilariously staged, and is always an anticipated crowd pleaser. This production has so many creative and inventive directorial touches by director Epps one may lose track of the count., but never the enjoyment. It was a wise decision to have a live orchestra for this splendid production. There is really no alternative when performing Cole Porter music other than a live orchestra in the pit to accompany the singers. It shows class and respect for the audience and is money well spent. Music Director Rahn Coleman and choreography by Jeffrey Polk are audiencepleasingly first rate. The technical credits are always strong at the Playhouse. Scenic Designer John Iacovelli’s dressing rooms set on movable wagons makes the set changes a piece of cake. The handsome costumes for the men, and the sexy-looking costumes for the ladies designed by David K. Mickelsen make for a visual feast. Lighting by Jared A. Sayeg and sound by Jon Gottlieb also complement this dazzling production. It’s an impressive and auspicious production to begin the 2014/2015 Playhouse Season, and one that should not be missed. “Kiss Me, Kate” runs through October 12, 2014.

Disney Fun on Film and DVD Disney’s “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day,” based on a children’s book by Judith Viorst, is a well crafted comedy that will tickle the funny bones of young and old alike. Viorst’s book, published in the ‘70’s, was only 32 pages long so the filmmakers have expanded the story, using the picture book as the first act of the film. This is followed by a completely original storyline that takes place the very next dayafter 11-year-old Alexander‘s truly miserable day. According to the director, Miguel Arteta, “We wanted to show a family having a truly awful impossible day. All things are going wrong and yet they come together and have each other’s backs. The ability to roll with and laugh sees them through.” As the story begins just about everything awful happens to Alexander (13-year-old Australian native Ed Oxenbould). First he gets gum stuck in his hair. Then when he arrives at school things go from bad to absolutely horrible. He tries to explain his terrible day to his upbeat family, but they always focus on the bright side of life. All of them, especially dad (Steve Carell “Little Miss Sunshine” and TVs “The Office”), tell him things will get better. No one seems to understand. Frustrated, Alexander wishes that just once they could know what his life was really like. The next day his wish actually comes true when the most awful, horrible things happen to the entire family. The results are hilarious. Jennifer Garner (“Dallas Buyers Club”) is Mom, who has a great job at a publishing company. 17-yearold Dylan Minnette (TVs “Lost”) plays Alexander’s super popular older brother; 16-year-old Kerris Dorsey (“Moneyball”) is his sister who is starring in the high school production of “Peter Pan” and the Vargas twins play baby brother Trevor. What is such great fun in this warm, funny family film is the way the family’s bad day is even more horrible than Alexander’s was. The filmmakers have expanded the still popular, but very short children’s book by Viorst, as they envision yet another truly horrible bad day that now involves the entire family. Steve Carell is endearing as the out of work dad with fabulous engineering credentials who is looking for a new job and career. In the meantime, he has become a stay at home dad becoming what the other Mom’s call a “Famie” (father-mommie) to his baby son. The misadventures throughout the film are truly www.desertstarweekly.com
laugh inducing. In fact, this is the funniest comedy I’ve seen all year. This delightful movie with the excellent long title is super fun for the entire family. You may want to encourage the youngsters to read the book prior to seeing the movie. From Disney, rated PG. After the screening at the El Capitan Theater on Hollywood Blvd., my husband and I decided to check out the theater’s Ghirardelli Ice Cream Parlor. I ordered the scrumptious looking banana split with chocolate, strawberry and vanilla ice cream topped with sauces and whipped cream and it was great. My husband opted for the butterscotch hot fudge sundae made with pecan ice cream smothered with butterscotch and golden almond nuggets, topped with whipped cream, chopped almonds and a cherry. I felt like a kid again because it’s been years since I’ve had a super banana split at an old-fashioned ice cream parlor. This was an added treat. The Ghirardelli Ice Cream Parlor also provides film goers the chance to buy all kinds of Disney’s goodies like toys, DVDs and Disney’s character pins. You can also trade Disney pins with the folks who work in the shop. While we were enjoying our ice cream delights I asked the three young boys at the table next to us how they enjoyed “Alexander‘s Terrible, Horrible, Very Bad Day.” They immediately replied, “awesome, funny and cool.” And indeed it was.

Information: Tell me more: The breakaway johnny-marr.com. modern rocker “Back in the Box” that opens “Playland” proves Artist: John Mellencamp to be the mere beginning of Title: Plain Spoken the thrills that Johnny Marr (Republic Records) has in store for listeners on You might like if you enjoy: his wonderful sophomore Bruce Springsteen’s album. The legendary English “Nebraska,” Bob Dylan guitarist (The Smiths, The The, Tell me more: With John Electronic, Modest Mouse) is on Mellencamp having scored an the top of his game here, with artistic triumph with his 2010 his mighty vocals and concise album “No Better Than This,” guitar work sharing top billing fans of the Rock and Roll Hall on one memorable track after of Famer might have wondered
where Mellencamp would turn next. The Indiana native answers that question clearly on the aptly-titled “Plain Spoken,” a mostly-dark look at life beyond the veneer of his successful 40-year career as a musician, actor and painter. Mellencamp, 62, sings with straightforward honesty about faith (“Sometimes There’s God”), divorce (“Tears in Vain”), loneliness (“The Isolation of Mister”) and political dishonesty (“Lawless Times”) against a sparse and acoustic sonic backdrop. Information: Mellencamp.com. Artists: The Quaker City Night Hawks, Trampled by Turtles, Joe Pug, more Title: Dead Man’s Town: A Tribute to Born in the U.S.A. (Lightning Rod Records) You might like if you enjoy: Bruce Springsteen, John Mellencamp Tell me more: Even Bruce
Springsteen’s most forceful rock songs lend themselves to acoustic arrangements so it’s no wonder that 30 years after the release of his biggest commercial success, the Boss’ “Born in the U.S.A.” gets the fullon Americana treatment. Apache Relay’s introspective take on “Cover Me,” the Quaker City Night Hawks’ delightful Dr. Johnflavored “Darlington County” and Joe Pug’s acoustic pianoanchored “Downbound Train” are early highlights on the 12song set, while Holly Williams’ ravishing “No Surrender” and Trampled by Turtles’ joyous “I’m Goin’ Down” shine on the latter part of the disc. Information: LightningRodRecords.com. Artist: Nikki Lane Title: All or Nothin’ (New West Records) You might like if you enjoy: Loretta Lynn, Wanda Jackson, First Aid Kit
Tell me more: Fans of authentic country have plenty of reason to celebrate nowadays with a burgeoning Americana and roots music movement shining a well-deserved light on a number of artists, including Southern California’s own Michael and the Lonesome Playboys and David Serby. While the majority of the leaders of the movement have been male, outlaw country singer Nikki Lane proves she is more than up to the challenge of staking a claim on the scene via her second full-length album “All or Nothin’.” The Nashville songstress brings a bona fide bite to her infectious material, whether singing about one-night stands (“Right Time,” “Sleep with a Stranger”) or heartache (“Want My Heart Back,” “Love’s On Fire”). S P O RT S Despite Lopsided Win, Palm Springs High School Angry BY DANIEL MARINELLI
Indians quarterback William Olvera relaying the play to his team. (Photo by Dan Marinelli)
THERMAL – Coming off of their first loss of the season two weeks ago, the Palm Springs High School Indians arrived at Coachella Valley High School looking to come back strong in their DVL opener last Friday. One of the desert’s best high school teams in 2014, the Indians, defeated the lackluster Arabs emphatically, 46-0, but unfortunately, the Indians ended up suffering
the worst loss of the night. Taking focus off of the impressive win, apparently before halftime, when the players and coaches were on the field, the Palm Springs locker room was looted. Expensive electronics, including pricy headphones, ipods, smartphones and money were stolen. After the game, Palm Springs head coach Dan Murphy appeared visibly upset and unavailable for comment,
however, Palm Springs High School athletic director Dennis Zink did lend his insight on the matter. “A bunch of our studentathletes are missing a lot of things,” Zink said. “We have the sheriffs here and they’re bringing in more people. We’re making a list of everything that’s missing. We are also working with Coachella Valley Unified and Coachella Valley High to try
to figure out how we get this stuff replaced.” A game did still take place and it would be normal to think that the break-in motivated the Indians to come out and destroy the Arabs but the score was 43-0 at halftime – before the players even found out anything was missing. With a blazing quick defense and the continued stellar play of quarterback William Olvera and do-it-all receiver Franklin Miller, Palm Springs (1-0 in DVL, 4-1 Overall) shutout a decent Arabs (0-2 in DVL, 3-3 Overall) team still trying to prove itself in the DVL. Behind a 50-yard interception return and a 43-yard punt return for touchdowns, Miller contributed 14 of the team’s staggering 29 first-quarter points. Senior receivers Ray Mullen and Riley Hagar each caught two touchdown passes, giving Olvera four touchdowns at the half. At the start of the second half, Palm Springs players and coaches were aware of what had happened in their locker room but instead of coming out firing on all cylinders, the Indians came out flat and only managed one field goal. The team was likely concerned about one thing with a 43-0 lead – getting off the field as fast as possible and filing a police report. Including his four touchdowns, Olvera finished
with 202 yards on 13 for 18 passes. Mullen finished with 149 receiving yards to go with his two touchdown catches. The Palm Springs offense was special on Friday but the defense looked superb and league-title worthy. Coachella Valley was held to just a stingy 89 yards rushing, amazingly small considering Arabs running back Carlos Medina ran for 293 yards against the Cathedral City Lions last week. Additionally, the Indians defense contained quarterback Darius Hulsey, (460 yards, 3 TDs last week) allowing no touchdowns and only 185 yards passing. The Indians are on the rise and followers of the Desert Valley League are counting down the days for what will likely be the conference championshipdeciding game the matchup with the DVL favorite La Quinta High School Blackhawks. Before Coach Murphy’s hungry team can think about the Blackhawks, Palm Springs has date with the Xavier Prep High School Saints in Palm Desert. It will be important for Palm Springs not to overlook this bump with an important meeting against La Quinta looming. The game will be at Xavier Prep at 7 pm. will be Bloch’s collaborator and cartoonist, Cynthia Meckl-Sloan, who gave visual life to Bloch’s witty view of slices of life here in our desert. “I’ve always taken the position that life should be lived with a smile,” said Bloch. “Sometimes just the smile, sometimes the smile with a
wink! I’ve tried to convey that philosophy in this book.” Born in Switzerland and raised in Paris, Bloch also came up with an original premise for a unique story which writer/ producer & fellow Valley resident Frank V. Furino used to pen the stage play, “Marilyn, Madness & Me.” The play premiered in October 8, 2014
Hollywood last September to glowing reviews. Cynthia Meckl-Sloan is a self-taught cartoonist who began drawing cartoons at the tender age of 8. “I used to study the cartoons because I wanted to draw like that,” said Sloan, who has authored a humorous play entitled “Omlet,” based on
Hamlet, and has also composed satirical poetry in the Mad Magazine style. Café des Beaux-Arts is located at 73-640 El Paseo, Palm Desert, CA 92260. For more information or reservations please call 760.346-0669 or visit online www.cafedesbeauxarts. com.

d n E e k v e e n e t Sum Up W FIGHT LIKE A GIRL
Story and Photos by Pat Krause The “Fight Like a Girl” Charity event was a great kickoff evening for October Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Highlights of the evening included a reception, shopping garden with exhibitors and a raffle. There was a gourmet dinner with a fashion show that included models wearing attire from local businesses. A special part of the fashion show was when Cancer Survivors walked the runway. The event was held at the Riviera Palm Springs on October 3rd. There was also a live auction of $4,000 earrings, all to raise money for “Young Survivors Coalition” which is a global organization that is dedicated to help the younger women deal with Breast Cancer. Breast Cancer is typically associated with the older generation, and monies were raised for “Bucket List Wishes.” The event was hosted by Caroldean Ross, who recently lost a dear friend to Cancer. She said it inspired her to find “Charity GodMother” to bring joy where there is usually none. John Callahan from “All My Children” and “General Hospital” soap opera fame was the Emcee and Master of Ceremonies for the night. Five Time Women’s World Boxing Champion, Mia St.John spoke at the event and hosted a Q&A. Brian Wanzek, aka, Bella da Ball, took over duties of Ambassador, greeting guests and being the auctioneer for the live auction. Dr. Andew Ordon and Dr. Ritu Chopra from “The Doctors” TV show and Specialists Dr. Laura Lee, Dr. Frederick Eko and Dr. Deborah Rubin held an informative symposium. Allison Sachs from the Luci Curci Cancer Center at Eisenhower Center introduced the guests and hosted the Q&A. The doctors spoke about the advances in treatment, therapy, medicines and mental health dealing with breast cancer. Insurance options were discussed and also the recent “Womens Health Care Act.” Everyone has in someway been touched by Cancer when you personally, family or friends are diagnosed with it. Caroldean Ross spoke after the event to thank everyone for their efforts to bring about this wonderful evening. The sponsors, supporters, models and all the local businesses for their participation in the style show with their beautiful fashions. Local woman, Tristan Milanovich, produced the exciting style show. Some of the models got into the act by dancing down the runway and making it a fun part of the show.

THE MAMAS AND PAPAS
Mackenzie Phillips

Story and Photos by Pat Krause Mackenzie Phillips, The eldest daughter of local personality Papa John Phillips of the Mamas and Papas fame, spoke at the dedication of the new Addiction and Recovery resource section of the Palm Springs Public Library. Mackenzie spoke of her long struggle with addiction and how it is still a day to day struggle that she has to call on her self-intervention to cope. Mackenzie told about the many times she was in treatment, 11 times to be exact. A victim of sexual abuse and incest and drug abuse made her struggle with her demons ever present. She said that when her father died, she could find peace and stop her addiction, but she was wrong there. Mackenzie Phillips is best known as the wild child teenager on One Life to Live. On her way to a reunion taping for the show, she was caught at the airport with her Stash and left in Handcuffs. Her retelling of the story was infused with hilarious parts to the story that had the guests laughing with her. She said she had worn a pair of pants with a metal button and had her drugs in that pocket when she went through security at the airport. The audience gasped as they knew metal was going to get her caught. She said, There I was in handcuffs in a funny way but thanked the airline as that time was the wake up call she needed to get her life back on track and maybe even saved her life. Her stories were told off the cuff with no script. She is only comfortable with telling it like it was without a written piece of paper to make it sound rehearsed and not real. These were her stories, and she told them with gusto, animation and humor. Her stories were very enlightening. She hopes they will give others the strength and courage to deal with their addiction as she is at present an advocate at the Pasadena Recovery Center. She said she was tired of being the BROKEN one and at this moment in time can hold her head high by passing along the love by standing with her brothers and sisters in recovery. There was so much more to tell about what she spoke about and how she told it. She remarked that addicts needed to find a new outlet in life. Some find it a relief to get off the roller coaster of addiction and find some peace. She touched everyone in her speech, even those who are not addicts but know someone who is. She signed copies of her new book, “High On Arrival.” The book tells more of her stories and struggles and should be a great reading book. The event was sponsored by Michaels House and Heroes in Recovery and was held at the Palm Renee Baribeau from Michaels House and Jeannie Kays Palm Springs Public Library on Sunday Oct. 5th.
