The Apple Watch

Apple unveiled the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus the Apple Watch smart-watch and a new mobile payments platform.

Apple today announced its long-rumored wearable device, the Apple Watch, which actually uses the Apple Symbol () followed by “Watch” in its name.

Apple’s Watch is designed to be both fashionable and functional, available in an array of different color and materials with six different types of watch straps that are easily interchangeable.

Prices for the device, which will be available in early 2015, start at $349.

There are six different Watch face colors and materials: Stainless Steel, Silver Aluminum, 18-Karat Yellow Gold, Space Black Stainless Steel, Space Gray Aluminum, and 18-Karat Rose Gold.

By Angela Monroe LA QUINTA -- Terrifying moments Monday morning for drivers as many had to flee their vehicles to escape to safety.

Abandoned vehicles were strewn on streets in La Quinta and Palm Desert.

Water also rushed into homes; clean-up will continue for days.

Severe flooding devastates parts of the valley.

“It was just like a river, it started getting higher and faster and my car was like floating on the water,” said Bermuda Dunes resident, Alexandria Young.

Chaos as people abandon their vehicles, fleeing the rising water for higher ground.

“We saw people getting out of their cars through their windows, and we decided to do the same thing,” said Bay area resident, Maritza Carranza.

Carranza waded through the deep water with her little dog.

“I had to carry him, and my

possessions...here comes the water!”

Good samaritans took time to help stranded drivers.

“I was coming to cruise around, to get some information, but then people needed help, so I started pushing cars out and stuff like that,” said Palm Desert resident, Connor Brett.

All of Apple’s Watches can be customized with an array of different digital watch faces to suit different tastes. Each of the watches is available in two separate screen sizes for different sized wrists: 38mm and 42mm, and the watches have a flexible, durable sapphire display.

ThE AppLE WATch sensing technology and is able to determine the difference between a tap and a press, allowing for a new range of contextually specific controls. A second physical button next to the digital crown lets users tap to bring up a list of contacts and then communicate with friends by sending quick drawings, messages, and animated emoji.

It’s also possible to send a heart beat, drawn from the watch’s sensors.

Inside the device, there’s a new Taptic Engine that allows users to hear and feel the design of the user interface. According to Apple, users will be able to feel and respond to notifications “easily and intuitively” through the Taptic Engine.

A new custom designed chip, the S1 processor, integrates many subsystems into one singular module. The back of the watch is constructed from zirconia with four sapphire lenses that can detect pulse rate. There is also a gyroscope and accelerometer, which helps

the Apple Watch provide a comprehensive picture of daily activity.

The back of the device is also the home of Apple’s charging solution, which uses a MagSafe with inductive charging. The user will not have to worry about exposed contacts or aligning the charger properly. Apple has declined to comment on battery life at this point.

Because it is a watch, the device is designed to keep accurate time, continually checking its internal clock against the definitive global time standard with the “precision found in GPS satellites.” Apple’s Watch is designed to improve the health and fitness of its users, and thus it is able to keep track of a variety of health metrics, accurately tracking movement and a wide range of activities. An included Activity App gives users an overview of their daily fitness levels, with three “rings” representing calories burned, exercise done,

and how often a break has been taken from sitting.

There’s also a Workout App, which shows real-time stats like time, distance, calories, and pace when working out. It’s designed to encourage users to meet and beat goals, and over time, the Watch is said to be able to act as a personal trainer, suggesting new fitness goals.

Apple’s Watch will support third-party apps, with support for both extended notifications from the iPhone and apps that run directly on the device. The Watch does rely heavily on the iPhone and does not function as a standalone device as it is designed to work with Apple’s new Continuity features, letting users shift tasks from one device to another with ease.

The Apple Watch does include support for NFC, and it will function with Apple’s new payment initiative, Apple Pay, which lets users make secure payments from the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 plus, and Apple Watch.

At its special media event today, Apple announced the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and the 5.5inch iPhone 6 Plus. Apple is touting a “Retina HD Display” on both phones, as the 4.7inch iPhone 6 features a 1334 x 750 display at 326 pixelsper-inch while the iPhone 6 Plus features a 1920 x 1080 display at 401 ppi. The iPhone 6 is said to have more than 1 million pixels, while the iPhone 6 Plus is said to have 2 million pixels.

The new models feature a number of hardware changes, including a chassis that is 6.9 mm thin for the iPhone 6 and 7.1 mm for the iPhone 6 Plus. Both models feature the next-generation 64-bit A8 chip, which features 2 billion transistors on a 20nm processor. The A8 delivers 25% faster CPU performance and is 13% smaller and 50%

more energy efficient when compared to the A7. The device also comes with a next-generation M8 motion coprocessor which can now estimate distance and elevation changes with a new barometer.

Apple states that the iPhone 6 will get 50 hours of battery life for audio, 11 hours for video, 11 hours for WiFi browsing and 10 hours for LTE browsing. With its even bigger body, the iPhone 6 Plus will get 80 hours of battery life for audio, 14 hours for video, and 12 hours for Wi-Fi and LTE browsing. The iPhone 6 now also includes Voice Over LTE (VoLTE) technology, including 20 LTE band, as well as 802.11ac Wi-Fi, which delivers 3x faster Wi-Fi and support for Wi-Fi calling.

The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus also support a new

camera system with a brandnew 8-megapixel sensor, along with a circular true tone flash. Apple is also touting “Focus Pixel” technology, which allows the lens to move in and out to better determine autofocus points.

The camera also features nextgen tone mapping and noise reduction. Apple also says the camera is complimented by a new gyroscope and image stabilization built into the A8 processor. Exclusive to the iPhone 6 Plus is an optical image stabilization system.

As for video capabilities, both devices shoot in 1080p at 30fps and 60fps, along with 240fps slo-mo video, which is up from 120fps on the iPhone 5s. The front-facing FaceTime HD camera has also received a new sensor with a f2.2 aperture that lets in 81% more light. Users can

Is the Bull Market Really Running Out of Steam?

By Kevin Powell This is a question I get on a regular basis. I wanted to provide a little more information on the current bull market and why I am starting to become concerned.

Since 1930, only three bull markets have lasted longer than

the current one. The average bull market lasts for three years and nine months. This bull is nearly six years old.

The stock market PE is 19.91. This is approaching the high end of historical averages.

For comparison sakes, the S&P 500 PE on 1.1.2008 was 21.46.

It was 27.55 on 1.1.2001 and it was 18.01 on 1.1.1987.

The stock market dividend yield in previous market declines was near the bottom of a cycle or falling. This happened in 1930, 1987 and in 2001. It did not occur in 2008. Dividend yields are low today and have

steadily declined over the past five years.

Another sign of a slowing market is falling corporate profits. However, we’re not seeing that as profits continue to grow and are forecasted to remain strong in the near term.

An investment principle that I try to follow is that the crowd is never right. Bullish sentiment was at its highest level in 27 years in February of this year.

Based on recent studies, more investors are bullish today than at nearly any other time in history. Remember the crowd is rarely right!

From 2011 through earl y 2013 investors pulled more money out of stocks than they invested. Another miss by the crowd. Since March of 2013, money flowing back into the markets has been very strong.

It remains to be seen if they are right this time.

Margin is when investors borrow money to purchase stocks. Margin debt hit an all-time high of $487 BILLION earlier this year. Margin debt since that point has continued to decline. Successive months of falling margin debt also occurred before large corrections in 1987, 2000 and 2007.

Rising interest rates are a risk to a bull market. We are not seeing rates rise just yet even though it is widely anticipated that they will start to rise in 2015.

These are all reasons that are concerning and I haven’t even mentioned the current geopolitical risks around the globe nor the rapidly approaching mid-term US elections.

I am still optimistic on the stock market longer term. One reason is that so many investors, including many professionals, have missed much the current bull market. That means if we see a pullback, there is a lot of idle money that could be waiting to buy stocks on the cheap, possibly driving prices back up. I’m not trying to predict a stock market decline. I just think it’s prudent that investors consider taking a little less risk for a while. I don’t believe we are facing anything close to the Great Recession of 2008 (approximate 50% loss in a few months) but things are likely to slow down a bit.

In Memory of Sam Sloneker

By Art Kunkin Mr. Life Extension This week I report the sad news that our good friend Sam Sloneker is no longer with us because his cancer defeated him.

Sam was known to thousands of local residents as the conductor of great drum circles and his psychological practice as a very competent therapist.

Sam played congas for some of the top Latin bands in the country throughout his career.

The list of the bandleaders he’s performed or recorded with includes such Latin musicians as Cal Tjader, Cuban pianists Rene Touzet and Joe Loco, vibraphonists Bobby Montez and Tony Martinez (known as Pepino from “The Real McCoys” TV series). That list also includes celebrities’ Trini Lopez and “Cha Cha King” Manny Lopez.

Sam was born in Stockton, California and moved to the West Los Angeles area when he was seven years old. “I remember Lawrence Welk being big in our household,” said Sloneker with a chuckle during an interview with Johnny Meza published in the Desert Entertainer. “I also remember hearing music from Frankie Lane, Jo Stafford and Johnny Ray, pop music from the ‘50’s.”

In junior high, he began playing violin in the orchestra.

“By the time I got to high school, I was listening to jazz. I remember taking a trip with my friends to

Drum City in Hollywood. It was there that I saw drum instructor Mike Pacheco demonstrating a pair of bongos, and I thought, hey; I could really get into those.”

Sloneker then began lessons on Latin percussion and eventually took over the instruction chair from Pacheco after only a year. “I had received a scholarship to attend Cal Tech in Pasadena, but after the music bug hit, I decided to concentrate on congas and attended Santa Monica City College.”

“One day I got a call to sub for Luis Kant, who was Cal Tjader’s congero. Tjader almost fell out of his chair when he saw this blonde-haired white-boy show up to rehearse. I had already listened to all of his records, so I knew where all the cuts came on his songs.”

Performing in bands during the mid-50s and throughout the 60s at many clubs in Hollywood, North Hollywood and the San Fernando Valley, Sam honed his skills on the congas by learning Cuban and Puerto Rican hands techniques. He made side trips to Las Vegas to perform in the lounge at the Sahara Hotel.

Sam later worked in marketing and as a freelance photographer for a few years. Sloneker also studied transformational therapies, receiving certification as a clinical hydrotherapist. He had a private practice employing rebirth, hypnotherapy, neuron-linguistic programming and thought field therapy.

After moving to the desert in 1995, Sam performed with Purple Mountain Matinee, Michael Mucklow, Shawn Mafia and the Ten Cent Thrills, Gregory and Peggy Satori, Mojave Bluez, Eclectica, The Greasewood Band, The Barking Pupfish, Steve Browns “There Be Pirates,’ Reallyshoos “Zydeco Band,” Dennis McDade’s “Jazz Quartet”

and many others.

In 2002, Sam co-founded the Afro-Cuban jazz inspired group Ritmo Loco. They played their first public engagement at the Water Canyon Coffee Company in Yucca Valley. The band consisted of Bob Garcia on guitar, Owen Willingham on keyboards, Marv Schmelling on bass, Dennis McDade on drums and Sloneker on congas and Latin percussion.

Slonecker also appeared with Alex A. and the Desert All-Stars at Pappy & Harriets in Pioneertown. In recent years, Sam has facilitated many drum circles at the Joshua Tree Retreat Center.

Sam was recently married to Joan Johnstone at Lou Gerhardt’s Thursday morning talk. Sam will be missed. ___________________________ Art Kunkin is the 86 year young journalist who published and edited the alternative weekly newspaper The Los Angeles Free Press starting in 1964, later becoming president of the Philosophical Research Society.

He currently is a member of the Advisory Board of The Institute of Mentalphysics, also known as the Joshua Tree Retreat Center.

By Carolyn W. Gaines On September 6, 2014, Adrien Broner and Emmanuel Taylor stepped in a “Show Time Bout”ring that says clearly, and the Winner is Mr. Broner at U.S. Bank Arena in Cincinnati, Ohio.

These wonderful two fighters took us back to the days of Ali and Frazier. On a special class of boxing news, Broner and Taylor were connected to their high-energy

source flowed just like “Thrilla in Manilla” September 30th, 1975 with Ali and Frazier. Sexy treat of the evening was Mr. Adrien Broner whom stated to ‘Show Time” I Am Adrien Broner, And I Am A Fighter’’.

Broner vs Taylor was September’s Big T ime Boxing event on “Show Time” sponsored by Corona Extra, Golden Boy, and AT&T., Taylor started fighting at age 8. Broner had been wearing

boxing gloves since 4 years old. Broner wants to be the next Floyd May-weather. It certainly looks like Broner has displayed to the boxing world that he can, and he will be the upcoming Floyd May-weather.

Let’s chat about a few of the rounds on September 6th, 2014. Broner headlined, 13 events in his Home-town Cincinnati, Ohio. Broner had a High level of frequencies of beautiful energy. Round 4

was Broner’s best his right hand went down the middle toward Taylor. Broner was throwing more business punches than Taylor. Taylor was busier in round 5 than 4 with his physical energy. Taylor was showing his fans that he was coming back in round 5. Taylor was exchanging punches with Broner, and Taylor made round 5 a very close round. Taylor landed some punches. In Round 6, both fighters took turns to connect to their higherenergy source that vibrates fast to win the fight. Adrien, in round seven tagged Taylor with a right jab. Taylor got control of his magic moments in the 8 round while Broner leaning on rope. Broner was showing his Ali 1975 skills while schooling his opponent the well mannered, Taylor.

Broner and Taylor high energy fight turned out to be a very good fight. Broner was still winning in round 9 by two points. Broner is right-handed and did very good work in the 9th round. Taylor and Broner are exchanging heavy, hardhitting punches in Round 10.

Broner ended round 10 with jabs, upper cuts, and speed hitting punches on Taylor.

Round 11 Broner hitting at Taylor’s shoulders, but it takes a lot of speed to hit shoulder punches. Broner got cut for the first time in his pretty boxing career, and he ended round 11 with a cut over his right eye. The last round 12 of the night Taylor is trying his best to give a good a count in this fight.

Emmanuel tried his best to sting like a Bee, but Adrien was the ‘One’ that painted a famous picture for ‘Show Time’, and his World-Fans that he is young, pretty like ex-Super Star Muhammad Ali. Adrien gave his fans a sting like a Bee-Ali’s performance in the 21st Century Boxing News Game. Ha! Ha! Finally, Eric Gomez, Vice President of Golden Boy Promotions said,” Everyone knows that Adrien Broner is a Super Star because of all the things he does in the ring, and What makes Ardien so great is that he will fight anyone. He has never turned down an opponent. Few fighters have done what he has done in his career. He already has Hall of Fame career and talent.” Adrien Broner career is comparable to Hall of Famed Blues Legends guitarists, vocalists B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Blind Boy Fuller, and LeadBelly, whom are all known for not turning down Blues Concert dates since 1889, 1950s. 1960s into 2014. Broner and Taylor showed us that Hard Work pays-off like George Foreman, Marvin Hagler, Sugar Ray, and the Moneyman Floyd Mayweather knows best.

Extensive Damage Sustained to Valley Radio Stations

By Desert Star Staff Thousand Palms, California : The recent Monday morning rain storm resulted in damage to local radio stations KXPS “Team 1010” and KPSF “Money Radio 1200”. Reports from a weather station atop Edom Hill, north of Varner Road indicated that over 22 inches of rain fell in the early morning hours before 8am, an unprecedented amount, causing a mudslide and eroding a significant portion of the hillside. The slide closed Varner Road, and damaged the tower site of the two radio stations knocking them both off the air until late afternoon on Monday.

“Our station engineers worked feverishly to get the stations back on the air.”

says station General Manager Jeffry O’Brien. “We expect to be on at lower power with potential outages until permanent repairs can be made”.

The outage came as Team 1010 was planning the debut of their popular Monday Night Football, live broadcast from The Beer Hunter, with local Team 1010 sports radio host Julie Buehler. “The event and broadcast will go on as planned, regardless of whether the station stays on the air” says O’Brien. The stations programming is also carried live on the internet at team1010.com and is heard on mobile phones on the Team 1010 app.

The two stations are owned by CRC Media West,

LLC. Company president Ron Cohen says, “We’re all grateful that the engineers were able to get to the site, assess the damage, and begin repairs.” The storm washed out all roads to the site including Varner road which still remains closed.

Theresa Rebeck Comedy Satire On Stage

By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic The lure of show business is magnetic and all-consuming if you’re an alpha male or female. Plays and Hollywood movies are usually about young and hungry actors with a burning fire in the belly to perform anything, anywhere.

Theresa Rebeck is a playwright and screenwriter w i t h c re d i t s o n a n d off Broadway, and on Television. She’s also a bit of a darling with the younger set, thanks to the more modern onthe-nose-dialogue she gives her characters (translation: beaucoup F-bombs). Stories and subject matter that attract and peak her interest are more in tune with the 25 to 40 yearold age demographic (she’s 56). We are not watching the type of a comedy play your father and grandfather enjoyed.

And, she is a fierce supporter and activist in the movement to employ more female writers in every aspect of the arts. She’s smart, clever, and popular.

“Seminar”, written by Rebeck, and directed by Desert Theatre Works cofounder and DTW’s artistic Director Lance PhillipsMartinez, is currently on the stage of the Arthur Newman Theatre in Palm Desert. The play explores the passion of writers, novelists, and authors instead of actors who once

were the favorite characters of choice by playwrights and screenwriters.

The story in short, is set in present day New York City, and follows four young aspiring writers: Kate (Mari Kerber); Martin (Gabriel Lawrence); Douglas (Tanner Lieser); and Izzy (Brittney De Leon Reyes) each of whom have paid a $5000 fee to be included in Professor Leonard’s (Luke Rainey) ten week long writing seminar.

The action takes place in Kate’s parent’s upper west side nine-bedroom apartment that affords plenty of space for the group’s raging hormones, heated literary discussions and critiques of each other’s work to take place. Also, the apartment affords the group the time and place to dissect the jaded, cynical, and acerbic Leonard’s background and history in the New York literary world when he’s not around. He was once a promising new talent but instead of growing as a writer he sputtered, crashed and burned after just two novels. And his passion for writing never returned.

Instead, he became a sought after writing coach and guru to aspiring young talent. But, his students had better come to his seminars with skin and egos as thick as elephant hides. He berates, he scolds,

he goads the students to look inward and to “suffer a little” for their craft and their future profession. “Seminar” is a blistering satire on the aspiring writer genre.

The ensemble cast throw themselves into their portrayals with gusto, sometimes, a little too much gusto. But that is not necessarily all their own doing. This is one of Rebeck’s lightweight plays and evening’s in the theatre. There is very little new ground being broken here. The one dimensional characters are shallow and uninteresting; failing to engage me enough that I found myself unable to root for any of

them. Having said that Luke Rainey as Leonard, has a very poignant and introspective five minute monologue in the second act that delves into the scary and frustrating lifestyle of professional writers. It’s an illuminating and instructive peek into the professional writing world.

By the same token Gabriel Lawrence as Martin, gives us the viewpoint of the tortured aspiring young writer in a lengthy first act monologue who is unsure of his ability to write meaningful stories and characters, and as a result, hesitates in participating in Leonard’s bruising exchanges

when critiquing the writing of his students. Leonard’s trial-by-fire method is too intimidating for the men of the class but not for the young women who seem to have a secret weapon that protects them from the Leonard’s of the world ( humm, I wonder what that three letter weapon could it be?).

“Seminar” is not a study in intellectual rigor by a long shot, but it can be an entertaining evening of theatre, if one goes not expecting to challenge the gray matter in one’s head. The c o m e d y r u n s t h ro u g h September 13, 2014

By Desert Star Staff Gold, Iron and Steel: A Metallic History of the Morongo Basin, is the theme for the fall Art in Public Places exhibition at the Twentynine Palms Visitor Center and Chamber of Commerce, 73484 29 Palms Hwy., downtown Twentynine Palms.

Desert artists may submit one original piece of art for possible inclusion in the group exhibition, and are asked to deliver their artwork to the visitor center on Friday, Sept.

26, between the hours of 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Artwork must depict or be inspired by the theme, focusing on the history of metal in the desert. Subjects can range from gold mines, stamp mills, tin roofs, miners’ shacks, barbed wire, railroad spikes, rusted vintage vehicles, to iron sculptures, steel gates, fences, and anything in between. Artists are invited to stretch their imagination and consider the life and role of metal in the desert.

Media can include painting, watercolor, mixed media, photography, and three-dimensional work such as assemblage and

sculpture. All work must be ready to mount or hang with professional wire, must be offered for sale, and should be suitable for viewing by the general public.

Artists unable to deliver artwork on Friday, Sept. 26, can make prior arrangements to deliver artwork earlier by calling the Chamber at (760) 367-3445, 10-4 weekdays only.

An opening art reception is planned for Friday, Oct. 3, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m., with refreshments and music by Randy Godfrey. The show runs from October through December 2014.

The gallery at the Twentynine Palms Visitor Center and Chamber of Commerce is open daily at the corner of the highway and Desert Queen, downtown Twentynine Palms.

The Inspiring Legacy of Anne Frank

By Pamela Price The best way to spend 60 minutes when you are in Los Angeles is to visit Anne-A Premier Experiential Exhibit created by the Simon Wiesenthal Center at the Museum of Tolerance. This onehour interactive exhibit explores the short life of Anne Frank, who died before her 16th birthday, in 1945 in Bergen-Belson, a Nazi concentration camp. Her diary began in 1942, with the last entry recorded on August 1, 1944.

“The Diary of a Young Girl,” , a book based on her diary first published in The Netherlands in 1947 and now translated into 70 languages have taken of life if its own. It was awarded three Oscars in 1959 three Emmys, a Pulitzer Prize for Drama and in 1957 a Golden Globe for the Best Mini-Series on Television. The exhibit is both thought-provoking and historically accurate.

Designed by the Yazdani Studio of Cannon Design with films by Cortina Productions

and Moriah Films it frames Anne Frank’s short life through a narrated by Hailee Steinfeld; an Academy Award nominated actress. You almost feel as if you know her. The drama is an awakening for those unfamiliar with her diary, which symbolizes the epitome of anti-Semitism, intolerance and persecution during World War II. Anne did not survive the Holocaust, but her precious diary did. She was one of the one and one-half million Jewish children who perished in the Holocaust.

After living in hiding in Amsterdam, she and seven others, including her mother, father and sister were discovered by the Nazis; left behind in this secret annex was her diary.

The impact of Anne’s diary, a small red and white checkered book, is filled with her Anne’s Room in the Secret Annex Photo by Benny Chan/Fotoworks youthful impressions, hopes and fears, while she was a victim of the intense racial unleashed, during WWII. of hope and love, while surviving and religious persecution Anne’s remarkable attitude, in a confined space with limited contact to the outside world is mesmerizing. She writes of a chestnut tree she sees from her window, never having the freedom to inhale fresh air, attend school or visit a friend. She dreamed of surviving to see the War end and resuming her life yet she died of typhus shortly before the Libertion in 1945.

The exhibit is a timeline of events and began in the 1930s when the Frank family moved to Amsterdam from Frankfurt, Germany as the oppression of the Jewish people worsened as a result of Adolph Hitler and the rise of the Nazi party and progressively worsened.

33Rd Season With “Fallen Angels”

By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic When a theatre decides to present a Noel Coward play be it in the San Diego area, or anywhere else for that matter, it had better have a director with the understanding and appreciation for the gifted and prodigious playwright (more than 50 plays), from Teddington, Middlesex England.

Coward was not only a bold and stylish writer of English drawing room comedies and dramas of wit and bite, he was also an equal opportunity offender; skewering England’s upper class society in particular – a class he yearned to join, and eventually did, becoming Sir Noel Coward in 1969. He more than most playwrights of the 20th century best understood and reflected the uniqueness of his fellow countrymen; presenting their quirks and idiosyncrasies, warts and all, as well as focusing on their finest hours; becoming rich and famous in the bargain.

North Coast Rep Company, of Solano Beach, CA, launched its 33rd season last weekend and hit the ground running with Noel Coward’s delightful spin on the 1920’s comedy-ofmanners genre “Fallen Angels”.

This wonderfully hilarious and fast-paced romp has the very

good fortune to have San Diegobased director Rosina Reynolds at the helm.

Reynolds, an actor/director and Coward aficionado, has her creative fingerprints all over this entertaining and stylishly directed comedy that is chock-full of deft and inventive directorial touches. The production also is blessed with a cast that knows its way around English drawing room farce when they find themselves in one. More about them later.

The story in short, set in the Jazz Age, is about two wealthy upper-class young women and their two clueless husbands.

The bored wives whose home sex lives have stalled after five years are tempted and energized by the news of the return to England of a former French lover who bedded them both before they were married. This is fertile ground for Coward to mine the “seven deadly sins” on stage, and he does so with verve, style, and panache. Toss into the mix a dry-witted, scene-stealing house maid who apparently is always right on all domestic issues, who, at times, plays and accompanies herself on the baby grand piano in the living room, as well as serve the meals. Well, when that happens, one has a recipe for a madcap evening of

Julia played by Joanna Strapp, is the personification the typical bored female Coward leading lady: spoiled, attractive, rich, lithe, liberated, and ready for an adventure. Liam is only 5 years old but has had serious cancer, Stage 4 neuroblastoma since age 3. He has endured Radiation, Chemotherapy, and they have damaged his heart. He is a picture of health as he was like any other five years old at the reception. chatting with people and playing the hostess serving water to the guests. He was giving high 5s to guests but sometimes the play hurt his hand as his skin is very tender due to the chemo treatments. You would not know he is a cancer survivor so far as the cancer is currently under control.

During their stay in the Desert, they visited the Living Desert, ate dinner at Copley’s restaurant, Spa day at Bien O’Brien. The family stayed at the stunning Colony 29 resorts donated by McLean Property Rentals and Colony 29 owners.

Local Business and art dealer, Rick Pantele, a cancer survivor organized and online campaign, GoFundMe, which created a trip for Liam and his family to San Diego and Palm Springs. Laim and family got to see the ocean, visited legoland and the USS Essex and saw a Padres game.

underscored by impeccable timing. Summer Spiro playing best friend Jane, is a bundle of bored energy as well, but has a penchant for martinis that soon gets the two women involved in a classic drinking scene that is one of the highlights of the evening.

Strapp and Spiro have wonderful onstage chemistry that has them feeding-off each other. It’s a delight to watch them work.

Jacquelyn Ritz as Saunders the maid, shines in her scenestealing moments, when singing and playing the piano in front of guests, much to the chagrin of Julia and her husband, stick in-the-mud, Fred played with controlled frustration by Thomas Miller. Jane’s priggish husband Willie played by Jason Maddy is appropriately aghast at the shenanigans going with their two wives while he and Fred have been golfing all day.

I last saw Maddy in SD REP’s excellent production of “Red”.

His co-starring portrayal there is 180 degrees opposite from his Willie character in “Angels”.

As for the mysterious French lover Maurice Duclos played

by Richard Baird, Maurice only makes one entrance at the end

of the play, but we couldn’t say good night without him. All the men have their moments, but the evening definitely belongs to the ladies of “Fallen Angels”.

In the technical credits department, director Reynolds leads a creative team consisting of Scenic Designer Marty Burnett, who provides a rich looking London apartment, with plenty of space for the actors to perform their magic. The lighting design by Matt Novotny complements the costumes of Alina Bokovikova. Also, it’s always nice to see attention paid to the little details like real tea sets and spot-on props, plus lights that can be seen when doors open in the daylight or when characters leave a room. Very few people in real life just wander off or exit into darkness. Small details like these are what separate good shows from great shows.

‘A Long Way Down’ and TV on DVD

“A Long way Down,” based on Nick Hornby’s best-selling novel, is the story of four people planning to commit suicide on New Year’s Eve. This, according to the narrative, is a night when many people contemplate taking their own lives.

As the movie begins, Pierce Brosnan is the first to arrive at a London rooftop intending to take a flying leap into oblivion. As he stands on the ledge, he is joined

by Toni Collette, who also plans to jump, but she tells him to take his time. She can wait. As they chat Imogen Poots shows up, followed by Aaron Paul in this black comedy that explores why this foursome wants to end it all. As they chat they eventually decide to halt their plans for six weeks to see what might happen.

Who knows, they may even reconsider hanging in there in contrast to ending it all. Somehow their bizarre situation is leaked to the press who begins to take an avid interest in all four, making matters worse.

While the premise sounds bleak, it is handled with humor and heart as we get to know this mismatched foursome as they get to know one another.

Bonus material includes deleted scenes, outtakes, a feature in the making of the film and more. Rated R for language.

What makes this series so much fun for viewers is the combination of comedy, crime and homicide.

Historic Reissues Shed Light on Rock Pioneers

Big Star’s first two album releases and the lone album from Coachella Valley-spawned Billy Thermal have just been reissued and showcase two groundbreaking artists at the peak of their creative powers.

that met with universal critical praise but limited commercial success due to the failure of the Memphis, Tennessee outfit’s label to successfully market and distribute their albums. Time has been kind to Big Star’s legacy, with the Replacements, R.E.M., the Bangles and Wilco all citing the influence of Big Star. Stax Records has just reissued Big Star’s first two albums, with both the debut “#1 Record” and sophomore effort “Radio City” boasting a mix of rousing rockers and reflective ballads adding up to a sonic brew often credited as the birth of power pop. hit for Linda Ronstadt in 1980) , but his impressive style of songwriting which would go on to yield hits for Roy Orbison (“I Drove All Night”), the Bangles (“Eter nal Flame”), Cyndi Lauper (“True Colors”) and the Pretenders (“I’ll Stand by You”) is fully on display here. Anyone who is a fan of early New Wave acts such as Blondie and the Cars will definitely want to wrap their ears around Billy Thermal. The driving “I Tell You My Dream,” electrifying “Control” and infectious “Mirror Man” still shine bright 35 years after these tracks were recorded.

Even with hiccups and browser issues aside, however, other gadget geeks reported seeing not Apple CEO Tim Cook when they tried to tune into the broadcast, but instead a colorful message screen that advertised the day’s event but did nothing more.

“Perhaps Apple should have unveiled a new live-stream,” Jeff Elder wrote for the Wall Street Journal during Tuesday’s event.

According to his report, web surfers who did manage to catch the stream on Apple’s website — or at least part of it — complained of losing connection after a few minutes of watching.

Mark Nunnukohoven, the Ontario-based vice president of cloud and emerging technologies for Trend Micro, was one of many irate onlookers who didn’t miss a beat as the stream seemed to endlessly suffer from glitches and goof ups.

“Someone is getting fired,” he tweeted during one part of Tuesday’s doomed broadcast.

“I wish I was joking.”

Other companies, however, tried to capitalize on the snafu, including restaurant chain Denny’s: as would-be stream watchers repeatedly complained about receiving either “Access Denied” warnings or the aforementioned multi-colored broadcast message, the diner repurposed the latter error message and tweeted it with the

addition of new items like bacon, sausage and breakfast.

“It’s not the first time a hotly anticipated only event has been plagued by streaming problems,” John DuLing acknowledged on the Quartz.com tech website.

“It’s happened to ESPN and HBO fairly recently. And yes, while it may reflects the huge demand among for consumers for information about the company’s new products, it’s still a bit of an embarrassment.”

Indeed, Apple’s largely disastrous day was reflected to a degree on Wall Street, where stock in the company dropped drastically and then spiked upward during the duration of

the presentation before closing at nearly the same place as a day before by the end of trading on Tuesday — which is on par with the worst statistics seen by Apple in around three weeks’ time, according to The Wire.

On Forbes, contributor Brian Solomon remarked that Apple should have seen anything but bad numbers by the end of the day, especially after finally introducing its Watch product following years of anticipation.

“The long-rumored iWatch disappointed,” Solomon wrote. “Now named the ‘Apple Watch,’ the device looked like an extraordinary update on the standard watch — much more

iCantWatch: Apple Under Fire

By Desert Star Staff All eyes were on Apple’s big unveiling on Tuesday — or at least that was the plan — but computer issues kept many people around the globe from watching a live broadcast of the Silicon Valley giant’s highly anticipated product launch.

Apple fans wanting to watch Tuesday’s event as the new iPhone, a payment system and a high-tech wristwatch were debuted didn’t have all that easy of a time: social media users tweeted in protest when the livestream of the event provided for free on Apple’s website routinely lost signal or, for many people, didn’t load altogether.

Many of the would-be watchers attacked Apple for sharing a stream that was ripe with “hiccups,” as the Wall Street Journal put it mildly, but others were out of luck entirely if they wanted to watch the event on any browser not made by Apple: streaming the event required users to load the footage in only one web browser, Apple’s Safari, meaning most Windows and Android users were left scrambling for alternatives in order to catch the unveiling.

According to a report conducted

by W3Counter in late August, Safari is the browser of choice for only around 12.15 percent of web surfers — well behind Google’s Chrome, which carries a market share of around 25 percent — keeping more than just a couple

By KMIR News Staff PALM SPRINGS (CNS) - Thunderstorms capable of producing heavy rain and flash flooding are expected in the Coachella Valley and the mountains of Riverside County again today, forecasters said.

A National Weather Service flash flood watch will remain, in effect, through this evening in the mountains and deserts, as a deep monsoonal flow in the atmosphere will draw moisture from the subtropics north through Southern California.

The main threat for flooding

will be late this morning through early afternoon near mountain slopes and foothills, and across the deserts, NWS f o re c a s t e r s s a i d . T h e risk of flash flooding will be the greatest in steep canyons, downstream from mountain slopes and in recently burned areas where runoff and debris can quickly fill dry washes.

By Gloria Rodrìguez A rainstorm swept into the Coachella Valley this morning, swamping parts of the valley and leaving motorists stuck as roads were flooded.

The downpours began in earnest in the 7am hour and seemed to hit hardest in the Palm Springs and La Quinta/ Indio areas. Although much of the valley saw heavy rain.

The La Quinta Cove devolved into gridlock as most if not all roads in and out of the area were closed. Motorists abandoned their cars in the streets in The Cove, as well as on Washington Street and Avenue 52, both of which were under water.

A flash flood warning remains in effect for the valley until at least noon.

Forecasters said more than three inches of rain could fall in some areas, and flooding would be likely near slow-moving thunderstorms.

Flash flooding can develop miles from a thunderstorm and can lead to dangerous flows in normally dry creek beds, forecasters said. Rain and flash floods pummeled the Coachella Valley and other parts of Riverside County Sunday.

Driver in Double Fatal Crash Bails Out INDIO, Ca. - Arraignment has been postponed until October 30th for a man accused of driving drunk and causing a crash that killed two people in Palm Springs.

KMIR News has also learned Jonathan Eduardo Garcia-Avila, 21, of Cathedral City, posted $75,000 bond and bailed out of jail Thursday afternoon.

He was arrested Wednesday at a hospital where he was treated for injuries suffered in the crash that killed Osvaldo Ramirez, 21, of Cathedral City, and 18-year-old Tierra Reagins of Palm Springs. A third passenger, whose identity was withheld, suffered minor injuries, according

to Palm Springs police.

Garcia-Avila is charged with two counts of murder and one count of DUI gross vehicular manslaughter, with sentenceenhancing allegations of causing great bodily injury to multiple victims. Under the so-called Watson rule, based on California Supreme Court case People v.

Watson, a drunk driver who causes a fatal car crash can be charged with and convicted of second-degree murder because they’ve acted with a disregard for human life.

Garcia-Avila lost control of a 2005 Cadillac CTS while driving north on Gene Autry Trail around 3:15 a.m. Sunday, police said.

The car slammed into a traffic pole at the intersection of Gene Autry and Tachevah Drive, and the impact sheared the car in two, according to police.

One passenger was partially ejected and the other was flung from the car. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

Garcia-Avila was booked on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence of alcohol causing injury. He also had a warrant for an unrelated misdemeanor case involving sex with a minor that was filed in March, according to police and court records.

Carjacking Suspect Arrested; Car Recovered

PALM SPRINGS, Ca. - From Palm Springs Police Department: On Wednesday, September 3, 2014, at approximately 5:15 PM, the Palm Springs Police Department received a report of a past carjacking.

PSPD learned that the alleged carjacking had occurred on Tuesday, September 2, 2014, at approximately 11:00 AM, in the 2600 block of Chuperosa

Road. The victim reported that the suspect, who was an acquaintance of the victim, brandished a handgun and demanded the keys to the victim’s black 2004 Audi A4.

Out of fear for his safety, the victim handed the suspect his car keys. The suspect then took the vehicle and drove away. The victim waited over 24 hours to report the incident to PSPD.

On Thursday, September 4, 2014, at approximately 7:22 PM, PSPD recovered the stolen vehicle and arrested the suspect, Jody Noel, at a residence in the 1400 block of Luna Way. PSPD later served a search warrant at the location and recovered two loaded handguns. PSPD arrested Noel for the carjacking violation, several violations related to

illegal firearms possession, and two violations of committing a felony while out of custody on bail. PSPD also contacted an on call judge who authorized a bail increase to $250,000. Noel was transported to the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility in Banning.

This was Noel’s third arrest

by PSPD since August 12, 2014. Noel was out of custody

at the time of his most current arrest after posting $250,000 bail following an arrest on August 22, 2014, for a robbery.

PSPD had arrested Noel on August 12, 2014, near the Palm Springs Airport for possessing a concealed and loaded firearm, resisting officers in the performance of their duties, and for additional felony violations.

By Desert Star Staff Theatre 29 and Director Gary Daigneault have completed casting of local performers for the electrifying musical adaptation of Mel Brooks’ monstrously funny film that will leave you in stitches.

In “Young Frankenstein”, the grandson of the infamous Victor Frankenstein, Frederick Frankenstein (pronounced “Fronk-en-steen”) inherits his family’s estate in Transylvania.

With the help of a hunchbacked side-kick, Igor (pronounced “Eye-gore”), and a leggy lab assistant, Inga (pronounced normally), Frederick finds himself in the mad scientist shoes of his ancestors. “It’s alive!” he exclaims as he brings to life a creature to rival his grandfather’s. Eventually, of course, the monster escapes and hilarity continuously abounds.

Daigneault, Musical Director Bill Barrett and Choreographer Mandi Pushkar have assembled a very high talent level cast for the big Broadway Musical adaptation of the Mel Brooks classic film.

Cast as Dr. Frederick Frankenstein is Graham Cooley, his sidekick “Igor” is being played by Jericho McWilliams, and Curtis Mohn will portray the

monster. Filling other feature roles is Pamela Crane as Inga, Char Childs plays Elizabeth Benning, and Cindy Daigneault takes on the role of Frau Blucher (whinny!). In delightful support roles are Scott Clinkscales as the Blind Hermit/Inspector Kemp, Cyrus Short as Ziggy, and Barry Inscore as Dr. Victor Von Frankenstein.

Filling out the show in multiple parts as Villagers, Students, Family members, Dancers, and Featured Ensemble are Amanda Winters, Patti Brown, Chalise Kunz, Gabrielle Timbrook, Amanda Mohn, Anna Dean, and Cathy “Dude” Inscore.

Every bit as relevant to audience members who will remember the original as it will be to newcomers, “Young Frankenstein” has all the panache of the screen sensation with a little extra theatrical flair added. RIALTO, CA – The La Quinta High School football team got off on the wrong foot in the season-opening rematch with powerhouse Heritage but that all changed on the road last Friday with a 54-13 onslaught of the Eisenhower High School, spoiling the Eagles’ home opener.

The Blackhawks (1-1 Overall, 0-0 in DVL) brought home the victory in last year’s 24-21 barnburner against the Eagles (1-1 Overall, 0-0 in Citrus Belt) but La Quinta head coach Dan Armstrong crafted a whole new game plan in 2014. No more Vincent Guzman, yet a more experience aerial attack, headed by junior quarterback Micheal Avina proved more than enough for Armstrong’s team get the blowout.

Considering the Blackhawks’ reputation of having a run-first offense, Mike Clark’s Eagles piled the box in hopes of stopping La Quinta running back Chris Toribio from gaining yards all night.

Eisenhower’s plan did curb the run in the beginning of the game but Armstrong saw a hole in the Eagles secondary and made sure to take advantage.

Avina’s arm made an example out of the Eagles defense from the beginning of the game, tossing a 37-yard pass to Sam Gomez midway through the first quarter. After a three-yard Toribio run, the score was 14-0 at the end of the first quarter and La the lead would only continue to grow. Despite being scoreless, Eisenhower would have kept the game close going into halftime but a Benjamin Cordova interception started a domino affect of late first-half turnovers that put the game in unwinnable territory for the Eagles.

Post pickoff, with 2:25 left in the second quarter, Avina tossed a 63-yard bomb to Gaylen Swearingen for a touchdown to make it 24-0. The Eagles clumsily fumbled the ball on their next opportunity, squandering one of its oh-so-important waning possessions. On the first play following the fumble, Avina threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Justin Anderson to give the Blackhawks the 31-0 lead.

As if they had not made enough of a statement in the first 20 minutes, the Blackhawks defense forced a turnover on downs and was looking to score one more time before the end of the half. With 40 seconds left, La Quinta made it to the Eisenhower 23-yard line and punched in

field goal as the clock expired, increasing the lead to 34-0.

“The whole game they were playing man-to-man without a free safety and we have got some pretty fast guys, too,” Coach Armstrong said. “I think they have a lot of confidence in their speed, as they should, they are fast, but we have got some pretty good speed, too. We said all week long if they are going to play us without a free safety we are going to take some shots and it paid off.”

Clark’s Eagles recognized the run-stop defense was not working out as planned, so he decided to change things up in the second half. Loosening up the run coverage a little bit allowed Toribio to have more room to run, and run he did. After a relatively tame third quarter, Toribio found a hole and took the ball 66 yards to the end zone. With 1:39 left in the third, Avina launched one final touchdown pass to Makua Camarao extending the lead to 42.

With a score of 48-6 heading into the final quarter, Eisenhower would get one more touchdown in the beginning to make it to 13 points but the score could not even serve as a miniscule moral victory. Adding insult to injury, for the final scoring play of the game, Toribio took the kickoff 90 yards for the touchdown, clearly making a statement.

“We executed a lot better, we eliminated a lot of mistakes, last week I thought we played better on offense and we made a lot of mistakes but we played a better team,” Coach Armstrong said.

“Tonight we were able to play mistake free football, stay ahead of the chains and hit some early deep balls to soften them up so that really helped. “ The Blackhawks played next to flawless football. The defense was on point, and doing what good teams do, La Quinta took advantage of turnovers to put the game away early. Michael Avina – who is turning into quite the quarterback – finished with four touchdowns on 263 yards passing. Avina already has five touchdown passes in the first two games of 2014, which is amazing considering he only threw one all last year. Including his two touchdowns, Toribio finished with 90 rushing yards.

The Blackhawks return home this Friday to play the JW North Huskies (0-2 Overall, 0-0 Inland Valley) at 7 pm.
