“Latin History For Morons” John Leguizamo Gives A Jet-Propelled Performance in “Latin History For Morons” Lady Beverly Cohn Hoots, hollers, whistles, and wild applause greeted John Leguizamo as he entered the Ahmanson Theatre stage. The star of his one-man Latin history lesson quickly quieted down the audience, telling them there was a lot

of material to cover. Dressed in a conservative outfit, he quickly assumed a professorial demeanor, (but not for long) immediately launching into a 110-minute, non-stop, hilarious, head-spinning, and sometimes irreverent re-telling of the mostly invisible rich Latin legacy.

Suicide Prevention: A Simple Conversation Can Save a Life

Ohio’s suicide rate rose nearly 24% between 2008 and 2017. (JohnHain/ Pixabay)

By Desert Star Staff COLUMBUS, Ohio — A simple conversation could save a life - that’s just one of the messages mental-health organizations are hoping to drive home during National Suicide Prevention Week, which runs through Saturday. Ohio’s suicide rate rose nearly 24% between 2008 and 2017, and Austin Lucas, program director at the Ohio Suicide Prevention Foundation, explained social stigma still prevents people from seeking help. That’s why he said it’s crucial to discreetly reach out to loved ones who might be struggling and ask the question directly. “’Are you thinking about killing yourself? Are you thinking about suicide?’ And for a lot of people, that’s really scary, especially if they are really close to this person, because they’re anxious that

this person might say ‘yes,’” Lucas said. “However, having that conversation might be enough to save their life.” If the answer is “yes,” Lucas said the next step is to stay with them and help connect them to resources that can help. In 2015, roughly 3-in-4 Ohioans who took their lives were adult males. However, Lucas noted, people of all ages, races, genders and walks of life can be affected by suicide. Anyone in crisis is encouraged to text 4-HOPE to 741-741. Ohio has more than 50 suicide-prevention organizations available to assist folks in every county. Lucas said there also are roughly 20 LOSS teams, who provide support to suicide survivors. “It’s called ‘postvention,’ what happens after a suicide, caring for those folks that are left behind,” he explained.

“Because folks that have lost a loved one to suicide themselves are at a higher risk because of that experience.” For National Suicide Prevention Month in September, Lucas said the Ohio Suicide Prevention Foundation is sharing inspirational videos to help those who are struggling. “We have interviewed suicide-attempt survivors, people who have had suicidal ideation or thoughts, and also people who’ve lost loved ones to suicide and we hear their story,” Lucas said. “It’s just messages of hope, how they found hope and where they found hope.” Assistance also is available through the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. The number is 1-800-723-8255. This story was produced in association with Media in the Public Interest and funded in part by the George Gund Foundation.

this approach to learning. Here are five examples of how technology is supporting the integration of science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics in classrooms today. • Lessons brought to life: Virtual reality in the classroom has the power to immerse students in STEAM material more fully than ever before, while giving students with engineering proclivities the opportunity to create their own educational content. As the cost of this technology becomes more accessible, a growing number of schools are benefiting. • Visualized math: The ability to visualize mathematical concepts can support students’ grasp of the material. And expanded features on the latest models of graphing calculators give students the ability to easily draw three-dimensional graphs such as planes, cylinders and spheres, and view them from various angles in order to better analyze their shape. The expanded features and improved catalog function of the fx-CG50 PRIZM graphing calculator, for example, includes a cross-section option and special zoom function, enabling students to further examine graphs for deeper analysis. Offering a color LCD with a full textbook-style display, students can even plot graphs over pictures of real-life scenes. • Art lessons without the mess: New free and inexpensive educational apps give art teachers an opportunity to deliver lessons without the mess. From charcoal drawing to pottery to painting, the digital experience can faithfully replicate the real thing, so that young artists learn all the fine art principles needed

to create a masterpiece. • Accelerated music instruction: Research continues to support the vital role that music education plays in STEAM learning. And now, new tools are making it easy for educators to introduce students to a wide scope of tones, rhythms and genres, and offer students an opportunity to learn at a pace that keeps them motivated. For example, the Casio CT-X700 portable keyboard for advanced beginners to intermediate players features a Step-Up Lesson system that displays proper finger placement and notation, allowing users to easily learn songs. A USB-MIDI port connects to any Mac, PC, Android or iOS device so that the world of music is literally at the fingertips of students. • Better presentation: From sines and cosines to a map of the galaxy, no matter what subject is being taught, teachers know it isn’t always easy to maintain the class’s attention. But keeping students engaged is easier today, thanks to the latest generation of projectors, which offer sharper visuals and new educational solutions that help teachers maintain their momentum with modern, streamlined lessons. Those from the Superior Series from Casio LampFree Projectors allow teachers to select a presenter from anywhere in a classroom and project their device onto the screen, as well as control projection remotely using their own smart device anywhere in the classroom. Today’s students are not only deriving the benefits of an integrative STEAM approach to learning, they have some of the coolest new tools to support their education. How Exclusive is Exclusive Use Area? [Part 2]

By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Hi Kelly, I live in a condo complex in which the restricted common area is the front and back yards of each unit. The board says it has the authority to grant permission to an owner to make room additions in the backyard. I do not believe they have such authority as it would be “giving” ownership of the restricted common area which would then be enclosed in his unit. Do you believe the owner can build an addition to his unit? Thank you, P.W., San Diego

a significant disclosure problem for members, who surely will want to disclose the larger square footage even though they do not own that space. If such a modification to a home were to be allowed, a written agreement between the HOA and the homeowner is essential. Such agreement should, at a minimum, reflect that the homeowner is responsible for the new structure, the HOA has no responsibility to insure, repair or maintain it, and it still is common area. Another issue is whether the board violated Civil Code 4600, which requires a 2/3 vote of the membership before the HOA allows a homeowner to Dear P.W., convert “pure” common area First, the unit is not defined to exclusive use. Some may by what the board says, but by argue that the area already the condominium plan. That was exclusive use. Our HOA common area sprinkler timer control box is mounted at our master bedroom windows. If you stand looking into that box you are also looking into our entire master bedroom and bathroom. Entrance to this strip behind our home requires passing through two privacy gates, one into our side yard and then one into the strip behind our home. Twice the vendor has come though both gates and stood at the box without giving us “reasonable notice”. Those areas are “exclusive use” areas. It’s totally unreasonable to allow anyone to stand at someone’s master bedroom window without a good reason and notice. Do we have a legal right to demand “reasonable notice” prior to them coming into that area? D.S., El Dorado Hills Dear D.S., Many association CC&Rs have sections permitting the association to enter into a member’s property in order to maintain the common area. A sprinkler box is a basic item

for landscaping maintenance, and so would be a legitimate need for the HOA. The yard area you describe is apparently exclusive use common area, and so technically is not your property. Your privacy concern is a legitimate concern, and hopefully the board would consider that and ask the vendor to at least knock on your front door before they enter the yard. That is courtesy, and not necessarily a legal requirement. Another possibility might be for you to propose to share with the HOA the cost of relocating the box to an area more accessible for landscaping workers. Thanks and sincerely, Kelly Kelly G. How Small Steps Can Drive Big Results For Your Business

By Desert Star Staff In business, it’s the significant leaps that people notice and remember. Apple introduced the iPhone and the methods in which we communicate and gather information were changed forever. LEGO took some bold steps over the last couple of decades and expanded its toy franchise into video games, TV, and movies. Big steps. Big results. But not every move you make with your business or in

your personal life needs to be of earth-shattering significance, says Shawn Burcham (www. shawnburcham.com), founder and CEO of PFSbrands and author of Keeping Score with GRITT: Straight Talk Strategies for Success. Sometimes, it’s the small steps that eventually lead to big rewards. “One example with my own company is that there was a time when I didn’t believe in meetings,” Burcham says. “I thought they were a waste of time, probably because most of the meetings I had been in had indeed been a waste.” But as his business grew, Burcham realized meetings are a necessity for communicating within a large organization. So, PFSbrands took the “small step” of instituting regularly scheduled meetings, which he says have been critical to accomplishing personal, departmental,

and company-wide goals. Burcham offers a few more examples of small steps that can pay big dividends for you and your business: Make a habit of setting goals. “It may seem like a basic thing, but setting goals is crucial to success both personally and professionally,” Burcham says. “Everyone in your company should be setting goals, and regularly reviewing those goals and checking their progress.” Sounds easy enough, but this is one small step that many people don’t take. “That’s why just the act of setting goals already gives you a competitive advantage,” he says. Write down those goals. Setting goals is an excellent first step, but don’t just memorize them, Burcham says. Write them down because studies have shown that people who do that are more likely to achieve what

they are after than people without written goals. Build an accountability system. One of the best ways to make sure you follow through on your goals is to create a network of people who will hold you accountable, Burcham says. If no one knows you set a goal, it’s easy to let it slide. But if there are people who know about your goal, and better yet are depending on you to accomplish it, then you are more likely to follow through. In a business, it’s good for everyone to know everyone else’s goals and every department’s goals. That way, Burcham says, you can all hold each other accountable. Stop trying to do everything. Burcham suggests asking yourself what duties you can pass on to others because those activities are not a productive use of time and energy for you

Worried About Saving For College?

By Desert Star Staff As students head back to college, millions of parents are hoping their younger children someday can do the same. With the high costs of college continuing to rise, and many students and families saddled with massive debt, saving for college has become as important as ever. Many people started savings plans early, while others either could not afford to or procrastinated. The bottom line, says financial professional Alexander Joyce, is learning all the options that fit with a family’s financial situation. “It’s never too late, but most people wish they had started sooner, and many don’t know what investment option is best for their college funding needs,” says Joyce, president/ CEO of ReJoyce Financial LLC (www.ReJoyceFinancial. com) and author of ReJoyce In Your Retirement: Everything You Need To Know To Get Everything You Want. “Be honest and realistic about the college part of your family financials, and

from there, you can decide on ways to get there in discussions with a planner.” Joyce says the following points should be explored and evaluated before going forward with a college savings plan: Your risk tolerance level. Before committing to a college savings plan, it’s essential to determine how much you can afford to risk. “Just like anything in life, the higher the risk, the higher the potential reward,” Joyce says. “If you start very early you likely can go higher risk somewhere down the road. At the same time, risk tolerance — and protecting your principal — is critical because college savings is a usually more conservative investment; it’s a targeted investment, meaning you need an amount of money by a specific date.” The pros and cons of 529 plans. The 529 plan is an immensely popular college savings tool. Among the benefits are taxdeferred growth and tax-free withdrawals when savings are used for qualified education expenses. And as of 2019,

disadvantages, such as limited investment options and a 10 percent tax penalty applied when money in the account is used for non-qualified education expenses. “The 529 has traditionally been the way for many families because you hear about it the most,” Joyce says. “But if you’re getting a late start on college savings, this may not be the plan for you. You may have to play catch-up by contributing larger amounts, and you also have a shorter window for seeing your investments recover from market volatility.” Non-traditional college savings plans. “One of the individuals can contribute up to best things some people $15,000 per 529 plan, per child can do is look outside the annually without triggering a gift box of traditional planning vehicles,” Joyce says. “There’s tax. However, there are some

or for the company. “I’ve often made the mistake of hanging onto responsibilities far longer than necessary; everything from accounting to email management, to sales management,” he says. As a company grows, Burcham says, that small step of finding things you can stop doing will be crucial to success. “While each of these individually may be a small step, they are all important for personal growth and your business’ success,” Burcham says. “If you don’t set goals, write them down, and work to improve, you’ll likely be the exact same person 12 months from now. There’s nothing necessarily wrong with that. Being who you are is okay, but the question is: Are you content with being the same? Or do you want to be better?” Source: Shawn Burcham (www.shawnburcham.com)

a big argument for adding an additional level of equities — some say you would be better off buying a mutual fund or exchange-traded fund (ETF) to fund college. For example, with some funds averaging 10-15% in the market the last ten years, those who did exceptionally well took more market risk, exposing the principal to loss or gain. On the other hand, perhaps try a Roth IRA — it could double as a college savings account as well as a retirement account. There’s no 10 percent penalty when Roth IRA withdrawals are used for qualified higher education expenses, but ordinary income tax may apply to any earnings withdrawn before the age of 59½.” “When concluding a plan of action, stick to it the best you can,” Joyce says. “Consistency wins the race.” Source: Alexander Joyce

6 Keys to the Best Possible Stroke Recovery

By Desert Star Staff Strokes change more than 795,000 lives in the United States each year. In fact, according to the American Stroke Association, brain blockages or bleeds are one of the most common causes of disability and the fifth-leading cause of death. Starting the right rehabilitation program as soon as possible may help survivors recover better. One patient’s rehab journey might include balance, strength or mobility, while another might need speech or other therapies. “The residual impact of a stroke can vary widely between patients in terms of deficits and severity, said Pamela Duncan, Ph.D., F.A.H.A., American Stroke Association volunteer and professor of neurology at Wake Forest Baptist Health. “A rehabilitation program designed for you, where you need it, whether at a hospital or at home, is critical. For example, Jessica Alfonso was just 33 when she suffered a stroke. She credits her husband, Pablo, with saving her life – not just through the quick thinking that ensured her prompt medical

care, but for being her voice as she worked to regain her ability to speak, read, walk and eat independently. “He was with me for six weeks of inpatient rehabilitation,â€? Alfonso said. “Encouraging me and helping me communicate with my team while I re-learned everything. Without him, I may not have survived my stroke and I definitely wouldn’t be where I am today.â€? The American Stroke Association’s Together to End Stroke™ initiative, nationally sponsored by Kindred Hospital Rehabilitation Services, provides recovery tips and resources for stroke survivors and their caregivers such as: • Ask your doctor for an assessment of physical and cognitive challenges you face after a stroke and a specific plan to address each challenge. • Work with your doctor to create a plan to manage risk factors to prevent another stroke. This may include being physically active, not smoking and managing your blood pressure. • While recovery can occur years after a stroke, the most rapid recovery

typically occurs during the first three months. As soon as your medical team gives the “all clear,â€? start your personalized rehabilitation program right away. • It is recommended by American Heart Association guidelines that patients who can tolerate and are eligible for rehab at an inpatient rehabilitation facility receive it. However, rehabilitation can happen anywhere from a formal rehabilitation facility to the comfort of your home.

Ask your medical team for recommendations on the best local rehab options to maximize recovery. • Talk with your health care provider about any financial constraints, such as ability to pay for medications, so a plan can be developed to identify alternative community resources. • Communicate and follow up regularly with a team of health care providers as some challenges – such as remembering medications –

may not be immediately clear. “For many survivors, your functional state prior to the stroke plays a big role in how you recover, Duncan said. “Working with your team of loved ones and health care providers to find and stick with the best rehabilitation program for you is key. For more information about recovery and how to make informed decisions after a stroke, visit stroke.org/ recovery. AARP Kicks Off Voter Engagement Program for Nov. Elections

By Desert Star Staff RICHMOND, Va. – Virginia is just two months away from electing a new General Assembly, and this week AARP Virginia is launching a voter engagement program to help candidates and people age 50 and older focus on key issues during election season. This is the first day of the program’s initial event, a twoweek push advocating for family caregivers in the state. Natalie Snider, associate state director of advocacy for AARP Virginia, says her group is urging candidates to reconsider a Family Caregiver Tax Credit that was proposed, but not passed during the 2019 General Assembly. “This would advocate for up to a $1,000 income tax credit each year,” she points out. “So it would be for qualifying taxpayers. Individuals earning $75,000 a year or less would be able to claim that tax credit for

50% of their out-of-pocket expenses up to that $1,000.” Snider says more than 1 million Virginians provide unpaid, daily living care for a loved one at a cost of $7,000 each year out of pocket. Snider admits that the tax credit does not cover all of most caregivers’ expenses, but says it’s a step in the right direction. AARP Virginia also surveyed caregiver voters in the state age 45 and older to address their financial and personal needs. Snider says that report will be released in midSeptember to communicate to candidates and the public what caregivers are really facing. “Family caregiving is getting more expensive,” she stresses. “It’s getting more difficult. Long-term services and supports are more expensive, insurance isn’t covering as many things, people are released from hospitals sooner.

AARP Virginia’s voter education program is encouraging its 1 million members to reach out to candidates via Twitter during the General Assembly election season this fall. (Adobe stock) “So caregivers take on tasks that they would not previously have been asked to do.” Over the next two months, AARP Virginia’s voter engagement campaign also will educate the public

and candidates about issues surrounding saving for retirement, prescription drug affordability and student debt. Snider says voters 50 and older need to know where their candidates stand on important issues

to make their own informed choices on Election Day. Disclosure: AARP Virginia contributes to our fund for reporting on Budget Policy & Priorities, Health Issues, Hunger/Food/ Nutrition, Senior Issues.

CDC raises the alarm after mystery vaping-linked lung disease kills 5

By Desert Star Staff US health officials are urging Americans to stop vaping while they investigate at least five deaths and over 450 cases of a severe lung illness which has cropped up in otherwise “healthy young people” who

vape in over 33 states. Hundreds of previouslyhealthy young people have been stricken with a rare, deadly and possibly-incurable lung disease called lipoid pneumonia since the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention began a multi-state

probe into the mysterious epidemic, apparently linked to vaping, in August, according to a report released on Friday. Victims of the disease, usually caused by inhaling oil, suffer bouts of coughing, shortness of breath, vomiting, nausea and chest pain, often requiring

hospitalization and oxygen. Five deaths from the mysterious illness have been reported so far, three of them on Friday. In addition to deaths confirmed by the CDC in Illinois and Oregon, Indiana, Minnesota, and Los Angeles health officials announced additional deaths on Friday. The CDC is still investigating another case. Aside from their use of e-cigarettes, the disease’s victims have little in common, sprinkled across 33 states and one US territory. Some vaped nicotine exclusively while others used THC, the active chemical in marijuana – but all vaped within the last 90 days, and the CDC is urging anyone who uses e-cigarettes to stop immediately until they can get to the bottom of this crisis. “We’re all wondering if this is new or just newly recognized,” the CDC’s

Asylum Seekers’ Hunger Strike Reaches 60th Day By Desert Star Staff EL PASO, Texas – Today marks Day 60 of a hunger strike by three political refugees from India, detained for more than a year in an El Paso Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility. The policy of indefinite detention began under the Obama administration, and has continued under President Donald Trump. Previously, most asylum seekers were released. Margaret Brown Vega, volunteer coordinator with the group “Advocate Visitors with Immigrants in Detention,” says

the strikers all passed a test showing they have credible fear of violence if they return home. “All of these guys have sponsors,” says Vega. “They don’t have any kind of criminal history, so they pose no public threat. On that basis they should be released, to be able to pursue their asylum claim outside of detention.” The hunger strike was called to draw attention to poor conditions at the El Paso Service Processing Center, Vega says, and because of a deep desire to be free, one way or another.

A report in The Guardian revealed that three strikers were recently force-fed by ICE through plastic naso-gastric tubes, a practice opposed by the American Medical Association and seen as torture by United Nations officials. ICE representatives maintain that forcefeeding is necessary to keep the men alive, and is required by regulation. The force-feedings have been challenged in federal court, and a judge is now considering whether ICE has institutional alternatives. September 11, 2019

Vega doesn’t believe the procedure is necessary to keep the men alive. “These men will stop their hunger strike immediately if they’re released,” says Vega. “That option is available to ICE – but instead, every request for

Dr. Dana Meaney-Delman told reporters on Friday. Doctors are still trying to figure out how to treat the condition – while patients were started on antibiotics in most cases, and some later treated with steroids, it’s not clear that these treatments helped the patients. Over 120 samples have been analyzed, and while a few possible chemical culprits have been suggested – vitamin E acetate, present in many of the THC-containing products, was briefly highlighted – no one substance has been identified in all of them, according to Food and Drug Administration director Mitch Zeller. E-cigarettes were ironically popularized as ‘healthy’ alternatives to smoking tobacco, but have become an “epidemic” unto themselves among youth, according to the CDC. release for all of these men has been routinely denied by ICE.” ICE also force-fed at least six men from India this past December and January, according to The Guardian report. Nearly 1,400 people who are longterm detainees have gone on hunger strike since 2015, in 18 different facilities.

Newspapers are vital to democracy.

Afghan peace talks dead

Don’t let the Legislature kill them off. California newspapers have weathered the arrival of the internet era by continuing to play our crucial role of holding the powerful accountable. Now a bill before the state Legislature that would have a devastating financial impact on newspapers is nearing passage – without lawmakers grasping the harm it would do. Here’s what the editorial pages of some California newspapers have to say about it:

If you believe newspapers play an essential role in strengthening democracy and holding powerful leaders accountable, now is the time to speak up about Assembly Bill 5. The bill, as currently written, could force many California newspapers out of business. It’s unlikely that Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez, D-San Diego, sought to create an existential threat to California’s free press when she authored

Our industry has been struggling, but we are making strides to ensure our future and don’t need setbacks that only make it harder. All we ask is that state lawmakers do us no harm — that, to help ensure the survival of local journalism, they let us continue operating under the same rules that have governed us for

If you’re reading this while holding a newspaper in your hands, it means you are most likely a subscriber, and your delivery person did their job today. Today, we’re asking for your help to keep that alive. As written, Assembly Bill 5 … would have a devastating economic impact on countless California residents and businesses. It would be especially harmful for many (if not

AB 5. But in what seems like an unintended consequence of the bill, AB 5 would basically make daily delivery of the print version of the newspaper nearly impossible. … That’s because the bill would require newspapers to treat newspaper carriers as employees rather than independent contractors. This would disrupt and destabilize the newspaper industry at a time when accurate, credible news is most needed – and most threatened.

more than 40 years. … The carrier system has worked for decades delivering [the] morning paper. It makes little sense to undermine it now. And it would make even less sense to undermine it when lawmakers have the option to leave the status quo with regards to carriers in place.

By Desert Star Staff US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has said that peace negotiations with Afghanistan’s Taliban are dead and that Washington will not enter any future agreement without “commitments” from the militants. Appearing on a round of cable news shows Sunday morning, Pompeo told one of these, Fox News, that negotiations with the Taliban are dead “for the time being,” adding that Washington is recalling its special envoy to Afghanistan to work out its next steps. Also appearing on CNN, Pompeo said that the US would not enter into any future agreement with the Taliban without “significant commitments” from the fighters, who now control more Afghan territory than at any point since the US invasion in 2001. Pompeo’s statements come one day after President Donald Trump canceled meetings with Taliban officials at Camp David. Trump scrapped the talks –which

were planned in secret– after Taliban-claimed attacks in Kabul killed 12 people, including one American soldier, earlier in the week. “If they cannot agree to a ceasefire during these very important peace talks, and would even kill 12 innocent people, then they probably don’t have the power to negotiate a meaningful agreement anyway,” Trump tweeted on Saturday. With diplomacy scuppered, Pompeo told CNN that “if the Taliban don’t behave...we’re not going to reduce our support for the Afghan security forces that have fought so hard there in Afghanistan,” a hint that the US may remain involved in Afghan affairs for some time yet. President Trump dropped a similar hint on Saturday night, asking “how many more decades are they willing to fight?” Prior to the canceled meeting, US officials seemed hopeful that an end to the 18year conflict in Afghanistan

was near. US envoy Zalmay Khalilzad presented a draft US-Taliban agreement to Afghan President Ashraf Ghani at the beginning of the month, which outlined plans for a US withdrawal from the country in exchange for a Taliban pledge not to plan attacks abroad from within Afghanistan. Trump’s revelation that the talks had fallen apart drew a wave of political and media criticism for even hosting them in the first place. Democrat and Republican lawmakers alike argued that members of the Taliban should “never” be allowed onto US soil. CNN’s Jake Tapper asked Pompeo on Sunday whether he would support a similar move from a Democrat president, especially one taking place days before the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. “We have an obligation to do everything we can,” Pompeo responded, and told Tapper that he has always been “fully supportive” of Trump’s efforts to sit down with the Taliban.

most) of our state’s newspapers, especially in smaller communities that rely so heavily on local journalism for their news. … We all know independent contract workers and we don’t disagree that many are deserving of employee status. But this bill goes too far, taking that decision out of the hands of thousands of contractors who enjoy the freedom offered by non-employee status.

The California News Publishers Association is deeply concerned that the Legislature will adjourn without helping newspapers and carriers and the communities they serve. That would be a major blow to an industry already facing declining revenues. The failure of the Legislature to act would be a tipping point in the history of California newspapers and the public’s right to know. If Assembly Bill 5 is passed by the Legislature without an exemption for newspaper carriers, California newspapers will face an expensive new obstacle to their survival. If you want to help newspapers continue to perform their crucial watchdog role, please call your state senator and urge him or her to make sure that an exemption for newspaper carriers is included in AB 5 before it comes up for a vote on the Senate floor.

elevated PFAS levels in 11 wells, and detected the chemicals in 26 others. Jeff Lamont, a retired hydrologist, said the compounds have been found in his well. He said they break down slowly in the environment, stay in your body for the rest of your life, and have been linked to serious medical problems. “Testicular cancer, high cholesterol, pregnancy problems in women, hypertension,” Lamont said. Tyco has proposed expanding the City of Marinette’s water system to include more homes that now use well water. Sen. Tammy Baldwin, D-Wis., hosted a closed-door meeting for people living near the Tyco plant last week. She wants the Environmental Protection Agency to take leadership for determining a national standard for safe drinking water. The agency has provided support for 10

states facing PFAS cleanup problems, but Wisconsin isn’t one of them. An underground plume of contamination from a firefighting training facility in Marinette is said to be spreading. And it could reach Green Bay, only a mile away. Lamont said he worries Tyco could take shortcuts in investigating the extent of the problem. He added similar health threats have been found in other states. “It’s not just in this state and in my hometown. This is across the country, and in multiple DOD facilities,” he said. “This is a compound used by fire departments when it’s not needed to be used.” Lamont is one of the leaders of a group of residents tracking Tyco’s response. The current EPA health advisory level is 70 partsper-trillion in drinking water. Lamont’s well water tested at 21 parts-per-trillion, but he said neighbors’ wells less than 300 yards away had test results of 88 and 120.

the Aztecs, which was melted down and used for coins by the King of Spain. He references his quest for knowledge as an “intellectual Jihad.” With a large blackboard equipped with an eraser, which also doubled as a costume enhancer, he began to scrawl historic notes depicting the rise and fall of great Latin empires beginning with the Aztecs, who the history books say were invaded and ultimately conquered by Hernán Cortés in 1521, claiming Mexico for Spain. John added that most of the natives died from diseases brought to them by the European conquerors, including syphilis, which he deliberately misspelled, daring anyone in the audience to spell it correctly. He used the analogy that “If your wallet is in your back pocket, and I take it, now it’s mine.” Despite being bullied, his son is anti-violence and quoted Gandhi to which his father replied, “Gandhi couldn’t think straight because he was always hungry.” His son cited an incorrect piece of history to which dad quipped, “Oh, my son is learning history from Mel Gibson.” Under the tight direction of Tony Taccone, what is so compelling about Leguizamo’s work is his ability to morph into a variety of characters including his soft-spoken son, the school bully’s father, a pompous New England type white guy with an affected accent, his son’s teacher, his shrink, who

points out that he might have unexpressed “ghetto rage” emanating from his childhood, his soft-spoken Jewish wife, and Sigmund Freud, for whom he quickly applied a tiny beard. His transitions from the different characters back to himself were mercurial and seamless. With a heavy dose of unending laugh lines, which kept the action moving swiftly, he describes the conquistadors conquering the Aztecs, which included raping and pillaging, as being like “N.B.A. players at a Kardashian pool party.” With no end to his incredible talent and imagination, much to the audience’s delight, Leguizamo’s demonstrated, in rapid transition, a sampling of Latin dances including samba, mambo, tango, and an Irish Jig, all thought to have evolved from ancient Aztec and Inca rituals. Soon there was very little black peeking through on the blackboard as this theatrical dynamo scribbled note after note, some with comical or sexual illustrations, with an occasional jab at the current state of American politics, which went over really well with this enthusiastic audience. I wondered how any Trump supporter in the audience if there was one, would react, but never a boo was uttered. Ah. But I digress. Soon we learn that there were Latin patriots who fought in the Civil War and, in fact, fought in every American war, illustrating how whitewashed history books are. In illustrating historic events, John Leguizamo chalks diagrams, most of which are comical with sexual overtones. Photo: Matthew Murphy Loreta Janeta Velázquez disguised herself as a man and became “Lieutenant Harry T. Buford,”a Confederate soldier. Leguizamo’s lessons were not without current reference as to what’s happening to Latinos today who, under this administration, are being as oppressed as they were historical, with the added horror of children being ripped out of their mothers’ arms and put in cages. He also referenced what was done to the American Indians, citing the tragic Cherokee “Trail of Tears.”* At one very serious point, seated in a chair with a spotlight shining only on him, he rattled off statistics on how many Latinos served not only in the Civil War but in all American wars, including accomplishments from every sector of society including politics, distinctly saying “Not Ted Cruz.” Some of the inventions which came out of Mexico include, color television, ballpoint pen, artificial heart, the electric brake, contraceptive pill, and from Perú, the neonatal artificial bubble. Leguizamo’s “Latin History For Morons” is a brilliantly conceived piece of writing, wonderfully executed by this gifted actor who gives a tour-de-force performance. While you will laugh your way through the evening (or afternoon) underneath it all is the hidden subtext of just what the “white” world has visited upon not only the Latin population but the Jewish population as well. I wish this most entertaining production could also serve as a cautionary “tale” of just what dangers we are facing in our country that are manifesting in both a symbolic and actual “ethnic cleansing.” That said, if you need nonstop laughter to get you out of the national doldrums, this play is a perfect prescription to accomplish just that.

aintaining a healthy home is a goal most Americans share, but not all are confident they’re doing the best job they can to protect their home’s health. According to a survey conducted by Second Nature, the nation’s largest home wellness subscription service, 62% of respondents admitted they could do a better job of attaining a healthy home, with clean air ranked as the most critical factor in achieving home wellness. Gain more confidence in the health and cleanliness of your home with these tips: n

Remove your shoes when you enter the house. Add entryway seating to encourage guests to take off their shoes. The bottom of a pair of shoes can contain anything from fecal matter to E. coli and pesticides. Leaving shoes at an entryway is one of the easiest ways to combat home pollution and promote a healthy home. Replace air filters regularly. The air filter in your home dictates the air you breathe and ensures that it is healthy enough for ingestion. More often than not, air filters are not top of mind when thinking about home wellness, but they are crucial to every home. That’s why it’s important to replace air filters on schedule – every three months as recommended by the National Institutes of Health. If you’re like many homeowners who struggle to remember when it’s time to change your filter, or never have a filter handy when you do remember, you may benefit from a service like Second Nature, which provides a home delivery subscription that ensures your air filters are replaced on time. The company’s high-quality air filters help reduce the risk of contracting allergies, sickness and infection while also ultimately lowering costs associated with energy bills, repairs and health-related expenses. Change out your light bulbs. Choose the right color temperature for a calmer home and use energy-efficient bulbs. The selection for light bulbs is massive, and with smart home technologies that allow you to change the color of your bulb with the swipe of a finger, you can also easily control your mood. Warm lighting typically has an overall positive effect on everyone in the home. One of the keys to home wellness is ensuring you are truly happy in your home, and lighting can play a pivotal role in cultivating this emotion.

Open windows on good weather days. Most Americans (61%) believe the air inside their homes is cleaner than it is outside, according to the survey. However, the Environmental Protection Agency estimates indoor air is 2-5 times more polluted than the air outside. This is in part because Americans tend to enclose themselves indoors, where the same air is recycled over an extended time. The smell of the meal you cooked for dinner, the trash in the garbage can and the candle you light on your nightstand all have an impact on the air quality in your home. Opening windows allows for polluted air to release itself from the home and, in turn, allows for cleaner air to circulate the space. Filter your water. Water is essential to any healthy lifestyle, and drinking clean water is a luxury that is often overlooked. However, what is also overlooked is how many chemicals and toxins that can affect your health are in the tap water you drink on a daily basis. Filtering your water is one simple step that can benefit not only your own health, but the health of everyone in the home.

Rafael Nadal edges 5-set thriller against Daniil Medvedev By Desert Star Staff Spanish tennis superstar Rafael Nadal and Russian ace Daniil Medvedev served up a final to remember at the US Open, as the world No.2 edged a thrilling contest 7-5, 6-3, 5-7, 4-6, 6-4 at Flushing Meadows. In a match already being described as one of the greatest US Open finals of all time, Nadal raced into a twoset lead, only for Medvedev to come storming back into the match to take the contest into a deciding fifth set. Eventually, it was Nadal’s big-game experience and nerveless composure in the deciding set that proved vital as he edged out his younger opponent and secured victory after almost five hours of play at the Arthur Ashe Stadium. In a first set that saw both men take control of their service games and Nadal handed a code violation after the first game for slow play, the two players slugged it out, with Medvedev earning the first service break of the match in the third game. But Nadal immediately responded to break back in Game 4 to put things back on serve once again. The pair then battled it out all the way to the 12th game before Nadal eventually claimed the crucial second service break to take the set 7-5. Medvedev looked to fire straight back at the start of the second set, but Nadal battled back to save set points and secure his first service game. Then the Spanish ace put the pedal to the metal and upped the pressure on Medvedev’s serve, breaking the Russian in the sixth game of the set before serving out the rest of the set to take a two-set lead. Nadal kept the pressure on in the third set and outgunned Medvedev from the baseline in the fifth game of the set to break serve and put him in pole position to claim victory, only for Medvedev to battle back in the very next game to level things up once again. And when the Russian produced a stubborn rearguard action to first save a break point, then brilliantly hold serve in Game 9, the crowd inside the Arthur Ashe Stadium rose as one to hail Medvedev’s gutsy refusal to give up. The momentum looked like it was swinging in Medvedev’s favor, and when he broke a tiring Nadal in the 11th game of the set, it gave him the opportunity to serve out the set and get a foothold in the match. And Medvedev turned that momentum into a bona-fide comeback as he produced some inspired tennis to break Nadal in the 10th game to win the fourth set 6-4 and take the match into a deciding set as the New York crowd exploded with joy.

Medvedev’s inspired returns of serve forced Nadal onto the back foot as the Spaniard produced some of his best defensive tennis to hold serve as the firedup 33-year-old roared his approval after holding his first service game of the set. Then, after an epic fifth game in the set, Nadal made the decisive breakthrough as he came storming back from 40-0 down to break Medvedev’s serve and put himself within touching distance of the title. The three-time champion then produced an imperious service game before pressuring Medvedev into a pair of crucial errors as Nadal broke again with some sublime shotmaking. It left the Mallorca native with the opportunity to serve for the match but in an unexpected twist, a time violation and

a long second serve saw Nadal blow his chance as Medvedev broke back instantly to keep his hopes alive. But Nadal recovered instantly and came storming

back on Medvedev’s serve. Some brave play from Medvedev saved two match points and held serve to put the onus back on Nadal again. But while he fell short in

MUSIC

BY ROBERT KINSLER

Celebrate New Sounds Via Trio of Terrific Albums

A number of musical styles are showcased on several top-tier recent releases. Artist: Lindsey Stirling Title: Artemis (BMG) You might like if you enjoy: Lindsey Stirling, CHVRCHES, Evanescence Tell me more: Lindsey Stirling’s continuing search to elevate the sonic world with her original compositions and incredible skills on the violin are celebrated on her latest album “Artemis.” The music on Stirling’s fifth full-length album is both accessible and daring with the artist proving yet again how she can find

success outside of commercial trends and the increasingly low bar exhibited by the majority of today’s hitmakers. A bona fide concept album, “Artemis” was inspired by Artemis, who in Ancient Greek mythology, was the daughter of Zeus and serves as the goddess of the moon. Distant female voices enlighten the title track “Artemis,” while Stirling’s shining violin work offers expert counterpoint. The electronica “Foreverglow,” dynamic symphonic rock-yearning “Love Goes On and On” (the latter featuring Evanescence lead vocalist Amy Lee) and buoyant electronica strike “The Upside”

(featuring singer Elle King) are other standouts on the disc. My favorite selection on “Artemis” is “Between Twilight,” which has an otherworldly beauty that would have been at home alongside composer Howard Shore’s “Lord of the Rings” trilogy. Information: LindseyStirling.com. Artist: Bobby Rush Title: Sitting on Top of the Blues (Deep Rush Records / Thirty Tigers) You might like if you enjoy: Buddy Guy, Sonny Boy Williamson Tell me more: Bluesman Bobby Rush’s aptly-pegged

“Sitting on Top of the Blues” is filled with infectious tracks that recall the past while propelling the American genre into the future. Launching things with the explosive “Hey Hey Bobby Rush,” stylish lead guitar, a driving rhythm and R&B-flavored horns help bolster the winning track. A dance between blues harp and lead guitar introduces “Good Stuff” before Rush uses his powerful baritone to enthrall listeners the rest of the way. The songs on the disc powerfully fuse blues, soul, funk, and R&B in artful perfection. Other highlights on the Grammy Award winning artist’s disc include the joyful “You Got the Goods on You,” the nimble blues harp-anchored instrumental “Bobby Rush Shuffle,” the acoustic Deltadrenched “Recipe for Love” and funked out “Shake Til’ You Get Enough.” Information: BobbyRushBluesman.com. Artist: The Lilacs Title: The Lilacs

Endure (Pravda) You might like if you enjoy: Matthew Sweet, Big Star, Material Issue Tell me more: Chicagospawned power pop heroes The Lilacs are back with a terrific EP that celebrates the band’s knack for unleashing high-octane melodic rock. The band’s loose approach triggers a favorable comparison with the Rolling Stones’ freewheeling approach albeit with an emphasis on melodic rock; The Lilacs may be ragged around the edges but that’s clearly a good thing. Credit to producer Richard Lloyd (Television, Matthew Sweet) and the lineup featuring Ken Kurson (guitar, vocals), David Levinsky (guitar, vocals), John Valley (drums), Steve Poulton (bass) and Jimmy Matt Rowland (Hammond organ, piano, synthesizer). Any of the songs on this disc will please fans of the genre to be sure. Information: www. facebook.com/TheLilacs1990/.

Racketeering lawsuit heats up wine vs. weed war in Oregon

By Desert Star Staff The rolling hills of northern Oregon produce some of the most prized wine in America. But there’s rivalry from a new neighbor: Cannabis farms. With grapes and buds competing for the same soil, messy legal battles have ensued. Several racketeering lawsuits taken by winemakers against pot growers have languished and failed in Oregon’s courts, with the grape-growers unable to prove that the pot plantations next door messed with their crops or cost them business. One such lawsuit, however, has managed to proceed, with a federal judge acknowledging an actual financial loss. The owners of Momtazi Vineyard, in Oregon’s verdant Yamhill County, pride themselves on utilizing the earth beneath them to produce a superior product. “The farm is considered a living organism,” they write, and the Momtazi team avoids commercial fertilizers and pesticides, going as far as applying herbal teas “in homeopathic amounts” to their vines. Neighbors Mary and Steven Wagner use this same soil to grow marijuana with their company Yamhill Naturals, an activity legal in Oregon since 2014. The winery isn’t happy with its green-fingered neighbors, and a lawsuit filed against the Wagners earlier this year www.desertstarweekly.com

alleges that their pot farm has harmed Momtazi’s business. The suit, which was upheld by a federal judge late last month, states that a repeat customer had canceled a six-ton order of grapes, concerned that they had become tainted with the “notoriously pungent stench” of dope from next door. “A vineyard’s real property value is heavily dependent upon the marketability of the grapes grown on that vineyard property … and the marketability of the grapes grown [on] Momtazi property has declined,” the lawsuit read. The lawsuit was filed under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organization Act, or RICO, a federal act most notably used against drug cartels and mafia organizations. Though Oregonians are free to grow pot under that state’s laws, marijuana cultivation is still illegal under federal law. Hence, the judge allowed the case to proceed. The squabble in Yamhill County is just one of a series of flashpoints that have emerged since US states began legalizing marijuana, as established businesses seek to stop the advance of the green giant. Legal pot needs to grow somewhere, but business owners and residents near plantations argue that its presence brings down their property values. Half a dozen similar lawsuits have been filed in

Oregon alone, though none of them have made it as far through the courts as Momtazi’s latest effort. Last year a homeowner took legal action against a pot processing plant that had moved in next door, suing the operation and more than 200 businesses that it worked with, again justifying the use of RICO legislation due to marijuana’s illegality under federal law. The same strategy has been used to fight back in potfriendly states like Colorado, Massachusetts, and California, amid a broader pushback against pot growers. At a seminar for legal professionals last year, an anti-dope lawyer encouraged his audience not to turn their noses up at suing even small, “mom and pop” grow operations, as “their lawyers, their accountants, their September 11, 2019

financial advisers,” had “deep pockets” for lucrative payouts. Back in Yamhill County, the beef between the Momtazis and the Wagners began long before the current lawsuit was filed. The Wagners told the New York Times in 2017 that their arrival in wine country was met with resistance from their neighbors. “This is hostile territory,” the Wagners’ son Richard told the Times. “Everyone hates us.” The hate seemed to go both ways, though. After some national media coverage, the Momtazis reported getting threatening phone messages. At one point, winery owner Moe Momtazi found that someone had severed the tail of one of his cows, an act he saw as a direct threat from his neighbor’s supporters. With the legal case still

to be settled, the broader battle between Pinot Grigio and Pineapple Kush is also the talk of the wine industry. Wine connoisseurs swear on Oregonian Pinot Noir, but consumers are increasingly making the switch to cannabis as their intoxicant of choice. At this year’s Wine & Weed Symposium in California this month, market analyst Jessica Lukas stated that, by 2024, legal pot will be a $40 billion industry worldwide, with the US accounting for 70 percent of that value. More and more adults are consuming cannabis in legal states, and these new tokers are reducing their alcohol intake. While she said that cannabis is “not yet” affecting wine sales, an industry publication wrote that next year’s symposium “may tell a different story.”

Majority of Hoosiers Believe Climate Change is Real

By Desert Star Staff INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana’s status as a Republican stronghold might suggest that its residents also follow the party’s resistance to fighting climate change. But a new poll reveals that isn’t necessarily the case. In the survey, conducted by Matthew Houser – assistant research scientist and faculty fellow at the Environmental Resilience Center – along with other researchers at Indiana University, about 80% of respondents said they believe climate change is occurring, either “somewhat” or “to a great extent.” Houser says he found the views somewhat surprising. “We live in a state that we tend to think that opinion might not be so widespread,” says Houser. “And while we didn’t ask specifically about

the causes of climate change, the fact that people believe that it’s actually happening is a big step in the right direction.” In the survey, 77% of respondents felt climate change will harm Indiana’s economy, 72% said they feel climate change is already hurting the country, or “would in the next decade,” and 75% support policies to address climate impacts in Indiana. Houser says they also found the political divide in Indiana on this topic isn’t as significant as they expected. Some 66% of Republicans say they believe climate change is real, compared to 91% of Democrats. He adds those views also are evolving over time. “Fifty-two percent of Republicans believe climate change is happening ‘more so than they did five years

In a new poll, 75% of Indiana residents said they support policies to address the effects of climate change in the state. (Dominique Uhe/Adobe Stock) ago,’” says Houser. “And for Democrats, it’s about 75. So, while there certainly is the right/left divide in views, we’re still in the majority

Massive Ohio Voter Purge Today

By Desert Star Staff COLUMBUS, Ohio – After scoring a victory in court, the Ohio Secretary of State’s Office is expected to follow through on a massive voter registration purge today. The purge is happening despite discovering mistakes on the list, released by Secretary of State Frank LaRose, of roughly 235,000 voters at risk of losing their registrations. Jen Miller, executive director of the League of

Women Voters of Ohio, says the list erroneously includes names of some voters who are actually eligible to vote. “Thousands of individuals on the list had voted as recently as 2018, and by no means should be removed,” says Miller. “Others may not have gotten proper notification because of discrepancies between counties’ lists and Secretary of State LaRose’s voter look-up website.” This week, a U.S. District Court judge denied a request

to temporarily halt the removal process, noting that LaRose has been transparent in releasing the registration list and restored registrants who were eligible. Nearly 12,000 people on the list updated their registration information and won’t be removed. Miller says voting-rights groups appreciate the Secretary of State’s efforts to ensure a quality review of the rolls, but contend it wasn’t as in-depth as what they’d prefer. “At the end of the day the

across all of them.” The survey also asked about perceptions of others’ beliefs. Respondents on average underestimated

by 24% the number of Hoosiers who accept climate change as real – with supporters perceiving a higher percentage than doubters.

buck stops with the secretary [of state],” says Miller. “Both in federal law and state law, it is the secretary’s job to make sure that voter rolls are accurate – and that includes making sure that people are not wrongfully removed through this purge policy.” Miller encourages all Ohio voters to check their status on the Secretary of State’s website, to ensure they don’t have problems before the Oct. 7 deadline to register. “And if it says you’re ‘active,’ that means your registration is good to go,” says Miller. “If it says ‘confirmation,’ you should absolutely re-register. If your

name isn’t there at all, you definitely need to register. You have 30 days to do so.” If an Ohio voter is inactive for a two years, a notification is sent of their pending registration cancellation. If they fail to respond and don’t vote for four years, they can be removed from the rolls. The U.S. Supreme Court upheld the system last year, despite arguments that it may violate the National Voting Rights Act. This story was produced in association with Media in the Public Interest, and funded in part by the George Gund Foundation.

Wikipedia says massive hack attack took down the website By Desert Star Staff Foul play was behind a lasting outage that left millions of users in large parts of Europe and the Middle East without access to Wikipedia, the website has said, pinning the blame on “bad faith actors. The cyberattack hit

Wikipedia on Friday and continued well into Saturday, going offline in the UK, Poland, the Netherlands, France, Germany, and Italy. Several user reports on the Down Detector website indicate that some Middle Eastern countries were affected as well,

according to TechCrunch. Later on Saturday, a spokesperson for Wikimedia Foundation, the charitable organization behind Wikipedia, said the website was down due to a “malicious attack by unidentified “bad faith actors. Although the statement

was light on details and didn’t mention a specific perpetrator, the website’s Twitter account in Germany said it was a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack that brought the online encyclopedia down. A DDoS attack occurs when hackers overwhelm a

server or network with more traffic than it can handle, causing it to crash. “We condemn these sorts of attacks, Wikimedia said, adding that attempts to take it offline “threaten everyone’s fundamental rights to freely access and share information.

By Desert Star Staff President Donald Trump has greeted his latest Republican primary challenger, Mark Sanford, in his own style, mocking the former South Carolina governor for his extramarital affair and political failures. “When the former Governor of the Great State of South Carolina, @ MarkSanford, was reported missing, only to then say he was away hiking on the Appalachian Trail, then was found in Argentina with his Flaming Dancer friend, it sounded like his political career was over, the President jibed on Monday. Governor of South Carolina from 2003 to 2011 and Representative for much of the last three decades, Sanford unsuccessfully ran for re-election last year, only to be defeated by Trump-

backed candidate Katie Arrington in the June primary, a fact Trump was only too keen to remind him of. Sanford announced on Sunday that he would challenge the President for the Republican nomination next year, becoming the third Republican to enter the race. Political career aside, the meat of Trump’s tweet concerned Sanford’s 2009 affair with his Argentine mistress MarĂa BelĂŠn Chapur, a woman he described as his “soul mate.â€? After admitting to the Argentinian tryst, Sanford later told Associated Press that he would “tryâ€? to fall back in love with his wife. Sanford’s efforts were in vain though, and his wife Jenny filed for divorce later that year. “But now take heart,â€? Trump continued on Monday. “He is back and running for President of the

United States. The Three Stooges, all badly failed candidates, will give it a go! Sanford’s chances of stopping the Trump juggernaut are low. The President enjoys –if his

preferred polls are to be believed– a 94 percent approval rating among Republicans and the party has ruled out primary contests in three states; Kansas, Nevada, and even Sanford’s home

state of South Carolina. Even Sanford himself compared the task of defeating Trump from within the GOP to a “David and Goliath story.

Trump mocks primary challenge from Joe Sanford and his fellow ‘stooges.’

Seek Outdoor Entertainment for Personal Satisfaction

By Desert Star Staff Making time to enjoy the outdoors is a simple way to boost your physical and mental well-being, no matter your age. Whether you venture out to the porch to watch the sunset or lace up your golf shoes for an afternoon on the course, there are plenty of ways you can take in some fresh air. Going outside generally results in more physical activity than if you were to stay cooped up inside, and it’s an easy way to socialize and interact with others. It also plays an important part in maintaining your vibrancy. Get inspired to spend some quality time outside with these ideas: Take up a hobby. Planting a garden or tending a flower bed is terrific motivation to spend more time outdoors, and you’ll have the bounty of your work to enjoy, as well. Even a box garden designed for a smaller space requires regular care, so you’ll find yourself outdoors

on a consistent basis nurturing plants to grow. Take in a performance. Outdoor theaters offer numerous forms of entertainment from music concerts to plays. Before shopping for tickets, be sure to consider any discounts you might be able to use. For example, AARP members can find discounts on tickets for a wide range of events. Increase your exercise. Even if you have some physical limits, keeping your muscles stretched helps maintain mobility. That might mean taking a walk or playing a round of golf. You could gather family or neighbors for a game of croquet or just move outdoors to do your daily stretches. Find a way to blend your daily exercise with the chance to get some fresh air for maximum benefits. Go on a trip. The sights and sounds that go along with exploring somewhere new make it easy to enjoy spending time outside. Be sure to make plans for entertainment

al fresco is a treat when the weather cooperates, but you can incorporate a delicious meal as a bonus when you’re out and about even when the weather is less than ideal. You could opt to spend your wait time outdoors, or reward yourself after a walk with a special seafood, Italian or steak dinner. You might even pair the meal with a concert

local area’s attractions and prove you don’t have to go far to spend quality time together. Visit local landmarks. Just because it’s not a traditional vacation doesn’t mean you can’t pretend to be tourists. Start by visiting the places you recommend to friends and family from out of town or pick up a city guidebook to uncover hidden spots you may not even know exist. Make a plan to seek out historic sites, visit local landmarks like museums or try an out-of-the-way restaurant (or two) you’ve never eaten at before. Camp out in the backyard. Camping doesn’t have to be done far from home. In fact, it can be done right in your own backyard. Pitch a tent to sleep under the stars and plan a night full of traditional camping activities like roasting s’mores, telling spooky stories by flashlight and trying to identify stars and constellations. Set up a picnic in the park. Pack a basket with sandwiches, fruit and other treats and head to the park.

You can enjoy a casual meal then take advantage of the open space for a family walk or game of tag before retreating to the playground to let the little ones expel any leftover energy. Have a home spa day. If you’re looking for some relaxation but don’t want to splurge on the full spa treatment, plan an at-home oasis instead. Light some candles, run a bubble bath and break out the facial masks and fingernail polish. Visit an amusement park. No matter where you live, there’s probably an amusement or water park within driving distance. A quick online search before you arrive can help prepare a strategy for hitting the most popular thrill rides and waterslides while skipping those that may not provide quite the same entertainment value. Tony Award-Winning Drama “Amadeus” Wows Audiences

Cast of Amadeus. Photo by Aaron Rumley By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Member American Theatre Critics Association English playwright Sir Peter Schaffer’s stunning 1979 Tony-winning play “Amadeus; went on to win the 1985 Motion Picture Academy Award Oscar along with seven additional Oscar nominees who also won in the film version production categories. The motion picture is the director’s medium. It best captures the technical broad sweep required and the epic nature of stories being told: “Lawrence of Arabia,” “Gandhi,” “Out of Africa,” “Patton,” “Gone With the Wind” - with the burning of Atlanta scenes - come quickly to mind. It’s hard to measure the full impact of “Ben Hur” without the incredibly thrilling chariot race. On a silver 30 x 40 foot screen, motion picture stories become larger than life. Television became the love child of the cinema, perforce, by employing the cinema convention of the close-up; that was best suited for viewing in the home. Its strength lies in episodic comedy, sit-com formats, and a plethora of police procedurals, courtroom dramas, and detective driven action stories. The ancient Greek theatre’s rule of the “Unities,” doesn’t necessarily have to be observed in today’s TV entertainment platforms. The world of the stage, however, is the medium that belongs to the actor and the playwright along with the vision of the director. The stage is a living, breathing visual experience. It’s visceral, intellectual, and it’s immediate. It’s also a live tribal experience where audience involvement in the story and presentation in a darkened theatre, ups the ante of the creative artists performing on the stage. It’s the grand-daddy of the “spoken word” art form. NCRT Artistic Director David Ellenstein understands and values the artistry of www.desertstarweekly.com

professional performers. Technical challenges can occur when a decision is made to produce a large scale production on the intimate North Coast Rep stage. The issue quickly becomes how to solve these “pesky technical issues” in the staging of “Amadeus”? Award-winning Director Richard Baird quickly solves that dilemma along with his technical, creative team of Resident Set Design wizard Marty Burnett, along with NCRT Lighting Designer Matt Novotny, both of whom, over the years have created some of the most inventive set and lighting designs at NCRT. Director Baird’s bold vision required him to strip-down the script to 10 performing characters without sacrificing any of the drama and/or light comedy moments that run throughout Shaffer’s illuminating, potent, tragic story concerning the early death, at 35 years of age, of musical genius Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (an astonishing Rafael Goldstein). The cause of Mozart’s death became the buzz on

the street as we say now. Shaffer’s play, however, is a highly fictionalized account of composers Salieri and Mozart’s interactions during their time spent together in Vienna. Gossip, however, fuels the theory that Mozart was a victim of envy and jealousy at the hand of rival composer Antonio Salieri, the Kapellmeister of Vienna (a mesmerizing Tony Amendola) to the court of Holy Roman Emperor Joseph II, of Austria (Louis Totorto, in a finely nuanced comedy gem of a performance). Playwright Shaffer wisely leaves the decision of what really happened to Mozart to posterity and speculation. Such is the power of film and words from actors that can change fiction into reality. Truth, as they say, is stranger than fiction. However, truth doesn’t deliver the dramatic punch that an experienced, gifted, playwright, and a talented ensemble cast can bring to an intriguing plotline. Regardless, this production directed by one of California’s finest director’s is ‘great theatre’

to see, enjoy, and ruminate afterward about its veracity. The beauty of this splendid production lies in the performances of its two leading men: Salieri, brilliantly portrayed by Tony Amendola, (who bears an uncanny physical resemblance to actor F. Murray Abraham) and Mozart, played by Rafael Goldstein, in a highly-nuanced, amazing portrayal. Both men run the full gamut of emotions in sublime performances. I’ve seen three previous professional productions of the play. I wouldn’t exchange these two actors for any who have previously performed the roles. Also, enough cannot be said about the outstanding ensemble and their individual performances. Right from the opening scene, the audience realizes it’s in for a special evening of theatre. Christopher M. Williams and Alice Sherman, as characters Venticelli 1 and 2, respectfully, set the tone for the evening with crisp physical movements and inthe-moment-dialogue and vocal deliveries as they perform as a sort of delicious Greek

Chorus that keeps us abreast of what will take place over the course of the evening. Strong support also comes from: a vivacious Kathryn Tkel as Constanze Weber, Mozart’s fiancée and then wife; Andrew Barnicle as Baron Gottfreid Van Swieten; Andrew Oswald as Count Orsini-Rosenberg; Leigh Ellen Akin as Katherina Cavalieri, a music student of Salieri and Nick Kennedy as Count Johann Kilian von Strack. This impressive production is a feast for the eyes and ears thanks to the colorful costume designs of Elisa Benzoni, and Sound Design by Aaron Rumley, who arranged the absolutely glorious music of Mozart that is heard throughout the production. The Hair & Wig designs by Peter Herman are spot-on and add to the authenticity of the period. The Prop Design is provided by Phillip Korth. Aaron Rumley stage manages the production. “Amadeus” now on stage at North Coast Repertory Theatre in Solana Beach runs through October 6, 2019. It’s a Must-See Production!
