Playwright A.R. Gurney Comedy Resonates At North Coast Rep By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic I can’t think of a better way to launch North Coast Repertory Theatre’s 35th Season of live theatre than to present a sophisticated comedy of manners written by A. R. Gurney, one of America’s finest playwrights and a play that is stylishly and deliciously staged by Rosina Reynolds, one of Southern
California’s finest directors. Gurney, is definitely a product that one would call ‘old school’. He was born into a wealthy up-state New York family, who knows whereof he speaks when it comes to telling the story of an upper class, stuff-shirted New England family of privilege who over-react to the newest play that their middle aged writer/publisher/ playwright son has written
using the family as somewhat unflattering characters. Gurney is probably best known for this and earlier plays ‘The Dining Room’ and the huge megahit play still being produced that is a favorite of America’s over 60 set - ‘Love Letters’. In ‘The Cocktail Hour’, he hits the vanishing cultural nail of privilege right on the proverbial head. In America of the 50s, 60, early 70s, however,

the evening ritual of having a cocktail at the end of the work day (if one worked that is) with one’ spouse’ was the proper way to relax before the cook and maid announced that dinner was ready. Shades of Downton Abbey. In families of privilege where television was considered uncivilized and therefore beneath discussion, this nightly ritual would be where the news of the day,
and family gossip would be discussed and digested in a civilized manner, usually presided over by the father as titular head of the family. In ‘The Cocktail Hour’, Bradley (a terrific J. Michael Flynn) blusters and pontificates over a new play their son John (a solid Chris Petschler) has written. John drops by to get Continues on Page 19
Protests call on politicians nationwide to help poor, minorities
By Desert Star Staff Protesters in 30 states and Washington, DC have taken part in a “Higher Ground Moral Day of Action” as part of the “Moral Monday” movement. They have called on federal and local lawmakers to create policies that help, not hurt, the poor and minorities. The Moral Revival, an organization of national, and local progressive faith leaders planned the Higher Ground Moral Day of Action. The group held rallies in the 31 locations, and then delivered its “Higher Ground Moral
Declaration,” which calls on politicians at all levels “to move away from extremist politics and policies that benefit the few and move toward policies and laws that are just and fair and guarantee a better life for the majority of the people.” The format of the rallies was the same in all 30 states that participated in the day of action, as well as the nation’s capital. This included singing the same opening and closing songs, reciting the same litany and chanting the same lines. The day of action coincides with the weekly

investment vehicle or manager, ETF or mutual fund, stock or bond. Instead, securities are chosen based on whether or not they display one or more specific attributes or factors. Factor investing is a strategic approach that looks at diversification through a new lens. Outperforming stocks share certain traits, which are given the name “Factors. There are literally hundreds of potential factors that have been identified. It is simply selecting investments that seem to have the greatest probability of success. Because the approach is more strategy-based than productbased, advisors can select the least expensive, most efficient product that delivers consistent exposure to the chosen attributes. Firms today, are focused on Investments which are those that exhibit consistent factor exposures, broad diversification, low
turnover and low costs. By identifying the right factors and lowest cost possible, an exchange traded funds, (ETFs) portfolio can outperform a similarly allocated portfolio of mutual funds by 20 to 60 basis points. The reason is simple: Innovation and competition in the ETF marketplace has driven down costs, which gives the ETF portfolio a tailwind from a performance perspective. It’s just a bit less expensive, ‌ a difference that compounds over time. By considering particular attributes, capitalization and profitability, allocations into these investments, which prove to outperform over time, create successful outcomes. Put simply, to systematically “overweightâ€? securities that are expected to outperform over time, and “underweightâ€? those that research suggests may underperform will provide success and safety to the
investor over the long term. It is truly delivering the best of both worlds, at a cost far less than that of active management and more akin to indexing. The four factors that are believed to be most influential are: Size: The propensity for small-cap stocks to outperform large-cap stocks over time Relative Price: The tendency for value stocks to outperform growth stocks over time Quality: The propensity for companies with higher profitability ratios to outperform those with lowerprofitability ratios over time Momentum: The propensity for stocks with positive momentum to outperform the market in the near term and those with negative momentum to underperform the market in the near term Two additional factors are also very popular among asset managers, though are not
used as often as the first four: Low Volatility: The tendency for a security’s value to remain stable, changing in value at a steady pace over time Dividend Yield: The tendency for companies who pay steadily growing dividends (relative to their share price) to outperform the market over time. This is highly correlated with the “Relative Price or “Value factor. The goal is to build and hold a broadly diversified global portfolio that offers exposure to a designated set of risk and return factors in an efficient, low-cost way.
By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. In 2000, a new “toxic moldâ€? panic swept the country, and sixteen years, untold lawsuits, and billions of dollars later, major myths still plague and unnecessarily panic association boards, managers and homeowners. The myths all too often cause exaggerated repairs, unduly frightened residents, and conflict. In this and the next column, I will address thirteen pervasive myths. Mold is new. Mold, one of the earliest and simplest life forms, has existed for thousands of years. Almost a hundred years ago, mold was the basis of the discovery of penicillin. Mold is everpresent, as is dust or pollen. The scientific and medical communities confirm mold’s many dangers. In 2004, the National Institute of Medicine published its comprehensive study on indoor mold exposure, called “Damp Indoor Spaces and Health.â€? A central finding was: “Scientific evidence links mold ‌ in homes and buildings to asthma symptoms in some people with the chronic disorder, as well as to coughing, wheezing, and upper respiratory tract symptoms in otherwise healthy people‌ However, the available evidence does not support an association between ‌ mold and the wide range of other health complaints that have been ascribed.â€? That sounds like mold is dangerous the same as is dust or pollen – to people with severe
asthma. The announcement containing this finding is easily located by a web search, but it did not receive much press play – stories of frightened people living in tents are more interesting. One must determine the kind of mold present. Mold consultants and plaintiff attorneys often describe some molds as worse than others. The most famous mold is stachybotrys chartarum, a mold producing infinitesimal quantities of a substance similar to botulism poison. However, the amount is so small they call it ‘mycotoxin’. It sounds frightening, but the scientific community long ago debunked the myth that this or any mold was somehow poisonous to breathe. For example, read the National Institute of Health Fact Sheet on Mold, found at www.niehs.nih.gov. California is protected by the Toxic Mold Protection Act of 2001. The “Toxic
Mold Protection Act of 2001, found at Health and Safety Code 26100, instructed the Department of Public Health to develop Permissible Exposure Limits of the various mold strains. However, in 2005, and again in 2008, the DPH reported that the task could not be completed with the scientific information available. Consequently, there is presently no official standard as to how many mold spores of any given variety are “unhealthy. Always start with a mold test. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends against mold testing. There is no standard as to how many mold spores are “unhealthy, and indoor air sampling tests are extremely vulnerable to events in the home changing the results. A recent shower, window opening or carpet cleaning are some of the many factors which can completely change test outcomes.
Mold tests, bluntly, primarily frighten the occupants and create a “need for the expense of a mold consultant a second test after the area is cleaned. Since the health authorities have not confirmed any particular strain is more dangerous, and since there is no official standard as to how many airborne spores are unhealthy, there is rarely a good reason to spend the money on such a test. 3 Things You May Not Know about Life Insurance Today
By Desert Star Staff If you’re like many Americans, you may spend substantial time and energy on general financial planning while overlooking the various ways life insurance may fit into that plan. Life insurance has wide-ranging benefits for people of all ages that you should consider, say experts. “There is a significant opportunity for life insurance to help you achieve financial security during any age of saving, and for the many concerns you face throughout your lifetime,” says Andrew Bucklee, senior vice president and head of Insurance Solutions Distribution for Lincoln Financial Distributors. “It should be part of most consumers’ long-term financial plan.” September is Life Insurance Awareness Month and the perfect opportunity
to learn more about how it can help you protect your financial security. Here are a few things to consider. • If you only associate life insurance with helping address funeral expenses or estate planning, take note, depending on the type of policy, life insurance can potentially be used to protect against concerns like retirement savings, loss of household income due to illness, children’s college tuition expenses and long-term care in retirement. What’s more, life insurance can be used as an overarching vehicle for wealth protection. • Some carriers are stepping up their technology to make life insurance easy to research, purchase and manage in the same way you may have come to expect from other businesses in today’s digital world. Lab free
underwriting, electronic policy delivery options and telephone application processes are all a reality in today’s marketplace, and are eliminating much of the time consuming paperwork and correspondence typically associated with obtaining a life insurance policy. • Each generation has a different set of financial priorities. Younger generations are focused on paying off student loan debt or credit card debt. For Baby Boomers, one of the greatest worries is the cost of healthcare in retirement, with 66 percent citing that as a pressing concern in a recent study by Lincoln. Because life insurance can potentially help address all these concerns, people of all ages should evaluate their life insurance options. “Studies show that people are beginning their financial

By Desert Star Staff TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — As Floridians prepare to cast their ballots in November, a new analysis looks at the impact on health-care coverage in the state of a Trump versus a Clinton presidency. Republican nominee Donald Trump has said he would eliminate the Affordable Care Act’s health insurance marketplace, which is the online exchange Floridians, can use to buy coverage. Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, on the other hand, has said she would work to strengthen the A.C.A.
A report from Families USA Action Fund found that without the marketplace, more than 1 million Floridians would lose their health care coverage. According to the executive director of the fund, Ron Pollack, Latinos, AfricanAmericans, women and young adults would be hardest hit. “Only 12 percent of Florida’s young adults, between the ages of 18 and 25, have job-based health insurance,” Pollack said. “And that’s why the marketplaces that provide individual coverage are significant.” According to the report,
Trump’s plan to repeal the A.C.A. would impact hundreds of thousands of additional Floridians, especially those with pre-existing conditions and those receiving Medicaid. Clinton, meanwhile, has said she would offer incentives to states such as Florida that have not yet expanded Medicaid. That would make a huge difference to the state’s Latino population, said Rafael Collazo, political director with the National Council of La Raza. “We’re continuing the fight on a state level to get access to health care for
planning sooner, which is great to see,” says Bucklee. “No matter what your age, it’s important to fully understand your life insurance options available through both financial
advisors and workplace benefit packages. Advisors and employers are great resources that can help individuals unleash the full potential of life insurance.” StatePoint

As Congress Debates, Coal Ash Cleanup Happens in SE States
By Desert Star Staff CHARLESTON, W.V. — As Congress debates the issue, utilities and communities in southeastern states are moving ahead with clean up of millions of tons of coal ash in impoundments at power plants. Until recently, Congress had been deadlocked regarding this legacy of a coal-powered century. In the meantime, groups like the Southern Environmental Law Center have pushed utilities in southern coastal states to take the waste from the big storage ponds and bury it in dry, lined landfills. Frank Holleman, senior attorney with the center, said cleanup projects are happening across Georgia and North and South Carolina. “We’re moving toward a recognition by communities and utilities that this unlined storage
of ash in earthen pits next to waterways just is not a good idea long term,” Holleman said. Coal ash ponds can leak arsenic, lead, heavy metals and mercury into the waterways where power plants are typically located. Some members of Congress have argued that the coal ash is not that hazardous and should not be treated like hazardous waste. There are now some signs of motion on the issue at the federal level. The EPA has imposed what Holleman called minimal storage standards and effluent limits. But the senate is considering language that critics charge could undermine those standards. In the House, West Virginia Congressman David McKinley has proposed legislation he said would increase recycling of
the waste. But Holleman said recycling is already happening. “So you don’t need a new law from politicians in Washington,” Holleman said. “Instead, what the proposed legislation’s trying to do is weaken the new minimum rules that EPA has put into place.” He said some drinking water sources in South Carolina are seeing 60 to 90 percent reductions in the levels of certain pollutants. The cleanup is especially important near the coast, given sea-level rise from climate change. According to Holleman, sometimes it has taken lawsuits to get results, but not always. “In many instances, the utilities have decided on their own to remove the ash from these dangerous, old, aging, unlined pits.”

By Desert Star Staff AUSTIN, Texas -Advocates and educators plan to go before the Texas State Board of Education this week to demand the board reject a controversial MexicanAmerican studies textbook. The group, the Responsible Ethnic Studies Textbook Coalition, is trying to prevent the book from ever making it into a Texas classroom, saying it is riddled with errors, deeply offensive, and presents a distorted picture of Mexican-Americans. Board of Education member Ruben Cortez Jr. of Brownsville, who led a panel of scholars analyzing the text, said he’s in favor of teaching Mexican-American
studies in Texas schools, but not with this book. “As a board, we cannot allow any textbook that simply lies to our students and, in this particular case, disparages their race,” Cortez said. “We can’t allow any book that has any racist remarks to enter into our public schools.” According to Cortez, panel members not only found more than 140 factual errors in the text of “MexicanAmerican Heritage” but also discovered several references they considered racist. The book was proposed by publisher Virginia Dunbar, a former board member, who defended the text, saying her company did not consult Mexican-American scholars

Brad Powell, president of the Arizona Wildlife Federation, said that in 2012, 70 percent of Arizona voters rejected a statewide initiative to transfer federal lands to the state. “It failed in every legislative district in the state,” Powell said. “So we think it’s an unpopular idea and we think legislators are out of step with their constituents.” The Legislature did establish a committee to study public land transfer. It was charged with producing a report with recommendations by 2019. Justice by Income: Fines, Fees Push MA Youth Into Custody By Desert Star Staff BOSTON – When a young person is unable to pay court related costs, he or she could face a type of debtors’ prison; a practice a new report says can pull juveniles deeper into the justice system. In Massachusetts, the court may order parents to pay a large number of fees, including daily fees for having a GPS, participating in court ordered programs or having an attorney appointed, even though the family is considered too poor to afford one. Naoka Carey, executive director of Massachusetts Citizens for Juvenile Justice, says forcing young people into custody for these debts is not helpful to the main goal of rehabilitation
for the youthful offender. “Imposing these kinds of fees makes it harder for kids to get on the right track,” she states. “In Massachusetts, our juvenile courts start as young as age 7, so you’re talking about an 8, 9 or 10-year-old having to pay a fine. There’s no way they can get a job.” The report by the Juvenile Law Center recommends that states eliminate costs, fines and fees by establishing more sustainable and effective models for funding court systems. While Massachusetts’s courts can have some discretion as to whether they impose some of the fees, and the Legislature eliminated daily juvenile probation fees in July, the report says fines and
fees still are resulting in longer placement for Bay State youth and more debt for their families. According to the Juvenile Law Center findings, when a family can’t pay up, a young person can be placed in a secure facility or have his or her probation extended. Jessica Feierman, the Center’s associate director, calls it a punishment for being poor. “We’re creating two separate systems of justice,” she states. “This is really a glaring example of justice by income. “We really can do better. We can set a system that’s fair to all young people, not just the ones who have access to money.” Other penalties for

Two years ago, the state scrapped the Academic Performance Index system, and the federal “No Child Left Behind” program was replaced by “Every Student Succeeds.” Brad Strong, senior director at the nonprofit group, Children Now, said the dual system made it hard for parents to get a clear picture of a school’s progress, and the bill is a chance to change that. “So, it was really confusing to the public, ‘Well, why are they failing under the federal system and seem to be doing OK under the state system?’ So what we’re really trying to do is ensure that we don’t revisit the days where we had two separate accountability systems, that you have one aligned, state, federal and local,” he said. The new bill would mandate that the state program
meet federal requirements. Meanwhile, the State Board of Education is already moving ahead, adopting an accountability plan on Thursday that critics say is too complex. Strong also believes the system adopted on Thursday moves in the wrong direction. “They were still focused on English language, arts and math, they weren’t including science,” he explained. “They weren’t at inclusion of suspensions and expulsions, and chronic absence and school climate. So, there were other measures that also we felt were important.” The governor has a little less than a month to determine the fate of AB 2548. He could sign the bill, veto it, or let it become law without a signature. The State Board of Education is expected to approve a final version of the accountability plan by the 2017-2018 school year.

By Desert Star Staff SEATTLE – The school year is in full swing once again, and some students might dread that their reading skills aren’t up to par. But a new report from Reading Partners Seattle shows all these students might need is more one-on-one help. Afi Tengue, the literacy support group’s executive director, says volunteers with her organization are able to provide support to students in under-resourced schools who might not get the attention they need in large classrooms. “One teacher can only focus on so many kids at a time, and so when a student needs specific help and there isn’t a teacher’s assistant and there isn’t in-class tutoring,
programs like Reading Partners with one-on-one time focus explicitly on what the students need,” she explains. The Reading Partners report showed 83 percent of the students the group helped last year mastered key skills needed to read at grade level. Two-thirds of fourth graders in Washington aren’t able to read at grade level, according to the Annie E. Casey Foundation. Tengue says there always is a need for more volunteers to help children read. She says it’s an incredibly important task and has ramifications for students down the road. For instance, children who aren’t able to read at grade level by fourth grade are much less likely to

Remembering Lenny Bruce By Paul Krassner August 3rd marks the 50th anniversary of controversial comedian Lenny Bruce’s death from an overdose of morphine, while his New York obscenity conviction at Café Au Go Go was still on appeal, and on this same day he received a foreclosure notice at his Los Angeles home. But it wasn’t suicide. In the kitchen, a kettle of water was still boiling, and in his office, the electric typewriter was still humming. He had stopped typing in mid-word: “Conspiracy to interfere with the 4th Amendment const”--constitutes what? Lenny was a subscriber to my satirical magazine, The Realist, and in 1959 we met for the first time at the funky Hotel America in Times Square. He was amazed that I got away with publishing those profane words for which other periodicals used asterisks or dashes. He had been using euphemisms like frig and asked, “Are you telling me this is legal to sell on the newsstands?” I replied, “The Supreme Court’s definition of obscenity is that it has to be material which appeals to your prurient interest.” He magically produced an unabridged dictionary from the suitcase on his bed, and looked up the word prurient. He closed the dictionary, clenching his jaw and nodding his head in affirmation of a new discovery. “So,” he observed, “it’s against the law to get you horny.” When we were about to leave the room, he stood in the doorway. “Did you steal anything?” he asked furtively. I took my watch out of my pocket since I didn’t like to wear it on my wrist, and without saying a word I placed it on the bureau. Lenny laughed one loud staccato “Ha!” and kissed me on the forehead. We developed a friendship integrated with stand-up comedy. Lenny had broken through traditional stereotypical jokes about airplane food, nagging wives, Chinese drivers, mothers-in-law. Instead he weaved his taboobreaking targets--teachers’ low salaries vs. show-business celebs, religious leaders’ hypocrisy, cruel abortion laws, racial injustice, the double standard between illegal and prescription drugs--into streamof-consciousness vignettes. In each succeeding performance, he would sculpt and re-sculpt his concept into a theatrical context, experimenting from show to show like a jazz-jargon musician. Audience laughter would turn into clapping for the creative process itself. “Please don’t applaud,” he requested. “It breaks my rhythm.” Lenny was intrigued by the www.desertstarweekly.com
implications of an item in The Realist, an actual statement by Adolf Eichmann that he would have been “not only a scoundrel, but a despicable pig” if he hadn’t carried out Hitler’s orders. Lenny wrote a piece for The Realist, “Letter From a Soldier’s Wife”-namely, Mrs. Eichmann-pleading for compassion to spare her husband’s life. Lenny was writing an autobiography--How to Talk Dirty and Influence People-which Playboy planned to serialize, then publish as a book, and Hugh Hefner hired me as his editor. We met in Atlantic City. At a certain point he was acting paranoid and demanded that I take a liedetector test. I was paranoid enough to take him literally. I couldn’t work with him if he didn’t trust me. We got into an argument, and I left. He sent a telegram that sounded like we were on the verge of divorce-WHY CAN’T IT BE THE WAY IT USED TO BE? I agreed to try again, and in 1962 I flew to Chicago. Lenny was performing at the Gate of Horn. He was asking the whole audience to take a lie-detector test. With a German accent, he asked, “Do you people think yourselves better because you burned your enemies at long distance with missiles without ever seeing what you had done to them? Hiroshima auf Wiedersehen. [German accent ends.] “If we would have lost the war, they would have strung Truman up by the balls, Jim. Are you kidding with that? Not what kid told kid told kid. They would just schlep out all those Japanese mutants. ‘Here they did; there they are.’ And Truman said they’d do it again. That’s what they should have the same day as Remember Pearl Harbor. Play them in unison.” Lenny was arrested for obscenity that night. One of the items in the Chicago police report complained: “Then talking about the war he stated, ‘If we would have lost the war, they would have strung Truman up by the balls.’” The cops also broke open Lenny’s candy bars, looking for drugs. And the club’s liquor license was suspended. They checked the IDs of audience members, including George Carlin, who told the cops, “I don’t believe in IDs.” Then they arrested him for disorderly conduct, dragged him along by the seat of his pants and hoisted him into the police wagon. “What are you doing here?” Lenny asked. “I didn’t want to show them my ID.” “You schmuck.” Since he often talked on stage about his environment, and since police cars and courtrooms had become his environment, the content of Lenny’s performances began to revolve more and more

around the inequities of the legal system. “In the Halls of Justice,” he declared, “the only justice is in the halls.” But he also said, “I love the law.” Instead of an unabridged dictionary, he now carried law books in his suitcase. His room was cluttered with tapes, transcripts. photostats, law journals, legal briefs. In less than two years, Lenny was arrested fifteen times. Once he was teasing his ten-year-old daughter, Kitty, by pretending not to believe what she was telling him. “Daddy,” she said, “you’d believe me if it was on tape.” Club owners were afraid to book him. He couldn’t get a gig in six months. On a Christmas day, he was alone in his hotel room, and I brought him a $500 bill. With a large safety pin, he attached it to his denim jacket. When he finally got a booking in Monterey, he admitted, “I feel like it’s taking me away from my work.” Lenny lived way up in the hills. His house was protected by barbed wire and a concrete gate, except that it was always open. He had a wall-to-wall one-way mirror in his living room, but when the sun was shining you could see into the room instead of out. He was occasionally hassled by police on his own property. One evening in October 1963, we were talking while he was shaving, when four officers suddenly appeared, loud and obnoxious. He asked them to leave unless they had a search warrant. One of the cops took out his gun. “Here’s my search warrant,” he said. Then Lenny and the cops had a discussion about the law, such as the rules of evidence, and after half an hour they left. Lenny tried to take it all in stride, but the encounter was depressing, and he changed his mind about going out that night. When everything was quiet, we went outside and stood at the edge of his unused swimming pool. Dead leaves floated in the water. Lenny cupped his hands to his mouth. “All right, you dogs,” he called out. “Bark for the rich man!”--thereby setting off a chain reaction of barking dogs, a canine chorus echoing through Hollywood Hills. September 14, 2016
We ordered some pizza, and he played some old tapes, ranging from a faith healer to patriotic World War II songs. “Good-bye, Mama, I’m off to Yokohama, the Land of Yama-Yama…” Back at the Café Au Go Go arrest in New York, Lenny had told a fantasy tale about Eleanor Roosevelt, quoting her, “I’ve got the nicest tits that have ever been in this White House…” The top of the police complaint was “Eleanor Roosevelt and her display of tits.” At the trial, Lenny had acted as his own attorney. He obtained the legislative history of an Albany statute, and he discovered that back in 1931 there was an amendment proposed, which excluded from arrest in an indecent performance: stagehands, spectators, musicians, and-here was the fulcrum of his defense--actors. The law had been misapplied to him. Despite opposition by the New York Society for the Suppression of Vice, the amendment was finally signed into law by then-Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt, but to no avail. “Ignoring the mandate of Franklin D. Roosevelt,” Lenny observed, “is a great deal more offensive than saying Eleanor has lovely nay-nays.” On October 13, 1965 (Lenny’s 40th birthday), instead of surrendering to the authorities in New York, he filed suit at the U.S. District Court in San Francisco to keep out of prison, and he got himself officially declared a pauper. Two months before his death in 1966, Lenny wrote to me: “I’m still working on the bust of the government of New York State.” He included his doodle of Christ nailed to a crucifix, with a speech balloon asking, “Where the hell is the ACLU?” At a séance, Lenny’s mother brought his old faded denim jacket. That large safety-pin was still attached to it. And at the funeral, his sound-engineer friend dropped Lenny’s microphone into his grave before the dirt was piled on. Lenny’s problem had been that he wanted to talk on stage with the same freedom that he had in his living room. That problem doesn’t happen to stand-up comedians anymore.

By Desert Star Staff BOISE, Idaho – The scars of war might be deeper for soldiers who come from poorer areas of the country, according to a new study. Francis Shen of the University of Minnesota and Douglas Kriner from the University of Boston looked at more than 500,000 American combat casualties since World War II, and found a growing trend of unequal health services for soldiers after they come home. Shen says many veterans who return to lower-income communities struggle to find mental health services. “A good proportion of them don’t have the benefit of some of those structures,” he points out. “It makes reintegration more difficult, it makes recovery from posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) more difficult, it might lead to an increase in other sorts of challenges such as addiction. And that can be cumulative.” The study, “Invisible
Inequality: The Two Americas of Military Sacrifice,” found communities with lower incomes have higher casualty rates. Veterans Affairs has one medical center in Boise and eight communitybased outpatient clinics across Idaho. Shen says more people from low-income communities see the armed forces as a career path because other career and educational paths aren’t affordable options. “Where it’s hitting hardest are those, I would say, the lower-middle class or the working class,” he points out. “Individuals who see opportunity – good opportunity – in the military, and we’re all for that, but then who might not have some of the service provisions at the end that we think they ought to.” Shen adds politicians from the major parties rarely talk about this reality, even though income inequality and national security are two of the

Disney’s ‘Jungle Book’ Now on DVD
Rudyard Kipling’s epic adventure “The Jungle Book” is a classic tale about a young boy named Mowgli who was raised by a family of wolves deep in the Indian jungle. When the jungle animals are confronted by the fierce tiger Shere Kahn (voiced menacingly by Idris Elba) who wants to kill the boy; Mowgli (Neel Sethi) escapes into the jungle where he is befriended by Baloo the Bear (Bill Murray) and a black panther named Bagheera. In fact, it was Baheera (Sir Ben Kingsley) who found the abandoned child years earlier and brought him to the wolf family who accepted the ‘man
cub’ as one of their own. Once again, Mowgli is adrift in the jungle, but the bear and panther soon become his new protective family. Kipling’s story was first told on film in 1942 and starred Sabu as Mowgli. Then in 1967 Walt Disney crafted an animated version of the tale and set it to the catchy tunes created by the Sherman brothers, Robert and Richard, who wrote, “Bare Necessities” sung by Mowgli and Baloo, “Trust in Me” which is hissed hypnotically by Kaa, the python (Scarlett Johansson in this latest film) and “I Wan’na Be Like You,” now sung by

Free Yourself of Your Phone: While we all know that smartphone technology and other mobile devices offer us useful information, in an emergency scenario these devices may lose their signal or their battery life. Stay prepared and informed no matter what happens with wearable technology that is not at the mercy of a cellphone tower or a battery that needs to be recharged every few hours. For example Casio’s PRO TREK PRG300 timepieces feature functions like an altimeter, compass and barometer (great for staying aware of changes in temperature or air pressure). They also deliver
this information hands-free, which can be useful any day of the week but extra valuable in an emergency. Get Insured: Is your home and property properly insured? Know what your homeowners insurance covers and determine whether it is sufficient to meet your needs. 45,000 Wild Horses to be killed by Bureau of Land Management
By Desert Star Staff Few animals in the US are as romanticized as horses. From gracing the covers of cheesy romance novels or spaghetti westerns, to being the stereotypical rich person’s pet, horses occupy a unique cultural space. But the US government is about to kill 45,000 of them. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is under fire after deciding to euthanize 45,000 unadopted wild horses it has been keeping in holding facilities across the US. The wild horses were removed from their natural habitat by the BLM so that privately-owned cattle could graze on the land for profit. The decision hasn’t been particularly well received. The Humane Society referred to it as “a complete abdication of
responsibility for their care,” and panned the bureau for not using birth control to curtail the growth of the population. The equines can be adopted from the facilities for $125 apiece, but even purchasing all 45,000 of them for $5,625,000 would do little to offset the $49 million that the BLM spent on them last year, according to The Verge. The $49 million spoke for over half of the entire budget for the Bureau of Land Management’s National Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board. Some don’t believe that wild horses deserve any more special treatment than any other non-native species, such as the Norwegian rats that practically own the New York City transit system. Horses first arrived in the US with
the conquistadors in the late 15th century, too recently “for native North American plants and animals to adapt to the pressures of coexistence,” according to Slate. The threats wild horses
pose to the environment are serious, with the grasslands they occupy covered with “biotic crusts” that hold desert soils down, preventing them from being blown away. However, horses trample and
pulverize this crust with their hooves, damaging the earth. This layer of topsoil can take hundreds of years to recover from the mustang’s damage.
By Desert Star Staff With the presidential election dominating the news cycles, many investors may be keeping an eye on the stock market as well as the voting
booth as they wonder what impact the election of Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump could have on their portfolios. “Presidential elections are almost always a big part of
the greater theme of markets, but in this case even more so,” says Benjamin Lupu, a Certified Financial Planner and founder of Kensington AMI (www.KensingtonAMI.com),
an asset-management firm. Lupu says it’s important to understand that how voters weigh their Election Day choices and how the market views the candidates aren’t necessarily the same thing. As hard as it might be, he says, investors should lay aside any personal political leanings as they assess what factors might keep the market humming and what factors might upset the market – and affect their investments in the process. “From an investment standpoint, this isn’t about being for one candidate or the other,” Lupu says. “It’s a matter of trying to gauge what the markets might do depending on different scenarios, and trying to plan and respond accordingly.” He says factors to consider include: • The Clinton impact. What ever opinion people may have of Clinton, she represents status quo, continuity and predictability, which markets prefer, Lupu says. Markets in general have been buoyant in recent months as a decisive win for Clinton had been the consensus expectation and has been priced into the markets. Those expectations could change quickly, though, and investors would need to consider adjustments if they do. “Harsh reality may have something to say about this before the process is over, and any reversal in the polls can greatly upset markets,” he says.
• The Trump impact. Trump is extremely popular with his populist base in the U.S., and some people would consider a Trump victory good for business. The wild card, though, is that he’s immensely unpopular in much of the rest of the world, Lupu says. If the race is seen as close, or if Trump is considered to have a strong chance of winning, global markets could react negatively, at least initially. If the odds of a Trump win appear to be improving, it might be a good idea for investors to reduce exposure, stay partially in cash and see what transpires, Lupu says. • A general approach. Financial security in the U.S. has traditionally come from three things: sound, long-term process; clear, unemotional thinking; and American optimism, Lupu says. “I like to say keep it clean, be disciplined and have faith in the future,” he says. In this case, that means be aware of market expectations, follow what happens, but stay focused and make prudent decisions based on facts and not emotions – or personal political preferences. In any other presidential election year, Lupu says, he wouldn’t advocate keeping such a close watch on who’s ahead in the polls and the implications behind the poll numbers. But Clinton vs. Trump is far from the typical race. “I admit this is not the usual playbook for election years,” Lupu says. “But then, this election is not the usual affair.”

Classic rock fans know 2016 is their year; a number of legendary artists who earned their biggest hits in the ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s are back with new collections that both celebrate and build on their legacies.
Artist: ZZ Top Title: Live! Greatest Hits From Around the World (Suretone Records) You might like if you enjoy: ZZ Top, Buddy Guy, Jeff Beck Tell me more: It’s difficult to think of a classic Rock and Roll Hall of Fame outfit spawned in the late 1960s whose founding lineup remains unchanged while dishing out tasty versions of its best-known material as powerfully as ever. That’s exactly the case with ZZ Top; the blues-rock trio formed in Houston, Texas in 1969 heard unleashing fiery versions of many of their best-known songs on “Live! Greatest Hits From Around the World.” The 15-track disc showcases singer-guitarist Billy F Gibbons, singer-bassist Dusty Hill and drummer Frank Beard via recordings captured on three continents over the course of several recent tours. Standout tracks on this great collection include the driving

He says the proposition that would make non-violent state criminals eligible for early parole would also release violent criminals putting public safety at risk. Hestrin read a litany of crimes that under the law are considered non violent, “Rape of an unconscious person, human trafficking involving sex acts with minors, drive by shooting, assault with a deadly weapon, taking a hostage, domestic violence involving trauma, supplying a

Other favorites on the set include “Too Much Time On My Hands,” “Rockin’ the Paradise” and “Renegade.” Information: eagle-rock.com.
Artist: Toto Title: Live at Montreux 1991 (Eagle Rock Entertainment) You might like if you enjoy: Toto, Kansas Tell me more: In the early 1990s, Toto returned to action as a quartet featuring founding members Steve Lukather (guitar, lead vocals), David Paich (keyboards, vocals), and brothers Jeff Porcaro (drums, percussion) and Mike Porcaro (bass). That specific lineup is featured on the wonderful live collection “Live at Montreux 1991” DVD+CD release (also available as Blu-ray + CD and via digital video versions) that kicks off with two original progrock selections (“On the Run” and the title track from what would be the band’s 1992

The July 2014 concert release has now been released on DVD, Blu-ray and digital video and was worth the wait. A number of the band’s memorable songs are showcased, including a rousing “Blue Collar Man (Long Nights)” where lead guitarist Don Felder (the Eagles) trades masterful fret work with Styx lead guitarists Tommy Shaw and James “JY” Young. Artist: Marillion Title: F E A R (EarMusic) You might like if you enjoy: Peter Gabriel, Genesis, Porcupine Tree Tell me more: Few progressive rock artists can walk the tightrope between symphonic highs and sparse introspection like Marillion. But those for the proposition backed by Governor Jerry Brown say that this proposition does not automatically release criminals but gives them incentives to complete education and rehab programs that give them credits towards earlier parole board hearings. “All that will happen is that the offender will get to the parole board earlier and is eligible for parole earlier, it doesn’t mean they’re going to get it and you’ll have a parole board that’s made up of criminal justice practitioners, mostly retired that are going to look at the full jacket, the full file on that inmate,” says the President of Chiefs Probation Officers of California, Mark Bonini. Mother Teresa to become Catholic saint canonization will happen, Italian media speculate that the ceremony may take place in the first week of September, during Francis’ Holy Year of Mercy, to coincide with the anniversary of Mother Teresa’s death. Mother Teresa was born in Macedonia as Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu in 1910. In 1949 she founded the Missionaries of Charity and by 1997 the order had nearly 4,000 nuns and ran hundreds of shelters, clinics, orphanages and soup kitchens around the world. Some critics accused Mother Teresa and the order of trying to convert people to Christianity. This was denied by the Missionaries of Charity, which stated that many of the people they were helping were non-Christian and already on their deathbeds, with virtually no time to swap religions.
By Desert Star Staff The Catholic Church has recognized a second miracle attributed to Mother Teresa, meaning that she may now
be made a saint come 2017. It takes two miracles to acquire sainthood in the Roman Catholic Church. In the first step to becoming
a saint, Mother Teresa was beatified in 2003. Back then; Pope John Paul II accepted as a miracle her curing of an Indian woman suffering
from an abdominal tumor. The second miracle, which has just been recognized by Pope Francis, is from 2008 and involves the healing of a man from Brazil suffering from several brain tumors. Mother Teresa, a Nobel Peace Prize winner, died in 1997. Known as ‘the Saint of the Gutters,’ she dedicated her life to helping the poorest of the poor, working in the slums of Calcutta, India. A spokeswoman for Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta told Reuters that the nuns “were over the moon.” “We thought her whole life was a miracle. Her whole life was dedicated to the poor and there was nothing else in her mind than service. Everyone was accepted and there was no obstruction in her work.” Although it is still unclear where and when the

By Desert Star Staff DENVER – Findings from a study on the potential impact of raising Colorado’s minimum wage are being challenged by economists citing faulty assumptions and questionable research methods. The report, released by the conservative think tank Common Sense Policy Roundtable, claims raising wages could lead to significant job loss in the state. Chris Stiffler, lead author and economist with the
Colorado Fiscal Institute said the report is misleading and falls short of common academic standards. “This is a big issue that’s going to influence a lot of people across Colorado and a lot of communities, and I think voters need to know the facts,” he said. “They shouldn’t get away without having rigorous, academically approved and tested findings, when you’re going to start throwing numbers around like 90,000 job-loss figures.”
In November, Coloradans get to vote on a ballot initiative that would raise the state’s minimum wage from just over $8 an hour to $12 an hour by 2020. Stiffler said nearly half a million Coloradans would be affected by the measure, and if approved, 86 percent of workers to get a raise would be age 20 or older. Stiffler said the Roundtable study fails to provide basic information standards for peer-reviewable research, such as statistical
margins for error, and cherry picks previous research findings in a way that paints a worst-case scenario. Stiffler’s team tested the report’s prediction model using real-world data from 2006, the last time Colorado raised its minimum wage. He said using the Roundtable formula, Colorado should have lost 23,000 jobs, but the state actually added more than 71,000 jobs. “Employment grew pretty steadily in 2007 and
2008 after an increase in the minimum wage,” he noted. “So his model was well off on predicting job-loss numbers.” According to the Colorado Center on Law and Policy, the state’s current minimum wage isn’t enough for single adults working full-time to meet basic needs in most parts of the state, and Colorado parents can’t support even one child without turning to public assistance.

Former British PM David Cameron resigns as MP Former Prime Minister David Cameron has resigned from Parliament with immediate effect. The MP for Witney announced he was stepping down in an interview with ITV. His resignation comes weeks after he resigned as prime minister having failed to secure a ‘Remain’ vote in the June 23 EU referendum. The Independent’s parliamentary sketch writer Tom Peck described Cameron as “the worst prime minister in a hundred years” shortly after his resignation as PM. For some, the former PM’s legacy was ruined overnight when his gamble to keep Britain in the EU and silence a rebellious minority of strongly anti-EU Tory MPs failed spectacularly and led to Brexit. Up until that, point Cameron had faced down the threat of an independent Scotland and won a general
election with enough members to form the first Conservative majority government since John Major’s. The Eton-educated son of an investment banker paid the ultimate political price for his overconfidence. For others, Cameron’s legacy was always going to be a terrible one. Coming to power under the banner of ‘Broken Britain,’ Britain’s youngest prime minister in almost 200 years unleashed a wave of austerity policies so harsh even the International Monetary Fund (IMF) urged him rein it in. These policies resulted in hundreds of thousands of job losses in the public sector as government departments and local councils were forced to slash their budgets. According to Public Leaders Network editor David Walker, the central
government alone sacked around 100,000 employees while the wider public sector lost a further 300,000. Cameron’s premiership saw a rapid rise in the number of food banks used across Britain. In 2014, some 27 Anglican bishops and other leading religious figures wrote an open letter to the former PM blaming government policy on the huge rise in food poverty. Foreign policy was considered so ineffective under Cameron that even US President Barack Obama publicly criticized it. In an unprecedented attack on a sitting British PM, Obama sharply condemned the UK’s role in allowing Libya to become a “shit show.” Obama singled out Cameron, suggesting he had taken his eye off Libya after being “distracted by a range of other things.”

In a brutal attack against the Democratic Party, who he claims has been controlling inner city areas for “a hundred years straight,” Trump said a “new agenda” was needed. “The Democratic Party has run the inner cities for 50, 60,

During a speech in August in the blue-collar city of Akron, Ohio, he said that “in war-zones in countries that we are fighting… it is safer than living in some of our inner cities that are run by the Democrats.” Trump also said that

In New York, three dozen clergy and people affected by the Empire State’s policies regarding the poor, ill, children, immigrants, communities of color and religious minorities marched through Albany to the State Capitol. There, the group delivered the Higher Ground Moral Declaration to the offices of Governor Andrew Cuomo and leaders in the legislature, the Albany Times Union reported. By Desert Star Staff Hunger is driving desperate US teenagers as young as 13 to search for ways to feed themselves and their families, with many resorting to crime or providing sexual favors in exchange for food and basic supplies, according to a study published Monday. Researchers from the Urban Institute, a Washingtonbased economic and social policy research group, paired up with Feeding America – a US network of food banks – in an attempt to find out “how food insecurity affects teenagers.” They created two focus groups – one male, one female – in the 10 poorest communities across the States, including those in major cities such as Chicago and Los Angeles, as well as in some rural towns. Researchers interviewed 193 boys and girls aged 13 to 18, all anonymously, over the course of three years – and were deeply concerned at the results. “What emerged was a portrait of impossible choices imposed upon teenagers who are forced to transition into adulthood much too quickly,”the report states. “When faced with severe food insecurity, teens can
policy and practice, such as “increasing nutrition assistance benefits [and] creating more and better youth job opportunities,” researchers see tackling poverty across the US as the main way to fix the problem. “In the long term, the only way to end teen food insecurity is to address its root cause – family poverty – by improving access to jobs, providing better access to opportunityrich neighborhoods, and strengthening the safety net when parents cannot earn enough to cover basic needs,” the study concludes. With airstrikes against the terrorists set to continue, Russia has still not received information from the US on the exact locations of Al-Nusra Front militants, said the chief of the Russian Reconciliation Center in Syria, Lieutenant General Vladimir Savchenko. “I want to stress that the fact that the US has still not provided information allowing the identification of the exact operational places of Jebhat al-Nusra in the combat areas is hampering the fruitful joint work on the cessation of hostilities.”

begin to feel the weight of adult responsibilities. But like their parents, teenagers [from low-income communities] have limited jobs available to them within their communities. It’s in these moments of need when some teens make the choice to help their families stock the pantry by earning money outside of the legal economy.” Teens at all the 10 study locations told researchers numerous stories of how they themselves or some of their peers had committed minor crimes such as shoplifting, or more serious offenses such as selling drugs, in order to put food on the table. Many described “selling their body” or “sex for money” as a way to get something to eat. “Often this takes the form of ‘transactional dating,’ meaning a teen regularly sees and has sex with someone, often a significantly older man, in exchange for meals, material goods, or cash,” researchers found. “You’re not even dating,” a girl in Portland, Oregon, is cited by the report as saying. “They’ll be like, ‘I don’t really love him, but I’m going to do what I have to do.’” A boy in rural North Carolina also described the strategy, saying: “When you’re selling your body, it’s
more in disguise. Like if I had sex with you, you have to buy me dinner, tonight… that’s how girls deal with the struggle… That’s better than taking money because if they take money, they will be labeled a prostitute.” The report also cites boys from Los Angeles, who described how middle school girls give out flyers to advertise their sexual services, and a girl from Chicago, who told researchers about an 11-year-old sixth-grader who dropped out of school to work in the sex trade. Senior fellow at the Urban Institute and lead author of the report, Susan Popkin, spoke to the Guardian about the findings. She said it was particularly disturbing that the majority of stories in all focus groups were those of girls swapping sex for goods. “With the boys there was a lot of hustling and shoplifting or maybe stealing a car stereo or something small they could sell. Getting pushed into drug dealing, sometimes getting pulled into gangs […] I find it particularly disturbing that all the kids in almost every focus group were aware about what was happening to the girls – they knew the story about girls dating older guys or being exploited.” “It’s a sexual exploitation. September 14, 2016
To hear it from stably-housed kids in the United States is shocking and even if it’s only a handful of kids, it should be something that we’re paying attention to, that there are kids that desperate,” Popkin told the newspaper. As a less common practice they noted at two of the 10 locations, researchers described cases when teens fail in school or get arrested intentionally, thus ensuring they will have continued access to food at a legal institution. “It might not be the best food, might not be the best place to be, but it’s a roof over your head. And every single day they eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner,” one teenage girl in Portland was cited as saying. Researchers found that what they dubbed as “food insecurity” is widespread across the nation, along with strategies used by teens to tackle it. They claimed that hunger is in many cases the root cause of teen crime and suggested educators and police should be trained to recognize the trauma experienced by teens who suffer from it, as they often hide this problem as they feel ashamed. But apart from a variety of recommendations for

NOTICE OF PETITION TO ADMINISTER ESTATE OF JONELL MCKERNAN CASE NO. INP1600303 To all heirs, beneficiaries, creditors, contingent creditors, and persons who may otherwise be interested in the will or estate, or both of Elisabeth JONELL MCKERNAN. A PETITION FOR PROBATE has been filed by GLENELL LEESER in the Superior Court of California, County of RIVERSIDE. THE PETITION FOR PROBATE requests that Richard GLENELL LEESER be appointed as personal representative to administer the estate of the decedent. THE PETITION requests the decedent’s will and codicils, if any, be admitted to probate. The will and any codicils are available for examination in the file kept by the court. THE PETITION requests authority to administer the estate under the Independent Administration of Estates Act. (This authority will allow the personal representative to take many actions without obtaining court approval. Before taking certain very important actions, however, the personal representative will be required to give notice to interested persons unless they have waived notice or consented to the proposed action.) The independent administration authority will be granted unless an interested person files an objection to the petition and shows good cause why the court should not grant the authority. A HEARING on the petition will be held in this court as follows: September 19, 2016 at 8:45AM in Dept. 1A located at 46-200 Oasis Street, Indio, CA 92201. IF YOU OBJECT to the granting of the petition, you should appear at the hearing and state your objections or file written objections with the court before the hearing. Your appearance may be in person or by your attorney. IF YOU ARE A CREDITOR or a contingent creditor of the decedent, you must file your claim with the court and mail a copy to the personal representative appointed by the court within the later of either (1) four months from the date of first issuance of letters to a general personal representative, as defined in section 58(b) of the California Probate Code, or (2) 60 days from the date of mailing or personal delivery to you of a notice under section 9052 of the California Probate Code. Other California statutes and legal authority may affect your rights as a creditor. You may want to consult with an attorney knowledgeable in California law. YOU MAY EXAMINE the file kept by the court. If you are a person interested in the estate, you may file with the court a Request for Special Notice (form DE-154) of the filing of an inventory and appraisal of estate assets or of any petition or account as provided in Probate Code section 1250. A Request for Special Notice form is available from the court clerk. Attorney for petitioner: ROBERT D. HESS 40024 HARVESTON DRIVE, SUITE 346, TEMECULA, CA 92591 (951) 719-1152 September 7, 9, 14, 2016. DSW16-1260 SUMMONS (CITACION JUDICIAL) ON SECOND AMENDED COMPLAINT CASE NO. PSC 1301518 NOTICE TO DEFENDANT: (Aviso al Demandado): ALL PERSONS UNKNOWN, CLAIMING ANY LEGAL OR EQUITABLE RIGHT, TITLE, ESTATE, LIEN, OR INTEREST IN THE PROPERTY DESCRIBED IN THE COMPLAINT ADVERSE TO PLAINTIFF’S TITLE, OR ANY CLOUD ON PLAINTIFF’S TITLE THERETO. YOU ARE BEING SUED BY PLAINTIFF: (LO ESTA DEMANDANDO EL DEMANDANTE): PATTY L. SCHUYLTZ, AN INDIVIDUAL NOTICE! You have been sued. The court may decide against you without your being heard unless you respond within 30 days. Read the information below. You have 30 CALENDAR DAYS after this summons and legal papers are served on you to file a written response at this court and have a copy served on the plaintiff. A letter or phone call will not protect you. Your written response must be in proper legal form if you want the court to hear your case. There may be a court form that you can use for your response. You can find these court forms and more information at the California Courts Online Self-Help Center (www. courtinfo.ca.gov/selfhelp), your county law library, or the courthouse nearest you. If you cannot pay the filing fee, ask the court clerk for a fee waiver form. If you do not file your response on time, you may lose the case by default, and your wages, money, and property may be taken without further warning from the court. There are other legal requirements. You may want to call an attorney right away. If you do not know an attorney, you may want to call an attorney referral service. Report: Ohioans Living Near Oil Refineries Earn Less
By Desert Star Staff COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio is among the top 10 oilrefining states in the nation, and a new report examines the potential economic impacts of the industry on local communities. The FracTracker Alliance looked at neighborhood prosperity in the census tracts where refineries are located. Great Lakes Program Coordinator for the group, Ted Auch, said they found people living in the shadow of 80 percent of refineries in North America earn about $16,000 less annually than those in surrounding regions. And in Ohio, he notes, it’s $20,000 less. “The take-home message is, poorer communities are being made poorer or being cited as such for this infrastructure and have been for many, many years now, and I’m not saying that’s right or wrong but it’s a fact, and we prove that with this analysis,” he explained. Auch contended the
findings are important to consider given the dozens of proposals associated with the expansion of shale gas development in Ohio. He said the next step is an examination of other quality of life indicators encapsulated in income, such as health and education. While Ohio produces less than one-percent of the nation’s crude oil, production in 2015 doubled to more than 26 million barrels. Auch also noted it’s difficult to assess if oil refineries were constructed in regions already poor, or if lower incomes were a result of the operations. “I don’t know chicken or the egg, but these things being there, they’re not making anything better, that’s for sure,” he added. “That’s from seeing these communities, whether its Canton or Lima and Toledo. The people near the oil refineries in Ohio are making $20,000 less than their neighbors across the state.”
Ohioans living near oil refineries earn about $20,000 less than those in other regions. (Ed Webster/ Flickr) Auch said another impact to monitor down the road is the issue of internally displaced people. He explained just as refugees flee war-torn countries, the rapid expansion of oil and gas infrastructure
could displace people in Ohio and other states. “You’re going to see large chunks of these communities just getting up and leaving because they cannot live next to this infrastructure anymore,” he said. “And what
do we do for those people? What’s the cost benefit of that? Really large questions that I don’t think anyone are really talked about.”

U.S. District Court Judge Ann Aiken will hear oral arguments over the objection. Playwright A.R. Gurney Comedy Resonates At North Coast Rep permission from his father Bradley before he publishes it, and his mother Ann (winningly played by Cristina Soria), and his sister Nina (nicely played by Shana Wride), who when she discovers she’s also a character in her brother’s play takes the sting out of her usual put-down retorts, asking John how many lines she has while thumbing through the script trying to count her scenes and words. Does it have a plot? Bradley keeps asking John, only when John finally says ‘Yes’, then Bradley loses interest in John’s play and begins to chide him by saying you make a perfectly good living as an editor/publisher. Why write plays? Ann, on the other hand keeps asking John to write a book instead of a play. “One gets more lasting pleasure out a book dear” she purrs. During these
family dialogue exchanges, the cocktails have been flowing freely and the inevitable recriminations begin to bubble up to the surface. And we’re off to the races. Filled with crackling dialogue, and witty counter-repostes the audience is in for a delightful evening of watching characters one will swear you know and see every day. Remember, we never see ourselves as others see us. The beauty and enjoyment of this smart comedy ensemble lies in the situations the characters find themselves in along with witty, sharp, and clever dialogue provided by Gurney. Also, plays of this type, flavor, and tone are right in the wheelhouse of Ms. Reynolds. I still remember her gifted direction a couple seasons back of the outstanding production of Sir Noel Coward’s “Fallen Angels”. Once again, North Coast Repertory Theatre (NCRT)
By Desert Star Staff BRISTOL, Pa. – The public comment period on the PennEast Pipeline Draft Environmental Impact Statement closed Monday, and one environmental group has mounted a major challenge to the project. The Delaware Riverkeeper Network has submitted eighty pages of objections to the content and omissions of the draft EIS, prepared by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). Maya van Rossum, the Delaware Riverkeeper, believes the document is so deficient that it violates the National Environmental Policy Act. “It’s got huge data gaps,” she said. “It’s wrong on the information all the way around, either because it’s got misinformation or misleading information, or because it’s missing the information altogether.” The developers of the project say the 115mile, 36-inch diameter underground pipeline would reduce energy costs and
support thousands of jobs. But van Rossum said the pipeline isn’t necessary. She pointed out that both Pennsylvania and New Jersey, where the pipeline would end, already have more natural gas than they need. “It is wholly inappropriate to be destroying our environment, and taking people’s property through the power of eminent domain, so that the PennEast Pipeline Companies can attempt to get a competitive edge over other pipelines,” she added. In the past 30 years, FERC, which is funded by the industries it regulates, has rejected only one of the pipeline projects that have gone before its commissioners for approval. By the end of this year, FERC is expected to reach a decision on the PennEast draft EIS. Van Rossum said the commission could issue a new draft and open a new public comment period, or it could decide to advance the current document as the final environmental

federal lawsuit claiming the commission has a conflict of interest and is biased in favor of the oil and gas industry.
