California ‘Blues’ GOP failed to ax California’s governor By Desert Star Staff According to several media projections, California Governor Gavin Newsom has emerged victorious from

a special recall election, meaning the state executive first elected in 2018 will remain in office after a contentious campaign.

With more than 64% of the votes tallied, Newsom was expected to win Tuesday night’s recall race by a wide margin, according to projections by NBC, CBS, CNN and ABC. Addressing supporters

in Sacramento as the final results rolled in, Newson declared victory, saying he is “humbled and grateful to the millions and millions of Californians who exercised their fundamental right to vote, and express themselves

so overwhelmingly by rejecting the division.” Newsom took office following a 62% landslide win in 2018. Still, a segment of state residents Continues on Page 5

Junior Golf as it Should Be- Fun!

By Richard Rowland It’s never been a better time to be a junior golfer in the desert. The Academy at Indian Wells Golf Resort has some exciting additions making it this fall’s premier junior golf program. Along with the introduction of a new director of instruction, PGA certified professional Eric Solander, they have also added the interactive on-course program and app, Operation 36, and this fall is expanding the junior program to include ages 5 and 6 in what they call the Birdie Basics, making The Academy a sensational place to begin or expand the love of golf. First, a little introduction of what Eric Solander brings to the club. Eric is a lifelong golf enthusiast, who is also a Class A PGA professional, a

level 3 instructor with The First Tee, and also recently was awarded the 2020 PGA Youth Development Award- Desert Chapter. He was also the 2019 IW Pro-Am Champion. His mentors include Bob Veroulis, Phil Rodgers, Ken Venturi, Dr. Craig Farnsworth, Mike Wilson, and many playing professionals. His philosophy as an instructor stresses personal development, fun, and teaching a game that can be enjoyed for life. And speaking of fun, the addition of the national Operation 36 on-course program (for both adults and kids) is an innovative way to take the basic lessons of full swing, short game, rules, and etiquette taught in the program onto the course. If you have not yet heard of it, Operation 36 provides a structured program

while tracking progress and “leveling up” like an interactive game via the mobile app. It encourages players to Go Play

Managing Grief During the Holidays By Desert Star Staff The holidays, as well as birthdays and other celebrations, are often difficult for anyone who has experienced the death of a loved one, particularly during the first year of adjusting to life without them. The holiday season may result in a renewed sense of grief, especially as wellintentioned individuals are encouraging those who are grieving to participate in traditional festivities. While there can be joy in being together with family and friends, the holidays can also bring feelings of sadness, loss and emptiness. For those who find themselves struggling with grief during the holidays and other celebrations, consider these ideas from Remembering a Life, an online resource from the experts at the National Funeral Directors Association. Talk About Grief: Grief isn’t a linear journey. Ignoring pain and emotions won’t

make it go away. Don’t be afraid to talk about grief with others. Confiding in close family and friends can help a grieving person feel heard and understood.

Establish Boundaries During the Holidays: Friends and family may encourage a grieving person to participate in the holiday just as they normally would. While these intentions are typically good, it is important for the bereaved to set boundaries and focus on what they want. While grieving, one should openly and honestly discuss wishes with friends and family and clarify what they are comfortable with and have the emotional bandwidth to do. Acknowledge the Loss: Families can find ways to honor their loved one’s physical absence during holiday celebrations by incorporating their spirit into celebrations and holiday traditions. Examples of this could be decorating ornaments in ways

Photo courtesy of Getty Images that are symbolic of a loved one, cooking their favorite meal or making a memorial donation to a favorite charity. Reflect On and Embrace Fond Memories: Memories of a loved one, both from the holidays and other special times, are an important legacy. Rather than ignoring these

memories, talk about them with family and friends. It’s OK to laugh and it’s OK to cry. One way to facilitate this activity is with Remembering A Life’s Have the Talk of a Lifetime Conversation Cards, which can help families share stories and memories about loved ones and themselves. It can make for a meaningful activity

during holiday gatherings. It is important to remember that even though an individual may be grieving, they can still celebrate and enjoy the holidays. Find support and resources for grief during the holidays and other special times of the year at RememberingALife. com. Family Features

Peloton Moves Further into Apparel Business By Desert Star Staff It’s time to start thinking of Peloton as more than a connected fitness company. After years of collaborations with Nike, Adidas, and Lululemon, it has officially launched its own private label activewear line, simply titled Peloton Apparel. Peloton has been selling branded apparel in limited quantities online since 2014, but the new collection marks its most ambitious foray into the space yet. • Men’s, women’s, and gender-neutral items range from $15 to $118. • Last October, CEO John Foley said Peloton had sold 600,000 units of branded apparel in a single quarter.

• At the time, he also said the company would “surprise people in apparel.” VP of Apparel Jill Foley, John’s spouse, had been hinting at an expanded apparel business for a while now. In late 2020, she spoke about the need to “invest more” in apparel because items were “selling like hotcakes.” Last month, the company posted a net loss of $313.2 million in its fiscal fourth quarter, primarily attributed to the negative impact of treadmill recalls. Peloton still generated $937 million in revenue during Q4, a 54% increase year-over-year, but it was a 25.8% drop from the previous quarter’s $1.3 billion.

This allows individuals to track weight changes due to fluid build-up in the body, a risk for hospitalization. During home visits, Health Navigators also help participants connect to care management nurses, share heart failure management plans and conduct health risk assessments. “The goal is to empower our members to be their healthiest selves,” Anna Edwards, IEHP’s Care Management Clinical Director, said, adding, “We help provide the tools so that members can make informed decisions about their health, reducing the

likelihood of emergencies and the need for hospitalization.” IEHP is one of the top 10 most extensive Medicaid health plans and the largest not-for-profit MedicareMedicaid plan in the nation. It supports more than 1.4 million residents in California’s Riverside and San Bernardino counties enrolled in Medicaid or Cal MediConnect Plans. The heart-friendly meal options from Mom’s Meals contain 800 mg or less of sodium and less than 30 percent fat. They are developed based on nutritional guidelines from the American Heart Association.

Personalized Initiative Offers Healthy Food and Home Visits

By Desert Star Staff Members of Inland Empire Health Plan (IEHP) in California with heart failure will benefit from a recently launched pilot initiative providing healthy food, nutrition education and home visits, among other tools, to boost patient outcomes. Suppose the six-month program proves successful upon its conclusion in March 2022. In that case, it may be extended to additional member populations, according to its sponsors, IEHP and Mom’s Meals, a leading provider of medically tailored,

home-delivered meals. “Providing medically appropriate meals to people with heart failure is feasible and creates positive clinical results, including improvements in both physical and mental health,” said Catherine Macpherson, M.S, R.D., Senior Vice President of Healthcare Strategy and Chief Nutrition Officer for Mom’s Meals. “When individuals with cardiac conditions eat healthy foods over a period of time, it can result in fewer hospitalizations and reduce the overall cost of care.” During the first half of the program, Mom’s Meals

provides three lower-sodium fully prepared meals per day to about 75 individuals. As the second half of the program approaches, Mom’s Meals will begin to offer healthy produce and pantry boxes delivered to the doorsteps of pilot participants. Along with nutrition education by Mom’s Meals’ registered dietitians and healthy recipes, members are supported in learning food preparation aligned with dietary guidelines for heart failure. In addition to healthy food, pilot participants also receive digital weight scales delivered by IEHP’s “Health Navigators.” September 17, 2021

Britain’s Raducanu becomes the first qualifier to win Grand Slam

By Desert Star Staff Emma Raducanu completed one of the most astonishing stories in tennis history as the British teenager captured the US Open title with victory over Canada’s Leylah Fernandez in New York. In an all-teenage final at Flushing Meadows, Raducanu ran out a straight-sets winner 6-4 6-3 to become the first British female Grand Slam singles champion in 44 years. Appearing in just her second Grand Slam, the teenage star also becomes the first qualifier – male or female – to go all the way to the title at a major tournament in the Open Era. Raducanu and Fernandez, 19, had both defied expectations to come this far in New York, having started the tournament unseeded. Fernandez saw off defending champion Naomi Osaka, fifth seed Elina Svitolina and second seed Aryna Sabalenka on her way to a maiden appearance in a major final. Raducanu, meanwhile, had not dropped a single set on her route to Saturday’s

showdown – becoming the first star in the Open Era to emerge from qualifying and set up a shot at a Grand Slam title. The Brit continued that form to boss the final at Arthur Ashe Stadium, also overcoming some late drama as she cut her leg while serving for the match. As Raducanu called a medical time-out, Fernandez appeared angry when the Canadian had a breakpoint and a chance to wrestle back the initiative. Still, the Brit was patched up and went on to save another break point before seeing out the match – and the championship – with an ace. As the records tumbled with her feat in New York, Raducanu also became the youngest Grand Slam queen since Russia’s Maria Sharapova won Wimbledon as a 17-year-old back in 2004. That victory propelled Sharapova to global stardom – as well as a further four Grand Slam titles – and similar might now be expected from Raducanu. Given Raducanu’s rise from an outsider to a Grand Slam queen, many hailed her New York fairytale as

among the most incredible stories that tennis – and perhaps even sport as a whole – has ever witnessed. Raducanu will pocket $2.5 million in prize money for her title win in New York, capping a life-changing few weeks that even she has admitted she did not see coming. The young star, who was born in Canada to a Chinese mother and Romanian father

round the world every year, an estimated 59,000 people die from rabies following a bite or scratch from an infected dog, according to the World Health Organization; almost half of them children under 15 years old. With preventive steps, including vaccination, you can protect your human and canine family members. In large areas of the world, rabies continues to be a serious health issue. Of the estimated 900 million dogs around the world, the majority (75-85%) are not household pets. In the countries where rabies is a continued threat and outbreaks continue, both owned and un-owned dogs may be at risk if they are not receiving rabies vaccinations. Many areas where rabies outbreaks continue have limited access to resources and vaccines, and awareness and education about the disease are often low. Learn more about this preventable disease and how you can stop its spread with these tips from the experts at MSD Animal Health’s Afya Program.

Know What Rabies Is and How It Gets Transmitted

Rabies is a viral zoonotic disease (a disease that can be passed from animals to humans) that causes fatal inflammation of the brain and spinal cord, not only in wild animals but also domestic animals and humans. The rabies virus is transmitted through the saliva of an infected animal, usually through a bite or scratch. In up to 99% of cases, domestic dogs are responsible for human rabies infections. The time it takes to show symptoms of rabies depends on the distance the virus has to travel from the bite site to the brain. If someone gets bitten on a toe, it could take weeks or even months to show symptoms, but if bitten on the face, he or she could become rabid in just a few days. Once symptoms are present, the disease is 100% fatal. Symptoms include anxiety, confusion, partial paralysis, agitation, aggression, hypersalivation, difficulty swallowing, fear of water and, eventually, paralysis, coma and death.

but moved to the UK at the age of two, was taking her A-Level school exams just a few months ago but has now become a national icon in Britain and a heroine far beyond her home country. Raducanu first emerged into the broader national conscience during at Wimbledon in her maiden Grand Slam appearance in the summer, but on that

occasion was forced to retire from her fourth-round match due to breathing problems. Some in the media – including US tennis icon John McEnroe and UK TV personality Piers Morgan – appeared to question Raducanu’s resilience due to her withdrawal. Still, she has bounced back in a style that few would have expected.

5 tips to protect you and your dogs

Use Caution with Unfamiliar Dogs Generally, it’s best to avoid approaching unfamiliar dogs. This is especially true of dogs that are sleeping, eating or caring for puppies, as they may be startled or protective if they sense a threat. If you encounter a dog you do not know, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention cautions against running and screaming, and instead suggests avoiding direct eye contact and remaining motionless. Watch for warning behaviors from the dog such as growling, snapping, showing teeth, raised hair on its back, ears back and rigid posture.

Ensure Your Dogs are Vaccinated Through vaccination of dogs, rabies is 100% preventable. You can do your part by ensuring your dog stays current on its rabies vaccination, which is administered by a veterinarian in either one-year or three-year doses.

Get Prompt Medical Attention

If someone has been bitten or scratched by a suspected rabid dog and may have been exposed to rabies, a vaccination can be part of the treatment. However, it’s important to immediately wash the wound for 15 minutes with soap and running water. This can help remove and inactivate any virus which may have been inoculated. The post-exposure vaccination course will depend on your prior vaccination history, so you’ll need to consult your doctor or visit the emergency room for immediate medical care.

Jeff Bezos, Jay-Z Among Potential Broncos Suitors

By Desert Star Staff NFL sources expect the Denver Broncos to hit the

market in 2022 after what the team says will be an “orderly determination of ownership”

— setting the stage for possibly the biggest franchise sale in U.S. sports history.

Pat Bowlen, who purchased the Broncos for $78 million in 1984, died in June 2019, exposing a struggle for the future of the franchise among some of his seven daughters, including a lawsuit brought by two of them that was dismissed in July. While the team is currently not for sale and Bowlen’s descendants could keep it in the family, sources tell Front Office Sports the family’s differences, combined with the purchase price — expected to be around $4 billion — will likely lead to a sale. Sources tell FOS that two names keep popping up as potential new owners: • Amazon founder Jeff Bezos: A rep for the world’s richest man previously held

talks for a 40% stake in the Washington Football Team. A source with knowledge of the situation told FOS that Bezos remains interested in NFL ownership. • Rapper-turnedmogul Jay-Z: Hip-hop’s first billionaire would need partners to purchase the Broncos. Forbes estimated his net worth at around $1.4 billion after the sale of champagne brand Armand de Brignac — he owned 50% when it was acquired by LVMH for $650 million in March. Sports attorney Richard Roth said there will be no shortage of suitors because NFL ownership is “definitely a status symbol” for the super-rich and because of how quickly franchises can significantly increase in value.

5 Tips for a Stress-Free Morning

By Desert Star Staff Mornings are often the most important part of the day – they can make or break your mood and set the tone for all of your to-dos. To help combat the hecticness that can arrive when the sun comes up, consider these five tips for a stress-free start to the day. Fine-tune your fashion at night. Whether you are focused on getting yourself out the door or have kids who need to get to school, planning what to wear the night before can help save time. When the clock is ticking and you have somewhere to be, the fear of a missing shoe or misplaced accessory can throw everything off. Express gratitude. Take a few moments after rising to jot down or be mindful of a few things you are grateful for, no matter how big or small. Starting the day in a positive state of mind can lift your

mood and provide residual benefits throughout the day.

Organize what leaves with you. Designate a place where everyone can stash the things they need to take when they leave the house – whether it’s a backpack, purse, briefcase or gym bag. When you return home at night, empty used or unneeded items and replace them so you can grab and go in the morning. Boost your breakfast routine. While cereal or toast are easy standbys, certain days call for a more savory breakfast. Skip dirtying dishes at home and snag Wendy’s onthe-go. Breakfast becomes a breeze with craveable breakfast sandwiches like the Sausage, Egg & Swiss Croissant or Bacon, Egg & Swiss Croissant, both made with fresh-cracked eggs and housed on warm, flaky croissants. For caffeine lovers, grab a hot coffee made with 100% Arabica beans,

cold brew coffee steeped for 12 hours or a one-of-a-kind Frosty-ccino – cold brew coffee topped with Frosty creamer – for that extra kick to jump start your day. See the complete breakfast lineup at Wendys. com or on its mobile app. Avoid distractions.

If you’re like many people, reaching for your phone is the first thing you do after opening your eyes. However, this trap can get you sucked into emails, scrolling through your newsfeed or falling into a social media rabbit hole, which devours precious time. Force yourself to leave your phone and other

similar distractions out of your morning routine to get out the door more efficiently. No one wants to start the day in chaos. Simple time management and planning can help make hectic mornings more enjoyable and productive. Family Features

SpaceX launches Inspiration4 from Florida

By Desert Star Staff SpaceX’s Inspiration4 mission has been launched from Florida’s Kennedy Space Center. The mission is the world’s first all-civilian journey into orbit and will see four “amateur astronauts” circle the Earth for three days. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same Lender may hold more than one mortgage or Deed of Trust on the property. Notice to Property Owner The sale date shown on this Notice of Sale may be postponed one or more times by the Mortgagee, Beneficiary, Trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. 5 Tips to Safely Celebrate Halloween with Your Pets

By Desert Star Staff Whether heading to a party, celebrating on social media, or greeting little ghouls and goblins at home, getting the entire family including the four-legged family members - involved in the Halloween festivities can be the biggest treat of all. However, it’s important to take some precautions to avoid spooking your pets, particularly if you’ll be dressing them for the occasion. In addition to keeping your pets out of the candy bowl and tempering their excitement during all the hustle and bustle, keep these tips from PetSmart’s resident veterinarian and pet care expert, Dr. Jennifer Freeman, DVM, in mind to ensure your pets are comfortable in their costumes, so they’re able to celebrate stress-free. Take baby steps. Start by trying a simple accessory, like a bandana, on your pets. See if they allow this, and I will walk around with it on for

a few minutes. Not all pets like wearing clothes, and some may become stressed or agitated while wearing a costume. However, many just need a little coaxing and positive reinforcement, such as praise and a treat. Reward with something tasty. After putting the apparel or costume on your pets, reward them with their favorite treat to create a positive association between wearing the outfit and getting pleasure. Ensure the costume is safe. Once you know your pets are comfortable in a costume, it’s important to ensure the outfit allows them to walk, bark, meow and see without difficulty. Additionally, if your pets can easily trip over their legs, try another type of clothing. Finally, make sure there aren’t any accessories attached that may be easy for them to chew on or swallow. Consider the weather. Pets can overheat quickly, so ensure their clothing is not too bulky or heavy if it is warm on

communicate through body language, and their behavior may let you know if they’re stressed or uncomfortable. So pay extra attention to your costumed pets’ body language while attending parties or events and watch for signs of discomfort such as pacing,

hiding, or refusing to move. For more tips and tricks for keeping your pets safe this Halloween, as well as ideas for seasonal costumes, toys, and treats, visit PetSmart. com. Family Features

Wealthy Americans, Businesspeople Petition Congress for Higher Taxes

By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- CARSON CITY, Nev. -- It is not every day people ask

for higher taxes, but that’s the gist of a letter just sent to Congress, signed by more than 200 wealthy taxpayers

and business owners. A coalition of progressive groups organized the public letter, which calls on

lawmakers to raise taxes on rich people and corporations to fund the new infrastructure proposal, details of which were released this week. Robert Bacon, an attorney from Oakland, said he signed the letter to encourage Congress to make some significant investments. “I’d be willing to pay more in taxes to increase the quality of public education and public transportation, to catch up with deferred maintenance of our public infrastructure,” Bacon stated. The letter asks Congress to reverse some 2017 Trumpera tax cuts by setting the top marginal tax rate back to where it was four years ago, at 39.6%. Supporters would also like to raise the corporate tax rate from 21% to 26%, close loopholes on estate taxes, and tax capital

gains as ordinary income. President of the nonprofit Voices for Progress, Sandra Fluke, said the money would help fund President Joe Biden’s $3.5 trillion infrastructure package, known as Build Back Better. “Child-care affordability, home- and communitybased care, and paid leave, fighting climate change and protecting all of us from natural disasters are good investments,” Fluke asserted. “Investments that will help to rebuild our economy and to strengthen our democracy.” The letter also calls on Congress to restore full funding to the IRS, which has lost one-third of its employees in enforcement roles in recent years, resulting in close to a 60% drop in the number of audits it performs.

Americorps’ First LGBTQ+ Mentoring Program Helps Central Valley Teens

By Suzanne Potter/PNS FRESNO, Calif. -AmeriCorps has teamed up with the nonprofit Equality California to offer a groundbreaking mentorship program for LGBTQ+ teens in the state. The Equality California Mentorship Corps has deployed 20 trained mentors to reach out to students at ten middleand high schools in Fresno. Brittney Yang, who serves as a mentor, said the program works like Big Brothers/Big Sisters. “The end goal of this program is to let them really dive into their own identities,

while also preparing them to become leaders by the end of the year,” Yang explained. The mentors and students work through a curriculum designed to help kids develop self-confidence, manage stress, identify role models and plan for their future by setting personal, academic and career goals. Students can be referred by teachers or counselors, or can sign up on their own. Chris Negri, program manager for Equality California, said a 2019 study by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation and the University of Connecticut found half of

all LGBTQ+ identifying teens in California reported being teased or bullied, and a quarter have been threatened with physical violence at least once because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. “There’s a ton of evidence that kids who are LGBT face higher rates of bullying and harassment,” Negri observed. “And so that has repercussions throughout their lives in higher rates of depression, suicide, higher dropout rates.” The program began in 2020, with 52 kids receiving mentoring sessions online. With school returning to inSeptember 17, 2021
