Golf Tournament with players from the military, local firefighters, law enforcement, and first responders. Story and Photo by Pat Krause The Westin Mission Hills Golf Resort and Spa proudly presented the second annual Desert Patriot Golf Tournament and banquet. Over 136 golfers participated in this year’s event. The teams of golfers were each represented by a player from the military, local firefighter, law enforcement, or first responders. The event was sold

out over 2 weeks in advance. The event was sold out last year in its initial year with mostly local golfers and Marines from 29 Palms Marine base. This year the event was extended to reach golfers and military men, firefighters, first responders and law enforcement from all over southern CA. Patriotic men and women were eager to play in

this golf tournament to show their support for the men and women for their service. The event benefited the Folds of Honor Foundation. The Folds of Honor Foundation provides scholarships and assistance to children and spouses of service members and women who were killed or disabled in the service to America. The Foundation raised

Story and Photo by Pat Krause Fantasy Resort Casino Spa brought Julio Iglesias to the stage at the Special Events Center on Sept. 17th. Julio became a big name in the 70s and 80s. He continued to make fans all over the world. He has many awards and accolades with records of attendance in Japan and all over Europe. His music and voice are as they were when he became famous. I do not speak Spanish, but his singing is like a love song to each and every person. The soulful sound of his voice is like a serenade to a lover. He still oozes

sexiness when he sings. He uses his hand like he always does holding it over his stomach and heart as he sings. The first three songs were in Spanish, and then he sang a few in English. His birthday is Sept. 23rd, so he sang Happy Birthday and the audience sang with him. He would joke with the audience in between numbers. There was a large band accompanying Julio and 3 very beautiful dancers and backup singers who would dance and sway to the music. There was a Sax solo that was awesome. Julio asked if there were people from Mexico in attendance and then asked

if there were people from America. He professed a love of Mexico and its music. When he sings it’s like sending his love to the audience. Fans wore Julio Iglesias T-shirts to honor him and one man even brought a Julio Iglesias painting, hoping to get it signed. Deceased artist, Vincent King, did the painting on the 70s. The audience would clap and yell when he sang a favorite song of which there were many. Fantasy Springs Casino has many famous artists coming soon. Robin Thicke, Alice Cooper, Il Divo, Culture Club and Ringo Starr to name just a few.

over 4,000 dollars last year, and they beat that amount by raising 5,000 dollars. Awards were handed out at the banquet after golf. Prizes were awarded to the top three golf teams, longest drive and closest to the pin. There was also a large raffle drawing with prizes that ranged over $100 each. Rick Vaughn organized the event. The

Westin Mission Hill Golf Resort provided the golf course and banquet. Guests were treated to Hamburgers, Sausages, beans, salads, and deserts. Everyone was looking forward to playing again next year and to raise even more money for Folds of Honor Foundation and its mission of help.

By Pat Krause The Morongo Casino Resort held a Business Symposium with the very famous Gene Simmons, cofounder and lead singer for KISS. The event let fans meet the legend and iconic rocker and get his latest book; ME inc.. Tickets were very inexpensive where guests not only got the new book, but also got to meet this extraordinary man and get his book autographed by him in person. Morongo Casino holds many events and concerts during the year and is a short drive from the Valley. I was not expecting the speech he gave, which was on getting rich and how to do it. Gene spoke of many ways to get more money by simple

methods that have worked for him like business cards and stock purchases. He started his speech by telling the guests that he emigrated to this country when he was only 8 1/2 years old and could not speak a word of English. He said he worked so many odd and not fun jobs as a child, cleaning up chicken heads and delivering newspapers. He said he went to college and paid for it himself. He said his mother was a survivor of the concentration camps in Germany. His mother told him that everyday was a good day when he was aboveground. He said that if you have two legs, two arms and a good body, you had more than a lot of others. Gene said that if you come to a country, you need

to learn the language and speak it correctly. He has traveled across the world and can speak many languages fluently. He said he taught 6th grade in Spanish Harlem after college. This was when he said he met some friends, and that they should put together a band and wear the most makeup and the highest heels. In a short time, they were on top of the music rock and roll world ahead of many bands that had been around for years. He spoke about his success in the business world and has worked very hard to become wealthy and still does. I was amazed at the many businesses he owns and runs. He said you should always find what you like and go for it. He has many restaurants, and

he doesn’t know how to cook. He has written many songs and does not know how to write or read music. He constantly is looking for better ways to make money and find new things to do. He is not one to sit and watch TV but says work is very important. He said it is impossible to fail in America, and anything is possible if you work for it. He spent over two hours autographing books for fans and talked to every single fan. He never rushed them away but took time to listen. I asked if he just loved people to take that amount of time with them, and he said he felt so blessed. Gene said people open up with questions, and he tries to help. This is his way of giving back for all his success.

I got to interview him for a few minutes before his speech. I asked if he liked all the tribute bands that copy him and other artists. Gene said they have to get his permission, but that he finds it a great way to keep the fans happy, and he likes the idea. I asked him why he was involved with the Starkey Hearing Gala, and he said it was only because he wants to help wherever he can. I was totally impressed with this multi talented man who is so much more than just a rock and roll legend. His resume is filled as author, songwriter, singer, restaurant owner, TV personality, Film and record producer, star in many TV ads.

Why Obamacare is Costly and Rising

By Janice Gough On March 21, 2010, The Affordable Care Act was passed. As a Health Broker, I saw it as the biggest taxation transfer to the middle class ever. If you like your health care, you’re going to pay more for it, a lot more. If you’ve got a typical family of four prepare to shell out some serious cash. Unfortunately, the experts working for Medicare’s actuary have reported that in its first 10 years, Obamacare will boost health spending by roughly $621 Billion above the amounts Americans would

have spent without this law. In August healthcare costs recorded their biggest gain in 32-1/2 years. Economists link the increase to the expansion of the Obamacare law. Plan premiums are rising in the exchanges due to a large majority of those who are covered by the State exchange have pre-existing conditions, which has significantly boosted costs for all, Exchange enrollees are already sicker than their counterparts outside the government insurance portals. The exchange pool fills prescriptions for the sorts of specialty drugs associated with chronic disease at a rate that’s 47 percent higher, than for those outside the exchange. If employers dump their sickest employees into the exchanges, that number could go spiral even further upward. Employer-provided health insurance may not be long for this world. It is estimated that 90 percent of American workers who receive health insurance from large companies will instead get coverage through Obamacare’s exchanges by 2020. Employers are mandated to provide coverage with 50 or more fulltime employees or pay a fine of $2,000 per employee. The law’s many mandates, fees, and taxes will increase health costs for large employers

to the point that providing health benefits at work is financially unsustainable. Obamacare doesn’t just tax employers directly, it’s many coverage mandates also raise the cost of benefits indirectly. Large employers also have to pay a Temporary Reinsurance Fee to help “stabilize” premiums in the individual insurance market. The president promised that Obamacare would provide all Americans access to affordable health coverage, however, he failed to mention that it would squeeze nearly $200 billion out of large employers and potentially destroy the employer insurance marketplace altogether in order to do so. Over the next seven years, Obamacare could cost large employers $151 billion to $186 billion, equating to approximately $5,500 per employee more each year. Employers will likely pass along these costs to their workers, where 80 percent of employers are considering raising deductibles, or have already done so. Eventually, large employers may opt to pay the fine for not providing health insurance and leave their workers to get coverage in the exchanges. Doing so might even save them money. Firms could also continue furnishing insurance to most of their workers, but nudge their costliest ones onto

the exchanges by making the company insurance plan unattractive to them. A company could shrink its network of doctors, raise co-payments, or even offer a chronically ill employee a raise to opt out of the employer plan. In so doing, the company would save money. The employee would be able to secure better coverage through the exchange. And if a raise covered the cost of the exchange policy, both parties would benefit. However by adding even more high-cost individuals to the exchanges could force insurers to hike premiums. Higher premiums require greater taxpayer subsidies. The congressional Budget estimate the federal

government will spend $1.03 trillion on exchange subsidies by 2024. Who pays that bill, we all do! A fearful thought is that the government, as payor, for half of the health care delivered in this country, will have a significant incentive to twist the findings of such research so that older, cheaper therapies seem just as effective as more expensive, cutting-edge ones. What They Aren’t Telling You About Mold – Part 2 By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. [Part 2 of a series] You cannot clean up mold on your own. Many mold consultants treat mold as if it were asbestos. Asbestos is truly dangerous. Unlike mold, if it is inhaled into the lungs, the body cannot absorb it or break it down. But mold consultants typically develop repair protocols which are virtually identical to asbestos protocols. Several trade organizations have created mold credentials and cleanup protocols. On the other hand, the EPA’s recommendation to clean up a moldy area of up to 9 square feet is to wipe it with a cloth dampened with a diluted bleach solution. The EPA and California Department of Public Health always recommend mold consultants. They do not. In fact, minor mold situations, they say, can be handled by the resident or with janitorial staff. Mold consultants are licensed. Mold inspectors or consultants are not licensed

by the government, but instead hold credentials and memberships in trade organizations. Mold cannot be caused by the resident. Mold accumulation can often be caused or worsened by a failing to properly ventilate a residence. Mold can build up in stuffy bathrooms or any area where the environment is humid, warm and poorly ventilated. Before the mold scare started in 2000, with the new term “toxic mold,” people would occasionally see black mold in shower or bath enclosures and would simply wipe it off with a cleaning solution. Insurance never covers mold. Partially true: Property insurance policies do not normally cover mold, fungus or dry rot. If a water damage incident occurs, and the damage is not discovered and ventilated soon, mold can result (and dry rot). The property insurance will normally refuse to cover the cost of mold remediation, but will still typically cover the rest of the repairs. However, if the property owner is sued because of water damage September 21, 2016

including mold, the liability part of the policy ordinarily will defend the claim. Let the emergency contractor do everything. Because of the panic associated with mold, the normal reaction is to call emergency services contractors. Such contractors are much more expensive, because of their readiness to respond almost immediately at any hour. Stopping water leakage and drying the space might require an emergency contractor. However, sometimes a plumber might be enough. Emergency contractors sometimes destroy walls and cabinets before the association can obtain a second opinion as to its necessity. Allow demolition only of what is immediately necessary, and then seek bids for the non-emergency work. Keep demolishing walls until you find no mold. Panicked residents often ask a landlord or HOA to open walls to look for mold. However, this is almost always a waste of money. If it is inside the wall, it is probably not bothering or affecting anyone – so opening

up the wall may waste money (and possibly release more mold into the air). Mold damage situations must cost at least $10,000 per occurrence. The cost of repairing water damage skyrockets due to unnecessary mold tests, unnecessary consultants, delay in responding to the leakage (the most common cause of mold buildup), excessive demolition, searching for mold, and using emergency contractors for everything, and foregoing competitive bids for repairs. Be more deliberate, and save money. For more information on mold, visit www.epa. gov, www.cdc.gov/mold or www.cdph.ca.gov. Kelly G. Military Expert Visits Nevada, Links National Security to Climate Change

By Desert Star Staff LAS VEGAS – A nationally recognized expert on military affairs is speaking to veterans and policymakers this week across Nevada about the link between climate change and national security. Retired Vice Admiral Lee F. Gunn is the former inspector general for the Navy and vice chairman of the military advisory board for the Center for Naval Analyses, which is a federally funded military think tank. Today, he’ll be in Reno and Carson City, and tomorrow he goes to Las Vegas, to drive home the point that the military, and the country at large, needs to take climate change seriously. “The military advisory board concluded that climate change was real and that it would affect the demands on

the U.S. military, the way the military had to fight, and the bases from which the military needed to train, operate and deploy,” he explained. Gunn said some military bases already are threatened by rising sea levels, and warns that climate change will cause major instability, extremism, and refugee flows across the world as fresh water becomes scarce and slashes food production. By Desert Star Staff MEMPHIS, Tenn. – If commercial aviation was considered a country, it would rank seventh in the world for carbon emissions, according to the Center for Biological Diversity. And with the help of $2.4 million, Memphis International Airport will take steps to reducing emissions from its high volume of air traffic. Specifically, the airport will install energy-efficient ground power units and preconditioned air units as an alternative to idling aircraft. Memphis International Airport CEO Scott Brockman explained, “It offers us a chance to put in newer technology, newer programs while reducing our emissions

and even if you’re not in an area that is considered a challenge from a standpoint of air quality it’s still a good idea to be a good environmental neighbor.” According to the EPA, U.S. aircraft are responsible for almost 30 percent of greenhouse gas emissions from all aircraft globally. Knoxville and Chattanooga are also eligible for the Voluntary Airport Low Emission Program, run by the Federal Aviation Administration. Brockman said programs like this one make it possible for airports to utilize technology to reduce their carbon footprint. “It supports areas where we can remove or reduce

of the Interior signed the Desert Renewable Energy Conservation Plan last week, which covers 11 million

acres of federal land. It set aside 600 square miles for energy development zones, while protecting habitat for such species as the bighorn sheep, desert tortoise and Mohave ground squirrel. Kim Delfino, California program director with Defenders of Wildlife, said that during phase two, counties will identify private lands that are considered “low conflict” and thus more suitable for renewable energy development. “The idea is that the more degraded lands will have a role to play in hopefully being where projects will get built,” Delfino said. “And the more intact desert lands - which actually have a climate benefit because it sequesters carbon - those will remain intact.” Private lands are often closer to transmission lines and population centers where energy is needed. Los

Angeles, Inyo and Imperial counties have already started their land planning processes. The focus will now move to the west Mojave Desert that stretches across San Bernardino and Kern Counties. Erica Brand, California Energy Program director at The Nature Conservancy, said her group has done multiple analyses to identify the best locations for renewable energy, and found that most are on private land. She praised the state and county land planners and wildlife managers who are working on phase two of the Desert Renewable Energy Conservation Plan. “California is leading by example and showing the world that we can have a strong clean-energy economy while protecting nature,” Brand said. Phase two of the plan is expected to take several years to complete.

3 Tips for Keeping Your Kids Drug-Free this School Year

By Desert Star Staff All parents want to feel confident that their children are happy, healthy and focused on the future. The unfortunate reality is that drug use can derail these goals and put a strain on families. Parents can do a lot to curtail their child’s risk. Here are three tips to help keep kids drug-free this school year and beyond. 1. Get kids active in extracurricular activities. Adolescents aged 12 to 17 who participate in extracurricular activities are less likely to use alcohol, cigarettes and illicit drugs, according to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH). Many extracurricular activities are known to have positive effects on students’ grades, attention span and behavior. Afterschool activities will keep kids engaged in

something positive while they are outside the classroom and also provide an incentive for staying healthy. If your school lacks a particular activity in which your child expresses interest, investigate offerings at local community centers. 2. Open the lines of communication. The importance of communicating with your child can’t be overstated. A regular, open dialogue will make children more likely to talk to you about peer pressure and stress—the kinds of factors that can lead to drug use. You can foster communication by regularly sitting down to dinner as a family and checking in on homework and school projects. Encourage children to invite friends over, so you know more about others with whom they spend their time. 3. Test your child. If you suspect your child

By Desert Star Staff At school, kids are exposed to an influx of germs that can cause a number of preventable sicknesses, including cold and flu. The top germiest school-based culprits include water fountains, plastic reusable cafeteria trays, keyboards, toilets and…students’ hands. To keep your family free from the sniffles all year long, here are five easy-to-follow tips to ensure a healthy, happy and absent-free school year. 1. Teach Kids to Wash Hands the Right Way. It seems simple enough, but research shows that only 5 percent of people wash their hands properly. The CDC recommends following five simple steps: wet, lather, scrub (for at least 20 seconds), rinse and dry. Don’t forget backs of

hands, between fingers and under the nails. Handwashing is the best defense against germs, but if soap and water aren’t available, hand sanitizer is a good alternative. 2. Sanitize School Supplies. Sanitize school supplies, lunch boxes, bottoms of backpacks, etc., weekly. These items are exposed to a variety of germs lurking in places like gym lockers, on desks and in bathrooms. Use disinfecting wipes on plastic objects, and throw items like lunch boxes and backpacks in the washing machine. Send kids to school with disposable wipes so they can clean surfaces like desks, cafeteria trays and other surfaces throughout the day. 3. Set a Sleep Schedule. A regular bedtime and an alert morning go hand-

is experimenting with drugs, there are tools that can help you find out for certain in the privacy of your own home. Seventy-five percent of high school students have used addictive substances, according to CASAColumbia. Additional research by NSDUH showed that 1.8

million adolescents had used marijuana in the past month since the time of the study. Home drug testing kits are readily available at your local pharmacy so you can get answers quickly and confidentially. For example, First Check home drug tests detect up to 12 of the

most commonly abused drugs in five minutes with over 99 percent accuracy. Testing tips and resources for parents can be found at firstcheckfamily.com. Be proactive. You have the power to help kids make healthy choices this school year and beyond. StatePoint

in-hand. The National Sleep Foundation recommends a calming nighttime routine like reading a book or taking a bath to signal the brain that it’s bedtime, and leave technology like tablets, laptops and cell phones out of the bedroom. If you’re wondering how much sleep your child needs each night, it’s recommended that toddlers receive 11 to 14 hours, preschoolers 10 to 13 hours, school-aged children nine to 11 hours, and teenagers eight to 10 hours. 4. Keep Healthy Snacks and Meals on Hand. A healthy, balanced diet has been proven to keep kids mentally sharp and focused, but fast-paced schedules

during the school year can sometimes result in quickfix, and often unhealthy, food choices. Keep nutritious graband-go snacks like trail mix and fruit at the ready. And don’t skip breakfast. It can mean decreased cognitive performance in areas like alertness, attention, memory and problem solving. 5. Nurse Kids Back to Health. Germs are lurking everywhere -- school, preschool and daycare, so be prepared if sickness does strike. Tools like TempTraq come in handy for unexpected fevers, giving parents peace of mind and children the rest they need

to get better. This wearable, Bluetooth temperature monitor continuously senses, records and transmits body temperature for up to 24-hours. It can even send alerts to your smartphone via its free mobile app to notify you immediately if your child’s fever reaches an unsafe level. Visit Target or CVS to stock your medicine cabinet with this useful must-have, or order online at TempTraq.com. From hectic schedules to germ-ridden classrooms, the stress and environment of school can take a toll on kids’ health. Keep them healthier with a few simple strategies and you’ll be headed to a perfect attendance record. Statepoint

Crowded House, released in 1986, saw the band instantly launch onto the global stage with lead vocalist and mastermind Neil Finn, bassist Nick Seymour and drummer Paul Hester premiering timeless hits including “Don’t Dream It’s Over,” “World Where You Live” and “Something So Strong.” 1988’s Temple Of Low Men drew critical acclaim and platinum awards with Finn crafting a set of intense and personal songs revealing his true mastery of melody – highlights including “When You Come,” “I Feel Possessed” and the defining “Better Be Home Soon.” The band’s third studio album Woodface in 1991 spawned a remarkable European following with their first UK Top 10 and hit singles “Weather With You,” “Fall At Your Feet,” “It’s Only Natural” and “Chocolate Cake.” With 1993’s follow up Together Alone, Finn’s shining pop song-craft joined forces

After the bands breakup in 1996 and subsequent reunion in 2007, the bands fifth studio album Time On Earth followed. 2010’s Intriguer is the sixth and latest studio record from the band ionizing the commercial and artistic longevity of the group with Finn’s durable song-craft shining across highlights “Saturday Sun” and “Falling Dove.” Key 1999 compilation album Afterglow features a selection of rarities and outtakes recorded between 1985 and 1994 including “I Love You Dawn” and “Recurring Dream.” It is rightly regarded as an essential album in the catalogue and rounds out the campaign.

Hooch “American Hero Dog

A Courageous Canine Who Survived Terrible Ordeal And Now Spends Life Helping Others Wins Top Title Of Injured for use as a bait dog, “Hooch helps abused and special-needs children

By Desert Star Staff LOS ANGELES, -Following nearly a million votes by the American public and the opinions of an expert panel of celebrity animal lovers and dog experts, Hooch, a three-year-old French Mastiff from Tehachapi, California, has been named this year’s most courageous canine, beating 173 other heroic hounds and capturing the top title of “American Hero Dog at the 2016 American Humane Hero Dog AwardsŽ. The sixth annual Hero Dogs Awards is presented by the Lois Pope LIFE Foundation, Inc. and will be broadcast nationally on Hallmark Channel October 28 at 8 pm ET/ PT, 7 pm Central Time. Hooch is a dog with badly cropped ears, a broken tail, and a bright spirit. Zach Skow, of Marley’s Mutts Dog Rescue, learned about him from a shelter in Bakersfield, which told him Hooch would not eat or drink, instead thrashing his food and water bowls around “like a maniac. He was 35 pounds underweight, starving and dehydrated, and they thought that a broken or dislocated jaw was causing his behavior. But when he was taken to the vet and sedated for x-raying, a gruesome discovery was made: Hooch’s tongue had been savagely removed at its base, likely in an attempt to prime him for the role of a bait dog. Hooch kept removing his feeding tube, but fortunately took well to being hand-fed, tilting his head back while food was placed in the back of his throat, and letting gravity do the work. Despite the terrible injuries inflicted on him by people, Hooch is a heroic example of bravery, overcoming, and forgiveness. He now works with Marley’s Mutts’ Miracle Mutts division serving as a therapy dog for abused, autistic, and special needs children, helping them with great gentleness, patience and kindness. For his extraordinary bravery and good works, Hooch won the American Humane Hero Dog Awards’ “Emerging Hero Dog category for ordinary dogs who do extraordinary things. This year, the Emerging Hero Dog category is sponsored by Merial, maker of NexGardŽ (afoxolaner) Chewables. Thank you to them for helping draw attention to Hooch’s story and spotlighting the remarkable ways dogs can and do help us even when they themselves were in need of help and healing. Katharine McPhee provided the lead musical performances, including a tribute to previous American Humane Hero Dogs who have crossed the rainbow bridge with a rendition of “Over the Rainbow that brought the audience to tears. A special memorial was also held in honor of last year’s winner, Harley, a tiny, one-eyed Chihuahua who fought to bring attention to the issue of puppy mills. Before the show, the audience was treated to the artistry of The Alex Donner Band. American Idol star and recording artist Stefano Langone sang the national anthem. The Hero Dog Awards were created to celebrate the powerful relationship between dogs and people and recognize extraordinary acts of heroism performed by ordinary dogs. The event will be broadcast nationwide by Hallmark Channel on October 28 at 8 pm ET/PT, 7 pm Central. The program

TAURUS A new level of courage is offered so you can begin to take little risks along the way. In order to bring forth the new realities it’s good to call forth confidence in yourself that what you see and feel are correct and are actual directions as to your next step in life. You must learn a bit more about working as a team with care and cooperation. Sharing too.

GEMINI Home and work in the world are both activated by Virgo and the Pisces lunar eclipse. Both need a new level of attention for both are changing. Security, your own and for others, becomes a significant focus along with finances and resources, sexuality and spirituality. They are all different levels of resources in your life. Begin with making yourself secure and comfortable. Then move onto others in need. Perhaps they are another kingdom (animal, plant, mineral). Ponder upon what intimacy means to you. It’s time to begin a new creative endeavor (again).

VIRGO You may be called to act with courage and confidence concerning how you identify yourself. Events may occur that who you thought were your friends may actually turn out not to be. What this means is a new journey has begun for you as old ways begin to pass away. It’s good to assess your wardrobe. As we change internally our appearance in the world must change too.

LIBRA Inner spiritual resources will come to your aid when you feel lost or at sea without direction. Prayer helps, storming heaven does too. Much of what you have relied upon, even desires, fall away. You’ve built up strong inner resources over the years. Though it seems as if answers are covered by a mist, persevere in your prayers of asking and the veils will fall away.

SCORPIO There may have been expectations that didn’t quite work out as planned or hoped for. There are people, friends, hopes, wishes and dreams hovering about in the airs around you. Who and/ or what are they? Be sure to communicate with those who love and support you. Soon new challenges will come your way. That’s the way for Scorpio. It’s always something… reorienting, transforming, dying, shifting or being born.

SAGITTARIUS Something happened during the retrograde that was unusual. You were called out to be a different persona, to uphold a new reality, to assume a different task in the world. You undertook this with bravado and a sense of theatre. But underneath a deep spiritual value came forth. This experience will hold you to something new in the future. As the clouds clear, and the

mists part, you will understand.

CAPRICORN So many things felt uncertain, cloudy, misty the past weeks. Things in form and matter, got lost, laid in the sun, fell apart. There was disappointment, perhaps. Now life turns around again, falls into place. New plans are made, new encouragement and enthusiasm. Hands are steadier, ideas able to be turned into action. New opportunities await. They’re all around you. Choose all of them. You laugh.

AQUARIUS You’re learning how well you can provide for yourself. You’re recognizing your creative efforts keep you well protected and cared for. I have written many time that Aquarians are the ones who come from the future. So they know the future. Rather like an “unthought known.” And therefore all they experience prepares others who watch them for that future, for the times to come. You are valuable. You are our forerunner.

haunting, funny and sweetly romantic throughout. The music is still memorable. “Try to Remember” talks about a time when “dreams were kept beside your pillow” and the song “Metaphor” declares that “Love is better far than a metaphor could ever, ever be.” And for humor, there is the clever “Plant a Radish,” as the parents of the two young lovers talk about life, gardening and raising children who are “bewildering.” As the story begins, we meet Matt (Conor Guzman) and Luisa (Ashley Park) who are neighbors. However, their two fathers have built a wall between their two houses to keep the youngsters apart because they know that if their kids knew they approve of their romance, they will cease loving one another. This bit of wisdom is detailed in the very clever duet:”Never Say No” sung by the two dads (Regi

Davis and Gedde Watanabe). To be certain that their children will marry, the two crafty fathers also hire El Gallo to stage an abduction so that Matt will have to fight for Luisa and prove his love. To aid in the abduction El Gallo enlists the services of two actors played by Hal Lindon (TV’s “Barney Miller”) and Amir Talai. What is so charming about ”The Fantasticks” is the magical way this tale of love and loss is told. Spetses: The Grandest of Greek Isles

By Anthony Grant The images this summer were almost too painful to bear: Paris Hilton gliding down a Mykonos byway while posing for other peoples’ selfies, Lindsay Lohan sparring with her paramour on a Mykonian beach…would you really want to travel all the way to Greece for those off-red carpet shenanigans? I don’t think so. But once you move past the stereotypes of glitzy Greek islands like

that other overcrowded princess, Santorini, you realize there is more to the Grecian archipelago than meets the eye. Indeed, there are fantastic island escapes within a two-hour ferry ride from Piraeus port. Spetses may hold the title of poshest of the Saronic islands—Garbo was here in the ‘60s and super yachts are a fixture in its gentle aquamarine waters—but the little island holds a vaunted

place in the modern Greek consciousness because of its prominent role in the Greek War of Independence, something feted every September when during the Armata Festival a replica Turkish ship is ritually blown up in the old harbor (as opposed to the newer one where the yachts are). Other than that the isle exudes a decidedly more carefree vibe, its gentle pine-clad slopes giving way to countless

secluded coves with beaches where there’s fine sunbathing and swimming to be had right through October. With the exception of a few taxis, there are no cars here, so the way to get around is by horse and buggy or by foot—at any rate the distances are short and walking around the seaside lanes of the little port town is a pleasure. I can’t find her name in the guest register but my bet is that when Greta Garbo stopped in Spetses in 1966 she might have stayed somewhere as legendary as herself: the Poseidonion Grand Hotel, facing the old harbor (www.poseidonion. com). It arrived on the scene in 1914 with its distinctive cupola modeled after the look of legendary hotels of the French Riviera such as the Negresco and Carlton, and was in fact one of the first luxury hotels Greece. Almost instantly a magnet for European and Hollywood royalty, a full renovation was completed in 2009 and the hotel is still the backdrop for key events and happenings in the social life of Spetses. One of which, of course, is eating. Everywhere I went in Spetses the food was fantastic but things got downright Dionysian on the veranda of the Poseidonion Grand. Indeed, On the Verandah is the name of the hotel’s gourmet restaurant, where chef Stamatis Marmarinos oversees a menu of deftly deconstructed Greek Mediterranean dishes. It shares the same sweeping Saronic Gulf views as the more casual Library Brasserie, and both use ingredients from the hotel’s organic farm up in the island’s hills. With just 52 rooms and suites, the Poseidonion preserves not just a sense of history but a breezy boutique hotel flavor too that suits the island of Spetses especially well. After a day of beachside lazing or exploring, it’s the ideal anchor to come back to and unwind. The levels of service, almost always above

par in Greece today, are here on a higher level. How high? When the sad moment comes to board your twohour ferry ride back to Athens, your luggage will almost magically appear on the quay where the boat comes in: you don’t have to lift a finger and you don’t even have to ask. Speaking of boats, remember that in the Saronic Gulf you are firmly within the orbit of Athens, meaning distances are small enough to make excursions to other islands eminently doable. I highly recommend taking the 30-minute ferry ride to Hydra, which has as spectacular a harbor entrance as any you’ll find in the Aegean. This summer Kate Moss was seen walking the narrow streets, and found herself for a few moments in the same historic pharmacy as did Jackie Kennedy some decades prior. We’re talking atmosphere! Three nights is the minimum you should stay in Spetses—to be sure, there is culture to take in, such as the museum dedicated to Greek naval commander Laskarina Bouboulina (there’s a statue of her in front of the hotel), but you also need time to slow down and take in the sea air and views. The pace will pick up naturally enough once you’re back in Athens and where I have two hotel picks. The first is the Stratos Vassilikos, a good, no-nonsense business hotel located away from the tourist fray and close to the American Embassy (visit http://www. airotel.gr/en). The second is more for the urban adventurer: called Kerameion, it consists of one large ground floor studio room and one upstairs two-bedroom apartment. Both spaces are contemporary in design and the studio has a view onto some meticulously preserved ancient ruins. The location is Psirri, a very lively quarter of Athens that’s still a manageable walk to the Plaka and Acropolis.

Fabulous August Wilson production on stage at Mark Taper Forum By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic The great playwright August Wilson has been the voice and mirror for many African-Americans over the years. Where fiery writer James Baldwin who was extremely articulate but angry and rightly so, railed at the injustices experienced by many AfricanAmericans, Wilson just quietly and brilliantly opened a window to the everyday existence of black life and its community for all to see and appreciate. In the long run, it was the smarter approach toward solving a 400 year-old shameful period in America’s history. And there’s plenty of work still to be done. ‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’ now on the boards of the Mark Taper Forum is fabulously acted and brilliantly staged by Tony winner Phylicia Rashad. It was first of Wilson’s plays to be produced on Broadway (in 1984) and was most responsible for making Wilson’s ‘10-play Pittsburgh Cycle’ of African-American life become a reality. Ms. Rashad has also acted in Wilson’s play “Gem of the Ocean”

back in 2003, playing the 287 year-old old family matriarch Aunt Ester (Wilson’s favorite character) on the stage of the Mark Taper Forum. Now as the director of ‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’, Ms. Rashad has corralled a cast of actors who graced her last production at the Taper, ‘Joe Turner’s Come and Gone’. Back for acting encores is the wonderful Tony winning singer/actor Lillias White, as Gertrude Ma Rainey. It’s a bawdy but telling performance of what it meant to be a black recording artist in 1927 Chicago. Her entrance alone is worth the price of admission. As showy as the role of Ma is, it’s the musicians that back her performance, that get to play the meaty parts and shine in the process. Actors Keith David playing, pot-smoking Slow Drag, the band’s string Bass musician and Glynn Turman portraying Toledo, the pianoplaying band philosopher, are spot-on as Chicago style recording session musicians. The performance of Jason Dirden as the swaggering, cocky, trumpet player Levee, comes dangerously close to stealing the show from

L-R: Jason Dirden, Glynn Turman, Damon Gupton, Keith David and Lillias White in August Wilson’s “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. Photo by Craig Schwartz what the audience sees is a superb ensemble cast. His flash and moves are so in the moment, it’s a joy to watch a pro work his magic. Damon Gupton as Cutler, the trombone playing band leader that Levee takes pleasure in needling, is a steadying influence on the group, who also deals with Ma’s agent Irvin portrayed by a harried and nervous Ed Swidey. Also in the ensemble is a sexy, stunning looking ‘girl toy’ of Ma’s, played by Nija Okoro, who immediately catches the eye of smoothtalking, confident Levee who

has plans of a quick conquest. Rounding out this stellar ensemble is Matthew Henerson as Sturdyvant, the cost-conscious record and studio producer, Lamar Richardson as Sylvester, Ma’s speech-challenged stuttering nephew whom she promised could introduce her on the recording, and Greg Bryan as the Policeman. Director Rashad leads a creative team headed by Scenic Designer John Iacovelli, who created that wonderful set in Rashad’s production of ‘Joe Turner’s Come and Gone’, at the Taper in 2013. Lighting

Designer Elizabeth provides a balanced design that serves the two-level acting area, and delivers just the right amount of light to see the costumes designed by Emilio Sosa. The sound Design is by Dan Moses Schreier, with Hair and Wig Designs by Carol F. Doran. The Fight Director is Steve Rankin. The Music Direction, Arrangements and additional music is under the baton of Steven Bargonetti. ‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’ is a must see, splendid production that performs at the Mark Taper Forum and runs through October 16, 2016.

By Jackie Devereaux (JOSHUA TREE, CA) – If you didn’t get tickets to Desert Trip, no problem. There’s another music festival happening nearby that’s more affordable and filled with really great world music, artwork, yoga and some very eclectic fans. It’s the 11TH Annual Fall Joshua Tree Music Festival (JTMF) held Oct. 6 – 9 in the

By Lisa Respers France and Brian Stelter One of Hollywood’s highest profile marriages is over. Angelina Jolie has filed for divorce from husband Brad Pitt, citing irreconcilable differences. According to the court documents, the pair separated on September 15, two years and one month after they married in August 2014. Jolie is seeking physical custody of their six children and asking the court to grant Pitt visitation. She is also asking to keep “miscellaneous jewelry and other personal effects” as well as any earnings from after the date of their separation and other separate assets to be determined later. Already there is speculation that a tabloidfriendly, child-unfriendly custody battle may ensue over their six children. But a source close to them asserted that both sides want a cordial breakup. “Other than the fame of the people involved, this is like so many other divorces,” the source said. “Angelina will always do what’s in the best interest to protect her children,” Geyer Kosinski, Jolie’s manager, told E! News in statement Tuesday.

“She appreciates everyone’s understanding of their need for privacy at this time.” While Pitt and Jolie married in 2014, their relationship became the subject of speculation in 2004, when they co-starred in “Mr. & Mrs. Smith.” At the time, Pitt was married to actress Jennifer Aniston. In January 2005, Pitt and Aniston announced they were splitting and Aniston filed for divorce a few months later. In April 2005, photos surfaced of Pitt, Jolie and her adopted son Maddox in Kenya. Jolie later adopted daughter Zahara from Ethiopia and in early 2006 she announced that she and Pitt were expecting a baby. Shortly thereafter, Pitt was granted the right to legally adopt Maddox and Zahara. Their daughter Shiloh was born in May 2006 and son Pax was adopted from Vietnam in March 2007. Jolie gave birth to twins Vivienne and Knox in July 2008. The couple announced their engagement in 2012. Pitt was there to support Jolie in 2013 when she underwent a preventive double mastectomy. Jolie said at the time that she underwent the surgery following the discovery she

carried a mutation of the BRCA1 gene which greatly increased her risk for cancer “My doctors estimated that I had an 87 percent risk of breast cancer and a 50 percent risk of ovarian cancer, although the risk is different in the case of each woman,” Jolie wrote in an article for the New York Times. “Once I knew that this was my reality, I decided to be proactive and to minimize the risk as much I could. I made a decision to have a preventive double mastectomy.” In 2014 they were married in a small, private ceremony in a chapel at Château Miraval in the village of Correns. The following year, Jolie once again made headlines for her health when she had her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed to guard against cancer. The couple talked to NBC’s Tom Brokaw in 2015 about their marriage, her health struggles and working together as they promoted their film “By the Sea.” Jolie also wrote and directed the film about a couple in a troubled marriage. Jolie said the characters’ relationship was far from hers and Pitt’s. “I’m counting on the audience to know that if it was close to us at all we

Oregon Sees One of Biggest Drops in Childhood Poverty By Desert Star Staff PORTLAND, Ore. Childhood poverty has decreased significantly in Oregon since its peak in 2011, according to new data released by the Annie E. Casey Foundation. In the wake of the Great Recession, the child poverty rate in the Beaver State grew to 24 percent. Since then, data shows the rate has come down to 20 percent, one of the biggest drops in the country. The Executive director of Children First for Oregon, Tonia Hunt, said many working-class families still are recovering from the Great Recession in 2008.

“What happened in that recession with the hollowing out of that middle-class job market, we don’t really know when it will come back or how it will come back, but at least we’re making some progress,” she said. Nationally, the child poverty rate decreased from its peak of 23 percent in 2011 to 21 percent in 2015. Although rates dropped among all children, AfricanAmerican and Latino children are still three times more likely to live in poverty. Hunt said children pay when they aren’t given equal opportunities in things like education, leading to perpetual cycles of injustice. “It’s important we do

everything we can to really take a hard look at those systemic barriers, the longstanding injustices of opportunity for our kids, and address those in an active and intentional way,” she added. Hunt said Oregon’s working families could use a relief from the rising cost of living in the state. “So the more we can do to support families and their housing costs, support low-income working families in their child-care costs to make sure that their work allows a minimum quality of life for them and their children,” she explained.

By Desert Star Staff The wage gap between black and white workers in the US has increased significantly since 1979, all while productivity has gone up by nearly 63 percent overall, according to a new report. Racial wage discrimination, racial disparities in “unobserved or unmeasured skills,” overall rising unemployment, weakened labor unions, and insignificant minimumwage increases have led to a widening of the blackwhite wage gap over the last 30 years, according to the Economic Policy Institute (EPI). In 2015, black men made 22 percent less, and black women made 34.2 percent less, in average hourly wages compared to white men with the same education, work experience, region of residence, and metro status, the EPI found, while black women made 11.7 percent less than white women with the same characteristics. In 1979, black men and women who shared the same characteristics

as their white peers made 16.9 percent less and 4.5 percent less, respectively. Overall average hourly wage gaps have widened as well. Black men’s average hourly wages had fallen to 31 percent lower than those of white men by 2015, compared to 22.2 percent lower in 1979. Black women’s average hourly wages had decreased to 19 percent lower than white women in 2015, as opposed to 6 percent lower in 1979. The EPI began its analysis with 1979 wage data given that’s when US wage growth began to diverge from productivity growth. “People should be troubled and really question why we would observe this pattern through 2015,” said Valerie Wilson, director of EPI’s Program on Race, Ethnicity and the Economy and co-author of the report, according to the Huffington Post. “Is the American dream really obtainable ― equally obtainable for all people?” Though the racial wage

gap has grown over the last 36 years, it has not increased every single year since 1979. From 1996 to 2000, the adjusted black-white wage gap fell from 23 percent to 20 percent for men and 10 percent to 7 percent for women. Sustained decreases in the adjusted wage gap have not occurred since 2000. Wage-growth inequality is also stark among the top 5 percent of income recipients and everyone else, the report says. Since 1979, wages have been near-stagnant for most American workers compared with overall rising productivity while the top 5 percent have seen more increases in wage growth as productivity has risen. This also impacts black-white disparities. “One of the reasons that the average black-white wage gap has continued to expand is the fact that very few African Americans earn wages that place them among the top 5 percent of all wage earners, where most growth has been concentrated,” EPI reported.

“Only 3 percent of all chief executives are African American, and a disproportionate number of them are employed in the public or private nonprofit sectors, where salaries are lower and more likely to be capped than they are in the private for-profit sector.” Younger black women, or those with 10 years of experience or less, have lost the most ground compared to their white peers since 2000. This category of black women earned 4.1 percent less than young white women in 2000; in 2015, that gap has grown to 10.8 percent less. The adjusted male blackwhite wage gap has also increased based on experience and education levels. In 1979, the new-entrant wage gap was 11.2 percent, compared to 18.7 percent in 2015. Experienced black men, meanwhile, had a 19.5 percent disadvantage in 1979, then a 23.5 percent gap in 2015. Black men have been particularly disadvantaged by

declining unionization in the US. Since 1983, when data on union membership by race became available, the blackwhite wage gap has increased by 1.6 percent among male entrants and 3 percent among experienced male workers. One-fourth to one-fifth of this growth can be attributed to unionization decline, EPI said, regardless of experience. “The fingerprints of several policy decisions and business practices, including eroded labor standards, weakened labor market institutions, and excessive executive pay growth, can be found in the history of wage growth in the past generation,” EPI wrote in the report. “The disconnect between wage and productivity growth means that the majority of workers have reaped few of the economic rewards they helped to produce over the last 36 years because most of the benefits have gone to those at the very top of the wage scale.”

By Desert Star Staff INDIANAPOLIS – From 80,000 to 100,000 inmates currently are segregated in prison cells nationwide for 22 to 24 hours a day, and many of them have mental illnesses that begin with isolation, or they have symptoms that are heightened because of it. A report put out this month by Amplifying Voices of People with Disabilities (AVID) found that prisoners with mental illnesses are routinely separated from everyone else. Dawn Adams, the executive director if Indiana Disability Rights, said there’s a lack of understanding about people who are mentally ill, and often what they do is

mistaken for bad behavior. “Someone with serious mental illness may be acting a certain way, sometimes just end up in prison and they’re usually people that have very low incomes if any income at all,” she explained. Adam said that means they can’t afford legal help. Her group and the ACLU recently won a court case against the Indiana Department of Corrections, alleging that mentally ill inmates were being kept isolated in harsh conditions. The court found that the department’s practices violated Eighth Amendment prohibitions against cruel and unusual punishment.

Melissa Keyes, legal director of Indiana Disability Rights, said since then there have been several improvements made. “The Department of Corrections has established several treatment centers within prisons to kind of help inmates with severe mental illness get more treatment,” she said. “Indiana’s Department of Corrections has done a lot to try and address the problems of mental illness in prisons.” The report suggests ways to address the problem in the nation’s prisons, including more funding and data collection, better monitoring of inmates, and

giving prisoners a place to turn for help while locked up. Adams said there also needs to be more help for inmates once they’re released from custody. “Even if they get the treatment in prison and you let them go and there’s nobody out on the other side

to help them get through that process, then they’re just going to wind up back in the prison system,” she added. The AVID project was developed by Disability Rights Washington and is now collaboration among advocacy groups in 23 states, including Indiana.

MUSIC Women in the spotlight on new releases, reissues BY ROBERT KINSLER

Dolly Parton’s #1 album “Pure & Simple” is one of a number of strong artistic returns featuring the voices of female artists whose voices and unique artistry are featured across musthear titles available now.

Barrel deluxe version includes two bonus tracks (versions of Parton’s hits “Jolene” and “9 To 5” recorded live at the 2014 Glastonbury Festival); the unique collection also includes a 48-page ZinePak magazine filled with photos and interviews with the artist. Information: DollyParton.com.

Artist: Dolly Parton Title: Pure & Simple (Sony Music Entertainment) You might like if you enjoy: Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris Tell me more: At 70, Dolly Parton has long been an icon as well known for her theme park, movie roles, Dollywood Foundation-related philanthropy and distinctive brand as for her music. But the Tennessee native’s new album “Pure & Simple” rightly puts the focus back on Parton, who wrote every song on the disc. On the lead-off title track, Parton display’s her sweet soprano is fully intact and able to deliver romantic lines with tenderness and artful dexterity. “Outside Your Door” finds the singer exploring the more visceral thrill of love, her voice again up to the challenge. “Pure & Simple” is likely Parton’s strongest album in years, with the singer setting her romance-minded tales amidst smart arrangements varying from sparse acoustic settings to piano and fiddle-anchored soundscapes. Artist: Michelle Mangione Title: Ponies (Michelle Mangione) You might like if you enjoy: Grace Slick, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Grace Potter Tell me more: Michelle Mangione’s new album “Ponies” is a wonderful achievement, and not just because it’s an independent release. The Southern California-based singersongwriter/multi-instrumentalist has a knack for blending a number of musical styles in the service of insightful songs that are crafted via dynamic and melodic songcraft “Jolie” blends folk rock and powerpop via a bouncy 12-string guitar-driven song that is in tune with summertime. Her original “Ride” is a beautiful and sonically-fitting Americanastyled tribute to the late Levon Helm; “The Edge of Madness” (a song Mangione co-penned with legendary Jefferson Airplane singer-songwriter Grace Slick) captures the sounds of New Orleans with a tapestry of drums, fiddle,

Artist: Mary Chapin Carpenter Title: The Things That We Are Made Of (Lambent Light Records) You might like if you enjoy: Shawn Colvin, Rosanne Cash, Emmylou Harris Tell me more: Middle age is explored with depth, warmth and honesty across Mary Chapin Carpenter’s stunning “The Things That We Are Made Of.” Once known as a country music hit maker, Carpenter has increasingly joined the ranks of Emmylou Harris and Rosanne Cash as an artist who uses her voice in the service of songs that resonate deeply via explorations of the deepest reaches of the human experience. Carpenter has written all 11 songs on “The Things That We Are Made Of,” and each conveys a wealth of emotional riches. Beautiful and telling titles abound here; “The Middle Ages,” “What Does It Mean to Travel,” “Map of My Heart” and “Deep Deep Down Heart” are among the many treasures on this astounding collection. Artists: Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt Title: The Complete Trio Collection (Rhino) You might like if you enjoy: Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt Tell me more: When it comes to super groups, few have attained the majestic heights that were reached when country music singers Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt joined forces to record “Trio” (1987) and an equally-compelling follow-up disc “Trio II” (1999). The three-disc set includes “Trio I,” “Trio II” and a bonus disc of 20 rare and previouslyunreleased tracks. The bonus material is especially exciting, ranging from an alternate take of the tender “Wildflowers” recorded in 1986, the bewitching country ballad “Waltz Across Texas Tonight” (tracked in 1994) and an unreleased 1994 recording of the spiritual “Softly and Tenderly.” Everywhere the beautiful and distinctive voices of Parton, Harris and Ronstadt shine, whether taking solo turns or joining in the most lovely of harmonies. By Desert Star Staff Rancho Mirage, CA—The Coachella Valley Repertory Theatre (CVRep) has announced that stage, screen and television performer, Adrienne Barbeau will be the special guest artist at their October 13th Luminary Luncheon at 12:00 noon (doors open at 11:30). This is their first time hosting a Luminary Luncheon at the Agua Caliente Casino and CVRep is excited to announce that the event will be held on the main floor in The Show. Everyone knows Ms. Barbeau as Maude’s liberal daughter, Carol, from the TV Series of the same name. Maude ran for six successful

seasons and Ms. Barbeau was one of the most important characters. Adrienne’s first job was as a Go-Go dancer for the Mob and what followed is a career that has been all over the map. Besides stage, film, television, talk show host, radio show book reviewer, nightclub star, concert stage performer, Ms. Barbeau also does voice-over work in animation, video games and books on tape. She has appeared in many Films including Argo, as Alan Arkin’s ex-wife. Adrienne played Berthe, Pippin’s grandmother, in the National Tour of Pippin, a high-flying, death-defying hit musical full of extraordinary

acrobatics. She is also famous for her varied portrayals in the horror film genre. We can all remember how fun it was to watch her in Swamp Thing, Creepshow and The Fog. Also a renowned author, Ms. Barbeau states, “All my life I’ve been a performer – an actress, a singer, a dancer, even a talk show host – but never in the wildest dreams of my first 50 years did I ever imagine I would write something that other people would read. I still can’t quite get over it.” This special luncheon, which is open to the public, is part of CVRep’s series of Luminary Luncheons and will be held on Thursday, October 13th at the Agua Caliente Casino

Resort, 32250 Bob Hope Drive, Rancho Mirage. The luncheon begins at noon with the doors opening at 11:30AM and will be followed by an Actors Studio–style interview with Ms. Barbeau, conducted

Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin, Frank Zappa Tell me more: “Farewell Aldebaran” is among the most eclectic and genredefying albums recorded in the anything-goes 1960s. The fact that Judy Henske & Jerry Yester’s “Farewell Aldebaran” mixed folk, rock, psychedelia, baroque and jazz pop, theatrical-styled songs and more didn’t likely help the 1969 release, which seemed destined to languish forever in obscurity. But a new reissue of “Farewell Aldebaran” remastered from the original master tracks is a must-have for discerning music fans. Like the Zombies’ now-classic “Odessey and Oracle,” “Farewell Aldebaran” is an exciting and intoxicating listen. The art damage rocker “Snowblind,” sweeping “Three Ravens” and country-bending “Raider” are just a few of the joyful discoveries here. In addition to the original 10-song album, the new Omnivore Recordings reissue includes five previously unissued bonus tracks. The physical CD version includes a fullcolor 20-page booklet packed with liner notes, lyrics and photos. A new LP pressing on starburst vinyl with gatefold jacket and eight-page booklet is also available. Information: omnivorerecordings.com

NYC bombing suspect’s father told police son was a terrorist in 2014

By Desert Star Staff Mohammed Rahami, father of Ahmad Khan Rahami, who is suspected of planting bombs in New York and New Jersey, alerted police of his son in 2014 after Ahmad had stabbed another of his sons amid an argument, the New York Times reported. Mohammed Rahami told NYT that he spoke with FBI agents about the stabbing, noting that he had concerns about Ahmad, which led to a review by the agency, according to federal officials. The FBI opened an assessment of Ahmad Rahami, leading to an interview with Mohammed Rahami, who then recanted concerns over his son’s potential for violence. An anonymous official told NYT that the elder Rahami made the comments about his son to the FBI out of anger. “Two years ago I go to the FBI because my son was doing really bad, OK?” Mohammed Rahami said, according to NYT. “But they check almost two months,

they say, ‘He’s OK, he’s clean, he’s not a terrorist.’ I say OK.” “Now they say he is a terrorist,” he added. “I say OK.” Ahmed Rahami is accused of planting bombs in lower Manhattan and at Seaside Park, New Jersey. The blast on Saturday evening in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan injured 29 people. He is also linked to the Sunday evening blast at a Elizabeth, New Jersey, train station. The FBI declined to disclose the nature of the connection, citing an ongoing investigation. Rahami, a naturalized American citizen, has thus far been charged with five accounts of attempted murder and is being held on $5.2 million bail. Before last weekend, Ahmed Rahami was not on any terror watch lists or terrorism databases, according to reports. He studied criminal justice at Middlesex Community College in New Jersey between 2010 and 2012, but never graduated, the school told NBC. After that, he worked

full-time at First American Fried Chicken, a restaurant in Elizabeth owned by his father. Investigations into Ahmed Rahami currently center around whether he had assistance in building the bombs and if anyone else had knowledge of his activities, as well as a had handful of trips he made to Pakistan from 2010 to 2014, NYT reported. Authorities said while they do not believe he is linked to a terror cell in the US, he is still being investigated for link to a broader terror network. A notebook believed to be Ahmed Rahami’s was recovered at the scene of his shootout with police on Monday in Linden, New Jersey. The book was covered in blood with a bullet hole through it, the NYT reported. It contained passages describing sympathies to radical Islamic causes, a law enforcement official said. In another section, there was praise for Anwar AlAwlaki, an Yemeni-American cleric who was considered a leading propagandist for Al-Qaeda before he was

killed by a US drone strike in Yemen in 2011. Awlaki has been cited as an inspiration for other mass shooters, including Syed Rizwan Farook of the December 2015 San Bernardino shooting, Orlando nightclub shooter Omar Mateen, and the Tsarnaev brothers, who

set bombs near the Boston Marathon finish line in 2013. Ahmed Rahami was arrested for the 2014 assault, spending three months in jail, according to a law enforcement official. But a grand jury did not indict him, possibly related to the allegedly recanted allegations.

Oliver Stone talks ‘Snowden’ movie

By Desert Star Staff Despite Edward Snowden’s notoriety, rarely mentioned is how he became one of the biggest whistleblowers in US history. “Snowden” director Oliver Stone offers insight into who the former NSA contractor is, as well as what to expect in the age of cyberwarfare. The Academy Awardwinning director researched his film “Snowden” by meeting with the best source: Snowden himself. “I had the opportunity to visit Snowden in Moscow, I was invited by his lawyer and I got to know him,” Stone told the Press in an exclusive interview. “Over the course of nine different trips and two years, my co-writer and I got a lot of inside information as to what happened,” he said. “Which makes it a very compelling story, and at the same time an exciting one, because it’s going on, in a sense, right now in this world.” Indeed, the debate over Snowden continues to rage in Congress, where the House Intelligence Committee recently wrote a letter to President Barack Obama, urging him not to pardon the exiled whistleblower. Meanwhile, numerous human rights groups have joined in a campaign to put pressure on the Obama administration in

favor of pardoning Snowden. “One of the most surprising things is his relationship, his human relationship to his girlfriend,” Stone said, “which was never mentioned really by the press. It was marginalized by them in a tough way.” Understanding what Snowden gave up is necessary to seeing how grave the issue was to him, according to Stone. “It’s important to realize that he had a love in his life and he had a relationship to somebody who mattered to him,” Stone said. “Keeping that relationship was crucial but he had to sacrifice it for this story that he wanted to get out to the world.” “Certainly it shows why he did it, his motivation,” Stone said. “He’s one of the few people who spoke up. There’s only three, four, five people have spoken up about the NSA. They’ve all gotten into some degree of trouble, so this is a very secret government issue.” “He’s had a lot of guts,” Stone said of Snowden. “One can never predict the outcome of revealing secrets.” The problems facing the US are not limited to the surveillance state that Snowden exposed in the NSA leak, however. According to Stone, “It’s also the cyberwarfare state.” “As far as I’m concerned,

the cyberwarfare that’s going on in the world, we’re jumping to conclusions without the basis of fact,” he said. “People are saying stupid things.” He explained that the desire of the US to blame the Democratic National Committee email hacks on Russia is not likely motivated by facts, due to the timeline of events. “Cyberwarfare, from what I’ve learned from the Snowden movie, takes a lot of time to figure out who did what to who – sometimes months.” The problem is “no one has patience in this crazy cycle. It’s easier to point to the enemy as the instigator.”

So if he doesn’t believe Russia is behind the leak, then who does he suspect? “Consider the nature of the leak was about misbehavior at the DNC, which four major officials resigned for that reason,” Stone said, noting that much of the media overlooked the revelations that there was internal bias during the presidential primary against Senator Bernie Sanders’ campaign. “Some people have mentioned the possibility that it was an insider. Yes, that makes sense.”

By Desert Star Staff LOS ANGELES, -California Governor Jerry Brown today signed into law Senate Bill 1383, the Short-Lived Climate Pollutants bill, which aims to reduce emissions of potent greenhouse gasses. SB 1383 requires the California Air Resources Board (CARB) to develop a plan and implement strategies to cut super pollutant emissions, with specific targets to reduce methane and fluorinated gases (fgases) by 40 percent, and black carbon by 50 percent by 2030. It also requires state agencies to adopt policies and incentives to significantly increase the sustainable production and use of renewable gas. The bill requires the Public Utilities Commission to work with the CARB and the Department of Food and Agriculture to direct gas corporations to implement at least five dairy bio-methane pilot projects that connect to the gas pipeline system in the next two years. SB 1383 is considered the most aggressive law to tackle short-lived climate pollutants in the nation. SoCalGas issued the following statement commending the Governor for signing the bill: “SoCalGas commends SB 1383’s sponsor Senator Ricardo Lara (D-33) and

Governor Brown for bringing California this bold legislation that will help drive innovation and develop the market for renewable natural gas. “Investments in natural gas have already helped clean our air and slow climate change in many ways, through natural gas vehicles, buses and new energy-efficient technologies. Because commercial transportation is by far California’s largest source of air pollution, SoCalGas’ natural gas vehicle (NGV) program is reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 750,000 tons a year and NOx emissions by 1,600 tons each year. “Using renewable natural gas is the next step in addressing climate issues. SB 1383 will increase the amount

of natural gas we use from renewable sources. Ninety-four percent of methane emissions in California come from waste streams, like landfills and dairy farms. This wasted methane can be harnessed so that instead of contributing to climate change it can instead be distributed through our existing natural gas pipeline infrastructure to fuel heavyduty trucks, heat homes, cook meals, or generate electricity as renewable energy. “California could produce almost 300 billion cubic feet of renewable gas per year just from organic waste. Instead of sending that waste to landfills or burning it, it could be used to generate enough renewable electricity to power two-tothree million homes. In fact,

studies show that existing organic waste alone could supply more than 15 percent of our current natural gas demand if converted to methane. “As the largest gas distributor in the nation, SoCalGas is positioned to make the infrastructure investments necessary to maximize the production and use of renewable natural gas. We are eager to partner with critical California industries like dairies, landfills, and others to develop the biomethane pilot programs this law requires, help build the market for renewable natural gas, and continue helping to reduce black carbon emissions through our natural gas vehicle program.” Source: PR Newswire

Re-Imagined Arthur Miller’s ‘View From The Bridge’ is obscured

Overshown, Thomas Jay Ryan and Dave Register in the Young Vic production of “A View From the Bridge.” Photo: Photo by Jan Versweyveld By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Arthur Miller is one of America’s greatest playwrights. Ivo Van Hove is a fine Dutch-born, Belgium-based, talented, Tony Award-winning European stage director. This being an election year, and politics continually being compared to theatre, I guess it’s okay for me to compare and harken back to the 1988 vice-presidential debate where vice-presidential candidate Dan Quayle was comparing his years in Congress to President Kennedy’s years in the Congress. During their debate Senator Benson uttered his scathing remark heard round the world, where at one point in their debate Benson paused and then leaned in. “Senator”, Benson glared at a nervous Quayle, saying “I served (in the military) with Jack Kennedy. You are no Jack Kennedy.” Hove, is an auteur director with formidable stage credentials. Fresh from his 2015 Olivier Awards London success, which transferred to New York in 2016, winning Tony Awards for Best Revival and Best Director. The production of Miller’s “A View from the Bridge” has transferred once again, this time to Los Angeles and has landed on the stage of the Ahmanson‘s 2000- seat house. Miller’s 1957 version (he wrote two versions) is a small, intimate but powerful story of Eddie Carbone, a New York dock worker/longshoreman/ stevedore, who scratches out a hard scrabble existence in Red Hook, a working class neighborhood in Brooklyn. The challenge of Von Hove’s reimagined, sparse, characterchallenged story is what informs the production, forcing textural changes to be visually updated in its execution to 21st century sensibilities and society. Gone is the naturalistic original set design (which probably needed updating to complement the tone of a slightly altered story from the one Miller wrote back in the 50s). The new design is awash in glass and floor lighting www.desertstarweekly.com

instruments. No onstage seats, props or furniture. The actor’s either stand or sit on the floor and one gets a feel and the look of a sterile ER hospital waiting room without seats. The actors are working within a box-like rectangular performing area with some audience members seated on stage on opposite sides as if watching a football game with the focus forced into a brightly glowing boxing ring like set. The rest of the audience is seated all over the 2000-seat theatre. Any nuanced gestures or facial expressions taking place on stage by the first rate cast is an act of faith on the part of the audience. As it’s staged in the round we’re always going to have actors, at times, speaking with their backs to the audience. The Mark Taper Forum, perhaps, would have been a better choice for a play that takes place in one room. But scheduling plays is not one of my strong suits or my job. The production as envisioned by auteur Van Hove is an actor’s wish come true. It’s all about them (as it should). Eddie Carbone, according to Miller’s stage notes, is a husky, slightly overweight, working class longshoreman. Van Hove’s Eddie is a trim, slightly built, Frederick Weller, an award-winning stage actor who, on opening night didn’t look husky or slightly overweight to me. It’s tough to intimidate as a character when called for by the text when the actor doesn’t have the ‘right look’. The fallback position usually devolves into a lot out shouting to validate the alpha male status. The story in short, tells the almost Greek-like tragic story of Eddie Carbone (Frederick Weller), his wife Beatrice (Andrus Nichols), and her seventeen year-old niece Catherine (Catherine Combs), the orphaned child of her sister who has been raised from a child in the Carbone household. Their lives are turned topsy-turvy by the arrival of two male relatives of Beatrice from Sicily. Marco, a taciturn, quiet, illegal immigrant strongly played by Alex Esola and Rodolpho, also an illegal, a young, handsome, blonde

Italian nicely portrayed by Dave Register, who is naturally drawn to the young and vivacious Catherine, wholesomely and innocently played by Catherine Combs, that sets Eddie on edge arousing his jealousy and sets in motion the events that lead to a dark and tragic end. If only Beatrice could make Eddie understand his misguided and dangerous emotions concerning Catherine… but she keeps these thoughts to herself. Helping the audience understand the story threads and how they intersect and a weave a tapestry that contains, jealousy, lust, misguided

L-R: Alex Esola and Frederick Weller affection, rage and manslaughter is the narrator/Greek chorus-like character of Alfieri, a worldweary neighborhood lawyer who has seen it all before and knows the ending of the Carbone family story based on the path it’s taking before they do. It’s a key character part and is capably handled by Thomas Jay Ryan. One aspect of Mr. Van Hove’s direction that puzzles me, however, is why do all of all of the characters perform their roles barefoot; including lawyer Alfieri who picks up his shoes and takes them with him whenever he moves to a different part of the stage setting them down next to him?

What part do bare feet play in a longshoreman’s home, including the newly arrived illegal immigrants? All I can think of is that someone must have a foot fetish in this production. Mr. Van Hove’s creative team have been with him since London and New York. The Scenic and Lighting design is by Van Hove longtime collaborator Jan Versweyveld, as is Costume designer An D’Huys. Sound design is by Tom Gibbons, and the Associate Director is Jeff James. “A View from the Bridge” performs at the Ahmanson Theatre through October 16, 2016.
