“These owlets and the cub are small in stature but big in popularity with our guests,” said Allen Monroe, President/CEO of The Living Desert. “We are excited that the Babies in Bloom keep coming here at The Living Desert. It’s been a wonderful spring and summer.”

allows Burrowing Owls to be exceptionally adept at hunting.

They are one of the few species of owls that hunt during the day and have an incredibly varied diet. Burrowing Owls are only about 10 inches tall with a wingspan approximately double their height.

In addition, a female Ringtail cub was born on June 22.

Products and services are teaming up to make it simple for employers to offer such options. As consumers get accustomed to the new world of health care insurance, more of them will be looking to their employer-sponsored plans for wider choice and nontraditional benefit options such as a wellness and weight-loss program.

I think it’s high time for employers of all sizes to look closely at the defined

association expenses in the coming year. Civil Code 5600(a), requires the association (acting through its board) to “levy regular and special assessments sufficient to perform its obligations” under the governing documents and the law. Part (b) of the same statute covers the other side of the equation, prohibiting assessments or fees which are not linked to anticipated costs. If the association expenses increase, the board must increase the assessments to make sure the property is properly maintained and preserved. Whether your home is part of an association or not, it is a fact of life that certain expenses are part of home ownership and must be handled.

In a CID, those expenses are handled by the board.

Dear D.M.: If your association reserve account is overfunded, the association may be technically violating the aforementioned Civil Code 5600(b), requiring assessments to be linked to anticipated expenses. If your association reserve fund larger than the reserve study requires, the board should consult with its reserve study preparer to recalibrate its contributions. Civil Code 5550 requires associations to create or obtain a reserve study each three years and review it annually. If your association used a professional reserve study preparer, first consult with that expert. Is the study realistically and accurately assessing the need for capital item replacement or refurbishment? Perhaps the board needs to recalibrate the association budget. Remember, the reserve account is your best protection against special assessments or even bank loans (and assessments to cover those payments) if your HOA is not adequately funded.

Since most association reserve accounts are woefully underfunded, if I were to pick which problem to have, I would quickly choose yours!

College costs – A Closer Look

By Kevin Powell One of the largest expenses families face today is how to educate their children. The Great Recession of 2008 had many far reaching effects.

One that seems to have gone unnoticed is the college debt bubble which has soared from $100 billion in 2008 to nearly $1.2 Trillion in 2014. $1 Trillion of that debt comes from the US taxpayer (“We the People�).

Student debt makes up about 7% of the overall national debt.

It is the second highest form of debt in the US behind home mortgages.

Federal loans carry much more favorable repayment terms when compared to private loans and that’s a minor reason for the explosive growth.

Graduates leave college with an average of $27,000 in debt.

Since 2008, tuition has risen about 30% nationally.

Through 2014, eight states have seen tuition surge by at least 50%. The highest is Arizona

with an 80% jump; followed by Georgia and Florida at +66%; and California with a 62% leap.

Why? Because many states slashed education funding when the Great Recession hit. The majority of municipal revenues come from real estate taxes.

When the real estate bubble imploded in 2008, many cities and states found that their tax income plunged. Florida for example is spending 30% less on college funding today when compared to 2007 levels.

Why have state universities raised tuition so quickly when things are still so tough on so many Americans? Because the Federal government has no check or balance system in place for college costs. If institutions want to double tuition next year, rarely do they get challenged. The current federal system will calculate what a family should pay towards their children’s college (FAFSA) and in many cases much of the rest can be made available through Federal Student loans.

With all this spending, it would reason that college graduates have a high paying job waiting for them when finished, right? Not so fast.

A 2013 study showed that a whopping 96% of all college graduates could be in jobs that they are “over qualified� for. This breaks down as follows: About 48 percent of employed U.S. college graduates are in jobs that the

Mark Taper Forum Presents “Marjorie Prime”

By Jack Lyons Theatre & Movie Critic Sometimes it’s difficult to label a play in the traditional manner: Is it a drama, a comedy, is it both, or is it a mystery? In the case of the World Premiere production ”Marjorie Prime”, now on stage at the Mark Taper Forum, it’s a safe bet to say that it’s a little bit all of the aforementioned.

Written by young (37), seasoned, award-winning playwright Jordan Harrison, and directed by Obie winner Les Waters, “Marjorie Prime” is an outside-the-box creative and enigmatic story- premise whose time has come. And, it all takes place in less than 100 minutes.

What takes place on the stage of the Taper is playwright Harrison’s thought provoking “Marjorie Prime” drama of the future. It’s the sort of story that is right up director Les Waters’ alley, and one that writer Rod Serling would, most assuredly endorse. Despite all of the electronics and gadgetry in our tech-heavy society, human stories are still the most engaging and interesting.

The play asks questions about the difference between a

life lived and a life remembered in this, at times, very poignant drama. Everyone’s life is filled with laughter and tears. And Harrison hasn’t left out any of the irony or the comedy in Marjorie’s story. It’s how we juggle and accept or reject life’s events that makes one’s journey so compelling and interesting.

The story in short, is set in motion by Marjorie (a wonderfully wry Lois Smith) a clever woman who at age 85 finds her memory is failing. She is living out her days at an assisted living facility where she is frequently visited by her anxious daughter Tess (Lisa Emery) and her kind, easygoing son-in-law, Jon (Frank Wood).

With the urging of Jon and the facility and despite Tess’ misgivings, a mysterious young man, Walter (Jeff Ward), joins the group with the hope that he can help reverse Marjorie’s decline.

Through an ingenious series of shifting realities, Walter’s nature is revealed, and the family’s memories gently unfold into a cathartic meditation on life and loss, and the desire to keep our dearly departed with us.

There is no test to be given at the end of the play, but Harrison and Waters definitely

challenge the audience to be patient; stay engaged and focused on the story in order to fully appreciate the magic that is taking place in front of them by these four talented actors. The splendidly executed ensemble paints a portrait of a future society we may all be destined to confront one day like it or not.

So, pay attention and discover the relevancy of what’s being said on the stage. It may come in handy.

The Taper’s technical credits are always first rate and this production is no exception.

Director Waters leads a creative team that includes: Set Designer Mimi Lien who provides a spare, monochromatic and functional stage, along with Lighting Designer Lap Chi Chu’s moodinducing lighting that meets the look required for the assisted living requirement.

“Marjorie Prime” may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but if one goes with the flow and vision of the director and the ideas behind the playwright’s imagination, it can be an intriguing, provocative, and interesting evening in the theatre. The production runs through October 19, 2014.

By Desert Star Staff PALM DESERT, CA—The California Community Colleges Board of Governors selected College of the Desert (COD) as one of the community colleges to receive their 2014 Energy and Sustainability Award.

The award was issued to the College for taking steps to reduce energy used in the MultiAgency Library related to the Proposition 39 categories known as ‘Commissioning.’

COD was one of the first community colleges in the state to undergo a Retro-Commissioning project. The college served as a pilot project for others to follow.

Retro-Commissioning generally has very favorable cost-to-return benefits when seeking ways to reduce energy usage.

The library was selected for the project because many

changes have been made to the building, including replacement of major air conditioning equipment, remodeling, and changes in hours of use since it was built in 1996. In addition, energy management systems have significantly improved in the last 14 years.

The project was entirely funded by a combination of Proposition 39 allocation and incentives from Southern California Edison and Southern California Gas through the California Community College/ Investor-Owned Owned Utility Partnership. That group served as the clearinghouse for the project, approving the concept and calculations.

The application was submitted in summer of 2013 following an engineering feasibility study. It was approved

for funding in November of 2013 and completed by the deadline for use of the Prop 39 allocation for the year, June of 2014. Five different energy-saving measures were identified and implemented.

Steve Renew, the college’s Director of Facilities, now retired, stated, “It is anticipated, and initial measurement and verification indicate, that the annual savings will be in excess of 375, 000kwh of electricity usage and 5,500 therms of gas usage. Those are annual cost savings of approximately $50,000 per annum.”

Other energy and sustainability awards were presented to: Copper Mountain College, Retrofit Project Winner; Cañada College, Self-generation Projects; Imperial Valley College, Deemed Incentive Projects; Skyline College, Faculty/Student Initiatives; and Palo Verde Community College, Glendale Community College, Feather River College, Santa Monica College, College of the Canyons, all received Honorable Mentions.

College of the Desert’s Policy on Sustainability states, “All-District District buildings, in response to the policy, will be LEED certified, most at the Silver level and some at the Gold level.”

Taking the extra step of registering college projects for LEED certification and commissioning both the construction process and the buildings adds very little cost to the project, yet demonstrates the college’s commitment to building and operating facilities sustainably.

The Multi-Agency Library opened in April 1996. The facility

is 43,000 square feet and can house 150,000 volumes in its combined College and Public Library collections. COD has three study rooms for currently enrolled students, a room with computers for student use, textbooks for students to use while in the library, reference services to help students find what they need, and many other services.

Shonda Rhimes lays Claim to Thursday Nights on ABC

At least it should on ABC, which has handed its entire Thursday prime-time schedule to drama doyenne Shonda Rhimes.

Starting this week at 8 p.m.

EDT, it’s “Grey’s Anatomy,” with Rhimes the showrunner for this medical melodrama’s 11th season. At 9 p.m., “Scandal” begins its fourth year with Rhimes also serving as showrunner.

Then, closing out Shonday at 10 p.m., “How To Get Away With Murder” premieres with Viola Davis as a rife-with-mystery criminal lawyer who apparently will do anything to spring her clients and who, as a law

professor, trains her students to do the same.

Unlike the other two series, created by Rhimes, “Murder” was masterminded by Pete Nowalk, whose producing credits include “Grey’s” and “Scandal.” On this wicked new addition to the ShondaLand portfolio, Rhimes will serve “only” as executive producer: “I’m like the grandmother,” she joked.

“I hold the baby, then I give it back.”

This baby has a clear family resemblance: “Murder” crackles with rat-a-tat dialogue, larger-than-life characters, outrageously tangled narratives, and a rainbow coalition of a cast led, as with “Scandal,” by an African-American actress.

The “ShondaLand” handle began as “kind of a joke,” said Rhimes. Then, for the company it now identifies, it took hold as shorthand for a shared mission statement. “We all know what we’re talking about in terms of the work and the attitude, and that term sums up our goal.”

A storyteller from childhood, the Chicago-born Rhimes had written the script for the 1999

HBO film “Introducing Dorothy Dandridge,” followed by the Britney Spears hit, “Crossroads,” and the 2004 sequel to “The Princess Diaries.”

But it was “Grey’s Anatomy,” a 2005 midseason replacement, that put Rhimes and ShondaLand on the map.

Today, at age 44, Rhimes reigns as a hitmaker unmatched in TV history, just days from not only ruling a full night of ABC real estate, but also stewarding two broadcast-network dramas with black women as protagonists.

“Why did it take somebody black to talk about being black?”

Rhimes said, marveling that TV has stubbornly resisted mirroring the world she and most people live in, a world she has tried to reflect through her matter-of-fact inclusiveness of race as well as gender, age and sexuality.

“There is no token system,” she said. “We’re gonna cast the best actor for the part. And then our cast makes it feel real and true - they elevate everything.”

(Last week, Rhimes shot back at a New York Times columnist who, in a widely criticized column, referenced her as an “angry black woman” and wrote that that “How To Get Away With Murder” was “yet another showcase series from her production company to showcase a powerful, intimidating black woman.”

“There’s a feeling of flying by the seat of our pants,” she said.

“And it seems sometimes like we’re telling something crazy.

But it doesn’t feel crazy to us.

There’s a plan to what we’re trying to tell, with larger themes that I feel strongly about: lives of women, race in America, politics.

I don’t want to say I’m on a soap box, but there are moments when you can rant a little bit, and that’s kind of fun.

“Mostly, we’re enjoying ourselves. We all love what we’re doing,” she said, then registered the fact she hadn’t quite explained herself. “I guess the answer is, I don’t know.”

One last question was easier to answer: How does it feel to be a big-time TV mogul?

“It feels great,” she beamed. “It’s an amazing vote of confidence from the network.

It’s an exciting moment.”

But before she let herself get too carried away, she cited a Michael Jordan quote. It’s the one where he summed up his job as just playing basketball.

Shari Belafonte Celebrates Her 60Th Birthday

By Pamela Price It was a nonstop desert birthday for one of America’ s classic fitness personalities and “cover girls” from the 1980s, Shari Belafonte. This multi talented woman modeled for magazines from Vogue to Vanity Fair during her career, portrayed Julie Gillette on ABC’s series “Hotel” and hasn’t taken a break, it seems until she decided to turn 60 years old. It all happened in Palm Springs, starting Sept 19th at Gallery 446 in Palm Springs, with a string of high-energy art gallery openings, lunches and

brunches; Laurie Weitz, Shari’s gal pal called it a “nonstop birthday.” Celebrating with family and friends, literally from morning to night highlighted by her famous father Harry Belafonte, calypso legend, actor, activist and winner of Emmys, Grammy and more brought the spotlight on this marvelous father daughter success story.

exhibit “ was a blend of celebrity, charity and art that put a smile on Palm Springs. Her newest exhibit “Give Me Your Goofiest” a collection of photographs from celebrities, such as Suzanne Sommers to artfully posed dogs was installed especially for the birthday crowd at Gallery 446.

Temple Isaiah Dedicates Three Simi Dabah Sculptures

By Pamela Price Rabbi Sally Olin’s spiritual leader of Temple Isaiah in Palm Springs dedicated three sculptures by Simi Dabah, well known Joshua Tree artist on September 20, at 6:00 PM. , Mogen David, Diamonds and Chaukiah. Mr. Dabah has been designing sculptures from industrial scrap for more than forty years donating them to public and non-profit organizations.

He recently presented five of his sculptures to Cathedral City, which can be seen at various locations, including one next to their City Hall. Rabbi Sally explained that most of the artist’s outdoor sculptures were left in its natural state “rusting to a warm patina over the years.”

Japan-via-NYC duo Cibo Matto Come to CA Will be making a rare visit to play at Pappy and Harriet’s in Pioneertown, CA on September 28

By Desert Star Staff CIBO MATTO will be joined by guitar genius Nels Cline (Wilco) on their FALL FLAVOR tour in the US in September and October, following the release of Hotel Valentine earlier this year, their first album since 1999.

Whoever thought when “Know Your Chicken” came out in the mid-90s it would make such a mark on the culture?

We’re talking about a surrealist pastiche about magenta chickens set to boom-BAP break beats and muted trumpet, rapped by a pair of grinning Japanese girls so obsessed with eating that they named every song on their first record after food. It doesn’t exactly spell commercial success, especially for a then-unknown avant-pop act from New York City whose name is Italian for “Crazy Food.”

Self-produced over a twoyear period by Miho Hatori and Yuka C. Honda, Hotel Valentine is their most impressive release to date as it finds them constructing a rich concept album, a love story amid the ghosts traversing the hallways of a hotel. Underneath the lush sonic palate, they have created the soundtrack to an invisible film as they’ve continued to refine their sound and remain fully committed to an ethic of fun.

are guitarist Nels Cline, drummer Glenn Kotsche, percussionist Mauro Refosco, vocalist Reggie Watts, trumpeter Michael Leonhart, trombonist Aaron Johnson, Douglas Wieselman and many others.

Unlike most pretenders, Cibo Matto’s music is an entirely self-contained world, a look into the fantasy lives of Hatori and Honda. Both women were raised in Japan, but met in New York’s vivid 90s Lower East Side art scene that included John Zorn, Sean Lennon, the Beastie Boys, and Marc Ribot, a brief period of colorful experimentation at the outset of the Giuliani administration. Soon after they met, the pair formed a punk band called Leitoh Lychee (frozen lychee nut), which eventually morphed into the post-genre freak out that Cibo Matto would become. Within six months, David Byrne came to see them at a show and Warner Brothers picked them up off the strength of one self-released cassette tape. This initiated one of the most colorful careers of the 90s. Cibo Matto exploded internationally, touring worldwide and releasing two classic records, 1996’s Viva! La Woman and 1999’s Stereo Type A. Their live shows and albums were marked by wild experimentation, incorporating hip-hop, Brazilian music, African and Latin jazz, and pop into their unclassifiable mix.

They collaborated extensively with Yoko Ono, as well as the renowned French director Michel Gondry, who lent his visionary style to cement them in the budding consciousness of the MTV generation with his legendary video for “Sugar Water.” They sold over 100,000 of both of albums and graced seven magazine covers. Then, in a bizarre changes of destiny, many fans discovered Cibo Matto performing in an infamous scene on an early episode of Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Spin magazine included the debut album in their “100 Best Albums of the ‘90s” list, and Time magazine picked it in their list of the “Best Hip Hop Albums of All Time.” Their adoring fanbase grew until 2001, when the band announced an

extended hiatus. During that 10-year interval, both women worked on numerous interesting projects. Yuka Honda released three solo experimental albums on John Zorn’s Tzadik Records, recorded albums with jazz great Dave Douglas and Yoshimi (of the Boredoms), meanwhile producing a number of Japanese pop artists and acclaimed albums by Sean Lennon, Yoko Ono Plastic Ono Band and Martha Wainwright. Miho Hatori released a solo album, two Brazilian discs with Beck guitarist Smokey Hormel & percussionist Mauro Refosco, guested on three Beastie Boys songs, and sang the role of Noodle on the Gorillaz first album, including lead vocals on the hit “19-2000.”

Says Honda, “Having

spent some time apart, we became more aware of our magical chemistry, our magnetic bond. We both realized we had unfinished business.” On February 14, 2011 a Cibo Matto light bulb flickered, and they struck upon the idea of an invisible film, a score without motion, an album called Hotel Valentine.

Hotel Valentine is a metaphor, a question, an answer, an idea, a feeling; A strange and vivid scene. “Hotel Valentine is the cinematic bricolage of Yuka and me,” Says Hatori.

“Our medium is music. For me, making an album is like raising a child. We don’t know what kind of person (story) they will end up to be.”

‘Walk Among the Tombstones’ - A Terrific Thriller Currently, we have been suffering through a real heat wave with triple digit temps and little relief in sight. There’s always a plunge in a swimming pool for a quick fix, or you can chill out in an air-conditioned movie.

Sadly, most summer films have been disappointing, but now, just in the nick of time. A great thriller has opened starring Liam Neeson as private eye Matthew Scudder in Universal’s latesummer hit “ Walk Among the Tombstones.” The film, based on Lawrence Block’s novel, is by far one of the best movies released this year. And of course it stars Liam Neeson which is another big plus.

Scudder, a former NYC cop, has left the force and is working as a private detective. A recovering alcoholic, he regularly attends AA meetings and has been clean and sober for eight years. As the film opens it is 1991, and Neeson, while still on police duty, has gone to one of his favorite bars for a few quick drinks when two young thugs come in and kill the bartender during a robbery attempt.

Immediately Scudder follows in hot pursuit, but what happens next is the reason why he quits NYPD and joins AA. The incident has haunted him ever since.

The film cuts from 1991 and his troubled past to 1999 when Scudder is asked by a fellow AA participant to find the killer of his brother’s wife. It turns out the brother is a drug dealer whose beautiful wife was kidnapped for ransom. Even though he raises the ransom money, the dealer’s young wife is brutally murdered.

Devastated, her husband seeks revenge with Scudder’s help, and he’s willing to pay big bucks.

Scudder begins his search at the library. As he slowly and

painstakingly goes through countless newspaper murder features he starts to see a pattern in several recent horrific killings. The women were all disfigured and mutilated just as the drug dealer’s wife was. While Scudder is a street smart, he is a computer stupid. When he notices a scruffy young teenager across from him, who is a wiz with a mouse, he begins a conversation with the kid. Soon he has talked him into helping him search through countless files for a fee of twenty bucks, a few kind words and a meal.

This, it turns out, is the start of an unusual, but compelling friendship as Scudder keeps running into the homeless kid who admires him and would like to be a superhero detective himself. Their relationship adds to this engrossing thriller as Scudder exposes clues, beginning in a nearby cemetery where another young woman’s body was found in several trash bags floating on the pond not too long ago.

The film skillfully tracks down leads, clues and suspects with plenty of twists and turns.

The action is fast paced, and Neeson is believable as the gritty ex-cop that has beaten the battle with booze by constantly taking everything one day at a time. And Neeson is flawless as Matt Scudder, a flawed man who is not adverse to a bribe or working just outside the law.

This being said, he still is a man of personal honor and integrity.

While he’s not perfect, he has his own moral code and scruples.

Neeson’s Scudder is a guy you can’t help liking. He’s a man who is strong, yet vulnerable. This is coupled with innate competence and a sadness that radiates from his gazes as he faces personal

demons on and off the job.

Overall, the film is engrossing and keeps your interest throughout as Matt tracks down a pair of killers you will love to hate. And the relationship with Scudder and

the kid should hopefully lead to a sequel soon. Neeson’s Scudder is a compelling lead character—a hard-boiled cop with a soft center.

The ultimate confrontation turns out to be a bit Hollywood,

but overall the film is engrossing and well done, with a conclusion that leaves us with a good feeling. I am certain that the sad-eyed Matthew Scudder will be back. Hopefully soon. From Universal, rated R.

Just a short history note: Engelbert Humperdinck born May 2, 1936, in Madras, India.

A year before blues/country, jazz legend guitarist-vocalist Roy Gaines was born in Waskom, Texas. Engelbert moved to UK with his family after the war, he started recording as Gerry Dosey in 1956. He knew music crooner’s famed Dean Martin, Bing Crosby, The Rat Pack, Frank Sonata, Kenny Rogers, Gene Simmons, Kenny Rogers, Smokey Robinson, and Elton John for decades.

He recorded an album of duels a two-disc 24 track duets set with Elton John, Smokey Robinson, and Willie Nelson.

He forgot to call legendary Blues/ Jazz/ Country Singer Roy Gaines. I asked his tall, charming, handsome son who looks like his father, Mr. Humperdinck. Did he know Blues Great Roy Gaines? His son said, “Yes, right away” I asked his son could; he take me to ask his dad a question for Desert Star Weekly Newspaper, and He immediately said,” No.’’ Two of Engelbert’s most popularized hits are called “After The Lovin” and “Release Me” are

really amazing songs like “Lucille Work For Me” recorded by Roy Gaines. Superstar Humperdinck legendary began his set-off with a song that had beautiful Lyrics: “You Hold Me “Every Day. I wake Up.” His attire was a black tuxedo, trimmed in diamonds, a classy gentleman a bit older, but still handsome for the girls.

Fans enjoyed singing with him “Every Day; I Wake Up.” Every time, He sang “Wake Up” the star would hold up his jacket toward his audience. This little kit had driven fans wild and zany. He has not slowed down just kept on going on stage like a ready battery with his shot glass on stage. That moment reminded me when, I had taken my father Blues great Roy Gaines to Frank Sinatra’s Concert at the Universal Amp Theatre in the 1980s. Frank had his shot glass, and his expense bottle of Jack Daniel sat on top of his baby grand piano.

Engelbert engaged his fans with another hit song called, ‘’Help Me Make It Through The Night.”

His Fans sang along and knew all of his Lyrics. Engelbert carries a 10 piece band, just like Roy Gaines carries 18 piece band, and Diana Ross carries about 16 piece band.

Miss Moore asked me what did I learn from my famous father Roy Gaines about the entertainment business? I said, “That appearance is very important and Hygiene that a great amount of Blues Artists do not care about their dressing codes on stage as well as their Leaders. That when, I go to a concert, I don’t go to see the concerts. That I immediately look at the band’s clothes and listen to determine, if the band rehearsed before going on to the stage.” When, I informed her that appearance and rehearsal

He talked about his best friend Dean Martin told him never to go on stage sober.

Fans laughed 7 miles down the 10 West Freeway.

He pulled a song out of his new album with his buddy’s Kenny Rogers, Elton John, Gene Simmons, Kenny Rogers, Elton John. Lyrics were “There was A Time; when, I Was

Nothing.”

He has a special part of his heart for sharing, and I knew, If he really had known that I only wanted to ask him two questions, plus I am a legend’s daughter. He would have said yes. Because, he paid tribute to all of his business friends, especially Willie Nelson by wearing a red scarf. Fans were clapping during Nelson’s kit quite amazing entertainer whom Engelbert Humperdinck. I learn about Humperdinck from my ,father, Roy Gaines.

Engelbert sings with a lot of passion like blues, country, jazz singer Roy Gaines; when, the guitarist sang “The World’s Biggest Fool”, “Make Our Dreams Come True,” and” I’m just Another Blues.”

S P O RT S Knights Hold off Lions’ Roaring Second-half Comeback

INDIO – In a tale of two halves, the Shadow Hills High School Knights football team staved off a massive secondhalf comeback by the Cathedral City Lions at home on Friday.

Adding another victory to the win column is paramount, but almost as important to the players and coaches, the Knights defeated two Desert Valley League teams in three weeks.

Coming off its first loss of the season last week, the Lions (0-0 in DVL, 2-2 Overall) entered the game against the Knights (0-0 in De Anza, 2-2 Overall) looking to prove they are among the DVL’s best, but in the first half Cathedral City looked far

from elite. Poor play calling, poor execution and confusion sums up the first 30 minutes of the game for the visitors.

To put the Lions’ play into perspective, following Tony Williams’ two touchdowns that put the Knights up 14-0 early, senior multi-sport athlete Orlando Wallace uncharacteristically fumbled the kick-off return, giving Shadow Hill the ball back. With only 1:10 gone by in the second quarter, Williams flipped the turnover into a touchdown run, which put Shadow Hills up 14-0 early.

On their next drive, Cathedral City’s quarterback Davin Lile fumbled and Knights linebacker Robert Lares

scooped up the pigskin and ran 65-yards for the touchdown.

Talk about demoralizing, the Lions were down 21-0 and there was still 9:02 left to play in the second quarter.

The Lions were expected to have an explosive offense this season, however, failed to get much of anything going in the first half in Indio. Unsuccessful on their third fourth-down conversion attempt of the game, Lile’s offense gave the ball back to the Knights with 32.7 seconds left in the second quarter.

Shadow Hills quarterback, Isaiah Ortega-Dage, ran in a six-yard touchdown, pushing the lead to 27-0 going into the half.

“He made things happen,”

Knights head coach Ron Shipley said of Ortega-Dage’s performance. “The ran with a lot of heart and he got every yard he could. He’s a competitor and he’s going to give us everything he’s got on every play. That’s what we expect out of him and that’s what he gave us (tonight).”

The tone for the second half was set from the opening kickoff, where Wallace ran 95-yards for an electrifying, momentumshifting touchdown. The Lions were hyped up, but yet again, shoddy defense gave up a 31yard touchdown pass to Noah Brown and the Knights were up 33-7.

Despite giving the touchdown, what was not working in the first half seemed to be working in the second; the Lions were moving the ball and getting stops on defense. A huge 31-yard pass to receiver Darrien Broom set up a touchdown on a Lile quarterback sneak – a successful two-point conversion cut the score to 33-15.

With the Knights unable to get anything going, Cathedral City’s defense stepped up again and forced another punt.

Capitalizing on the stop, Lile threw a six-yard touchdown to Broom and with 8:55 left in the game. Now 33-23, the Lions’ now-tenacious defense gave Lile another opportunity to shrink the deficit.

A clutch, 50-yard bomb to Brandon Knoll put the Cathedral City offense in the Knights’ red zone. With only four minutes left in the game, Wallace scored his second touchdown of the night on a three-yard run. Shockingly, the Lions were only within a field goal, 33-30, and had all the momentum.

Shadow Hills had surrendered 23 consecutive points, yet all Ortega-Dage and Williams needed to do was run the clock out to secure the

win. Continuing its second-half surge, with 50 seconds left in the game, the Cathedral City defense knew there was football left to play and forced a gigantic turnover.

Down 33-7 at one point, to having the win in their sights, the Lions just needed a field goal to at least send the game into overtime – which would be a slight moral victory considering the game’s start. When it mattered the most, the Knights defense buckled down and stepped up with the biggest play of the game. With 40 ticks left, Nathan Tiaga intercepted Lile’s pass, sealing the 33-30 win for Shadow Hills.

“I thought we played great, we played with a lot of heart, a lot of tenacity,” Coach Shipley said. “We played together in that first half and we made way too many mistakes in that second half so we have to find a way to put two halves together.”

In addition to confidently controlling and acting like a true leader of the Shadow Hills offense, Ortega-Dage finished the game with two touchdowns (rushing and passing), 109 rushing yards and 75 receiving yards. Including his two touchdowns, Williams ended the game with 86 rushing yards. Lile had 152 passing yards but two turnovers to go with touchdown for the Lions. Wallace had 91 rushing yards to go with his two touchdowns.

The Shadow Hills Knights have a bye this week but open up the De Anza League season at Desert Mirage on Oct. 3.

This Friday, the Lions welcome the Coachella Valley Arabs to Cathedral City High School for the Desert Valley League opener.

Nearly $1 Million in Property Tax Over Payments Unclaimed

By KMIR News Staff RIVERSIDE COUNTY-Nearly $1 million in property tax over payments from Riverside County residents and businesses will likely be deposited into the general fund by vote of the Board of Supervisors tomorrow.

According to Treasurer-Tax Collector Don Kent, the county has $974,724 in unclaimed receipts -- going back to tax year 1991 -- now destined for the treasury. Between May 1 and Aug. 1, the county advised via newspapers and the county website how people could check to determine whether they were entitled to any of the money.

Last year, the Office of the Treasurer-Tax Collector started out with 2,214 individual overpayments totaling $2.35 million, Kent said. Thanks to stepped-up efforts by treasurer staff -- including phone calls to some recipients alerting them to the fact they had money waiting to be claimed -- the amount was dramatically reduced, lowering the number of prospective claimants to 1,529.

The overpayments resulted from changes in the tax roll that occurred between the time a bill was due and when it was paid, according to Kent.

According to a list

published online, the amounts available to be claimed range from around $11 to just under $60,000. Several companies and individuals were mentioned multiple times. Familiar names on the list included Chase Bank, Citi, DR Horton, Exxon Mobil, Fidelity National Title Co., the Outdoor Channel, the Riverside Community Health Foundation and Sport Chalet Inc. Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Camelot Theatre hosted the Cinema Diverse Film Festival again this year. This is the 7th year of the festival, and it gets bigger and better each year. This year shot 28 feature films with 38 short motion pictures which are more than last year. Record ticket sales again bring this festival as one of the best Gay and Lesbian festivals in the country.

The Festival ran from Thursday to Sunday with after-parties every night at local restaurants.

The opening-night film Saugatuck Fures held its world premier with local celebrity Judith Chapman playing a lead role. The producer and several actors were in attendance for a Q&A after the film. The after Party was at Hunters Nightclub. Friday had a feature film, Three in a Bed with a party later at Appetite. Some of the films started showing as early as 9:30 in the morning to accommodate movie goers to see all the films and shorts. Saturday night’s film was a musical, Waiting in the Wings, with the after party at the Purple Room. Full feature films and shorts were shown throughout each day to a nearly filled theatre.

Sunday night ended in a couple of short films with an after party at LuLus California Bistro.

The after parties are a big part of the festival as it gives movie goers, producers, directors and cast members a chance to get together and discuss the films and shorts and make new business partners and friends.

Friends and Family filled the restaurant to wish Judy a Happy Birthday. Her daughter Lisa Vossler-Smith said her mother didn’t want any fanfare, but she finally made Judy relent to a small party in her honor on Sunday evening, Sept 21st. The party was anything but small as many came to celebrate with her.

Judy Vossler and Pattie Daly-Caruso are the founders of Media Mavens, a group of business women involved in some way with the Media. The group meets once a month to discuss their new events in the desert.
