Skin Care Tips for When Sun Season is Over By Desert Star Staff While essential sun protection is likely your top skincare priority in summer, it’s time to address other skincare concerns during the fall season. One matter, in particular, to pay close attention to is scarring. This is because sun exposure can cause further discoloration in scars. What’s more, scar tissue is more susceptible than other skin to sun damage. Whether you’re dealing with surgical scars, scars from scrapes, cuts, or burns, here’s what you need to know about caring for these vulnerable areas of skin after summer sun: • Cover scars: Protect scars from additional sun exposure whenever possible. Keep in mind that you can still be exposed to the sun beyond summer and indoors, so consider dressing accordingly. • Amplify your protection: As you are apple and pumpkin picking, make sure not to shelve the SPF! Instead, stay consistent with sun protection and be sure your routine includes vitamin C. Protecting skin from oxidative damage caused by daily exposure to light, heat and pollution, vitamin C is an ingredient vital
to healthy skin that amplifies protection and is the ultimate compliment to daily SPF. Check out the portfolio of vitamin C products from SkinCeuticals, which offers something for every skin type. Backed by 16 clinical studies and over 30 years of research, the brand’s serums serve as the gold standard for a host of skincare benefits, including correcting the appearance of uneven skin tone and helping to prevent future skin damage. • Take charge: Doctors recommend having a trusted scar care product readily available in your cabinet. “You need one with a highconcentration of silicone to deliver soothing protection to all scars, whether they come as a result of a cosmetic procedure or an unintended wound,” says Dr. Catherine Chang, SkinCeuticals partner physician with Cassileth Plastic Surgery. One new option to consider is SkinCeuticals Advanced Scar Control, a long-lasting semiocclusive treatment designed to protect vulnerable skin and help improve the appearance of new and recent scars. This protective technology is specifically formulated for
different types of scars, is appropriate for multiple skin tones, and complements surgical procedures. In clinical trials, subjects saw a significant improvement in new and recent scar redness, discoloration and texture, with a 29% improvement in overall appearance in just 12 weeks. Plus, Advanced Scar Control benefits SkinCeuticals and ReSurge International’s charity program, Pioneering Women in Reconstructive Surgery. This initiative provides
surgical training, leadership development and mentorship to women surgeons in high-need areas worldwide to complete life-changing surgeries. The industry has reached 12 countries and over 700 medical professionals. To learn more, visit skinceuticals. com/womensurgeon. • Get a check-up: Fall is an excellent time of year to check your annual dermatologist appointment off your to-do list. During your visit, your dermatologist will evaluate
moles, discoloration and other skin issues. Should your doctor find it necessary to perform a biopsy or mole removal, you’ll be well-prepared to care for any resulting scar tissue by following the above tips. While you may view scars as beyond your control, there’s good news -- a scar care routine can reduce the appearance of scars and better protect this vulnerable skin from additional damage. StatePoint

Coyotes Unveil $1.7B Plan for Tempe Complex
By Desert Star Staff The NHL’s Arizona Coyotes have submitted a
proposal for a $1.7 billion arena and entertainment complex in Tempe, Arizona.
The Coyotes’ plan calls for roughly $200 million from taxpayers, but the team
reportedly plans to pay for the remaining costs. A 16,000-seat arena, the team’s headquarters, and a practice rink would all be located within the complex. There are also plans to add hotels, retail stores, apartments, and a theater. The team had called Glendale home since the 200304 season but lost its lease at Gila River Arena when the city decided not to renew. In August, Glendale city manager Kevin Phelps said that the Coyotes owe more than $1.4 million to the arena as of July 17.
In addition to the Coyotes’ potential new home, the franchise announced a rebrand. • The team will change its primary logo back to the famous “Kachina” graphic. • It will also wear red Coyotes head jerseys for eight games during the 2021-22 season. Real estate and media mogul Alex Meruelo purchased the Coyotes for a reported $300 million in July 2019. As of December 2020, the team is valued at $285 million — the least valuable franchise in the NHL, per Forbes.
FIFA Duels UEFA Over Adding World Cups
By Desert Star Staff FIFA wants to double the men’s World Cup frequency every two years, but it faces opposition from major governing bodies. The global soccer organization released results of a 15,000-person survey indicating international support for the move. However, Europe’s UEFA and it’s South American equivalent CONMEBOL both oppose the concept. UEFA hosts the Euro Cup every four years, and a biennial World Cup could compete with that tournament for fan attention

and player participation. CONMEBOL’s Copa America tournament would face similar challenges. • FIFA’s revenue is highly dependent on the World Cup — it typically posts losses three years out of four and makes it up in World Cup years. The organization took in $6.4 billion from 2017-2020, over 70% of which came in 2018. • UEFA’s revenue is much steadier. It earned between $2 billion and $3.5 billion each year from 2017-2020 for a total of $12.5 billion.
• Qatar expects a $20 billion economic boost from hosting the 2022 World Cup. Europe and South America combine for 65 of FIFA’s 211 affiliated associations, just short of the one-third needed to block any proposal, but UEFA and CONMEBOL have threatened to boycott additional World Cups should FIFA enact the proposal. European and South American teams have won every World Cup in its 91-year history.

How Single-Use Plastics Are Driving Climate Change By Desert Star Staff Did you know that singleuse plastic is a significant driver of climate change and is harmful to human health -- even when it’s recycled? Yet, according to a new report, leading consumer goods companies are driving the expansion of plastic production. And doing so is threatening the global climate and the health and safety of communities around the world. The Greenpeace USA report, “The Climate Emergency Unpacked: How Consumer Goods Companies are Fueling Big Oil’s Plastic Expansion,” exposes the business links between the world’s most significant consumer goods and fossil fuel companies.

Without this transparency, the report’s authors say that consumer goods companies can mainly avoid accountability for environmental or human rights violations committed by the companies that supply plastic for their packaging. “The same well-known brands driving the plastic pollution crisis are helping fuel the climate crisis,” says Greenpeace USA global plastics project leader Graham Forbes. “Despite their best efforts to appear climatefriendly, consumer goods companies are working alongside the fossil fuel industry to expand plastic production, which could lock the world into catastrophic emissions levels and a planet warmed beyond saving.” Indeed, over 99 percent of plastic is made from fossil fuels, and according to industry estimates, plastic production could triple by 2050. This projected growth would increase global emissions from the plastic life cycle by over 50 percent on 2019 levels by 2030, equivalent to nearly 300 coal-fired power plants. This is the same timeframe that the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has warned
human-caused emissions must fall by almost 50 percent to limit warming to 1.5 degrees C. The report also details how single-use plastics hurt people who live on the frontlines of their production. Plastic production has been linked to health issues like cancer and asthma, and poor communities and communities of color disproportionately feel these impacts. Despite the many adverse impacts of single-use plastic packaging, the report finds that consumer goods companies
have partnered with fossil fuel companies for decades to advocate recycling while opposing legislation that would restrict its production “The world’s largest brands are working with the fossil fuel industry to use recycling as a smokescreen. But, unfortunately, recycling will never be the answer to the plastic pollution crisis,” says Forbes. Greenpeace is calling on consumer goods companies to urgently move toward systems of reuse and package-
free products, phase out single-use plastics, and be more transparent about their plastic and carbon footprints. To learn more and to read the full report, visit greenpeace.org/usa/reports. “These companies can no longer hide behind their nostalgic, happy brands. Instead, we urge them to support an ambitious global plastics treaty that addresses the entire lifecycle of plastic and emphasizes reduction,” says Forbes. StatePoint

for years to come. ARFF vehicles stay at the Airport and are always ready to respond to aircraft alerts, fuel spills, hazmat situations, and other emergencies that may arise at PSP. On some occasions, the Airport’s ARFF vehicles may provide mutual aid for off-airport emergencies, such as the fuel spill in Banning along I-10 last month. In this situation, PSP provided one ARFF vehicle to assist CalFire and still meet all FAA requirements to keep the Airport safe and operational. CalFire requested PSP’s assistance as a precaution against the fuel spill since ARFF vehicles can quickly put out a fuel fire by spraying several inches of foam, blocking all oxygen, and preventing a possible wildfire. “These new ARFF vehicles provide the Airport’s ARFF staff with the best equipment possible,” said Harry Barrett, Assistant Executive Director of Aviation. “Palm Springs International Airport and Palm Springs Fire Department continually train and maintain emergency preparedness to provide the best protection, and now we have the newest technology and equipment for the airport and our traveling public.” Source: Pam Price September 24, 2021

Add Meaning to Halloween and Support a Good Cause
By Desert Star Staff As the world faces multiple crises, including the COVID-19 pandemic, families may have to adjust traditional trick-ortreating plans again this year. However, there are still ways to help make a difference and celebrate Halloween virtually. One way to add more meaning to Halloween is to Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF, the United Nations Children’s Fund. Celebrating more than 70 years of fundraising, this annual tradition is America’s longestrunning youth engagement campaign. It has raised more than $180 million to help support children’s health care, education, nutrition, safe water, emergency relief and more. Last year, the unique program was launched as a virtual experience to celebrate Halloween responsibly
while social distancing. This Halloween is evolving into a fully digital experience. However, getting involved virtually can prove just as rewarding. Funds raised will help support lifesaving work to distribute COVID-19 vaccines to communities, health care workers, and families worldwide that need them most. As the largest purchaser of vaccines each year, UNICEF is helping lead procurement and distribution in the most prominent and fastest immunization effort of its kind, and you can be a part of that effort by aiding the organization in raising lifesaving funds and safely celebrating Halloween. Crypto.com Tops $400M in Sports Deals
By Desert Star Staff Crypto.com announced
on Wednesday that it will have a patch appearing on
Philadelphia 76ers jerseys for the next six years, bringing the
total value of the company’s deals with sports brands to more than $400 million. According to the Philadelphia Business Journal, the Hong Kong-based cryptocurrency operator’s deal with the 76ers is worth roughly $10 million annually. The agreement marks Crypto. com’s first in the NBA. The two entities will also collaborate on NFTs. Crypto.com has been quite aggressive about establishing a footprint in sports. It signed a oneyear sponsorship deal with the NHL’s Montreal Canadiens in March. • It announced a five-year, $100 million global partnership with
Formula 1 in June. • It signed a 10year, $175 million branding deal with UFC in July. • It secured a multiyear partnership with Serie A in August. • Last week, it inked a three-year, $29.5 million to $35.4 million deal with Paris Saint-Germain. • Introduced in 2016, NBA jersey patches have sold for an average of $7 million to $10 million per year. Earlier this week, the Los Angeles Lakers secured a fiveyear jersey patch sponsorship worth more than $100 million with Bibigo, a brand under CJ CheilJedang, the No. 1 food company in South Korea.

2021’s Best States for Fishing By Desert Star Staff Grab your fishing poles and head out on the water because National Hunting and Fishing Day, Sept. 25, is fast approaching. Not all of America’s countless lakes, rivers, and shores are an angler’s paradise, though. So, where do you have the best odds of snagging your next big catch? Lawn Love ranked the 50 states to determine 2021’s Best and Worst States for Fishing. We looked for high levels of community interest in the sport, an abundance of water sources, easy access to gear, and affordable fishing licenses, among other factors. Check out the five best

(and five worst) states for your ‘fishcation’ below, followed by surprising findings from our report. 2021’s Best States for Fishing Rank State 1 Alaska 2 Michigan 3 Maine 4 Rhode Island 5 Florida 2021’s Worst States for Fishing Rank State 46 Nebraska 47 Kansas 48 New Mexico 49 Arizona 50 Nevada
Surprising findings: Alaska is King (Salmon): King Salmon reigns supreme — Alaska came in first place overall and the Community rank. Little farming occurs in Alaska due to the state’s cold climate, so fishing has become a cultural staple and a significant industry for jobs and economic activity. More than 600 species of fish to catch and millions — yes, millions — of lakes to explore, making this state a true ‘fishcation’ destination. While Alaska is our No. 1 state for fishing, it comes at a cost. Of all 50 states, Alaska

FDA greenlights Pfizer booster shots for elderly
By Desert Star Staff The US Food and Drug Administration has given its blessing to using Pfizer’s Covid-19 jab for booster doses. The move could impact millions of Americans, including teachers, grocery workers, and hospital staff. Heeding advice from its special panel on vaccines, the FDA on Wednesday moved to approve a third dose of the US
drugmaker’s Covid-19 vaccine to be used on seniors as well as “individuals 18 through 64 years of age and at high risk of severe Covid-19.” It has also been approved for adults “whose frequent institutional or occupational exposure” to the virus ostensibly puts them at a heightened risk of “serious complications of Covid-19, including severe Covid-19.” The announcement
has left plenty of room for interpretation, with epidemiologists and senior fellow at the Federation of American Scientists Eric Feigl-Ding pointing out that it “gives enormous leeway for many people” to get the vaccine, and “not just elderly or healthcare workers.” Indeed, while the FDA fell short of approving booster shots for the US population
as a whole – a view that has been championed by the administration of US President Joe Biden – acting FDA Commissioner Janet Woodcock signaled that the authorization could cover large portions of the population due to the nature of their work. “The FDA amended the EUA for the PfizerBioNTech Covid-19 vaccine to allow for a booster dose in certain populations such as healthcare workers, teachers and daycare staff, grocery workers and those in homeless shelters or prisons, among others,” Woodcock said. The decision may still come as a disappointment for Biden, who has rallied behind the idea that everybody 18 and older should be able to get a booster shot within eight months of their second dose, promising to start rolling out the revaccination program as early as September. The FDA said that its decision was based on “scientific evidence,” “currently available data” on the vaccine’s effectiveness, and its advisory
committee’s recommendations. Today’s action demonstrates that science and the currently available data continue to guide the FDA’s decision-making for Covid-19 vaccines during this pandemic Before voting in favor of booster shots, the advisory committee reviewed several studies submitted by Pfizer that showed the vaccine’s efficacy decreases with time. For example, one study found that the jab’s efficacy plunged from 93% to 53% against the Delta strain four months following the second dose. Doubts, however, have been raised about the accuracy of Pfizer’s observational studies. Even before the advisory board backed the proposed booster shots, FDA officials released a document stating that “known and unknown biases can affect [the] reliability” of the findings. It also noted that available data “indicate” that vaccines “still afford protection against severe Covid-19 disease and death” in the US.
Reusable face mask market valuation to surpass USD 7 billion by 2027
By Desert Star Staff The latest business intelligence report on the ‘global reusable face mask market’ portrays a detailed analysis of the driving forces and opportunities influencing the industry growth trends over 2021-2027. According to MarketStudyReport, the worldwide reusable face mask market size was worth USD 1.7 billion in 2020 and is poised to reach a valuation of USD 7.4 billion by the end of the forecast period 2021-2027, growing at 23.5% CAGR throughout. Besides, the report fragments the market into several segments concerning the material type, application ambit, distribution channel,
and geographical scope. The study also includes a qualitative and quantitative analysis to determine the profitability of each segment. Furthermore, the report also contains a citation of the competitive dynamics, which includes a detailed evaluation of all significant companies’ business profiles and product offerings to understand the overall market scenario better. The rising adoption of face masks as a protective measure against numerous diseases such as influenza, anthrax, swine flu, avian bird flu, and the most recent coronavirus is the primary factor driving overall industry growth. However, a simulation conducted by the University
of California found that masks worn by 80% of the population would be just as effective as strict lockdowns for preventing disease transmission. Furthermore, factors such as the increasing number of new entrants, startups, and local manufacturers, coupled with rising preference for sustainable & eco-friendly choices, are also propelling industry development. For instance, Onzie Inc., a clothing brand, sells reusable masks created using breathable upcycled activewear fabric. The prevalence of airborne illnesses such as COPD, asthma, and numerous cardiovascular infections caused by rising air pollution levels, urban
smog, and industrial & automobile emissions are expected to stimulate global reusable face mask industry expansion. In addition, the rapid development of the healthcare sector in emerging economies is also creating new opportunities for businesses operating in this domain. Despite the positive outlook, fluctuating raw material costs will likely impede market growth over the forthcoming years. Market fragmentation summary Based on material type, the industry is classified into nylon, cotton, and others. Then, moving on to application scope, the industry fragmentation comprises
Groups Push for Progress During Sea Otter Awareness Week
By Suzanne Potter/PNS MONTEREY BAY, Calif. This week, conservation groups celebrate Sea Otter Awareness Week with online and in-person events across the state. Historically, the Pacific Rim supported between 150,000 and 300,000 sea otters, but the population is now estimated at 106,000. Andrew Johnson, the California representative with the nonprofit Defenders of Wildlife, said 16,000 endangered southern sea otters once roamed the California coast. Now, only about 3,000 animals www.desertstarweekly.com
are left, mainly between Santa Barbara and San Francisco. “But they’re still struggling,” said Johnson. “Their numbers are stagnant. They aren’t expanding their range north or south and haven’t for the last two decades.” Great white sharks are a threat to the sea otter. But Johnson said human activity does more harm, especially the pollutants and agricultural runoff that end up in the ocean. You can check out the list of sea otter events this week online at ‘Defenders.org.’ Sea otters were all but
wiped out from Northern California waters during the fur trade of the 1800 and 1900s. Johnson said sea otters are a keystone species - without them, the ecosystem is thrown out of balance. And climate change is warming the ocean, exacerbating the problem. “Over the last seven or eight years with the warming ocean waters, the so-called ‘blob’ along the West coast,” said Johnson, “sea star die-offs, urchin overgrowth, overgrazing on kelp - the system along our shoreline in California is in a rough spot.” September 24, 2021
Conservation groups hope to expand a successful program pioneered at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, where biologists rescued abandoned or orphaned sea otter pups, raised them with a
personal and commercial segments, whereas, by distribution channel, the business vertical is split into online and offline variants. Regional outlook As cited by the report, North America, Asia Pacific, Europe, and Latin America are significant contributors to global reusable face mask industry remuneration. Among these, Asia Pacific currently accounts for a major portion of the overall industry share. Meanwhile, North America is poised to generate substantial returns over the assessment timeframe, driven by the increasing promotion of facemasks by governments and health organizations throughout the region.

executed and delivered to the undersigned a written Declaration of Default and Demand for Sale, and a written Notice of Default and Election to Sell. The undersigned or its predecessor caused said Notice of Default and Election to Sell to be recorded in the county where the real property is located. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (800) 280-2832 or visit this Internet Web site WWW.AUCTION.COM, using the file number assigned to this case 090887-CA. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. NOTICE TO TENANT: Effective January 1, 2021, you may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. Notice to Potential Bidders If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a Trustee auction. Notice to Property Owner The sale date shown on this Notice of Sale may be postponed one or more times by the Mortgagee, Beneficiary, Trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about Trustee Sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call In Source Logic at 702-6597766 for information regarding the Trustee’s Sale or visit the Internet Website www.insourcelogic.com for information regarding the sale of this property, using the file number assigned to this case, CA0800018421-1. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. Notice to Tenant NOTICE TO TENANT FOR FORECLOSURES AFTER JANUARY 1, 2021 You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call 702-659-7766, or visit this internet website www. insourcelogic.com, using the file number assigned to this case CA08000184-21-1 to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Third, you must submit a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. MLS and Liga MX Expand Leagues Cup to All Teams By Desert Star Staff The same day as the second-ever Leagues Cup final, MLS and Liga MX announced plans to interrupt their regular seasons for a month and expand the tournament to all 47 teams, starting in 2023. This year’s tournament
had just four teams from each league and did not interrupt the regular season. The expanded tournament will be an official competition of the CONCACAF Champions League with three qualifying spots and take place entirely in the U.S. and Canada.
Revenue from sponsorships and ticket sales will be split between the leagues. • The leagues will form a joint venture to sell the tournament’s international media rights. • MLS currently earns $90 million each season for media rights, with the MLS Cup bringing in 1.07 million viewers last year — a
30% increase from 2019. • The tournament will be included as a property in MLS’ and Soccer United Marketing’s media rights deal that starts in 2023. However, it’s not clear if the tourney will come as a bundle with regular-season games. Details on prize money and tournament format will be announced in the coming months.

Plan Ahead for This Year’s Holiday Vacation
By Desert Star Staff Whether your family counts a holiday vacation among your treasured traditions or you’re anticipating a holiday getaway for the first time, getting an early start on your planning can help ensure your trip is filled with good tidings and joy. Know what you want to spend. If you’re planning to open your wallet a little wider for this trip than you have in the past, you’re not alone. A survey by American Express Travel found more than 60% of travelers are planning to spend more on trips in 2021 since they missed out on travel in 2020. Setting your budget now can help you make choices about things like accommodations and activities while giving you some extra time to save. Working off a budget from the start can also help you take advantage of book now, pay later options that may give you added savings or incentives. Be conscious of highdemand destinations. Popular travel spots tend to fill up fast, so if you’re considering visiting a high-demand location, be aware of how crowds might affect your plans for everything from wait times at attractions to
rental cars and more. According to vacation rental company Vrbo, prime warm-weather destinations where families can spend the holidays together are already facing lower availability for homes, including Florida and Hawaii beaches. Similarly, Maui, Hawaii, has less than 20% of homes available during Christmas week. Ski spots also see a large share of holiday travel, so be prepared if you’re planning on a holiday hot spot. Manage against the unexpected. Despite all the advantages of planning ahead, it’s impossible to predict unknown variables like the weather when you make travel arrangements months ahead of time. Travel insurance can help protect the majority your investment if you have to cancel your trip. Some policies offer coverage for cancellation for any reason, so you’ll want to research exactly what your policy allows, including weather and pandemic-related cancellations. Book lodging early. With travel volume up and availability for accommodations already trending downward for the holiday season, consider making reservations sooner than later.
Photo courtesy of Getty Images “We typically see December bookings peak in October and November, but families are locking in their holiday vacation plans much earlier than usual,” said Melanie Fish, Vrbo’s travel expert. “Vacation homes have been quickly scooped up during every popular travel season this year, so it’s no surprise families are planning ahead to ensure they have a great place to spend the holidays together.”
Look into local events. In this pandemic age, many attractions and activities have new guidelines, including altered operating schedules, occupancy limits and reservation systems. You can typically find the latest information on websites or by calling ahead. Take these measures into consideration as you’re creating your trip itinerary and organizing advanced reservations.
Consider how the holidays will affect your packing. Traveling during the holidays may mean a different approach to your typical vacation packing. Especially if you’re traveling with children, you’ll need to make space for beloved holiday traditions such as gifts or a visit from a certain jolly old elf. Oswit Land Trust Reconfigures the Proposed Mesquite Desert Preserve
A new proposal is a win-win for the community, open space, the city, taxpayers, tourism and wildlife. By Desert Star Staff Palm Springs, CA---Over a year ago, Oswit Land Trust (OLT) announced plans to combine the golf courses in the heart of Palm Springs and create the Mesquite Desert Preserve, a beautiful 350 acre plus botanical garden/desert preserve that everyone can enjoy regardless of their age and fitness ability. The proposed preserve’s walking paths (which will be ADA compliant) would provide the perfect place for those who cannot climb the strenuous trails of Palm Springs and commune with nature, bird watch, meditate, walk dogs and more. Many people experienced this vision when the golf courses were closed down due to the pandemic. The feedback was phenomenal! Over 1,000 residents joined our Facebook page in just a few days and encouraged us to move this idea into reality. However, OLT has met with many neighbors surrounding the Legends Golf Course and learned that residents surrounding that course would like to retain that course for golf (houses do not cover the Resorts Golf Course). We respect those residents and have changed our proposal to consider their wishes. Oswit Land Trust would like to acquire the Resort Golf

Course to create a preserve and proposes that the Legends Golf Course remains a golf course for the surrounding residents. This would satisfy the desires of everyone in the community. It would provide a beautiful preserve/botanical garden for those who don’t golf and provide a full 18 hole golf course with a driving range for those who do. It would also end the city having to subsidize golf with up to $1.2 million per year transferred from the general fund. In acquiring the Resort Course, OLT would protect that land from future development and create a preserve for all to enjoy in perpetuity. This would preserve that land regardless of future state bills such as AB672 requiring municipal golf courses to be converted to developments. It would also protect that open space from future city councils that decide to sell off the property for development. Jane Garrison, Founder of Oswit Land Trust, said, “This is not just about us and our needs; this is about preserving open space for future generations. We need to be thinking 20-30 years from now. Would you rather see that land destroyed and developed or maintained as open space? We need to act today for tomorrow.
It is our responsibility.” OLT recognizes that the Legends Course would still be at risk of being developed in the future, so we would encourage the residents to work toward historic status on that course, as some have said that a famous golf architect built the course. Oswit Land Trust has created an impressive team of professionals who will assist and oversee the creation of the Mesquite Desert Preserve. Those professionals include UCR, PhDs in ecology, biology, botany and over 200 Master Gardeners, landscape architects, California Certified Naturalists and California Climate Stewards. Our vision is to enhance the beauty of the current state and intends to increase, not decrease, the use of greywater in cooperation with the Desert Water Agency. Residents do not need to fear the resort course would turn into a “dustbowl.” Furthermore, because OLT is a private entity, it can enforce that no unhoused encampments will be allowed to exist in the preserve. OLT is working with Bel-Air Greens and Mesquite Golf Course owners to join these properties with the Resort Course to create the Mesquite Desert Preserve. OLT has a zoom PowerPoint presentation September 24, 2021
available to present to neighborhoods and organizations. To schedule, please email Paisley@ oswitlandtrust.org
