Clinton/Trump Debate

‘Clinton-Trump debate shows emptiness, vapidity of US political election cycle’ The debate has shown how sensationalized, vapid and empty the US election cycle is, said Brian Becker, from the anti-war Answer Coalition, adding that the candidates’ attempts to outdo each other on military support is not a good harbinger for US politics. A CNN/ORC poll shows that majority of voters feel Hillary Clinton
won Monday night’s debate over Donald Trump. According to Brian Becker of the anti-war Answer Coalition, one cannot judge who won by CNN polls as it has been actively campaigning for Clinton. “They have a few proTrump voices, but pretty much the CNN as a network is for Clinton – just like
Fox is for Trump. They are not really media outlets; they are echo chambers for the respective political campaign,” he told press. “The debate showed how vapid, how sensationalized, how empty the American political election cycle is – very expensive, but very long, and very empty. Both of them tried to outdo each other to show

who had more support from the generals and admirals. It is not a good harbinger of where things are going in terms of American politics,” Becker said. Ahead of the election, Clinton and her supporters have been repeatedly using anti-Russia rhetoric and accusing Trump of being “unwitting agent” of President Putin and posing a threat
to “US national security.” On Monday, Clinton played her Russian card again to attack her opponent. In Becker’s view, it’s an attempt to divert public attention from the party’s own wrongdoing and, also, the escalation of tensions with Moscow will only benefit the
Arnold Palmer Helped Put Coachella Valley On The Map
By Vince Marino COACHELLA VALLEY -Golf great and part-time desert resident Arnold Palmer is being remembered across the Coachella Valley today. While his impact on the sport of golf is undeniable, the golf legend’s contributions to the Coachella Valley may be just as significant. He was called “The King,” winning 62 PGA tour events including seven major titles. Following his death on Sunday, President Obama released a statement. Part of it reads: “With his homemade swing and homespun charm,
Arnold Palmer had swagger before we had a name for it.” Close friend and golf rival Jack Nicklaus wrote: “Arnold transcended the game of golf. He was more than a golfer or even great golfer. He was an icon. He was a legend.” Palmer and his involvement in charity golf tournaments like the original Palm Springs Golf Classic helped to transform the Coachella valley into the golf mecca of the world. “When Arnold showed up in the early sixties, he was dominating and he was a huge personality. He started
something, even before, this tournament was very well known. And so that was critical in the development, and without him, you can argue whether television and golf would have really taken off,” said John Foster, president of Desert Classic Charities. It was his time on television, with the snow caped San Jacinto Mountains in the back drop, that drew people to the desert from all over the country. Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Cinema Diverse held its Palm Springs LGBTQ Film Festival on Sept. 22 through the 25th. The Festival has grown so much. They required two theatres to hold all the moviegoers. The Camelot Theatre has always been the one theatre to hold all the films but this year. The Desert Cinema was included in Cathedral City. The Festival is always well received by all genders
and sexual preferences in the Desert by filling the seats of all the movie houses. The opening-night film was Lazy Eye, which was a 90-minute film where a Graphic Designer from LA reconnects with an old love from 15 years ago. The movie was filmed in Joshua Tree, which made it a special film threat. There was an opening night after party at Appétit CalItalian Bistro in Palm Springs.
The Judy Show
Producers and directors made it to the after party to greet fans and discuss all the movies that are being shown. Over 50 films were shown during the Festival that included short and regular length films. There was an after party each night at various local restaurants and bars. Family Businesses Create Great Opportunities for Children
By Janice Gough Owning a family business offers many benefits when we involve our children. Growing up in a business, while your parents build their business is an education, sometimes not offered until you go to college. Children get to learn firsthand, how to manage others, how to work alongside them, and how each job serves to build the success of the business. There are many tax advantages one can take when having your children work for you. By shifting income from yourself to

your kid, you will eliminate the federal tax from your income, by at least 35%, and more than cover the Social Security tax imposed on earned income. A child with no investment income pays 0 percent tax on the first $6,100 of earned income. By combining this strategy with establishing a kiddie ROTH I.R.A., more taxes are reduced. If the parent has maxed out their ROTH I.R.A. contribution, they can offer matching contributions to their child’s plan, offering another tax deduction to the parent. This would not affect their ability to qualify for the Federal Student Aid program. An I.R.A. account can give your child the opportunity to learn about saving and investing, provide them with a $10,000 tax free withdrawal for their
first home, and build an educational fund. It will grow tax-sheltered, while benefitting from compounding interest. Your child can use this money to their advantage throughout their lifetime to solve life challenges and hold it to age 70 1/2, when they must take required annual distributions. College students working in a family business are eligible for the American Opportunity Tax Credit ($2,500 a year for four years of postsecondary education). Parents cannot claim this deduction. If your child earns enough income, they may be able to escape the kiddie tax on gifts of appreciated securities. Together, these strategies can give you kids a get-rich boost: lower income taxes, avoid a tax hit on investment gains, help
to reduce college expenses, and provide a head start on tax-advantaged savings. Other costly expenses which a parent may pay, such as health, dental, critical illness, long term care, and life insurance can be deducted from the business income before tax. The payroll taxes paid by the employee and employer are sometimes discounted. However, by having your child on payroll, you are protecting them from loss of income from work related injuries; you are helping them accumulate their social security credits, and providing protection in case of disability with State Disability Insurance. Furthermore, if something happens with the business, they will receive income continuation with unemployment insurance.
Further deductions can be taken by the business as the child becomes more valuable to the business, such as Key Man life insurance and Buy/Sell agreements funded with life insurance. For your child, the experience gained in the family business will build their leadership skills, provide longevity to the business and build their career.
By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. Dear Sir: You have mentioned the open meeting law. You still have not addressed the board going into secret meetings called executive sessions. Personnel decisions also must be kept confidential and are also proper for closed session, but most associations do not have “personnel, since they have no employees. So long as the board votes only on items properly within closed session, no further membership vote is needed. However, if a board mistakenly handles business in closed session, it should be promptly disclosed in an open meeting, with a motion to ratify the mistaken action. Whether the issue is personnel, attorney advice, or other of the proper closed session topics, it is critical that directors protect the confidential information and not disclose it outside the board. Many associations require the directors annually sign a confidentiality promise, to remind them of that important responsibility. Thanks for your questions, Kelly

Executive Session - Used or Abused?
Dear R.P.: Closed or “executive session is an important tool, protecting certain very sensitive subjects which would damage the HOA or certain homeowners if discussed openly. Closed sessions are specifically authorized by Civil Code 4935. Dear Kelly: I have a question about what is/is not allowed in executive sessions. I thought personnel matters and discussions with attorneys were the two major items generally allowed for executive session discussions. Is that correct or am I off base? Does a general session vote need to be taken on items discussed in executive sessions? G.K., Rancho Bernardo Dear G.K.: Conversations with association attorneys must be kept confidential to

Leyva Environmental Justice Bill Signed Into Law
By Desert Star Staff SB 1000 Will Improve Health & Safety of Residents in Disadvantaged Communities SACRAMENTO – Following an outpouring of support from residents and community groups throughout California, Governor Jerry Brown signed legislation authored by Senator Connie M. Leyva (D-Chino) that will require the development of an Environmental Justice (EJ) element for future local General Plans. State law currently requires cities and counties in California to develop comprehensive General Plans addressing seven mandated elements—
land use, circulation, housing, conservation, open space, noise and safety—to the extent that the provisions are locally relevant. By including an EJ element or policies in General Plans, SB 1000 will help lessen the impact of pollution and other environmental contaminants on residents in disadvantaged communities. Throughout the 20th State Senate District and California, disadvantaged communities bear a disproportionate burden of pollution and environmental hazards. Inappropriate land use remains a leading cause of environmental inequities, from the lack of basic
infrastructure in rural areas to the exposure of residential and other sensitive land uses to toxins from industrial facilities. Consequently, residents in these communities often suffer higher rates of asthma, birth defects and cancer. According to the California Environmental Protection Agency, almost 7.4 million people—or roughly 20% of California’s population—live in areas that are burdened by high concentrations of pollution. Furthermore, nearly half of all Californians live within six miles of a polluting facility and children in poverty are even more likely to live near these facilities.
“SB 1000 will ensure that local cities and counties specifically analyze potential environmental justice impacts on communities in California,” Senator Leyva said. “I thank Governor Brown for approving this important bill that will help to ensure that we protect vulnerable residents from pollution and other environmental hazards on the front end. Oftentimes, communities are forced to address environmental justice issues, such as air pollution or drinking water contamination, after the fact. SB 1000 will statutorily require that local communities proactively
evaluate and address these potential impacts in their General Plans. The success of this landmark legislation is due, in large part, to the support and hard work by dozens of community, environmental, health, and public policy groups from across the state that were committed to seeing SB 1000 become law. That desire has now become a reality.” SB 1000 is co-sponsored by the Center for Community Action and Environmental Justice (CCAEJ) and the California Environmental Justice Alliance (CEJA) and will officially take effect on January 1, 2017.
By Desert Star Staff Sacramento – Sept. 26, 2016 – California’s Latino community is strongly behind Proposition 52, a ballot measure that will continue a well-established partnership between the state and local hospitals that protects MediCal funding for the more than 13 million people who depend on this program for their health care needs. “The patients that benefit directly are our most
vulnerable patients,” said Dr. Hector Castillo, M.D., White Memorial Medical Center in Los Angeles. “These would be children, seniors, and very often working families who wouldn’t be able to afford health insurance from the private sector.” Proposition 52 ensures that the ability to attract federal dollars will continue without interruption, and it ensures that the funds are used to benefit Medi-Cal
patients as intended by prohibiting the Legislature from spending these dollars for other purposes. Proposition 52 protects a successful program, currently set to expire in 2017. Since the program began in 2009, it has attracted more than $18 billion in federal matching funds, which has been used to provide access to vital health care services for patients who are enrolled in Medi-Cal. Without that
partnership, California would leave that funding unclaimed in Washington, D.C. Supporters of Proposition 52 from the broad network of businesses, medical organizations and associations that advocate for and support the Latino Community include the Latin Business Association, Hispanic 100, Hispanic Dental Association of San Diego – Bi-national Chapter, Familia Unida/Los Angeles,
Network of Ethnic Physician Organizations, Clinica de Salud del Valle de Salinas, Clinica Monsenor Oscar A. By Desert Star Staff PHOENIX – Today is National Voter Registration Day, a day when thousands of individuals, organizations, celebrities, businesses and elected officials are pounding home the message that Arizonans now have less than two weeks to register to vote in the presidential election. The deadline to register to vote is Monday, October 10th. Diane Brown, executive director of the Arizona Public Interest Research Group Education Fund, said her group is speaking at community events and on campuses across the state over the
next two weeks, because even though the share of the youth vote increased in 2004 and in 2008, the numbers are still very low. “In the last presidential election in Arizona, 38 percent of millennials voted compared to 61 percent of individuals 30 years or older,” she said. In surveys, many young adults say they want more unbiased information about the candidates. The Secretary of State set up Arizona.vote so people can read about the ballot measures and the candidates for federal, state and local office, as well as find out how to register, and where
to vote on November 8th. You can also call 1-877-THE-VOTE. Brown said people who vote also tend to give back to the community in other ways. “Voting is a habit that can help lead to additional civic engagement and ultimately a more representative, vibrant democracy,” Brown explained. According to the Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement, almost a million millennials in Arizona are eligible to vote this year. Go to www.Arizona. vote to register online or fill out a paper copy at your local county recorder.

Seniors’ Eyes on Presidential Debate to Pin Down Social Security Plans
By Desert Star Staff SALT LAKE CITY – Social Security reform can be a hotly debated issue, especially during presidential elections. But once in office, officials rarely want to touch what some call the “third rail” of U.S. politics. The last time the program was adjusted to ensure longterm solvency was during the Reagan administration. AARP Utah State Director Alan Ormsby said the group’s

“Take A Stand” campaign is targeting the first presidential debate on Monday to get candidates to commit to making Social Security a priority and put detailed proposals to safeguard the program on the table. Ormsby said, “We would love for the moderator to ask the question, ‘What is your plan for Social Security?’ And it would be really great to see those candidates lay out their plan
for keeping Social Security strong and fiscally stable.” Ormsby said the campaign is also urging all congressional candidates to lay out at least one plan that would make Social Security financially sound so future generations get adequate benefits. AARP isn’t advocating for any particular plan or candidate, but Ormsby said now is the time to move the program into the 21st century. September 28, 2016
Ormsby noted keeping Social Security strong also makes good business sense. The program contributes almost $9 billion annually to Utah’s economy, according to AARP research conducted in 2012. Ormsby said if public officials don’t take action, future retirees could lose up to $10,000 a year. “If we don’t have action on Social Security relatively soon, we’re gonna then start bumping up against
some very hard dates,” he added. “And we don’t want this to be done in a crisis mode. We want it to be done thoughtfully.” The report found just under half of Utah retirees would be living below the poverty line if not for Social Security. And while most of the benefits go to seniors, nearly a third of all recipients are children, people with disabilities and widows or widowers.

Advocates Hope Presidential Debate Primed the Pump
By Desert Star Staff AUGUSTA, Maine – Local voting-rights advocates are hoping the first presidential debate primed the pump to get more Mainers registered to vote. Today is National Voter Registration Day, and Jill Ward, the president of Maine’s League of Women Voters said they hope to get across the message that it is important to be registered to vote. “We really do want to raise awareness about voter registration,” she explained. “We want people to feel prepared. We want them to be prepared with the facts on what they need to be registered to vote, and vote on Election Day.” Ward said Maine has some of the highest voter
turnout in the nation. Part of the reason, she said, is that the state adopted “sameday registration.” Still, she believes it is critical for as many Mainers as possible get the message about the importance of voting. Ward said events are planned across the state today to reach out to voters of all ages and to newly eligible younger voters to make sure they are registered. “We’re doing them in libraries, farmer’s markets, we’re doing them at high schools to get some of our newer voters, high school seniors who are eligible to register to vote,” Ward said. “We’re doing them on college campuses.” In the Bangor area, a National Voter Registration

other vital issues that have been prominent in the campaign, Becker said. “It really shows the emptiness of the campaign.” Trump and Clinton “can keep exchanging attacks against each other, and they are right, because both are corrupt, both are dirty dealing here,” Becker said. “But again, it doesn’t speak to the substantial issues in America. One out of every two Americans is now either in poverty or near poverty; that did not get discussed in the debate.” Debates lack wider perspective as third parties not allowed Libertarian Party candidate Gary Johnson and Green Party candidate Jill Stein were not allowed to participate in the debates due to low ratings.
The third party candidates failed to pass the 15 percent minimum nationwide threshold needed to join the first debate. Both Johnson and Stein were hosting their own online debates in a bid to challenge the Clinton versus Trump debate. According to James Lark, former Libertarian party chairman they did manage to make an impression. “Many Americans have now come to the conclusion that the debates - while interesting and in some ways entertaining - are certainly lacking in the sort of having the wider perspective that other parties can provide,” he told the press. “The Libertarian Party is on the ballot on all 50 states and the District of Columbia. This is a very difficult test to perform. I think that many people would like to hear Governor Johnson’s perspective. Even if they don’t agree with the Libertarian perspective with
respect to various important issues, they still feel that that perspective should be represented,” he said. A number of media outlets were urging American voters not to support third party candidates, telling them they have to vote for “the lesser of two evils”. James Lark says that approach is not particularly right. “For those people who believe in limited government, getting government back to its proper role of protecting rights, I tell them that my crystal ball broke a long time ago. I don’t know what the right strategy is. I don’t tell people for whom they should vote. I tell people however, I want to vote for someone who believes in individual liberty coupled with personal responsibility. The vote for a third party candidate, such as Governor Johnson, will have a much bigger impact on this election than voting for ‘the lesser of evils’,” Lark said.

Veteran Actor Hal Linden - Still here and going strong By Lisa Lyons Special to the Desert Star Weekly From the Broadway stage, where he won a Best Actor in a Musical Tony Award for “The Rothschilds”, to his Emmynominated performance as the laid back police captain in “Barney Miller”, Hal Linden has been one of the most watchable men working in entertainment for over 65 years. At age 85, the still debonair Linden is still treading the boards, most recently in a well-received version of “The Fantasticks” at the Pasadena Playhouse in which he plays an aging thespian trouper named Henry. Linden’s first Broadway appearance was in “Bells Are Ringing” in 1956, and in between then and now a lot has changed on the theatre scene. Echoing the words of a character in Sondheim’s “Follies”, “Good times and bum times, I’ve seen ‘em all and, my dear, I’m still here!” and he has many thoughts on the nature of theatre and the place it holds in popular culture and our history. I was able to chat with the affable actor recently where we looked back at his storied career.
After a 70-plus year career in music and theatre, what do you think of the new directions that Broadway is taking these days, with different themes and language in shows like “Hamilton” and “Fun Home”? There are changes in the genre but the rules of theatre haven’t changed. Maybe the language has changed, but the rules haven’t. The same things touch people, make them laugh, make them enjoy. We haven’t changed as human beings that much. So I don’t know that it has really changed; the shows are different but the process is the same.

Have you seen “Hamilton”? Yes, but I must admit I had some difficulty with the show because the language used is not the language I was brought up with in theatre. The legendary director George Abbott believed you must tell the story as simply and clearly as possible so people can get it the first time through. I definitely recommend anyone going to “Hamilton” to listen to the cast album a few times before seeing the show. It’s difficult to appreciate the language when you’re not used to it. Sondheim said “lyrics are not poems” - poems you read over and over, discern the meaning. But lyrics have to be immediately understandable at the moment you are hearing it. It has to be perfectly clear or you lose your audience. We may be experimenting in different areas, playing with casting, but it’s still theatre, you still have to play the action and objective and the audience has to understand or you’re not communicating with them. “Barney Miller” which aired from 1975 to 1982, really pioneered diversity casting featuring Black, Hispanic, Jewish, Asian, and female characters. Other than Norman Lear and Danny Simon shows, most sitcoms were pretty homogeneous. Why do you think it worked so well? I think because the writing was solid, not “trendy”, and always very relatable. I recently put together a clip reel for a concert appearance I was doing, and I had to sit down and watch over 100 hours of “Barney Miller” episodes. I was amazed at how substantial they were, and that they still hold up almost forty years later. But casting diversity is
nothing new. The show I’m in now, “The Fantasticks”, was always very Pirandello-esque, with heightened emotions, never your kitchen sink reality, and that was back in the early 1960s. This production is probably the most diverse cast in its 50-year history. Yet, the key points are not lost... it’s visually shocking for the first minute or two, when you see a Black father with an Asian daughter, but the instant you become involved in their stories, that disappears. It only increases the point of the play which shows that all these things are universal and touch everybody whether they look like you or not. Are there still parts being written out there that you can play? There are plays about older people but they are few and far between, most of the things happen to people in their prime and that’s where the adventure occurs. But unless you write a play specifically about old people, there are going to be very few parts left and that’s the truth of it. Is there any role you wish you’d been able to do? As far as musicals, what parts could I play now, seriously? I’m too old for all of them - but there are classic roles I never played, like Henry Higgins in My Fair Lady, the King in The King & I, or Harold Hill in “The Music Man. These are roles I could have done, but at the time I either wasn’t available or something else, and I didn’t get the chance. I never played El Gallo, that’s a role I should have played 50 years ago. I would have loved to play that part. But I’m beyond those roles now, so there’s no point in thinking about them. Any director you would have loved to work with? In films, there were many directors I would love to have worked with - Scorsese, Lumet, Kazan. I made films that were nicely directed, but never one with a “great director”. I really wanted to work with really terrific film directors, that’s one part of my career I missed. But hey, it’s not over yet, right? However, on stage I was blessed to work with many legendary directors such as Harold Clurman, Bob Fosse, Jules Dassin and George Abbott, which was a phenomenal opportunity.
L-R Jack Soo, Gregory Sierra, Abe Vigoda, Maxwell Gail, Ron Glass and Hal Linden in “Barney Miller” players, although I had to turn down some of his shows as I was doing something else; Then I got cast as Barney and I was not available. But I could have made a career working for Abbott, he was a big fan of mine, loved my work. Just look at the parts I played for him. I did one show “Three Men on a Horse” with Sam Levene. Mr. Abbott told me to pick the part I wanted to play. I picked a character who should have been played by an older character like Maxie Rosenbloom, yet I was only 38 at the time. After that, the next part I did for him was the John Raitt role in Pajama Game. Mr. Abbott would have let me play anything I wanted! He was a joy to work with. With all your experience, first in music then in theatre, do you see yourself as a mentor? Not really, because I was never classically trained in this business, I got into it by accident as I was a brash personality as a young man. I was a band singer, then had my own band for a while, and that’s how I slid into the business. I didn’t start studying any kind of formal technique until I was on Broadway. So a lot of what I do I learned over the years and that’s hard to codify. I don’t have discipline to sit down and write a syllabus on how to act. I help my fellow actors whenever I see something, maybe I’ll ask a question that might stir them in the proper direction of thought, but it’s not my function to do that, so I don’t do it -unless they are really friends!
Abbott was one of the great stage directors. He lived to be 107 years old. Yes! I learned so much What’s the best piece of working with Mr. Abbott. in life seriously except yourself. When you start taking yourself seriously, then you’re in trouble. Learn to laugh at yourself, because we are flawed human beings who do and say stupid things. Just say hey, that’s me and go with it. Did you follow it? Yes! I have a great story about my late wife Frances to illustrate that point. Back in the late 1970s, I was named one of the Ten Most Watchable Men in America by a group called Manwatchers Inc. They presented me with the award that looks like a bowling trophy which greatly amused my wife. After it sat around ignored for a few weeks, Fran announced she had found the perfect permanent spot to display it - in the bathroom! From then on, we took that trophy everyplace, putting it on the commode to remind me “Don’t take yourself so seriously!” So what’s next for you? Can we look forward to more local stage appearances? Yes! I am in talks to do a show at the Old Globe in San Diego, a wonderful theatre. As soon as I am able to discuss it, I’ll have more details to share. Linden also continues to do various concert appearances across the country; you can also hear his still silky voice on his debut CD It’s Never Too Late, a diverse collection of Broadway and film tunes, classic pop songs, as well as jazz standards and favorites from the American Songbook. You still have time to catch him in “The Fantasticks” at the Pasadena Playhouse until Sunday, October 2nd. For ticket information, visit http:// www.pasadenaplayhouse. org/box-office.

“October Sky” A Sparkling Energetic Gem By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic When the Soviet Union launched their space probe named “Sputnik” into orbit around the earth on October 4, 1957, it was a wake-up call for America signaling that the ‘space race’ between Russia and the United States had begun. That small, 180 pound metal ball, however launched more than a scientific experimental race for supremacy in the heavens. It inspired generations of young, eager, and gifted American students to view their world differently, encouraging them to dream about what limitless opportunities the event offered for mankind and for true dreamers. “October Sky” now receiving its West Coast Premiere at San Diego’s Old Globe Theatre, is based on the 1999 movie of the same name, from a screenplay written by Lewis Colick based on a story by Homer Hickman, Jr. This sparkling musical, brilliantly directed and choreographed by Rachel Rockwell, features 19 songs from the pen of Michael Mahler and a libretto by Brian Hill and Aaron Thielen that just blows the socks off the audience, thanks to the young energetic 24-member cast/ensemble who bring to life the story of the Hickam family and town folks of the fictional West Virginia coal mining town of Coalwood. The story, set in 1957, explores the lives of the Hickam family who are steeped in the tradition and culture where pride of family, hard work, and loyalty to their community defines who they are.

Photo credit Jim Cox John Hickam (Ron Bohmer) and his wife Elsie (Kerry O’Malley) are a family with two sons: Jim Hickam (Liam Quealy), the high school football team captain who is college bound on a scholarship, and younger son Homer, an earnest dreamer whose head is usually in the stars and dreams of building and sending rockets into the heavens, sensationally played by actor/ singer/dancer Kyle Selig. As the musical drama opens, the coal miners are seen descending into the mine singing the haunting song “To the Mine” led by Ken, their union representative and fellow miner, solidly played and sung by Kevyn Morrow. For those not old enough to know what coal miners and their families endured 60 years ago, before John L. Lewis and the union movement secured federal protection and safety rights, one could expect frequent mine disasters along with ‘black lung disease’ as a retirement reward. It was, and still is, a very tough job. Homer and three of his high school classmates Austyn
Myers as O’Dell, Patrick Rooney as Roy Lee, and Connor Russell as Quentin, portray their roles as budding rocketeers with an energy and exuberance that only comes with the confidence of youth. At home, however, Homer finds his father less enthusiastic about his science project with rockets and all that stuff. John, as the mine superintendent, reminds Homer that his destiny lies underground in the mines in the Hickam family tradition and not with rockets in the skies. Elsie Hickam’s secret feelings favor her son’s desire to make a better life for himself above ground has more than merit. It’s what has to take place. She has attended too many miners funerals and she’s determined that Homer will not follow the miner’s path. Homer and his friends find a champion for their rocketry cause in their high school chemistry and physics teacher Miss Riley, winningly played by Sandra DeNise, who runs interference for the boys with school officials. Through her influence and assistance, Homer and the boys are allowed to build and launch the school-made rockets until they are ready to enter the State science fair, then to on the National levels, which they win. “October Sky” is an uplifting, feel-good type of play that boasts 19 songs with such numbers as “Look to the Stars”, “We’re Gonna Build a Rocket”, “Stars Shine Down”, “The Man I Met”, and “The Last Kiss Goodbye”, the latter number being especially poignant as sung by the miners’ wives and girlfriends. Ms. Rockwell, making her Old Globe directing debut, stages her production with intelligence and love of the story line. Her traffic management choices and skills are fluidly and seamlessly executed. With a cast of twenty-four it’s pretty easy to get a little crowded on stage. However, with Scenic Designer Kevin Depinet providing a stunning set and space that puts a coal mine September 28, 2016
entrance with a descending elevator, a school classroom, a family kitchen, a metal work shop garage, and rocket launching pad exteriors, the challenges of mounting this splendid production are a piece of cake. Big productions require big sets. I remember his visually stunning set design of “Sense and Sensibility” in July of this year. Large casts make it difficult to list everyone, however in every production there are always stand-outs. In “October Sky” they include Kyle Selig, Ron Bohmer, Kerry O”Malley, Sandra DeNise, Kevin Morrow, Connor Russell, Patrick Rooney, and Austyn Myers. The Old Globe has few equals when it comes to providing its directors a state-of-the-art technical arsenal from which to choose. I kept waiting to see how Ms. Rockwell and the technical wizards at the Old Globe would convincingly handle the firing of rockets from the stage. I need not have worried… they are flawlessly launched. As a side bar regarding the actual rocket launch in real life by Homer Hickam, the last one soared to over 30,000 feet! Costume Designer Linda Cho gives that spot-on 1950s look for the young people and the adults. And her grimy, coal-dusted costumes for the miners are appropriately realistic. The lighting design by Japhy Weidman enhances the mood of the miners and highlights the exuberance and athleticism of the young dancer/singer/ actors in the interior scenes. The orchestrations by Bruce Coughlin are under the baton of Music Director Charlie Alterman, and those wonderful rocket launch special effects come courtesy of Markus Maurette. “October Sky” is a splendid musical production that performs at The Old Globe’s Donald and Darlene Shiley Theatre through October 23, 2016. Healthy Grocery Shopping Tips A trip to the grocery store can be stressful if you’re not properly prepared. Impulse buys may induce bad shopping decisions. Learn how to prevent making these decisions and stick to healthy meals for yourself and your family. A busy lifestyle can get in the way of healthy meal preparation. Sometimes the convenience of packing a lunch with a quick sandwich and some chips can be tempting. Consider some healthier alternatives and set aside a few hours to prepare healthy meals and snacks for the week. Planning a smart grocery list is a great way to set yourself up for a healthy week of eating. STICK TO YOUR LIST Before you embark on your shopping trip, do your research. Find your store’s weekly ad, look for healthy sale items and create your

weekly meals from there. Having this list will make grocery shopping more efficient and greatly reduce the time you spend there. Grocery stores are known for eye-catching displays that may sway you to make an impulse buy. Having a list and strictly following it will make it easier to avoid these displays and purchase only sensible food choices. HEALTHY HOT SPOTS If you have paid attention to the layout of most grocery stores, you’ve probably noticed that the healthier choices are located around the perimeter. There, you will find the fresh produce, meats and dairy sections. Shopping the perimeter first will load your cart with healthy choices and make it easier to avoid packaged, processed foods found in the middle of the store. Your grocery store’s meat department can be a goldmine in the
quest for a healthy shopping trip. Look for fresh fish and chicken. These two meats are packed with healthy fats and protein that will add loads of nutrition to any meal. KEEP IT FRESH When planning your healthy shopping trip, avoid processed foods and spend a little more on fresh items. Processed foods are loaded with preservatives in order to provide a longer shelf life. For instance, the meat that your butcher slices daily has much lower levels of sodium nitrite than that of the prepackaged meats that arrive frozen. Consider purchasing your bread from the bakery, where most grocery stores bake their bread daily. Buying fresh bread helps you cut out many of the preservatives, artificial flavors and loads of added sugar that can be found in some of the processed options.

‘Barbecue’--a Saucy Comedy At The Geffen
Yvette Carson, Cherise Booth, Omar J. Dorsey, Kimberly Herbert Gregory and Heather Alicia Simms. Photo by Jeff Lorch Photography. The Geffen Playhouse kicks off its brand new season with the West Coast premiere of “Barbecue,” a new play by Robert O’Hara (”Bootycandy”). Act I opens in a picnic area where three sisters, and their brother are setting up a barbeque. However, the real reason they have come together for this family picnic is to stage an intervention with their sister Barbara.(Rebecca Wisocky/ Cherise Boothe) who is addicted to drugs and booze. She is also one mean, nasty deceitful sibling. In fact, to be on the safe side brother James T. (Omar J. Dorsey/ Travis Johns) has come armed with a stun gun, just in case she attacks. And he uses it in one of the funniest scenes in the play. But his first target turns out to be their harddrinking younger sister Marie

(Heather Alicia Simms/ Elyse Mirto). Another sister, Adlean (Kimberly Hebert Gregory/ Dale Dickey) is a chain smoker with cancer who pops her meds as if they were M & Ms. But when the time comes, will Barbara agree to be sent to Alaska for the cure. This far, far away location was chosen by elder sis Lillie Anne (Yvette Cason/ Frances Fisher), the most together being in this truly dysfunctional clan, because there is no way Barbara will be able to come home before she is rehabilitated... Act I takes place in a park, somewhere in middle America—somewhere in the present. Act II begins before the action in Act I and ends after everything that took place at the start and middle. If this sounds hard to follow, don’t worry because O’Hara brings
everything together before we head to the glamorous and celebratory finale. Now, back to the Act I barbecue. The first scene is performed by an all-white cast. After the blackout, the story continues and everyone is black, then white, then black. Perhaps the color change throughout symbolizes the fact that addiction is more a matter of class and dysfunction than race. However, it also makes perfect sense on another level that cannot be described without ruining all the surprises in the plot. I wondered, before I sat down to write this, how I would explain the onstage shenanigans without being a spoiler because I have to confess I was not sure why the cast kept shifting to black and white, even though each
group represented just one truly messed up family. But, believe it or not, it will all makes sense in the end. Most of the big laughs are in Act I. In fact, one of the funniest lines belongs to Marie, who wanders around with the biggest booze bottle you’ve ever seen. Before Barbara shows up elder sis Lillie Anne demands that Marie opens up her purse, which might be filled with illicit drugs. In reply, Marie clutches her bag saying, “I don’t have to go do nothin’ but stay black and die.” “Barbecue,” at the Geffen Playhouse, 10886 LeConte Ave., L.A. through Oct. 16. Staying Healthy at Work
If you consistently put in full-time hours at your company, you probably find yourself exhausted after the end of a busy work day. Working 40-plus hours per week at any job can expose you to unhealthy habits and conditions, especially if you have a high-stress role with demanding responsibilities. From washing your hands to making a little time for exercise during your work week, there are steps you can take to make sure you remain healthy at work.
DOING YOUR PART Regardless of your workplace environment, bacteria can easily be found there. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends frequently washing your hands with hot, soapy water for at least 20 seconds. It also is a good idea to keep a bottle of alcohol-based hand sanitizer around to use after coughing or blowing your nose. Getting preventive vaccinations also is a good

How to Choose a Physician
Your physician will learn many confidential things about you — things that you may even feel uncomfortable talking about with your closest friends. It’s important to find a physician you can trust when discussing health-related details. Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, the number of people with health insurance has increased dramatically. With this influx into the healthcare marketplace, it may actually be a challenge to find the perfect physician for you. Don’t get discouraged, and definitely don’t settle when you’re making this very important decision. QUESTIONS TO ASK Does your physician accept your insurance? Most insurance companies offer a directory, revealing all physician offices that accept their clients. For added assurance, call the physician’s office to make sure it hasn’t dropped your insurance plan. Are you comfortable with the hospital your physician is affiliated with? If your physician

that needs to remain private. If compromised, someone else can open credit card accounts, apply for loans and even gain access to your bank accounts. The best ways to prevent someone else from gaining access to your SSN include: keeping your card in a safe place (at home, not a wallet), frequently checking your accounts for fraudulent activity and using an identity protection service. TAKE CONTROL While you may think leaving your data in the hands of your medical professionals means it’s protected, it may not be in your best interest. Doctors are in charge of many different records, which can mean unintentional mistakes. Do yourself a favor and check up on your medical records to avoid errors.
trying it at the workplace may seem impossible. Depending on the type of job you have, exercise may be hard to come by, but it’s important to squeeze it in when you can. Busy work days make it too easy to justify picking up a quick lunch from the local fast-food place. Instead, pack yourself a healthy lunch and eat at work. Utilize the extra time you saved by not driving to the fast-food restaurant to go on a walk during your break. This combination of healthy eating and moderate exercise can do wonders for your waistline.
there are a few that should be industry standard. Consider finding a different physician if scheduling a routine appointment takes more than a week. It also can be helpful to find out if the doctor offers sameday visits and ask how much time to expect to spend in the waiting room.
COMFORTABILITY AT THE OFFICE Feeling comfortable with your physician is a critical factor when making your choice. It also is important to pay attention to the other members of your physician’s staff. Remember, the people who are scheduling your appointments, relaying messages to your doctor and greeting you as you enter their building were put in place by your physician. Disrespectful or inefficient staff should be a red flag about the physician’s practices. HOW IMPORTANT IS FOOT HEALTH? The American Podiatric Medical Association states that your two feet contain more than 50 bones, 60 joints and 200 muscles, tendons and ligaments that work in unison. All those moving parts and your feet still can handle the stress of your busy day. That should be enough to get you to provide proper care. Being further away from your heart than any other body part also may cause your feet to incur issues. Certain diseases, such as peripheral arterial disease, can slow down your heart’s attempt to pump blood to your feet because of a buildup of plaque in your blood vessels. • Athlete’s foot: A fungal infection commonly found in areas where many people walk around barefoot. Sweaty feet are more likely to catch this infection. • Ingrown toenail: A toenail that pierces a person’s skin causing inflammation and infection. Wearing tight-fitting shoes or the same pair of socks without washing causes the skin to become moist and weaken, allowing the nail to penetrate more easily. • Verrucae: Warts that are usually found on the soles or near toes on the feet. Again, caused by moist environments such as swimming pools and locker rooms.

Why Sunscreen Is Good for You
Warm weather means not having to wake up extra early to scrape your windows or shovel your vehicle out of the snow to get to work on time. As welcoming as the sun may be, it’s important to be keen on its dangers. Many Americans associate the sun with barbecues, visits to the beach or just being outside in general. Of course, some Americans never worry about a cold-weather season because they live in climates where it’s warm year-round. No matter where you live, it’s important to enjoy the sunny weather while also protecting yourself. Wearing proper sunscreen will ensure fun in the sun without damaging your skin. WHY WEAR SUNSCREEN? Skin is the largest organ in your body. It protects internal organs, regulates your body
temperature and absorbs vitamins to repair damage. The importance of protection should be taken very seriously. A good way to protect your skin on sunny days, is to generously apply sunscreen. Sunscreen uses several ingredients to create a barrier between your skin and the sun. The American Cancer Society estimates that more than 75,000 cases of melanoma (skin cancer) will be diagnosed in the United States in 2016. Melanoma rates have been increasing over the last 30 years. The average age of diagnosis if 63, but it is not rare to have a diagnosis in someone younger than 30, especially young women.

known to cause melanoma. Remember that waterresistant doesn’t meant waterproof. The American Cancer Society says to read the fine print on a bottle that makes this claim. It will specify whether it lasts 40 or 80 minutes while swimming or sweating.
Another factor to consider in your sunscreen is the SPF, which stands for sun protection factor. The SPF number is the level of protection against UVB rays. A good level to have is SPF 30, as it will filter around 97 percent of UVB rays.

Located along a rustic bend in the road off Interstate 10 at the Beaumont Ave. exit is one of California’s most fascinating museums when it comes to preserving 16th o 19th century decorative arts. It began when a stately historic home now known as the Edward-Dean Museum & Gardens was a private residence designed by two gentlemen who, as history has it, once owned a rather marvelous antique shop on La Cienega Blvd. in Los Angeles. According to Joan Quinn of The Joan Quinn Profiles,a television program devoted to the arts, “at the time, during the midcentury it was a fabulous antique shop, they had rare works of arts found nowhere else, many sourced from European mansions. This eclectic collection of decorative arts was almost too much for one store!” Many of those precious antiques found eventually found their way to the

Cold Weather Workout Tips
Don’t pack away your workout routine just because the weather turns cold. Exercise is important, no matter the temperature. Although it may take more motivation, it is still possible to keep up your workout during the winter. Certain factors can make winter exercise dangerous, but follow the tips below to keep the body you worked so hard for during the summer.
PLAN FOR DIFFERENT VARIABLES Keeping an eye on your local weather forecast can save you a great deal of trouble when preparing for a workout. Plan to stay inside if the forecast calls for rain or snow. Unless you have waterproof exercise gear, your body will have trouble keeping
up your core temperature. Wind chill is another factor to consider. The Mayo Clinic reports frostbite is rare when temperatures are above 5 degrees Fahrenheit but becomes much higher with a wind chill of minus-18 F. Even a warm set of clothing may not be enough to stop the wind from penetrating layers and making your skin vulnerable to frostbite in chilly conditions.
PROTECT YOURSELF The cold may make it harder to realize that you are becoming dehydrated. You are just as likely to become dehydrated whether you’re working out in the cold or heat. Keep your body hydrated by drinking plenty of water before, during and after your work out. Just because you don’t feel thirsty doesn’t mean your body
doesn’t need to be replenished. When your body is cold, blood flow is focused on the core. This may make your hands and feet more susceptible to frostbite.
Wearing a thin pair of gloves and covering them with a heavier pair lined with wool will protect your hands and give you a layer to remove if they become too hot.
A pair of shoes that are just a tad bigger than what you usually wear will give you room for a pair of thick, thermal socks to keep your feet from getting too cold.
to ban the use of a toxic pesticide called chlorpyrifos. The feds banned home uses of the insecticide in 2000 but have allowed farms to continue to use it to keep bugs away from crops such as apples, pears, nuts and corn. Patti Goldman, managing attorney with the Northwest Office of the environmental law organization Earthjustice, Earthjustice, which filed the petition, said American farmers use about 8 million pounds of chlorpyrifos a year, putting their employees’ health at risk. “It’s basically treating workers like second-class citizens, and so it’s time to put an end to that delay and to protect the workers and their families,” she said. Chlorpyrifos is a nerve toxin proven to cause neurological deficits in children who live
near the fields. In 2015, the EPA tried to negotiate with the pesticide industry to reduce its use or limit human exposure, but the talks failed. Advocates say they are prepared to take this issue to court if the EPA continues to drag its feet. Erik Nicholson, national vice president of the United Farmworkers Union, said the EPA needs to take regulatory action immediately. “The science is not in question,” he said. “The big question is why is the federal government continuing to allow this dangerous pesticide to be used in the production of the food that we’re eating.” Nicholson added that protective clothing isn’t enough to keep farmworkers safe because chlorpyrifos poisons the air, the food and the soil around them.

By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Even as oral arguments begin today in federal court on a challenge to President Obama’s Clean Power Plan, two new studies show that California’s manufacturing sector could save billions by working toward the plan’s goals. The studies, done by Georgia Tech and The Alliance for Industrial Efficiency, found that, compared with doing nothing, California industry could save $8.4 billion a year on its energy bills by 2030, and $80 billion over a 15-year period, money that could be used to develop new products or modernize their plants. Jennifer Kefer, the executive director of the Alliance for Industrial Efficiency said clean energy is not an
either-or proposition. “Our report demonstrates very clearly that one can cut carbon while saving money,” she said. “I think we have exposed the myth that clean energy and manufacturing competitiveness have to be in conflict.” Researchers also found that in a business-as-usual scenario, energy bills for industry in the state would rise almost 50 percent in the next 15 years, but would fall dramatically if they improve energy efficiency, which would help California comply with the Clean Power Plan. Kefer said that nationwide, industrial energy efficiency alone could reduce carbon emissions by 175 million tons in 2030. “That’s equal to the emissions from 46 coal-fired power plants, about onethird of the carbon targets
so they petitioned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on Wednesday

Tell me more: Just when you think you have heard everything the Beatles have ever recorded, along comes another jewel to help celebrate the legacy of the Fab Four. Released earlier this month, the Beatles’ “Live at the Hollywood Bowl” (available on audio CD, vinyl and digitally) truly captures the energy and fan frenzy of Beatlemania. Recorded at the Hollywood Bowl during a trio of sold-out summertime dates in 1964 and 1965, the original recordings have been remastered by Giles Martin, the talented son of the Beatles’ late producer George Martin. The great news now, that is unlike the 1977 vinyl release, the Beatles stellar voices and musicianship can be heard clearly above the girls’ screams. NOTICE OF PETITION TO ADMINISTER ESTATE OF: Alberto Dell’Orto AKA Alberto Dell’orto CASE NO. INP1600679 To all heirs, beneficiaries, creditors, contingent creditors, and persons who may otherwise be interested in the will or estate, or both of Alberto Dell’Orto AKA Alberto Dell’orto. A PETITION FOR PROBATE has been filed by Matteo Gatti in the Superior Court of California, County of RIVERSIDE. THE PETITION FOR PROBATE requests that Matteo Gatti be appointed as personal representative to administer the estate of the decedent. THE PETITION requests authority to administer the estate under the Independent Administration of Estates Act. (This authority will allow the personal representative to take many actions without obtaining court approval. Before taking certain very important actions, however, the personal representative will be required to give notice to interested persons unless they have waived notice or consented to the proposed action.) The independent administration authority will be granted unless an interested person files an objection to the petition and shows good cause why the court should not grant the authority. A HEARING on the petition will be held in this court as follows: November 1, 2016 at 8:45AM in Dept. 1A located at 46-200 Oasis Street, Indio, CA 92201. IF YOU OBJECT to the granting of the petition, you should appear at the hearing and state your objections or file written objections with the court before the hearing. Your appearance may be in person or by your attorney. IF YOU ARE A CREDITOR or a contingent creditor of the decedent, you must file your claim with the court and mail a copy to the personal representative appointed by the court within the later of either (1) four months from the date of first issuance of letters to a general personal representative, as defined in section 58(b) of the California Probate Code, or (2) 60 days from the date of mailing or personal delivery to you of a notice under section 9052 of the California Probate Code. Other California statutes and legal authority may affect your rights as a creditor. You may want to consult with an attorney knowledgeable in California law. YOU MAY EXAMINE the file kept by the court. If you are a person interested in the estate, you may file with the court a Request for Special Notice (form DE-154) of the filing of an inventory and appraisal of estate assets or of any petition or account as provided in Probate Code section 1250. A Request for Special Notice form is available from the court clerk. Attorney for Petitioner: Jaime Mannon One Montgomery Street, Suite 3000, San Francisco, CA 94104 (415) 391-4800. Border Patrol Finds Meth in Vehicle’s Hidden Compartment By Desert Star Staff INILAND, Calif. – El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents assigned to the Highway 111 checkpoint, arrested a man suspected of smuggling methamphetamine on Saturday. The incident occurred at approximately 9:45 a.m., after a 24-year-old man approached the checkpoint in a blue 2007 Honda SUV. During primary inspection, a Border Patrol detection canine alerted to the vehicle. Agents referred the man to the secondary inspection area for a closer examination. After a more thorough inspection of the vehicle, agents discovered a hidden compartment in the firewall of the SUV. The compartment contained 38 vacuumed
sealed packages wrapped in cellophane which contained methamphetamine. The methamphetamine weighed 37.98 pounds with an estimated street value of $83,556. “This seizure highlights the important role played by our K-9 handlers and their partners in keeping our communities free from dangerous drugs and the violence associated with their sales and distribution,” said Acting Special Operations Supervisor Miguel Garcia. The man, a United States citizen, the vehicle, and the narcotics were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration for further investigation. From Oct. 1, 2015 through Jul. 31, 2016, El Centro

Will sex robots conquer our beds soon?
By Desert Star Staff Sex with a robot - is it a dream idea or a nightmare? Opinions vary widely. When it comes to the company True Companion, Sex Robots are commonplace in the future. The company offers their own words to the first sex robot with artificial intelligence. His name: Roxxxy - and he or she mastered much more than just the Love Game. Roxxxy can listen, talk and feel touch. Your mood changes during the day, as with real people. You may be tired, in a talking mood, or may desire to have sex. The Sex robot costs about 9000 Euros and is available in many different variants and models. Buyers can select hairstyle, hair-color, eye and skin color as well as the tone of the eyebrows, as well; a buyer can additionally decide the type and color of the pubic hair. Special requests in this category of course do cost more. Wild Wendy and young Yoko In the Gold version, Roxxxy can take five different personalities. There is the “frigid Farrah,” which is described as shy. The “young Yoko” that needs to learn a lot, waiting for that something to be taught. Open-minded and adventurous, however, is “Wild Wendy.” There is also the “S & M-Susann,” which is ready for the user to inflict pain and act out unusual fantasies. And the “mature Martha,” which should be very experienced and their users like to teach something. All Sexroboter can have an orgasm. Besides Roxxxy the manufacturing, company True Companion also offers

The aim of the company bosses Matt McMullen is to provide the puppet with artificial intelligence, so that normal conversations with the owner are possible. In addition, the robot is in use reactions, can show and meaningfully respond to situations. McMullen said last year in an interview: “With artificial intelligence can perhaps produce that doll something really like the illusion. That would be a much more impressive experience than if they just moved her hips by itself. “He wants to offer its 2017 first sex dolls with artificial intelligence for everyone. Potential customers for the market of sex robots are plenty. A survey of ‘Voucher Codes Pro’ that in England was published this summer came to
a surprising conclusion. Total 2816 sexually active Britons were asked over 18 years, what they would do with a robot. 21 percent indicated that they would like to have sex with the robot. First place ends up with 45 percent of cooking and cleaning’ immediately behind: One should be able to converse with him, and he should do the job. Why do people want to have sex with a robot? “Collect a new experience” was cited as the most common reason. 28 percent of those who indicated in the survey that they want to have sex with a robot crossed this. Another reason stated as many as 27 percent said they believe that the robot would be very good in bed. Already for some time, warn different researchers that sex robots are potentially harmful to society. They want to clarify how a robot
actually affects the lives of women, children and men. Kathleen Richardson that is a researcher and social anthropologist and expert on humanoid robots from De Montfort University in Leicester feared that women would be devalued by the robot to pure sex objects and therefore, call for a global ban sex robot. The futurologist Ian Pearson, on the other hand, sees a bright future for sex robot. In its report “Future Sex, Gender and Design,” he says that in less than ten years, women have more sex with robots as with men. In 2050, in his opinion, the sexual intercourse with the artificial beings will be smoother than between people. By the way: If man even falls for the robot, then there is now already a term for it. This tendency is called Robophilia.

Progressive Groups Decry Plan to Lure Raiders to Las Vegas
By Desert Star Staff LAS VEGAS – Progressive groups are speaking out against Gov. Brian Sandoval’s new proposal to raise taxes on hotel rooms in an effort to secure $750 million for a new football stadium he hopes would lure the Oakland Raiders to Las Vegas. The governor is expected

to call a special session of the State Legislature to vote on the plan in the next few weeks. Bob Fulkerson, state director of the Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada, calls the project – which is backed by casino magnate Sheldon Adelson – a waste of public money that would be better spent
on more pressing needs. “We need to invest in our kids’ education before we need to invest in a rightwing billionaire who’s worth $30 billion,” Fulkerson said. “Which is more important: educating our kids, or giving our scarce tax money to Sheldon Adelson?” A 2015 report from September 28, 2016
the conservative nonprofit Taxpayer’s Protection Alliance found that taxpayers have spent nearly $7 billion on stadiums for the National Football League without commensurate benefits to the public. Fulkerson warned his group will put up a fight when the special session convenes. “We’re going to try and make it as noisy and as difficult as possible,” he said. “Everybody says when it goes into it, it’ll be a slam dunk – but you know, not so fast. I think the people need to have the last word on this, not Sheldon Adelson.” Supporters of the plan say a professional football team would boost civic pride. Fulkerson counters that Nevada would be better off with an education system that leads the nation. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Nevada is sixth from the bottom in terms of education funding.

“The Fantasticks”
(L-R): Conor Guzmán, Ashley Park, Regi Davis and Gedde Watanabe in The Fantasticks at The Pasadena Playhouse. Photo by: Jim Cox Photography. By Lisa Lyons I have been a musical theatre fan all my life yet I must be the only person in the country who has never seen a production of “The Fantasticks”. I knew some of the songs (I can’t hear “Try to Remember” without reaching for the tissues), but I had no idea of the plot or previous stagings. This turned out to be a good thing for the current Pasadena Playhouse production, because I had nothing to compare to their lovely, lyrical version of Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt’s modern day fairy-tale of love, loss and redemption. I knew the late great Jerry Orbach played the narrator and “bandit” El Gallo, but not much more than that. For those who don’t know, “The Fantasticks” original offBroadway production ran a total of 42 years and 17,162 performances, making it the world’s longest-running musical. Wisely, veteran director Seema Sueko doesn’t let that history hold her back from creating a revisionist version that works perfectly in 2016. Loosely based on the play “Les Romanesques” by Edmond Rostand, the story is simple: It’s about a Boy, a Girl, two Fathers and a Wall, as troubadour El Gallo states in his introduction. It tells the story of two neighboring fathers Bellomy (an endearing, blustery Regi Davis) and Hucklebee (the delightfully pixie-ish Gedde Watanabe) who trick their children, Luisa (played with bravado and beautifully sung by Ashley Park) and Matt (a sweetly winning Conor Guzman), into falling in love by pretending to feud and building a high wall between their houses. The plan goes swimmingly, with the young couple virtually swooning into each other’s arms, until the fathers overplay their hand by deciding to seal the deal by hiring a slightly shady bandit-for-hire, El Gallo (solid, sensual Philip Anthony Rodriguez), to stage a mock “abduction” of Luisa so Matt can become her knight in shining armor and save the www.desertstarweekly.com
day. However, no good deed goes unpunished as they say, and the outcome is a botched affair that ends with both young lovers disillusioned and angry. Assisting El Gallo in his masquerade are two veteran theatrical actors who have seen better days. As played by Broadway and TV veteran actor Hal Linden (The Rothschilds, Barney Miller), Henry is an Actor with a capital A who mixes up his Shakesperean roles, but still steals scenes like a pro. It’s wonderful to see Linden back on the stage, his charm and wonderful voice still intact. His hapless sidekick Mortimer, played with gusto and great physical humor, by Amir Talai, enacts his “death scenes” which will have you laughing out loud. One very important character in the show never speaks, but makes her presence felt - Alyse Rockett as The Mute. She is Ariel to El Gallo’s Prospero, conjuring the magic required to turn simple pieces of fabric and metal into a wall and acting as a silent Greek chorus of one. Act 1 is full of energetic set ups and memorable songs, including the poignant “Try to Remember” and the lovely ballad “Soon It’s Gonna Rain.” However, in Act 2 things take a darker turn as the two nowseparated lovers eagerly set out to explore life outside their own backyards and come face to face with the treachery, evil and duplicity of the world at large. When they reunite, as you know they will, it is with a renewed depth of love and appreciation for their lives and each other. “Without a hurt, the heart is hollow,” sings El Gallo. There are so many lovely moments in this production, which is staged much differently than previous versions. Instead of a small stage with a ladder, a blanket and few props, Scenic Designer David F. Weiner creates an abandoned theater complete with cobwebs, dripping water pipes and trunks full of old props that the actors use to create their illusions. The simple accompaniment, led by Music Director/Conductor David O, consists of piano and harpist Liesl Erman, enhances
the fairy tale quality of the score and choreography by Kitty MacNamee is clever yet simple as befits the story. Costume Designer Shirley Pierson, Lighting Designer Josh Epstein, Sound Designer Joe Huppert and Fight Choreographer Tim Weske complete the outstanding technical team. This is the first show of the 2016/2017 season, which will be the last for outgoing Artistic Director Sheldon Epps, who is moving on to work his magic in Houston theatre; however, he is passing the torch into the excellent hands of Executive Artistic Director Danny
Ashley Park, Alyse Rockett and Conor Guzmán in The Fantasticks at The Pasadena Playhouse. Photo by: Jim Cox Photography. Feldman, who will join the Playhouse family in the next fe. If you haven’t seen “The Fantasticks”, I highly recommend taking someone you love - a spouse, child or parent - to introduce them to the magic of theatre. If you have seen it, come prepared to re-discover its charm once again. It will call to you, and you
