Frampton’s Guitar Circus

Two Bombshells Peter Frampton and Buddy Guy perform at the Hollywood Bowl By Desert Star Staff Two phenomenons guitar players Frampton & Guy landed a 747 ‘BLUES ROCK’ music concert on their Hollywood Bowl Fans. Frampton’s Guitar Circus Tour was not a disappointment on a cool, breeze, summer night. The evening reminded me of notable Nat King Cole hit

song called,”Unforgettable.” Peter’s and Buddy’s singing was remarkably graceful, smooth, sharp, and they displayed confidence. What happens when the Hollywood Bowl combines “Blues & Rock” Fans to escape from the summer hot temperatures around Southern California without late Robin Williams on stage to make us

Laugh. We Love You Robin Williams!!! This type of Volcano as lava flows that produced a Hollywood Bowl’s mesmerizing night of Blues and Rock Music, traffic, mountain views, crowded freeways, green, yellow, red stoplights, Buddy’s black, white Polka-Dot guitar, and Peter sang about “Money” all blended into

By KMIR News Staff INDIO, Ca. - A judge today denied a defense motion to overturn a grand jury indictment charging a Cathedral City councilman with embezzling funds from an employee loan program. Riverside County Superior Court Judge Charles Stafford scheduled a Sept. 15 trial date for Cathedral City Mayor Pro Tem Charles Frederick Vasquez, who was arrested April 8, 2013, and later indicted on three felony counts of embezzlement by a public officer. Defense attorney Ruben Sanchez argued that the indictment should be overturned

because the prosecution didn’t tell the grand jury that a city administrator who testified against Vasquez had been indicted in federal court on a charge of receiving a stolen and altered check made out to a taxpayer ``with the intent to convert the property to her own use.’’ Sanchez argued the information would have shown the grand jury that Tami Scott wasn’t credible to testify against Vasquez. Deputy District Attorney William Robinson countered that prosecutors didn’t know Scott had been indicted until last April. Vasquez admitted to a District

Attorney’s investigator that he bought personal items with city funds, and ``the evidence was overwhelming independent of Ms. Scott’s testimony,’’ according to Robinson. An asset protection manager at Sam’s Club in Palm Desert pulled records for Vasquez’s Sam’s Club purchases, and found that the dates matched the dates when he invoiced the city for purchases of computer items, according to the prosecutor. He said an October 2011 summary showed that Vasquez returned a computer and bought items such as T-shirts and food.

condensed massive dates for Frampton’s Guitar Circus tour. The Fans enjoyed the new and old favorites. George Guy brought the house down with his sexy; wildfires ravage, electrifying ‘’Blues Notes’’ that make your hair stand up in the back of your head. Ha! Ha! Next, Buddy Guy kicked off his short 45 minutes

Frampton’s Guitar Circus at Hollywood Bowl Continued from Page 1 Hop came around.” Mister Guy told the girls that there isn’t anything that he had not done, and the girls keep coming back night after night: from his four years-old album called,’Living Proof’ and title song “74 Years Young”plus another hit song called ‘Guess What”on ‘Living Proof’ CD that I love to sing about your hair is all messed up, Baby. The famous Blues guitar player stage was decorated with a blue logo. Polka-Dot guitar reminds him of his beloved, Mom. The Super Star said,”He is 78 years young. He has so much opened fire canon balls, incredible-talent left to share with his bluest world-wide fans. This veteran can still pick up the guitar to show off his smooth 21st century engineering, professional vocals. Wow! Go! Go! Blues, Legend Buddy Guy. From your Hollywood Bowl Fans, Happy Birthday! We Love You!! Some of his Fans said, Peter Frampton was good, but Buddy Guy was the Real Deal Star tonight.” Buddy Guy’s guitar player Ric Jazz said,”my guitar playing is good and Bad like late James Brown’s craft. He said,”Dunlop’s strings are the best strings. That, I ever touched and work with my La Machine.” Jimmy Dunlop said,”We are so Lucky to see Buddy Guy still hitting the Blues Notes and

tuned into the Blues. He is one of the Blues last standing guitar players today.” The High Score of the Night is why I attended Frampton’s Guitar Circus to write about him. I first heard of Mr. Peter Frampton’s name last year, when, I talked to the King of Blues B.B. King’s manager, Tina. B.B. and Peter were performing at the Greek Theatre last year in Los Angeles. Mr. Frampton’s energy on staged came from Mars just like Buddy Guy’s blues lyrics in one of his songs say,’’What kind of woman is she must be from Mars.’’ “Mr. Peter is well seasoned and totally professional. He reminded all of his Hollywood Bowl’s Fans that Hard Work equals a professional guitar player and singer,” said his fan International R & B Singer Jahsha V. Frampton and Guy are Legendary Trailblazers now, but they are in their game for Life. Peter and Guy let us know that they do stay awake to be successful entertainers in the world. Peter said,” He last played at Hollywood Bowl in 1969. He slowed his fans down with a slow-moving melody: you gave up a part of me, and you are my family and friends, Lyrics. The crowds were dancing, screaming, hollowing and sang lyrics to “Taking Care of Business’’. HA! The Super

Star’s Fan said,” Peters’s voice is great!!!.” Peter Framptons’s vocalizing and guitar playing demanded his audience to listen closely while he sang the lyrics,”I want you to show me the way.” Those Lyrics were beautiful, enchanting and soothing for his audience listening skills. Robert Randolph and Peter performed jointly on his song called “Going Down.” He and David Hidalgo played guitar together on a song called,’’Más y Más .” Frampton follows his song list and made his audience Happy by singing his song called,”Money.” Peter had money flowing all around up and down unbelievable green funds floating in this video on stage. Finally, Peter Frampton called his “Opening Act” Buddy Guy back on stage to close his 100 minutes set out with a song called, Weep. Those two gentlemen weep all of their Fans with their living proof, massive super humans guitar skills comparable to 1900s Leadbelly, Blind Lemon Jefferson, and Lonnie Johnson Folk Music Concerts. By Fire Chief Sam Digiovanna California Grape Crush and Crash Comes Early - Wine Awareness Month is September! It appears the California Grape Crush came crashing in a bit before the scheduled time and un-expectantly for the Napa wine region. On the eve of the 2014 harvest, Napa Valley wineries were rocked by a 6.1-magnitude earthquake in the early hours of Sunday morning. The quake injured over 100 people, but fortunately claimed no lives said Fire Chief Sam DiGiovanna. Napa’s Resiliency is to be commended. However, a good reminder for all of us to be prepared… coincidentally; September is National Wine Awareness

Month, and wine has become so vital to California, that it deserves a whole month. There’s a lot of talk on the health benefits of wine, but before you crack open that bottle and toast your good health, here is what the experts say. Is wine fattening? Actually, researchers say they’ve found a compound in red wine and grapes that block immature fat cells’ ability to develop and grow. “I’m not sure I buy that says Chief DiGiovanna. My fat cells seem to be maturing! There’s research on the heart health benefits of a daily glass (or two) of red wine, as they say wine lowers blood pressure. Who the heck checks their blood pressure when drinking wine?” The Greek physician Hippocrates considered wine a part of a healthy diet, and advocated its use as a disinfectant for wounds. I just have friends who are Hypocrites and need disinfecting. Some studies suggest that grape juice may provide some of the same heart benefits of red wine, including reducing the risk of blood clots, reducing

so-called bad cholesterol, and preventing damage to blood vessels in the heart. “Hmmm… Grape juice or wine? That’s easy!” One thing is important Always Drink Responsibly! Our hearts go out to all of our friends in Napa who were recently ravaged by the earthquake. We also know times like these bring people together. It’s that ‘kind’ part of ‘humankind.’ Maybe we can support them by buying a bottle or two of your favorite Napa wine… Consider our friends in Napa want us to be prepared so visit: http://lafd.org/eqbook. pdf or contact your local fire department.

VASquEz TRiAL SET Continued from Page 1 Before he handed down his ruling, Stafford said that to impeach Scott because of her conviction, there had to be evidence she was lying, ``but the thing is, everything she testified about is documented in writing.’’ The judge said everything Scott testified about was corroborated by two other witnesses at the grand jury hearing. Scott’s federal conviction ``does not in any way negate the probable cause finding of the guilt of Mr. Vasquez,’’ Stafford said. The charges against Vasquez, 59, involve the alleged misuse of public funds provided by a Cathedral City program that loans money to city employees and council members to buy desktop computers, laptops or tablets, according to the District Attorney’s Office. Loans are made at 6 percent interest, and employees can pay for equipment through payroll deductions. Employees get an invoice or price quote from a vendor and are then given a city check to use for the purchase, District Attorney’s spokesman John Hall has said. The prosecution alleges that from August 2011 through

December 2012, Vasquez ``did not properly use the program and instead misappropriated city funds for personal purchases,’’ Hall said. The councilman allegedly used part of the funds for computer purchases and part for unauthorized personal items. In December 2012, Vasquez was given a city credit card so he could buy a laptop and a tablet, but he allegedly used it to buy more than $2,000 in prepaid MasterCard gift cards. “On previous occasions, Vasquez submitted fraudulent invoices under the loan program and then used the loan proceeds to purchase unapproved personal items in addition to some computer equipment,” Hall alleged. An affidavit alleges Vasquez twice returned a computer or equipment and bought lowerpriced personal items, pocketing the difference. Vasquez, who was elected in 2005, is reportedly planning to run for reelection. He is free on a $50,000 bond and faces up to six years behind bars if convicted. Source: KMIR

Why WOMEN Show Less Confidence when Investing Women’s pursuit of perfection is the most crippling way they sabotage their own confidence. We set the bar impossibly high, so we inevitably feel inadequate, and we avoid taking action until we feel we’re better informed, more than prepared and better qualified than anyone else. As we wish to receive approval from men, we watch our male coworkers lean in, while we hold back until we believe we’re perfectly ready. This is the reason why even educated women are so unsure By Janice Gough of their money mastery. Women Confidence is the belief that never claim their competence you can accomplish the task until they know everything, you have in mind. while men are willing to “ wing it.” Women, not only wish to understand it all, but, also, do not like being fooled by others. Success correlates more closely with confidence than it does with competence. In other words, even a Ph.D. from the world’s best business school won’t get you far if you aren’t confident. tend to slow down decision making in the female brain. In particular, while testosterone— the primary male hormone— promotes competitiveness, risktaking and demonstrations of power, women’s larger supply of estrogen fosters social skills, bonding and avoidance of risk and conflict. Simply put, women are genetically programmed not to take chances that might create dissension or put them in danger. A further complication is women’s greater proportion of brain “white matter,” essential for integrating information. Men have more “gray matter,” useful for tackling isolated problems. While both men and women have the same primitive fear centers, men’s brains tend to activate the one associated with taking action while women rely more on the one involving thought processes. In essence, when a man may take a leap of faith, a woman may still be evaluating the options.

One other key difference is that women’s brains produce 52 per cent less serotonin than men do. The relative shortage of this hormone leads women to be more anxious and worryprone. Along with the discovery, that lack of confidence is partly genetic, there’s a lot we can do about it, even late in life, to change our confidence level. The cornerstone for women is learning to risk and fail, and jettisoning our perfectionism. A lot of it comes down to take action, doing the thing that’s a little hard for you and going outside your comfort zone.

Granted, women’s greater cautiousness can be an advantage in the financial world. Studies have found that female hedge fund managers earned triple the return of their male counterparts over the past five years, while female investors often do better than men because they’re less susceptible to the thrill of frequent trading. Women’s instinct for caution is valuable, but being able to take decisions and move on is critical to an investor. Women need to find a balance between our natural caution, and knowing when to make decisions quickly. Women are wired for over-thinking and incorporating this with investing; it can cause them not to take action. Women’s lack of confidence is due to “a cocktail of lots of different things” besides perfectionism. One of the key ingredients is geneticsinfluenced brain chemistry. Hormones and neural activity

By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Mr. Richardson, I very much enjoy your column. Can you recommend a source for a proxy form which is valid under California law for an HOA board of directors recall election, and if successful, for the election of new board members. Thank you, D.Q., Santee Dear D.Q.: There is no official form for a proxy. Under Civil Code 5130, only a member can hold another member’s proxy, and the proxy must state the intention to grant voting rights to another member of the association. A proxy can be written on a scrap of paper, and still be valid. A proxy to be used on a recall vote must state that purpose, under Corporations Code 7613(g). Proxies, due to the very minimal requirements, are often abused, and Inspectors of Election have few validation tools short of calling each proxy giver to confirm the validity of each one. With the 30 day advance written ballot process, proxies are unnecessary – members can vote for themselves.

Dear Kelly: I am on the board of a small HOA -- there are only 12 units. I read your column each week, and find the questions/answers very helpful. I have a question that I have not seen addressed in previous columns. I know that a super majority is no longer needed to pass a special assessment. I also understand that you can accomplish this either by mail-in ballot or at a meeting called for that purpose. My question: If a majority of homeowners (in our

Dear D.S.: Not having the opportunity to review your governing documents, I am assuming that they do not specifically answer this question. Under Civil Code 5605(b), a special assessment in a total amount of more than 5% of the HOA’s annual budgeted total expenses requires approval by a vote of a majority of a quorum of the members. Section (c) of the same section defines “quorum” as more than 50% of the members, so at least 7 of your 12 members would need to be voting upon the assessment issue. What if 2 members abstained, 3 voted yes and 2 voted no? Civil Code 4070 answers this question, by

Apple to Turn Newest iPhone into Mobile Wallet

The new iPhone will simplify mobile payment by including a special near-field communication chip, Bloomberg reports citing an unnamed source familiar with the situation. Along with a fingerprint recognition reader the Touch ID technology will allow consumers to securely pay for items in a store with their finger. Software giants like Google have already tried to implement payment technology into smartphones to make in-store payments, but US retailers were slow to adopt the idea. However if Apple introduces the technology in its devices the situation could change as the iPhone maker has the largest market share in the US, says Ben Bajarin, an analyst for Creative Strategies LLC in San Jose. By Desert Star Staff the world’s largest payment mobile wallet on the next iPhone “Love it or hate, Apple drives Apple has reportedly systems - Visa, MasterCard and model due to be unveiled on a lot of standards in the industry, reached an agreement with American Express to introduce a September 9. Bajarin told Bloomberg. “They

are the mover in these markets. When they do something, the industry seems to follow. The creation of a mobile wallet will add another element to Apple’s ecosystem thus increasing more loyalty to the brand, he explained. Currently iTunes has an estimated 800 million accounts worldwide that generate revenue through Apple’s marketplace. If Apple implements mobile wallet technology, that could open up new possibilities for the company as a marketing platform by generating advertising revenue from consumer brands willing to attract shoppers while in a store. Apple could get up to $300 a year per user from advertising if the mobile wallet application is used frequently, Bloomberg cites the Crone Consulting LLC, a firm which advises retailers and banks on mobile payment solutions.

Atlantic City’s Revel Starts Cosing After 2 Years

By WAYNE PARRY Associated Press ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) The most spectacular and costly failure in Atlantic City’s 36-year history of casino gambling began to play out Monday when the $2.4 billion Revel Casino Hotel emptied its hotel. Its casino will close early Tuesday morning. Revel is shutting down a little over two years after opening with high hopes of revitalizing Atlantic City’s struggling gambling market. But mired in its second bankruptcy in two years, Revel has been unable to find anyone willing to buy the property and keep it open as a casino. It has never turned a profit. “It’s kind of sad, said

Andrew Tannenbaum of Edison, who has stayed at Revel a dozen times in the past year. “Compared to other casinos, this was a lot nicer. There wasn’t the riff-raff here. But I think they overspent, went overboard and got in over their heads. When the Borgata opened, that should have been the last of the highend casinos for Atlantic City. Revel will be the second of three Atlantic City casinos to close in a two-week span. The Showboat Casino Hotel closed its doors Sunday, and Trump Plaza is closing Sept. 16. So what killed Revel? Analysts and competitors say it was hampered by bad business decisions and a fundamental misunderstanding

of the Atlantic City casino customer. “The timing of it could not have been worse, said Mark Juliano, president of Sands Bethlehem in Pennsylvania and the former CEO of Trump Entertainment Resorts in Atlantic City. “The financial climate while Revel was developing and when it opened were completely different. Revel officials declined to comment. The casino broke ground just before the Great Recession. It ran out of money halfway through construction and had to drop its plans for a second hotel tower while scrambling for the remaining $1 billion or so it needed to finish the project. When it opened in April 2012, it was so laden with debt that it couldn’t bring in enough revenue to cover it. The idea behind Revel was to open a totally different resort, a seaside pleasure palace that just happened to have a casino as one of its features. That

included Atlantic City’s only total smoking ban, which alienated many gamblers; the lack of a buffet and daily bus trips to and from the casino; and the absence of a players’ club. By the time those decisions were reversed, it was already too late. High room and restaurant prices hurt, too. “If there had been a range of new attractions and potential customers with enough discretionary income, I think that Atlantic City could have absorbed the new capacity, said David Schwartz, director of the Center for Gaming Research at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. “That’s certainly what happened with Borgata more than 10 years ago. But the market that Revel foresaw for its property just didn’t materialize, partially because of the growing perception that the city wasn’t ready for that kind of customer. At the same time, Revel didn’t have a plan to successfully market to the traditional Atlantic City customer.

It also started at a huge disadvantage by not having a pre-existing database of gamblers to solicit, in the way that casinos owned by nationwide companies like Caesars Entertainment or Tropicana Entertainment can. Customers found Revel’s design off-putting as well, said Joe Lupo, senior vice president of the Borgata, whose upscale market Revel appeared to target. Entering from the Boardwalk, they had to take a vertiginous escalator up four flights to reach the casino floor. Once there, the property wound around a circular pattern instead of the linear layout of most other casinos. “Revel struggled with the execution of plans to develop their market, as well as with their design and just a basic understanding of the Atlantic City visitor, he said. Revel still hopes to find a buyer for the property after it has ceased to operate as a casino. Source KMIR

Does The CIA Know About UFO’s? By Art Kunkin Mr. Life Extension In last week’s edition of this newspaper, we began a report about a Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) briefing of then U.S. President Ronald Reagan about unidentified flying objects (UFO’s). This briefing took place on March 5 to 8, 1981. The 19 page summary of this briefing is now available on the Internet along with a statement that the summary had a top-secret classification for the obligatory 25 years until released by the CIA. We believe this summary to be a true report, not a fictional document. The briefing was conducted by CIA Director William Casey and an unidentified CIA employee who was the caretaker of above top-secret CIA documents about the aliens. To preserve clarity, we begin by reprinting a portion of last week’s article here. CARETAKER: “The United States of America has been visited by ExtraTerrestrial visitors since 1947. We have proof of that. However, we also have some proof that Earth has been visited for many thousands of years by various races of ExtraTerrestrial visitors...” “In July 1947, a remarkable event occurred in New Mexico. During a storm, two ET spacecraft crashed. One crashed southwest of Corona, New Mexico and one crashed near Datil, New Mexico. The U.S. Army eventually found both sites and recovered all the debris and one live Alien. I’ll refer to this live Alien as ‘EBE 1.’... EBE means ‘Extraterrestrial Biological

Entity.’ It was a code designated to this creature by the U.S. Army back in those days...” “PRESIDENT REAGAN: Can we classify them? I mean, can we...well, connect them with anything earthly? “The CARETAKER: No, Mr. President. They don’t have any similar characteristics of a human with the exception of their eyes, ears and a mouth....Their blood wasn’t red, and their brain was entirely different from human...” “EBE did explain where he lives in the universe. We call this star system Zeta Reticuli, which is about 40 light-years from Earth. EBE’s planet was within this star system...It took the EBE spaceship nine (9) of our months to travel the 38.42 light years... Their spaceships can travel through a form of ‘space tunnel’ that gets them from point ‘A’ to point ‘B’ without having to travel at the speed of light...” “The project was originally established in the early 1950’s, first by President Truman and then by order of President Eisenhower, under control of the National Security Council (NSC).” “TheUnited States felt relatively sure the aliens exploration of Earth was nonaggressive and non-hostile. It was also established that the aliens’ presence does not directly threaten the security of the United States...It was estimated that the alien’s technology was many thousands of years ahead of ours.” PRESIDENT REAGAN: “Can you tell me how many different species have visited us.”

The CARETAKER: At least five (5)...Mr. President, the five species are called Ebens, Archoloids, Quadloids, Heplaloids and Trantaloids...The Ebens are friendly, the Trantaloids are the dangerous ones. (See: Http:www.serpo.org/release 23.php).” Editor’s Note: This Internet reference was in the original summary. “ADVISER #1: Well, Mr. President, the hostile aliens species is responsible for abducting some humans. We can clearly prove some 80 Americans were abducted from about 1955 until the present, the last known one in July of last year (1980)...” “PRESIDENTREAGAN: How many other Presidents received this briefing.” “The C A R E TA K E R : Mr. President, I have briefed President Nixon, Ford and you. President Carter was never given the entire briefing...” “When EBE was alive, he showed us two devices. One was a communication system and the other was an energy device...After EBE died, we were able to send transmissions... We finally received a startling message from the Ebens. They wanted to visit Earth, retrieve their spacemen bodies and meet with Earthlings...After a long series of messages, it was determined the Ebens would land on Earth on Friday, April 24, 1964... “Several months into the planning, President Kennedy decided to approve a plan to exchange a special military team. (http://www.serpo. org). However, during this time

period, President Kennedy died... President Johnson continued the program...Finally; in 1965, the Ebens landed and we exchanged 12 of our men for one of theirs... Our team of 12 went to the Eben planet for 13 years...Eight returned in 1978. Two died on the planet, and two decided to stay...” “PRESIDENT REAGAN: OK, Well, I think that is enough for one day. Bill, set something up for tomorrow to finish this...I want to thank everyone for a very thorough briefing. I will have a different attitude every time I look up in the sky.” The tape ends here. However, the Internet summary of the briefing has a “button” at its end to click for more information. I refer readers who want more information about the CIA report cited here to that button. There was no discussion in the briefing summary available to us of what was learned on the Eben planet by the 12 humans sent there. This writer will continue searching for this information and write about this in future issues of this newspaper. ___________________________ Art Kunkin is the 86 year young journalist who published and edited the alternative weekly newspaper The Los Angeles Free Press starting in 1964, later becoming president of the Philosophical Research Society. David Muir Takes Over at ABCs ‘World News’

(AP Photo/ABC, Ida Mae Astute, file). In this Wed., Aug. 27, 2014 photo provided by ABC, Diane Sawyer, left, signs off on her last broadcast as anchor of “World News,” with new anchor, David Muir, right, looking on in New York. By DAVID BAUDER AP Television Writer NEW YORK (AP) - Among the stories David Muir will introduce during his first week as ABCs “World News” anchor is one he reported about a generation of Syrian refugees missing out on an education. Besides detailing a hidden aspect of the civil war, the story serves a dual purpose: to signal viewers - and his bosses - that Muir wants to get out of the office for work as much as he can. “A huge part of this for me was a promise that I was not going to be tethered to the anchor desk,” said Muir, who officially replaces Diane Sawyer Monday night. Muir, 40, joins NBC “Nightly News” anchor Brian Williams and Scott Pelley of the “CBS Evening News” at

one of the three jobs generally considered the pinnacle of American broadcast news. Muir is also a generation younger than the 55-year-old Williams and Pelley, 57. Already a familiar face as “World News” weekend anchor and Sawyer’s sub on weeknights; Muir has groomed himself for the job since he was a child. As a latchkey child of divorced parents growing up near Syracuse, N.Y., Muir took comfort from the news “family” that appeared on his television each evening. He watched ABC’s Peter Jennings, trying to guess who would be named “person of the week.” At age 12, he wrote to Syracuse anchorman Ron Curtis for advice on how to get in the business and had an internship at WTVH-TV by the next summer.

Muir became so familiar that the newsroom had a spot on the wall to mark how much he’d grown each year. When he was still at nearby Ithaca College, WTVH hired Muir to anchor the weekend news. After five years at WTVH, he moved on to Boston and, in 2003, came to ABC News. Hurricane Katrina was one of the first places his work attracted attention. “All the elements of being a news anchor he does superbly,” said David Westin, the ABC News president who hired Muir. He shows versatility in reporting, interviewing and working in the studio, he said. Network anchors traveling to stories used to be more commonplace, and when Westin appointed Bob Woodruff and Elizabeth Vargas to replace Jennings a decade ago, it was on the

theory that at least one would be on the road regularly. It has become less frequent, in part due to costs. Muir considers the reporting an important part of his identity, and he believes, what viewers expect of him. “The evening news is evolving rapidly, and I think we have to be extraordinarily nimble,” he said. The dinnertime newscasts have been shadowed by predictions of their demise for about as long as Muir has been working. But each has seen its viewership increase over the past year. Muir, who frequently tweets during commercial breaks, said the programs’ abilities, to sum up, the day’s most important stories is valuable at a time people are bombarded with information. Andrew Tyndall, a consultant that monitors the content of evening newscasts, said, “World News” tends to be faster-paced with a higher story count when Muir is anchor. Muir resists the notion that he packs the broadcast with more material, but said he wants to keep some things’ short so more important stories have room to breathe. Muir will start “World News” with a brand new executive producer, Almin Karamehmedovic, who he said shares “a thirst to travel the world.” It’s difficult to judge at the start where a fresh anchor will take a broadcast. Westin likened it to a president

appointing a new Supreme Court justice - the person may not turn out as liberal or conservative as was initially thought. Tyndall’s name was mud at ABC because of a report last winter criticizing the “Disneyfication” of “World News,” specifically a greater emphasis on consumer and entertainment news at the expense of global concerns. “When I see reports like that or words like that, I think of the moment when I’m standing in Tahrir Square with a producer and photographer, and Mubarak’s men come charging in on their horses with their whips,” Muir said. “Or when we were in Mogadishu and were fired upon by forces linked to Al Qaida.” He added, “I’d be very hard-pressed to tell them that what we’re doing out there is ‘soft.’” Muir’s role will be slightly different than that of his predecessor; ABC said. George Stephanopoulos will be the network’s main anchor on breaking news reports. Muir said that was fine, and it ties into his desire not to always be desk bound. He recently unearthed the letter that the Syracuse anchorman sent back to the advice-seeking 12-year-old, which today sounds prescient. “Competition in television news is keen,” Curtis wrote. “There’s always room for the right person. It could be you.” Source: KMIR

Inquiries Begin into Nude Celebrity Photo Leaks

By Anthony McCartney AP Entertainment Writer LOS ANGELES (AP) The FBI said Monday it was addressing allegations that online accounts of several celebrities, including Oscarwinner Jennifer Lawrence, had been hacked, leading to the posting of their nude photographs online. The agency did not say what actions it was taking to investigate who was responsible for posting naked photos of Lawrence and other stars. Apple said Monday it was looking into whether its online photo-sharing service had been hacked to obtain the intimate images. Lawrence, a threetime Oscar nominee who won for her role in “Silver Linings Playbook,” contacted authorities after the images began appearing Sunday. Naked images purporting to be of other female stars

were also posted, although the authenticity of many couldn’t be confirmed. The source of the leak was unclear. “This is a flagrant violation of privacy,” Lawrence’s publicist Liz Mahoney wrote in a statement. “The authorities have been contacted and will prosecute anyone who posts the stolen photos of Jennifer Lawrence.” The FBI said it was “aware of the allegations concerning computer intrusions and the unlawful release of material involving high profile individuals, and is addressing the matter.” “Any further comment would be inappropriate at this time,” spokeswoman Laura Eimiller wrote in a statement. Apple Inc. spokeswoman Natalie Kerris said the company was investigating whether any iCloud accounts had been tampered with, but she did not give any further details. “We take user privacy

very seriously and are actively investigating this report,” she said. Actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead also confirmed that nude photos of her were posted online. “To those of you looking at photos I took with my husband years ago in the privacy of our home, hope you feel great about yourselves,” Winstead posted on Twitter. Winstead, who starred in “Final Destination 3” and “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter,” wrote that she thought the images had been destroyed. “Knowing those photos were deleted long ago, I can only imagine the creepy effort that went into this,” Winstead wrote. The FBI has investigated previous leaks of nude celebrity images, including leaks involving Scarlett Johansson, Mila Kunis, Christina Aguilera and footage of television sports

reporter Erin Andrews in a Tennessee hotel room. Those cases resulted in convictions. How widespread the hacking of celebrities photos was is not immediately clear. Some of the images were quickly denounced as fakes. Some cybersecurity experts speculated that hackers may have obtained a cache of private celebrity images by exploiting weaknesses in an online image-storing platform. “It is important for celebrities and the general public to remember that images and data no longer just reside on the device that captured it,” security researcher Ken Westin wrote in a blog post Monday. “Once images and other data are uploaded to the cloud, it becomes much more difficult to control who has access to it, even if we think it is private.” Private information and images of celebrities are frequent targets for hackers.

Last year, a site posted credit reports, Social Security numbers and other financial info on celebrities, including Jay Z and his wife Beyonce, Mel Gibson, Ashton Kutcher and many others. Johansson, Kunis and Aguilera were hacked by a Florida man, Christopher Chaney, who used publicly available information to hack into the email accounts of more than 50 people in the entertainment industry. “I have been truly humiliated and embarrassed,” Johansson said in a tearful videotaped statement played in court at Chaney’s sentencing in December 2012. “That feeling of security can never be given back and there is no compensation that can restore the feeling one has from such a large invasion of privacy,” Aguilera wrote in a statement before Chaney’s sentencing. By Desert Star Staff The head of the Centers for Disease Control in the United States warned this week that the situation in west Africa remains grim following the deaths of more than 1,500 people due to the Ebola virus. “I wish I didn’t have to say this, but it is going get worse before it gets better,” CDC Director Dr. Tom Frieden told the Associated Press this week upon completion of a trip to Liberia — one of four west African countries where the fatal disease continues to claim lives amidst one of the worst outbreaks ever of its kind. The situation there “is overwhelming,” Dr. Frieden told National Public Radio in an interview from Monrovia, Liberia earlier this week, where he said the outbreak “really is a crisis and is affecting most if not all

the counties in Liberia already.” T h e Wo r l d H e a l t h Organization said on Thursday this week that upwards of 20,000 others may become afflicted with the disease before it can properly be controlled, and officials say that 1,552 people have died so far just in the countries of Guinea, Sierra Leona, Nigeria and Liberia since March, according to the New York Times. “This is not only an Ebola outbreak — it is a humanitarian emergency, and it needs a fullscale humanitarian response,” Lindis Hurum, the emergency coordinator in Monrovia for Doctors Without Borders, said in the statement this week. According to the WHO, “more than 40 percent of the total number of cases have occurred within the past 21 days,” however, and “most

cases are concentrated in only a few localities.” Two American aid workers contracted the virus this summer while on assignment in west Africa, but have since recovered after being treated and released at a hospital in the US. Doctors lack a cure for the disease, though, and its contagious nature has created a situation that officials fear will only worsen. Speaking to NPR, Frieden called the current outbreak “unprecedented” and that

cases “are increasing at an extremely quick rate.” The CDC, Frieden added, “is working flat out on this, but this is huge and needs a global response. ... They need a lot of help from the world.” “This is very alarming,” he said. “It’s even worse than I’d feared,” he told CNN on Wednesday. Frieden’s remarks came this week upon news that Dr. Sahr Rogers, a high profile Ebola doctor from Sierra Leone, died there while treating

other patients suffering from the disease. His passing marks the third time this outbreak that a top specialist has died from Ebola, and the WHO believes that more than 120 health workers in all have died so far in the four affected countries, according to Time. That same organization believes that there are only two doctors per 100,000 people in all of Sierra Leone, where officials declared a state of emergency due to the outbreak in late July.

Art from the Heart of Athens, Graffiti Style by Anthony Grant When the desert heat gets to be too much, you need to find a break and what better than a big city drenched in culture by the sea? Enter Athens, the city of democracy, souvlaki and an idiosyncratic art inspired hotel, the Pallas Athena. Athens is best explored by booking a flight to London, Paris or Frankfurt, and from there, flying to Athen’s sleek airport on Aegean Airlines, a Star Alliance member and one of Europe’s most highly rated regional airlines. Athen’s has a history stretching back more than 5,000 years, and you get a sense of that the moment you set your eyes on the Acropolis, crowned by the Parthenon, the city’s eternal centerpiece. Finding the right hotel is essential, and for art fans, it is the Pallas Athena, in a modern

part of the city, near city hall. This location puts you within walking distance of a majority of the most historic sites. An avant garde boutique hotel opened less than a year ago; it is all about art the moment you cross the threshold. A dramatic storation has unveiled an elegant, refined hotel with noble lines and the look of an aristocratic residence. You won’t see a jam-packed tourist bus delivering guests here. This is opposite of the cookie-cutter hotels where the same dreary art hangs over the TV and mini bar. Each of the Athena Pallas 63 guest-rooms, most suites are individually designed for guests seeking exclusive accommodations to match their exacting standards. That is why there are requests for their sought after ‘graffiti’ guest-

rooms. Local artists were part of this design project. If you’re a Batman or Spiderman fan, you’ll find these caricatures fairly jumping off the walls here. The Pallas Athena is a childfriendly hotel with enchanting and unpredictable graffiti. The range of spacious family-style accommodations, including fairytale graffiti decorated suites make a stay in Greece’s capital fun for everyone. Several guestrooms feature an unexpected accent piece, an image of a friendly hippo! Impressive works of art and designer furnishing throughout the common areas and suites add an element of surprise; each room becomes a small private galley, “yours” for a few days. The first floor dining room

and lounge bar are a magnet for locals, where new and intrepid concepts are discussed and debated. The menu features interpretations of Greek flavors, particularly those from Crete. The hotel owners have a farm in Crete and have created an exclusive line of olive oil soaps, and other unique products sourced from here. ‘Guardians’ tops Labor Day, Summer Box Office By Sandy Cohen AP Entertainment Writer LOS ANGELES (AP) - The intergalactic misfits of “Guardians of the Galaxy” are the summer’s box-office superheroes. Marvel’s cosmic romp topped the Labor Day box office with a three-day take of $22 million - its third time in first place since its release five weeks ago, according to studio estimates Monday. With North American ticket sales of more than $280 million so far, “Guardians” is also the summer’s - and the year’s - top-grossing film to date domestically. Still, summer box-office totals are down almost 15 percent from last year, said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for box-office tracker Rentrak. “This is the lowest summer since 2006 in terms of revenue,” he said. “Before ‘Guardians,’ we were sitting on a 20 percent deficit compared to last year.” “Transformers: Age of Extinction,” which opened in late June, also boosted the summer

box office with $1 billion in global ticket sales. “Maleficent” was another hit, bringing in more than $230 million domestically. “This was never expected to be a record-breaking summer,” Dergarabedian said, “but it maybe came in under expectations.” The World Cup may have distracted moviegoers, he said. Also, the death of Paul Walker caused the seventh installment of “Fast & Furious” - which might have added around $200 million to the summer box office - to be postponed until next year. Last summer broke boxoffice records with the success of “Iron Man 3,” ‘’Star Trek,” ‘’The Heat” and “Despicable Me 2.” Next summer is expected to make history again with hotly anticipated releases including “Star Wars,” ‘’Avengers: Age of Ultron” and Pixar’s “Inside Out.” “Summer of 2014 is a transitional summer between two record-breaking years,” Dergarabedian said. The top movies over the lackluster Labor Day holiday

Missing Pit Bull Puppy Found Safe in Cat City By KMIR News Staff CATHEDRAL CITY, Ca. - We first reported yesterday about a Pit Bull Puppy stolen from the Palm Springs Animal Shelter. Today, we learned the puppy was found safe late last night at a residence in Cathedral City. Cathedral City Police Department put out this press

release this afternoon: On August 28th, 2014, at about 1130 hrs, CCPD Officers responded to the 68100 block of Estio Road, Cathedral City, regarding information that was received about a stolen dog from the Palm Springs Animal Shelter. Officers went to the residence and knocked on the

front door. As contact was made with the occupants inside, a Pit bull dog, who matched the description of “Puppy,” was seen inside. The occupants of the residence were detained pending the subsequent theft investigation. Staff members from the Palm Springs Animal Shelter were contacted who responded

with a Micro Chip reader to confirm the dog was in fact “Puppy.” After staff arrived, the dog was scanned and confirmed to be “Bunny.” Richard Lee Whitehead, 49 years old, resident of Cathedral City was taken into custody for possession of the stolen dog and an outstanding warrant. He was later transported to

the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility in Banning, Ca. “Puppy” was returned to Palm Springs Animal Shelter and appeared to be happy and healthy. We request anyone with information regarding this case to contact the Cathedral City Police Department at (760)7700300. Source KMIR

More Customers Come Forward About ‘Missing’ Jewelry want it back, that’s all I want. I just want my jewelry back,” says Jerome Anifson of Thousand Palms. He describes a ruby and diamond necklace he had on consignment at the store before it closed unexpectedly in April. He’s not the only customer upset about his high-end jewelry that went missing. “I’d either like to have the jewelry back because it was a gift from my husband or I’d like to have the money,” says Madge Shellenberger of Palm Desert. Since the store’s owner, Vincent Harold, died in April, customers are saying they’re getting the runaround from Harold’s daughter, who’s listed as the person for customers to contact. “I was shocked. I couldn’t believe it. I went away and came back two or three days and on the window there was a telephone number to call,” says Anifson. By Gitzel Puente Manufacturing Jewelers are story first aired one week ago. retrieve their jewelry, but they haven’t been successful. “I haven’t been able to get a hold of her since July the third,” says Anifson. They’re left with no leads, and the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department says this is a civil matter. Shellenberger says she already started a small claims lawsuit for her necklace, bracelet and earrings set worth about $3,000; however, she doesn’t know who to sue in this case. Is it Harold’s daughter who is listed outside the storefront window or another entity? We asked the District Attorney’s office what people can do now who feel their jewelry has been wrongfully taken. The District Attorney’s office suggests visiting their website on consumer fraud or special prosecutions to file a complaint. Additionally, if a person needs a private attorney to get legal advice, he or she can contact the Desert Bar Association. Source KMIR www.desertstarweekly.com

‘Blended,’ ‘For No Good Reason’ and More!

I am not always a fan of Adam Sandler’s comedies, but “Blended” was a pleasant surprise. Yes, there are some crude and stupid moments, but overall “Blended” is a sweet family comedy that emphasizes the importance of a mom and dad in a warmly blended family. Today couples divorce or lose a beloved spouse and feel they will never love again. This is the setup for “Blended” which couples these two ideas into one madcap comedy starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore. In fact, this comedy marks their third comedy pairing. Previously, they starred in “50 Blind Dates” and “The Wedding Singer.” This time Sandler is a widower with three daughters and Barrymore is a divorced mom with two sons. One boy never wants mom to marry again, unless it’s with their dad. The younger son is prone to temper tantrums, especially during Little League games where he constantly strikes out. The film begins as Sandler and Barrymore meet for a blind date at Hooters. It definitely not love at first sight. In fact, the date is a total disaster, and they never want to see each other again. Of course, fate intervenes and they meet once again on several occasions. Each encounter is equally unpleasant for them. Eventually, they both make arrangements, separately without one another’s knowledge, to purchase a trip to Africa from a mutual acquaintance who suddenly can’t go and needs to sell his tickets for seven, or he will lose the purchase price. When each family arrives at the elegant, upscale African resort, they soon discover they will be sharing the same suite of rooms, whether they like it or not. Both Sandler and Barrymore love their kids, so they decide to give their children a great holiday. As a result the two blind daters www.desertstarweekly.com

that can’t stand one another discovered they have one very important thing in common—their great love for their kids. “Blended” focuses on the importance of family ties, but does so without ever becoming preachy. As the story develops Sandler provides a father image for Barrymore’s two unruly, rambunctious boys and she in turn gives insights on what to wear for his daughters who dress like tomboys in clothes their dad brings home from his job at a major sporting goods store. In fact, Adam loves sports so much he even named his youngest daughter Espn after the popular sports network. And his late wife loved him so much she let him do it. Besides the blending and bonding, viewers get the chance to share in their African vacation as they go parasailing over herds of elephants or encounter rhinos and lions from a truck on safari. The DVD also offers bonus features about baby animals, parasailing and more. “Blended,” from Warner Bros. is rated PG-13 for some crude and sexual content and language.

In my youth I was an art major, but I must confess I never heard of Ralph Steadman, a noted cartoonist in the ‘70s who worked with gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson. ( A crazy thought suggested by my husband, is that where the Muppet Gonzo got his name?) In fact, many people never heard of Ralph Steadman either, so British director Charlie Paul set out to make a documentary about the artist and for a period of 15 years, Paul left a camera over Steadman’s work area to order to record the cartoonist at work. And while many critics consider Steadman a cartoonist, director

Paul ‘s fascinating documentary paints a cinematic portrait of the man as a true artist who chronicled the troubled political times in which he lived with wit and amazing imagery. In the documentary, Johnny Depp also spends quite a bit of time with the artist, watching him at work. They both share a common connection, their working relationship with writer Hunter S. Thompson. The film sheds light on the tumultuous era of the ‘70s and chronicles the art of Steadman whose work appeared on the cover of “Rolling Stone” and graced many other publications as well. One of my personal favorite creations, which he paints on the screen, is his portrait of his beautiful black lab, Beanie who patently posed for his master. Also appearing in the documentary is film-maker Terry Gilliam, writer Hunter S. Thompson, Jann Wenner of “Rolling Stone,” Johnny Depp and the director Charlie Paul. Bonus features include commentary with the director, Charlie Paul, and producer Lucy Paul, and a Toronto Film Festival Q & A session. From Sony Pictures, rated R for language, some drug content and sexual images.

Also available on DVD: “Moms’ Night Out,” a family comedy starring Sarah Drew, Sean Astin and the mom on TVs “The Middle,” Patricia Heaton, is about a group of lady friends who go out for three hours of grownup talk and a nice dinner. To do this, they leave their kids with the dads. What could go wrong? Plenty. Rated PG For vampire fanciers who also like a touch of romance, there’s “Only Lovers Left Alive” starring Tilda Swinton, Tom Huddleston and John Hurt. Rated R September 3, 2014

Super Supergroup, Touching Tributes Required Listening The self-titled tribute LP from The Empty Hearts, and moving tributes to the late JJ Cale and The Call’s Michael Been are worth adding to any discerning music fan’s library. Artist: The Empty Hearts Title: The Empty Hearts (429 Records) You might like if you enjoy: The Romantics, The Cars, The Byrds Tell me more: Boasting a lineup of founding members from The Cars (guitarist Elliot Easton), Blondie (drummer Clem Burke), The Romantics (lead singer Wally Palmer) and Chesterfield Kings (bassist Andy Babiuk), the Empty Hearts are clearly more than a supergroup. From hard charging power-pop (“90 Miles An Hour Down a Dead End Street,” “(I See) No Way Out”) to rollicking garage-rock gems (“Soul Deep,”

“Perfect World”) to wistful ballads (the Americana-styled “Fill An Empty Heart” recalls Chris Isaak’s best work while “I Found You Again” could fit alongside the classics on the Byrds’ “Sweetheart of the Rodeo”); the Empty Hearts impress on their eponymous debut. One of the modern rock’s most creative fret masters it’s great to hear Easton’s work all over the place on this disc, notably on the bluesy ‘70s-styled rocker, “I Don’t Want Your Love, (If You Don’t Want Me)” and the spirited rocker “Loud And Clear.” Information: TheEmptyHearts.com. Artist: Eric Clapton & Friends Title: The Breeze: An Appreciation of JJ Cale (Bushbranch Records / Surfdog Records) You might like if you

enjoy: Eric Clapton, John Mayer, Mark Knopfler Tell me more: Eric Clapton and a group of illustrious pals have teamed up for a heartfelt tribute to the late singersongwriter JJ Cale, a master craftsman who produced a mere 15 albums over a 40-year recording career. “The Breeze: An Appreciation of JJ Cale” casts a welcome spotlight on the work of Cale, who died in July 2013. The cast of players who join Slowhand on the 13-track collection includes not only fellow guitar greats John Mayer, Mark Knopfler, Derek Trucks, Albert Lee and David Lindley, but a strong rhythm section in bassist Nathan East and drummer Jim Keltner. Highlights on this terrific disc include the gentle “Call Me The Breeze” (featuring Clapton on vocals and guitar), haunting

“Someday” (with Knopfler on guitar and lead vocals), and soulful blues standout “Lies” (featuring Clapton and Mayer on vocals and guitars). Information: EricClapton.com. Artist: The Call (featuring Robert Levon Been of B.R.M.C.) Title: A Tribute to Michael Been (Label Records/ Lightyear/Caroline) You might like if you enjoy: The Call, Simple Minds, the Alarm Tell me more: The Call were one of rock’s most unlikely success stories of the 1980s. In an era defined by hard-rock hair bands and trendy NewWave MTV-minded outfits, The Call crafted heartfelt and genredefying rock that mattered. Like U2 and the Alarm, there was a palpable power in the Santa

Cruz, CA-bred outfit that has proven to be timeless. When lead singer-bassist Michael Been passed away from a heart attack while working backstage with his son Robert Levon Been’s band Black Rebel Motorcycle Club (B.R.M.C.) in 2010, it seemed to forever end chances of The Call performing again. Fast-forward to April 2013, when Robert Levon Been honored his father by joining forces with The Call’s guitarist Tom Ferrier, keyboardist Jim Goodwin and drummer Scott Musick at The Troubador in Los Angeles. Released on a 2-disc CD/DVD deluxe package capturing the memorable concert, the 14-song collection is highlighted by performances of the evocative “I Still Believe,” melancholic “I Don’t Wanna” and stirring “Let the Day Begin.” Information: The-Call-Band.com.

Paris Hilton’s Brother Injured in Weekend Crash

On I-10 near Date Palm, Hilton’s BMW struck a Volkswagen Beetle when he tried to change lanes, causing the Beetle to spin and stop in the median, the CHP reported. Hilton also lost control of his car, which crashed into the rear of a tractor-trailer, then veered off the road and onto the dirt shoulder, according to the CHP’s collision report. Firefighters had to cut Hilton out of the mangled vehicle, and he was transported to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs with major injuries. However, published reports since the accident indicates his injuries were minor.

49er Ray McDonald Accused of Domestic Violence By KMIR News Staff SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) San Francisco 49ers defensive tackle Ray McDonald was arrested early Sunday on felony domestic violence charges after officers responded to a home in an upscale neighborhood, San Jose police said. Sgt. Heather Randol, a police spokeswoman, declined to discuss the circumstances that led to McDonald’s arrest, saying only that officers had probable cause to take him into custody. McDonald, 29, was later released from Santa Clara County Jail after posting $25,000 bail. He wouldn’t discuss what happened with television news reporters who approached him after he posted bail. “I can’t say too much, not right now, but the truth will come out. Everybody knows the kind of person that I am,” McDonald said. “I’m a goodhearted person.” NFL Commissioner Roger

Goodell announced tougher penalties this past week for players accused of domestic violence. The move followed scrutiny over Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice’s twogame penalty stemming from his arrest on an assault charge in February. “The 49ers organization is aware of the recent reports regarding Ray McDonald and we take such matters seriously,” general manager Trent Baalke said in a statement. “As we continue to gather the facts, we will reserve further comment.” McDonald has been playing for San Francisco since he was drafted as a third-round pick in 2007. The incident is the latest blow to what has been one of the NFL’s fiercest defenses. On Friday, linebacker Aldon Smith received a nine-game suspension for what the league called violations of its substance-abuse and personalconduct policies. Source KMIR

Golden Boy Oscar De La Hoya Live, at Fantasy Springs

Special Treat As De La Hoya Is Set To Be The Special Vip Guest In Indio.

By Desert Star Staff LOS ANGELES - FOX Sports 1 and FOX Deportes will return to Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, Calif. on Thursday, October 9, as the latest edition of Golden Boy Live! features unbeaten local favorites Ronny Rios and Antonio “Relentless” Orozco in separate bouts in their toughest matchups to date. In the 10-round junior lightweight main event, Santa Ana’s Ronny Rios puts his perfect 23-0 record on the line against previous WBC Silver Featherweight Champion Robinson “Robin Hood” Castellanos. Plus, undefeated welterweight Antonio Orozco of San Diego meets to meet former World Champion Steve “2Pound” Forbes in the 10-round co-main event. In addition, in action will be an unbeaten phenom Diego De La Hoya that will make his fourth appearance in Indio in a six round opening televised fight against an opponent to be announced and visiting Fantasy Springs Resort Casino as the special VIP guest to meet and greet fans will be International Boxing Hall of Famer, president and founder of Golden Boy Promotions, Oscar De La Hoya. “It’s always an exciting night when we can put on an event at Fantasy Springs and this will be no exception,” said Oscar De La Hoya. “Ronny Rios and Antonio Orozco are two of this area’re most talented fighters, and we’ll see if they’re ready for

the next level on October 9. I’m also looking forward to seeing the new De La Hoya era take charge with my cousin Diego in the ring again and meeting everyone on fight night and talking about this great sport and what we can do to make it even better.” Rios vs. Castellanos, a 10-round junior lightweight bout, is presented by Golden Boy Promotions and sponsored by Corona Extra, O’Reilly Auto Parts and Golden Ram Group. The FOX Sports 1 and FOX Deportes broadcast airs live at 10:00 p.m. ET/7:00 p.m. PT. Tickets, priced at $25, $35 and $45, will go on sale TOMORROW, Friday, August 29 at 10:00 a.m. PT and will be available for purchase at the Fantasy Springs Box Office, by calling (800)827-2946 or online at www.fantasyspringsresort. com. Santa Ana’s Ronny Rios (23-0, 10 KOs) can do it all in the ring, and that ability has led him to an undefeated record in one of boxing’s toughest divisions. A standout amateur that transitioned smoothly to the pro game, the 24-year-old began making big moves in 2013, starting with his defeat of the former world champion Rico Ramos for the NABF title. Since then, Rios has added three more wins, most recently defeating Andrew Cancio in April. Celaya Guanajuato, Mexico’s Robinson Castellanos’ (19-10, 12 KOs) record can

be deceiving as the 12-year professional hit a late stride in his career. The 32-year-old had a rough start but has now bounced back and won 11 of his last 12 bouts, including victories against Celestino Caballero and Derrick Wilson. Well deserving of the nickname “Relentless,” Antonio Orozco (20-0, 15 KOs) of Tecate, Baja California Mexico, who presently lives and trains out of San Diego, is a fearsome force in the ring, and he’s prepared to make his move toward a world title shot in 2015. With 2014 victories over veterans Miguel Angel Huerta and Martin Honorio, the 26-year-old knows another notable victory against Steve Forbes will help him make his case for a shot at the division’s elite. A seasoned veteran whose world championship experience has earned him respect throughout the boxing world, former Junior Lightweight World Champion Steve Forbes (35-13, 11 KOs) believes that at age 37, he still has another title run left in him. Hailing from Los Angeles, Forbes has been in with the best of the best over the years, including Oscar De La Hoya, Andre Berto, Cornelius Bundrage, Carlos Hernandez and John Brown. On October 9, he aims to use his experience to hand the younger Orozco his first loss in Indio. Just 20-yearsold, Mexicali’s Diego De La Hoya (6-0, 5 KOs), who will be fighting an opponent to be determined, has made remarkable progress September 3, 2014

since turning professional in September of 2012. Unbeaten in four 2014 bouts, “The Golden Kid” is coming off of a fifth-round technical knockout over Miguel Tamayo in his Las Vegas debut in July. Ebola in mind, US Colleges Screen some Students By Carolyn Thompson Associated Press BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) College students from West Africa may be subject to extra health checks when they arrive to study in the United States as administrators try to insulate campuses from the worst Ebola outbreak in history. With the virus continuing to kill in Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Nigeria, the expected arrival of thousands of students from those countries has U.S. authorities on alert but cautioning against alarm. “I can see why there would be concern; there’s no vaccine for it,” said Fatima Nor, an 18-year-old freshman at the University at Buffalo, where about 25 students from Nigeria are enrolled for fall. But she said knowing that the virus is transmitted strictly through direct contact with bodily fluids of sick people, and not by sitting next to someone in class, should be enough to calm nerves. “As long as everyone keeps their personal space, it should be OK,” said Nor, of Buffalo. While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have issued no specific recommendations for colleges, some state health departments, including in South Carolina and North Dakota, have spelled out for administrators what symptoms to look for and how to react. Elsewhere, universities are drafting their own precautionary plans against the often-fatal hemorrhagic fever, which causes weakness, vomiting, diarrhea, internal bleeding and

sometimes bleeding from the nose and ears. The American College Health Association recommends its members update emergency plans, find out where patients have traveled and use isolation exam rooms when available. Several colleges are checking the temperatures of students arriving from affected countries and continuing to monitor for fever until any risk of contagion has passed. “I don’t see this as a huge threat on college campuses,” said Dr. Susan Even, student health director at the University of Missouri-Columbia and a member of the ACHA, “but it makes sense when you’re communicating with students ... to ask a question or two.” U.S. universities count 9,728 active students from Nigeria, 204 from Liberia, 169 from Sierra Leone and 95 students from Guinea, according to the federal government. The odds they could bring Ebola to campus seemed too small to worry Laura Washburn, a senior at Tufts University outside Boston. “It’s not like I’m not going to class because someone has been to Africa,” she said. “I mean, it’s hard to say how paranoid we should be about it, but I feel pretty safe at Tufts.” The roughly 30 Nigerian students expected at the University of Illinois will be pulled aside for a temperature check and private Ebola discussion when they arrive at the health center for mandatory immunization paperwork and tuberculosis screening, said

(AP Photo/Michael Conroy). Dr. Dr. Robert Palinkas, the center’s director. The plans have been reassuring to the handful of parents who have called wondering whether their child’s placement with a West African roommate should give them reason to worry, he said. “Parents are comforted to know that there is a screening process, that we are alert for it, that we are prepared for it,” Palinkas said, “and that we’re doing everything we can without infringing on the rights of anybody to make sure their son or daughter is going to have the lowest risk possible.” Similar screenings are planned at the University at Buffalo, Mercer University in Georgia, Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia, and the University of Akron in

Ohio, the campuses said. Moses Ogunseye arrived from Lagos, Nigeria, a little over two weeks ago to study at Akron. The 31-year-old graduate student said he spent a few minutes filling out a questionnaire and was given a disposable thermometer to monitor himself for fever for a couple of weeks, something he doesn’t mind doing even though he is certain he hasn’t been exposed to Ebola. “I would expect that. It’s a very logical thing to do,” he said of the screening, which, though voluntary, is encouraged. Alma Olson, director of Student Health Services at the university, said students are being asked to keep tabs on their temperature for up to 21 days, the length of time it can take for symptoms of Ebola to

appear following exposure. “At the end of the 21-day period they’ll come back and we’ll check them and send them on their way,” Olson said. The CDC requires that any potential Ebola patient be isolated and public health professionals notified. “There’s such a low level of worry” because Ebola doesn’t spread easily, she said, “but we really have to be on top of any communicable disease.” Universities in the United Kingdom also are on alert with the expected arrival of thousands of Nigerian students there. Universities UK, which represents universities, has circulated guidance from Public Health England advising administrators on how to recognize and react to possible cases. Source KMIR

US Open Scene: Azarenka’s ‘Happy Birthday’ Wish

spectators, who responded with cheers. The interviewer, though, tried to get Azarenka to speak about her next opponent. After a perfunctory answer, Azarenka returned to her quest, urging fans to “sing with me.” Some obliged, accompanying Azarenka’s wavering, often off-key, version of the familiar tune. Asked at her news conference whether she heard anything from Monfils about the song, Azarenka said he texted her “that he loves me very much.” Then she paused, slammed her hands on the desk in front of her and clarified, “Not in that way.” - By Howard Fendrich, http:// twitter.com/HowardFendrich DUCK!: Jo-Wilfried Tsonga insists he didn’t whiff on a serve, as much as it looked that way. the ninth-seeded Frenchman tossed the ball in the air, started to go into his motion - then ducked. Tsonga explained later that a giant bug landed on the brim of his cap, blocking his view of the ball, which wound up glancing off his head on the way down. Tsonga pulled off his hat and shook it, then rubbed his hair to make sure no insects were on him. He argued with the chair umpire that the awkward motion shouldn’t have counted as a first serve because he didn’t swing his racket - though he did appear to swing even if he was more focused on ducking out of the way. That wound up being moot when Tsonga went on to win the point to finish the game. He would lose the fourth-round match to the eighth-seeded Murray, 7-5, 7-5, 6-4. - By Rachel Cohen - www. twitter.com/RachelCohenAP

YES TO THE DRESS: Tip for Serena Williams fans: It pays to wear her signature dress to her matches. Williams, the No. 1-ranked woman, has turned heads with her dress selection for the U.S. Open: a pink, leopardprint model accented by a pink headband and white, leopard-skin wristband. After her straight-set win over Kaia Kanepi on Monday to reach the quarterfinals, she spotted a fan wearing the same outfit and rewarded her with a souvenir tennis ball. “She had on my outfit. I was like, ‘She should definitely get a ball,’” Williams said. Of course, there are no guarantees multiple fans won’t try the same thing. “I saw a couple people with my outfit on,” she said. “But she was the one who got it.” - By James Martinez - www. twitter.com/jfmartinez. in the world after annihilating the Blackhawks 42-17 in the second round of the 2013. This year, from the start of the teams’ season opener to the end, the Blackhawks let the Patriots know they were not going to get pushed around. The whole game was back and forth, but the deciding play in the game came after a dramatic fourth-down, 34-yard run from Blackhawks senior running back Chris Rom-Turibio that cut the Patriots lead to one, 27-26. With 6:18 left in the game, instead of playing it safe and going for the PAT (point after touchdown), head coach Dan Armstrong elected to go for the two-point conversion, which was stuffed before reaching the goal line. One more set of downs provided a possible comeback scenario, but Heritage’s defense stopped the Blackhawks on fourth down, and never relinquished possession. The game ended 27-26, but as Coach Armstrong mentioned to his team after the game, “it’s not where we are now, it’s where we are in November.” “We were one and two in the division last year,” Coach Armstrong said. “This was our first game. I knew this game would be difficult. Guys are still getting used to their roles, but I like how we played overall.” Blackhawk’s junior Quarterback Michael Avina will not have to get used to his role, as he will be featured in this year’s offense doubly without last year’s DVL player of the year, running back Vincent Guzman. Avina threw for 155 yards on 1114 passing and no interceptions, including a late-game six-yard touchdown pass to Charles

Hays. “Avina played great, and so did Turibio, Coach Armstrong said. “We will try to be a little more balanced offensively this year. Every year you have to make adjustments and without Guzman, we’re going to have to throw the ball a little more.” Turibio also had a respectable first game as lead back for La Quinta. Including punching in two touchdowns, Turbo ended the opener with 135 yards rushing on 27 attempts. Despite the Blackhawks solid running game, the Patriots won that category decisively, finishing with 330 yards on the ground. Not only did Heritages running to back had a decent game, Quarterback Bret Virgil ran all over the field, collecting 141 rushing yards of his own. “We will work on a few things before we see Eisenhower, Coach Armstrong said. “We’ll send more linebackers at their quarterback next week. (Virgil) had all day to do what he wanted, and it really hurt us.” The Blackhawks played a tremendous game against the toughest team on the 2014 schedule. If there is another reason to be optimistic, but for some untimely penalties, Armstrong’s squad played a fundamentally-sound game, only getting flagged five times to the Patriots’ 17. In another rematch from last year, the Blackhawks travel to Rialto to take on the Eisenhower High School Eagles (0-0 in Citrus Belt League, 1-0 Overall). In 2013, the Blackhawks defeated the Eagles 24-21. The game starts at 7 pm. For more, follow Dan on Twitter @Dsmarine7.

By KMIR News Staff PALM SPRINGS -- The Riverside County Coroner has identified the victims of the grisly double fatal traffic accident that happened early Sunday morning in Palm Springs. Osvaldo Ramirez, 21, of Cathedral City, and Tierra Reagins, 18, of Palm Springs died in the crash that severed the car in half. It happened on Gene Autry Trail at the Northeast corner of Tachevah Drive at 3:12 a.m. The driver was taken to the hospital with major injuries,

and a passenger in the vehicle suffered moderate injuries. Palm Springs Police say it appears the driver lost control of the car, and struck the traffic signal pole.
