FACTS, HISTORY, CURRENT OPERATIONS Cherry Creek Ranch ("CCR" or “Ranch”) was purchased by Derby Smith Partners in 1986, with additions in 1989 and 2007. Presently, the Ranch consists almost uniquely of a contiguous block of deeded property, and is one of the largest ranches in the region. It has also been called the prettiest ranch in Oregon. The Ranch includes a combination of attractive range, timber and river front land located in Central Oregon. It is a 2 hour drive from Bend, Oregon (pop 89,000), a resort town which is home of Mt. Bachelor Ski Resort and over 25 golf courses miles of hiking, mountain biking and paddling trails. The Ranch is 1.5 hours from Redmond Airport, with direct flights from most major Western cities. Like Bend and Redmond, the Ranch has 320 days of sunshine per year. Ownership of the Ranch is held by the Kennedy and Smith families. Present operations are focused upon recreation (including hunting, fishing and bird watching). Arrangements with a tenant have been in place for 5 years. The tenant has the primary responsibility to establish a permanent presence at the Ranch, maintaining oversight and to keep visitors from trespassing; he also implements maintenance as required and oversees improvements as requested by the owners, while raising pure bred Charolais bulls, making use of the irrigation and pasture available at CCR. Presently the tenant occupies the main ranch house, and has access to barn and corrals. Maintaining the privacy of ownership has always been a priority that has been successful over the span of 30 years. Description of the land, including water, lakes Cherry Creek Ranch is comprised of 28,274 contiguous deeded acres including 375 acres of water right, of which approximately 150 acres are under wheel line. The balance of the water right is flood irrigated. Cherry Creek Ranch begins with 1.5 miles of John Day River frontage at about 1400 feet above sea level at the north end of the ranch and rises to the south over a distance of 14 miles to 5200 feet at the top of Tracy Mountain. The John Day River originates in the Eastern slopes of the Blue Mountains and runs 284 miles to its confluence with the Columbia River. The John Day River is a Wild and Scenic Waterway, undammed along its entire length and the third longest free-flowing river in the United States. The country consists of a combination of steep and broken land into which numerous spring-fed drainages feed the Cherry Creek watershed, as well as rolling hills suitable for grazing (and even rock formations with Native American paintings). Cherry Creek itself runs from south to north along the length of the ranch, for approximately 17 miles (as the creek runs).
In addition to native grasses, vegetation is mostly juniper and sage. There are occasional timbered pockets of pine and fir trees at the higher elevations. The sprinkler-irrigated ground is located along the John Day River and the balance of the flood-irrigated land is located right along the length of Cherry Creek itself, wherever slope and soil allow. Near the top of the drainage there is the six acre Cherry Creek Reservoir. Description of the hunting and fishing Cherry Creek Ranch was assembled from many properties during the 1940s and 1950s by Forest Solomon. Forest was a legend in his own time, and was particularly passionate about hunting, especially for mule deer. He assembled the Ranch primarily to hunt for big game and birds. During the mule deer heyday in the 70’s and early 80’s Cherry Creek was local legend for its mule deer. Since that time the entire Oregon deer herd has declined somewhat, but Cherry Creek remains among the best mule deer hunting in the area. Coincident with the decline of the mule deer herd, a large increase in the size of the elk herd has been observed. Cherry Creek Ranch boasts some of the best bull elk hunting in Central Oregon. During the early season herds of elk make use of the irrigated ground at the low end of the Ranch and during the late season the big bulls pull away from the pressure of the rut and public lands and seek refuge in the upper reaches of the Ranch. Most of the recreation income for Cherry Creek is derived from the elk hunting. Antelope, bear and cougar also populate the ranch, along with an occasional feral pig. Bird populations are cyclical, but Cherry Creek Ranch maintains a steady population of quail. Chukar partridge populations are currently on the rebound and the chukar hunting on the Ranch can be among the best anywhere. Doves, ducks and geese are seasonally abundant. A pheasant 'preserve' permit can be obtained from the State of Oregon allowing the hunting of augmented populations of upland species from August through March. The Ranch’s stretch of the John Day River is a renowned small-mouth bass fishery and boasts some very good fall and winter steelhead runs. It was recently discovered that the native runs of Chinook Salmon are returning to the river. Channel catfish are available as well. One can fish from the beach on the river, accessible by land only from the Ranch, or wade into the river for fishing and swimming. The Cherry Creek reservoir is a renowned location for its’ stocked rainbow trout, where dozens can be caught in an afternoon.
Area Description To the North West lies the 50,000 acre Washington Family Ranch (Dennis Washington) which has been donated to a charity in which he is actively involved, Young Life. Young Life operates a series of seasonal youth camps. Directly North of Cherry Creek, separated by the John Day River, lies the Pine Creek Ranch, owned by the Confederated Tribe of the Warm Springs, which is maintained as a no-traffic area. To the East lies some smaller private neighbors and the Pat's Cabin Wilderness Study Area (no motorized traffic). The neighbor to the South East is Terry Long who purchased the land (known as "the Fitzgerald") from current ownership. Directly to the South are smaller neighbors and the USFS. To the South West and West is the Stephenson Mountain Tract (16,000 acres now owned by the Wilks Brothers) and some smaller neighbors including the Shrum family from Prineville, Oregon.
