Edito r’s View Dear Readers, Coronavirus is clearly here to stay. As we close this issue, we have gotten the news that President Trump and the First Lady tested positive for COVID-19. I wish them both a speedy recovery. Many of us are eager to move on with and live life as we used to, but we have gotten some reminders lately that we should continue social distancing and wearing masks to protect ourselves and others. This issue we are honored to continue to highlight the many accomplishments of our community. A strong work ethic and commitment to lifelong learning has become a hallmark of South Asians living around the world. Indian Americans continue to thrive in many different fields, and this issue features a profile of Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and its holding company Alphabet Inc. Read the article to learn more about Pichai’s journey to becoming an influential force in the tech world. The 2020 Forbes 400 list of the top 400 annual earners includes seven Indian Americans, while the TIME magazine list of 100 Most Influential People of 2020 includes five prominent names. From Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Wayfair’s Niraj Shah to Workday’s Aneel Bhursi and Professor Ravindra Gupta, both lists highlight the incredible contributions Indians and Indian Americans have made to developments in medicine, technology, global development and more. We can’t wait to watch these lists over the years to come to see even more of our community members being increasingly valued for important contributions. Don’t miss both articles to learn more about these incredible individuals. George Soros is a force in a different way. Whether you agree with his many controversial actions or not, he is a character that needs to be further analyzed. This issue includes an article “George Soros: Is He a Threat for India?,” which delves into the many ways Soros exerts his influence in India through his Open Society Foundation and so covert acts. Things are not always what they seem, and the role Soros plays in India’s development is one of which we should be skeptical. We all know how important nutrition is even if we don’t want to follow any kind of healthy diets! It is always tempting to eat foods that we love sometimes especially because they are not good for us in any way except for the taste. This month, the article “Good nutrition contributes to keeping COVID-19 away” discusses the benefits of adding a variety of fruits, vegetables, and nutritious foods to your diet so that your immune system functions the way it should when attacked by disease or illness. Contributor Chahna Tailor also shares her Ayurvedic expertise on why room temperature water is best for drinking. Read her article “Ice is not that nice!” to be persuaded to change your water drinking habits. Aruna and I along with the Desh-Videsh Media Group team congratulate the Tampa, Miami, and South Florida chapters of the Akshaya Patra Foundation for a successful virtual gala! Held on Saturday, September 22, the Families for Change virtual gala raised a total of $500,000 exceeding their goal! We commend their efforts for the worthy cause of providing school children meals in India. You all know this is my favorite time of year - Navratri is around the corner to be followed by Diwali. While it may not look like a festival season we are used to, let’s keep the spirit of the holidays in mind. Social distancing cannot stop us from honoring the Devis. And you know, garba can be done anywhere, even from the comfort of your own home! We look forward to a time when we can all get together and celebrate our culture and traditions together, but until that time, we wish you a festive holiday season! Happy Reading! ndian American Sundar Pichai, who first began his career as a materials engineer and is now the CEO of both Google, Inc. and its holding company, Alphabet Inc., earned a place on TIME magazine’s list of 100 Most Influential People of 2020. Pichai was born in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, and grew up in Ashok Nagar, Chennai, with his family. He then attended the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur. Pichai earned his MS from Stanford University, and then attended the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School for his MBA. Before joining Google, Pichai worked at Applied Materials and consulting firm
McKinsey & Company. Along the way, Pichai moved to the United States in 1993. He later married Anjali, whom he met while they were both students at IIT. The two have a son and a daughter, and now reside in California. Pichai joined Google in 2004 as the head of product management and development. Reportedly, Pichai was pursued by Twitter in 2011 and considered for the CEO position at Microsoft in 2014, but in the end, he remained with Google. In 2014, Pichai negotiated Google’s $3.2 billion deal to acquire Nest Labs. In 2015, Google cofounders Larry Page and Sergey Brin announced the creation of Alphabet Inc., a holding company
of Google. Looking at Pichai’s technical and business development skills, it was no surprise that he was named CEO of Google. In December 2019, he was named CEO of Alphabet, replacing Larry Page. Larry Page speaks very highly of Pichai. When announcing Pichai’s promotion, Page said, “Sundar has a tremendous ability to see what’s ahead and mobilize teams around the super important stuff.” He added, “We very much see eye-to-eye when it comes to product, which makes him the perfect fit for this role.” Pichai’s stint as CEO of Google has brought about overwhelming success for the company, bringing stock prices up by 76%. Until August 2015, Google was run by its co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin and supported by former CEO Eric Schmidt. Pichai was a trusted member of the Google Leadership Team, and he went on to become an advisor to Page and Brin. Recently, Pichai earned a spot on the list of the 100 Most Influential People of 2020, announced by TIME magazine. Jamie Dimon, chairman and CEO of JPMorgan Chase, writes Pichai’s “analytical, humble and inclusive leadership will

position Google to meet the moment. These are traits the world could use a lot more of in these times.” He added that Pichai’s unique story “represents the best of what we aspire for our society.” Pichai is well-known for his strong work ethic along with his natural talent, both of which helped his rise through the ranks of Google eventually leading him to take the reins of the company. Pichai was always well-liked as a leader at Google and more focused on results instead of standing out. That “substance over over style” attitude attracted attention as he rose through the ranks, and as CEO, his popularity soared. One Google employee said, “He is literally worshipped inside Google. Engineers love him. Product Managers love him. Business people love him.”

As an Indian American, Pichai made his community very proud when President Donald Trump named him as one among six Indian American corporate leaders to seek as the “brightest” and the “smartest” to seek advice from on how to get the US economy back on track after the unprecedented hit sustained due to the coronavirus pandemic.
to work with people who make you feel insecure about yourself. That way, you will constantly keep pushing your limits.” While on a tour to India, veteran reporter Harsha Bhogle conducted a Q&A session with students at a Delhi University. Bhogle said, “You’ve done what everyone has dreamed of doing.” After living in the US for over 27 years and becoming CEO of one of the most powerful companies in the world, Pichai has not forgotten his roots in India. He remembers his early years in India and once said, “Every evening we were drawn to the television by Doordarshan’s special rendition of Sare Jahan Se Accha. Today, I’m excited to announce the Google for India Digitization Fund. Through this effort, we will invest $10 billion into India over the next 5-7 years. We’ll do this through a mix of equity investments, partnerships, and operational, 24
A classic example of a middle class boy rising through the ranks, Sundar Pichai has done so through his innovative ideas and hard work. At every turn in his life, he has inspired millions by exhibiting qualities of a great leader despite his own set of challenges.

Making India Great: The Promise of a Reluctant Global Power by Dr. Aparna Pande
I
ndia will be the world›s most populous country by 2024 and its third largest economy by 2028. But the size of our population and a sense of historical greatness alone are insufficient to guarantee we will fulfil our ambition to become a global power. Our approach to realize this vision needs more than just planning for economic growth. It requires a shift in attitudes.
In Making India Great, Aparna Pande examines the challenges we face in the areas of social, economic, military and foreign policy and strategy. She points to the dichotomy that lies at the heart of the nation: our belief in becoming a global power and the reluctance to implement policies and take actions that would help us achieve that goal. New India holds all the promise of greatness many of its citizens dream of. Can it become a reality? The book delves into this question Dr Aparna Pande is Research Fellow and Director of Hudson Institute’s Initiative on the Future of India and South Asia. Dr. Pande wrote her PhD dissertation on Pakistan’s foreign policy. 40

New India: Reclaiming the Lost Glory by Dr. Arvind Panagariya
W
ith GDP having touched $2.6 trillion, India is poised to become the world’s third-largest economy in less than a decade. In doing so, it will have moved one step closer to reclaiming its pre-1820s glory, when it accounted for onesixth of global output and ranked second in economic size. This rapid movement in the absolute size of the economy will be insufficient, however, to bring prosperity to India’s vast population. Today, 44 percent of the countr y’s workforce remains in agriculture and another 42 percent in tiny enterprises with fewer than twenty workers. Labor productivity of both sets of workers remains low, and they live overwhelmingly on subsistence-level incomes. This book lays down a concise road map of reforms that would help transform the country and create well-paid jobs in industry and services for those with limited or no skills. It argues t h at c reat i o n of g o o d j o b s req u i re s t h e emergence of medium and large enterprises in industry and services, especially laborintensive sectors such as apparel, footwear, and other light manufactures. India needs policies conducive to the growth of firms from small to medium, from medium to large, and from large to larger still. They must compete in the global marketplace to help increase India’s share in the world export market from less than 2 percent currently to 5 to 6 percent in a decade. Such policies include greater outward orientation; more flexible markets in land, labor, and capital; a concerted effort to improve the quality of higher education; faster urbanization; and improved governance at all levels. Dr Arvind Panagariya is an Indian-American economist and a professor of economics at Columbia University, who served as first vice-chairman of the government of India think-tank NITI Aayog between January 2015 and August 2017.

But, there’s a good reason for it! In Ayurvedic medicine, the Sanskrit word for digestive fire is agni. Our digestive fire metabolizes and converts the food that we eat into energy. If our agni is not working effectively, then we start to see disorder in the digestive system and even other areas of the body. But, just focusing on digestion, if our agni tends to be working slower than usual, we will be faced with a sluggish metabolism.

Cold water is a big contributor. When we drink cold water, it requires a lot of our energy to bring the temperature back up. In science, we talk about how coldness can constrict the flow of nutrients and blood through the body. That is why you will see a lack of circulation in cold areas. Warmth promotes circulation and encourages movement and stimulation. When it comes to cold water and our agni, it is like throwing water on a fire - it extinguishes it. In Ayurveda, like increases like. So, if you want to stimulate good digestion and fire up your agni (pun intended!), you should drink warm (to hot) water. Even right before a meal, just a small sip of warm water can jump start the digestion
process and increase your ability to metabolize what you eat. It can be difficult to implement this. I mean, who wants to drink warm water when the weather is so hot or when we’ve just finished exercising? If you cannot take warm or hot water, even room temperature water is better than cold water. You can always add cooling elements to it by adding mint leaves, cucumbers, and/or lime. Or make yourself a room temperature tea with hibiscus flowers, chamomile, or licorice! It takes a little time to get used to it, but it is possible. I’ve started doing it and have even converted my cold-waterloving dad!

In our own time, perhaps the greatest embodiment of this Asuric or demonic trait is the person of the 89-year-old George Soros who is commonly described as a philanthropist. We fail to understand the meaning of the word “philanthropy” when it’s applied to a wealthy person who arrogates to himself the right to destabilize and destroy nations based on incurable and extreme megalomania justified as a crusade against “nationalism” or other pretext. It is the philanthropy that funds cultural and civilizational genocide while wearing a tuxedo of good intentions.
George Soros: Is He a Threat to India? By Sandeep Balakrishna and Raj Shah
Newest Face of an Old Phenomenon
Thank You, George Soros
But then, George Soros is not just a person. He is the 21st century avatar of a phenomenon that India is sickeningly familiar with but has apparently learned nothing from - western colonialism wearing masks of business, capitalism, wealth-creation, reform, and benevolence leading to long-term enslavement and wholesale cultural decimation.
Some of the members of the NGOs that he patronized must have ideally been in prison. However, the fact that they are still strutting around with impunity, challenging the sovereign might of the Indian state on a daily basis only shows the frightening extent to which their tentacles have spread in almost all areas. Doubly frightening is the fact that these tentacles have gripped our national institutions: the higher levels of bureaucracy, judiciary, academia, and obviously, the media. One might perhaps feel a sliver of relief at how they have largely not impacted the proverbial unwashed masses that continue to attend the Kumbh and other local festivals. However, even they will not remain unharmed if the Soroses of the world are not checked urgently.
Well-recorded historical fact is that the vile nature of British colonialism was also largely sustained by an influential section of Indians who preferred to trade Bharatavarsha itself than live as free Indians. As we note, the same phenomenon is at work even today vis a vis George Soros. Speaking purely in the context of India, his close ties with the Democratic Party in the United States is what enabled George Soros to massively expand his footprint in India during the Obama Presidency. It also helped that during the same period, India had a Government by, for, and of anti-India NGOs whose furtive writ superseded that of the Indian Prime Minister.
Indian Connection In 2013, Soros started his business venture in India through the Aspada Investment Company. This initiative was fundamentally an Indian investment initiative aimed at building an investment platform for those businesses that wished to provide a better livelihood for people. The company was directly funded by Soros’ Economic Development Fund.
However, one must also be thankful to George Soros for finally being frank about his Indiawrecking agenda in his speech at Davos in February 2020. He said, “Nationalism, far from being reversed, made further headway. The biggest and most frightening setback occurred in India where a democratically elected Narendra Modi is creating a Hindu nationalist state, imposing punitive measures on Kashmir, a semiautonomous Muslim region, and threatening to deprive millions of Muslims of their citizenship.” This is his coming-out-of-the-closet moment as the real face of the proxy war far deadlier than the one waged by Pakistan.
Later during the Obama regime, Soros’ foundation gained further stronghold in the country and since then it has been his constant endeavor to interlope in internal affairs of the nation through the vast and interconnected network of organizations funded by him. These organizations actually dance to the tune of Soros and play a crucial role in manipulating the original narrative in order to take the help of the judiciary and media. Their every move is driven by the purpose of hindering the national interest. 50

Soros Adds Fuel to Fire in Delhi Riots In his February 2020 Davos speech, George Soros criticized Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in no subtle terms. Modi’s steps towards revised citizenship norms were highly censured by him. Soros even went on to pledge a billion dollars for a university network in order to mar the spread of nationalism worldwide. Harsh Mander, former member of the National Advisory Council (NAC) along with Sonia
Gandhi, railed against the courts, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the CAA. Mander also happens to be a member of Soros’s Open Society Foundations (OSF). Furthermore, Mander has been a popular name with respect to other forms of unrest in the Indian capital. One of his other foundations also backed the Shaheen Bagh protests along with other anti-Modi voices on several antiCAA forums like the ones at Jamia Milia, JNU and elsewhere. The day after Soros delivered his speech riots and mayhem broke out in northeast Delhi.

Should India Be Worried?
George Soros has been involved in acts where he has openly meddled with the internal affairs of a country by investing his money behind such negative propaganda and creating a situation of unrest and instability therein. All these attempts work towards his ultimate goal of “establishing a new world order” without nationalism. India has all the reasons to be concerned and alarmed with Soros declaring an open war against nationalism. Although the number of people and organizations in India under Soros and his foundation’s influence is very high, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been aware of these motives and has been trying his best to banish such negative elements. However, the nation still needs to be worried as there are still umpteen scopes in the country for them to create further chaos and turmoil. To cite an example of what will occur in India if Soros is not taken seriously, we can note the important fact that his own country of birth, Hungary, has declared him an enemy of the state, and in 2018, its government prepared a three-part plan titled Stop Soros Package. And it’s not just limited to Hungary. Wherever George Soros has gone, he has created and nurtured a sprawling and thriving NGO industry: most notably, almost all Central and Eastern European (the former Soviet Bloc) countries have 56
passed stringent laws either banning or strictly monitoring his NGOs. Ukraine presents another notable case. Soros was declared the second most influential person in the country after its President, and in 2016, the Obama Government ordered the Ukranian Government to stop its investigations into his NGO, Anti-Corruption Action Centre (AntAC), which funded street protests by students against the Government. More dangerously, George Soros has funded a range of separatist movements for example, in Kosovo. The list is nearly endless but fairly representative of the mortal danger Soros poses to any country. It is clear that Soros has followed all of the aforementioned strategies with respect to India: his latest tirade against Prime Minister Modi over the “autonomy” of Kashmir follows the same script vis a vis Kosovo. Then we’ve already seen the network of breaking-India NGOs and individuals he continues to fund.

Good nutrition contributes to keeping COVID-19 and other diseases away By Dr.Grayson Jaggers
T
he connection between the pandemic and our dietary habits is undeniable. The stress of isolation coupled with a struggling economy has caused many of us to seek comfort with our old friends: Big Mac, Tom Collins, Ben and Jerry. Overindulging in this kind of food and drink might not just be affecting your waistline, but could also potentially put you at greater risk of illness by hindering your immune system.
When the emphasis is on weight loss products, and not healthy day-to-day eating, the essential role that nutrition plays in keeping us healthy never gets communicated. Among the many things I teach students in my nutritional biochemistry course is the clear relationship between a balanced diet and a strong, well-regulated immune system.
Along with social distancing measures and effective vaccines, a healthy immune system is our best defense against coronavirus infection. To keep it that way, proper nutrition is an absolute must. Although not a replacement for medicine, good nutrition can work synergistically with medicine to improve vaccine effectiveness, reduce the
Hear the word “nutrition,” and often what comes to mind are fad diets, juice “cleanses” and supplements. Americans certainly seem concerned with their weight; 45 million of us spend US$33 billion annually on weight loss products. But one in five Americans consumes nearly no vegetables – less than one serving per day. 60

prevalence of chronic disease and lower the burden on the health care system.
Impact of a Western diet Scientists know that people with preexisting health conditions are at greater risk for severe COVID-19 infections. That includes those with diabetes, obesity, and kidney, lung or cardiovascular disease. Many of these conditions are linked to a dysfunctional immune system. Patients with cardiovascular or metabolic disease have a delayed immune response, giving viral invaders a head start. When that happens, the body reacts with a more intense inflammatory response, and healthy tissues are damaged along with the virus. It’s not yet clear how much this damage factors into the increased mortality rate, but it is a factor. What does this have to do with nutrition? The Western diet typically has a high proportion of red meat, saturated fat and what’s known as “bliss point foods” rich in sugar and salt. Adequate fruit and vegetable consumption is missing. Despite the abundance of calories that often accompanies the Western diet, many Americans don’t consume nearly enough of the essential nutrients our bodies need to function properly, including vitamins A, C and D, and the minerals iron and potassium. And that, at least in part, causes a dysfunctional immune system: too few vitamins and OCTOBER 2020 - WWW.DESHVIDESH.COM

minerals, and too many empty calories. A healthy immune system responds quickly to limit or prevent infection, but it also promptly “turns down the dial” to avoid damaging the cells of the body. Sugar disrupts this balance. A high proportion of refined sugar in the diet can cause chronic, low-grade inflammation in addition to diabetes and obesity. Essentially, that “dial” is never turned all the way off. While inflammation is a natural part of the immune response, it can be harmful when it’s constantly active. Indeed, obesity is itself characterized by chronic, lowgrade inflammation and a dysregulated immune response. And research shows that vaccines may be less effective in obese people. The same applies to those who regularly drink too much alcohol.
How nutrients help Nutrients, essential substances that help us grow 62
properly and remain healthy, help maintain the immune system. In contrast to the delayed responses associated with malnutrition, vitamin A fights against multiple infectious diseases, including measles. Along with vitamin D, it regulates the immune system and helps to prevent its overactivation. Vitamin C, an antioxidant, protects us from the injury caused by free radicals.
how to eat better from an early age. Nutrition education should be emphasized, from kindergarten through high school to medical schools. Millions of Americans live in food deserts, having limited access to healthy foods. In these circumstances, education must be paired with increased access. These long-term goals could bring profound returns with a relatively small investment.
Polyphenols, a wide-ranging group of molecules found in all plants, also have antiinflammatory properties. There’s plenty of evidence to show a diet rich in plant polyphenols can lower the risk of chronic conditions, like hypertension, insulin insensitivity and cardiovascular disease.
In the meantime, all of us can take small steps to incrementally improve our own dietary habits. I’m not suggesting we stop eating cake, french fries and soda completely. But we as a society have yet to realize the food that actually makes us feel good and healthy is not comfort food.
Why don’t we Americans eat more of these plant-based foods and fewer of the blissbased foods? It’s complicated. People are swayed by advertising and influenced by hectic schedules. One starting place would be to teach people
The COVID-19 pandemic won’t be the last we face, so it’s vital that we use every preventive tool we as a society have. Think of good nutrition as a seat belt for your health; it doesn’t guarantee you won’t get sick, but it helps to ensure the best outcomes.

Righting the Ship After a Financial Setback by Navneet Pahal
2020 has proven to be a challenging year in many ways, not the least of which has been a less than hospitable financial environment. Events ranging from a significant bear market in stocks earlier in the year to a dramatic increase in job layoffs have put many Americans in difficult financial positions. If you find yourself in these circumstances, you may be wondering what it will take to get back on track. A recent study by Ameriprise Financial shows that with or without a pandemic, financial setbacks are more common than you might think. More than three-quarters of those surveyed experienced at least one major financial setback in their lives and this does not include events since COVID-19 emerged.1 According to the study, more than half of respondents faced setbacks costing them at least $50,000, and for one-third
of respondents the losses exceeded $100,000. The impact was experienced across a wide range of households regardless of age or income level. But persistence paid off – a full 90 percent of respondents who experienced a serious setback say they have recovered from it. What can we learn from their experiences? Here are three key takeaways:
1
Be ready for anything
Financial setbacks can occur for a variety of reasons. Based on survey results, those range from investment market declines to earnings that did not meet expectations, to a job loss. Other events that created negative financial consequences include making a bad financial decision, having to provide support to family members, and divorce or illness. In short, there are any number of obstacles that could put a wrench in your financial plans. Having a contingency plan in place to respond to these types of emergencies can help you weather the immediate financial stress.
2
Patience and persistence are required
While most people who suffered a significant loss managed to overcome it, don’t expect your comeback to happen overnight. A consistent finding among those who 64
participated in the survey is that it takes time to rebound. For about two-thirds of the group, the recovery period lasted from one-to-five years. For others, it took longer, even more than 10 years in some cases. Their experiences show that overcoming a financial setback typically requires a deliberate approach. For half of survey respondents, that included finding ways to cut back on spending. Tied to that, some (37%) say they changed their practices around saving money. A quarter of respondents decided that adding work hours or delaying retirement was a necessary step. Others found that having emergency reserve funds in place helped deal with their sudden financial shortfall.
3
You may be better prepared as a result
Despite the stress of suddenly facing a financial struggle, there may be a bright side. More than half of survey respondents said they ultimately felt stronger as a result of the experience. And almost all (97%) say they have focused on improving their ability to withstand a repeat event. They decided to boost their emergency savings, many accumulating more than $50,000 in cash reserves, or enough to fill a six-month income gap should they face another setback in the future.

Getting back on track Whether the economic fallout from COVID-19 or some other factor has resulted in a financial setback for you this year, remember that you are not alone. Take the matter seriously but keep a level head. You’ll want to closely examine your financial situation to determine
the most appropriate steps to take to get your recovery underway. Talking with a financial advisor may be a good place to start. 1 Financial Comebacks study conducted online on behalf of Ameriprise Financial by Artemis Strategy Group among 3,042 Americans ages 30-70 with $100,000 or more in investable assets. Vivek Oberoi produces and Rohit Shetty & Ranveer Singh stars in Rosie the Saffron Chapter may join forces in comedy
V
ivek Oberoi of Satya fame and a well known actor in South Indian films will star alongside Palak Tiwari in the upcoming film Rosie The Saffron Chapter. His production house Oberoi Mega Entertainment will produce the film. For Palak, this will be her debut film and one hopes the film will open doors for her in Bollywood. Vivek shared a motion poster of the film on Instagram. Vivek purportedly found her whispers “both heart-touching and mind-numbing” without saying what the whispers were about. Palak gushed that she was honored to have Vivek join the cast and work under his guidance. She too shared the poster with great pride. The film has nothing to do with the Saffron party or politics, and instead, is a horror film that will keep viewers glued to their seats. The film is based on true events and is the first in a series of horror films. Rosie is an employee at a BPO called Saffron, and the office is haunted. Vishal Mishra, director of the film, said that he hoped to break the cliché of Indian horror films. Vivek said that this new venture supports concept driven films, and he hopes to change the movie landscape besides providing opportunity for new talent. He hopes to introduce new stars with each sequel and help them to gain a footing in the industry a noble goal indeed!

immba earned Rs 240 crore in India, a number that spells success for Rohit Shetty and Ranveer Singh. The film is so liked that fans are clamoring for a sequel with hopes one is in the works. The duo certainly appears to have hit it off and plan to get together again. This time around it is a comedy all the way. Bollywood Hungama reports that Rohit is looking to branch off from the Golmaal line. The lockdown gave him ample time to reflect and develop a comedy. He pitched it to Ranveer who was fired up once he heard the proposal. Ranveer has not done a comedy film in the Shetty style and agreed immediately. The fly in the funny ointment is that Ajay Devgan is fully booked for the next one year, pushing back Golmaal 5 by a year. It was supposed to be released by Diwali 2020, but it will likely put in an appearance by the end of 2021. Simmba is not the first time the pair of Rohit and Ranveer has come together. They have worked on commercials and developed a fondness as well as mutual respect. Simmba simply underlines and cements the partnership. Ranveer is likely to get some practice acting in comedy films from the Gujju comedy Jayeshbhai Jordaar. His next film is ’83, which co-stars his wife Deepika Padukone. 67
Shraddha Kapoor’s Stree released in Japan
I
magine a woman’s spirit attacking men in the dead of the night. It is something for gender equality, even if it lasts for just four days of a religious festival in a year held in Chanderi village. This is what the film Stree is all about. The good news is that now people in Japan will be able to enjoy this horror comedy starring Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao along with Amar Kaushik. Shraddha dutifully shared the good news of the Japan release via Twitter. In a male dominated patriarchal society where women play a very subdued and subservient role, the spirit of woman comes alive for four days and extracts its pound of flesh from the men of Chanderi village. A pity the spirit’s ravages are confined only to that village. The good thing about this horror film is that it is also a comedy, making it a cut above the rest in Indian horror films. The film also stars Pankaj Tripathi, Abhishek Banerjee and Aparshakti Khurana. If not for the story, just watch it for the fantastic dance Kamariya by Nora Fatehi. Japanese theaters opened in mid-May once quarantine restrictions were eased. Some theaters screened old Hollywood hits like Ben Hur and The Towering Inferno. For Japanese viewers, an Indian film is an altogether different, spicy offering and Stree is just the right masala to excite. 68
Siddiqui’s Serious Men will stream on October 2
N
awazuddin Siddiqui’s upcoming movie Serious Men is teasing fans with a newly released trailer. The show will premiere on Netflix on October 2, Gandhi ji’s birthday. While truth was a great weapon for Gandhi ji, the lead in Serious Men played by Nawazuddin sees the actor adopt questionable means so that his son can achieve fame and success in life. Serious Men is based on a novel of the same name by Manu Joseph. Nawazuddin plays the role of Ayyan Mani, a man from society’s disadvantaged section. Not having enjoyed the comforts in life, Ayyan wants to ensure that his son becomes famous and successful. The trailer shows Mani achieving his goal, but also hints at dubious means having been adopted to get to the end. Wait until October 2, 2020, for the mystery to unravel. Sudhir Mishra, National award winner, directs the film and believes the novel is funny, wacky and also deeply emotional. He says he enjoyed developing the film in partnership with Netflix. According to him, the film is specific in focusing on certain issues, but also has universal appeal. Indira Tiwari, Nasser, Shweta Basu Prasad and Aakshath Das are part of the cast in this screenplay adaptation by Bhavesh Mandalia. Siddiqui is known to deliver intense performances as shown in Bajrangi Bhaijan and Gangs of Wasseypur. How will he come across in Serious Men? His sheer, versatile genius should show through. On being asked how he felt about accepting Baluveer Returns that offered him an overtly negative role, the actor said that he was always fascinated by strong negative characters. Baluveer Returns gave him the chance to act in the fantasy genre, while Sony Sab was the correct family platform. The last negative character that Vimarsh Roshan played was in 2009, almost a decade ago.

Literature environment! too lacks a reference for Bambaal so Vimarsh decided to try his best to think and act like Bambaal while filming. Baluveer Returns is a true blue Indian superhero story with family audience content and interesting characters. The cast and crew remain hopeful of the audience’s positive response to the serial’s new episodes on Sony Sab.
Vimarsh admits that playing Bambaal was almost a cathartic new experience, given the special effects and technological improvements in the current industry. The actor admits that this project was a learning experience for him. Bambaal is a power hungry personality who desires to rule the underwater kingdom Shinkai. Such a megalomaniac underwater kingdom character is a novelty for the Indian small screen. Bambaal’s sharp mind, ability to think ahead and multiple avatars and disguises 70

Annu Kapoor charms audience with Rafi tales on Li’l Champs
Z
ee TV’s popular reality show Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Li’l Champs is ready to usher in a new chapter this season. The show will continue to keep the magic of the classical era alive with yet another legend from Bollywood Annu Kapoor. Having completed a successful stint with yet another legend of the industry, Amol Palekar, where classics from the 80’s were celebrated, the show will present audiences not only captivating performances by its contestants, but also some very interesting and hitherto untold anecdotes about musical icon Mohammad Rafi, revealed by Kapoor. It was a particular performance of the ones presented by the top seven Li’l Champs that triggered the flow of secret facts about the megastar. Annu Kapoor was reminded of one such story related to Mohammad Rafi when contestant Madhav Arora shared his performance with Rafi’s Baar Baar Dekho and Pardeshiyon se na Ankhiyan Milana. The famous renditions reminded Kapoor of a story about Rafi’s success and fame and how it went onto bring about massive changes in the life of his driver, Sultan. The story goes, Rafi having won immense fame and wealth from his singing, bought a right-hand wheel American car that in turn rendered his chauffeur Sultan jobless. However, Rafi ensured the hapless man did not go penniless and bought him a taxi, which later multiplied. There were several other interesting stories that the legend took out from his repertoire of knowledge about some of the biggest legends of the industry. They visibly left the judges, jury and contestants mesmerized. 72
