Edito r’s View Dear Readers, One year ago, the situation in the United States was very different. Covid-19 was front and center, and keeping safe, wearing masks, and canceling events all became the norm. As a team, we here at Desh Videsh Media Group had to make the hard decision to cancel all bridal shows and put a hold on wedding issues due to the pandemic. Well, here we are now, many of us are vaccinated, and we’re emerging from lockdowns. And one of the best moment’s for us is that we get to present readers with a Summer Wedding Resources issue, something we couldn’t do last year! It’s an incredible moment knowing that not only are couples planning again, but also that wedding vendors will get to meet with couples and put their passions to work. This issue, we bring you two real weddings that followed pandemic restrictions. Despite the restrictions, Kristen + Arpan and Sabrina + Dillan kept sight of the most important thing - celebrating their union and love! Take a look at their stories to learn more about these lovely couples. And of course, a wedding issue is not complete with a look at some Bollywood weddings that took place during the pandemic! Be sure to check out the article in case you missed hearing about celebrity weddings. We’re also excited to bring you an article about some of the latest trends in bridal wear. The article features interviews with top South Asian designers, Shyamal & Bhumika and clothing boutique Kalki Fashion. Learn straight from the source what styles and colors will make a statement in the next year of weddings. Another interesting trend is how brides are using virtual means to work with stylists. In this globally connected world, it certainly makes sense that we can now design outfits without leaving the comfort of our own homes. One article I’m personally excited about is the list of popular destinations in Florida for couples to take engagement photos! Having lived in Florida longer than in my homeland (and you know how much I love my India!), I feel a special tie to the beauty of some of these places. The engagement photo shoot is informal and really lets a couple show off their personalities - seeing these photographs is sometimes more fun than looking at wedding pictures!. Florida photographers Captured by Elle and Vanessa and Johnny Photography + Films share some of their favorite locations all over the state. Be sure to take a look at the article for ideas when planning your engagement photo shoot. Don’t miss the vendor profile for a new venue in Orlando, Canvas Event Venue. The venue with an open floor concept may be new, but many of you likely know the team behind the unique idea, the crew at sister company Occasions by Shangri-la. The raw event space allows each client to design the space according to their needs and creative ideas. We’re excited to see what is to come! We are thrilled to announce our upcoming MyShadi Bridal Expo will be in Orlando on August 22, 2021, at the Hilton Orlando. We know that couples are eager to begin planning their weddings and move on to the next phase in life, but safety will still be at the top of our minds. We hope you will join us to meet with the region’s top wedding vendors, all of whom have been eagerly awaiting the chance to meet with couples! Please visit www.myshadibridalexpo.com to register to attend and avoid long lines on the day of the show. As I close, I hope you all will enjoy summer, but remember to be safe and stay well! hen Kristen Wellman met Arpan Patel for the first time, little did she know that they would build a lifetime of love and two different cultures together. Arpan was immediately smitten with Kristen when he met her at a New Year’s party thrown by his friend Andrew, who turned out to play innocent matchmaker for his twin sister! Kristen and Arpan only had time for a one date before Kristen had to return to Indiana for school. During a time of her life where she was traveling to a new city every month for work, Kristen was struck by how caring and supportive Arpan turned out to be and their relationship blossomed through many FaceTimes and phone calls. His consistency won her over, and after a little over a year of dating, Arpan proposed. Arpan’s beautiful proposal took place at the Seven Mile Beach on Grand Cayman Islands. The idyllic holiday was planned as a group getaway by the couple and friends. The group enjoyed an exhilarating vacation complete with boating, surfing with stingrays, and lounging on the beach. Near the end of the trip, photo sessions were planned for the entire group. With everyone dressed to the nines, Arpan urged Kristen to walk down to the water with him and at the perfect moment, he got down on one knee and asked

the magical question, “Will you marry me?” For Kristen, it was a moment full of certainty and peace as she had absolute faith in Arpan. The happy couple celebrated with a romantic dinner at the lighthouse and a thrilling horseback ride through the waters the next morning. The couple originally planned an elaborate wedding that would include several ceremonies and 300 guests. However, due to Covid pandemic restrictions, they scaled down the event to a single day and thirty guests! The Hindu ceremony was held outdoors at Heritage Park in Canton, Michigan, and the Catholic ceremony took place at Old St Mary’s Catholic Church in Detroit, Michigan. The location worked for them as it was a mid point for both families and a convenient distance from the airport. Though most prewedding events were cancelled, the couple did have a beautiful, intimate rehearsal dinner at The Greek Restaurant in Detroit. The venue was accentuated by lovely pink blooms, glimmering candles and palm plant decorations. Kristen and Arpan’s wedding represented a respectful blend of both Catholic and Hindu cultures with beautiful ceremonies in accordance with both religions. There was a short, but lively Baraat where Bollywood music was played, while the Catholic ceremony featured traditional wedding music.

The couple also held a reception at The RattleSnake Club in Detroit. The couple opted to minimize Covid risks by hosting the reception at the club’s outdoor patio, which was located next to a beautiful river. Four to six people were seated at each table and the centerpieces of blooms, candy, shrubs and a gorgeous elephant name holder were handmade by the bride and her mom. Sparkling Edison lights set off reflections on the river water and accentuated the happy smiles of the small gathering filled with light and love. The couple had their dances at a small platform built in the middle of the park. While the bride and her father danced to Heartland’s “I loved her first,” the groom and his mom danced to Atif Aslam’s “Janam Janam.” The couple danced to a beautiful medley of romantic songs “Pehla Nasha” and “Speechless” by Dan+Shay. Kristen and Arpan made sure that everyone who could not attend the wedding in person was still able to celebrate the lovely occasion through live streaming. Kristen also surprised Arpan with a video she made in collaboration with Arpan’s friends, something Arpan will always cherish. Kristen and Arpan urge couples to not only enjoy every moment leading up to their wedding, but also enjoy the day to the fullest once it arrives.

Sabrina & Dillan

Elicia Bryan Photography

S

abrina Ramlall and Dillan Cothran’s wedding took place at the Dockside venue at Piedmont Park in Atlanta, Georgia. Their intimate ceremony celebrated their love and represented their cultures through beautiful and unique touches on their memorable day. Tell us about your wedding! What was the inspiration behind your day? Did you have a specific theme, style or color palette? Did you incorporate any cultural or religious traditions in any part of your day? We wanted a small and intimate wedding that incorporated the parts of a traditional Hindu wedding. The theme of the wedding was simple with the red of the traditional clothing to the simplistic white roses. Let’s talk about wedding decor. How did you decorate your space for the ceremony and the reception? Was any part of the decor DIY? Our venue was so beautiful that we mainly used the natural scenery as our backdrop for the wedding. We got married in front of Lake Clara Meer in Piedmont Park, which was perfect for us since we got engaged directly across from where we were married. We used the simple white folding chairs for our guests, and the aisle was lined with white roses in simple glass vases. How did you meet? Tell us about the proposal. We met in the 5th grade and became friends who picked on each other. In 7th grade, Dillan asked me out during orchestra class one day, and we have been together since. We grew up through high school and college with each other and supported each other through careers and a long distance relationship. Our proposal was whirlwind because Dillan planned a lunch date in the middle of my school midterms, and I was extremely stressed and tried to cancel the date

multiple times. Luckily Dillan did not let that happen! It was my first time actually walking though Piedmont Park and then suddenly he got down on one knee and asked me to be his wife after 11 years of being together. It was the easiest yes I have ever said. What was the most anticipated or special moment of your wedding day? Our wedding day was actually our 12 year dating anniversary. We were both anticipating our vows because it marked us making a life long promise to love each other. Do you have any wedding planning or marriage advice that you’d like to share with other couples planning their day? Keeping the ceremony as personal and simple as possible was the highlight for us. It was exactly how we wanted it and less is more. This way we both were not stressing about the logistics of the ceremony - instead we just focused on being there with each other at that moment.

Am I Able To Get Rid of Toxins Before My Wedding? H

appy June and happy wedding season! Usually, in preparation for our wedding, we want to make sure that we look our best physically. But are we also in our best shape when it comes to our health? Our bodies do so much for us. But, we do not always take care of it to the best of our abilities. The foods we eat, the lifestyle we live - it may not be conducive to good health. Food becomes our body. It creates all of our tissues and all of our being. According to Āyurveda, we have 7 bodily tissues: rāsa (plasma), rakta (blood), mamsa (muscle), medha (fat/adipose tissue), ashti (bone), majja (bone marrow), and shukra (reproductive tissue). Our food breaks down into two categories - it creates a superior byproduct and an inferior byproduct. The superior byproduct creates the first tissue, rāsa, and the

32

By Chahna Tailor inferior byproduct goes to create the next tissue in line, rakta. This continues to happen down the line. Along with the inferior byproduct, a little bit of each tissue drips down into the next until it collects some of each - which ends up being our reproductive tissue - the last in line. In Āyurveda, there is a concept called aam (also seen as āma, ām, aama). Aam is known as undigested food. Food that is undigested becomes toxic. It is considered as poison to the body. Āyurveda believes that much of our health is related to our gut health. If our digestive fire, our agni, is not working at its optimal level, it starts to leave food undigested, thus creating aam. If aam is created, it can start to spread to other parts of the body and throw our doshic nature out of balance. It also starts to hinder the body tissue creation process creating weaker tissues.

Signs That You Have Aam Building Up There are some telltale signs that there is aam building up. You can take a look at your tongue. Even after tongue scraping, do you see a white coating? This is aam buildup. Are you constantly feeling weak and fatigued? Is your breath smelling bad? Are you having excess buildup of earwax, more nasal congestion, or digestive issues? These are just a few signs.

What Can We Do To Get Back On Track? For aam build-up, Āyurveda prescribes that we first increase the power of our agni. More efficient agni will kickstart proper digestion so that new aam won’t form. Herbs that do this are called agni deepana

dravya. The next step is to remove the aam by digesting it. Herbs that do this are called aam pachana dravya. In addition to herbs, we need to start taking light foods (laghu ahara) such as warm kichari (with ginger, pepper, salt and cumin seeds), and also perform therapies (langhana) such as fasting and exercising that lighten the body and increase our agni and metabolism. Some herbs can help destroy aam in the stomach area and some others can help with loss of taste due to aam buildup. Yoga and Pranayama are also very beneficial because such practices can help to cleanse and stimulate agni. Lastly, we would want to create a dietary protocol to help us reduce aam from building up again. Clearing aam may take a little bit time and dedication, but it is so worth it! You will feel lighter, happier, healthier, and it will help you feel more balanced for your wedding. Isn’t that all we can ask for? Interested in a consultation so that you can be feeling at your best for your wedding? Give me a call or text at 954-695-9296 or email me at chahna@namaskartoyou.com.

eddings are more than just a ceremony that makes a union official. For some brides, the wedding is a chance for a dream imagined as a young girl to come to life. While every bride’s dream features different settings and themes for the special day, there is a common thread that binds them all - the perfect wedding dress! When we think of an Indian wedding ceremony whether big or small, one of the first images that come to mind is a radiant bride draped in the most stunning wedding attire as she walks down the aisle. Bridal trends tend to change every year, and while most are still steeped in tradition, some trends allow brides to show off their creativity and personality. This year has broug ht some interesting trends to the forefront in terms of colors, silhouettes, and even the entire idea of wedding shopping. To understand the latest trends, we spoke with industry expert Nishit Gupta, Director of Kalki Fashion, who feels that this is an interesting year in terms of bridal collections that explode with bold new colors and styles.

consider this year. Gone are the days of the traditional marron, reds, and greens. Bold colors help a bride stand out on her wedding day.

Gupta said, “Brides are also opting for very light lehengas as well. They don’t want that heavily embroidered lehenga. They want something that is stylish and makes them stand out as a bride. But to look like a bride you don’t have to wear a red lehenga with golden work. There are different ways you can still be in the limelight. Brides will opt for different silhouettes, not just different colors. It’s just not going to be a lehenga anymore, brides might opt for sarees and indo-western lehengas.”

Comfort and style over highly-embroidered Brides of ten choose heavily embroidered designs, which can be cumbersome and weighty, especially when worn for extended time. These days, brides want substance and style, so they choose comfort over the overdone look.

Tangerine and mustard are the new red Gupta believes the concept of bridal wear going forward has the potential to move away from traditional colors and allow brides to express themselves more. He said, “I feel 2021 is going to be a really interesting year. Once we are out of the current situation that is happening in India and all over the world, there will be a lot of weddings. There might be certain restrictions, so weddings might be of different proportions giving brides the option of exploring so many different ways they can style themselves.” One way to express style and personality is through color. Gupta feels that tangerine and mustard are two emerging colors brides should

Online shopping with a stylist With many brides using the internet and social media sites as a means to plan their weddings, it is only natural that they consider online shopping an option for their bridal wear as well as family outfits. Bridal fashions houses can now be found not just in India, but also all over the United States. With travel to India not always possible, online shopping offers brides with many options and does not limit them to geographic location. Recognizing their far reach, many fashion boutiques have begun offering customized and shipping options. Online shopping experiences with a wedding stylist in real time are another way to choose wedding attire without being physically present at the store. This can save brides not only with time, but also helps narrow your possibilities with the help of an expert from the comfort of your living room! Gupta believes the online shopping experience can make a bride’s decision-making task much easier. He said, “You might think how can I buy a lehenga without trying it, but if you have the right person to guide you, it becomes easier.” He adds that “... an excellent team that is able to understand what a customer requires from a fit to a cut and to a certain change in embroidery.” We do a family shopping experience as well where the women of the house come to shop together and if they want to be in sync in terms of a color theme or certain style they are looking for. Then our stylists are able to create those different outfits,” he adds. Online shopping has been a blessing in disguise for brides who normally would have done their shopping in India. With the Covid-19 pandemic, in-person shopping just was not possible. By the year-end, online shopping with a stylist could emerge as a breakthrough in the wedding fashion industry. “If I would have known about online bridal shopping before, life would have been so much easier,” says Bindiya Ahuja, a soon-tobe bride who shopped for her bridal

outfit all the way from India and had it shipped directly to her in the United States. She adds, “I basically spent double the amount of the actual price of the lehenga and it was a lot of hassle for my family in India to go through while selecting the perfect outfit for me.”

Canvas is a completely raw event space for you to play in. The open central gallery of 10,000 square feet gives clients endless options. How Canvas Began With over 17 years of event industry experience with sister company, Occasions by Shangri-la, the team at Canvas understands the challenges that come with other event venues in Orlando. Busy carpets, off-trend chandeliers, and limited natural light can make some spaces a chore to camouflage and redecorate. They saw a need for a high-capacity “blank canvas” in the Orlando event space rental market, and they wanted to offer a solution. They loved the idea of “upcycling” an old building into something beautiful. And when they found a former retail store with oodles of potential on Florida Mall Avenue, they knew this was it. Photographers Captured by Elle and Vanessa & Johnny Photography + Films share some of their favorites spots in the Sunshine State!

Beaches There is no shortage of beautiful beaches to choose from in Florida. Given that beaches in Florida can get crowded, it’s best to schedule a shoot at sunrise. Not only is the crowd smaller, but it’s also cooler and you get to experience the breathtaking sunrise. Below are a few favorites that feature a gorgeous backdrop and charming feel. South Pointe Park at South Beach is a picturesque park featuring a pier, rocks and a vast beach dotted with colorful lifeguard stands.

Historic Sites If you’re looking for classic portraits, Florida offers many historic sites with incredible architecture, stunning backdrops, and vintage appeal. Biltmore Hotel is a Miami icon and nearly every corner of the area is filled with charm and vintage style.

Hollywood Beach exudes a vintage feel on the boardwalk. In the early morning, the beach is quiet, and at sunset, the sun is not blocked by too many tall buildings. Hallandale Beach is charming and beautiful with many boutique hotels to use as backgrounds and quiet beaches, especially at sunrise. Bill Baggs State Park is the home of the Cape Florida Lighthouse also known as El Farolito. Beautiful at sunrise or sunset, the park has beautiful beach grass and a picturesque lighthouse in the background. Historic Virginia Key Beach is off the coast of Miami near Key Biscayne and has a charming vintage carousel. Key Biscayne is beautiful day or night! Catch the sunset or feature the background of the high rises in Brickell at night.

The Del Prado Entrance features a gorgeous walkway covered in wood trellises. This is a favorite location for many couples, and the best part is that no permit fee is required. The Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is a popular spot, and rightly so! The former villa and estate of businessman James Deering, of the Deering McCormick-International

The urban Dickson Azalea Park is like a nature preserve right in the middle of downtown Orlando. With cool bridges, a tunnel and mega lush landscapes, this spot has a jungle vibe and is also dog friendly! The Wall Murals in Downtown Orlando are amazing and colorful. Located in the area around the Mills and Milk District areas downtown, the murals make for a modern backdrop.

The Disney Grand Floridian Resort is a classic and upscale Disney resort. The buildings are all crisp white and there’s always tons of colorful flowers that change with the seasons. Current restrictions due to Covid, require room or dining reservations to visit the property. Celebration is a little town south of Orlando and was created by Disney. With its adorable hometown vibe, waterfront area, and walking paths, the location is idea for romantic, yet playful photos.

Gardens, Parks, and Towns The vast history of Florida can be seen through its charming, vintage towns as well as some more modern, unique twists on old classics. Winter Garden is a town rich in history and was founded by farmers, fishermen, and citrus growers. This location offers many great brick walls, an old school theater, a beautiful fountain and a clock tower for classy engagement photos with a little vintage charm, Morikami Museum & Gardens is the perfect setting for a garden lover. The expansive Japanese gardens with strolling paths, bonsai collections, and lakes filled with koi are a tranquil backdrop for a nature-loving couple.

Bollywood Weddings during the Pandemic 70

W

e all look forward to the Big Fat Indian Weddings of Bollywood. The well-known stars, a who’s who guest list, grand décor and mouthwatering food are all part of the gala events that come together for stunning Bollywood weddings. Marriages may be made in heaven, but these mega-events are made extraordinary by wedding planners. Recently with the Covid-19 pandemic and the subsequent lockdown and other restrictions, Bollywood celebrities have opted for minimalistic wedding ceremonies with only the family and a few close friends present and usually no party or reception. Such simplicity and regard for the regulations set in place sets a precedence for all whether Bollywood stars or the general public. Many Bollywood celebrities tied the knot in 2020 and 2021. Some of the most notable weddings included Neha Kakkar and Rohanpreet Singh (October 24, 2020), Aditya Narayan and Shweta Agarwal (December 1, 2020), Gauahar Khan and Zaid Darbar (December 25, 2020), and Dia Mirza and Vaibhav Rekhi (February 15, 2021).

Neha Kakkar and Rohanpreet Singh The “London Thumakda” singer Neha Kakkar married her boyfriend Rohanpreet Singh on October 24, 2020. The marriage was a simple ceremony attended by their family and close friends. The couple dazzled with twin outfits for nearly every event of the wedding. For the Mehndi, the couple was dressed in traditional green attire by designer Anita Dongre, while for the haldi, they chose the symbolic yellow for clothing. The color theme for the Sangeet ceremony was pink, and the elaborate décor gave the event the feel of being in a fairytale. Neha dressed in a pink Anita Dongre lehenga, while Rohanpreet looked stunning in his white tuxedo by Tisa Studio, with bright pink accessories matching his bride.

The playback singer and Indian Idol judge Aditya Narayan married his long-time girlfriend of more than 10 years, Shweta Agarwal, at a closed ceremony on Tuesday, December 1, 2020. It took place at the Iskcon Temple in Mumbai with only family members attending due to Covid restrictions. However, this could not dampen the spirit of the groom’s papa, the famous singer Udit Narayan, who had great fun dancing as baraati with his wife Deepa. The couple looked graceful in their ivory traditional attire with the gorgeous turban for the groom and wonderfully crafted jewelry including the traditional chooda and maang tika. Later that evening, the reception party included celebrity guests Govinda, his family, Bharti Singh, her husband Harsh Limbhachiya, television actor Ravi Dubey and choreographer Punit Pathak. At the reception, the newlyweds looked stunning with the bride in a flowing red gown and diamond necklace and the groom in a black suit.

The daytime Chiksa was followed by a Mehndi at night. The bride glowed in a bright sharara and the groom looked gorgeous in dark green kurta pyjama set by Mayyur Girotra Couture. The morning of December 25 marked the Nikah or marriage of the couple amidst the close ones. Gauahar was dressed in a beautiful embellished ivory sharara along with Kundan and Polki jewelry. Zaid wore an off-white sherwani with an exquisite lucknowi print.
