EDITOR’S NOTE Ho Chi Minh City is home to a population of over 8.6 million people and 40% of that group are aged 24 years and under. Living deep within a community of such a young demographic, I ask myself, “What do I find most inspiring about the YOUTH of Saigon?” The answer came easily... The young entrepreneurial spirit of the people here. The tenacious hustlers that bite at every chance and every opportunity in this fast growing city of ours. The warm network of locals and expats that are always lending a helping hand and a bright smile. The eagerness to connect, to share, to collaborate, and to grow. The energy of Saigon is exhilarating and infectious. In the YOUTH issue of #iAMHCMC, we shine a spotlight on courageous young pastry chef, Kasey Huong Doan of Ivoire (pg. 6), and her sweet, glossy confections that are elevating the dessert game of Saigon. For the young at heart, we list down the Best Destinations in Vietnam for Thrillseekers and Adrenaline Junkies (pg. 14), with heart racing options that will see you scaling the tallest mountains in Sapa or windsurfing in Phan Thiet. We celebrate how Friends for Street Children (pg. 24) are providing care and education for the lives of migrant children struggling to survive in Saigon. While Hang Le and her social enterprise Nui Tuong Project (pg. 29) also fights towards the promise of a brighter future for village children in need, through sustainable agriculture and eco-tourism. In the pursuit to find the fountain of YOUTH and maintain a glowing complexion, discover our Best Facial Treatments in Saigon (pg. 42), but remember that beauty is only skin deep. creatively-named pastries each more curious than the last, with wholly unique combinations of colours, shapes, and flavours. At the other end, their grand pièce de résistance, the Creme Brulee mille crepe cake, makes choosing just one sweet treat to indulge in a nearly impossible task. For all its grandeur and finery, this patisserie is owned and operated by a humble and warm, friendly Saigonese chef named Kasey. And her reputation is growing into one of Ho Chi Minh City’s youngest culinary visionaries. Her passion for pastries began in Melbourne, Australia, where she originally went to university for Public Relations and Human Behaviour. “I didn’t expect to get into [the food] industry at all...I was really overwhelmed by the food culture and scene there,” she remembers. “Whenever I went out to eat with my boyfriend, who is now my fiance, I would always sneak into the kitchen. In Australia they always do open kitchens…
...I’d see them yelling at each other, loud voices, and see how much they care about correct details. I was in love, I was like, This is my career.
After enrolling at Le Cordon Bleu culinary
Kasey Huong Doan’s glossy confections and sweet pastries brings a new twist to Vietnamese food culture in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City. Among the notoriously chaotic streets of District 1, a tiny shopfront on Nguyen Du Street offers an idyllic, picturesque reprieve. Directly opposite the iconic French colonial central post office lies a quiet, unassuming yet remarkably sophisticated patisserie, which looks and feels like a portal to a casual cafe tucked away in a Parisian side street. Yet the pastries at Ivoire are anything but casual. 6 | iamhcmc.com
A glowing display case immediately greets visitors to Ivoire, with neatly-arranged rows of dazzling, glossy confections that look more like delicate sculptures than edible sweet pastries. For the macaron enthusiasts, there are several tantalizing varieties, including mango and jasmine, yuzu, pistachio, chocolate, yoghurt and mandarin, passionfruit, and Sherry PX with raisins. Moving down the line are some
school, Kasey worked her way up the culinary ladder, taking any opportunity she could. “I started to apply for more famous establishments, to work for free or even washing the dishes,” she says. From these experiences, she soon discovered her passion for pastries. But what brought her back to Saigon? “During my summer break, every time I’d come back here, I’d see the food culture in general keep developing, but not the pastries. There are good pastries out there but not too many, so my fiance and I decided that we should do something.” In November 2018, Ivoire opened its doors for the very first time. “I was quite scared before we opened because we thought ‘Will people accept this?’ because

it’s something really new,” she recalls. “So far everyone has accepted it with a very open mind, willing to try new stuff even if they’ve never heard the name of the dessert or ingredient before.” Ivoire’s success story is less than a year old, but the quality and variety of the pastries have already earned her a reputation amongst culinary moguls and aspiring young chefs in Ho Chi Minh City. “Actually every single week people keep sending resumes to us,” she says...
#iAMHCMC
Yet finding the basic ingredients we usually take for granted is one of Kasey’s greatest challenges as a pastry chef in Vietnam. “Even though we are lucky to get a lot of local fruit that is fresh and really delicious, things like dairy or cream, cheese, butter, all those kinds of things we have to import,” she says...
...They’re the same quality you would get in the States, or in France, but
...They say they’re willing to work for free, willing

to learn from us. I wish we had a bigger kitchen to accept all of them, right now in the kitchen we have 3 girls doing everything and we’re always bumping into each other!
As part of its core philosophy, Ivoire celebrates the simple fundamentals of what goes into each and every pastry. “In French, [Ivoire] means Ivory,” Kasey explains. “The colour of the eggshell, flour, white chocolate. The basic ingredients for baking that all pastries share.”
Still, her passion shines through her work not
only in the quality and visual appeal, but the remarkable flavours she brings together. I had the privilege of trying the Dark Mandarin, a deep brown and glossy rounded square topped with a delicate pastry orange and a real green leaf as garnish to make it seem even more lifelike. The rich, fluffy dark chocolate mousse gives way to the bright tartness and acidity of mandarin cream and thin slices of real, fresh mandarin contained in the center of the pastry. Kasey somehow manages to maintain the natural fruity, juicy consistency of the fresh mandarin without compromising the structure or integrity of the pastry as a whole. It is not only delightfully
balanced, but a marvel of culinary engineering— and tastes absolutely divine. When asked about her favourite item at the patisserie, Kasey’s “most valuable pastry” is the Coconut Sour. “To me it represents Vietnam with every single component inside it: coconut, pineapple, lemongrass, kalamansi, and the ốp la (sunny side up) egg on top,” she says. “Also, it is the very first cake I created inside the Ivoire kitchen.” This young patisserie is growing and expanding, with Kasey incorporating more baked goods like a range of croissants and pain au chocolat to her lineup. For culinary novices and self-proclaimed food critics alike, Ivoire is one of Saigon’s most exciting and decidedly unique up-and-coming culinary establishments. When she’s not busy crafting her delicacies, Kasey loves any opportunity to travel. “I love to try different cuisines from different cultures, and get inspired by their take on ingredients and flavours. My whole life revolves around food.” For now, Kasey, her fiance, and her team of chefs remain hard at work, dreaming up new creations, and occasionally bumping a few elbows along the way. 7

Willy Wonka Eat Your Heart Out! The Best Chocolate Desserts in Saigon
Chocolate Mousse Mug Studies have shown that chocolate (mainly the dark kind) eaten in moderation has many health benefits. Full of nutrients such as iron, magnesium, copper and manganese, it is a powerful source of antioxidants, may improve blood flow and lower blood pressure, may reduce the risk of heart disease, improves brain function, and even aids to protect our skin from the sun!

of light and airy milk chocolate mousse with strong toffee notes, encased in an original thin chocolate biscuit sponge. Developed by the French mastermind behind all of Marou’s creations, Head Pastry Chef Stephanie Aubriot, the dish was inspired by the strong hot chocolate culture of Switzerland, where Stephanie was based for several years. This splendid dessert is the perfect balance of sophistication, innovation and whimsy. The caramelised cashews and cacao nibs are a superb textural break from the freshly whipped chantilly cream and surprisingly, after scraping the plate clean, you’ll find yourself ready for more as the Chocolate Mousse Mug is not as heavy, rich or sweet as expected. As with all their in house delights, all dine in desserts served at Marou are made to order, ensuring freshness, optimal flavour and ultimate beauty. Stephanie proudly serves up the Tiramisu, a gorgeous tower of mascarpone cream, chocolate sponge and La Viet espresso coffee which is incredibly delicate and light in the mouth as she avoids using any gelatin. With the strong coffee culture inherit in this country, it is no surprise that Marou’s Tiramisu, with its heavenly marriage of coffee and chocolate, is the most popular dessert among their Vietnamese clientele.

Just around the corner from Maison Marou Saigon is Ralf’s Artisan Gelato. Hailing from Germany, Ralf towers over most of Saigon’s local residents, but the man is humble, gentle and kind with a clear passion for the quality and authenticity of his craft. Ralf prides himself on providing the best artisanal gelato by carefully selecting the highest quality natural ingredients. He focuses on daily small batches to ensure that his gelato has a short shelf life and his customer tastes only the freshest product. He avoids the use of additives, preservatives or artificial flavours/ colours and in what he terms as his ‘Gelato Laboratory’, Ralf produces four outstanding chocolate gelatos that are completely unique from one another.

Having studied pastry in Malaysia Sara relocated to Saigon only one and a half years ago. The petite chef is bright and bubbly behind her large framed spectacles and works tirelessly with her team in her small kitchen to produce signature choux pastries, single serve cakes and larger sized creations for special occasions, as well as catering packages.
For the ultimate chocolate lover’s cake, the Choconana Rum Birthday Cake from BAKES hits all the sweet spots. Layers of incredibly dense chocolate mud sponge are soaked in rum syrup, generously slathered with banana pastry cream and banana rum jam, and beautifully frosted in thick milk chocolate ganache. The top of the cake is decorated with giant chocolate curls, kumquat filled chocolate truffles, candied walnuts and dried rose petals. For all its bells and whistles, a slice of the decadent cake tastes surprisingly clean to the palate. After demolishing a generous serving, you’ll be left feeling surprisingly energised and not burdened by the usual sugar coma of other rich chocolate cakes. The cake feeds 10-12 people and is sure to bring the WOW factor to your next special occasion. Chef Sara Wu
The best selling Belgian Chocolate (and personal favourite of Ralf himself) is decadent, rich, smooth and velvety. It is absolutely everything you want a chocolate gelato to be and more, without being cloyingly sweet. The Marou Chocolate gelato is made from non alkalised cocoa, which results in a much brighter flavour, with an addictive tang that maintains the nuances of the locally grown cacao bean. Stracciatella provides a satisfying crunch from the generous amount of chocolate shavings found throughout the creamy milk gelato. The health benefits of a soak in Thanh Tan’s spring waters include improved blood circulation, reduced stress, reduced joint and muscle pain, and better sleep. Daily spa treatments, onsen journeys, yoga, and water meditation are included for all resort guests at no extra cost.
Thanh Tan Hot Springs Hotel by Fusion
Nestled in the tropical forests of Central Vietnam, this unique wellness destination harnesses the healing powers of the natural world, featuring open-air geothermal baths, a five-star spa resort, and the country’s first authentic onsen.
Among the rolling foothills of Truong Son mountains, 30 kilometres from the imperial capital city of Hue, lies the 50-hectare Alba Wellness Valley by Fusion. In the crisp air of a September morning, I’m getting a behindthe-scenes tour of the legendary Thanh Tan geothermal springs. Magma-heated water spouts miraculously from the bedrock. It’s the end of a century-long journey, from rainwater on the slopes of the nearby mountains, through the earth’s crust and down to the intense heat of the upper mantle, then into steam and back up to the cooler climes of the surface.

For those seeking a taste of adrenaline, a spot of culture, or time in the great outdoors, the resort’s neighbour, a public hot springs and leisure facility, is home to several dining and retail outlets, a state-of-the-art treetop “highwire” adventure course, zip line, mini water park, several trekking paths, and, of course, more steaming thermal baths, it’s the perfect choice for active couples, groups, and families. Thanh Tan Hot Springs Hotel by Fusion provides three-star accommodation for overnight visitors to the springs. These well-appointed rooms feature contemporary design, modern amenities, ensuite bathrooms, and accents of traditional Vietnamese handicrafts. Visit albawellnessvalley.com for more information.
“The local villagers knew about the spring long before the French arrived in Vietnam,” says my guide, Mai. “They named it Thanh Tan - which means fresh life or new day.” “In Italian,’’ she adds, “the name translates to alba.”

There’s no shortage of things to do in Saigon, but travellers, expats, and locals alike sometimes crave a quick getaway, whether it’s a weekend trip from Ho Chi Minh City, or a quick half-day escape from the hectic city center. Best of all, you don’t have to wander far from the city limits to discover quick day adventures suitable for just about any traveller. Read on to discover our top five picks for the best oneday adventures, all easily accessible right from the city centre.
Suoi Tien Amusement Park 120 Ha Noi Highway, Tan Phu, District 9. HCMC.
Perfect for: Families and curious travellers looking for a unique, fun, and quirky experience
How to get there: Suoi Tien Amusement Park is an easy 30-40 minute drive from the city center along the Hanoi Highway 52. Adventurous and frugal travellers can take the city bus (number 19, 50, 52, 53 or 150), for only VND5,000.
Overview: Suoi Tien Amusement Park is a well-known favourite among children and fun-loving adults alike, making it a perfect day trip for families and adventurous backpackers looking for a less touristy attraction near the city center. This popular theme park is Buddhistthemed, with traditional shrines and temples. Intricate statues and scenic backdrops around
Suoi Tien Amusement Park
Buu Long Pagoda every turn make this a selfie-lover’s dream. Foreign tourists in particular will find plenty to wonder and gawk at in this truly unique setting, worlds apart from any amusement parks in other parts of the globe. The Buddhist theme carries over into various “palaces” scattered throughout the park, which each offer unique exhibits expounding on different Buddhist themes. Be warned! Some of them take you on a journey through the
equivalent of Buddhist “hell” - sort of like walking through a haunted house. Youngsters may do well to avoid these attractions. They’ll find no shortage of good, clean fun, however, with a roller coaster and an assortment of thrill rides mostly catered to a younger crowd.
Buu Long Pagoda 81 Nguyen Xien Street, Long Binh Ward, District 9, HCMC.
Perfect for: Anyone looking for a quick zen getaway in the countryside
How to get there: Buu Long Pagoda is an easy 40 minute drive from the city center. A taxi will cost upwards of VND300,000 each way. If you prefer to hire a motorbike service it’ll cost around VND120,000. Unfortunately, no public buses run conveniently close to the pagoda, though you can take a city bus to Suoi Tien Amusement Park (number 19, 50, 52, 53 or 150) and hire a car or motorbike from there for a more cost-effective measure.

monument to an ancient legend and a favourite holy site for Vietnamese pilgrims and sightseers. You can access the temple on the mountain via the theme park at its base. Visitors eager to hike can take the stairs for a long and gruelling ascent though we wouldn’t recommend it for safety reasons (and it’s not a particularly scenic climb). For most visitors, however, the convenient gondola is the preferred mode of transport, offering scenic views of the surrounding countryside with its green, flat rice paddies and farms extending all the way to the horizon.
Ba Den Mountain District 9, making it a perfect day or half-day trip for any visitors looking for something beyond the typical tourist favourites near the city center with a distinctively peaceful, zen vibe. Locals and expats living in Saigon will appreciate this otherworldly oasis hidden right in their own backyard. In its peaceful, pastoral setting with spectacular views of Dong Nai River, Bửu Long Pagoda is truly one-of-a-kind in this part of Vietnam; a unique blending of Southeast Asian Buddhist cultures, and a rare escape to a quiet place of peaceful zen in the midst of Vietnam’s busiest and most populous municipality.
Tay Ninh Province - Ba Den Mountain (Black Virgin Mountain)
stop for a cà phê sữa đá. Alternatively, take a bus by visiting any travel agency around Bui Vien street to book your ticket for VND$75,000 (buses leave frequently every day, so booking far in advance shouldn’t be necessary). You can also hire a private taxi for around US$50.
Overview: Ba Den Mountain is a lonely, dormant volcano rising out of the vast flat landscape of southern Vietnam. Its name revolves around a female deity of Khmer origin, whose story varies among different ethnic groups in the area. It’s a rarity to encounter any geographic features with such a high elevation in this part of Vietnam, making this mountain a highly-contested strategic outpost during the war. Now, any remnants of conflict have been erased, and the mountain stands as a peaceful
Once you reach the temple, you’ll be greeted by fragrant plumes of burning incense, and a multi-terrace compound jutting out from the side of the mountain with a few places to worship, offer prayers, and enjoy the scenic vista below. In addition to tourists and local families who frequent this site, you might make friends with a few of the mischievous monkeys clambering through the tree branches.
Giang Dien Waterfall 104/4 Hoa Binh Hamlet, Giang Dien Ward, Giang Dien, Trang Bom, Dong Nai
Perfect for: Anyone looking for an escape to nature and a refreshing break from the Saigon heat
How to get there: For those who own or rent a motorbike, the waterfall is roughly a 1.5-2 hour drive from the city center, depending on how frequently you stop along the way. You can also catch city bus #12 from Ben Thanh

bus station for VND5,000, or hire a taxi for around VND600,000 (a hired motorbike will cost closer to VND200,000).
Overview: Giang Dien Waterfall is a sight to behold, easily accessible, and serves as a refreshing getaway for nature lovers, families, and anyone looking for a reprieve from Saigon’s persistently warm weather. This place is a well-known hot spot for locals though, so avoid public holidays and weekends for a less crowded experience. There’s a lot to explore here: various pathways, lakes, streams, farms, and gardens are all within walking distance. For those who want to relax, there’s a shuttle that takes you down the main path directly to the waterfall. Here you can hire a tent for the day (or even an overnight stay), as well as barbecue equipment and communal hotpot facilities (a favourite among locals). The waterfall is surrounded by many shady areas to relax by the water, as well as a shallow swimming lagoon and plenty of paths to explore the surrounding area. Staff at this “eco resort” strictly enforce the use of life vests, even in areas where water is only knee-deep, so be prepared to pay a nominal fee if you want to dip your toes in or go for a swim.

Overview: Perhaps Saigon’s most famous
At either location, you’ll have a chance to explore the network of tunnels yourself, as well as hear stories and learn all about their incredible history. There are also numerous exhibits and you can even watch documentaries about the tunnels and the Vietnam war. Both locations also feature a shooting range for visitors age 16 and up, but each bullet will cost you around US$1.50 depending on your weapon of choice.
day trip attraction, the Cu Chi tunnels are an interactive history lesson sure to pique the interest of anyone curious to know more about the Vietnam War (appropriately referred to as the American War by locals). Tour groups frequent this site daily, so almost no planning is required for this trip as it is tailored to just about any tourist eager to learn about Vietnam’s recent history. The Cu Chi tunnels are an incredible, elaborate network of wartime tunnels dug in the 1940s by the Viet Minh, extending all the way to the Cambodian border. Currently there are two areas open to the public: Binh Dinh and Binh Duoc. Binh Dinh is the more popular, touristy option for those with limited time and resources, but if you have all day and are feeling more adventurous, most visitors to Binh Duoc

PROTECTING THE VULNERABLE The Perilous Plight
and Lives of Migrant Children in the City If you’ve been here long enough, you may get used to graciously declining the purchase of a lottery ticket or pack of tissues from a seemingly happy child while out with friends at your local bia hoi or partying on Bui Vien. In reality, it doesn’t take very long before the guilt of declining becomes habitual and common as there are over 11,000 street children in Vietnam trying to sell odds and ends to help provide supplemental income for their families. If you take a moment to truly assess your surroundings, things aren’t always as they appear. Why are these children awake, far past their bedtime, perusing the streets where children shouldn’t be? Child labour exploitation is a symptom of poverty that extends beyond the “home.” It’s all too simple to blame on poor parenting, it’s a community issue. The truth is that child labour has had a long history in Vietnam. Many parents and guardians in rural provinces of Vietnam, like the Mekong Delta or central Vietnam, send their kids to Saigon hoping that their opportunities are greater than at home. More often than not, these children only become part of the vicious cycle of poverty. The harsh reality is that a family could end up sharing a small run-down room with several other families or live in a tent along the Saigon River.

Finding Refuge With the number of migrant children continuing to rise, Friends for Street Children (FFSC) has been actively tackling these issues with a solutions-oriented focus centered on the children they serve. Founded by Mr. Tran Van Soi, FFSC has provided care and education to these children since the 1980s. FFSC offers support to children living in poverty by alleviating some of the hardships they and

I sat with Sister Le Thi Thao, who has been with the charity for most of her adult life and has been the Directress of the charity since 2005, to discuss the hardships these children and their families face and how FFSC helps restore the dignity and livelihood of the demographic they serve. Children are sent to the city only to be subjected to exploitative and deceptive practices, often by people trusted by the family. The terms and agreements are vague and parents are not given information about their child’s whereabouts within the city. Consequently, many children are victims of homelessness, living in desolate conditions or moving from place to place in the slums of HCMC. FFSC coordinates with social workers to provide accommodation, food, and learning facilities for homeless, displaced or distressed children, while working to reintegrate them with their families and/or society. Many of these families come from areas where literacy and education levels are

low, ultimately leading them to making uninformed decisions. FFSC conducts educational training sessions for children and their families on health issues, life values, and life skills through their professional teachers and volunteers. These training sessions enable parents to make better and more informed decisions for their loved ones.

begin studying at our centers, but they end up stopping their studies to work more and help their family pay rent at the end of the month.
These children are more likely to risk their lives to financially support their families. Consequently, children’s lives are endangered taking on dangerous, precarious jobs.

access to education as a way to disrupt the poverty lifecycle. Social workers, volunteers, and professional teachers at FFSC all work together to deliver and foster a healthy, happy educational environment previously unattainable for these children. FFSC offers elementary level education and developmental support in the poorest neighbourhoods of the city, with the goal of integrating children into public schools. The charity also provides financial support for children who cannot fund their educational fees and expenses at public schools and universities. In 2006 and 2009 respectively, FFSC expanded its small vocational workshop to a handicraft factory and opened up
a Guesthouse at their headquarters in District 1. These expansions have allowed disadvantaged women to earn an income and prevent them from taking on risky, exploitative jobs. FFSC also offers vocational training and courses such as sewing, embroidery, languages, and computer skills allowing children and their families to gain the necessary skills needed to earn a more sustainable income, which helps restore their sense of livelihood. What started as a small project has grown into seven fully functioning development centers, one handicraft factory, and one social enterprise dedicated to serving disadvantaged children and their families. This year, FFSC celebrates its 35th year of raising awareness and addressing crucial issues that continue to impact the lives of the less fortunate with the belief that children are human beings who should be valued and respected. The charity has been able to serve and support over 1,200 children and their families so far. With support from donors and volunteers, the FFSC hopes to continue impacting the lives of everyone in Saigon while raising awareness in the community.

land, nestled along Dong Nai River and has grown to have four large wooden bungalows for accommodation, additional dormitory for volunteers, a spacious and open dining and kitchen area and a library where children gather for their lessons and study activities. Nui Tuong project is unique as it blends agriculture, eco-tourism and education in a creative and innovative way and Hang strives to expand each area to its full potential.
Cultivating Community...
A remarkable story about a small rural Vietnamese community and its heartwarming transformation.
Nui Tuong is one of the poorest communities in the Dong Nai province where the main source of living is farming. Unlike some other provinces in Vietnam, Dong Nai has limited resources and English is not taught at primary school level. The Nui Tuong Project began in May 2016 when Hang Le returned back to her place of birth. Hang was born into a family of accomplished farmers. Having graduated with an English degree, life took Hang to the city where she spent years in Saigon working on a variety of projects and teaching Vietnamese to foreigners. Over time, Hang found her life to be unfulfilling and empty. She was always drawn to her roots and wanted to find a way to give back to her people. Upon returning to Nui Tuong, Hang immediately saw that little had changed for most families in her community since her childhood years. The severe poverty weighed on the community, they had low self-esteem and small hopes for a better future.
Finding Opportunity in the Darkest of Places... With a passion to lead her community towards a brighter future, Hang realised the huge potential in sustainable agriculture and ecotourism, as Nui Tuong is mere walking distance from Cat Tien National Park. Not long after she returned back to her village, the head of the ward asked her to teach the local children English in one of the small community houses available. She accepted enthusiastically and quickly saw how smart and inquisitive children of the community were. Hang recognized that in order to continue their development and create sustainable change, she needed to foster an environment where local children could learn, conduct experiments and share knowledge, in a safe and supportive environment.
At present, there is one permanent staff, Ms. Celine – a French national – who plans to remain at Nui Tuong for two years and is in charge of agricultural development. Her expertise and passion lie in permaculture, organic produce and sustainability and she has devoted her time to both managing the farm as well as creating workshops for the children. The long term goal is to have plants, fruits and vegetables all year round and to entrust the farm operations to the local children. Celine and the children learn about how to create small and large scale farms and about the local challenges in their production
With her own money, Hang founded Nui Tuong Project which is now a social enterprise. It presently sits on a 2000 square metre plot of 29

to be experienced by anyone who loves nature, especially families that live and work in big cities. As a guest you pay a small fee for accommodation in one of the bungalows and you can use the bicycles from the farm to explore the nearby surroundings as well as tour Cat Tien National Park. One can enjoy the rice fields, the farm, eat and live like locals within the commune, learn about country life and experience its simplicity while feeling part of a big family. Additionally, the project organises Summer Camps where children from local schools and English centers in Ho Chi Minh City can join local kids on the farm and stay between 1 - 4 weeks. Most of the activities are determined by the volunteers and a typical weekly program
processes. The children are encouraged to develop solutions, experiment with new and more suitable crops for the climate, make organic fertilizer, teach farmers not to use pesticides and learn about current methods and machinery used in modern farming. Hang dedicates most of her time to engaging with the parents in the village. She organises music nights and other events to bring the community closer and create trust in her teaching methods. During community nights, Hang encourages the parents to have trust in their children and to allow them the independence to develop new skill sets and build their confidence. She also guides children on how to develop an open communication with their families about their hopes and dreams. 30 | iamhcmc.com
Hang emphasizes the importance of having practical skills in addition to just good grades in school, which is what most parents usually focus on and what is promoted in traditional education systems. By promoting “learning by doing Hang aims to strengthen the childrens’ abilities in performing independent research and having a solution driven, proactive mindset.
Nui Tuong Village Welcomes Everyone! Of course, Nui Tuong Project would have never been possible without the help of international volunteers and visitors, which Hang has been actively engaging with in the last two years. In Nui Tuong village, eco-tourism is suitable

Children attending the camp are involved in weekly workshops on farming and nutrition, making jam and wine, planting flowers and fruits and even yoga! Children are taught how to run projects, manage finances and how to utilise social media for promotion and marketing. Hang loves to observe and discover the potential of each child through these activities and once she recognises certain talent within each child, she will change their role in order to fit their skills and personality, which in turn gives them the courage to develop in the right direction. Hang shares as her personal motivation for this project...
To see a positive change in a human, to see them understand and trust themselves more and more every day, to have the opportunity to inspire them to be leaders.

and Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP). Students and staff from FPT University in Vietnam visited and prepared dinner for over 100 community members. Even visitors from Hong Kong are making their way to Nui Tuong village, where 30 students from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology built a soccer field for the whole community to enjoy and taught the children experiments about aerodynamics and engineering. Students from National University of Singapore have also visited for two consecutive years to build additional classrooms and facilities and implement solar lights for the amenities on the farm. Hang feels happy now, even though her life and community responsibilities have become increasingly demanding and complex. She aims to continue to expand and accommodate more children from her community, nurturing and improving each of their native talents and strengths. Hang sees Nui Tuong Project becoming the perfect social enterprise model for anyone to pick up as a valuable case study and implement in their home towns and communities. Within the next five years, most children will leave to study abroad, the farm will grow to cover five hectares of land and there will be a small factory to produce wine. There will be additional housing for guests and volunteers, as well as housing for lecturers and scientists, with a fully equipped lab for them to conduct experiments. This is how Hang envisions the development of her project, as she believes her efforts will bring continuous change in the local community, for a better living environment and a stronger local economy. Now Hang is focused on the actual day to day work with the children, which she considers the most rewarding human experience. Her most substantial need is to bring more awareness to Nui Tuong Project, and to inspire organisations and companies to support with donations and volunteers. As Nui Tuong Project grows, it will soon need four additional interns and an education coordinator, as well as volunteers in the fields of Technology, English and Farming.

Young Learners Jump Ahead to a
BRIGHT FUTURE AT AIS playgrounds, and open green spaces. AIS also features a range of campus styles and sizes, including two smaller locations in Thao Dien for a more intimate and personal setting. Using a “play-based learning” approach, AIS engages their students through all their senses and fosters a creative and active learning environment. “The play-based approach is very important to us,” says Ms. Perkins...

Why is Early Years education important? When is my child ready for school? And what kind of school should I choose? These are crucial questions that every parent will spend considerable time and resources investigating —because nothing is more important than seeing our children succeed and thrive. So what are some factors that parents should consider when answering these questions? It is helpful to first examine why an early education is important. “Social skills are so important for this age!” says Rachel Perkins, Kindergarten and Primary Principal at Australian International School (AIS)...
Children can not only develop their knowledge of maths, literacy, the world around them and beyond, but also emotional development and interpersonal communication skills.
Why AIS? As an international school, AIS gives students the ability to interact with other students and teachers from over 40 countries—helping them develop empathy and multicultural understanding from an early age. But what is it that truly sets the AIS early years programme apart from other international schools? “High-quality teachers!” emphasizes Ms. Perkins. “We take great care to ensure all of our teachers have great references, and at least three years of teaching experience in their home countries.” AIS also equips their teachers with tools to openly communicate and share what happens in the classroom with parents, not just in quarterly reports, but throughout each day. Using software called Seesaw, teachers can upload videos and photos of their students’ activities that parents can access directly from their phones—and best of all, photos and videos are private, for their parents’ eyes only. Parents who visit any AIS campus need no convincing: this international school offers some of the highest-quality educational facilities in the city, with spacious and modern classrooms,
we do in the classroom is actually carefully planned to promote the development of social and physical skills.
Choosing AIS AIS is an International Baccalaureate certified school with an exceptional Primary Years Programme that goes well beyond international quality standards. For parents who want to ensure the absolute best start for their students and a solid English education, AIS offers placement tests for kindergarten students who can then choose EAL courses suited to their level. While AIS is certainly well-equipped for all stages of a child’s development, the decision must ultimately be made by those who know the child best. “When parents know, they know,” says Ms Perkins. “It’s up to parents to decide when their child seems ready to engage and begin learning. And when they’re ready, we’re waiting for them.”

Breakthrough Learning Environments
Promote Wellbeing at ISHCMC
Source: ISHCMC
Ho Chi Minh City is currently saturated with international schools, but back in 1993, it couldn’t have been a more stark contrast. HCMC was once extremely insular, surrounded by quaint farmlands and rice fields in what are now heavilyurbanized outer districts. Vietnam was only just beginning to expand after the seismic economic and cultural shift brought about by the Đổi Mới reforms that gradually opened the country to the influence of the international community. Pioneering a new era of education, the founders of International School Ho Chi Minh City (ISHCMC) broke ground on the first ever international school in HCMC, starting as a small Australian grammar school and gradually transforming into a more globalized academic institution. Establishing an entirely new kind of school in HCMC during a period of relatively intense conservatism was no easy task, however. “They had to work with the Ministry of Education and the Department of Education 34 | iamhcmc.com
at the time,” says Head of School Adrian Watts. “They had to be convinced to allow a school that didn’t teach standard Vietnamese curriculum. ISHCMC was the founder of all those relationships and had to set the standard, and continues to do so over 25 years later.” ISHCMC was the first school to move to a full International Baccalaureate curriculum, the first to introduce mindfulness as part of the curriculum (which has only recently caught at other institutions), and the first to work with the Vietnamese education authorities to establish the legal framework for all modern schools to base their existence upon. From their humble origins in an old textile factory surrounded by rice fields in District 2, ISHCMC now has some of the most innovative and cutting edge facilities thanks to their newly renovated state-of-the-art Primary and Secondary campuses. As part of the Cognita Schools Group, they join a worldwide network of 70 diverse
institutions all dedicated to nurturing academic excellence with a global perspective. But ISHCMC’s core values go well beyond mere academics. Child safety and wellbeing are two of ISHCMC’s top priorities. As a member of the Cognita Schools Group, ISHCMC is held accountable by the UK’s Child Protection Act. Rigorous screening processes for all staff, including thorough background checks conducted by an outside organization, as well as regular audits and ongoing staff training, make ISHCMC one of the most secure and thoroughly-vetted academic institutions in the country. ISHCMC also sets itself apart with an unrivaled dedication to the wellbeing of its students through the quality of its learning environments, as well as the ability of its staff to utilize the tools of that environment to energize, engage, and empower each and every student to “uncover their learning”

and give them the tools to take an active role in their learning process—a principle ISHCMC refers to as ‘Student Agency.’ We only need to think back on our own education to appreciate the importance of our learning environments. Nearly all of us can remember those hours of dreaded boredom we spent in school, facing forward neatly in rows, sitting all day behind a desk as the teachers lectured and assigned homework. Most of us couldn’t wait to escape! “Students today have tremendous difficulty learning behind desks in straight rows, like an exam room every day,” Mr. Watts points out. “That’s not what the modern student needs, so we create environments that are the opposite of that. Flexible arrangements with cushions and low-level couches, writable walls, short-throw projectors that enable surfaces to become interactive, and break-out spaces encourage students to remain engaged in their learning, and very few students are off task as a result.” Unfortunately, traditional schools worldwide don’t typically utilize effective learning environments, to the detriment of students’ wellbeing. “Most schools are trying to teach the same way they taught in the 1860s to students in 2020,” says Mr. Watts. “When we’re talking about different generations, up to Millenials, we’ve identified different characteristics for all of them. But many schools have continued to operate exactly the same.”
Source: ISHCMC
By contrast, ISHCMC features some of the most remarkably innovative and modern facilities available anywhere in the world. The primary campus classrooms have all been newly renovated for the 2019-2020 academic year, and you’ve probably never seen anything like it. Classrooms are arranged with spaces that flow into one another, utilizing a mixture of cushions, tables, and chairs in mixed-use spaces where students can work together and participate in various workshops and activities organized by their teachers. These collaborative environments promote emotional intelligence and foster critical social skills needed for the future, which research increasingly shows to be most important to develop at an early age.
Through a play-based approach and a wide variety of specialized learning environments catered to each child’s individual strengths, primary school students are given ample resources to not only begin their academic learning journey, but thrive socially and emotionally at a key developmental stage. ISHCMC’s primary campus is home to a fully equipped cooking lab, a state-of-the-art music facility with soundproof rooms, a sixlane swimming pool, a gorgeous art space complemented by multi-use areas and an open environment with natural light (rather than confining students to a cramped table as is common with many schools’ shrinking arts spaces), a dedicated lab for creation and development using modern techniques like 3D printing, and much more. In addition to pristine learning environments, ISHCMC takes extra care to serve healthy meals, and a modern air purification system (also used in hospitals) as well as careful monitoring of air pollution levels—and even a lightning deflection system for Saigon’s notoriously severe thunderstorms—makes this one of Ho Chi Minh City’s safest and healthiest campuses.
Source: ISHCMC
ISHCMC has always continued its legacy of pioneering that it has been known for since its inception all those years ago, and arguably has moved on to become a global example of how uncompromising dedication to the quality of students’ learning environment can have a longlasting impact on their wellbeing, not only at an early age, but for years to come. 35

Getting to the Heart
of True Education at ISSP about them than it does about you. Instead of reacting to something hurtful, we should teach our kids to ask questions: What happened? Why is this person saying this? What might be happening in their lives that would make them act in a hurtful way or say hurtful things? Through these questions, as parents, we make talking about emotions a normal part of everyday by naming the emotions we feel and encouraging our children to do the same. This should be in the context of everyday experiences such as asking them how they felt after their sand castle was knocked over by a sibling.

Would you be surprised to find out that almost 50% of parents don’t know when their children can begin learning critical social skills such as empathy, honesty, respect, responsibility, and compassion? This is what a 2018 Ipsos survey found in a profile of hundreds of parents of children between ages 3-5 who have enrolled in early education programmes in the United States and South East Asian countries. Though an overwhelming majority of parents (about 92%) believe teaching positive character traits is more important now than ever before due to the influence of social media, more than half actually don’t think it’s possible to acquire them in the earliest years of childhood. Yet increasingly, schools like International School Saigon Pearl (ISSP) are seeing more and more research in child development that affirms it is not only possible to develop positive character traits in the first five years of a child’s 36 | iamhcmc.com
life, but that this time is actually a critical period for doing so. At only 6 months, for instance, children have been found to demonstrate signs of empathy and begin to understand how their actions affect those around them. At ISSP, educators and staff are well aware that developing critical social and emotional skills in children starts at the very earliest age. With bullying on the rise in media coverage, it seems that many children have no concern for other children’s feelings, nor do they sense or care about the impacts their actions have on other people. We need our children to learn how to be interested in the thoughts of others, to show empathy, to express their thoughts and feelings with words, and to use those words to negotiate and compromise, all while having a positive sense of self. So how do we go about raising a future generation of children who acquire these skills and grow into emotionally intelligent adults? Parents and teachers, of course, have a major role in encouraging good habits and mindful techniques. Most important in teaching children these character traits is equipping them with strategies for times when they encounter difficult social situations. When it comes to learning empathy, it’s best to teach children that the way people speak and behave says more
Teaching children to “self-talk” and coach themselves through difficult situations is a great way to help them react in a way that is compassionate and constructive rather than merely reactionary. You might teach your child to say, “I cannot control another’s words or behaviour, but I can control my own reaction and how I choose to act.” This simple statement, when really absorbed and put into practice, helps children take ownership of their actions and think about not only how they can best handle social situations, but how their actions will impact others. The “Proud Technique” is a great example to help children develop self-worth as well as teach them to think about their behaviour and plan

how they will react to adversity or negativity. “I’m proud of you when you ________. Are you proud of yourself?” Though it may seem strange, variations on this phrasing can actually encourage children to not only anticipate how to behave appropriately and positively, but to increase their sense of self-worth as they do so. These are just a few examples of how parents can intentionally and purposefully help their children become healthy, balanced, and civicminded adults. But think of all the hours children spend away from their parents in school—how can parents ensure their child’s character growth remains consistent when it is impossible to guide and support them at all times? This is where character education plays a vital role, and where schools like ISSP are stepping in to support parents and incorporate values, ethics, emotional maturity, and a sense of civics into their American-standard curriculum, starting from an early age. Though this is a developing field, there is a growing effort to standardise and fortify character education across academic institutions worldwide. While specific values and methods will vary across cultures and among different age groups, there are 11 key universal action points that ISSP adheres to: 1. Ensure educators at ISSP promote core values (empathy, compromise and negotiation, taking ownership of actions, expressing feelings with words). 2. Develop a comprehensive definition of character (specifically as it relates to
Source: ISSP thoughts, emotions, and actions). 3. Approach character development intentionally, proactively, and comprehensively. 4. Create caring and supportive communities in and out of school. 5. Encourage moral development in students, and provide opportunities throughout the day to develop morally. 6. Create a challenging academic environment to help students develop character. 7. Foster self-motivation in students’ learning process. 8. Ensure staff and educators are part of an ethical learning community, adhering to the values they teach. 9. Foster leadership values. 10. Engage parents as partners in raising and educating their children academically and socio-emotionally.
11. Regularly self-assess to ensure ongoing successful implementation of key principles. Standardising character education ensures that schools are operating from a researchbased methodology, rather than the individual preferences of each teacher. That way, the system is built to support, not supplant, each parents’ influence. Part of character education at ISSP has been to grow and develop a strong coalition of parents and staff representing over 30 nationalities, because it is vital that ISSP partner with parents to ensure the individual needs of each child are met. Through this partnership, children experience an environment of cultivation and growth both at home and school, and can begin learning critical social skills from their earliest years. ISSP is now the only international elementary and early years school in HCMC to have the prestigious accreditation from the Council of International Schools (CIS) and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC), and they firmly believe that this is the true and highest goal of education; to grow the whole person, in both academics and character, to prepare them for the challenges of living in a complex, uncertain, and ever-changing world. ISSP’s school motto speaks to this commitment: “Beyond academic excellence, we nurture character.”

Land Your Dream Job at an
International School in Saigon For foreign teachers committed to advancing their careers, working in top-notch facilities, and enjoying some of the best benefits of any professional field in Vietnam, working at international schools in Saigon is the number one choice. These highly-coveted jobs can be notoriously difficult to pin down, as international schools tend to have some of the most rigorous hiring standards of any educational institutions in Vietnam. International schools typically have a much more demanding schedule than teaching positions at public schools and language centers. You can expect to work from 7 am to 5 pm every weekday, in addition to occasional weekend obligations like school ceremonies and parent-teacher meetings. Though you do have paid holidays, they tend to be fixed within the academic schedule, and most international schools are not flexible with unpaid time off. International schools are for teachers who are committed for the long haul, and who are able to not only engage their students with excellent student-centered teaching, but act as a liaison between the school and the parents as well. So what specific qualities do international schools look for in prospective hires? There 38 | iamhcmc.com
are three key areas that International Schools focus on—and they are the criteria you should meet if you want to dramatically improve your chances of getting hired. Candidates must have solid credentials, a solid teaching experience background, and a culturally-sensitive air of professionalism and commitment. If you’re keen on teaching at an international school but don’t feel confident you’ll meet their rigorous standards, don’t worry! This article will tell you not only everything international schools look for in a candidate—but how to get the necessary experience and qualifications you need now, in order to get that dream job further down the line.
Teaching Credentials and Essential Qualifications At a bare minimum, teachers interested in working at international schools should have a bachelor’s degree and an EFL teaching certificate like a TEFL or, better yet, a CELTA or DELTA. Increasingly, however, as more and more college graduates easily obtain EFL teaching certificates for the purpose of teaching and travelling, international schools prefer candidates who are fully certified to teach in their home countries.
The certification process, depending on your home country, can take anywhere from 6 months to a year, and usually requires a significant financial investment. However, certified teachers in Vietnam typically earn around VND 120 to 240 million more annually than their non-certified counterparts. If teaching is your long-term career, this is an investment that will, eventually, pay off. The certification process typically requires completion of courses and examinations in subjects ranging from literature to maths, and a set number of assessed and/or recorded teaching hours. There are numerous online institutions that allow you to complete your teaching certification abroad—but they still require on-site assessed teaching. International schools typically offer support for teachers in the process of acquiring their certification, so in most cases it’s possible to work and complete a teaching certification simultaneously.
Teaching Experience: At Home or Abroad? Most international schools in Saigon require at least 3 years of prior teaching experience. However, candidates with teaching experience in their home countries are strongly preferred, and
EDUCATION
#iAMHCMC
is a requirement at some international schools in Vietnam. If you haven’t left your home country yet, this is an important factor to consider before making the big move. Your application will be strengthened by any teaching experience you have in your home country as well as abroad—and regardless of either, getting certified will put you ahead of most other candidates for consideration. Of course, good teaching references are important. Highlight any and all prior teaching experience, as well as specific coursework at your university that may be applicable to your teaching ability. Any teaching certificates and qualifications should be included. Be sure to describe your teaching methods and approach in your CV (i.e. for EFL teachers, most schools prefer a communicative, studentcentered approach).
Professionalism and Long Term Commitment International schools look to invest in their students and staff in the long-term. For that reason, many international schools require a 2-year full time contract from the start. This is a big commitment to make, and intentionally so—international schools aren’t interested in hiring backpackers that just want to make enough money to continue their travels. If your goal is to stay in Ho Chi Minh City for a short time as part of a broader travelling experience throughout Asia, you might be better off teaching at a language center or public schools.
Working at an international school requires a Monday-Friday and occasional weekend commitment for the entire school year. The intensity of the workload and the immersive academic environment means you won’t likely be able to go out or stay up late on weeknights. Though most of your work should be done during weekdays at school, exams and homework for your students may push your workload to after hours in order to meet deadlines. On the bright side, Vietnam’s academic year spans from August through May and sometimes up to early June. With a high salary and low cost of living, as well as contract completion bonuses and paid holidays, you should have plenty of time and money left over for travelling and vacation during the summer months. Some teachers opt to teach summer school during this time, which
gives teachers the opportunity to make and save even more money during this time of year. Before you consider a position at an international school, make sure you’re prepared for the kind of rigour and commitment that will be required of you on a daily basis. If you are passionate about teaching, committed to the long-term growth and well-being of your students, and want a position that will allow you to advance your career and become financially independent, a teaching job at an international school in Ho Chi Minh City could be the perfect fit for you.

Lost your luster? City living with its polluted air and frenetic lifestyle can play havoc with your skin and nowhere is this more noticeable than on your face. Fortunately, facial treatments in Ho Chi Minh City are incredibly affordable. From facial massage and natural ingredients, to Botox, fillers and lasers, there are plenty of options available right here in Saigon, promising to restore your glow and roll back the years. Far from frivolous, the benefits of regular facial treatments are well documented. They improve the skin’s tone, texture, elasticity and encourage the growth of new cells and increase collagen production. Exfoliation using microdermabrasion or an acid peel removes dead skin and diminishes scars. Satisfyingly, positive results are often immediate. As for the recommended frequency? This will depend on your type of skin, but most experts agree that once a month is about right. To help you choose where to go we’ve searched the city for the best facilities offering a range of facial treatments. Choosing the right spa for you is almost as important as the facial itself. Take a look at our selection, which covers no frills, medical, luxury and boutique spas as well as a dermatology clinic, and treat yourself! 42 | iamhcmc.com

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT
by Patrick Gaveau
I knew what motivated me was to inspire and share with others in order to create a better world. In Part 2 of this essay, I will discuss the concrete ways I go about doing just that. However, before I could continue on my quest, I needed to know what made the desire to succeed at my self-imposed goals burn so bright? And, perhaps even more importantly, what might be holding me back?
The Rationale for Being Irrational
The real test of knowledge is not whether it is true, but whether it empowers us. Yuval Noah Harari, “Sapiens”
Part 1: WHAT IT MEANS TO HAVE PURPOSE For as long as I can remember, I have always been working towards a goal or a dream. As soon as I managed to accomplish one of my objectives, a desire to target the next big thing would start forming. The process of working towards these goals has been a large part of what I feel has given my life meaning and purpose.
Why Does Having Purpose Even Matter?
Early on, I attained my dreams through trial and error. Fortitude was one of my strong points, so even when the path wasn’t easy I prided myself on never giving up. Yet, as I got older and gained wisdom I realised something: the forward motion I felt while working towards a goal was really only part of the deeper experience. There was a bigger question looming beneath it all.
I began by asking myself the following questions:
44 | iamhcmc.com
This primal question had no immediate answer. Other animals are content finding purpose by simply surviving. Humans seem to need more than that. But why?
• Why was I motivated to wake up every day? • Are we rational beings? • Is searching for purpose rational? • Can the lack of purpose be what damages us the most? Some of these questions were easy to answer.
Let me be blunt and provocative. For starters, humans are, in essence, irrational beings living in non-existent societies. By this, I mean that societies have been created by us. They are essentially figments of our imaginations. Certain things that we know to be true, like the fact that France borders on Switzerland, are actually human creations. Animal and plant life don’t see any difference between the two countries on either side of the Alps, yet, we insist on creating invisible borders. Humans are masters at creating stories and then deeply believing in them to the point that an alternate reality can no longer exist.
PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

Storytelling is what humans do best. We’ve created stories to explain and organise what we perceive to be real for millennia. It has allowed us to create complex and vast ever-changing systems that bind us together so that we can easily dominate other species. Without such a remarkable capacity to create fiction that makes us believe in Government, Money and Religion, we humans could not be at the top of the food chain. The ever changing stories we build over and over are the actual cement of our societies and cultures. Yet, despite our deep-seated beliefs in our stories, there is also something within us that thrives on paradox. To put it more clearly, can we all agree that when we say/think something, we often end up doing exactly the opposite? Is this as true for you as it is for me? Do you think that accepting such behavioural patterns as “normal” is rational? If tobacco has repeatedly been proven to result in cancer, why do we continue to sell it? To smoke it? If healthy food is essential to a healthy life, why do we continue to make the decision to eat so poorly? We can all agree that if we continue to abuse our plastic consumption that we put ourselves, our children and all life on Earth at risk of extinction. Yet, how many of us have managed to decrease our plastic use? And the list goes on. At heart, we are all irrational beings and this implies that humans have an incredible capacity to find comfort in contradictions. It is important to realise that our basic need to seek meaning in life is also irrational. Yet, that doesn’t make it any less essential.
What Holds Us Back From Our Goals?
Part 2: FINDING YOUR PURPOSE Anyone who has made it this far into this article might find some inspiration in the beautiful Mandy Hale quote that states that...
Sometimes all we can do is
Ikigai literally means “A Reason for Being”. Not only does this concept help define who a person truly is, it also creates a framework for what that person should strive to become. Joseph Campbell poignantly explained this concept when he wrote...
to embrace the uncertainty. Focus on the wait, enjoy
I hope that I’ve demonstrated two important things by now: our irrational capacity goes well beyond beliefs, and created fictions are a powerful force. Yet, what does irrationality have to do with needing to find purpose? Our quests for purpose are simply another part of our personal storytelling. They are built upon generations of fabricated knowledge. So if purpose was invented and therefore irrational can’t it also be limitless? In light of this, why can’t each of us create a beautiful story that resembles us, so that we can each strive in our imaginary world, and be exactly as successful as we choose to be?

A Lesson in Ikigai Take a look at the four central questions featured in this conceptual framework and address each one with a verb, name or concept that relates to how you see yourself. List as many elements you hold for each question. If you use the same words in several questions as in the beside sample, this is fine. Be honest with yourself, and take your time, do it over and over. It may take weeks to nail down the true essence of each personal category. Once you’ve completed your list, review the chosen words. Now it’s time to be truthful— you’ll grade yourself on how you truly excel at each concept. To do this, rate yourself on how proficient you think you are compared with a random group of 100 people. Take a look at one of my client’s sample tests. The word “creativity” appears repeatedly under each question category. He gave himself a score of 100%, meaning he felt strongly that he was a master at being creative. Finally, classify each word by order of importance. If a word scores below 80-85%, you may choose to remove it. As you work, you may realise that some verbs are similar and can be grouped. For example, negotiating and persuading have a close enough meaning that they can be summarised by one word such as “influencing”. If you’re still unsure about the right verbs/skills/capacities and its ratings, ask your partner, your mother or someone else who knows you very well, and validate your findings together.

Your next step is to search for one word that can effectively summarise the other verbs, names or concepts that have been identified within each section. This word should be written on the right side of the table and should truly describe the essence of who you are. For example, “To Flow” is my client’s Passion. He arrived at this word because of his skills of waterskiing, skiing, driving and improvisation. All of these talents require the ability to focus and react promptly as well as effective navigation capacities within the flux of the environment, whether that be flying through the air above a lake or sailing his way through a speech in front of a room full of business colleagues. He felt that the epitome of those skills was his ability to effectively “flow” through any situation. This is the same process of self reflection that he went through for each section. Once completed, you’ll know what words are the most important to you. These words, though extremely specific, will also be general enough to cover a wide variety of activities in which you can choose to partake. Your next step is to identify which activities will serve you best within this framework.

TO BE CONSCIOUS
My client’s discovered throughout the process that his Ikigai is “To Inspire”. Striving to inspire others requires “Consciousness” of thoughts, words and actions, which describes his Vocation. In order to find new ways to inspire others, he also needs to constantly continue to learn and to “Grow”, which is his Mission. As a business owner, “Leading” is a necessity. It is also an essential part of his character, making it his Vocation. Last but not least is his Passion for “Flow”. He is constantly seeking new ways to maximise his creative flow, in order to remain as long as possible in his most productive state. Reflecting in depth on these keywords helped him to narrow down his career paths to being a Mentor, Coach, Healer or Entertainer. For me, my Ikigai has become my compass. The gained knowledge of realising that my possibilities are limitless in the human construct of our society along with my deep beliefs in creating my life story, along with this guidance have provided deep and long lasting fulfilment. Discovering your own IKIGAI, Passion, Vocation, Mission and Profession is not as easy as it may seem. It may be more evident for some people than others. It often relates to each person’s capacities to reflect inwardly. If you face difficulties, ask for the support of a wise analytical mind and/or a wordsmith. Believe me, with sustained concentration and sufficient time, you’ll find it too, and once you do, you’ll be able to guide your storytelling path towards true meaning. Remember, your purpose in life may evolve over time, thus it is important to continue to re-examine your Ikigai every few years or so. The next time you find yourself needing to make an important decision concerning your life or career, ask yourself if doing so will serve your Ikigai? This will guide you, and give you strength to pursue your goals with a newly gained sense of purpose. Afterall, when you are living a passion-filled life you are living on purpose, and that is the purpose of life. 47

The Power of Effective Feedback
Effective Feedback within the workplace results in closer relationships, better collaboration and increased effectiveness in performance. Business performance trainer and executive coach, Victor Burill, shares some valuable insight.
The Importance of Feedback in High-Performing Teams
Leaders beware! The higher you go in an
According to a recent Forbes article, one of the essential characteristics of a high-performing team is one where the team members cultivate and practice an open feedback culture. These teams should provide and receive feedback regularly, regardless of position and tenure, in a productive way that should also deepen their relationships. Leaders can set the example by asking for feedback from team members, and responding positively versus defensively, effectively integrating the feedback into work behaviors.
Building an Open Feedback Culture starts with the Leader Stephen R. Covey, the world renowned author and keynote speaker says... 48 | iamhcmc.com
organisation, the less likely people are to give you straight feedback. Feedback is your life-support system. Without it, you will eventually fail. Do everything you can to create a culture where it is safe to give you feedback. This should be taken as a motivational warning for any leader into creating an open feedback culture in the workplace. The best leaders ask for more feedback, according to a study done by Jack Zenger and Joseph Folkman. In their research of over 50,000 executives they found that “Leaders who
ranked at the top 10% in asking for feedback were rated much higher, on average, in overall leadership effectiveness.” Feedback is also linked to employee engagement. In another recent study of over 22,000 leaders, Zenger and Folkman found that there was a correlation between low ratings from direct reports about the leader’s ability to give honest feedback and low engagement scores. Conversely, if a leader was rated in the top 10% at giving honest feedback, their reports ranked their engagement in the top 23%. Courtney Seiter, Director of People at Buffer says inviting feedback often, especially from those you trust will help any leader see challenges ahead of time, and you’ll gain experience in responding positively to feedback. She suggests beginning with open-ended questions for those who know you well and can speak with confidence about your work. Here are some great example questions:
BUSINESS
• If you had to make two suggestions for improving my work, what would they be? • How could I handle my projects more effectively? • What could I do to make your job easier? • How could I do a better job of following through on commitments? • If you were in my position, what would you do to show people more appreciation? • When do I need to involve other people in my decisions? • How could I do a better job of prioritising my activities?
Overcoming the Fear of Giving & Receiving Feedback One of the roadblocks of an open feedback culture is fear. When team members are fearful of what type of reaction they might receive if they say what they see, they are less likely to share openly – especially with their superiors. Imagine if you have just been asked if you would be open to some feedback. What would your reaction be? Does your stomach tighten? Do you feel fear or anger? Do you anticipate that this feedback will be critical? Are you already feeling defensive and believe that you need to explain, rationalise and justify your actions? These feelings are similar to those felt by many leaders. Many managers I know think they are open to feedback. They often tell employees that I had an open-door policy for everyone. Then they get frustrated when they hear backdoor gossip. If they tell employees that they can speak with them, why
#iAMHCMC
weren’t they all coming to them directly? The answer is often because of how they are expected to react when others hold opposing views.
How to Give and Receive Feedback
Sheila Heen and Douglas Stone in a 2014 issue of Harvard Business Review say...
Giving and receiving feedback is a skill and most people are not naturally good at it, says Shapiro. “One of your goals is to develop your team’s capacity to give feedback and help people get used to articulating how they feel the team is doing.” Take baby steps. At the second or third check-in, ask the group general questions such as, “On a scale of one to five, how well is the team sharing the workload? What needs to change?”
The [feedback] process strikes at the tension between two core human needs — the need to learn and grow, and the need to be accepted just the way you are.
Providing Feedback isn’t Solely the Team Leader’s Responsibility According to Mary Shapiro, who teaches organizational behaviour at Simmons College and is the author of the HBR Guide to Leading Teams, leaders can’t be the only one holding everyone accountable because they can’t possibly observe everything that’s going on. If the boss is the only one praising or critiquing, group dynamics suffer. “You want to give everyone the opportunity to say their piece,” she says. “Your job as manager is to ensure that team members are “providing regular constructive feedback,” says Roger Schwarz, an organizational psychologist and the author of Smart Leaders, Smarter Teams. “There needs to be an expectation within the team that this is a shared leadership responsibility,” he says.
Courtney Seiter, Director of People at Buffer suggests the 7 Criteria for Effective Feedback are: • The feedback provider is credible in the eyes of the feedback recipient. • The feedback provider is trusted by the feedback recipient. • The feedback is conveyed with good intentions. • The timing and the circumstances of giving the feedback are appropriate. • The feedback is given in an interactive manner. • The feedback message is clear. • The feedback is helpful to the recipient.
Final Tips of Giving & Receiving Feedback Do: • Make sure your team understands that feedback is a shared leadership responsibility. • Schedule routine check-in meetings where you encourage feedback. • Keep the tone positive by encouraging team members to say what they appreciate about others’ contributions. • Ask questions to get feedback on your feedback.
Don’t: • Start meetings with your own feedback for the team — allow everyone else to first express how they think they’re doing. • Shy away from performance issues — address them openly with the group. • Get in the middle of personality conflicts — help facilitate difficult conversations. • Don’t assume you’re always right. Good luck in your journey in building a safe, feedback rich environment with your teams!

What are workplace culture and habits in Vietnam? Your very first opportunity to build a network in Saigon is through your workplace so before heading off to networking events, it is important to understand several business related habits in Vietnam, especially if you’re an expat. Understanding Vietnamese workplaces is vital for integration, socialization, and success. Some of the following statements may be generalisations, but are a good summary about the culture and behaviours fostered in many companies: • Men continue to dominate the Vietnamese business world, but things are changing quickly. • Status is an important aspect of Vietnam’s business world and society. It is achieved not through age alone but also through education. • Companies function in a hierarchical manner.
• Generally speaking, older generation employees are more loyal than younger employees. • Decisions are made at the top and the decision maker is often the oldest, though this is also changing. • Vietnamese are respectful of their colleagues, especially those senior in age. • Vietnamese institutions often do not select the best and brightest, but rather their family members or closest friends. • Business relationships are relatively formal. • Disagreements are handled in a subtle manner, if you adopt this, you will likely find it effective. • Business relationships take time to develop as Vietnamese prefer to get to know their foreign counterparts before conducting business.
• Vietnamese names start with the surname followed by the middle and lastly the first name. It is important to use titles whenever possible. • When referring to one another, Vietnamese people will use the appropriate title followed by the first name. • The nap after lunchtime is a cultural norm and is counted as part of the total working hours. It raises staff efficiency, allowing them to return to work refreshed. • It is common for senior managers to be out of the office enhancing their ‘personal’ relationships and conducting ‘social’ intercourse on a daily basis. • Chatting or sharing a snack with colleagues is part and parcel of office life. • Most Vietnamese employees benefit from some coaching in phone manners; especially when introducing themselves over the phone. • If a colleague (or a colleague’s family member) is sick, Vietnamese co-workers usually take the time to visit, bringing along a small gift. • Vietnam is well known for its disciplined, hard-working and fast-learning population. However, due to language differences, you may need to repeat things more than once or paraphrase a complex sentence. This will help you to be understood effectively. • Remember that family relationships are very important here. It helps to enquire and show concern from time to time about your colleagues’ families. 51
