A Message From Dr. Goldstone Give your children the gift of dental health,
Preventing Cavities in children:
because the healthier your teeth are, the happier you look. They will thank you.
ADVICE FROM THE EXPERT:
GREGOR F. GEORGE D.D.S.
Your Child’s First Visit to the Dentist
Generally, your child's first dental visit should take place around one year of age or upon eruption of your child's first tooth. Introducing toddlers to their dentist early on is a great way to help them become comfortable with the office, equipment and procedures. If you're taking an older child to an appointment, bring your younger child along. It's a good opportunity for your child to meet the dentist, and for your dentist to take a first look at your child's dental progress.
Achieving a beautiful smile is a relatively simple accomplishment that has tremendous benefits, especially for children. There's no doubt that a bright, clean smile helps every child feel more comfortable in social settings, speak with fewer inhibitions and have better self-esteem. New advances in dentistry are constantly being developed. Your dentist is your link to learning more about preventative and restoration procedures and techniques. Your dental hygienist can also offer many informative suggestions about oral hygiene, as well as techniques to improve brushing and flossing.
Choosing a Dentist
The American D Dental Accosiation (A (ADA)
Every dentist I know works hard to help children stay cavity-free. By working with your child's dentist and dental hygienist, you can help your child achieve a healthy beautiful, cavity-free smile for a lifetime.
Continue taking your child to the dentist every six months for regular check-ups and cleanings to ensure healthy tooth development and to help stop cavity production before it starts. Far too many infants and toddlers in our The American country undergo general anesthesia andDental oral surgery simply becauseAccosiation early dental(ADA) decay goes undetected.
When should I schedule my child’s first trip to the dentist? Should my 3-year-old be flossing? How do I know if my child needs braces? Many parents have a difficult time judging how much dental care their children need. They know they want to prevent cavities, but they don’t always know the best way to do so.
P
roper dental care begins even before a baby’s first tooth appears. Remember that just because you can’t see the teeth doesn’t mean they aren’t there. Running a damp washcloth over your baby’s gums following feedings can prevent buildup of damaging bacteria. Once your child has a few teeth showing, you can brush them with a soft child’s toothbrush or rub them with gauze at the end of the day. Even babies can have problems with dental decay when parents do not practice good feeding habits at home. Putting your baby to sleep with a bottle in his or her mouth may be convenient in the short term — but it can harm
the baby’s teeth. When the sugars from juice or milk remain on a baby’s teeth for hours, they may eat enamel, creating a condition known as bottle mouth. Pocked, pitted, or discolored front teeth are signs of bottle mouth. Severe cases result in cavities and the need to pull all the front teeth until the permanent ones grow in.
• Brush your teeth at least twice a day. When you brush, don’t rush. Take enoughtime and make sure to do a thorough job.
The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends that a child’s first visit to the dentist take place by the first birthday. At this visit, the dentist will explain proper brushing and flossing techn iques (you need to floss once your baby has two teeth that touch) and conduct a modified exam while your baby sits on your lap.
• Practice good technique. Hold your toothbrush at a slight angle against your teeth and brush with short back-and-forth motions. Remember to brush the inside and chewing surfaces of your teeth, as well as your tongue.
When all of your child’s primary teeth have come in (usually around age 2½) your dentist may start applying topical fluoride. Fluoride hardens the tooth enamel, helpingward off the most common childhood oral disease, dental caries, or cavities.
Parents and child care providers should also help young children develop set times for drinking during the day as well because sucking on a bottle throughout the day can be equally damaging to young teeth.
What are Cavities? Cavities are caused by bacteria and food that are left on the teeth after eating. When these are not brushed away, acid collects on a tooth, softening its enamel until a hole — or cavity — forms. Regular use of fluoride toughens the real
You may want to take your child to a dentist who specializes in treating kids.
TIPS FOR BETTER ORAL HEALTH
A pediatric dentist’s primary goals are prevention, heading off potential oral health problems before they occur, and maintenance, ensuring through routine checkups and proper daily care that teeth and gums stay healthy.
• Use the proper equipment. Use a fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush. Consider using an electric or battery-operated toothbrush, especially if you have arthritis or other problems that make it difficult to brush effectively.
enamel, making it more difficult for acid to penetrate Although many municipalities require tap water to be fluoridated, other communities have no such regulations. If the water supply is not fluoridated, or if your family uses purified water, ask your dentist for fluoride supplements. Even though most toothpastes contain fluoride, toothpaste alone will not fully protect a child’s mouth. Be careful, however, too much fluoride can harm. tooth discoloration. Check with your dentist before supplementing.
How You Can Keep Your Teeth Healthy? Kids can take charge of their teeth by taking these steps: • Brush at least twice a day — after breakfast and before bedtime. If you can, brush after lunch or after sweet snacks. Brushing properly breaks down plaque.
Discoloration can also occur as a result of prolonged use of antibiotics, as some children’s medications contain a large amount of sugar. Parents should encourage children to brush twic edaily.
• Take your time while brushing teeth. Spend at least 2 or 3 minutes each time you brush. If you have trouble keeping track of the time, use a timer or play a recording of a song you like to help pass the time. • Be sure that your toothbrush has soft bristles (the package will tell you if they’re soft). Ask your parent to help you get a new toothbrush every 3 months. Some toothbrushes come with bristles that change color when it’s already time to change them
Remember—a tooth without a cavity is a lot less trouble than a tooth with a 24 fillings may be quick and cavity. Today's easy, but they're still not as good as our natural teeth. So, take care of them.

It feels weird the first few times you do it, but pretty soon you’ll be a pro. Slip the dental floss between each tooth and along the gum line gently once a day. The floss gets rid of food that’s hidden where your toothbrush can’t get it, no matter how well you brush. • It’s also important to visit the dentist twice a year. Strong, healthy teeth help you chew the right foods to help you grow. They help you speak clearly. And yes, they help you look your best.
After you eat, bacteria go crazy over the sugar on your teeth, like ants at a picnic. The bacteria break it down into acids that eat away tooth enamel, causing holes called cavities. Plaque also causes gingivitis (say: jin-juh-vi-tis), which is gum disease that can make your gums red, swollen, and sore. Your gums are those soft pink tissues in your mouth that hold your teeth in place. If you don't take care of your teeth, cavities and unhealthy gums will make your mouth very, very sore. Eating meals will be difficult. And you won't feel like smiling so much.

Different people give you very different advice. Some people say you should be spending eighty or ninety percent of your waking hours working on your thesis. Others (myself included) think that this is unrealistic and unhealthy, and that it’s important for your mental and physical health to .have other active interests If you have a family, you will have to balance your priorities even more carefully. Graduate school isn’t worth risking your personal relationships over; be sure that you save time and energy to focus on the people .who matter to you One of the keys to balancing your life is to develop a schedule that’s more or less consistent. You may decide that you will only work during the days, and that evenings are for your hobbies. Or you might decide that afternoons are for socializing and exercising, and work late at night. I decided very early on in graduate school that weekends were for me, not for my thesis, and I .think it helped me to stay sane Many graduate students hit the doldrums around the end of the second or beginning of the third year, when they’re finishing up their coursework and trying to focus in on a thesis topic. Sometimes this process can take quite a while. Try to find useful, enjoyable activi-

The Mania for Work Needless to say, an environment that emphasizes work without play is unhealthy. And anything that’s unhealthy has to be bad for business in the long run.As founder and CEO of outplacement consultancy Challenger, Gray & Christmas, John Challenger makes it his business to stay on top of workplace trends, and he sees a real danger in our culture of endless, pervasive work. “This has happened before in the tech industry. People burn out,” Challenger says. And if the number of jobs available begins to increase, burnout will lead to turnover, something few companies would welcome during a business upswing. “No company can afford to lose its best people by running them so hard they ultimately move on to other places,” Challenger says. As the economy grows, companies will need to focus much of their attention on retaining employees. “That means giving them room to .breathe,” he says
ties that can take your mind off of the thesis. Sing in a choir, learn a foreign language, study the history of ancient Greece, garden, or knit. If you schedule regular activities (rehearsals, tennis lessons), you will probably find it easier .to avoid drifting aimlessly from day to day In the final push to finish your thesis, though, you will almost certainly have less time for social activities than you used to. Your friends may start to make you feel guilty, whether they intend to or not. Warn them in advance that you expect to turn down lots of invitations, and it’s nothing personal -- but you need to focus on your thesis for a while. Then you’ll be all done and free as a bird! (Until the next (...phase of your life starts
It would be great if that breathing room included more than the typical few weeks of paid vacation. My recent four-month “break” was just the right amount of time I needed to decompress, to shift my mental and physical energies away from the world of work. True, I wouldn’t classify my maternity leave as downtime (I read a grand total of one book for fun), but when I returned to work I felt .reenergized simply because I had experienced some sustained relief from the inherent stress involved in switching between work and home. A week’s vacation here and there over the course of the year doesn’t provide enough time to allow your mind to leave work behind-particularly for executives who can’t go to the can without taking their cell phones along (you know who you).It really depends on the way you are
In a world where (according to the Families and Work Institute) many Americans don’t take all of their vacation time, and where cell phones and laptops are packed before bathing suits and sunscreen, long spells away from the office for any reason other than serious ill-health are unheard of. It’s little wonder that stress rates are high and employees have a burnout rate reminiscent of a Silicon Valley dotcom. It’s a vicious cycle. With recent layoffs, the remaining employees work harder. The harder they work, the more they need a break. But with layoffs i

Talk about nightmares! It’s become too hard, too scary, to take a vacation...!
Starting a relaxation practice can’t go to the can without taking their cell phones along (you know who you are ).Such people are real candidates for a stress-free vacation . A MODEST PROPOSAL Needless to say, an environment that emphasizes work without play is unhealthy. And anything that’s .unhealthy has to be bad for business in the long run As a nation of stressed-out workaholics, we need to shift our priorities, and be-dare I suggest it?-more like the Europeans, who down tools for weeks at a time without seeing their lives and economies fall apart. We should encourage sabbaticals with some sort of stipend that allows us weeks or even months away from the office. During our officially sanctioned absences, we’d be free to travel, take cooking classes, write that crime novel or do anything as long as it has nothing to do with work. If sabbaticals are accepted as the norm, careers won’t suffer. We’d be more balanced, less harried and probably a lot more interesting as individuals .
and No NoPlay... Play... and
And what’s the chance that sabbaticals, or something like them, would be accepted by corporate America According to Challenger, it’s somewhat less than zero. He would be happy if people just started taking all ,the vacation time due to them are stagnant ? 33
Challenger says, “people don’t really want to spend 6 the money to go somewhere. Sitting around at home doesn’t seem all that attractive, so a lot of people just forego taking a vacation.” And when salaries begin to grow, there’s another reason people find for not taking vacations: They’re too stressful. “You keep checking in, your work piles up, and you have a nightmare when you get back,” says Challenger . Talk about nightmares! It’s become too hard, too scary, to take a vacation. You leave the beach; you go back to your room; you start thinking about this project or that meeting. You try to call work-and you can’t get a line. Or the person who’s covering for you isn’t there. You try to check your e-mail, but you can’t log on. And you worry. Who’s covering? What’s happening? Hey, you might as well be in the office. It’s much more simpler .
A variety of relaxation techniques help you achieve the relaxation response. Those whose stress-busting benefits have been widely studied include deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, meditation, visualization, yoga, and tai chi . Learning the basics of these relaxation techniques isn’t difficult. But it takes practice to truly harness their stress-relieving power: daily practice, in fact. Most stress experts recommend setting aside at least 10 to 20 minutes a day for your relaxation practice. If you’d like to get even more stress relief, aim for 30 minutes to an hour . GETTING THE MOST OUT OF YOUR RELAXATION PRACTICE Set aside time in your daily schedule. The best way to start and maintain a relaxation practice is by incorporating it into your daily routine. Schedule a set time either once or twice a day for your practice. You may find that it’s easier to stick with your practice if you do it first thing in the morning, before other tasks and responsibilities get in the way . Don’t practice when you’re sleepy. These techniques can relax you so much that you will feel it very sleepy, especially if it’s close to bedtime. You will get the most out of these techniques if you practice when you’re fully awake and alert . Choose a technique that appeals to you. There is no single relaxation technique that is best. When choosing a relaxation technique, consider your specific needs, preferences, and fitness level. The right relaxation technique is the one that resonates with you and fits your lifestyle .
Challenger has seen the consequences: Executives who never distance themselves from work, never have .the opportunity to recharge their batteries For employees to feel entitled to take all their vacation time, executives or managers have to set an example. The boss should use up his vacation time each year.

Not all child safety seats are equal Years of research has shown that child passengers are safest when they are placed in a child safety seat that is appropriate for their age and size, and several different child restraints are nowadays available to accommodate a growing child’s safety needs.
The use of food additives is an emotional topic which continues to provoke consumer concern
A forward-facing child safety seat with a 5-point harness is recommended for children older than a year and between 20 and 40 pounds. For children who’ve outgrown those seats, a belt-positioning booster seat is recommended. However, a number of surveys have found that use of booster seats is highest among 3-year olds, an age when most children should still be using the forward-facing child safety seat.

espite modernday associations food additives have been used for centuries. Food preservation began when man first learned to safeguard food from one harvest to the next and by the salting and smoking of meat and fish. The Egyptians used colours and flavourings, and the Romans used saltpetre (potassium nitrate), spices and colours for preservation and to improve the appearance of foods. Cooks regularly used baking powder as a raising agent, thickeners for sauces and gravies, and colours, such as cochineal, to transform good-quality raw materials into foods that were safe, wholesome and enjoyable to eat. The overall aims of traditional home cooking remain the same as those prepared and preserved by today’s .food manufacturing methods

FDA public health alert: potential dosing errors with Tamiflu for Oral Suspension

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Placo have received seven reports of the dolls’ wings breaking off during use, resulting in corneal abrasions, torn retinas and blindness. The plastic dolls measure six inches tall, have blonde and purple hair, and colorful wings attached to their arms. The dolls are attached by their feet to a seven-inch magical wand launcher decorated with a moon or a heart.
Confusion in dosing Tamiflu for Oral Suspension has resulted in dosing errors. These errors occurred because the dosing dispenser packaged with the product has markings only in milligrams (mg), while the dosing instructions provided to the patient were written in milliliters (mL) or teaspoons (tsp).

Over the last 50 years, developments in food science
and technology have led to the discovery of many new substances that can fulfil numerous functions in foods. These food additives are now readily available and include; emulsifiers in margarine, sweeteners in low-calorie products and a wider range of preservatives and antioxidants which slow product spoilage and rancidity whilst maintaining taste.
What are food additives and why are they necessary? A food additive is defined as “any substance not normally consumed as a food in itself and not normally used as a characteristic ingredient of food whether or not it has nutritive value, the intentional addition of which to food for a technological purpose in the manufacture, processing, preparation, treatment, packaging, transport or storage of such food results,
or may be reasonably expected to result, in it or its by-products becoming directly or indirectly a component of such foods” (Council Directive 89/107/ EEC). Many food additives are naturally occurring and some are even essential nutrients; it is the technical purpose that leads to these being classified as food additives and given an E number. Food additives play an important role in today’s complex food supply. Never before has the range and choice of foods been so wide either in supermarkets, specialist food shops or when eating out. Whilst a shrinking proportion of the population is engaged in primary food production, consumers are demanding more variety, choice and convenience alongside higher standards of safety and wholesomeness at affordable prices. Meeting these consumer expectations can only be
achieved using modern food processing technologies which include the use of a variety of food additives proven effective and safe through long use and rigorous testing. Additives carry out a variety of useful functions which we often take for granted. Foods are subjected to many environmental conditions, such as temperature changes, oxidation and exposure to microbes, which can change their original composition. Food additives play a key role in maintaining the food qualities and characteristics that consumers demand, keeping food safe, wholesome and appealing from farm to fork. Food additives are very carefully regulated and the general criteria for their use is that they perform a useful purpose, are safe and do not mislead the consumer.Food additives play an important role in today’s complex food supply.
How is the safety of food additives evaluated in Europe? All food additives must have a demonstrated useful purpose and undergo a rigorous scientific safety evaluation before they can be approved for use. Until the creation of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), the safety evaluation of additives in Europe was done by the Scientific Committee on Food (SCF). At present, it is the EFSA Panel on Food Additives, Flavourings, Processing Aids and Materials in Contact with Food (AFC Panel), who is in charge of this task. At an international level there is a Joint Expert Committee, from the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and the World Health Organisation (WHO), on Food Additives ( JECFA). Assessments are based on reviews of all available toxicological data in both humans and animal models. From the available data, the maximum level of additive that has no demonstrable toxic effect is determined. This is called the “noobserved-adverse-effect level” (NOAEL) and is used to determine the “Acceptable Daily Intake” (ADI) for each food additive. The ADI provides a large safety margin and is the amount of a food additive that can be consumed daily over a lifetime without any adverse effect on health. The SCF before and now the European Food Safety Authority, encourage the lowest pos-
sible levels of an additive in a food. To ensure people do not exceed the ADI by consuming too much of, or too many products containing a particular additive, EU legislation requires that studies are done to look at the ranges of intakes across a population and to address any changes in consumption patterns. Occasional intakes over the ADI are unlikely to cause any harm because of the 100-
The Codex Alimentarius Commission, a joint FAO/WHO activity which develops guidelines for food safety globally, is also drawing up new “General Standards for Food Additives” (GSFA), with the aim of establishing a harmonised, workable and indisputable international standard for world trade. Only those additives that have been evaluated by the JECFA are included.
Food additives play a key role in maintaining the food qualities and keeping food safe, wholesome and appealing from farm to fork. Thanks to strict regulation and thorough testing, food additives can be considered safe components in our diet that are contributing to the rapid evolution of the food supply in Europe and throughout the world

fold safety margin. However, if the ADI might be exceeded by particular sectors of the population, the Commission would assess the need to review levels in foods or reduce the range of foods in which the additive is then permitted for use.
A true single market for food products could not exist without harmonised rules for authorisation and conditions for the use of additives. In 1989, the European Community adopted a Framework Directive (89/107/EEC) which set out the criteria by which additives would be assessed and provided for the adoption of three specific technical directives: Directive 94/35/EC on sweeteners; Directive 94/36/EC on colours and Directive 95/2/EC on ad-
ditives other than sweeteners and colours. These three directives establish the list of additives which could be used (to the exclusion of others), the foods in which they could be used and any maximum levels. The purity required for these additives is laid down in directives defining specific purity criteria.
What is an E-number? An E-number signifies approval of an additive by the EU. To obtain an E-number, the additive must have been fully evaluated for safety by the SCF or the European Food Safety Authority. The E-number system also serves as a simple and convenient way to label permitted additives across the range of languages in the European Union. To see the list of permitted additives with an E-number.
Do food additives cause hyperactivity? In the 1970s, some researchers suggested that changes in diet had coincided with a rise in the number of children with behaviour problems. The idea that food additives, and food colours in particular, could be linked to hyperactivity generated much interest and considerable controversy. Scientific studies have found no association between food additives, including food colours and behavioural problems or hyperactivity. The evidence in the current scientific literature gives no support for elimination diets primary therapy for behavioural problems. 37

Typographic Poster Brief: Design of a poster for an exhibition of famous graphic designer Paul Rand's work, imitating his distinctive style. The main message should be given over with type. His style: Simplicity was a common element of everything and anything Paul Rand created. He excelled at uniting letters, finding unique graphic ways of bringing together letters of a word. Solution: A minimal design with basic shapes, staying within the primary and secondary color palettes. The letters of his name are arranged and combined in an interesting way.

Ad Campaign Brief: Design of a series of advertisements for "thermolactyl" a brand of thermal winter wear and accessories, conveying that you can be comfortably warm no matter the weather. Solution: Paradoxical images of people dressed in winter attire in a snowy setting, doing a fun activity typical for summer, thereby bringing out the message very clearly. The color red is used, lending a sense of warmth and comfort to the overall design.
