ood is of course the starting point for a healthy lifestyle. Plan your meals in advance, in writing. Eating healthy can be a struggle: I want to eat that apple pie. I know I shouldn’t, but it looks so good. When you have your plan, you’re less likely to eat bad-news foods. Each day, check off meals as you go.

Don’t give yourself an option. Write NO CHOICE on a 3by 5-inch index card, keep it in your handbag, and look at it whenever you’re tempted to go off your food plan. Just toss out and purge all foods that could tempt you to go off your eating plan. Rearrange your cabinets. Move your smallest plates and bowls to the front of the cupboard so they’re easier to reach than the larger ones, which encourage us to overeat. Stay seated. Research shows that people tend to eat fewer calories when they’re sitting down. It makes sense: Having your food spread before you is more visually satisfying— and that’s the key to feeling
satisfied overall. It is important to slow down while you eat. Put down your utensils and take a sip of water after every few bites. Try timing your meal one night; make it last a little longer the next.

Don’t sweat the small slipups. If you eat a 400-calorie piece of cake, it’s not even going to show up at the end of the week. But if you get so down about that piece of cake that you chase it with an ice-cream sundae, a soft pretzel, and potato chips, it’s going to show up the next day. Change your definition of full. You should feel like you’d be able to easily take a moderate- to brisk-paced walk after a meal. Stop eating before you reach the point at which you wouldn’t feel comfortable doing that. Keep a brag book. Buy a small counter (the kind golfers use to keep track of their scores) and click it every time you make a good choice. At the end of the day, record the number in a notebook and congratulate yourself for all your good work. Use the “Oh, well” technique whenever you’re struggling, and say “Oh, well” to remind yourself that, while what you’re going through may not be fun, it’s necessary to achieve your goal weight.

hese weekday interval workouts have been designed to give you the most calorie-burn in the least amount of time—and to work around your busy schedule. Three days per week, choose one of the following 15-minute walks and complete it twice that day, either all at once or at two different times. If the workouts are too challenging at first, substitute two moderate 15-minute walks each day until you get more fit. (Just be sure to do 5 minutes of easy walking to warm up before and cool down after each walk.) One method is to alternate brisk and moderate walking between landmarks (speed up to the mailbox, slow down to the telephone pole, etc.) for 15 minutes. Another method is to alternate moderate walking, brisk walking, and jogging for 40 seconds each; that equals 1 cycle. Do a total of 3 cycles, walk slowly for 3 minutes, then do 3 more cycles. Alternatively, find a long hill and walk briskly uphill for 2 minutes, then walk back down at a moderate or easy pace. Repeat the process, walking uphill for 3 minutes, then for 2 minutes. If you have extra time at weekends you could do one of these 50-minute walks on Saturday and one on Sunday. Both burn megacalories, so you’ll still lose weight even

Some people say you should be spending eighty or ninety percent of your waking hours working on your thesis. Others (myself included) think that this is unrealistic and unhealthy, and that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s important for your mental and physical health to have other active interests.

1R 3OD\ your life is to develop a schedule thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s more or less consistent. You may decide that you will only work during the days, and that evenings are for your hobbies. Or you might decide that afternoons are for socializing and exercising, and work late at night. I decided very early on in graduate school
If you have a family, you will have to balance your priorities even more carefully. Graduate school isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t worth risking your personal relationships over; be sure that you save time and energy to focus on the people who matter to you. One of the keys to balancing
that weekends were for me, not for my thesis, and I think it helped me to stay sane. Many graduate students hit the doldrums around the end of the second or beginning of the third year, when
coursework and trying to focus in on a thesis topic. Sometimes this process can take quite a while. enjoyable activities that can take your mind off of the thesis. Sing in a choir, learn a foreign language, study the history of ancient Greece, garden, or knit. If you schedule regular activities (rehearsals, tennis lessons), you will probably aimlessly from day to day. your thesis, though, you will almost certainly have less time for social activities than you used to. Your friends may start to make you feel guilty, whether they intend to or not. Warn them in advance that you expect to turn down lots

With recent layoffs, the remaining employees work harder. The harder they work, the more they need a break. But with layoffs in their rearview mirrors and the fear of more ahead, the less likely they are to allow themselves to take one.

It would be great if that breathing room included more than the typical few weeks of paid vacation. My recent four-month â&#x20AC;&#x153;breakâ&#x20AC;? was just the right amount of time I needed to decompress, to shift my mental and physical energies away from the world of work. True, I wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t classify my maternity leave as downtime (I read a grand total of one book for fun), but when I returned to work I felt reenergized simply because I had experienced some sustained relief from the inherent stress involved in switching between work and home. A weekâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s vacation here and there over the course of the year doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t provide enough time to allow your mind to leave work behind-particularly for executives who canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t go to the can without taking their cell phones along (you know who you are).
