ENTWINED CONNECTIONS

MIXED USE HOUSING

Entwined Connections serves to be an innovative adaptive reuse of the Corbin Building In New York City. How does one approach an intervention into an existing building that already serves a marker for the character of New York? The new housing units swarm as studio, one story, two story lofts, interlocking and stacking down towards the multicultural public space.

i.1 Unit Formation

New units are nestled into the existing facade, scaffolded by a parasitic wire framework. The unit nestles into and gradually protrudes across the façade as the framework system transitions from thinner framework of the exterior railings aid mullions into the thickened interior walls for the units.

SKEUMORPHIC PROJECTIONS

CAR SHOWROOM FOR THE ESCAPE OF MIGRANT WORKERS

Skeumorphic Projections plays on notions of the Skeumorphic within the context of Dubai. Skeuomorphism also exists in Dubai as an imitation of opulence, where qualities of shininess, ornamentation, and the color gold exist on various levels of the socioeconomic spectrum. Therefore the project seeks to challenge perceptions of power, opulence, and luxury by offering hybridized forms, extracting those qualities and juxtoposing them in strange conditions. Through the imitation of various elements such as stitching, fabric softness, and metallic hardness, we hope to subvert material and formal expectations in the project.

ii.1 Techniques from the Lamborghini

Using the Lamborghini as the source of the design language, this model focuses on the sinousity and facets of the car, reinterpreting the language into a potential architectural form. Two elements of the Lamborghini were considered, the interior soft upholstery and the exterior hard shell. The interior and exterior is merged, where seams splits the forms apart, and stitches connect them together.

ii.2 _ Dubai’s Worker Crisis

Migrant workers are signed onto work in Dubai, without their knowledge of how long they are to stay. Migrant workers are exploited from thier inability to read or write, which inadvertently makes them sign contracts that would lead to thier entrapment. Workers are then trapped in Dubai as a form of indentured servitude, with no legal basis to return home to their families.

ii.3 Skeumorphic Spaces

This project proposes to train migrant workers in car mechanics and service, while the building secretly (and skeumorphically) houses the migrant workers, which then the project facilitates their ability to escape. Secret tunnels, deceptive thickness in walls, and subversive expectiations in spatial qualities all serve to misalign expectations with space, materiality and structure.

AND PUSHING

DANCING DIAGONALS

PAVILLION FOR CONTEMPLATION

Dancing Diagonals focuses on a small architectural structure that plays with leaning frames and layered facades. Made out of mostly glass, the pavillion celebrates the layers of structure that dances across the facade. It is a space for contemplation where the shimmering layer glass reflects the occupant and encourages to see one self.

Diagonals are big motif both structurally and through the seams and edges of the glass connections. The two layers of leaning frames are tilted at different angles. This effect is juxtaposed with the triangulated glass where the seams of the glass interplay with the structure.

iv. DUPLICITOUS ACCESS

MUSEUM EXTENSION

Duplicitous Access is concerned with how architecture can subvert ways we view displayed art and artifacts. Here, objects of display appear in view from juxtaposing programs, without allowing the observer a clear idea on how to access the displayed object. For example, one can view an artifact from a reading room or the lobby or even the restroom, while the displayed object exists in a different space. Visually, these displayed objects are discovered or aligned into view with the aid of optical illusions that prompt the observer to snap the illusion in place.

iv.1 Spatial Subversion from Exterior

The project plays on deceptive textures onto a mass. The texture serves to allure the visitor into the building, while alluding to the spatial quality inside the mass. Boolean operations from projected diagrams allow for the formal exploration of the atrium space.

There are 8 vantage points in which the illusions are seen from. The textures project onto the ground as well as the massing. The projected image itself is a pseudo-peerspectival illusion that has comprised of a black and white alpha, which serves as a marker for any material

PETALS AND PALETTES

ORGANIC COSMETICS FARM

Petals and Palettes seeks to intervene into Ojai, California’s agricultural landscapes, drawing inspiration from Albert Hoffman’s graphic techniques to cultivate a unique visual language. Various notations, inspired by pixel farming and zone overlap, signify potential planting spots and the cohabitation of varying plant species. The project distills pixel farming methods into speculative drawings and models, bridging the gap between abstract representation and practical farming experiences.

iii.1 Notations, Zones, etc.

The physical models serve as three-dimensionalizing the initial black and white diagram studies, studying overlap of zones and varying notations of pluses, stars, circles, and Xs. Color is then introduced to inspire ideas on crops and vegetation, which is then used to compose the “picturesque”.

FALLEN WINDOW

A CONCRETE WINDOW OPENING

Fallen Window is a concrete panel that plays on notions of how a window can be expressed. The window can be expressed beyond its opening, and can begin to express a tale as to its origins, through relief and impressions onto the form. The final output was cast as a 10 feet tall panel, weighing over 2000 lbs.

UNHINGED

GRASSHOPPER FARM FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION

Unhinged begins with the game of how to utilize the existing airrights of the neighboring buildings. Doing so will create a new postured form on the site. Therefore, the project brings the notion of hinging in order to organize and cantilever varying masses on the site. Through hinging, these masses hinge apart to create exterior cracks and hinge inward to create interior overlap.

STICKY BOXES

A COMPOSITIONAL FIGURE-GROUND STUDY

Sticky Boxes is a figure ground study on the play of exterior and interior. Boxes mirror and rotate about each other, allowing the arcs to create transition spaces to connect one box to another. The oval was studied as the result of overlapping circles, which then is used to slice through the figure-ground diagram to impose exterior conditions.

TRANSIENT PERMANANCE vii.

Transient Permanance aims to revitalize a block of Callowhill that has been neglected thus far by the revitalization efforts. But despite the frequent traffic in the area, there are currently no eateries within two blocks of our site. The project proposes a gathering place for food trucks, with a particular emphasis on international flavors to suit a multicultural neighborhood that already boasts American, Asian, and Latin American cuisines, placing heavy emphasis on the adaptability of our site for night programming and pop-up bars.

vii.1 Landmark for the Neighborhood

The central location of our site lends itself as an anchor for the flow of traffic around the area. Despite the temporal nature of visitors and food trucks, the structure itself will remain a landmark for the neighborhood that can be utilized for all types of gatherings at any time. This antithetical balance is also perpetuated within the structure. The painted steel frame is heavy and solid on its own, but when paired with glass and LED lighting, it takes on a transient and evanescent quality.

To Whom This May Concern:

It is my pleasure to recommend Khang Truong for employment within your organization Khang was a Project Design Intern at TWA during the summer of 2023.

Khang is very bright and highly motivated, and he maintains a constructive approach to challenges During his time in my office, he helped with a variety of design and produc tion tasks for several fast-moving and complex architectural projects. His work included developing or thographic drawing sets, 3D Rhino modeling, 3D printing, model assembly, and assembling a library of Rhino assets sourced from previous office projects Khang proved to be a quick learner and a hard worker, and his software skills are top notch.

I am confident that Khang will be an asset to any office he joins after graduation I recommend him without reservation Please feel free to reach out if you need additional information

Sincerely,
