Welcome
This past year our corner of the state has seen a substantial amount of devastation after Hurricanes Laura and Delta. Many of us are rebuilding our businesses, homes and our lives. We know this will be a year of growth and resilience as we come together and pick up the pieces left from the storms.

Meet the Builder Ken Robbins Robbins Contracting Ken Robbins owner and operator of Robbins Contracting. Residential Building contractor, building custom and spec homes since 1990. We also do commercial contracting specializing in metal studs, sheetrock, suspended ceilings and EIFS. A member of SW Louisiana Home Builders Association since 1990, serving as President several terms and serve as a voting builder member on the State Association Home Builders Board. I am also the SWL Association Director for the State SIF Workman’s Compensation program. I started my business in 1990 after working 10 years as a construction manager for a commercial building contractor. We are located in Moss Bluff on the corner of Old Hwy. 171 and Theriot Rd.
What made you become a builder? I saw a need for a quality builder in the area. My wife and I work as a team. I use my experience in construction and project management. She uses her ideas for color coordination and design. We strive to build a quality house at a fair price. We have my son and daughter in-law as well as some other family members working for us. We are proud to be a family business for the last three decades.
What do you love most about building in SWLA? We enjoy working with different people on building their dream homes here in SWLA.
What is your best advice for someone interested in having a new home built or remodeled? Choose a builder that you feel comfortable with. Ask lots of questions and expect detailed answers. We meet with our home building clients before and throughout the construction process. We try to simplify the decision making process in the different stages of construction, helping in any way we can. Building a new home is a several month process that requires a good working relationship, sometimes leading to life long friendships.
What is one thing you want potential clients to know about? Each and every home we build is built as if we were building our own home. We don’t take shorts cuts, or use cheap building materials. We want our homes to stand the test of time and even a few storms.
If you were building yourself a new home, what would be the thing you’d be most excited to put in it? Since my wife and I also own Moss Bluff Floors, we enjoy putting in the current trends of floors, shower design, backsplashes and finishing touches. We like the open concept design in today’s homes. We hope to give each customer a quality built home with all of the design details they envision. 4 DESIGN & BUILD 2021

Protect Your Home and Yard from Pests Provided by J&J Exterminating
Your Home is your personal sanctuary, your refuge from the world. You’ve worked hard to create an environment that your family can enjoy. You and your home shouldn’t have to be at the mercy of annoying insects and their painful or destructive bites. Fortunately, there are exterminators to tackle them.
TERMITES - Exterminators have some very effective weapons against termite infestation of your home and/or business. They have systems that are effective in preventing termite infestation as well as controlling existing colonies. Your technician will work with you to determine the best protection for you. MOSQUITOES - Reclaim your yard with effective mosquito control. There are one-time treatments, a great option if you have an event in your yard, or a virtually undetectable misting system for ongoing protection. There are things you can do to make your yard less inviting to mosquitoes. Since mosquito larvae float on top of still water in order to hatch, by eliminating the standing water, you’ll discourage mosquitoes from thriving in your yard. You can also: clean out standing water from gutters, mow tall grass, trim overgrown bushes, change water in bird baths every few days, and store buckets and flower pots upside down to avoid having them collect water.
ANTS & FIRE ANTS - Ant bites can hurt long after the initial bite because of the venom they inject into your bloodstream. Pest control professionals know just how to kill ants using pesticides and ant traps. WASP & HORNETS - Taking on a colony of flying soldiers can be dangerous, and deadly depending on your allergies. When airborne insects threaten your family’s safety and comfort, don’t put yourself in harms way. Let the professionals handle it.
SNAKES - Snakes can be hazardous to you, your family and your pets (not to mention are very creepy). Snakes can get into very tight spaces to hunt for mice and other small rodents. Unlike most creatures, snakes will stand and fight, no matter how big their opponent. Play it safe and call an exterminator to remove them. Whatever pests prowl southwest Louisiana you can find an exterminator who can help keep them away from your home. 30 DESIGN & BUILD 2021

2021 Vision for Home Design - 7 Hot Trends Provided by Acme Brick With a new year and decade just ahead, it’s time to gaze into the Acme Brick home design crystal ball. Our 2021 list was compiled from hundreds of home design websites, blogs, media reports and well-respected designers, such as Aida Sniraite. She succinctly notes: “Today we are tired of touchscreens, unwelcoming light in public spaces and offices. That’s why we are seeking refuge, a cozy, warm space where we can feel well.”
1. MOVING VS. REMODELING “Homeowners nationwide are remaining in their homes typically 13 years, five years longer than they did in 2010,” according to a new analysis by real-estate brokerage Redfin. Ripple effects of this change include more people deciding to update their current residence with more stylish kitchens, baths, and entertainment rooms - and expanding the footprint of their homes by creating more outdoor entertainment spaces.
2. NOW AND ZEN: MINDFULNESS AT HOME Marie Kondo’s best-selling book, “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up,” tapped into something powerful: mindfulness as an antidote to day-to-day noise and visual chaos. How does this translate to home design? • Ensure that every object has a purpose. • Create a tech-free meditation space- often known as an R&R space. • Choose harmonious colors so that each room is in harmony with the others. • Let in natural light to boost mental health.
3. THE BATH IS BACK Double floating vanities, which allow for easier cleaning, will be on the wish-list for homeowners building or renovating. Non-toilet seating, in the form of built-in benches or individual chairs, will finally come to the throne room. Decorative tile, especially white beveled subway tile on the walls and tub apron, help create a cohesive design while adding shimmer and texture.
5. KITCHEN AS A FAMILY ROOM As the “meeting place” for family and guests, the kitchen remains a focal point of the house and a priority for designers and homeowners. The editors of Houzz magazine receive thousands of photographs of kitchens each year, and these images suggest several trends that will sizzle in 2021: • More than 40 percent of homeowners STILL choose white cabinets. In order to keep this from being boring, a few darker wooden drawers are being added for wine racks and other storage. • Open shelving cabinetry will continue to thrive. • Vertical wood pull-outs of darker wood which flank the range are also gaining popularity. • Kitchens that flow seamlessly to the dining area are a continuation of popular open concept. The 2021 colors of kitchens are described as “soft.” This includes demure satin-brass fixtures and light marble backsplashes. Because the kitchen is a busy entertainment space, having lots of seating around the still-popular prep island is a must-have.
6. A GROUND FLOOR OPPORTUNITY Flooring has become a great way to set the tone for each room in the house. In 2021, the choices of flooring - from natural to synthetic - are almost unlimited.
7. ENTERTAINMENT SPACE IN THE GREAT OUTDOORS For many homeowners, the best “room” in the house is outside. With high-end grills, brick fireplaces and pizza ovens, big-screen entertainment systems, fire and water features, entertaining outdoors is great indeed!
4. COLORFUL TRENDS 2021 will be defined by soothing tones from oranges and pinks to blues and greens in both warm and cool hues – “meant to offer restorative balance to the interiors they coat,” said one expert, “in a bid to promote health and wellness.” As for brick, Jeremy Emler of Acme Brick notes that the softer hues, such as grey and off-white are still the most popular. 22 DESIGN & BUILD 2021

There are Great Options for Window Treatments Provided by Budget Blinds Get inspired and surround yourself with today’s most beautiful and popular design trends for your windows. Regardless of your decorating style, it helps to understand the vast array of window treatments available and their functions, and how they help create a look that reflects your personal style. When choosing window treatments, consider the many benefits, such as privacy, light control, UV protection, energy efficiency, and child safety.
WOOD BLINDS Their clean line design works with any style room; mount them alone or pair them with drapery panels. Wood blinds add warmth, character, and dimension, while providing privacy and light control. If the look of wood is desired, but humidity is a concern, composite or faux wood blinds are a good alternative.
PLANTATION SHUTTERS Shutters may be the most timeless and versatile window coverings and always make a statement. They are like custom made furniture for your windows. They are perfect for a sunny bedroom, look crisp in a kitchen, or can add drama to a den. Also, shutters work well in either classic or modern rooms, are available in a wide assortment of colors, frames, and louver size. They can even be made to fit unusual shaped windows, such as arches, angles, and octagons. French door cutouts are available in several styles.
SHADES Shades provide the largest variety of color, style, and function. Some types are: • Roller Shades - today’s roller shades are not like your grandmother’s. Like a favorite “little black dress,” roller shades are a classic that complement any décor. Designer inspired fabrics work with any décor and look great layered with draperies. • Woven Wood Shades - made from eco-friendly organic materials. The shades add a new level of softness and natural beauty. The texture of these layered with drapery panels will create a warm, elegant look. • Solar Shades – are perfect for patios and sunrooms. They deflect the sun’s rays providing UV protection for your furnishings and help cool the room, reducing energy costs.
DRAPERIES To transform a room and create a custom look, choose custom draperies. With all the colors, textures, and patterns available, you can express your personal style. By adding embellishments and decorative hardware, you’ll have a truly custom look that’s nothing short of amazing. Many of these options can be cordless or motorized with smart home apps to create a more carefree and convenient environment for your home.

hen it comes to picking out the centerpiece for a room, everyone starts with the color. White marble countertops seem to be the premier choice. With its high fashion look and trademark veining, white marble was instantly crowned king of the stone world, but its yearly maintenance and daily cleaning requirements can be a bigger hassle than some buyers want. Fear not, there is a durable, hassle-free alternative that is currently sweeping the market–Quartz. This is an engineered stone made up of ground quartz, which is then combined with polyester resins to bind it and pigments to give it color.

For years, Quartz had a bad name due to lack of color, pigment, finish or detail options, but that is no longer the case. You can now select from an enormous range of colors and patterns including marble-looks, limestonelooks, and concrete-looks. Don’t just be picky with the color, how about the finish? Leather, polished or even honed, the feel can make all the difference. Engineered Stone is made from one of the hardest materials in the world, making your daily family messes a concern of the past. With options ranging from Cambria to Ceasarstone and exclusive selections of Polar Stone, Teltos and Obious, you are provided with every option you could possibly need. With the highest level of craftsmanship and state of the art technology you can bring any design dream to life. How to Handle Home Renovations Provided by Southern Bath & Kitchen The majority of home owners in the Lake Area are going through some form of home renovations. Home renovations can be overwhelming. Where to start? What rooms should you tackle first? Should you do a complete overhaul, or just a few updates? Can we do it ourselves, or should we hire someone? First thing you should come up with is a realistic budget for your family’s needs. For most people, the kitchen is the hearth of the home. Maybe you are a large family and you need more room for your family dinners. Maybe you’re a family that likes to host events and holidays, and needs a large buffet area for all of your dips and desserts. Or maybe you like the way your kitchen is now, and all you want is a new sink and faucet to add a new spark of life to it. What about that bathroom remodel that always seems to be pushed onto the “around to it” list? One of the best ways to increase a home’s value is to remodel a bathroom, but we all know what kind of pain that can be, and it can end up costing much more than you anticipated. New bathroom fixtures, a new freestanding bathtub, a walk-in tile shower, and before you know it you’ve exceeded the budget you had planned. Maybe all your bathroom needs are some new faucets, towel bars, toilet paper holder, and a new vanity mirror to improve the space. No matter how big or small your bath and kitchen renovation project or budget is, we can help you turn those ideas into your new favorite rooms in your home. Stop by our showroom and realize just how easy a bath and kitchen renovation can be. 26 DESIGN & BUILD 2021

How to Protect You & Your Family from Mosquitoes Provided by Mosquito Authority When performed properly by trained mosquito control professionals, back yard mosquito treatments can help to reduce the danger and risk posed by disease-carrying mosquitoes, but there are things every homeowner can do to help protect themselves and their family in their own backyard. • DRAIN. Remove all standing water; a mosquito only needs about a tablespoon of standing water to lay her eggs. Common locations for standing water include: •C logged rain gutters and corrupted drainpipes: Consider installing a gutter screen over your new gutters to prevent the collection of leaves. •B ird baths, pet bowls, and planters: You should routinely flush these areas with fresh water or use a larvicidal granules or dunks in areas that you are unable to do so. • Children’s toys and kiddie pools: These items should be kept free of water when not in use. • DRESS. Loose-fitting, light-colored clothing (and long pants & sleeves when appropriate) is best. Mosquitoes can bite through loose-weave and tight-fitting clothing. • DEFEND. EPA-registered repellents are reviewed & approved to pose minimal risk when used properly. The most effective repellents include DEET, Picaridin, Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus, or IR3535 as one of the active ingredients. Be sure to stick with topical applications. Wrist bands, patches, and bug zappers are not recognized as effective ways to repel mosquitoes. Creams, sprays, or liquids applied directly to the skin are best. Also, be sure to always follow the instructions. Please note that repellents are not recommended for babies younger than 2 months old and products containing Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus should not be used on children younger than 3 years old. Lastly, a useful landscaping tip if you are considering using a professional mosquito control company is to plant shrubbery and plants around your outdoor seating areas, helping to create a barrier. Low-to-the ground, broad-leaf shrubbery is recommended to get the most out of your mosquito control application. 30 DESIGN & BUILD 2021

represented in tones of neutral, tan, gray, dark chocolate, white, or black. Color is always important, and, when bold color is used, its choice should be used with caution. A touch of modern is a must in my interior appointments, regardless of how traditional a space may lean. Mixing the unexpected adds increased interest and conversation to the space. Minimalistic is often the key to a fresh look, while the days of chachkies are long gone. Area rugs and carpet are important in completing a desired look. You either build the design around a fabulous rug pattern or the rug must remain controlled in color and design. Less is always more in 26 DESIGN & BUILD 2021
design. The ultimate goal is to add less into the space while being certain that everything you add is needed to make the design better. Tailored interiors tend to be the most timeless of all. They are gender neutral and always lean toward the sophisticated. Wall coverings are a must in totally transforming a space and the varied offerings are spectacular. Often, I select a very high-end covering for a feature wall that will totally transform the space while remaining within budget. My final word of advice, always take a picture of the space and review it carefully. If it looks too busy in the picture, edit out items; if it looks perfect, then you listened!!! Cheers!!! Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, the contagious passion Breaux has for reinventing sophisticated settings has earned the attention of prominent New Yorkers and international power brokers who frequently desire turn-key service. The award-winning designer captured the attention of Architectural Digest and the Wall Street Journal for one of her Manhattan masterpieces for Trump International Realty. The 4,200-square-foot residence, in Trump Park Avenue, sold for a cool $14 million just two weeks after her design completion. Other projects for the Trump organization have included a stunning 8,000-square-foot apartment with a price tag of $35 million. Breaux also fashioned a chic abode in Manhattan for President Donald Trump’s daughter, Tiffany. “It’s her first apartment in the city, and it has amazing views,” she says. “It was in the renovation stage. We worked directly with Tiffany, and decorated it with our custom furniture, while utilizing a cleansed, light color palette.” Working on various projects for the Trump Organization for several years, Breaux’s affiliation with the first family began well before the presidential election. Breaux’s ongoing projects for the Trumps have included working with clients worldwide; the most recent completed project features “The Estates at Mar a Lago” in Palm Beach, Florida. Monique’s work has been lauded by publications such as Teen Vogue, Haute Living, Hampton’s Magazine, New Orleans Magazine, and The Robb Report. Her designs were also featured in the books Visions of Design and Luxurious Interiors, and on multiple HGTV shows. POSH Exclusive Interiors was voted the #1 Design Firm of 2015 by the Times of Acadiana, and Monique has been named as one of the People to Watch by New Orleans Magazine and Best Interior Designer in New Orleans on BuildDirect.com. “Monique’s attention to detail and unending creativity are among the best in the field. Her designs reflect her dedication to making people’s lives better and more functional. Just like Monique herself, they’re a delight!” Megan Winkler, Editor Luxurious Interior.

An Alternative Option for Your Countertops Provided by Stone Koat Kreations LLC Epoxy countertops are an alternative to granite, marble, and natural stone countertops. Unlike natural stone, epoxy has no seams, it’s just one continuous, smooth surface. Also, there’s little to no maintenance, due to there’s no sealing it after pouring it. Once it’s poured, it’s finished. It’s also food grade safe and rated as a “Green” product, therefore it’s safe for the environment and doesn’t release radon gas, like some granite can. It has a heat resistance of 500°. Epoxy is not scratch proof, but it is scratch resistant. The durability is amazing and will last a lifetime. It can be poured on almost any surface; ceramic tile, formica, plywood, even granite or marble. There are two coats that are poured, the art coat, then the clear coat. There is a variety of colors and different effects that can be done during the art coat process that you cannot get with granite or marble. It can be as creative or as subtle as you desire. After the art coat is done and dried, a clear coat will then be poured. This second coat is what will give it a 3-D effect and leave it glossy and beautiful, looking like glass. If you want your own personalized art design, something no one else will ever have, epoxy countertops are the way to go. No two poured countertops will ever be the same, unlike granite. Jobs are not bid by the square foot, but by the job itself. Every kitchen and bathroom are different and some need more prep work than others. Epoxy countertops are not always cheaper than natural stone, but an alternative option to natural stone countertops. 36 DESIGN & BUILD 2021

What to Consider When Designing Your Kitchen to Meet Your Needs Provided by Stine Kitchen Design Pros If you’re remodeling a home, understand that a kitchen makeover can take two months on average. And, if you’re building a new home, it would be optimal to visit with your kitchen designer before the slab is poured. Reason being, small adjustments with rough opening placements (vanities, windows, etc.) and island plumbing can be requested of the contractor without incurring an increased expense. You should have an idea of the style you want. Bring in pictures from Pinterest, home decor magazines, etc. In addition to the overall style of cabinetry, there are many accessories and gadgets to consider including in your kitchen. Designers do not expect customers to provide all of the details, but it helps them get a feel for what style of kitchen you want. The next thing to consider is the desired monetary investment you wish to make in your home. There are many different great brands of cabinets at different price points: KraftMaid, Quality, WoodStar, Tru, MidContinent, Schrock, AristoKraft, and KitchenKompact. If you know that you’re going to be selling your home in a short period of time, you may not choose to invest in the most expensive cabinets. But if you’re going to be staying in your home for an extended period of time, enjoying your kitchen - as the social center of the home that it is - you may choose to invest a little more in your kitchen project. KraftMaid offers a tremendously well-constructed cabinet with a lifetime warranty. Depending on the door style you choose, you can control pricing to where it’s very affordable. At the same time, you can design a very glamorous kitchen using a more expensive species of wood, like cherry, that would increase the cost. KraftMaid offers everything that you can imagine to accessorize your kitchen cabinets and increase the functionality and storage. KraftMaid is a company that is so forward-thinking that they are coming up with storage solutions for problems that we didn’t even know existed! KraftMaid utilizes designers’ input to improve their offerings. The Breslin Door, designed by Stine Kitchen Designer David Grubb, is one of four doors introduced nationwide this year and is anticipated to be a top-seller. 38 DESIGN & BUILD 2021

How to Choose the Best Paint Colors and Quality Provided by South City Paint & Supply, Inc. Painting is a popular D-I-Y because few home improvement endeavors rival the impact of a fresh coat of paint for the price. On the other hand a botched job can bring tears. Most people can handle the job on their own, if they correctly prep, use the right tools and the right products. Paints, like many products, have evolved through the years. We now have access to a large range of colors and paints that are made for specific applications. Don’t be influenced by the trending colors or the colors of the year. When picking a color go with a color you’re sure to love for years to come. Bring in fabrics, flooring or other items to help you find the perfect color to match or coordinate. Never buy more paint than you need, consider investing in quality paint. It will cover better, and in the long run, it can save money by creating a more satisfactory finish and require less coats. Buy the best applicator you can afford. Buy small samples of several colors, you can test these colors on your walls or poster board in different light. Seeing those samples in different times of day will help you decide which color you like best.

NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF HOMEBUILDERS TIP:
Do your homework before you start your next building project.
3Contact your local home
builders’ association for the names of member builders and remodelers nahb.org/findanhba.
3Make sure the builder has a
permanent business location and a good reputation with local banks and suppliers.
3Find out how long the builder
has been in the building business. It usually takes three to five years to establish a financially sound business. You want to make sure they will be around after the construction is complete to service any warranties.
3Check out the company’s
rating and if there have been any complaints filed with your local Better Business Bureau: bbb.org.
3Make sure the builder has
sufficient workers compensation and general liability insurance. If not, you may be liable for any construction-related accidents on your premises.
3Ask the builder to provide you
with names of previous customers. If they won’t beware. If they do, ask the customers if they would hire the builder/remodeler again.
3Ask if you can see the builder’s work, both completed and in progress. Check for quality of workmanship and materials.
3Do you feel you can easily
communicate with the builder? Remember you will be in close contact with them throughout the construction process and afterward as you live in your new home.
3Make sure the builder provides
you with a complete and clearly written contract. The contract will benefit both of you. If you are having a new home built, get and review a copy of the home warranty and homeowner manual as well.
3Be cautious of unusually low-
priced bids. If the builder is unable to pay for the materials and labor as the project proceeds, this may indicate a potential problem. Keep in mind that less expensive does not necessarily mean better!
3Verify that your remodeler is an
EPA Lead-Safe Certified Renovator if you are planning work in a pre1978 home that will disturb more than six square feet of painted surfaces inside the home or 20 square feet on the exterior of the home.

The Benefits of a Natural Gas Standby Generator The Benefits of a Natural Gas Standby Generator
Provided by CenterPoint Energy
With a total of 31 tropical and subtropical depressions, 30 named storms, and 13 hurricanes — six of which were considered
major — the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season has been the most active in history. Of the 30 named storms this season, 12 made landfall in the United States, breaking the record of nine set in 1916. Louisiana residents know all too well that five of those storms made landfall in their state. Once a storm passes, electric utility employees mobilize around the clock to restore power. But repairing and restarting a power grid can take days or even weeks. This loss of power can create significant issues, including:
Air conditioning • Extreme high temperatures inside the home • Development of mold and mildew
Electronics • No electricity to charge phones or power radios or TVs • No computer or internet access • Loss of revenue for those who work from home
The benefits of investing in a natural gas generator include: 24/7 protection Natural gas standby generators automatically turn on when you have an outage and off when your power is restored whether you are home or not.
Ample power The generating capacity of a standby generator is measured in Kilowatts (KW). The higher the KW rating, the more power a generator can provide a home or business. Natural gas standby generators feature significantly higher KW ratings than portable gasoline generators, so they can power your entire home, including the air conditioner.
Steady voltage
• Home accidents and bodily injuries
Natural gas standby generators provide a consistent, steady voltage that protects sensitive appliances and home electronics such as computers, televisions, and gaming systems.
Medical needs
Hassle-free fuel
Lights
• No refrigeration for medicines • Power assisted medical devices not charged • Respiratory difficulties
Refrigerator/freezer • Added cost to replace spoiled food
Security • No contact with home security monitoring service • Less protection of family members • Home appears abandoned For customers who face these issues, a natural gas standby generator can be a smart investment in their comfort and peace of mind. Natural gas standby generators are a reliable, safe, and convenient source of standby power when storms, tree limbs, or planned line maintenance causes a power outage.
Natural gas standby generators use the same natural gas that serves your home. The fuel is connected directly to the generator and typically cost less than propane and much less than gasoline for emergency generation. Because natural gas lines are buried underground, they are less susceptible to damage from severe weather, so there is no need to stock up before or look for fuel after a storm.
Improved safety The American Red Cross recommends permanently installed standby generators as a safer way to provide backup power to a home than a portable generator. Plus, they avoid the need to attach long extension cords throughout the home, which can create tripping and electrical shock hazards.

Straight Talk about Big-Box Store Chemicals Provided by Pro Pools There is probably no more frequent question asked a pool professional than the difference between the chemicals sold in pool stores and what they can get at a big box store. The question is of course way too broad for a single article, but will try to lay out the things that matter most to anyone who owns a pool. You first need to intentionally set aside the single most valuable thing offered at a pool store, it totally separates them from big box stores, which is knowledge and experience. They are always giving the kind of personal and professional service to customers that you will likely never get down at the GiantValue-Box-Store where they probably don’t employ anyone with any real understanding of the chemicals they sell. What people really want to know, is whether the chemicals that they sell at X-Mart are as good as at a professional pool store. The answer is that, well it depends. There are undeniably certain chemicals which are exactly the same, regardless of what label they carry or where they are purchased. Alkalinity increaser, which is pure Sodium Bicarbonate (Baking Soda), is a good example. Muriatic Acid is another. These are basic, common chemicals, available for many uses, which are repackaged for use in pools but in reality, are chemically identical. You would probably never know the difference. When it comes to specialty chemicals there is really no comparison. You will generally not find things like phosphate removers, stain removers or specialty algaecides to fight persistent mustard or black algae, (the gallon jug of algae 10 notwithstanding). You probably wouldn’t even know if you

needed it considering the national chain retailers don’t offer water testing, so lets skip those as well. Things however, can get complicated when we start comparing chlorine. There are so many different chlorine products on the market and they are all different. The basic chlorine question can be boiled down into two categories. The first is the question of overall value (assuming a direct, apples to apples comparison). This will be addressed later in this article. The second category is appropriateness of the product. This is even a more significant question because here, we have to define the apple. The chlorine molecule can be delivered a number of different ways using different chemical compositions. There seems to have been a little “bait and switch” going on by national retailers when it comes to chlorine shock. Different chlorine compounds have a different use, and each has their own set of pros and cons. The big difference is the PH of the product, but even more so is the chemical residual left over after it has dissolved. Without getting overly technical, Calcium-Hypochlorite is chlorine bound onto calcium chloride. When the chlorine has dissipated, the residual is calcium, which is beneficial to your pool. But there is another product commonly sold as shock, which is not so beneficial. More and more, we find people having serious issues with their pool after just a couple buckets of Tri-chlor or Di-chlor granules. It is sold using some fuzzy language. Sometimes it is sold as shock, other times it is just sold as granular chlorine, which the pool owner thinks is shock.
DESIGN & BUILD 2019 93
The problem with this product is that instead of a PH of 10 found in Cal-Hypo, it has a PH closer to 5. This can cause highly acidic pool water which can seriously damage your heater in a single season. Even more significantly, the residual compound in Tri-chlor and Di-chlor is cyanuric acid, a chemical that is helpful in small amounts but can quickly build up and will dramatically suppress the effect of chlorine. High cyanuric acid levels can reduce the effectiveness of your chlorine by a factor of ten, resulting in the need run chlorine well above safe levels just to suppress an algae bloom. Buyer beware. Big buckets with flashy labels can be deceiving. It is important to read the labels carefully, talk to a professional,
and know what you are buying to avoid these dangerous and expensive pitfalls. Working with pool store chemical suppliers, you will be pleased to know that some have just introduced the first highly effective Calcium Hypochlorite tablet feeder. This is a solution to a problem which has nagged the industry for years. A great deal goes into identifying risks and bringing new technologies onto the market to resolve such issues. When it comes to a head to head comparison, professional pool stores are better at what they do than the big box stores. They build safety, beauty and value into everything they do. Selecting the Perfect Color of Brick Provided by Mike Baker Brick When selecting brick for your personal home, there are really no do’s or don’ts. Sure, there will be certain colors or styles that will be trendy for awhile and then will fade out, but what ultimately matters is that YOU are happy with what you see. Mortar colors can significantly change the look of brick; white mortar will allow the colors of the bricks to “pop” more so if you’re looking for the brick to stand out on your home, showcase it using white mortar. Mortar application also plays a role in the overall appearance of your brick. If you like more of vintage look, a light mortar sack would be ideal. Wider Mortar joints are also desirable for achieving this look. If you are building a spec home or are flipping a house for a quick sell, it’s always best to choose a neutral color brick so that it will flow with any color trim, roofing, windows, doors or shutters. By choosing a neutral color, the stress caused from searching for the “perfect” color scheme will be alleviated. 18 DESIGN & BUILD 2020

Fresh Start in 2021 – Out with the Old, In with the New Provided by The Grounds Guys Properly managed flower and shrub beds enhance the curb appeal of your home or business and contribute to the beautification of our community! Consider these key tips when making decisions about the landscape beds in your yard or commercial property:
MULCH Effective application of mulch improves the health of your bushes, trees and shrubs. Mulch also moderates temperature fluctuations, preserves soil moisture, reduces erosion, and suppresses weeds and pests. However, improper mulch application creates issues for your plants and landscape. Remove deteriorated mulch before adding more, to minimize rot and pests. Getting mulch depth right is also essential to its effectiveness. Generally, a 3 inch depth of mulch is ideal for most areas, but can vary depending upon soil and foliage type and specific conditions of your landscape. When in doubt, count on an experienced professional for mulch installation.
PLANTING SEASONAL COLOR Seasonal or annual plantings provide excellent opportunities to add color to your shrub and flower beds throughout the year! Generally, these areas of your beds need to be replanted twice per year with seasonally appropriate selections. An experienced professional will help choose foliage with pops of color all year round in Southwest Louisiana.
IRRIGATION It’s no secret that summers in Southwest Louisiana are HOT! There are many shrubs and trees that will tolerate heat well, but optimal plant health requires water to be delivered. Seasonal color plantings are more sensitive and need irrigation to ensure the plants will remain healthy. There are many options for bed irrigation systems, and most can be installed by a professional in a day or less. WEED ABATEMENT If you have landscape beds, then you will also have weeds to control. There are many strategies for controlling weeds, but the key is consistency. Weed growth must be monitored and addressed continuously to keep your beds in tip-top shape. If you prefer to spend your weekends with family and friends, then professional weed abatement is a great option. PRUNING Shrubs and ornamental trees are excellent additions to landscape beds, and with proper care will provide years of beauty! These plants do need to be pruned regularly to maintain proper shape and remove diseased or unwanted growth. With attention to these 5 areas of landscape bed management, your home or business will look great year-round! 56 DESIGN & BUILD 2021

What Floors Work Best For Your Home Provided by Kenny Fuselier & Company If you’re looking to remodel your home and wanting a real wood floor without the real wood price and upkeep, there are several options to choose from. You can go with a luxury vinyl which comes in many different colors, textures and can also be glued or floated. These products are virtually water and damage proof and come at a much lower price than real wood although they look just as beautiful. If your preference is something a little sturdier, there are plenty of options of a wood-look ceramic or porcelain tile as well. However, if you would like to go with real wood, you could choose from many different collections such as maple, acacia, pine, oak, which are inspired by nature and come hand scraped or smooth surface.

UPDATE YOUR
BATHROOM
BATHROOMS ARE GETTING LARGER AND MORE DESIGN NOTEWORTHY, TAKE A LOOK AT A FEW THAT CAUGHT OUR ATTENTION.
A
s we see bathrooms continue to expand, it’s obvious that their purpose is no longer just for hygiene. The modern bathroom is as much a place to relax, get comfortable and enjoy downtime as it is to brush your teeth. As this room becomes more useful, it also becomes more beautiful. Homeowners are paying closer attention to fine details like lighting, tile, materials and finishes in order to truly make their bathrooms a luxurious retreat. Twenty years ago people rarely wanted to “show off the bathroom,” but
these days, it is often the star of the home. Take a look at a few bathrooms that we think have star power and the design trends that make them shine.
Clean and Refined Just like the spas we love, a bathroom with clean lines and zero clutter provides a peaceful sensory experience. But refined doesn’t mean cold and clinical. Warm neutrals with a pop of bold color and a mix of natural textures and objects will do the trick. DESIGN & BUILD 2021 59
Texture and Pattern Have fun with bathroom tile to create layers of texture. Herringbone patterns in stone are huge and are the latest twist on subway tile. Vintage Wash A vintage approach to design is still all the rage whether it is conveyed through mirrors, light fixtures, exposed plumbing or patterns. The good news–this trend is definitely timeless.

Wood for Warmth Wood provides a warm, neutral backdrop for a look that’s sleek, and modern. Although it is not traditionally popular for a wet room, more and more homeowners are starting to use this material for vanities and accent walls.
Details Fixtures and surfaces are moving beyond simply utilitarian to include designs, colors and materials that are typically found in more traversed rooms like the kitchen.
The Tub Stays The freestanding tub isn’t going anywhere soon because if you enjoy taking a bath, it is a must-have to complete your spa-like atmosphere. Homeowners are moving their tubs to new locations– either situated directly inside a large shower or off on its own away from daily traffic. Placing the tub in its own zen-like area, possibly with a view, makes bathing a significant event.
Easily Accessible With baby boomers accounting for the largest share of home owners ready to renovate the master bath, many are incorporating aging in place accessibility. This means large showers with a zero threshold entry and easy to use controls. But the look is stylish and sleek for the rest of us too.
The Fine Details Explore using different materials, finishes and patterns that give your bath a wow factor. Install cabinets that are designed to mimic pieces of furniture–reclaimed pieces are especially popular right now. Add a towel warmer to give your bath a spa-like atmosphere. Have fun with knobs and pulls, which can be both functional and interesting. If you thought wallpaper was a thing of the past, think again. Wallcoverings are making a comeback in creative patterns and colors. DESIGN & BUILD 2021 61

Choosing and Caring for Your Fence Provided by Bravo Company LLC
STYLES
BRAVO
COMPANY LLC
Deciding on a fence style is one of the first and most important steps when choosing how to enclose your yard or property. There are some things to consider when beginning the search for the perfect style of fence. For fencing in large acreage, a three-rail fence is a beautiful way to enclose the property. For the residential yards, a shadowbox, picket, or plank fence with the planks running horizontally or vertically adds a nice touch. On larger residential yards, a nice picket fence in either pine or cedar would be beautiful as well. You can also add trim to your fence, however, on large runs, will people notice or see it? On smaller fences that enclose just a portion of the yard or where you entertain is where the style, trim and design work would really stand out, look good, and make a statement.
STAIN OR PAINT Once your fence is installed, care is needed to preserve the wood itself as well as the color. Pine is blonde with blues and grays, while cedar is white with shades of red. Both are beautiful but the color will fade if not taken care of properly. Applying a stain or a coat of paint every couple of years is a great way to achieve this and seal your fence. Pressure washing your fence once a year will help as well. Remember, you can paint over stain, but you cannot stain over paint.

EXTRAS There are countless ways to make your fence unique such as, having the posts showing with the panels inset or adding trim around the edges of the panels to make a bit of a 3D effect, allowing the panels to stand out. The posts can also be routed to give definition and design. So many options and the beautiful thing about building with wood is that if you can imagine it, there is a great chance we can build it. Ready, Set, Renovate! 4 Ways to Optimize the Value of Your Home Improvement Remodel Provided by Coburn Supply Company Each new year always brings the desire to start fresh. Sometimes, that means a simple spring refresh for a part of our home. Other times, it involves transforming a new house into a place all your own. Regardless of where you fall, making the most of your home improvement project is essential — for both your satisfaction and your investment. With building material costs on the rise and labor shortages, this isn’t always easy to do. According to Houzz, an online home design platform, the average kitchen remodel can cost as much as $18,989 in Lake Charles and surrounding areas. And that’s just the kitchen.
people often consider for remodeling include cabinets, lighting and countertops, with new countertops adding significant value for many homebuyers. For upgrading older linoleum countertops, consider engineered quartz over natural stone. In Monroe and surrounding areas, quartz countertops are gaining steam in remodel projects and new construction. Due to lacking a porous surface, quartz requires less maintenance and is more durable than natural stone options and often comes with more extended warranties than its natural counterparts.
Such a steep investment is enough to make your palms sweat. Are we allocating enough funds here? Are we penny pinching too much there? Are we overlooking something completely? Will I see the return on this investment in the long-run? These are all questions that will cross your mind. To help you address them, here are a few focus points to keep in mind during your renovation.
2. CHOOSE THE RIGHT APPLIANCES
1. FOCUS ON THE KITCHEN
If your budget allows, consider also incorporating appliances that offer technology upgrades to make your home future-friendly. From wireless controls to built-in speakers, today’s high-tech appliances can transform your cooking experience and make everyday kitchen activities seamless.
Kitchen remodels are proven to be one of the most valuable home updates in terms of dollar-for-dollar return on investment. As such, it’s crucial to prioritize any areas for improvement in this space, especially if you’d like to see a sizable increase in your home’s value. Several key areas that
64 DESIGN & BUILD 2021
Upgrading your appliances can make a substantial visual impact on your kitchen remodel. According to Houzz, refrigerators and dishwashers are at the top of the list for home upgrades in 2019, with stainless steel remaining the favorite finish. It’s both clean and durable while still allowing for bolder looks with mixed metal pairings and black stainless options available.
DESIGN & BUILD 2019 93
3. OPTIMIZE YOUR SPACE FOR ACCESSIBILITY
4. GET PROFESSIONAL INSIGHT
Living in the moment is a great mindset for your dinner out or that family road trip, but it’s definitely not the best strategy for a significant remodel. Hinging too much of your budget on current fads sets a short timer on how long your remodel will remain in vogue. Instead, opt for a long-lasting style with upgrades that get better with time.
With most of a renovation’s budget being funneled into obtaining the best materials and appliances, little is usually left over for getting the expertise of a professional. It’s better to reduce the scope of your project to engage professionals first than to penny-pinch for DIY results.
Also, consider elements of your kitchen that could be adjusted to accommodate anyone of any age. Often overlooked changes, like lowering kitchen countertops and widening walkways, can transform your home into a space that continues to welcome you or aging loved ones well into your later years — and can add value as the buying population skews older.
However much money you’re planning to pour into your project, remember: No matter how high the quality of your materials or appliances, if they’re not installed properly, this shortcut could cost you significantly in the long run. Don’t skimp—it’ll save you in the end.

Land Surveying is Essential in Property Development Provided by American Surveyors Land surveying has long been a rich part of our history and an important piece in the development of the United States. America’s greatest presidents and pioneers were some of our nation’s most notable land surveyors. Early land surveyors made a substantial impact on the expansion and development of our nation. Three of the four presidents on Mt. Rushmore were land surveyors before getting into politics. Theirs were often the original footsteps which surveyors for generations afterward have retraced. Today’s land surveyors continue to play an important role in the growth of our nation. The increased value of real estate in recent years has made land planning and development a necessary topic in our area. A land surveyor can protect your investment in your home. It is important to have your land surveyed before building your home. Possible encroachments on your property could be a big issue later on, when remodeling and adding square footage or fencing your yard. You will need to know exactly where your property line is, so you don’t build on your neighbor’s property. A survey will reveal the exact location of your property line.

What to Know When Purchasing LED Bulbs and Fixtures Provided by Teche Electric Supply LED bulbs are available in different kelvin temperatures, the Kelvin temperature can change the look of a room. For the areas in your home that are meant for relaxing and you don’t need the spot light on you (living and bed rooms)you may want a warm or soft white light 2700k to 3000k. When you need to be able to see the difference between your black and blue shoes, sorting laundry, (closets, utility room, work shop and garage) you may want to use cool to bright white 3500k to 4100k. To determine what wattage you need use the LED conversion from incandescent to LED wattage on the bulb
packaging. If your fixture recommends a 60 watt incandescent bulb then you would need a 6-8 watt LED bulb. If you are converting from incandescent to LED and you have a dimmer switch, you will need to convert your current dimmer to a LED dimmer. Incandescent dimmers are meant to dim the higher wattage incandescent bulbs and are not capable to dim the lower wattage LED bulbs. If you have any questions or find yourself needing help, let an Electric Supply & Lighting specialist assists you.

Outdoor Finished Ceilings FINISHES THAT HAVE EVERYONE LOOKING UP
E
ver in search of extra touches that make custom homes stand apart, builders have discovered yet another detail that “everyone must have”: finished ceilings over outdoor living spaces. This popular request can be traced back to the recent years’ growth in the outdoor living segment of homebuilding–a multi-million dollar industry that’s also an indicator of high-end homes. Builders and remodelers alike report high demand for added amenities like porches, verandas, pool houses, outdoor kitchens, pergolas and lanais. Decks and open patios are nice, but homeowners really want a space that connects them to the outside while sheltering them from the weather. Ideally, this space is perfect for entertaining and can be enjoyed all year long. Basically, it’s a second living room. When homeowners put in the extra investment for these structures often filling them with added touches like fireplaces, quality furnishings and light fixtures, it’s only natural to look up at plain vanilla ceilings and wonder, “Is that it?” In response to these homeowner musings, builders have come up with solutions: high-end ceiling materials that truly do make home feel special.

NATURAL WOOD PROS: Natural wood is making a huge comeback in homes across America, and it can be stained or painted to fit any home’s style. There is also a large variety of wood options available, so you can get creative or stick to traditional.
DESIGN & BUILD 2021 71
CONS: Wood can often seem cheaper, but in coastal areas you can make up the difference in long term repairs. Humidity and salt require outdoor wood surfaces to be re-sealed every few years.
WHITE PVC PROS: PVC comes in longer lengths, which translates to fewer seams, but this, and its flexibility also make it tricky to install. PVC requires no staining or maintenance, it can be painted, and it is very durable. CONS: PVC collects dust and soot easily. It also can appear wavy on large ceiling expanses.
FACTORY-LAMINATED WOOD GRAIN PROS: Factory-laminated Wood Grain provides the wow factor with zero maintenance. It looks just like real wood offering the warmth, grain and curb appeal that homeowners desire. It’s also fairly easy to install. CONS: It costs more than white PVC, and there are limited colors available, but getting the look of wood without future maintenance still makes this option a winner. 72 DESIGN & BUILD 2021

Door and Cabinet Hardware Designs Provided by Browne-Stewart Company Door and cabinet hardware are available in a plethora of styles and finishes that can enhance the design in any room. If you are remodeling or building new, choose your hardware last. KNOBS OR PULLS? One preference in the kitchen is to use knobs for all doors and pulls for all drawers. For any large door such as a pantry and any pull-out door, it is more comfortable to use a pull. This is extremely helpful since drawers can get very heavy with all of our pots, pans, dishes, etc. When it comes to doors, your personal tastes should dictate what style and finish you choose, your lifestyle should play a role in determining whether knobs or levers are best for you. Knobs have a traditional appearance, and levers take on a more modern look. Levers are easier to operate than knobs.
COST You get what you pay for! There are a handful of companies with inexpensive brands and their finishes are also sub-par and look cheap. Instead of going to the big-box stores, look for hardware through your local plumbing or hardware showrooms, as they will have a larger variety and salespeople on hand to assist you.
FINISHES While most homeowners will choose chrome or brushed nickel, there are numerous other finishes available to add interests. Finishes that go well with a brushed nickel or brushed stainless faucet: antique pewter, bronze (light to dark), satin brass (this one can get tricky), oil-rubbed bronze, aluminum, black matte, and rust. 16 DESIGN & BUILD 2020

Choosing the Best Hardwood Flooring For Your Home Provided by J&C Wood Products The natural beauty and versatility of hardwood make it an ideal medium for creative artist and installers to craft a multitude of patterns and designs in the flooring. Herringbone and Chevron patterns are always very popular but skilled artisans can inlay almost any pattern that can be dreamed up. Solid hardwood flooring allows for so much variety as well. Stain color options are virtually unlimited while the lighter colors, particularly the greys, are trending now. Longer and wider planks are more popular than the narrow widths that were common in houses built fifty plus years ago. Then there’s the architectural and design aspect of using hardwood flooring. A great example is when someone walks into a multi-family home. A true solid wood floor immediately gives off a higher-end, luxurious look. Compared to the many products that imitate it, hardwood flooring is synonymous with the term “greater resale value.” Also, because wood flooring is typically not specified in certain commercial sectors, such as healthcare or education, there is a sense of exclusivity with every true hardwood flooring commercial project. If you are gluing the flooring to a concrete slab, it is also extremely important to have your flooring glue meet certain high quality standards that will offer solutions that just don’t glue down the floor, but also provide sound dampening, self-leveling, emit no VOC’s, and provide a moisture barrier.
Solid Hardwood vs. Engineered Flooring • Solid wood flooring, as the name suggests, is made of solid wood throughout its thickness. It’s usually made of a hardwood species, such as oak, pine, or hickory, and its major advantage is that it can be sanded and refinished many times over the course of its lifespan. Engineered wood flooring looks very similar on the surface, but it is made from a relatively thin layer of hardwood (usually 3 mm thick real wood veneer bonded over plywood). Engineered flooring is somewhat less expensive than solid hardwood, but most types can be sanded and refinished only once since the surface hardwood layer is relatively thin. • The lifespan of solid hardwood flooring is 30 to 200 years as compared to engineered which is 15 to 30 years making the solid hardwood flooring more durable. • Lengths and widths obviously vary depending on one’s preference but solid hardwood flooring planks will run 12 to 16 feet long as opposed to 5 to 7 feet long for engineered planks. Longer plank runs make a room come alive because it gives the appearance of the tree being laid across the room with one continuous run like with 20 to 40 foot beams on ceilings. 76 DESIGN & BUILD 2021

Wood Look Porcelain Tile vs. Floating Vinyl Floors Provided by Gulf Coast Floors If you want the look of hardwood but not the upkeep, you now have many options to choose from. Tile and vinyl each has its own pros and cons. In a side by side comparison they are both very durable floors. While heavy furniture can cause a dent in vinyl floors, porcelain tiles can crack if installed improperly or if something heavy is dropped on it. They are both waterproof but if flooded, vinyl must be taken up, cleaned, and put back down, whereas tile can just be cleaned. They are both cleaned with a nonabrasive no wax floor cleaner, but grout may require scrubbing or restoration. New to the industry are sealed grouts. They are both pet-friendly and both are offered in many styles, colors, and sizes. Selecting a floor comes down to what works best for the family. 32 DESIGN & BUILD 2020

Clarifying your Expectations KNOWING AND COMMUNICATING YOUR EXPECTATIONS TO YOUR BUILDER IS VERY IMPORTANT
A
s every builder knows, each project comes with its own set of challenges to satisfy client’s wishes and accommodate strict building codes. While there are many steps to designing and building a home, there are key elements to make sure you are getting the excellence you deserve with a reputable builder that will be with you every step of the way. But among those, the most important thing to consider when building, is quality control. Quality control comes in a variety of forms, and embodies many aspects of the building process. It is often not discussed with clients, but should be noted, that regardless of your budget or square footage, the quality of workmanship and supplies should never be compromised.

DESIGN & BUILD 2021 87
In building a custom home, it is beneficial to find a builder that takes a hands-on approach and prioritizes building a relationship with you, to ensure personal attention to your job. Knowing and communicating expectations, advocating on your behalf and maintaining a professional reputation in the community is important to find in a builder. Builders who facilitate relationships with you, likely have a good rapport with review boards and sub-contractors which is imperative to keeping your project without delay and ensuring quality work is being done. Attention to detail is equally important. It means in the office schedules are maintained, options for supplies within your budget are discussed and open communication is valued to ensure any changes or requests along the way are accommodated. It also guarantees multiple eyes are on your job in the field, inspecting and correcting where needed, and project managers are working on your behalf to make sure the correct materials are on site, installation is right and the quality is not compromised in the rush to stay on schedule. The number one rule is inspect, don’t expect. Having an in-house designer that aids in interior and exterior selections is also beneficial to bounce ideas around and make sure all colors and patterns flow seamlessly throughout the house, while giving you alternative options in materials or new technologies. From inside the office, to outside on the job, attention to detail guarantees quality control.
88 DESIGN & BUILD 2021
It is imperative to select a builder that can guide you through every phase of the construction process and for you, the client, to learn the building philosophies of each builder you are interviewing. This ensures the builder’s guidelines align to your expectations before signing an agreement. For example, are the builder’s homes all stick framed or set in place trusses? Do they use spray foam installation or fiber glass batt installation? If they use spray foam, are the exterior walls included, or only the roof deck? Are compaction tests and soil reports important to and reviewed by the builder? These are just a few questions to ask your builder in order to certify that you are getting quality materials and longevity with a well-built home. While there is more to building than meets the eye, every builder’s goal is to exceed clients’ expectations and bring their ideas to life. Building a home should be a fun and exciting process, and is something most people spend years planning. Take the time to do your homework, talk with your builder about your vision and remember, “there is no substitute for quality” so that your home embodies everything you want, while having strong bones to withstand the test of time. Why Invest in a Home Standby Generator? Provided by GenSet Power Solutions Your “home” is a place of comfort and security. A generator provides you with the peace of mind that your home and family are always protected from power outages. Either home or away, generators are set-up to automatically provide your home with power. In the United States, 7 out of 10 homeowners choose a home standby generator for their home. Most generator companies stand by their product by providing a 5-year limited warranty on all standby generators and an optional 24/7 monitoring capability. MOTHER NATURE’S WRATH Over the years, we have all seen the wrath that Mother Nature can bring down upon us. Usually it is not “If” but
“When” she will strike again. Having a home standby generator is an essential piece in helping to “weather the storm.” A home standby generator is a purchase that you hope you never have to use, but that is there ready to run 24/7. CERTIFIED GENERATOR START-UP Placement and safety are key components when installing a home standby generator. You need to be sure that your installer is certified and knows all proper placement and safety restrictions. Certified technicians are not only trained to service your unit but also to complete a proper certified start-up. Don’t let your generator investment be tarnished by an unsafe installation.
Providing you with peace of mind when weathering the storm.

Five Burning Questions About Fireplace Safety By the Home Builders Association of SWLA
F
ireplaces provide a generous amount of warmth and add a special ambiance to your home. Before you relax and enjoy your fireplace during the fall and winter months, here are key answers to common questions about how to safely enjoy this unique home feature.
How do I know if my fireplace needs repairs? Before the first spark is ignited in your fireplace this winter, make sure your chimney is structurally sound. If bricks or joints are chipped or if your chimney is titling, it may be time for some repairs. Visible cracks and holes are other signs that your chimney needs attention.
What is a chimney cap and do I need one? A
Can I keep my holiday décor on or near my fireplace? Experts recommend keeping furniture at least 36 inches away from the fireplace to avoid a spark igniting object in your home. If you have stocking or other holiday decorations hanging from your mantle, it’s best to remove them when your fireplace is in use as a precaution.
How and when do I clean my fireplace after I use it? Once the fire has flamed out, only remove the ashes up to three days after use. Fireplace coals are extremely hot and still have the potential to start a fire. Live coals can remain in the ashes so avoid using a vacuum during clean up. Once you’ve swept up the ashes, store them in a metal container away from wood floors or combustible materials.
gaping hole on the top of your roof can invite trouble. Tree branches, leaves, twigs, birds nest and critters of all types can enter your home or create a blockage. Luckily, there is a simple solution to keep pests and unwanted materials from nestling in your chimney: a chimney cap. This device is strongly recommended because it partially closes the opening of your chimney to prevent harmful debris buildup.
Does my fireplace need to be cleaned? Yes, a chimney sweeper can ensure your fireplace is in the ideal condition to be used and thoroughly inspect your unit for any tar-like build-up known as creosote. A build-up of creosote can catch fire that can spread to the attic and other parts of your home. You may want to ask the chimney sweep for additional advice on cleaning and maintenance for future use. 100 DESIGN & BUILD 2021
