EVENT PROGRAMME 2 – 11 NOVEMBER 2017

EAST MEETS

WEST

Welcome to East Meets West at Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour, a multi-dimensional exhibition that celebrates the influence of Asian culture, art and creativity. Acknowledged and appreciated by international collectors, top designers, architects, art-lovers and style-seekers, Eastern style has caught the imagination of the West for centuries. East Meets West, in association with Asian Art in London, takes visitors on a journey revealing how it still casts an influence today. Creating a new dialogue between tradition and progress; history and the future, work by contemporary Chinese and Japanese artists are juxtaposed with rare antique Asian artefacts. Generating a deeper understanding of design from both cultures is at the heart of the programme, from the Access All Areas showroom events to workshops, masterclasses and discovery tours. For many visitors, this will be their first time to explore Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour. As the world’s premier design destination, it is renowned as an international hub for established makers, innovators and influential luxury brands. With 120 showrooms and over 600 global names, it has long been a catalyst for creative connections. Supporting expression across the design agenda, it presents East Meets West in a truly immersive way.

THE EXHIBITION 2 – 11 NOVEMBER 2017 Mon – Fri 9.30am – 5.30pm Sat 10am – 5pm Sun 10am – 4pm

JAPANESE CONTEMPORARY Ground Floor, North Dome An impressive roster of contemporary Japanese artists, represented by Kamal Bakhshi, offers a dynamic range of works. From colourful murals to abstract woodcuts, block prints and stencils, they reflect the eternal co-existence of traditional techniques and modernity in Eastern creativity. On a more subtle level, they reveal how contemporary Asian design owes much to an understanding of nature and the importance of spirituality. 5

THE EXHIBITION RARE ASIAN ARTEFACTS Ground Floor, Centre Dome Antiques Young Guns, a group of antiques professionals under 40, has been charged to show authentic Asian antiques in an entirely new way. With works from members and supporters, a specially curated space by Eddy Wertheim of the Japanese Gallery encourages visitors to explore how Asian artworks have influenced design tradition in the West. Using a broad sweep of decorative influences – from a calligraphy box and a Samurai armour to exquisite porcelain, paintings and objets d’art – it shows the timeless appeal of the Eastern aesthetic. Design principles based on symmetry, balance and contrast place equal emphasis on the uses of colour, form and materials. For millennia, these elements have been the essence of establishing harmony within the interior. 6
