Louis Poulsen Lighting introduces the LP Icon – a new family of architecturally scaled reflector based outdoor luminaires designed with high performance optics. A variety of mounting options, including post top, cable-mounted and wall-mounted, allow the LP Icon to complement any project. Available as a full cutoff or cutoff classification with a variety of photometric distributions, the LP Icon family fits into the Louis Poulsen Lighting philosophies of light and architecture. The simple shape of the luminaire blends harmoniously with many types of architecture and provides visual interest with a self-illuminating dome option. Created in two scales, the LP Icon Mini and LP Icon Maxi both utilize their reflector design to comply with the strictest of energy and lighting control codes and ordinances, producing responsible lighting by controlling glare and unwanted uplight.

definitions & conventions
When defining the vertical and lateral distribution of the light from a roadway luminaire, the IESNA uses mounting height (MH) as its key unit of measure. 1.0 MH is the vertical distance between the light source and the ground surface. Vertical light is the light striking a vertical surface. IESNA guidelines recognize 3 spacing classifications for both Type III and Type V: short, medium, and long. Short:
Maximum candela point lies between 1.0MH and 2.25MH TRL
Medium: Maximum candela point lies between 2.25MH and 3.75MH TRL Long:

lateral & vertical light distribution reference grid Lateral light distribution refers to the classification type. IESNA guidelines specify that in order to earn a Type III classification, the half maximum isocandela trace must intersect forward of the luminaire, away from the house side and on to the road side, at 1.75MH and not go beyond 2.75MH.

glare Glare is the visual discomfort associated with a luminance source. Glare is caused by several factors, including insufficiently shielded light sources or luminaires that emit excessive light in an observer’s normal line of sight. The IESNA identifies 2 types of glare: disability and discomfort glare.
Disability glare, so called because it can interfere with visual tasks, is caused by a reduction in contrast and results in reduced visual performance.
Discomfort glare is considered more subjective, yet is dependent on the luminance of the luminaire, the observer’s adaptation level, the luminaire position, and size and number of glare sources. Discomfort glare can be reduced by increasing the size of the diffusing area around the light source and by increasing angular displacement of the light source from the line of sight.
All road users, motorists and pedestrians, are familiar with glare from road lighting. For this reason, efficient prevention of discomfort glare has become a key element in the design of good roadway lighting.
