Light technology is the key pivot of Louis Poulsen’s reflector-based road and street lighting programme. A reflector system developed to accommodate ever increasing requirements for efficient and energy-friendly lighting. The reflector flexibility fully subscribes to the Louis Poulsen lighting philosophy: Function, comfort and ambience. The post tops were created on the basis of the Louis Poulsen requirements of simplicity and function. The two post tops, LP Hint and Icon Mini, were both created with focus on a subtle idiom which blends into townscapes unobtrusively and aesthetically. Both post tops were developed for a variety of pole diameters. Over the years, Icon Mini has sold in thousands, in many locations selected as the standard post top for urban areas due to its clean design and easy maintenance.

without compromises A reflector having proven its worth The reflector has proved its usefulness and strength in many new projects. Its flexibility paves the way for a multitude of possible applications, which is why we take great pride in dubbing it multifunctional. The underlying idea of the reflector was to create a fixture that could – due to its optical qualities – be used in the traffic veins of major city centres and as a post lamp in small residential areas. In combination with the light source programme, the reflector fuses flexible use with high lighting comfort.

– the choice decides the
Area/application When choosing a light source for a project, Louis Poulsen suggests that the choice be made in due consideration of the relevant area/application. In urban centres and for navigation purposes, light must have
Daylight
sufficient effect to ensure roads, vehicles and road users adequate visibility. In such contexts, colour rendering is perhaps not a key factor, as the light will mingle with a multitude of other lights from store facades, vehicles, advertisements, etc., while, in other urban areas, such as parks and residential roads, its effect will be more pronounced.
Metal halide
In the same way, wattage requirements also depend on applications, parks not needing as high wattages as, e.g., a trafficked road.
Colour spectrum Generally, Louis Poulsen Lighting recommends light sources that rep-
Compactl fluorescent
resent the entire colour spectrum. The spectral curves shown here clearly prove that the colour properties of the metal halide lamp lies closest to the daylight spectral curve followed by the compact fluorescent lamp, whereas the latter two display more rod-shaped colour spectres and therefore inferior colour rendition.
Mercury
RA-index Louis Poulsen Lighting advises designers to limit the number of different light sources in any one urban area to achieve environmental and architectural serenity in the surroundings. Light source colour rendition is measured in Ra. Several countries have introduced recommended
High pressure sodium
light source colour rendering qualities for urban areas. The Ra-index covers values from 1 to 100, where 100 is the best, corresponding to the colour rendering capabilities of sunlight.
Various lighting needs We have composed our product programme to match the varying requirements posed to urban lighting from parks, paths and squares to major roads.

Flexible light source position guarantees optimal light distribution and light design Designers’ choice of how markedly they want the light distribution to be will determine whether they select clear or frosted light sources. The table below shows the lighting characteristics created by the various types of light sources.

Symmetric
Asymmetric
The lower the position, the more symmetric the outline becomes and vice versa.
Positions 9-10 generate the most asymmetric light distribution, primarily intended for mounting on high posts and placing along the inner side of footpaths. The positions guarantee a softly, yet sufficiently illuminated pedestrian area and a safe light distribution on the road. However, the optimal regularity is typically seen in positions 6-8. Positions 3-5 are the optimal choices for narrow residential roads. If the fixture is to be mounted at a low height, matt glass shading may be appropriate to diffuse the light. The glass shading is available as an accessory. 7

comfort Rotating the reflector In the Icon fixture the reflector can rotate 360 degrees. This allows for improved possibilities for optimised illumination for various road conditions, e.g. turns and curves, thus optimising the lighting design of an area.
Shading back scattered light For use in connection with asymmetrical lighting installed close to residential buildings, the fixture may be ordered with louvres to shade off the back scattered light. This feature eliminates any inconvenience caused by the back- cattered light. The louvres are also available as an accessory, easily mounted without the use of tools.
Light source change Maintenance and light source change constitute an operational cost item that may prove considerable over time. This is why the reflector is manufactured from maintenance free materials, and light sources are changed easily and quickly without the use of tools.

comfort Dark Sky Both post tops were developed in close observance of today’s requirements for shielding towards the night sky, in accordance with the Dark Sky Association IDA requirements, and the increasing demands for efficiency, energy-use and easy maintenance. IESNA have presented new recommendations, taking into account surroundings, human beings and colour rendition while also considering the night sky. The IESNA definitions come very close to Louis Poulsen Lighting’s philosophy for outdoor lighting, reflected in our keywords “function – comfort – ambience”. The reflector was designed to meet the various requirements for protection of the night sky, for instance the Dark Sky Associations (IDA) recommendations for road lighting. At and above the 80° cut-off angle, the lamp emits less than 10% of its maximum effect, whereas light distribution at or above the 90° cut-off angle stays below 2.5% of the maximum effect of Icon Mini Opal and LP Hint Opal w/shade. In the Basic versions, the distribution is 0. Light distribution with this reflector may therefore in post tops with 100% shading above the horizontal plane be characterised as “full cut-off” according to IDA specifications. applications Generally, both products can be used for all lighting purposes in urban areas, but tastes differ, so many cities and towns no longer consider lighting merely a functional measure. Several cities and towns already choose differing fixtures for various districts, thus also applying lighting as a differentiating factor to lend individual urban districts each their own characteristics and style.

In addition to the inherent aesthetic advantages, tests have also shown that people’s ability to find their way in traffic increases proportionally with improved colour rendering capabilities of lighting. Colours and thus also objects become easier to distinguish the better the colour rendering qualities are – not surprisingly.

transport public spaces The matrix at the bottom of page 10 shows Louis Poulsen’s recommendations for use of light sources related to key urban applications. The matrix figures refer to the recommended light source position of the various light sources for the mentioned applications. As the matrix also indicates, the reflector offers wide flexibility in relation to the optimal lighting atmosphere. Colour rendering qualities can be supplemented with special light layout in the various applications. Thus, when Louis Poulsen claims to consider people in our lighting concepts, this can serve as an example to prove how the light in an area can be optimised with due consideration of the environment and energy use. The safety element is another key factor in lighting selection. A key aspect is to avoid unintended shadowed areas, to ensure that people are evenly illuminated and to completely prevent any inappropriate glare.

LP Hint
– simplicity and flexibility In its design, LP Hint is the essence of simplicity. But simplicity hides perfection as every single aspect of the fixture head was designed in detail. The designer found inspiration for the shape and design in glasses and clothing. Pleats and folds from dresses combined with light refraction in glass are all ingredients, which young Swedish industrial designer Helena Tatjana Eliason integrated into the LP Hint post top. A touch of multiple, small everyday observations. The LP Hint post top is a complete, compact light machine. Behind the simple exterior, it stores pole connection, ballast, reflector and adjustment facilities. LP Hint was designed to accommodate easy, fast maintenance, so Louis Poulsen Lighting carries over the LP Icon Mini concept – tool-free light source replacement.
LP Hint is available in two basic versions, one with a completely closed surface and one with an opal top shade, which helps to illuminate the actual fixture while also functioning as directional pointer in, for instance, hilly areas. The shading may either be placed inside the fixture or be lowered so that the fixture points an illuminated edge downwards. This edge helps indicating directions and also lends decorative effect to places where illumination should be more than merely a discrete aspect of the surroundings, such as pedestrian streets and paths in urban environments. In its shape, LP Hint appears as a shortened cone, but due to its almost vertical sides, the perception angle impacts greatly on its appearance. Its simple design makes LP Hint easy to fit into contemporary architecture. Viewed from the side, the post top appears rectangular, but changes to a more rounded shape seen from other angles.

Icon Mini
– a robust solution
Icon Mini has been chosen as the lighting solution in many towns and urban areas, and its lighting qualities and easy maintenance are some of the key reasons most often mentioned. LP Icon Mini was marketed under the description “robust efficiency”. The description primarily hinted at its robust, simple design combined with high efficiency. Since then, LP Icon Mini has proven its unsurpassed qualities. In LP Icon Mini, designer Mads Odgaard created a classic street lamp. With its muted glow, Icon Mini’s hemispherical, illuminated surface becomes a directional post top in streets and roads. The discreetly illuminated hemisphere was the basic concept for LP Icon Mini. However, some applications as well as aesthetic and political decisions required a fixture head with complete upward shading. This is why LP Icon Mini is also marketed with a post top, the LP Icon Mini Basic, consisting of a completely shaded light grey acrylic diffuser that is wholly shielded upwards. LP Icon Mini Opal comes with a fixed serigraphed protective glass, which reflects the light onto the diffuser while also diffusing the edge light. A hemisphere with a cylinder mounted on the top – that is how simple it is. LP Icon Mini can be mounted on various poles with either a curved or a straight arm, as the specification pages show. The choice impacts greatly on the final appearance of the post top, thus becoming a feature that helps adapt the post top to several types of architecture. In recent years, LP Icon Mini has come to characterise street lighting in several countries in both Europe and USA, the primary reasons being its simple design, its wide adaptability and the unique reflector light technology, rendering it ideal for a wide range of applications.
