inky thoughts... Designed To Color has been a year in the making. It all started with 3 of my friends who love to color as much as I do just talking and laughing like we always do when we get together. Then, the idea was planted and it started to grow. As I started to talk to other crafters about the idea, I always got the same response which was almost always this is something that has been lacking in magazines that we all love to flip through. It is my dream to see this idea continue to flourish thorugh the online magzine, our blog and eventually it is my ultimate goal to see this in paper form across the country! In this first issue, you will find amazingly talented crafters who I’ve gotten to know over the past couple years as I have formed relationships with many through DTs and blog hops. So many were excitedly
willing to send me samples even on a tight deadline! I owe them all a HUGE thanks for helping me out and giving me words of encouragement along the way. You will also find a section on The Greeting Farm which is where it all started for me. I distinctly remember the blog hop where I first saw an Anya stamp and I never looked back. I’m blessed to call Marie my friend & have her join in the premiere issues as our first spotlight Hues Who! And last, but defintately not least, I have to thank my husband, my #1 supporter in all this. He has given me the resources to go after my dream and has held my hand to gently pull me forward when I would get stuck with doubt. I hope you enjoy this debut issue and hope we have many, many more to share in the future!!!

Coloring is a blast, no matter how ‘colorful’ or plain it may be. Lately we have noticed more and more basic black and white images. This doesn’t mean an image stamped or printed with black ink on white paper. Oh no! This is using our pens, markers, inks, whatever we can find to color the image as though we are looking at it thru a tube TV from the 50’s! Without of course all the grainy white dots. It’s a fantastic way of adding a simple, vintage flair to your creations. If you have seen any card or project made with a black and white image you have noticed how bright and vibrant everything else looks. This color technique is a great way to display the paper or other elements of your creation. All too often our images are on center stage, loving the limelight. And with a black and white image it’s a great way to pull everything else about the project to the forefront. And as a bonus, they are super fun to color. With just a few basic shades of black and grey, you can create your very own vintage-like image without all of the hassle of trying to match colors perfectly with the paper and elements you wish to work with. We at Design To Color love color, we embrace it, we want to roll around and paint a rainbow on every blank wall we see with it! But sometimes our coloring skills should be put to another purpose. For the greater good of all colorful papers and elements out there, we encourage you to have a go at coloring a black and white image. It’s sure to fit into everyone’s own personal style and add a little more pizazz to each project it’s used with. 10

Even though I’ve done videos using each of the grey families to achieve the color black, I was still getting questions about how they compare to each other. So I thought it would be helpful to create a side by side chart, by coloring The Greeting Farm’s Creeper Madden’s hair in all four grey color families. I think you can really get a sense of the different qualities of each one.
As you can see the Cool Greys have a much more metallic and shiny finish compared to the Warm Greys on the opposite end, which almost look brown.

1. Tell our readers about yourself & background. Hi everyone! My name is Marie and my husband and I run the Greeting Farm, a little stamp company located in Colorado, along with our awesome creative coordinator, Jessica who is in Tennessee. I’m originally from Long Beach, CA where I went to school for graphic design and multimedia. I like pretty things, art books, dolls, paper, pretty fabric, and boxes. Worked in the clothing industry making designs for kids and junior, lots of crafty ventures on Etsy, crochet, knitting, polymer jewelry, art cards, buttons, baby clothes…. I like creating and designing new things all the time. I get bored easily and so luckily there is always new things to learn creatively! 2. Have you always been an artist? I’ve never really considered myself an ‘artist’ really. I grew up liking art-type stuff and my father painted a bit which was a great inspiration to me. I mainly dabbled with stick figures that had triangle dresses and swirled hair. I think I have a certain criteria in my own head of what an artist should be like and I don’t fall into that category by my own standards. I like to be referred to as maybe more of a ‘designer’? I feel more comfortable with that. :) 3. How do you come up with new ideas for new stamps? I have a sketchbook that I doodle from time to time. Sometimes it makes sense and sometimes it doesn’t. Most time it’s just a spur of the moment. Something that stirs interest that day or maybe it’s something that I saw someone wearing. Maybe a hat or a necklace and then it grows from there. It comes from the oddest places. 4. Do you make cards and / or paper craft a well? I never started making cards until I started designing stamps. Sounds totally backwards doesn’t it? These days I try to make what cards I can in the little time that I have. Like most, I wish there were more hours in the day. 5. What is your favorite part about stamping? The coloring of course!!! Bringing life to a piece of line art is awesome. 6. What medium to you prefer for coloring? Usually copic markers but I’m trying to try other things like watercolor and media crayons. 7. Where do you find inspiration? I like looking through magazines and art books. Layouts, ads, and paper. Anything can be 18inspirational depending on the moment.
8. Describe your craft room. Oh if only. I don’t have an official craft room, whatever spot is uncluttered at the moment my craft area when I do have time to make cards. Most times it’s the dining table.

9. Do you like to color with music or without? No preference. 10. How did you come up with the name The Greeting Farm? The Greeting Farm was decided upon after our original name was unavailable. We like the The Greeting Farm because it represented a place where ideas were always being created and cultivated for card making. 11. What has been your favorite part of starting your own business so far? And the most challenging? The best part of it of course is controlling your schedule and no boss to answer to! The hardest is everything you do affects your company. And sometimes there are 14 hour days. 12. Give our readers a sneak peek of what we can expect in the coming months for The Greeting Farm! This year the Greeting Farm has decided to have a release every other month instead of every month, giving us more time to focus on new and totally awesome designs. There will be new faces, new clears, and customer requests being filled.
