Would you like to see your favorite companies featured in our Hue’s Who section? Please send us an email at info@designedtocolor.com with your suggestions! What exactly is our Hue’s Who feature? In a nutshell, we love to feature companies in the craft industry that are favorites or up and coming stars to get a little bit of insight behind the company with our interview as well as spotlight their products with our Color Crew. A lot of times, these companies will offer up a great discount for our readers or sometimes even a freebie for subscribers! The companies below have all been featured in past issues as our Hue’s Who. We love them and have seen an increase in submissions featuring their products after they’ve been in our magazine. It’s great to see our readers loving them as much as we do! We just want to thank each one for their support of our magazine as we approach our 1 year anniversary. Thank you for helping us make our debut such a success. It’s with your support and encouragement that we continue to grow!!

“Ahhhh”...I love seeing another issue come together and this one has been very special as we have brought on board our new photographer extraordinaire, Lori Boyd! She amazes me with her family, faith and incredible creativity. It was just a natural “yes” when she approached me to offer her help with the photography. She has been with ©Saturated Canary Designed To Color since it was just a tiny idea in my mind with no name. I am absolutely over the moon with the cover and every single photo in between the pages of our Oct/Nov issue! We also have two new features in this issue that we are going to keep around as regulars. One, which is my favorite, is our Coloring Tutorial. Each issue we will have 1 or 2 tutorials with photos and instructions for our readers to color along with. While each tutorial may feature a specific medium, you can still follow along while using similar colors that you have in your color collection. We are thrilled to kick this off with Jennie Lin Black from Spectrum Noir and you may have noticed you each received a sample from Crafter’s Companion. You can use this to follow along with either of the tutorials or do your own thing! We partnered with Crafter’s Companion to give you a sample of their specialty coloring paper to try out - and be sure to see the exclusive offer on this page as well! I hope you enjoy it. :D Another new feature you will see is the Editor’s Choice! 1 or 2 cards will be chosen to feature here that really catch my eye. If you see your card featured in the Editor’s Choice, you will receive a prize package from us as a special thank you for submitting and being a fan of our magazine. We’ll have a different prize pack each issue, but will mail it to you with your complimentary issue! Without you, this magazine would not be as colorful and it is just our way of saying thanks!

I

am really excited about this new feature, I couldn’t stop at 2 cards so I chose 3. The ICU card by Stephanie just makes me giggle every time I see it! I love how she kept her layers neat & even but added some flair with her offset sentiment panel. Best Witches by Wendy just BLEW me away with that gorgeous pink hair. Everyone knows my own personal obsession with extreme hair color so I love fun colored stamps - not to mention, this stamp just reminds me of Rainbow Brite! The elegant ballerina card by Dana is so soft and subtle with her watercoloring. I love how she kept her image the focal point with just a cluster of flower embellishments in the corner. All 3 of these ladies will receive a special prize pack from Designed To Color along with their complimentary issue!

DESIGNER TIP: I use a basic watercolor set that you can get at any craft store since copic markers are out of my price range. Any one can use watercolors, stamp image twice and practice on one. Start with a little color and lots of water and layer on the color (less water) to get your shading.

Hi there! Leah here, and I’m excited to tell you about these new colored pencils from Tombow that were generously sent to me for testing and review. Thank you, Tombow! And thank you, Carisa, for allowing me the opportunity to play and check out a brand new product! I was completely psyched, and a little nervous, when I received the Irojiten Dull Tone set, volume 9, which contains 10 pencils of varied rich autumnal hues. This set has a nice mixture of browns, blues and greens, and while I’m used to playing with Prismacolor Pencils, I was pleasantly surprised when I set to work on my squirrel from Some Odd Girl. Before I get into the meat and potatoes of my mini-review, I have to make a confession: when I color, I press HARD, and I’m used to a soft, waxy texture. I don’t use mineral spirits or blending pencils, but rather the lightest shade of the family with which I’m working (or white). With the Irojiten pencils, I need to modify my technique a bit, because they are much dryer and firmer, which makes them perfect for layering lots of light, blended color. I will definitely be busting out my Gamsol and blending stumps with these, because I have a feeling they’ll blend like BUTTAH! I was going to hold off on sharing my project until I’d tried several different techniques and allowed myself to become more comfortable using the Irojiten pencils, but I thought it might be fun to show you the “first draft”, so that I can share other projects and you’ll be able to see my (anticipated) progress in future issues of Designed to Color. With my heavy hand, I am not totally pleased with the way my first attempt turned out, but I love the richness of the colors and I think the blues in this set are perfect for shadows and depth. Jay Blue may possibly be one of my favorite pencil colors EVER! I plan to pick up a few more of the Irojiten sets to see how the paler colors work, and how they blend when I soften the pressure; I think these pencils have loads of potential, and I’m anxious to get to know them better! We’ll do some comparisons down the road, but in the meantime, I give you... IROJITEN, take one! 6

Lizzie Oakley www.ohsnaplizzie.com Some might not know this, but I remember Some Odd Girls Kristy way back from Cafemom. Remember that fun site? So it might have caused more drama then any of us needed, it was still amazing to see Kristy become The Odd girl. I feel as though I have watched her grow up. The first SOGGY I purchased was Angel Kaylee. I still use her monthly and she is my go to stamp. I love everything about Some Odd Girl and the evil genius Kristy. The quirky and simple looks of the images are just the bee’s knees! They are great for all fans of coloring. The big eyes and fun styles are just a crafters dream! So take this as my recommendation to buy all things Some Odd Girl! Now that the company has branched out into clear stamps, I see nothing but amazing things from The Odd girl. Move over Tim Holtz, Kristy and all her Oddies are coming through!

REEVES WATERCOLORS SUPPLY LIST Cardstock: Bazzil, LCI Paper: Studio Calico Stamp: Indian Tia (Some Odd Girl) Ink: Printer Embellishments: October Afternoon, The Twinery, Studio Calico, Prima Other: Whimsey Box, Washi Tape, Sequins

Hi! I'm Leah, I'm orange, and I totally love Some Odd Girl to the extreme. I have been playing with these fabulous images since they first made it to digital format, and I fell in love with the crisp, clean lines and quirky, unique characters. Kristy is an amazing artist (and one of my very best friends, so I may be a smidge biased!), and she always keeps her designs fresh and fun. I tend to gasp aloud when I get the sneak peeks, and I've been doing this for years! Some Odd Girl stamps cater to just about everybody... If you love to color people, there are 6 main characters with loads of themes and accessory stamps for each. If you're more into critters, you'll find some of the most adorable and squishable animals, monsters, and more! If you like a richer, classier style, then you'll love the elegance of the Nouveau Girls line (lots of pleats and fine details if you're not intimidated by that kind of thing!). And if you're a big font geek like me, you'll love that each clear stamp set comes with its own sentiments incorporating different font styles and sizes. Digital or clear, they are reasonably priced, of excellent quality, and absolutely full of personality! I'm an Odd Girl for life, and I'm thrilled that we are featuring Kristy and Some Odd Girl as our Hue's Who in this issue!

PAINT! Adding paint splatters to your project is a great way to make it original. There are many forms of paint splattering, from using a mist and flicking it around or dipping your paint brush into a lovely hue and letting the paint fly. It adds a nice depth and texture to any creation. From cards to scrapbook layouts and the ever awesome altered items, a splatter of paint can make your clean and simple style pop with the gritty edge of funky or shabby chic. So go on and give it a fling! I’m sure you will have a colorful time.

DESIGNER TIP: I swiped different colored Distress Ink pads over the top of Canson Watercolor Paper and then used a damp paper towel to spread the ink. I added random drops of Adirondack Ink. Then I dipped a wet paintbrush into more Adirondack Ink and flicked the paint bristles over the paper to make splatters. After the paper was dry, I sponged black ink over the TCW Art Is 6x6 plastic template. Then I used the tip of a sharpened pencil dipped in the various colors of acrylic paint to add random small dots on the background paper.

Coloring Tutorials

by Jennie Lin Black www.jenniebstampin.blogspot.com

We are excited to feature two coloring tutorials by Jennie Lin Black, Alcohol Marker Specialist and Coloring Instructor. She is one of two Spectrum Noir alcohol specialists and lead educators for Crafter’s Companion. I had the pleasure of meeting her at Summer CHA 2012 and we instantly hit it off. She loved the magazine and I LOVED the markers! I have to say once I started using them I was really impressed by the blending and contrast you can achieve. One of my favorite parts of the system is the way they are sold in packs of 6 by color family. This really takes the guess work out of trying to decide what colors to get. Just purchase the color family you desire to receive a variety of shades to achieve awesome blending right out of the package!

Blending is done with the lighter color marker or a medium color that is in between the two colors joining. Dab or make tiny circles on the joint where the two colors meet. Do not color over all of the dark area with any light marker or it will dilute too much of the dark ink. A blender pen is actually used more as a correcting pen.

STEP 1:

STEP 2:

Face, hands - TN1

Face, hands - Add TN4

Dress, boots - TN1, add shading with TN7

Dress, boots - Bend together with TN4

Hair - IG7 Corn - CT4, shade with a bit of OR1 Eyes - TN7 (just a thin line of brown) Feather - TN2 Basket - GB1, add shading wtih GB7

Hair - Add IG9 on top of IG7 leaving bits of lighter color and white showing. Do not blend. Corn - Blend CT and OR1 with GB5 Feather - TN7 and softly blend with TN2

STEP 3: Face, hands - Blend TN4 into TN1 with TN2. Add DR3 or CR11 for lips and paint. Dress, boots - Blend TN4 into TN1 with TN2. Accent with TN7 or darker Hair - Add second layer of IG9 in deepest areas for extra shading. Basket - Add accents with TN7

Basket - Blend with GB2 or GB1

EDITOR’S NOTE: While the coloring tutorials featured in this issue are done with Spectrum Noir markers and you see their marker numbers listed here, a lot of the same basic techniques and application apply no matter what marker system you are using. So, if you are using Copics or another alcohol based marker, just grab some similar colors to follow along, coloring and blending like the steps pictured above to achieve simliarly colored results.
