Trending Mark Rolled Paper Flowers

By Lizzie Oakley www.ohsnaplizzie.blogspot.com

There is just something so fulfilling about making your own embellishment for a project. A plus, is when it’s very fun to make! Rolled flowers are an insanely popular way to do just that. You can use pretty much any type of paper, fabric, felt, ribbon, well anything that you can fold and bend really to make these. Sure, you can spend lots of money on those amazing premade flowers. Some companies actually make very amazing 3 dimensional flowers that add an amazing wow factor to any project. But what happens when you are crafting and you don’t have that special flower on hand. Unless you are a very lucky person, who happens to own your own craft store or you know of one that is open 24 hours, then chances are it will be very hard to get your inky little hands on said amazing blossoms at 2am. This is where the knowledge of making your own rolled flowers comes in handy!

Pattern Paper Hand Cut

Pattern Paper with Die

Whether you are using a die for a die cut machine or cutting your own, the basics to this technique are very simple. You find the outside of your blossom and then start rolling. You can roll tight or loosely, it’s up to you and your style. As an added bonus, whenever you make your rolled flowers, you are making them to match your project! So what if you can’t find snoze berry purple flowers at your local craft store, you can sure make some with that snoze berry purple paper that you just painted up! It’s such a fantastic feeling to have the freedom to create flowers when you need them. Not to mention all the money you will be saving, which could be put to good use on something else crafty. Like new markers or paints!

Rolled Flower Tutorial Using Circles Step 1: Cut or punch out a circle. The bigger the circle, the wider the flower is. It is recommended that you use a double sided paper. Book pages work amazing for this as well, as you can paint or spritz them to the color of your choosing. With your circle, cut a spiral starting from the outside working your way in. You want to start off cutting the spiral thin, and then making it thicker as you go inward.

*tutorial time!

Rolled Flowers Tutorial Using a Border Punch Step 1: Using your boarder punch, punch out a 6 inch strip of paper. It is recommended to use a doubled A special trick is to play around with your cutting, use sided paper for this. Now, trim your strip to about 1 a wavy motion or a zig zag. You can even dust off those CM from where the punches end. It is important to deco scissors! trim as much as possible ask the punched out part of the paper will be the petals. If you have too much paper under the punches, this is not going to work well.

Step 2: Start rolling! As mention before, the outside of the spiral should be a little bit thinner than the inside. This is the center of your flower. It’s always a good idea to roll up everything tightly first, just to get Step 2: Start rolling! This is really easy, just start roll the paper to be a little more on the malleable side. tightly and then loosen as you go along. Roll all the Then you can un-roll, and go back and make the inner way to the end. part of the spiral more loose, as this will turn into your outer petals.

Step 3: You will be left with a little ‘nub’ of paper from the center of your spiral, take some adhesive and apply it to your ‘nub’. Now fold it under your flower and adhere. Ta Da! You are done!

Step 3: You will be left with a funky cylinder shape. That’s totally normal. Now is the fun part! Start to mold your blossom. Take your hand or another hard, flat object (like a book or ink pad) and flatten your flower. Mold some more. Take the tail end of your Hint: If you think your flowers are too much on the dimensional side, an easy fix is to take your hand or another flat object, and flower, adhere it to the bottom. There you go! A fun flatten them. Apply just enough pressure until the blossoms start and funky rolled flower using a border punch! to give and flatten out.

Hues Who! ...cont

I have to say this is my favorite part of this magazine - well besides all the gorgeous coloring throught the pages becuase you know I love to color! The reason I love this feature, is that I get the honor of interviewing some of the most admired artists and manufactures in the industry. That’s so much fun! This month we’re featuring Krista Smith of Saturated Canary. I first became aquainted with her art through her Simply Sassy line available at Sugar Nellie (www.funkykits.co.uk). I started seeing these beautiful wide eyed funky girls and HAD to HAVE them!!! I even was so lucky to be a guest designer early last year. When Krista left the most amazing comment on one of my cards using her image, I was smitten. She is absolutely the sweetest and most adorable person I’ve ever met (well, we haven’t met face to face, but you know what I mean!) She always has a kind word and writes the most thought provoking and insightful posts on her blog. I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels like Krista is a friend from afar with all the glimpses into her life she allows. She’s just..... authentic. Last year, she took a leap of faith and turned her art into digital stamps which you can find at Saturated Canary Digital Stamps currently on etsy (www. etsy.com/shop/SaturatedCanaryDigis). I am SO glad she did because they are the most fun to color as I realized I wasn’t the only one loving her stamps with the influx of submissions we had for the Saturated Canary category of our call!! It’s always fun to read through the answers when they come back as I discovered many new tidbits, like my favorite that her dream place to live is Sarasota, Florida which is where I GREW UP!!! Small world, huh? I hope you enjoy getting to know Krista Smith a bit more as much as I did! http://saturatedcanary.blogspot.com/ http://www.etsy.com/shop/SaturatedCanaryDigis

Krista: When I was in high school, I would make posters for my sports team’s final games...draw up all of us girls...and put them up in the locker room. I think my mom still has all of them:). And if I pulled them out, you would see my characters haven’t really changed-just become more refined. I don’t think about drawing “my style”...it is the only way I’ve ever drawn people. I would have a hard time drawing any other way now. I’ve always loved big eyes, puffy lips, big boots, and lots of pretty layers.

DTC: Early bird or night owl? Krista: Night owl. Oh boy. I am a grumpy girl in the morning!:)

Praying that I see that peek someday!! • Take the kiddos to Disney with Phil’s family. (Will cross that off this September!:) • I hope that God gives me the opportunities to truly touch others lives for Him.

Krista: I made invitations before I jumped into stamping. I would only make cards if I forgot to pick one up at the store for someone:), but mostly it was handmade invites. I sold quite a few sets on Etsy before I ever knew of this fabulous stamping/ card-making world. When I began to design rubber stamps for Sugar Nellie, I found all these (you guys!) awesome blogs filled with beautiful cards and crafts and scrapbook pages...and I was so excited and inspired! And I quickly realized that I had a long way to go before I could ever sell another invitation! LOL... I’m working on my style, though. It’s improving little by little. And please do not go search through my past sales. I’ll be embarrassed;) LOL!

DTC: What is your favorite embellishment to use? Krista: Kellie Winnell introduced me to yo-yo’s and flat back buttons. I cannot get enough! She sent me her beautiful hand made ones and now they are popping up everywhere on everything I make! DTC: If you could be a character from any book, who would it be? Krista: The Wicked Witch of the West. Hands down. I would love to be green for one day. DTC: What is the last book you read?

Kraft with Copics!

By Lisa McKinney http://lisabeesponderings.blogspot.com

I’m Jo pa ou on ca

When it comes to coloring with Copics, the paper you use plays a HUGE part in what your result is going to be. Every Copic user has their paper of choice; mine is Stamper’s Select White by Papertrey Ink…but my FIRST love is Kraft. Kraft is an earthy fibrous brown paper of variable weights. You can buy it in many forms from the rolled up brown paper you can use for wrapping gifts to a package of Kraft notecards. If you are on a budget, you can use even use a brown paper grocery bag! Paper companies have recognized the demand for Kraft paper and have added it to their cardstock lines. The main difference in Kraft is the weight and shade but it all can be used for Copic coloring. I prefer to use the Kraft by Papertrey Ink and Stampin Up. The #1 reason I like to color on Kraft is

25

that it softens all of your colors, making it a lot easier to blend them together. This is very good if you (like me) have holes in your color families. Another benefit is that you can use your coloring pencils for accents on top of the Copic coloring or for intense light shades. Before you color on Kraft paper, I recommend you get a scrap of paper and use it to lay out your colors because if you don’t you might be shocked at what you get! They will be 100% different from coloring on white! Another thing to keep in mind is that it takes longer to see the final result; especially coloring with the pale numbers ending in 0000 thru 10.

Th tr on Be th If ch in co

You can see how the colors are blending differently and how the intensity of the Y35/38 is muted on the Kraft. I used the W’s for my mouse and the Kraft makes them a lot darker and even warmer! Compared to the Kraft, the W’s on the White look more like C’s! I don’t

To give you an example of how Kraft affects your coloring, I’m going to show you an image colored on Kraft cardstock and then the same image colored on white cardstock. I will use the same colors for each image.

I’m using cute little Mouse Under Party Hat by Whiff of Joy and am coordinating him to a piece of polka dot paper from my Echo Park pad “Summer Days”. I pulled out all the colors I am going to use and colored them on a scrap of white and then a scrap of Kraft so you can see the difference.

Now that the image is done you can see how different these colors ended up laying down!If you want to give your Copics a new life, try them on Kraft paper for your next project!

even bother coloring “white” on Kraft with makers. I just grab my white colored pencil and use it liberally! The same is true for my shadows. The best colors for shadows on Kraft are NOT the ones ending in more than one zero (like BV0000, E000, B00, etc). They are just too light. It’s best to go with the ones that end with 1, 2 or 3. There is enough lightness that it will still shadow, but enough of the color that it will show up. Another option is to use light colored pencils. I used Grey for the Kraft image. I have found that if you use colored pencils, you can soften the lines by rubbing your finger it.

The colors are very bright on the white, but nearly translucent on the Kraft. This allows you to get an idea on how heavy you will have to lay your colors down. Because I want the hat to stand out, I’m going to use the yellow that stands out the most--Y35 and Y38. If I was just coloring on the white, I would not have chosen these colors because they are too orange and intense; therefore, I would have gone with the Y21/23 combination.

Products Used: Stamps: Mouse Under Party Hat (Whiff of Joy) Ink: Tuxedo Black (Memento) Copics: Y35, Y38, W00, W1, W3, W5, C00, N1, RV11 Watercolor Pencils: White (Sargent Art) and Grey 230 (Faber-Castell) Paper: Kraft and Stampers Select White (Papertrey Ink); Summer Dreams pad (Echo Park) Paper companies carrying Kraft Paper: Stampin Up—Crumb Cake (formerly Kraft) Papertrey Ink—Kraft Bazzill—Kraft There may be others, but I’ve just listed the 3 that I know for sure…

SKETCH

by w

In each issue, we’ll bring you a sketch to use in your card making. For me, sketches are a great jumping off point when I’m feeling like my mojo is nowhere to be found or I’m just feeling in a funk. It’s also a great place to start if you are just beginning to color and make cards! In my early days of my hobby, I almost always searched out and used a sketch when making a card. Now, I’m feeling a bit more confident or a little more strapped for time, so I don’t always look for a sketch and tend to put a card together without it. Our sketches are designed by the incredibly talented Lizzie Oakely - I hope you will love the cards submitted in this section as much as we do. Also, be sure to check out our blog because we will also be having a challenge soon using this sketch!

winter cha ‘12

This past January, with the release of Designed To Color’s debut issue, I packed it up and headed to CHA - Craft & Hobby Association. It was amazing! I was nervous and excited as I flew to California for the first time. You know you’re in for a good time when you get on the shuttle bus at 11pm with half of the other people riding with you also heading to CHA the next day. My first day there, I ran into Kristy Dalman of Some Odd Girl (www.someoddgirl.com), that was a riot because I seriously did not recognize her - I had arrived past midnight at my hotel the night before and had a hard time sleeping in a strange city so I wasn’t quite awake, but thankfully she forgave me later and we spent nearly the whole day together with her and her DT girls Leah & Melissa. Some of my highlights from the show include hanging out with Jessica Diedrich - many of you know her from The Greeting Farm (www. thegreetingfarm.com) - every day!!! Breakfasts just weren’t the same without her smiling face when I got home! Meeting Tracy Weinzapfel, Erika Taylor and the rest of my fellow Helmar Hotties! (www. helmar.com.au) Meeting Angela Magnuson from Unity Stamp Co. (www.unitystampco.com) Meeting and hugging Mark Montano (www.markmontano. com) for Lizzie!! She has a major crush on him and that was SO MUCH FUN to meet him and get his book which totally ROCKS by the way. Big Ass Book of Crafts 2 is SOOO inspiring and he’s a sweetheart, too, because he read the premiere issue and gave major kudos!! Some of my product highlights, seeing Marianne Walker (www. ilikemarkers.blogspot. com) from Copic. I took her beginner class almost 2 years ago now and was so happy to be able to chat with her again - and beg her to come back to Colorado for the intermediate class, I’m not gonna lie. Some of the cool new products, American Crafts (www.americancrafts.com) is coming out

35

with a new line of alcohol based markers called Chromatics that are budget friendly! I got to test them out and they are FABULOUS! Just right for anyone just starting out. They have loads of colors already with new colors being made as well. There is a brand new marker called Mepxy (www. mepxyart.com) on the scene there that I also got to try that were phenomenal! I’m really looking forward to all these new coloring mediums being put out in the craft industry! It just makes me giddy. Another fabulous medium is from Tombow (www. tombowusa.com), colored pencils called Irojiten that blend beautifully and come in some pretty cool packing - looks like books from the outside but pretty pencils when you open it up! My other love in crafting is pretty paper! A new company called Trinity Paper Arts (www. trinitypaperarts.com) was also new on the scene and they have some GREAT ideas and designs. I got to sit down with the owners and I’m excited to see how their company grows in the industry. I actually met several fledgling companies that inspired me in so many ways- it was pretty incredible to be able to meet people with dreams of their own that are going for it! I am already planning my trip to Summer CHA in Chicago - to meet up with now old friends and hopefully some new ones! Find out the latest and greatest in products and report back to you again. That was the best part of the entire show and experience. Knowing that by my being there, I was able to take along each and every one of you! So with that, I want to leave you with some pics. I have to admit, I wasn’t the best at whipping out my camera, next time I will get better at taking pictures.
