I am not a politician, but your 'servant': PM Modi SINDKHEDA: Addressing the first of three scheduled rallies in Maharashtra, Prime Minister Narendra Modi described himself as a servant of the people of India and not a politician. "Politicians have the habit of making promises during campaigns and then forgetting them. But I am not a politician, but your sevak (servant). That is why I have come back to remind you of the promises I had made to you earlier. I will give a detailed tab of my work," Prime Minister Modi said. Launching a scathing attack on the Congress Party, he said, "We never make promises to win elections. We make promises to transform the lives of tribal communities. We don't make false promises like the Congress." Talking of Maharashtra, he said, "Is
there anyone born who can divide Chhatrapati Shivaji's Maharashtra? Without Mumbai there is no Maharashtra, without Maharashtra there is no India." Taking another dig at the Congress Party, he said, "Election fever is making people who are on the verge of defeat to speak lies. Such politics went on for 60 years. Corruption happened in irrigation sector; you were supposed to get water but did not. But their bank accounts got filled." Assuring the crowd that he himself is one of them, Prime Minister Modi said, "I don't need to take pictures with poor people. I have grown up with them. I come from amidst you and that is why my government wants to work for poor people." Giving accounts of farmers who committed suicide, Prime Minister Modi said, "From last ten years, around 3700 farmers have been committing suicide every year in Maharashtra alone."
Tendulkar joins PM Narendra Modi 'Swachh Bharat' campaign MUMBAI: Cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar and his team of friends and supporters have joined Prime Minister Narendra's 'Swachh Bharat' campaign. Tendulkar was one of the nine celebrities nominated by Prime Minister Modi to spread awareness on cleanliness, when he kicked off his ambitious campaign on October 2, the 145th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. "I have been entrusted the leadership role of 'Swachh Bharat' campaign by Shri Narendra Modi. So, I am here along with my team and will clean this area," Sachin said, while taking part in cleaning up the road with some youngsters. "When all of us, including my friends got the information that I have received the leadership role, all my friends came together and said we will also lend our hand towards cleanliness and will try and keep India as clean as possible," said Sachin, who is also a Rajya Sabha member. Sachin, who retired from international cricket last year, said, "This is the start and we can move forward from here by doing better work.
With India interested, Japan's bullet train export venture faces hurdles TOKYO: Japan's rail industry is hopeful its longterm dream of exporting bullet train technology will finally come true in India. The one hurdle now is convincing East Japan Railway, or JR East, to join the venture and ensure its success. Industry optimism rose after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's official visit to Japan in September. While here, Modi mentioned the bullet train during a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. A high-speed rail project connecting Mumbai with Ahmedabad is in Japan's sights. The contract for the roughly 500km link between India's largest city and the growing industrial hub is expected to be awarded through a bidding process starting in 2017 or later. Japan is conducting feasibility studies for the project with India. A report on the study is expected by next July.
Japanese are optimistic about winning the contract because they have provided assistance for Indian railway infrastructure development. Subways in five cities, including Kolkata and Bangalore, and the project for a 1,500km freight railway link between Delhi and Mumbai have benefited from yen loans from the Japanese government. "We have built a very good relationship with India's Ministry of Railways," an official at the Japan International Cooperation Agency said. Modi's rise to the prime minister is also great news for Japan. The planned high-speed rail will run through the state of Gujarat, Modi's power base. He showed great interest in infrastructure development as chief minister of that state. In 2013, Modi attended a seminar on high-speed railway that Japan held in his state. Japanese officials at the time were convinced Modi is "eager to spread bullet train networks all over India, starting from his own state," a high-ranking bureaucrat at Japan's transport ministry said.

RBI keeps rates on hold, SECRETARY VIEW warns on inflation MUMBAI: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) kept its key policy repo rate unchanged at 8.0 percent on Tuesday, as widely expected, while expressing concerns about risks to its target to bring consumer inflation down to 6 percent by January 2016. The RBI also kept both the statutory liquidity ratio (SLR) and the cash reserve ratio (CRR) unchanged. SLR is the minimum bond holding requirements that lenders must set aside, while CRR determines the percentage of bank deposits that must be kept at Dr. Rajeev Shrivastav the central bank. However, it said it would cut the ceiling on info@aiita.org bonds that must be held-to-maturity from the current 24 percent to 22 percent in stages starting in the bi-weekly cycle beginning in Jan. 10, 2015. It expects to complete the process by September 2015. Only three of the 46 economists polled by Reuters ahead of the policy review had expected a rate cut. The repo rate has been unchanged since January, when the RBI increased it by a quarter percentage point. 'Second skin' Madhya Pradesh first in country in states' Asian Games-2014 India end 8th with spacesuits to ease ranking e-Ladli gets Platinum Award reduced medal tally from2010 astronauts' life Union Minister Tomar confers award to W&CD Minister Smt. Maya Singh Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Te c h n o l o g y ( M I T ) a r e developing an active "secondskin" spacesuit for future astronauts that incorporates small, spring-like coils that contract in response to heat. These spacesuits will give astronauts the much-needed mobility and flexibility in the space environment. The coils are made from a shape-memory alloy (SMA), a kind of material that "remembers" an engineered shape and, when bent or deformed, can spring back to this shape when heated. "With conventional spacesuits, you are essentially in a balloon of gas that is providing you with the necessary one-third of an atmosphere (of pressure,) to keep you alive in the vacuum of space," said Dava Newman, a professor of aeronautics, astronautics and engineering systems at MIT. Such skintight spacesuits were proposed earlier also but the hurdle was how to squeeze in and out of a pressurized suit that's engineered to be extremely tight. In such a condition, shape-memory alloys may provide a solution. These materials only contract when heated, and can easily be stretched back to a looser shape when cool. "These are basically self-closing buckles," said Bradley Holschuh, a researcher in Newman's lab, who who conceived the coil design. The group's designs and active materials may be used for other purposes such as in athletic wear or military uniforms. "We are trying to keep our astronauts alive, safe and mobile but these designs are not just for use in space," Newman concluded.

The meeting is expected to finalise the status of the long due multipurpose project. Both sides have agreed that the office of the project would be located in the Nepali side and will have the CEO on a rotational basis from Nepal and India, an official said. Once the status is finalised, it will pave the way for commencement of the project at the earliest. Then the process of forming the Pancheswor Development Authority (PDA) will begin. Once the PDA is set up, it will seek financial arrangement, put money and begin the development of the project. Rajendra Kishor Chhettri is leading the Nepali delegation while the Indian delegation is being led by Alok Rawat, secretary in the ministry of water resources, river development and Ganga rejuvenation. The PMP has been envisaged to have maximum peak power benefit to the order of 6,720 MW (Pancheshwar High Dam - 6,480 MW and Rupali Gad re-regulating dam - 240 MW) with average annual energy production of 12,333 gigawatt hours (GWh). The project will have a 315 metre-high rock-filled dam with a central earthen core whose reservoir would be extended north from the exact project site in the Nepali side.
INCHEON: The medal count went down but Indian sports still had lots to celebrate with the men's hockey team coming good after a long time to strike gold even as the legend of MC Mary Kom got bigger in a mixed Asian Games campaign for the country's athletes here. Games Special; Medals Table; Photos Pistol shooter Jitu Rai and freestyle grappler Yogeshwar Dutt were among the other heroes of the Games, where the Indian contingent entered with the aim to better or equal the record medal haul of 65 fetched in 2010. The huge Indian contingent fell short of the target and emerged with a diminished
tally to its credit in this growing South Korean business hub. (Complete list of Indian medal winners) India secured 11 gold medals, three fewer than what they collected in China four years ago, 10 silver (including the upgraded one of Manju Bala in women's hammer) and 36 bronze for a total haul of 57. Four of those gold medals came in athletics (two) and kabaddi (two) while archery, boxing, hockey, shooting, squash, tennis and wrestling accounted for the rest. The gold medal haul also placed India in the eighth position on the medals table, two rungs below where they had finished in China.
