PM Modi waves development card in Bihar election campaign
Santosh Shukla, Advocate president@aiita.org
The Call to Greatness What it Takes to Be Great Are some people born destined for greatness and others for mediocrity? Is great success and achievement determined by genetics and inborn talent? The simple answer is “no.” Greatness can be attained by everyone. We all have the potential to be great. Any man can be great if he makes up his mind to be the best person he can possibly be and to do what he does, the best way he can possibly do it. According to Dr, Moses, the secret to attaining greatness is simply to do every small thing in a great way. It is the nature of all success principles to be overly simplistic and basic. That is what makes them so true and yet so hard to accept and do. Their simplicity means that they often cannot be reduced to any simpler statement. It is like Albert Einstein's E=MC². It takes a whole lot of thinking and meandering to come up with the principle. But once it is found, it is so obvious and so simple. Vincent Van Gogh said “Great things are not done by impulse, but by a series of small things brought together.” This view is supported by recent scientific studies that studied many great men and women to find out what it takes to be great. Geoffrey Colvin, a senior editor for Fortune magazine reported, based on the findings of these scientific studies, that “the lack of natural talent is irrelevant to great success. The secret? Painful and demanding practice and hard work.”

GAYA : During his public meetings in Bihar during the election campaign for the 2014 Lok Sabha, Narendra Modi, then the prime ministerial candidate of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), would often speak about his backward caste antecedents. But at a rally in Gaya, Modi the Prime Minister (PM) did not bring up his caste origins. Instead, he spoke about development, just like his first rally in the state at Muzaffarpur in last
month. In his speech at Gaya, the PM focused on the backward economic status of Bihar over the past 25 years: the poor law and order situation; lack of educational opportunities, and the threat of the return of "Jungle raj part two", if the electorate were to vote for Bihar chief minister (CM) Nitish Kumar and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav. At Gaya, Modi also chose the occasion to give his vote of confidence to the BJP's embattled chief ministers - Vasundhara Raje of Rajasthan and Shivraj Singh Chouhan of Madhya Pradesh. "They brought out their states from the 'BIMARU' category. Under Raje, Rajasthan scaled new heights. The Chouhan government brought prosperity and peace in Madhya Pradesh. Give us one chance, we will bring Bihar out of the BIMARU category," said the Prime Minister. 'BIMARU', which literally means ailing, was an acronym of the 1990s to describe economically backward states of Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. Notably, this is the first time that Modi has backed Raje and Chouhan after both found themselves at the centre of controversies in early July. The Congress has ensured a near-washout of the monsoon session of Parliament demanding the resignations of Raje and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj for their help to former Indian Premier League commissioner Lalit Modi, while Chouhan is being asked to quit over the deaths in the Vyapam scam. Modi escalated the war of words with both Kumar and Yadav. He said Kumar's Janata Dal (United) or JD (U) stood for "janata ka daman aur utpidan".
UPA President Sonia Gandhi leads Environment, Climate Change Pose Great Challenges, Says President Pranab the party from the front
NEW DELHI: Environment and climate change are the most important issues and pose great challenges that need to be collectively responded to by people else their existence might be in danger, President Pranab Mukherjee said in Delhi. Addressing a group of probationers of Indian Forest Service (2014 Batch), he said practical and innovative solutions are to be found for forming policies and solving problems which they will be confronting. He said that in today's world, environment and climate change are most important issues and pose great challenges. "The human race as a collective body needs to respond to these challenges or their
very existence might be in danger," Mr Mukherjee was quoted as saying by Rashtrapati Bhavan. Noting that a large number of the probationers present were engineers, he urged them to use their expertise and core competence for improving the quality in management of forests. Addressing the probationers, the President said that they will not only be the implementer of policies but will also provide inputs for policies. He said that practical implementable solutions are to be found and any lopsided or imbalanced approach cannot be adopted. Theirs is not an ordinary administrative job, the release said. It demands innovative solutions to problems with which they will be confronted. How they serve the country and contribute in the development of the nation will depend on their attitude towards their job. He said that we have no right to spoil what we have inherited.
NEW DELHI: Even as talk is on of Rahul Gandhi's elevation to the top post in the Congress before the yearend, the Monsoon Session of Parliament has seen his mother and party president, Sonia Gandhi, leading the party from the front. For four days this week, the 68-year-old leader has been on the protest front, raising slogans along with party MPs. Senior party leaders who say Mr. Gandhi is still playing a supporting role told The Hindu that it was Ms. Gandhi who was giving the
directions and fashioning the party strategy, widely described as a maximalist one. “Despite our poor results in last year's Lok Sabha elections, Ms. Gandhi has demonstrated this week that the party still has leadership; experience counts,” a senior Congress Rajya Sabha member said. To those who express surprise that the Congress president should have adopted such a posture, which is in sharp contrast to the way she led the party during the years that the Vajpayee government had been in power, a senior party leader said: “Sonia Gandhi knows that the Congress needs to reinvent itself in the changed circumstances. She has demonstrated that the party can respond to different sorts of situations and circumstances.” www.aiita.org
