KATHMANDU: In a final ice-breaking moment that gave a huge boost to Saarc and floundering regional cooperation, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi shook hands with his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif, laughed and even patted him on the arm at the closing ceremony of the bloc's 18th summit here, to resounding applause from a relieved audience comprising leaders, diplomats and officials from the eight South Asian countries. In a photo-op that appeared to belie the recent animosity between the two neighbours, Modi and Sharif kept their

handshake for several seconds and chatted, smiling all the while, as Nepal Prime Minister Sushil Koirala, the host of the summit, looked on happily. Modi and Sharif had shaken hands and interacted briefly during the retreat at Dhulikhel outside Kathmandu earlier in the day. The two had otherwise studiously ignored each other during the summit, the sixth anniversary of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks that India has blamed on Pakistani elements. "India is for peaceful and cooperative relations with Pakistan. If this shake hand leads to that we will welcome it. However, emphasis is on meaningful dialogue," external affairs ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said later to reporters. To a question, he said he was unaware of what Modi and Sharif spoke about during the Dhulikhel retreat as "there was no one else. Nobody else knows what they talked of. They spoke of Saarc matters, but what specifically they discussed, no one is privy". During the concluding ceremony, as soon as Koirala declared the session closed, Modi turned to the immediate neighbour to his right, Bhutan PM Tshering Tobgay, and shook hands and chatted.

Gujarat to host Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) January 2015 The Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is celebrated on January 9 every year GANDHINAGAR: The Pravasi Bharatiya Divas celebrations will be organized from January 5 to 9, 2015 at the Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar to mark the centenary of Mahatma Gandhi's return to India. The Prime Minister's Office has approved the Gujarat Amit Thaker government's proposal to host the event. The Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is celebrated on January 9 every year to mark the contribution of the overseas Indian community in the country's development. It was on this day in 1915 that Mahatma Gandhi returned to India from South Africa and led India's freedom struggle. This was informed by Shri Amit Thaker, National Convener of Non Resident Indian (NRI) division of the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP). According to government officials "We have started preparations for the grand event which will be jointly organized by the ministry of overseas Indian affairs, Government of India and the Gujarat government. Gujarat will host the event

for the first time after its inception in 2003. In 2013, Narendra Modi, as the state's chief minister, had first proposed that the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas be held in Gujarat to mark the 100th year of Mahatma Gandhi's return from Africa. He had addressed the Gujarat session of the event in the presence of then Union minister for overseas Indian affairs Vayalar Ravi. "Mahatma Gandhi came back to India in 1915. The nation will celebrate 100 years of Gandhi's arrival from Africa in 2015. And we in Gujarat want to mark this occasion by hosting the PBD function in our state. I have requested the Centre to give us an opportunity to hold this event in Gujarat in 2015. I welcome you all to join it, if we get the Centre's nod," he had said. Sources in the Gujarat government said: "The event has been merged with the seventh Vibrant Gujarat Global Investor Summit 2015 scheduled to be held in mid-January. During the summit, a number of NRIs and NRGs visit Gujarat. We plan to hold several events at Gandhian sites like Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad, Porbandar and Dandi."

Geoffrey Colvin, a senior editor for Fortune magazine reported, based on the findings of these scientific studies, that “the lack of natural talent is irrelevant to great success. The secret? Painful and demanding practice and hard work.” What Dr. Moses doesn't agree with in this statement is the concept of “hard work.” Practice and consistency are important and so is work, but sometimes it only has to be “smart” and not hard.

Day dreaming, reality run in opposite directions While tracking brain activity in people who imagined scenes or watched videos, researchers have discovered that as people daydream, its path through the brain runs opposite reality. This could lead to the development of new tools to help untangle what happens in the brain during sleep and dreaming. "There seems to be a lot in our brains and animal brains that is directional; that neural signals move in a particular direction, then stop and start somewhere else. I think this is really a new theme that had not been explored," said Barry Van Veen, professor of electrical and computer engineering at University of Wisconsin-Madison. To zero in on a set of target circuits, the researchers asked their subjects to watch short video clips before trying to replay the action from memory in their heads. Others were asked to imagine traveling on a magic bicycle focusing on the details of shapes, colours and textures - before watching a short video of silent nature scenes. Using an algorithm, researchers were able to compile strong evidence of the directional flow of information. The team now plans to understand how the brain uses networks to encode short-term memory. The paper was published in the journal Neuro Image.

Madhya Pradesh to have country's first school for children of labourers BHOPAL: The foundation stone of the country's first 'Shramodaya School' for the children of labourers was laid by Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan. The school at Mugalia Chaap village near the state capital will be developed on the lines of the Navodaya Vidyalaya.The medium of instruction in the school would be English. The school will be constructed on 10 acres of land with facilities for hostel, staff quarters and a modern playground, among others. Sixty per cent of the students would be drawn from the families of labourers and farmers while the remaining seats would be open to locals, Chouhan said, adding that an Industrial Training Institute (ITI), too, would be set up there on five acres. Besides Bhopal, Shramodaya Schools are proposed to be set up in Indore, Jabalpur and Gwalior. The school will be for Std 6th to 12th with a capacity of admitting 1,120 students. "The school will be built at an estimated cost of Rs 30 crore. It will be the first school of its kind in the country for providing quality education to the children of labourers and farmers," Chouhan said on the occasion.The chief minister said that the institution will emerge as a centre of excellence and would be named as the 'Deendayal Shramodaya Vidyalala'. "As long as your 'mama' (Chouhan is popularly referred to by that term for maternal uncle in MP) is alive, no children would be allowed to face any difficulty in getting education for the want of money," he said, pointing to the children in the gathering.

Stressed must be given on formation of much more cooperative societies in three sectors, tourism, fisheries and construction sectors of these Islands.
