108 journalists killed in 2013: IFJ At least 108 journalists and media professionals, including 10 from India, were killed across the world while doing their jobs in 2013, according to the annual list released by the International Federation of Journalists. "At least 108 journalists and media staff lost their lives in targeted attacks, bomb attacks and other cross fire incidents around the world. The 23rd annual IFJ list shows that the deadliest regions for journalists were Asia Pacific, with 29 percent of the killings and the Middle East and Arab World with 27 percent," the IFJ said in a statement while releasing the list. The 23rd annual IFJ listed Syria as the most dangerous country for media professionals with 15 journalist deaths, followed by Iraq with 13, Pakistan, the Philippines and India with 10 each, Somalia with seven and Egypt with six. The number of killings is slightly down by 10 percent compared to last year's figure. The IFJ said that while the numbers of killings are down, levels of violence are still unacceptably high and there is an urgent need for governments to protect and enforce journalists' basic right to life. It has urged countries such as the Philippines, Pakistan and Iraq to take drastic action to stem the bloodbath. Region-wise, the Asia-Pacific was the worst, where it is estimated that 31 journalists were killed, followed by the Middle East and the Arab world with 29 journalists, and Africa with 22. Latin America comes in fourth position, with an estimated 20 media persons killed, and Europe recorded deaths of three journalists. The IFJ also said that violence against women journalists is on the increase. At least six women journalists lost their lives last year, while many others were the victims of sexual abuse, intimidation and discrimination. The federation has welcomed the UN resolution establishing an International Day to End Impunity Nov 23 every year to create awareness of crimes against journalists. "We give our full support to this new initiative which we believe will contribute to fighting impunity across the globe provided that governments are willing to adopt a zero tolerance approach to violence targeting journalists," said IFJ President Jim Boumelha in a statement.

AAP to contest UP's all 80 Lok Sabha seats LUCKNOW: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will contest all the 80 Lok Sabha seats from Uttar Pradesh, party spokesman Sanjay Singh said. Talking to IANS, Sanjay Singh, a close associate of AAP leader and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, said the party was pushing for clean and honest politics and hoped that issues like casteism and communalism will be relegated to the back burner. He admitted these two issues have long stood ground in the state and that they were major challenges. But, he said, time has come to change traditional politics and the common man has embraced
development as a major poll plank. Sanjay Singh said the party will be finalising names soon and efforts would be made to announce the first list of its Lok Sabha poll candidates by Feb 15. He underlined that the AAP candidates, like in New Delhi, would be common people, the 'aam aadmi'. He said the national executive of the party which met in Delhi Sunday has decided to field candidates in 20 states. It was almost certain that poet Kumar Vishwas would contest against Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi in Amethi constituency, he added. The AAP spokesman said the party will field candidates against Congress president and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi from Rae Bareli and Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Mulayam Singh Yadav in Mainpuri.

raise $4.3 million of the $61 million needed to help 1.8 million people, out of a total population of 4.6 million. “The success of the next planting season crucially hinges on the return of farming families to the fields,” FAO said in a news release. “Families who are unable to plant in March will have to wait one whole year before they can hope to harvest again. Failure to help these families will have dramatic consequences on the food security for a quarter of the Central African population. “The low production perceived from the last harvest coupled with a prevailing situation of chronic countrywide malnutrition is setting the stage for a full-scale food and nutrition security crisis should the next planting season fail.”CAR has been thrown into turmoil since mainly Muslim Séléka rebels launched attacks a year ago and forced President François Bozizé to flee in March. A transitional government has since been entrusted with restoring peace and paving the way for democratic elections, but armed clashes have erupted again and the mainly Christian antiBalaka movement has taken up arms.
