UN honours Nelson Mandela as champion of peace, reconciliation The United Nations family mourned the loss – and celebrated the enduring legacy – of Nelson Mandela, the former South African leader and peace advocate who passed away yesterday at the age of 95. As the UN flag was lowered to half-staff over the world body's Headquarters in New York, the 193-member General Assembly held a moment of silence to honour the memory of the man affectionately known as “Madiba,” who emerged from 27 years of imprisonment to become South Africa's first black President and is known worldwide for his compassionate yet determined efforts to dismantle the country's legacy of apartheid. “Today, in this Assembly of Nations, we mourn the loss of Mr. Nelson Mandela, one of our world's greatest leaders,” said Assembly President John Ashe, who added that the example of Mr. Mandela's life and actions, “demonstrates the difference one person can make in the face of adversity, oppression and prejudice, while maintaining a disposition of humility, humour and modesty that is so rare amongst people of his stature.” In his remarks, UN Deputy SecretaryGeneral Jan Eliasson hailed Mr. Mandela's courage, farsightedness, political skills, and kindness, adding that: “In a world too often riven and divided by vicious cycles of violence and revenge, perhaps the most impressive of President Mandela's gifts was his power of forgiveness, his ability to overcome bitterness and hatred.”

The Importance of Systems in Achieving Goals TM

Setting and achieving goals can be very overwhelming if systems aren't put in place. A system can take many different forms. It can be a simple post-it reminder or it can be a routine that you follow on a regular basis. According to Joe Dowie Once you start setting goals, it's tough not to want to set them in all areas of your life – school, work, exercise, your dreams, hobbies, the way you want to act, etc. If systems aren't put in place, it's very hard to keep everything organized and consistent. To achieve a goal, consistency is very important. We have all set out to do something, only to get off track. We'll remember a couple weeks later and try starting it up again, but it never works that way. A year later you think about what could have been. Adding a goal is usually a change in your life, and change takes time to work into your schedule. Starting out small is a great way to incorporate change – it's not too demanding of your time, but you're able to start building a foundation. For example, a lot of people have a goal to exercise more. Starting out with a 10-minute workout is a great place to start. It's not that difficult to squeeze 10 minutes into your busy schedule – finding a system to make it stick is the key. Maybe you walk during lunch, work out in the morning before you start your day or at the end of your day to get rid of all the stress, whatever works for you. Finding those systems that work for you, and not worrying about what other people are doing, will help you be very successful in achieving your goals. As you develop more and more goals and systems, it's important to keep these things organized. Starting your day with a checklist of goals is a great system to keep track of all your goals and systems. Some people have a big chalkboard, others put it on their refrigerator, and some even write it on their hand. It sounds funny, but finding your way is important. Don't look to do something just because it works for someone else. Find your path and be creative!

Kerimbayeva had to settle for $1,666 and 34 ranking points. After both the players exchanged early breaks, Linette broke the Kazakh in the ninth game to go up 5-4. My best investment was to join Bollywood: Saif Ali Khan

MUMBAI: In over two decades of association with Hindi films - as an actor, and now as a producer - Saif Ali Khan says his best investment ever has been to join the $2 million Indian movie industry, where the business is now almost "doubling". "My best investment is to join Bollywood. It's such a good investment. The business is doubling. When we started, things were not the same. It's a great time now for the filmmakers and actors," Saif, who made his acting debut with 1992 film "Parampara", said in an interaction. From featuring in potboliers like "Yeh Dillagi", "Main Khiladi Tu Anari", "Kachche Dhaage" and "Hum Saath-Saath Hain: We Stand United", Saif went on to do differentiated roles post-2000. He was seen in a different avatar in "Dil Chahta Hai", and then went on to star in key roles in movies like "Kal Ho Naa Ho", "Ek Hasina Thi", "Hum Tum", "Parineeta" and

"Salaam Namaste". "Omkara" came as an image-breaker for Saif, and he was noticed in films like "Race", "Tashan", "Love Aaj Kal", "Kurbaan" and "Aarakshan". Now awaiting the release of rustic actioner "Bullett Raja", the National Award-winning actor is glad to be a part of the present "exciting phase" in Indian cinema, where "experimentation" seems to be the key. "I don't think I could have done such a role (role in 'Bullett Raja') two or five years back," said the 43-year-old, who plays a gangster in the Tigmanshu Dhulia-directed film, which releases. "Now I think I am ready for these kinds of roles. Now I feel I have understood my work, and different kinds of films are being made. So, it's an exciting phase," he added. In fact, now Saif is convinced that an actor should do films other than the commercial ones. Citing the example of his mother, veteran actress Sharmila Tagore, Saif said: "If you look at my mother, she was a box office star, but she also did a lot of (different) cinema with Gulzar saab. It adds dimension to you (an actor)." The gist, as he sees it, is that "you should be a successful actor", and since "the industry is growing, one should not limit oneself against doing different kinds of films". Even as he is busy producing Hindi films under his banner Illuminati Films, Saif is not a Bollywood buff. "I don't watch Hindi films! I don't know why," said the actor, who completed his studies in England. "During my childhood days, I remember watching Doordarshan and Nirupama Roy crying on screen. That time I decided to watch (Hindi) comedy films. "Then I saw my mother's film...even she was crying, and I didn't want to see her crying, so I stopped watching it. When I started working in films, after shooting in them, I wanted to see something different. So I don't watch Hindi films. "I respect cinema but I don't watch Hindi films because I want to escape from my work after I finish working."

Garment workers struggle NGO wants PWD officials booked for death of 10 persons in mishap silently with sexual harassment JALANDHAR: An NGO, Arrive Safe, which is actively working for road safety, has written to police for including the names of public works department (PWD) officials, who failed to put railings along a bridge, which resulted in the death of 10 members of a family as their car fell off it on November 19 at Ramdas village near Ajnala in Amritsar district. "The bridge did not have any crash railings, making it highly prone to accidents. Concerned PWD officials are directly responsible for this criminal negligence, which led to the death of 10 persons in that mishap," said Arrive Safe president Harman Sidhu, himself a victim of a road accident that left him with permanent disability. "As per the Indian Road Congress guidelines, crash barriers on bridges are a must. They are designed to withstand the impact of vehicles of certain weight and certain angle while travelling at a specified speed. They are

supposed to guide the vehicle back on the road. National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and PWD of all states are supposed to follow these guidelines," Sidhu said, while arguing for registration of a case against PWD officials. "PWD is duty bound to ensure that roads and bridges are in proper condition so that there are minimum accidents. It is criminal on the part of PWD officials not to put the mandatory crash barriers on the bridge. Those precious 10 lives could have been saved if the barriers were in place," he said. In a letter to the station house officer (SHO) of Ajnala police station and Amritsar senior superintendent of police (SSP), Arrive Safe has urged filing of additional chargesheet in the FIR and book executive engineer, sub-divisional engineer and junior engineer of PWD of the area by name under sections 304-A (causing death due to negligence). The NGO has also marked copies of the letter to Punjab DGP and chief minister.

More power to her magic," added the young actor. Smita is known for her powerful performances in films like `Bhumika` and `Arth`. The actress died in 1986 following childbirth complications. BANGALORE: They are the faceless, voiceless women who keep the fashion industry in running condition. But in the hundreds of garment units where they toil for a living, sexual harassment and abuse are an everyday affair. But they have nowhere to go for any form of hearing or justice. Garment workers' union leaders admit their presence has done little to alleviate the travails of women in these sweatshops because of their gender. "Women workers complain to us about wages, work timings and other administrative issues but back out when it comes to reporting about sexual harassment," a garment factory union leader, Jayaram, admitted. The system isn't womanfriendly, especially when it comes to the touchy topic of sexual advances. Jayaram cites the example of Bala (name changed), a worker in a garment factory in Peenya Industrial Area, who was raped by a cab driver and dumped in front of Bangalore University gate two years ago. "Bala was returning home with three of her colleagues. Garment workers are so poor they can barely afford to travel by public transport. These girls boarded a Tata Sumo to go home.

The driver offered them some soft drinks laced with sedatives. The girls started feeling giddy. While two of them got down on the way, the other two dozed off in the cab. The driver then raped Bala and dumped her in front of Bangalore University the next morning," said Jayaram. The union learnt about the incident and filed a case with the State Women's Commission. "The Commission was of great support. Officials came to the factory and took her colleagues' statement. She was in hospital at that time. But after a few days, Bala appealed to the union to bury the case," he said. Bala had to factor in the possibility of being ostracized if news about the incident spread. Her plight is something every woman employee in a garment factory is aware of. Often, the women are lured by manipulative superiors, at times through inducement and sometimes through intimidation. "Supervisors or managers first try to win their confidence, while other workers get jealous. After some days, the men make sexual advances and try to exploit the woman. If the person resists, she loses her job, sometimes she is beaten up too. If she doesn't resist, the exploitation continues silently," says Jayaram. With the State's Women's Commission left headless for about a year, the unions guide these helpless women to Vimochana, an NGO that fights for women's rights. Often, if the victims raise their voice, they are muzzled. Jayaram recalls an incident where a woman worker who was ill-treated complained to the Women's Commission, but withdrew her complaint after she was armtwisted by the management. DEVIL AND DEEP SEA The garment industry, per se, has no unions. If you ask the factory managements, they say their employees are taken good care of. But from claustrophobic workplaces to sexual abuse, they lead oppressed lives.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon stressed today, adding that the recent upsurge of violence in the Central African Republic (CAR) is yet another reminder of the need for urgency in taking action. Speaking at the Elysée Summit for Peace and Security in Africa, hosted by the French Government in Paris, Mr. Ban noted that considerable progress has been made in recent years on the continent. “In many African countries, the economy is boosted, democracy has developed, civil society mobilized and stability and peace gained ground. regional conflicts is another cause of great concern, said Mr. Ban. “Mali has made important electoral progress, but the threat of extremism is very much alive and there is an urgent need for an inclusive dialogue that addresses the root causes of the conflict.” Meanwhile, Somalia has reestablished State institutions and adopted a Provisional Federal Constitution, but security progress has stalled and the situation is “fragile,” he noted. “I especially want to launch a call to action in the Central African Republic, before tomorrow's summit on this urgent issue,” the Secretary-General told world leaders. “The violence of recent days reminds us once again that we must act immediately.” In this regard, he called the Security Council resolution adopted yesterday, authorizing an African-led and French-backed peacekeeping force to quell the violence in CAR, an important step, adding that the deployment of additional French forces will be essential. Mr. Ban began his remarks by noting that the summit takes place as the world mourns the loss of Nelson Mandela, “one of the towering figures of our time.” “He touched our lives deeply and taught us what is possible in Africa and across the world.” On the margins of the summit, the SecretaryGeneral also held bilateral meetings with a number of African leaders, including the Presidents of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, South Sudan and Burundi, and the Prime Minister of Libya.

Need more American investment into India, says Sibal NEW DELHI: Communications Minister Kapil Sibal Monday called for greater investments from US-based companies in India to create jobs and buying capacity for the local population. "You need to invest in agriculture, medical (sector), electronics and education. Unless you help Indian economy, you won't be able to increase buying capacity of Indian consumers," Sibal said at the the ninth Indo-US Resurgence Summit held here. "The (US investors) are interested in selling their aircraft, defence equipments, but that is not the way to converge in this partnership." According to Indian government estimates, the Indo-US trade in merchandise goods for the calendar year 2012 stood at $62.85 billion with balance of trade surplus of $18.18 billion in favour of India. On the other hand, civilian and military orders placed

by India with American companies have created thousands of jobs in the US. Notwithstanding the growing trade ties, the US under its strategic partnership wants to co-develop new systems for civilian and military purposes with India. The minister, who was speaking at the event organised by the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce (IACC), also attacked the US government policy of restricting visas to Indian information technology (IT) professionals. "You are a country that talks about liberalisation of global economy and yet you are increasing cost of our IT sector by trying to impose restriction on our people trying to go to US. I don't think this is the right attitude for partners," Sibal said. Sibal added that the trade between the two countries can rapidly expand, and pointed at the enormous opportunity for the companies of two sides to collaborate in areas like manufacture of consumer durables as there is exponential demand in India.
