www.designfactory.org

The National Centre for Craft & Design and Design Factory are delighted to present a comprehensive and ongoing programme of training and development opportunities for both Design Factory members and the wider creative community.

Programme

Delivered by experienced and knowledgeable facilitators, the sessions cover topics that range from social media and selling yourself to applying for funding, writing a business plan and pricing your work. The January to July programme also includes inspirational artists’ talks, ‘Meet the Curator’ and portfolio review sessions and a group research and development visit.

This very practical workshop will explore different ways of planning ahead, and will help you decide whether a formal business plan is right for you, or whether a more creative and flexible approach to planning will work best. You will get a workpack which will help you devise a personal approach to planning that really suits you and your creative practice.

All sessions will take place at The National Centre for Craft & Design unless stated otherwise. Light refreshments are included. For full day sessions you are welcome to bring your own lunch or dine in our café. Book your place by ringing: 01529 308710 www.nationalcraftanddesign.org.uk www.designfactory.org.uk

The workshop is designed for people at all career stages – the thinking and discussion will work for you regardless of whether you are a start up or a mature business. You will be encouraged to think both strategically and tactically – where do you want to be in 3-5 years – and what actions do you need to start taking now in order to get there? You will come away with a much clearer idea of where you are heading, a personal action plan with clear goals and milestones, and a visual timeline. Facilitator: Pete Mosley Cost: DF members: Free. Non-DF members: £25 / £22 concession

Monday 11 Feb, 1.30 – 4.30pm Introduction to Social Media Have you noticed how some people are using Blogging, Youtube, Twitter and Facebook to reach a whole new range of new customers for their business? Ever wondered how they do it? And whether you could too? This interactive workshop will show you how to start developing a social media strategy that will bring your business more customers and sales without swallowing all your time or making common and costly mistakes. Questions that will be addressed include: How can I use social media to increase sales? Which social media should I choose? How many? How often? How can I integrate social media with my website? What are the risks and downsides? How can I know whether it’s working? Facilitator: David James Ross Cost: DF members: Free. Non-DF members: £15 / £12 concession

Thursday 21 Feb, 10am – 4.30pm, LCB Depot, Leicester Social Media Setup Day

Monday 11 Mar, 1.30 – 3.30pm ‘Your Story’ (artist talk) – Katrin Moye

Get social media set up properly in a day through this practical workshop to be held at LCB Depot in Leicester. If you know social media is important but have been struggling to get it set up right, this course is for you. Guided by an experienced Social Media practitioner and teacher, by the end of the day you will have established a professional presence and be live on up to three social networks or social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Youtube etc) and have linked these up to your website.

Katrin Moye is a multi award winning ceramicist, specialising in highly decorative domestic ceramics. Recently she received a large grant from Arts Council England to support her in a new direction into more ambitious, one off collectors pieces plus a new body of work in two dimensions, including watercolour painting and printmaking. All of her ceramics are hand made in white earthenware clay, with decorations hand applied with coloured slips and underglazes. Her decorative style and subject matter recall her childhood memories of growing up in England and Germany in the 1970s, with direct references to her German family roots and Scandinavian style influences from her Danish godmother. A more recent development is a new direction exploring the detailed repeating patterns found in tree and plant life, and an interest in mid century English artists such as John and Paul Nash, Eric Ravilious and Enid Marx. Katrin’s work has become much sought after and is represented in galleries all over the UK and beyond, and in specialist retailers such as Liberty.

The exact course content will be tailored to participants’ needs and the workshop is limited to eight places so that hands-on help will be available. Participants must bring a laptop with WiFi and be willing to take on important preparation work before the day. To take part in this day, it is recommended that you have first taken the introduction to social media workshop. Facilitator: David James Ross Cost: £35

Thursday 18 July, 1.30 – 4.30pm Presentation Skills: Public Speaking

Ashley Thomas is a designer and illustrator based on the edge of the Peak District. She graduated in 2007 from Staffordshire Uni with a first class honours degree in Surface Pattern Design. In 2008 she launched her own brand of home accessories working from a design studio in her spare room. Over the past five years her business has gone from strength to strength and her work is now available in interior boutiques, gift shops and galleries in the UK, Paris and Tokyo. Ashley has worked on commissioned projects from a range of prestigious companies such as Laura Ashley and Mamas and Papas. Her latest collaboration with Debenhams has showcased her work onto high streets across the country. Come along and hear Ashley tell her creative story and see examples of her work that is described as playful, edgy and feminine.

A great voice is a real asset in the working life of creative practitioners. It can help when making a presentation about your work, whilst delivering workshops, for interviews or dealing with the media. If you mumble or speak in monotone, you won’t be getting your message across as effectively as you should. This workshop will begin with practical whole class and group exercises designed to develop vocal projection and speech clarity. Delegates are asked to bring written descriptions of their work and products for use in the practice exercises. Working for a time in groups of three or four, delegates will listen to each other and give feed back on the content, clarity, audibility and impact, supported by the course leader. The workshop will finish with each delegate giving a short presentation to the whole group, followed by constructive feedback.
