DESIGNER MAGAZINE DECEMBER 2021 / ISSUE 256

Welcome to the December issue of Designer. As always, it is a fantastic way to end the year, with a magazine packed with all the results of the Designer Awards 2021. We had a truly fantastic celebration of the very best of design that the industry has to offer and it was just incredible to be able to do it in person once again after last year’s necessarily virtual version of the awards. That was great fun to do of course, but was no match for the chance to get together, network, and salute our winners in person. Our experience with last year’s awards – in having to switch to a very different format at relatively short notice – is perhaps a reflection of something that has been at the centre of things for probably everyone in the industry: adaptability. Manufacturers, architects, design studios, retailers have all had to think and act fast, to work out what they needed to do in order to face up to the truly unique challenges that we have all come up against. Some of these changes are here to stay, others will revert to something more akin to what was once ‘normal’.

Leading the way by example are our award winners and finalists, who have all shown just what is possible through hard work and creativity. It is genuinely the most inspiring way to sign off for the year.

SOCIAL

And while we would all have chosen not to have gone through any of this upheaval, the experience has at least served to demonstrate that there are always alternative ways to get things done. Perhaps that is one very positive lesson for us to bear in mind for the future.

Lifetime Achievement Award 2021: Ross Lovegrove The Mark Wilkinson Award for Lifetime Achievement this year goes to a world-renowned designer whose towering futuristic influence continues to resonate and inspire.

T

he list of past winners of the Mark Wilkinson Lifetime Achievement Award – named after the legendary kitchen and furniture designer who died in 2017 – reads as a real who’s who of many of the giants of design, and includes names such as Robin Levien, Johnny Grey, Karim Rashid, Sieger Design, Marc Newson, Matteo Thun, Zaha Hadid, Arik Levy, and Phillippe Starck among others. As this year’s winner, Ross Lovegrove is one of the world’s most successful industrial designers. Born in Cardiff, he graduated with a first class degree in Industrial Design at Manchester Polytechnic, followed by a Master of Design from the Royal College of Art. During the 1980s, Lovegrove worked in West Germany for Frog Design, on products such as the Walkman for Sony as well as Top: Ross Lovegrove receives the Mark Wilkinson Award for Lifetime Achievement from Designer Editor Martin Allen-Smith Above left: Twin’Z city car concept for Renault Solar Above right: Tree street lamp collaboration with Artemide

computers for Apple. He moved to Paris as consultant for Knoll International, and was invited to join the Atelier de Nimes along with the likes of Jean Nouvel and Phillipe Starck, consulting for brands such as Louis Vuitton and Dupont. He returned to London in 1986, setting up his own studio a few years later. His list of clients over the years have included some of the biggest global brands, among them Kartell, Cappellini, Peugeot, Herman Miller, Artemide, Airbus, and many more. One of his landmark designs – the iconic Istanbul Collection for bathroom brand VitrA –won the Design Classic Award at the Designer Awards in 2014. His work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Pompidou Centre in Paris, and the London Design Museum where in 1993 he curated the first permanent collection. His own work is held in permanent collections of various design museums around the world, underlining the uniqueness and huge significance of his output. Announcing the award, Designer Editor Martin Allen-Smith said: “Lovegrove describes himself as an ‘evolutionary biologist’ but he is also a visionary, and a sculptor of technology, exploring how we can harness elements from the natural world and transform them into a futuristic form. Although our award for him acknowledges his incredible past body of work, his ongoing creativity and ideas feel much more like a window into the future.”

Contribution to the Industry Award Bathroom industry stalwart David Hance is saluted for a hugely successful career characterised by identifying and developing new products and markets…

T

David Hance (pictured right) receives the Contribution to the Industry Award from Designer Editor Martin Allen-Smith

he Contribution to the Industry category is reserved for a non-designer whose work in the sector extends way beyond the norm in terms of the wider impact that their work has had on the industry. The winner this year is a businessman whose determination and passion for identifying and delivering new styles and innovative products, have made him a major player in the bathroom industry for almost a quarter of a century. David Hance started his working life in public service, joining the Metropolitan Police from school and graduating as a top student. Following his time in the force, he joined his father’s business in 1987 working as a manufacturers’ agent, selling a broad selection of plumbing and bathroom products. In 1998, he created Crosswater, buying the name for £50 from Companies House. Using a £15,000 loan from his mother and the same from the bank, he set about creating a business that could offer wellpriced European-designed products on a next-day service. Exceptional customer service was the

most important aim, and the business grew rapidly, acquiring the Simpsons Shower Door and Bauhaus Bathroom Furniture brands in the early 2000s. In 2010, he merged Crosswater with the Bathroom Brands Group, and has served as an executive director for the group since then. Very recently, he announced his intention to step down from this day-to-day role, remaining as a non-exec director, and instead looking to spend more time on family and life outside of work. Over the past 23 years, the business has grown its revenue from £907,000 in year one to over £100m in 2021. Hance attributes much of this success to the team within the business, and to great suppliers and customers, many of whom he says have become very good friends over the years. Martin Allen-Smith, Editor of Designer, said: “David has been a towering presence in the bathroom sector for many years. His hard work and determined vision has left a huge impression not only on his own business but also the wider industry. We are delighted to pay tribute to him with this award.”

DESIGNER MAGAZINE DESIGNER AWARDS 2021

Editor’s Choice Award This special award is selected by the editor of Designer magazine as a design worthy of special recognition for its innovation and creative vision. This year’s winner is Edge by Westin, a clever cooker hood design that maximizes the effectiveness of slim profile hoods. It efficiently captures fumes over a wider area without the need for a bigger hood or more powerful motor. Martin Allen-Smith, Editor of Designer, said: “UK manufacturer Westin celebrates 100 years in business this year, so congratulations to them for that, and for winning the Editor’s Choice Award for this incredibly well-designed and brilliantly executed system.”

DESIGNER MAGAZINE DESIGNER AWARDS 2021

Design Classic

Acknowledging a landmark design that has demonstrated the true power of creative product development WINNER: Series 200 and Series 400 Ovens by Gaggenau The Design Classic Award was created to recognised an influential product that has gone beyond its initial impact to cement a place in the hearts and minds of designers and specifiers for the longer term. This year’s winner is the iconic Series 200 and Series 400 oven proposition from Gaggenau, which have both become ubiquitous in high-end kitchen schemes over the years. Martin Allen-Smith, Editor of Designer magazine, presented the award to Simon Plumbridge, Category Manager at Gaggenau UK at the awards event last month. Allen-Smith said: “As you can imagine, in the course of the work we do on Designer, we get to see many kitchen case studies, and a staggering proportion of them feature these ovens as a core component, in terms of both functionality and design.”

Above: Simon Plumbridge, Category Manager for Gaggenau (pictured right) receives the Design Classic Award from Designer Editor Martin Allen-Smith Series 400 range

Created by the Gaggenau design team – led by Head of Design Sven Baacke – and launched in 2013, both the Series 200 and Series 400 are built on the same core but each with distinct design lines. One has a striking presence in the room, with a sculptural appearance and handleless door design all made to stand out with its stainless steel front. The other has a visually more subtle take, with an all-glass door front and colour options of anthracite, metallic and silver, intended to blend in neatly to a kitchen design. Allen-Smith added: “From a user’s point of view, these ovens offer simple, stylish looks but have managed to keep the controls intuitive. For designers, they represent statement appliances that are typically used to reinforce the high-end aspirations of their kitchen designs. They are highly worthy of the title of ‘design classics’ and we’re delighted to recognise them with this year’s Design Classic Award.” Gaggenau / gaggenau.com

DESIGNER MAGAZINE EXIT / TILE STYLE

EXIT

One last thing from this month’s magazine…

Tile manufacturer Craven Dunnill Jackfield teamed up with British artistic duo Joanne Tatham and Tom O’Sullivan to create a public art installation for the newly renovated Studio Voltaire in South London, the latest in a series of the brand’s artistic commissions amongst Art on the Underground and the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. The vibrant new installation appears across three public toilets in Studio Voltaire’s South London building. Featuring bespoke hand-glazed ceramic tiles by Craven Dunnill Jackfield, the installation uses ten unique glazes across the overall scheme. The artists say that the design employs both humour and the absurdity of the unexpected as a strategy for both disruption and generosity. Two of the toilets make use of a limited, contrasting colour range while the third culminates in waterjet cut friezes with staring cartoon-like faces – a recurring motif in both artists’ work. Intersecting with the surrounding sanitaryware, the sink becomes a mouth when placed below two staring ceramic eyes while another tiled pattern surrounds the toilet like a throne. Outside the toilets, a decorative, hand-painted mural of the commission’s title connects the three rooms. Supported by the Art Fund, the art installation is one of two new commissions at Studio Voltaire.
