Welcome...
to the new look designerati
We celebrate a big milestone for the designerati awards in this issue – our 21st anniversary! – and we marked the occasion in real style with a spectacular afternoon and evening at Wembley Stadium in November. For those who were there to join the fun, a huge thank you from me and the whole designerati team for your support for the awards, and in turn for helping to recognise and salute the very best in K&B design innovation and creativity. Over 21 years, we’ve seen trends come and go, but the challenges facing designers seem to multiply with each year. Material and product spec options continue to broaden, client’s expectations and demands grow and grow, and all the while, costs are soaring for anyone trying to run a business. But as we’ve so often seen in this industry, adversity really can be a force for good. It leads to re-evaluation, reinvention and a
“AS WE’VE SO OFTEN SEEN IN THIS INDUSTRY, ADVERSITY REALLY CAN BE A FORCE FOR GOOD” reassessment of the status quo. It can also lead to truly innovative new products, interior schemes and ways of thinking. So truly ‘hats off’ to everyone who continues to succeed against such odds, for battling through some of these challenges and continuing to seek ways of turning them into creative opportunity. All of this year’s finalists have done just that, and that’s why they deserve our fulsome congratulations for getting to this stage of our awards process. So, a very hearty ‘well done’ to all of the finalists and winners in this year’s designerati awards and thank you for the role you have played in delivering for your clients, for pushing the industry’s creative reputation and, hopefully, for inspiring others to strive to achieve similar in their work too.

Elemental Thinking Mercurio is the latest addition to the CRL Quartz collection from CRL Stone. Featuring a soft grey veining, the surface is intended to offer an industrial-style touch to a kitchen space. Available in thicknesses of 20mm and 30mm, Mercurio comes in a slab size of 3300 x 1650 mm, making it suitable for large areas including kitchen islands. CRL Quartz is scratch, heat and stain resistant and, unlike natural materials such as marble, it does not need to be sealed, is non-porous and can be cleaned with soap and water or a mild detergent. Natural Selection Green House, a family home inspired by nature, designed by Hayhurst & Co, has been named RIBA House of the Year 2023. The project creatively reimagines a typical terraced house, replacing an existing property down an alleyway, on a confined urban plot. Clad in polycarbonate panels and screened with dense planting, the discrete exterior hides a highly unusual, compact new home. The Riad-inspired urban oasis is flooded with greenery and natural light and has been described by RIBA’s jury as a ‘domestic greenhouse’ and ‘extraordinary ordinary house’. Located in a conservation area in Tottenham, the doubleaspect views to the gardens and a roof terrace further emphasise the property’s interrelation to its former, surrounding greenery. The atrium’s rooflights bring daylight into the heart of the home, casting shadows on the walls and changing with each season. Hayhurst & Co delivered the vision of owners Tom and Amandine who wanted to create a low-cost, functional five-bedroom home for their growing family, that maximised living space, gave a sense of airiness and access to nature. On the ground floor, the kitchen, dining and living areas flow into one other with an occasional step in level, and can

be subdivided by floor-to-ceiling sweeping curtains. Photographer Tom utilises the generous space and ceiling height to host shoots. Bold, green-painted steel stairs are the core feature of a vast and dramatic central atrium leading to the bedrooms and bathrooms. The house embraces a ‘biophilic design’ approach. The
atrium, bamboo planting and exterior sliding polycarbonate screens, reference the verdant character and market gardens that once stood on the back land plot and blur the boundaries between indoors and outside spaces. The screens and planting also enable the family to adjust the levels of privacy and ventilation.
Intelligent use of materials, including Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) walls, reclaimed concrete blocks and recycled cork rubber flooring maximise the energy efficiency of the property, while the central block form is an efficient approach to reduce operational energy use. Air-source heat pumps and solar panels are in use to also reduce energy demand. Dido Milne, Chair of the jury, said: “Green House is a true oasis within the city. It is both airy and cosy, bold yet respectful of its neighbours. Your eye is simultaneously drawn upwards to open sky and down and out across the living room to verdant greenery. “The close architect and client relationship, with a joint desire to deliver a truly sustainable home, is evident in all of the design decisions and detailing. On a confined urban site, the house was delivered to a tight budget with an economy of means – and it remains richer for it. Nowhere do you feel the site or budget was restricted. It feels both luxurious, homely, deeply private and relaxing. It’s an extraordinary ordinary house and a remarkable collaboration.” Hayhurst & Co / hayhurstand.co.uk RIBA / architecture.com

Think you know great service? As a premier distributor of furniture-making materials in the UK and Ireland, James Latham’s commitment to exceptional service is more than a claim – so we wanted our customers to confirm it… In a survey of nearly 18,000 customers, over 80% scored us 8/10 or above for service, with a third giving a full 10/10. As John McCaffrey, from Starbank Panel Products Limited, puts it: “We choose to trade with James Latham because of the product range, the people, and the trust we have built over 40 years. They are an integral part of our supply chain and a partner to our business.” Matt Kelly, joiner at Plaey, added: “I love how passionate and engaged the staff are at James Latham. It never feels like a sales pitch, more like a collaboration.” These comments not only highlight our massive selection of timber and decorative materials, but also the importance of the ‘people’ element within the business. Our skilled materials and logistics professionals have the specialist knowledge needed to help customers make the right choices – and always go the extra mile to ensure their needs are met. Andy Hall, from Retail Furniture Ltd, added: “James Latham’s knowledge of products is second to none. They’re always happy
to help, going the extra mile to find and transfer products from other branches when they’re not immediately available.” It’s this robust supply chain which helps us consistently keeps up with demand. 13 strategically-placed UK and Irish depots hold over 75,000m3 of stock and our fleets operate day and night, ensuring daily, nationwide deliveries and swift responses to short-lead requests. Matt Cox, from SJC Bespoke Joinery Ltd, said: “I would highly recommend James Latham to anyone. They respond quickly to quotes, and if you have any queries about your orders, they’ll help in any way they can. Delivery is always prompt, and their teams always go the extra mile – they once unloaded all the stock for me in the pouring rain!” Achieving this level of customer satisfaction is not something that’s happened overnight. We’ve been in business for over 265 years, constantly innovating to address the needs of every client, whether they’re a solo joiner or large-scale manufacturer.
To help us live up to our hardwon reputation, we’re embedding a 24-point ‘Lignum Charter’ at all of our depots to ensure customers’ needs – be that nextday deliveries, increased operating hours or enhanced expertise – are consistently met. Is your distributor not living up to your expectations? Why not let us show you how we do things: lathamtimber.co.uk/greatservice

Case 5.0 kitchen for Boffi
The Mark Wilkinson Award for Lifetime Achievement is named in memory of one of the industry’s finest designers whose impact on the kitchen and furniture industry still resonates today, some six years after his passing. The list of past winners of our Lifetime Achievement Award really is a remarkable roll call of industry giants. It includes names such as Robin Levien, Johnny Grey, Karim Rashid, Marc Newson, Matteo Thun, Zaha Hadid, Sieger Design, Arik Levy, Dick Powell & Richard Seymour, Roberto Palomba, and Phillippe Starck. This year’s winner is a giant of industrial design in the Italian bathroom, furniture and hospitality sectors. Piero Lissoni is an architect, art director and designer, recognized as one of the masters of contemporary design. For over thirty years, he has developed projects the world over in the fields of architecture, landscapes and interiors, as well as in product and graphic design. Projects are as wide-ranging as they are beautiful, and include work on private villas, residential buildings, offices, restaurants, hotels, theatres and yachts. As well as being Founder and Design Principal for his own Milan- and New York-based design studio, he is also art director for big interiors brands including Alpi, B&B Italia, Boffi, Living Divani, Porro and Sanlorenzo, among others. He has already received a host of international awards, including the Good Design Award, the Red Dot Award and the Compasso d’Oro. Martin Allen-Smith, Editor of designerati, said: “Throughout all of his output over the years, there have been some ever-present watchwords – simplicity, functionality, and beauty. His furniture and interiors always take a pared-back form, with minimalist lines, and finishes that embrace natural materials. His eye for proportion is also what truly sets him apart and, a desire to steer clear of ‘boring functionalism’ and instead bring a little of his beloved Italian lifestyle into everything he does.” Lissoni & Partners / lissoniandpartners.com

James Herriot (right) receives the Services to the Industry Award from designerati Editor Martin Allen-Smith
Services to the Industry Award On the 40th anniversary of the North-East-based kitchen manufacturer, Callerton Co-Founder James Herriot has been announced as the winner of the Services to the Industry Award The Services to the Industry honour is reserved for an individual whose efforts in the sector extend way beyond the norm in terms of the wider impact that their work has had on the industry. This year’s winner has had an incredible career in kitchens, in which he has stayed true to a set of core visions and beliefs that have stood the test of time. James Herriot’s career began with property development in the 1970s, but soon transitioned to a focus on kitchens in the early 80s. He and his business partner Gordon Stanger-Leathes spotted what they considered to be a few gaps in the industry’s offering at the time, so they set about creating their own new kitchen business, prioritising practicality, design, and installation. Martin Allen-Smith, Editor of designerati, said: “Callerton celebrates
its 40th anniversary this year. And I think everyone can appreciate what a remarkable achievement in itself that is. It has been done in no small part due to an emphasis on partnership and collaboration, not least with a longestablished network of retailers – built up over time through trust and close working relationships – who share the same passion for quality and excellence. “Partnership too with other suppliers, helping to co-ordinate a group of key brands to combine resources and ideas on marketing the three core pillars of successful kitchen projects: great design, great products, and great project management.” Herriot has contributed more widely too, as a former chairman of the KBSA with a genuine and personal passion for education and training within the industry.
Recently stepping down as Chairman of Callerton, he has recently turned his considerable skills to writing, penning a book during the pandemic called The Sabbatical, a poignant letter to his grandchildren juxtaposing the highs of life with it inevitable lows. And readers will soon be treated to another tome – Insights to Kitchen Design – encapsulating his passion and vast experience in the world of kitchen design. Sharing his perspectives in this way is also very much in-keeping with the philosophy that he and Stanger-Leathes have strived for since founding Callerton 40 years ago – based on the aim of ‘turning dreams to reality’. 46 EDITOR’S CHOICE AWARD ERA by AGA
This special award is selected by the editor of designerati as a product worthy of special recognition for its innovation and creative vision. This year’s winner is ERA by AGA, a reinvention of the famous range cooker that brings a kitchen icon fully up-todate. The ERA was developed by David Fisher, Chief Design Consultant to AGA, who was asked to consider how a new, disruptive and mould-breaking cooker from AGA might look and feel. Fisher said: “The use of glass lends ERA a liquid quality as the sleek black glass cascades down from the top. The design is clean, cohesive and beautiful while also functionally brilliantly capable. It is modern and progressive while also faithful to a heritage stretching back more than 100 years.” Controlled by touchscreen, the cooker is topped with an induction hob beside a cast-iron hotplate. Alongside a fan oven, ERA also has two cast-iron ovens which cook using radiant heat. Martin Allen-Smith, Editor of designerati, said: “It takes a great deal of care and attention to update a much-loved classic product, bringing it into the here and now without losing the essence of what made it so special in the first place. It represents a watershed moment for AGA and promises to be the starting point for more innovations to come.”

BRAND ACHIEVEMENT OF THE YEAR
55 After noting the declining numbers of talented installers, and the need to spark a renewed interest in the installer field, GROHE initiated the GROHE Installer Vocational Training and Education (GIVE) Program to support, aid, and grow promising individuals. With its GIVE Program, GROHE supports plumbing schools across the EMENA region with the training and education of aspiring young installers. GROHE enhances local school facilities by creating a uniform approach, with modern equipment, training material, experienced trainers, and a written examination that sets new industry standards. Each GIVE school is provided with a fully functioning installer-training space with modern equipment and training material. After graduation, GROHE supports the students in gaining work experience or placements at GROHE partners. In the UK, a successful training facility of this kind has been running for several years with the Colchester Institute, with this blueprint being used internationally to provide skilled installers on a global scale. As of June 2023, the GIVE Program has over 65 collaborations
with schools in the EMENA region and aims to reach up to 100 schools and 5,000 students per year by the end of 2025. Additional goals for the GIVE Program are to encourage more women into the profession to help bridge the gender gap – recent research suggests that less than 3% of the 150,000+ UK plumbers are female. Elsewhere, the GIVE Program is continuing to work towards supporting young people in underserved communities in obtaining good prospects for the future by providing valuable skills and education, helping to enhance career potential. GIVE most recently graduated 50 students from Accra Technical training Centre in Ghana. The GIVE Program will also be active in Cameroon and Benin by the end of 2023. Jonas Brennwald, Leader, LIXIL EMENA, said: “Our industry offers so many opportunities for young people around the globe who cannot only make a living but make a positive impact with plumbing for a sustainable future. Well trained and professional personnel are pivotal to our industry, and we’re committed to supporting and championing those starting out.”

FINALIST: Westin – rebrand campaign A bold and ambitious rebrand programme came after detailed research with key customers to understand perceptions of the previous branding and to inform future direction. The end result adds to the brand’s reputation as ‘problem-solvers’ with an added emphasis on aspirational product design. The new ‘W’ marque, a shift to real kitchen photography instead of CGI, and showcasing the skilled individuals who create the company’s highly bespoke offering all combine in a brilliant exercise in how to refresh and renew a well-established brand.
FINALIST: Simon Taylor Furniture – apprenticeship scheme and craft skills open day In a partnership with Rycotewood College – where company founder Simon Taylor himself trained as a master cabinetmaker – a level 2 bespoke cabinetmaking apprenticeship programme sees apprentices learn on a part work-based scheme. Having run the scheme for two years, Simon Taylor Furniture this year held its first Apprenticeship Open Day offering the chance for potential recruits and their parents to visit the workshop to see furniture being hand-crafted by cabinetmakers and apprentices.

Delivering material success It wouldn’t be the designerati awards without the famous ‘d’ trophies, which honour the achievements of talented designers in the UK and beyond… The opulent, flowing aesthetic that adorned this year’s trophies were created from Corian® Solid Surface in Evening Prima, and in keeping with an established tradition, material supplier CDUK donated the trophies to celebrate the awards. The trophies were designed as a tightknit collaboration between CDUK and the designerati team, as the supplier supports customers in the process of sourcing the best products and materials, and works closely with them on the design journey, helping them unlock their full potential through expert advice and technical knowledge. With a strong reputation as the exclusive UK distributor of Corian® Solid, CDUK is also the supplier of other innovative surface materials, including PaperStone®, Polygood®, and M|R Walls, as well as complementary products from The 1810 Company. Most recently, CDUK became the exclusive supplier of VIVARI® basins and MIXA® sinks made from Corian® Solid Surface in the UK and Ireland, strengthening its portfolio of coordinating surfaces and products for kitchens, bathrooms, and washrooms. The MIXA® collection features
eleven single and eight double sinks, available in stainless steel, black, and white enamel, along with two extra-large stainless-steel options. These sinks, clad in Corian® Solid Surface, are delivered pre-fabricated for easy installation by the fabricator. This seamless combination of MIXA® sinks and Corian® Solid Surface worktops prevents joint and edge infiltration by liquids and dirt. Offering a blend of Corian® colour choices with the elegance of stainless steel or statementmaking black and white enamel bases, these sinks are durable, heat resistant, and hygienic. Additional accessories including drain covers, waste kits, grids, and baskets are also available. The VIVARI® basin range is diverse, comprising of 93 models that include vanity tops, countertops, undermounted styles, and a singular freestanding basin. Customisable to design needs and available in various Corian® Solid Surface colours, these basins offer designers creative freedom and unique customisation options. VIVARI® basins are sturdy, non-porous, and easy to maintain, making them suitable for both bespoke bathrooms and commercial use.

Joined-up thinking
RAK Ceramics unveiled an innovative hidden cooking system in which the countertop operates as the hob. With the cooking system integrated within the porcelain surface, the power of induction is brought into the equation, enabling the worktop to be used to heat the cookware placed on top without the surface getting hot. Colour choices are varied, with a selection of marble, concrete, stone, wood or metal effect finishes available. The cooking component can be operated though a remote controller attached to the system or by app, allowing management of zone control, timer, power, temperature, and a security shutdown. Although not launched to market until early 2024, Italian manufacturer Elica revealed its LHOV design for the first time back in May. The appliance takes a bold approach of uniting a hob, hood and oven in one unit, utilising a single user interface. Conceived and designed by Elica’s Chief Design Officer Fabrizio Crisà, the brand says that its latest addition establishes a new category in household appliances. Elica says the name LHOV evokes the three essential kitchen elements (hob, oven, ventilation), but also the ‘love’ that has led to the combination of them into a single product for the first time. Everything in its place French designer Philippe Starck brought some clear thinking to bear on his latest bathroom design for German bathroom brand Duravit. Arranged like a Japanese lunchbox, the Bento Starck Box bathroom series features several internal compartments to enable items to be organised within the piece. With divided wet and dry areas, the basin and bathtub are intended to offer customisation in the way the user arranges their most-used toiletries and accessories within easy reach. Presented for the first time at ISH 2023 in Frankfurt, Germany, the Bento Starck Box includes washbasin, toilet sets and a bathtub, and is designed to be combined with the dimensions of the furniture and taps of the Starck-designed White Tulip series. The 650mmwide washbasin is made from DuraCeram and offered alongside countertop basins in a range of sizes, all available in white and white satin matt. Starck said: “I have been in Japan for periods of my life, and I was always so happy when I saw my bento lunch box arrive each day, because it was clear, it was serene. You know exactly where you will find the rice, the soup, or the sushi. It is perfect and simple. “I have had bento boxes in my house for 50 years now. When I am in my bathroom, I want to be able to keep my mind very clear, so I considered how something like this could help with making a place for everything you need without thought. That’s why organisation is freedom, especially when it is also elegant.” Duravit / duravit.co.uk
Access all areas German bathroom manufacturer KEUCO teamed with industrial designers Studio F.A. Porsche to create a new barrier-free range of bathroom fixtures. The AXESS collection includes a minimally-styled folding support rail and rail system, grab rails and a freestanding stool to make the bathroom space fully accessible. Christian Schwamkrug, Design Director at Studio F. A. Porsche, said: “It was our wish to meet the highest aesthetic demands and yet incorporate the specific needs of a barrierfree bathroom system. Our aim was to develop accessible bathroom products from a completely new perspective. Timeless, very clear, aesthetic forms, permanently perceived as beautiful, even after many years.” KEUCO / keuco.com
Less is more British design studio Barber Osgerby teamed with Bette to develop the BetteSuno bathroom collection. The new range includes washbasins and a bath that combine visual lightness with the strength and durability of glazed titanium steel in a line-up created for use in a variety of projects including private homes, hotels and restaurants. The collection includes two circular, one-piece washbasins made of glazed titanium steel: a bowl washbasin and a floor-standing washbasin. Edward Barber said: “The collection has a beautiful, handcrafted character and its sculptural qualities are emphasised by the circular and conical design.” Bette / my-bette.com/en

Heart of the home Poggenpohl unveiled Heart of Gold, a kitchen that incorporates a hidden Gaggenau cooktop in a Consentino worksurface. The door fronts on the front of the island feature integrated cooktop controls and are made from the same material as the worktop. The red door front, seen on the units at the back on the tall wall units and oven housing is Burgundy Soft Matt, which is made from Fenix anti-fingerprint nanotechnology. The glass showcase cabinets also feature Burgundy Soft Matt internally. Poggenpohl / poggenpohl.com
A classic reinterpreted Bathroom brand Laufen revealed a new interpretation of its iconic ILBAGNOALESSI collection, harnessing advances in materials and technology since the original range. Designed by Stefano Giovannoni, the product is one of the brand’s longest-running and most successful collections. In cooperation with design brand Alessi, Laufen has reinterpreted the range utilising Saphirkeramik, a material that enables thinner ceramic shapes. New washstands and washbasins have been created by Giovannoni, including basins with rounded forms in different sizes leading to the distinctive new Tuna washbasin whose long, organic form has been accentuated with a slim new profile. It is available in a countertop or built-in version, in a variety of finishes. Laufen / laufen.com

Scandinavian appliance brand ASKO has teamed up with architect and designer Maxim Kashin to create a striking abstract Suprematist-patterned limited edition laundry range. Suprematism – an artistic form developed by Russian artist Kasimir Malevich and based on the superiority of pure geometry and colour over established ideas about form and space – primarily utilises circles, lines and crosses.
