Pushing the Limit

Bathroom brand Crosswater has embraced a simple Japanese-style aesthetic with its new Limit range of bathroom furniture.

Our latest digest of people , places , and ideas

Japanese culture has been making its way into bathrooms and continues to be an emerging trend for 2024. Characterised by so silhoue es, curved features, muted tones and natural materials, wabi-sabi evokes a sense of calm and a soothing atmosphere and Crosswater’s new Limit bathroom furniture range embodies this philosophy.

In addition to the new Limit nishes – in Royal Walnut and Warm Stone – Crosswater is also launching ceramics, illuminated mirrors and radiators in the new colourways of Brushed Bronze and Slate. Crosswater / crosswater.co.uk

Low carbon the aim for wood-based bathroom range

Woodio is a collection of waterproof wood composite washroom products, designed and manufactured in Helsinki, Finland, and now available to specify from UK distributor Rena. Created with a mixture of wood chips and resin, Woodio offers a range of washbasins, baths and toilets, which the manufacturer says combine contemporary design aesthetics with strong eco credentials.

Initially created with a desire to disrupt the existing interiors market, Woodio was founded on the idea to offer a much more sustainably sound, carbon friendlier alternative to the ceramic products traditionally used in washroom schemes. After a successful period of trialling and testing, the first washbasins by Woodio were introduced to the Finnish market in 2016.

Terja Koskenoja, CEO at Woodio, said: “Wood is light, sustainable, and easy to create different colours with. Wood is also a well-known and much appreciated material to Finns, as we have a long history in the forest industry, utilising wood, and creating innovations out of it.”

Woodio’s production involves no heat, with each piece hand-moulded and then set at room temperature – removing the need for firing, and minimising carbon output in the process. The manufacturer says this means that the carbon footprint of the process is significantly lower than for traditional ceramic production.

Although designed for longevity, Woodio products can either be efficiently incinerated when they eventually do meet their end-of-life to generate energy through the release of biomass, or returned to Woodio’s factory in Finland for use in cement.

The range is available in a core collection of countertop basin in three colour options, as well as a made-to-order range including wall-hung, recessed, tap hole basins and additional countertop colour choices, as well as a bath and block wall-hung toilet.

The clients are a couple who own a period terraced home in South-East London that needed updating and extending to become their dream home. They have an eclectic style and wanted to renovate and extend their property so their home would become a larger, brighter and more contemporary space. Their original kitchen tucked away at the rear of the property, was cramped and outdated and led towards an ageing lean-to conservatory in the garden space.

The owners have a love of style and colour and expressed their passion for wood as a material which they had already explored as a key feature within the interior of their e tension. They also wanted the kitchen scheme to flow with their outdoor space so they could enjoy an indooroutdoor lifestyle in the warmer months, but since there would be so much glazing in the new extension space, the design had to blend both the garden space and the kitchen.

OVERCOMING THE CHALLENGES

The owners described the architectural features of the new extension space including a stained oak cladded ceiling, large feature skylights and framed feature box window for maximum

light and interest, so one challenge was to create a kitchen and utility scheme that had to blend and enhance these features.

Another challenge was that the utility cabinetry had to be easily accessible from the kitchen and contain their tall cleaning equipment, a washing machine and overflow household storage items, so had to be both functional and as aesthetically beautiful as the main kitchen cabinetry choice. Within this, I had to consider the location of the boiler as it had to be positioned somewhere so that it could be efficiently located but also hidden within the overall scheme layout.

Storage was important as they wanted to be able to keep the new kitchen space tidy and organised, and in particular asked for a dedicated larder cupboard so that they could fill it with dry goods, spices and baking ingredients. The new extension would allow them to entertain more, so they asked me to include an informal social hub area where they could sit casually with friends and family and also space for a circular dining table for evening meals and more formal occasions.

Their other wish-list item was an Italian-made luxury range cooker with two ovens and six powerful burners they wanted within the scheme, so we

MATERIAL BALANCE

“THE KITCHEN FURNITURE COMPLEMENTS THE EXTENSION SPACE AND HELPS CREATE A SEAMLESS FLOW BETWEEN THE NEW KITCHEN AND THE GARDEN”

needed to facilitate the size and best location of the oven model.

CREATIVE COLLABORATION

The owners had commissioned Red Squirrel Architects to design and build a modern L-shaped extension to their property’s rear that involved removing an existing conservatory and building a modern extension structure that maximised space and light.

y role was to design a kitchen and utility area that seamlessly integrated with the interior and architectural elements of their new space whilst considering the interior flow of the kitchen

utility cabinetry. It was important to include their wish-list appliances too, which included sourcing the largest wine fridge I could find as well as an Italianmade lu ury range cooker.

The owners had a great sense of interior style and wanted to ha e a statement kitchen with a carefully considered design that would reflect their taste and lifestyle. For example, early in the design discussions and from looking at some of their mood boards, the owners had said they wanted green cabinetry in the main kitchen space with brass and gold interior accents but were unsure of the right tone and finish.

I answered the client’s kitchen brief by creating a scheme that includes earthy, natural wood materials with dominant Eucalyptus green lacquered hester cabinetry from A s Belgra ia ollection to complement their new extension space and help to create a seamless flow between the new kitchen and the garden.

To reach this decision  I worked closely with the clients to explore their ideas and advise them on a shortlist of greentoned colours and finishes from PAD’s range of bespoke cabinetry along with suggested finish options that would complement the architectural features of their new extension as well as help bring their outdoor scheme inside. To add a touch of luxury, I added brass handles to the tall wall cupboards and an eye-catching brass tone behind the handleless base cabinetry.

Considering the social hub space in the layout, we included a central curved island that can

PAD 13
“IT WAS IMPORTANT TO INCLUDE THE CLIENTS’ WISH-LIST APPLIANCES, WHICH INCLUDED SOURCING THE LARGEST WINE FRIDGE I COULD FIND AS WELL AS AN ITALIAN-MADE LUXURY RANGE COOKER”

comfortably seat up to four people. The island was curved to add softness to the room but also so that friends and family could gather around and enjoy a bottle of wine or have a coffee together. The island design features a range of essential storage cabinets for crockery, wine glasses and cooking pans. An integrated Belfast-style sink and a brass boiling water tap were also added for ease of use when the owners were preparing food.

As the clients had a love of cooking and had their hearts set on an Italian-made ILVE large range cooker that was 90cm wide, I positioned this between the wall and base cabinetry to create symmetry

and an eye-catching feature. It was also positioned behind the island so the clients could easily prepare food on the worktops or island before using the oven. The strategic placement of the range cooker enhanced the functionality of the kitchen by optimising the ideal kitchen triangle layout allowing the owners to move easily between their key work areas to make meal preparation as efficient as possible.

SUBTLE PRACTICALITY

To answer the brief for a dedicated larder cabinet to keep the space tidy and organised, I added a PAD Pantry to the scheme which included drawers at the bottom, shelves above

and space for their small appliances. An integrated fridge freezer was positioned directly next to it to provide ultimate efficiency when the clients were unpacking shopping bags and at meal prep time.

I designed the functional, yet elegant utility area space by locating it in the L-shaped area before the entrance of the main kitchen. I matched the cabinetry to that of the main kitchen but finished it instead in a contrasting dark grey Graphite tone for elegance and definition. The utility cabinetry layout included a range of tall and base cabinets for their cleaning equipment, an integrated low-noise washing machine and plenty of overflow utility storage. The large wine fridge works best in the utility area so as not to the line of lacquered cabinetry in the main kitchen and is positioned on the L-shaped wall so the clients could have the largest wine fridge they could have dreamt of without it impacting the scheme in the main kitchen.

Black Magic

Dark tones and imaginative use of unusual room dimensions elevated a stunning bathroom design to the next level. Designer Gavin Farrington from Preston-based ROCCIA, explains some of the detail behind his award-winning project...

AN EYE FOR LUXURY: “The black and copper theme of the house provided a rich foundation for our design vision. We wanted to create a bathroom that seamlessly integrated with the rest of the property while exuding a sense of luxury and sophistication.”

KEY COMPONENTS: “To maximise the sustainable nature of the bathroom, we included the Davroc Matt Black electric towel bar, which not only adds to the overall aesthetic but also ensures energyefficient towel drying. The Barwick Wall drain without a frame and the Gessi Cono freestanding bath mixer in brushed brass continue the black and copper theme while incorporating sustainable design principles. The inclusion of the matt black freestanding bath became a focal point within the bathroom, epitomising both luxury and comfort.”

TILE STYLE: “We began by selecting the Palace Infibre Matt tiles for the walls and floors. The wall tiles and floor tiles exude elegance with their matte finish, perfectly capturing the desired aesthetic. These tiles not only provide a visually stunning backdrop but also offer durability, ensuring longevity and sustainability within the space.”

SHOWER SPEC: “For the bathroom fixtures, we made conscious choices to incorporate sustainable and watersaving elements. We selected the Gessi Cono hand shower set in brushed brass, which seamlessly integrated with the black and copper theme while emphasizing the sustainability aspect. The Gessi misting effect shower head, capable of saving 60 litres of water, became the focal point of the shower area.”

“BY SELECTING MATERIALS AND FIXTURES THAT ADHERE TO THE DESIRED AESTHETIC WHILE PRIORITISING SUSTAINABILITY, WE SUCCESSFULLY REALIZED THE CLIENT’S VISION”

Bringing his Italian roots to

interior schemes, Onestà Co-founder Daniele Bru o extolls the virtues of a ‘ uent in design’ ethos that puts the primary focus squarely on creativity ahead of sales

Detail
designerati.co.uk / interview 32
DANIELE BRUTTO 33

PLEASE TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR OWN BACKGROUND AND THE PATH THAT LED YOU TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY.

Daniele Bru o: I have always loved creating and making things from a young age, this passion followed me through my school years and led me to study product design at university. I have a natural connection with technical design so when an opportunity arose within the kitchen and furniture industry to start my own company it didn’t take long for me to choose this path.

The kitchen and interiors industry becomes more and more technical with every year that passes, and I love the challenge to stay on top of it. My goal is always to meld that technical knowhow with aesthetics, which, for me, is when you have created something truly unique.

HOW DID ONESTÀ COME ABOUT, AND WHAT ARE THE CORE AIMS AND PRINCIPLES OF THE BRAND?

DB: I co-founded Onestà in 2007 with an aim to bring the highest quality Italian kitchens and furniture to the UK market. It was originally experimental having never had experience of the sector before.

However, as the years passed, I realised I was slowly falling in love with the industry as it challenged me every day, at every level.

Over the years, we developed Onestà into a multi disciplined design studio, o ering more than just kitchens.

Acknowledging that each individual and space is unique, we now combine interior and product design disciplines to deliver unique, extraordinary ed furniture throughout the home, with an emphasis on detailed design and exquisite material choice from a wide range of Italian sources.

My Italian roots led me to our name –Onestà – meaning honesty, which perfectly embodies our core principle; an honest approach in everything we do. We also make sure we employ architectural spatial designers who have a real passion for design and not sales, this is how we know our ‘ uent in design’ ethos ows through the company and our designs.

HOW DO YOU TYPICALLY WORK WITH A CLIENT? DO YOU PREFER A HIGHLY DETAILED BRIEF AND COLLABORATIVE APPROACH OR TO BE LEFT TO COME UP WITH THE IDEAS?

DB: Every client is di erent and I enjoy the variety that brings to each project. Most designers prefer freedom of choice, but I like to work with clients more closely as we create unique spaces that are only achievable through a closer one-to-one process. I love creating solutions to problems and immersing myself into a client’s brief to deliver results.

Once we have a clear direction, I then really enjoy working with other professionals on the project. Architects, interior designers, lighting experts, builders all have great ideas

designerati.co.uk / interview 34

DANIELE BRUTTO 35

and di erent experiences to bring to the table and collaborate to create the perfect space and design. We have over the years had the pleasure to deal with some great professionals to bring a brief to life for the client.

YOU HIGHLIGHT ON YOUR WEBSITE THE IMPORTANCE OF ‘DETAILS’. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE KEY DETAILS THAT YOU ABSOLUTELY PRIORITISE IN YOUR PROJECTS?

DB: The interaction of materials is one key detail we spend huge amounts of time on. We like simplicity and subtlety in design, which means materiality interaction is high on our priority list. How a worktop edge, for example, intersects a breakfast bar table can make or break an island, so we work to the nth degree to get this right.

We also think in broader terms how volumes of furniture and colour work in every project. The balance of this detail is paramount for any successful space. For example, cabinetry height when compared to ceiling height and room width/depth is crucial for any piece of furniture to feel right in any given room. We obsess over this simple but very important detail.

“WE LIKE SIMPLICITY AND SUBTLETY IN DESIGN, WHICH MEANS MATERIALITY INTERACTION IS HIGH ON OUR PRIORITY LIST”

HOW HAVE CLIENTS’ REQUIREMENTS AND EXPECTATIONS CHANGED?

DB: Requirements have de nitely changed over the years, as clients are really starting to understand how a space can be transformed by a professional spatial designer. Clients now expect a much wider understanding of the entire space with up-to-date knowledge of details such as lighting, ooring etc. I feel that the level of appreciation for what a kitchen/spatial designer can achieve in a space grows with every year.

Many clients now understand and appreciate the vast amounts of product available to create the design they want, so they are happier to spend time really nailing down on a detailed brief to get it right with us. We spend a far greater amount of time at the beginning of projects ge ing these briefs right than we ever did 15 years ago. We aim to get that rst design right with only tweaking required further down the line, this can only be achieved with this invested time with the client.

WHAT DO YOU THINK WILL BE THE BIGGEST PRIORITIES FOR KITCHEN DESIGNERS GOING FORWARD?

DB: Flexibility will be a designer’s biggest priority in years to come. I think we need to be dynamic in our approach to new products, materials and technology. We need to be able to design for very speci c client requirements, which means to continue to experiment with new ideas and to push personal boundaries. Priorities should evolve around being experimental and always wanting to push the envelope. I think if a project scares you that’s a good thing and you need to embrace it.

Material technology will continue to shape the future of our industry. For example, we are currently experiencing a boom in the porcelain and ceramics industries, and as designers we need to help shape the future of design by immersing ourselves in these industries and understanding how these materials can be used, manipulated and utilised for the everyday home.

CDUK has revealed a waste-cu ing solution for surface materials that aims to take-back and repurpose

designerati.co.uk 38

Surface specialist CDUK has unveiled Vita Nova, a creative take-back and repurposing solution aimed at minimising the waste generated by the surface materials industry in the UK and Ireland. The solution – whose name translates as ‘new life’ – enables CDUK to revive surface materials and extend their useful life in new applications.

In the UK and Ireland alone, over 450 tonnes of solid surface materials nd their way into land ll sites annually. This encompasses waste material, o -cuts, end-of-life installations, damaged or faulty sheets, samples, and extraction dust. With Vita Nova, CDUK aims to tackle this continuous waste by encouraging the community of design, fabrication, and supply partners to act sustainably and return unwanted end-of-life surface materials.

Through Vita Nova, CDUK can breathe new life into a kitchen worktop by transforming it into a wash trough, convert a cladding installation into a reception desk, or repurpose material from a residential application for a retail se ing. Acting as a design partner throughout their speci cation journey, CDUK will then support designers in sourcing the nest products and materials to create sustainable and long-lasting designs, while o ering advice, technical knowledge and training courses to learn how to unlock their full potential.

The solution is already operational at the Vita Nova workshop in Leeds, where CDUK has been sorting, reclaiming, and repurposing returned surface material waste to create new high-quality products, part sheets or aggregates for the creation of new materials, all contributing to a circular economy. CDUK is able to take back all surface materials from its portfolio, which includes Corian Solid Surface, PaperStone, Polygood and Montelli Surfaces.

Andy Noble, Managing Director at CDUK, said: “Continuing on our journey to promote the next phase of sustainable solutions in the surface materials industry, Vita Nova allows us to divert waste materials from the land ll to our workshop and to give them a new life. For example, we have taken back large quantities of Corian Solid Surface; its properties make it an ideal surface material for repurposing, as it can easily be repaired, formed and reused for a new purpose.

“We strive to make it easier for our communities to repurpose surface materials, and we look forward to facilitating their own journey to sustainability acting as a trusted design partner. By working together, we will be able tackle waste in our industry while supporting our partners in achieving their sustainability goals.”

Vita Nova can support the a ainment of sustainable building certi cations, such as LEED, BREEAM, and WELL and is available in the UK and Ireland through CDUK.

CDUK revealed Vita Nova during the recent Surface Design Show in London where the company invited designers to return their surplus CDUK samples (either as good as new, damaged or discontinued colours) to the stand. In return, visitors were rewarded with a surprise gi courtesy of the stand’s eye-catching interactive ‘robot’ as they learned more about the new repurposing scheme.

PLEASE TELL US ABOUT YOUR CURRENT ROLE AND MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES.

In my day-to-day role as Design Director, I have the privilege of meeting new clients, conducting design meetings and creating detailed kitchen designs. No two days are the same, as every client and kitchen is di erent. From the initial meeting to the nal design, I love the process of ge ing to know each client’s wants and needs. Seeing the kitchen completed and in situ is always an incredibly rewarding moment too.

Alongside this, I support the senior team and work closely with our talented designers, helping to nurture their journey to success.

WHO OR WHAT HAVE BEEN YOUR BIGGEST CREATIVE INSPIRATIONS?

Since I can remember, Kelly Hoppen has been one of my biggest creative inspirations. Her taste and style of interiors are very similar to my own, from her love of a neutral colour scheme to her use of natural materials. I echo her design tips when it comes to designing a kitchen too; multifunctional is key. A er all a kitchen is the heart of the home. Like Kelly, I believe that

design should re ect your personality. Trends come and go, so I always suggest choosing colours and nishes that you truly love.

WHAT HAVE BEEN YOUR PROUDEST CAREER MOMENTS OR PROJECTS SO FAR?

This would be joining the senior team and becoming Design Director. It has meant a lot to me personally to be recognised and appreciated. I have worked in the industry for many years, learning and perfecting my cra . To be invited to be a company partner was a very proud moment.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE ANY YOUNG FEMALE DESIGNERS THINKING OF PURSUING A CAREER IN K&B DESIGN?

Gain as much knowledge as possible in your speci c area. When you know your cra inside out, the con dence will come. Remember to never give up! My journey hasn’t been smooth sailing, I’ve have had many failures along the way, but keep going, never quit on your dreams, no ma er what.

MOLLY CHANDLER, Willis & Stone

PLEASE TELL US ABOUT YOUR CURRENT ROLE AND MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES.

I’ve been working at Willis & Stone as a Kitchen & Furniture Designer for almost three years now since graduating from university. My main roles include meeting with potential clients, on-site and in our showroom, talking through layout and interior ideas, using SketchUp to create 3D designs to present to clients, pricing projects, and liaising with suppliers and trades to help each project run as smoothly as possible.

WHO OR WHAT HAVE BEEN YOUR BIGGEST CREATIVE INSPIRATIONS?

I’ve always had a love for kitchens; My dad runs a construction company, and I watched him complete many of our home projects when growing up. I think seeing spaces come together from

a young age sparked a love of home interiors and kitchen design.  For years now, I have followed a variety of inspiring home interior accounts on social media. Instagram is a great platform for interior inspiration, a couple of my favourites accounts are @jade. doutch and @tobyshome – they both create such warm and cosy spaces whilst keeping a traditional British feel, which I love. I feel passionate about my work and being able to design in-frame Shaker-style kitchens every day is exciting. Every project is di erent, and I enjoy the creative challenge.

I’ve always lived in the Cambridgeshire countryside, and I take inspiration from these natural surroundings too. Colours associated with nature, wooden accents, and old farmhouse brickwork o en have a big in uence on the projects I work on.p

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE ANY YOUNG FEMALE DESIGNERS THINKING OF PURSUING A CAREER IN K&B DESIGN?

Absolutely go for it. The kitchen is the heart of people’s homes and being able to create dream spaces for families whilst doing something you’re passionate about is such a rewarding feeling. When starting, it can be a scary thought to work on such big projects and to be asked for your opinion, but you just have to remember to be open-minded. As a designer, you naturally have a creative outlook, so when clients come to you for guidance as they can’t always visualise the potential, don’t be afraid to put your mark on the designs and create something that you love, as well as what the client wants. Your job is to inspire the client, so don’t hold back.

ABBIE HUNTER, Selan Design

PLEASE TELL US ABOUT YOUR CURRENT ROLE AND MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES.

My role as a designer has a lot of responsibilities that go above and beyond just interior design. I need to make sure my knowledge of the products and di erent brands we work with is always up to date and I am aware of any new products or changes.

I work directly with clients throughout the design process to nd the best design to suit their wants and needs in their new kitchen. I also deal with project managing consisting of liaising with all forms of trades to make sure the installation process runs smoothly, and that the client can relax as much as possible during the installation period. We always make sure to focus of a ercare, this includes making sure the clients are totally happy with their new space and organising any repairs or adjustments quickly and e ciently.

Another main responsibility of my job is making sure our social media presence is kept up-to-date and we are always on top of the newest innovations and designs within the design world.

WHO OR WHAT HAVE BEEN YOUR BIGGEST CREATIVE INSPIRATIONS?

I have a lot of creative in uences but mainly like to keep up to date with design through the use of social media and design magazines to keep an open mind, because design is such a personal thing in terms of people’s preferences, I make sure to look at lots of di erent design styles for inspiration.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR PROUDEST CAREER MOMENT SO FAR?

The proudest moment of my career so far has been to nominated and win New Designer of the Year 2022. This was a great experience and it was great to see the work that we do recognised on a national level.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE ANY YOUNG FEMALE DESIGNERS THINKING OF PURSUING A CAREER IN K&B DESIGN?

I would recommend anyone planning on pursuing a career in the design business to go for it, it is such an amazing opportunity to have such a creative job and be able to work directly with clients and use your design skills to help make peoples visions come to life.

ANN MARIE COUSINS, AMC Design

PLEASE TELL US ABOUT YOUR CURRENT ROLE AND MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES.

Since starting AMC Design 10 years ago, my role has changed. Having started as a sole trader, I did everything, from elding initial enquiries to the rst client meeting, creating concepts and then diving into the detail of the design. These days, I focus on creating value for our lovely clients by coordinating the e orts of my amazing team while working with trades to create schemes that are everything our clients imagined and more.

I love my role of marrying up our design vision to what the client needs and making sure the contractor has everything they need to ensure it is implemented exactly as designed. I love explaining how interior design transforms your home and therefore your life, and how investing in your home and your comfort is one which yields rich rewards.

WHAT HAVE BEEN YOUR PROUDEST CAREER MOMENTS OR PROJECTS SO FAR?

2023 was an incredible year for AMC Design. Not only did we complete a wonderful collection of projects, but we won our rst international award. We were lucky enough to scoop the overall category honours in the Best Residential Project Under £50k at the SBID International Design Awards, for our Owler Park project.

It was such an honour, and to be recognised amongst such a high calibre of entries was incredible. Something we as a team will never forget. What’s more, we were shortlisted in the Best Residential Interior Design Agency category of the Northern Design Awards, so it really was a year to remember.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE ANY YOUNG FEMALE DESIGNERS THINKING OF PURSUING A CAREER IN K&B DESIGN?

My journey as an interior designer has been a total privilege. I feel so lucky to be allowed into my clients’ homes and to get to know them, their lifestyles and their taste and to create a home which they never would have imagined, but which feels u erly right for them.

If you’re looking to explore a career in interior design, it is worth remembering that it is so much more than being creative and colourful. The element to my job that I didn’t anticipate was that a lot of interior design is about being superorganised; creating spec sheets and purchase orders and chasing deliveries. Ge ing to know my clients really well and managing the trades on their behalf is also extremely important, as the entire aim of an interior designer is to remove the hassle of a project. From the rst brainstorming session about what to do with the room, to making sure the trades turn up on time and carry out the work as planned – all elements are key.

This is where my former career as a litigator really comes into its own. I love to be both practical and creative, whilst at all times knowing that my client and their views have to come rst. You are, primarily, their consultant, leading them in the right direction to create the perfect home that will work for them and their family. It is a real privilege.

SOPHIE MILLS, Sophie Mills Studio

PLEASE TELL US ABOUT YOUR CURRENT ROLE AND MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES.

I run my own interior design practice, working mainly on residential projects. Having studied architectural interior design at Inchbald, I’ve always loved the architectural side the most – planning and reshaping the interior space. I nd myself designing a lot of kitchens. They are the centre of any home and are an ergonomic puzzle piece; it’s so satisfying to make a space work really well for a client and to include hidden and unexpected details developed over the years.

WHO OR WHAT HAVE BEEN YOUR BIGGEST CREATIVE INSPIRATIONS?

I have long loved minimalist architects such as John Pawson and Claudio Silvestrin. I’m also inspired by the energy of set-designer and artist Es Devlin’s work, and I am a keen follower of sculptors such as Antony Gormley and Rachael Whiteread. The body and meditating on the way we occupy space are central in their work, which has a direct relevance for interior design.

WHAT HAVE BEEN YOUR PROUDEST CAREER MOMENTS OR PROJECTS SO FAR?

I loved working on the warehouse kitchen for which I won the designeratiawards for Super Luxe Kitchen Design of the Year in 2021. I found the Italian limestone through a deep internet wormhole to track down the quarry, which introduced me to new stone suppliers, and it was the rst project I worked on with my now regular joiner, The Harris Cabinet Co. We spent a lot of time experimenting with the ner details, such as the width of the ba ens on the island, to make sure the aesthetics and the ergonomics complemented each other; for example the spacing for creating handles and for hiding the divisions of the drawers and cupboards had to work equally well.

There are other projects, such as designing a yoga studio and cafe, that I still go to on a regular basis – it has really a pleasure to design a space and get to continue to use it.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE ANY YOUNG FEMALE DESIGNERS THINKING OF PURSUING A CAREER IN K&B DESIGN? Think carefully about the minutiae and

observe how people occupy a space, especially kitchens. You need a detailed understanding of how the client lives to tailor it to meet their exact needs and idiosyncrasies – translating the daily reality of living and guring out ways to enhance it will really make a di erence to how your client experiences the space. When a space doesn’t work well, there’s a daily irritant of inconvenience. Designing something where the user hardly has to think about the space because it ows so well, is perhaps the best achievement.

HELEN BROWN, Ripples Chichester

PLEASE TELL US ABOUT YOUR CURRENT ROLE AND MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES.

I am the owner of Ripples Chichester. As a designer who spends much of my time frontof-house, my a ention is always focused on my customers. They are the reason I can continue designing beautiful bathrooms and why I enjoy coming to work. I’m very proud of my showroom, having designed it myself, and I love seeing our customers’ excitement when they see the variety of beautiful products available to them.

WHO OR WHAT HAVE BEEN YOUR BIGGEST CREATIVE INSPIRATIONS?

My career in design began 20 years ago. Back then, I was primarily in uenced by the various television shows that were aired at the time, each one being largely responsible for my desire to become an interior designer. Kelly Hoppen, in particular, has always been an inspiration, and I see a lot of her in my designs, which focus on calming neutrals and textures.

WHAT HAVE BEEN YOUR PROUDEST CAREER MOMENTS OR PROJECTS SO FAR?

I am extremely proud of how far I have come in the world of interior design, having opened my showroom and I’ve had many

memorable moments in my a er having worked on so many incredible projects. I began my Ripples journey in 2020, during the notorious lockdown, so the challenges I encountered were frequently greater than I anticipated. However, there was never a moment in which I questioned my decision. A personal highlight for me was receiving the BKU Award for Bathroom Showroom of the Year in 2022.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE ANY YOUNG FEMALE DESIGNERS THINKING OF PURSUING A CAREER IN K&B DESIGN?

It takes time to gain knowledge, but if you take your time and choose the right people and companies to work with, you could have endless opportunities to grow and become known in the industry. Never doubt your passion; it is a rewarding job, and your passion will elevate you forward in your career. My job is never a chore, and when it comes to creating beautiful spaces for people to enjoy, I o en feel like a kid in a candy store.

JULIE FLEMING, Palazzo Kitchens & Bathrooms

PLEASE TELL US ABOUT YOUR CURRENT ROLE AND MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES.

I have a really interesting role as a Kitchen Design Manager for Palazzo Kitchens and Bathrooms. We are a small, independent showroom, and due to this my role is extremely varied. I chat to clients in the showroom , go on the initial site visit, and work as part of the design team to come up with concepts for our clients kitchens. I present to the clients help them see what their design is going to achieve for them, and ultimately try to decipher the client’s needs and wishes, some clear, and some very vague, to turn that initial visit into a dream kitchen for them. I’m also involved in the ordering process and work with the installation team to ensure that, at the end of the day, our clients are completely happy.

WHO OR WHAT HAVE BEEN YOUR BIGGEST CREATIVE INSPIRATIONS?

I’ve had many fantastic mentors over the years, but right now it’s the team that I work with every day, and the clients that we work for. We’re a small female strong design team who have di erent ideas, and di erent tastes, but what’s great is that we all will sit and listen, consider and work together. It’s a fantastic creative environment to work in, and we are a close-knit team.

My clients are an amazing source of inspiration too. Every

one brings a di erent idea to the table, things they have seen, ways they live, experiences they’ve had. With each new client I gain a bit more insight into how people work, seeing things slightly di erently, and because of that I can ask the questions that really let me know them, and how we can help them achieve everything they want out of their space.

WHAT HAVE BEEN YOUR PROUDEST CAREER MOMENTS OR PROJECTS SO FAR?

When a client thanks me for suggesting that li le thing that they hadn’t thought of, or the colour combination they didn’t expect. Every kitchen is special and unique to the person buying it, and I try not to forget that. Its seeing a customer’s face light up when I show them what their space could look like, and then again when I see them in their new kitchen for that cup of

co ee, once the paint is dry and the cutlery has been brought back out of storage. That will never get old.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE ANY YOUNG FEMALE DESIGNERS THINKING OF PURSUING A CAREER IN K&B DESIGN?

Strive to be con dent, but also listen – to your peers, and your clients. I love to see young designers who bring new energy and concepts to a team, but also listen to those who have been working in the industry for years, who can give advice on how to make these amazing concepts reality. Ask the questions and look to nd solutions. Listen to your clients too – at the end of the day they’re the ones funding the designs, so if you are completely o the mark, it’s not going to leave the page.

There have been many creative inspirations over the years, but the most current ones are Francis Sultana, whom I worked with years ago in the capacity of making it happen, and

WHAT HAVE BEEN YOUR PROUDEST CAREER MOMENTS OR PROJECTS SO FAR?

This one is a toughie! I suppose one of my proudest career moments was opening our showroom in Chelsea, London. It was a major step forward for us, as well as a huge investment, but it really makes me happy walking into our colourful space every morning. It really re ects our design style and is a great way for design clients and retail customers to step into the world of Kelling and all that we do.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE ANY YOUNG FEMALE DESIGNERS THINKING OF PURSUING A CAREER IN INTERIOR DESIGN?

I think it’s really important to serve your time and serve it well. Learn as much as you can, don’t be afraid to ask questions and soak up the answers. To be successful, you have to work hard and put in long hours. O en, I nd myself trying to be like a swan, padding madly underneath the water but appearing graceful and elegant on the surface. It’s especially tough if you have a family and young children to be sel sh and determined about your business and career, so my advice is to make it a cornerstone of your relationship with your partner that you share the family responsibilities. And nally, I’d say make time for wellness – otherwise you will be making time for illness!

HANNAH BARDWELL, C.P. Hart

PLEASE TELL US ABOUT YOUR CURRENT ROLE AND MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES.

I am a luxury bathroom designer at C.P. Hart Bathrooms in London. My role di ers from day-to-day and allows me to give full expression to my creativity. A typical day in the life of a new project involves meeting the client and taking a detailed brief of their dream bathroom. Projects need to be functionally sound whilst meeting the clients design wishes, and I will explore all practical layout options in designing a scheme to suit their requirements. This will range from choosing basin styles, tiling layouts and even down to the grout colours. I display this via inspiration mood boards and 3D renders alongside CAD drawings for the client to visualise the space.

This allows me to have full creative control and ensures every design detail has been thought about thoroughly. It is a very ful lling process that allows me to

give free rein to my creative passion at the same time as ensuring the end product ows appropriately and works seamlessly.

WHO OR WHAT HAVE BEEN YOUR BIGGEST CREATIVE INSPIRATIONS?

Arguably, the client is the root of my creative inspiration. Once I understand what style and design they want to explore, I can then utilise my previous experience and inspirations to create a personalized design for their approval.

WHAT HAVE BEEN YOUR PROUDEST CAREER MOMENTS OR PROJECTS SO FAR?

To date, my proudest moments include becoming a nalist for the designeratiBathroom Designer of the Year award (under £15,000), a featured external article on the completed bathrooms of a gorgeous West London home, and photographing a case study project

for our own C.P. Hart residential inspirational projects. However, by far my favourite moments are when I get to revisit my clients’ homes and see the project I’ve designed, once completed. That is a moment you can’t beat.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE ANY YOUNG FEMALE DESIGNERS THINKING OF PURSUING A CAREER IN K&B DESIGN?

When I started my design career path, I came up with three adjectives to describe myself: con dent; creative; and energising. These have been my main driving force to strive to achieve every goal I set out. I would encourage all aspiring K&B designers to consider their own personal descriptors and how they can best use these to achieve their dreams.

Small in stature but big in ideas, this tiny house project explores how to maximise function in minimal spaces…

They say the best things come in small packages, and that’s certainly the principle behind the tiny houses project from German start-up Vagabundo. The three tiny houses o er between 15 and 34 sqm of living space. Founders Luca Knipp, Andreas Müllner and Michael Leitner had a vision to create living spaces that ful l basic needs without compromising on comfort or good design.

“The central idea – minimalist design – naturally has to run through all interior areas, including the kitchen,” explains Müllner, and it is for that reason that they decided to include BORA appliances within the space. The BORA S Pure and BORA X BO made it possible to do without a cooker hood to interfere with the views of nature through the large windows, and the integrated odour lter enables cooking without strong smells dominating the small internal dimensions of the home.

The modular houses are made to order and can be speci ed in various sizes and con gurations, including stacked to create a two-storey tiny house. BORA / bora.com
