Legal 2021 & 2022: Our MFDA General Counsel Michael Sharkey provided legal guidance for MFDA members. Mr. Sharkey serves as a resource to the association as well as our member funeral directors as a member benefit. Specifically, those firms who need mortuary law specific legal guidance, (often on short or even emergency notice) can spend up to 30 minutes getting answers they need. If a call will take more than 30 minutes of guidance, the member will be advised to retain Mr. Sharkey privately.

Legislative 2021: We continued representation of the funeral industry through our professional lobbyists, Cook Girard Associates. MFDA’s Lobbyist Joe Sellwood has built relationships

with many new legislators, furthered existing relationships, and policymakers are eager to assist MFDA with our needs at the capitol.

Mr. Sellwood continued to request greater clarity and guidance from the Department of Health.

In situations where new regulations were untenable, Cook Girard Associates quickly worked with MDH and the Governor’s Office to find solutions for funeral directors and the families they serve. Throughout the past two years, the MFDA Legislative Committee has been working on crafting changes to 149A. Planning a Service Through Sorrow and Joy We’ve about made it through 2021 and can looking forward to 2022. I know it’s been difficult for everyone, especially you, our members, who continue to be on the frontlines. Although still considered the “last responders, I know you cover the full spectrum and for that I say thank you.

This week I received a call letting me know that a good friend had died.

Something that I haven’t confronted personally for quite a long time. Death has not touched my circle of friends, acquaintances, relatives for the past few years and yes, that call set me back. I was here at work and thanks to both Miki and

Amy for understanding my shock and supporting my sadness.

and had shared experiences that we both endured and enjoyed laughing about.

Earlier today my friend’s partner called and through his tears asked if I would plan the funeral service via Zoom and I said yes. (I know I should have completed Glenda’s Celebrant training!)

During this process I was also reminded that she was a member of the Red Hat Society and boy did they have fun! It made me laugh and again, I found joy in the sadness.

As I worked through my sorrow in the planning, I found joy in the process.

Going through my friend’s Facebook page gave me a greater insight into her faith, joy, politics, music, and an opinion on just about everything.

So that is my lesson for today, tears and laughter are emotions that we all share and remain open to as life goes on.

She was a strong-willed woman, and one I had known for the past 48 years. We both lived in NY in the early to mid-70’s

President’s Message

I am grateful for your service to others.

December is well underway and the first snow is flying. Hard to believe the end of the year is upon us! Looking back, I know a lot of us looked forward to 2021 as being the beginning of a better year after what 2020 dealt us. Well, 2021 was better but still not back to normal, or whatever we all consider normal to be. I think we are all hoping for a better 2022, I know I am! I was relieved that 2021 allowed us to come together at our convention and get reacquainted with each other and forge new friendships as well. I was

also fortunate to be able to attend NFDA convention in Nashville, which was an amazing experience, in a very exciting and lively city. I always enjoy meeting with directors from all over the country, being around like-minded people that share the same passion that we all possess.

As we close out another year in funeral service, please know I hold the utmost respect for each and everyone of you serving families daily. We all know this time of the year is not only hard on

the families that are experiencing loss around the holidays, but difficult for our own families as they continue to support our efforts to take care of others while sacrificing our own time with our loved ones.

On a personal note, I want to say thank you to the funeral directors and active retirees that have continued to step up and tirelessly serve the families in Minnesota through these past two difficult years. I am grateful for your service to others.

Legislative Update

A special session remains unlikely given the current impasse between Governor Tim Walz and legislative leaders. Recently, the Governor and legislative leaders failed to agree on whether to hold a special session before Thanksgiving, and the closer we get to the 2022 regular session the more unlikely a special session becomes. At issue is how to allocate $250 million to frontline workers, implement COVID-related waivers, and allocate drought relief.

Looking to 2022, the Minnesota legislature will have a healthy budget to work with. As of early December, the state is projecting a $7.746 billion surplus – much higher than expected in the February 2021 economic forecast. Additionally, Minnesota is expected to receive $6.8 billion (mostly going to roads and bridges) from the recently enacted federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, according to a White House Memo for Minnesota. The bottom line is Minnesota will have significant funds available in crafting the supplemental budget and policy proposals during the 2022 session.

Throughout the past two years, the MFDA Legislative Committee has been working on crafting changes to 149A. Working closely with Dr. Michael LuBrant and the University of Minnesota, the Legislative Committee provided input on the recent survey of the mortuary science profession in Minnesota.

The MN Funeral Directors Association is fortunate to have a strong relationship with Dr. LuBrant - his resources, time and expertise provide a great benefit to informing the course forward. A survey of this caliber is not standard practice among

professional associations. Additionally, the volunteers on the Legislative Committee have put significant time into the entire 149A rewrite project (and the many other issues that come up) and serve the profession well with their diverse opinions on the issues.

The Legislative Committee continues to evaluate, gather input, and refine different proposals on: relaxing the reciprocity requirements for licensure; changes to the internship including allowing interns to register during their education as well as allowing additional preceptors and locations for interns to learn from; an internship/apprenticeship program to permit individuals to get a hands on preview of funeral service prior to committing to a mortuary science program; certification requirements for cremator operators; numerous other administrative updates; and a possible program to register removal specialists (non-licensed) with required training and additional requirements on employment. Of course, input is welcomed on any of these proposals and nothing is set in stone at this point.

The 2022 session which begins on January 31st, will pose challenges right out of the gate. The House has announced they will be remote for the 2022 session, while the Senate, with no official announcement yet, will likely be meeting in person. MFDA is well positioned to pursue changes to 149A, and defend its positions with the strong survey data and the expertise of the members.

MFDA’s Online Community keeps members connected.

Meeting Involvement 2021 & 2022: Our MFDA staff and board members participated in meetings with the Minnesota Department of Health Mortuary Science staff to communicate questions/issues as needed.

Communications 2021 & 2022: MFDA shared urgent and important communications with our MFDA members through our Online Community. We provided up-to-date information regarding all of Governor Walz’s Executive Orders affecting funeral

service, as well as information about continuing education opportunities and important news for funeral service.

Members were able to engage in conversations to share best practices.

We published and mailed quarterly Bulletin newsletters to our MFDA members and industry resources.

Education 2021: MFDA provided continuing education opportunities both in-person and virtually. From virtual events with Dr. Alan Wolfelt on self-care for funeral directors, preneed insurance course (for both insurance and funeral director CEUs!), annual OSHA Training, and MFDA District Meeting, to our “Live & In-Person” 130th Annual Convention at Breezy Point Resort, we provided CEU events for all convenience levels.

2021 MFDA Convention

2022: MFDA will continue to offer inperson, hybrid, and virtual continuing education events throughout the year. MFDA will host its 131st Annual Convention at Treasure Island Resort & Casino in Red Wing on May 24-26 with a full exhibit hall, keynote speakers, breakout sessions, and an exciting party! District Meetings will return to in-person throughout the state. Our preneed insurance course will be offered as a hybrid event. Additional virtual CEU opportunities will be offered throughout the year, including member discounted prices for virtual CEUs through WebCE.

MFDA will again attend the Minnesota School Counselors Conference to promote mortuary science as a career option for students.

MFDA’s Career Center 2021 & 2022: MFDA’s Career Center provides options for both employers and job seekers to use with a 50% discount for MFDA members. Monthly emails and social media posts promote job postings.

Public Relations NEW in 2022: MFDA will be creating a public relations campaign promoting the value of a funeral and working with our MFDA members. The campaign will be promoted on our website and social media accounts with images and short videos available for member funeral homes to use on their website and social media. There will be a search function for consumers to find MFDA members for their preneed and at-need services.

Workforce Development 2021 & 2022: Continue to address workforce challenges through ongoing discussions with advisory committees.

Partnerships 2021 & 2022: MFDA’s continued partnerships with our endorsed preneed insurance provider Funeral Directors Life, endorsed commercial insurance provider Federated Insurance, and support of the Children’s Grief Connection. Through the endorsement of Funeral Directors Life, the MFDA receives revenue based off the total dollars produced in our state from preneed insurance policies written. This revenue largely supports our budget and benefits provided to our members.

Your hometown funeral director is the best person to answer this questions because it often depends on whether the cemetery selected requires the use of a vault.

Viewing the remains and ceremony are important having a funeral . These traditions help loved ones accept the reality of death, especially in circumstances when death occurs away from home. “Closure” is the term often used describe this important to emotional event.

U of M Mortuary Science Update

A Busy Fall for U of M Mortuary Science Dept.

Dear Colleagues, On behalf of all of us here in mortuary science at the University of Minnesota, we send to you our warmest wishes for a wonderful holiday season! It’s been a very busy fall for us and I am excited to share with you news of recent happenings this past semester.

Return to Campus We were thrilled to welcome back our students to campus this fall for their lecture courses. As you may be aware, students had to move to remote learning back in spring of 2020 as a result of COVID. Whereas we were able to maintain on-campus labs and funeral home-based clinical experiences over the past year and a half, all lecture work was delivered remotely, via Zoom. It’s

een wonderful having students back on campus once again for all their courses.

Research into Licensure Policy Issues In collaboration with the MFDA Legislative Committee (of which I am a member), I began a research project in November to gather feedback from funeral service professionals about a number of policy issues related to the practice of mortuary science in Minnesota. As part of my research, I created a policy issue survey with input from MFDA Legislative Committee members. The survey was sent electronically, via email, to nearly 1,500 funeral service professionals. Over 400 people completed the survey, which is an excellent response rate! I am currently

working on analyzing the data, and I will be hosting a webinar soon in which the results are presented to the public. If you participated in this research, thank you very much! I know MFDA will be working hard to use the data to advance mortuary science in Minnesota for the benefit of all funeral directors and the families we serve.

Networking Events In November we hosted our annual autumn on-campus networking event, which drew funeral service and allied professionals from across Minnesota and neighboring states. We hosted the event in our program classrooms, and over the course of half a day, both current students and alumni had a chance to meet one another and make connections with funeral directors and allied colleagues that will help them as they move forward in their professional endeavors. Please be advised that we are planning to host another networking event, to be held virtually via Zoom, in early 2022 so that folks who could not make it to campus in November will have the opportunity to meet one another remotely. More information will be emailed out to folks soon. Likewise, information about the event will also be posted on the Program’s website.

Outreach Activities We continue to engage in outreach activities to prospective students, both on campus, as well as at local high schools and other career exploration events. In late November, Miki Tufto, two program students, and I gave a presentation at Hopkins High School to a health science career explorations class. The students there had really great questions for us, and we were able to promote the profession of funeral service to them.

Please reach out to me with any questions you may have about presenting to your local high school students. It’s incredibly important that we work together to share with high school students information about a career in funeral service. When we speak with students at these events, we find that many have never attended a funeral, and most do not know what mortuary science is. It’s so important that we work together to provide information to students about funeral service as they work to discern their career paths - especially while they are still in high school and actively exploring options for a college major.

New Instructors We are pleased to announce the addition of two new adjunct teaching specialists to our faculty. Dr. Denise Gochenouer will be teaching coursework in marketing and management, and Kendell Poch will be teaching accounting and finance related to funeral home business operations.

Gochenouer Dr. Gochenouer is an Associate Professor of Marketing and MBA Director at Southwest State University (Marshall, MN) with demonstrated experience in higher education, research and the banking industry. Skilled in Brand Name development and Identity, Market Research, Segmentation, Consumption and Cultural Research, Advertising, Experiential Learning and Management.

Poch She earned her PhD in Sociology (Demography & Social Organization) from South Dakota State University, and also holds both a Masters in Management and a Bachelor’s degree in Marketing.

Kendell Poch is a Senior Lecturer at the Carlson School of Management, and previously served in various roles within the consulting industry, most recently in public accounting at KPMG. She received both her MBA and MBT from the Carlson School. Kendell shifted to a full-time faculty role in 2017 teaching undergraduate, MBA, and executive education courses at the Carlson School, and she also serves as the undergraduate coordinator for the accounting department.

Kendell was a recipient of the outstanding teaching award in 2019, the undergraduate faculty of the year award in 2020, and the part-time and online MBA faculty of the year awards in 2021.

LifeSource Update Throughout this past year, Melinda and I have collaborated with funeral director partners in our region, industry leaders, embalmers, and donor agencies across the United States to gain further knowledge, and how we can better serve our funeral director partners. We also have had several opportunities in which to participate and present at educational events regarding the care of donors after the gifts of organ, tissue, and/or eye donation has been completed.

The first opportunity was in March for a national based online seminar for the American Association of Tissue Banks. This presentation was for those who work in the field of donation. The occasion allowed us to discuss the importance of collaborating with funeral director partners through the recovery process, what recovery agencies can do to improve communication practices with those in funeral service, embalming techniques and products, reconstruction of the donor, and beyond; all while honoring the family’s decision. Through this seminar, we had the possibility of highlighting the work of our funeral service partners and the challenges that recovery may add to their work. This seminar sparked important dialogue between many recovery agencies and their funeral home partners; how to work together to better meet their funeral director’s needs. Sharing the perspective from funeral directors was important for us to highlight in this forum. From this presentation another educational opportunity arose.

Melinda and I were invited to partner with the Wisconsin Lions Eye Bank, NFDA, ATSF (a tissue recovery agency, whom you may know as they work out of HCME), and Versiti (the Wisconsin organ recovery agency). This was an intensive day of education with funeral directors licensed in Wisconsin, a couple Minnesota licensees who hold dual licenses were present as well. This event featured in person demonstrations of techniques related to embalming and reconstruction following donation.

education with our partners.

We then participated in a NFDA hosted seminar at the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science on the care of donors. We were able to connect with funeral service colleagues who practice across the country to discuss recovery agencies, and what they like and do not like about those organizations. We spoke with industry professionals to gain further insight to techniques, and products to utilize, a few of which, we had not known previously. We wanted to gain this further knowledge to assist our partners to the best of our abilities.

Q: Is a termination letter required?

We had a new hire who worked in our medical office for less than 6 weeks.

The doctors decided she was not able to provide the level of care or service needed. She was not prepared to give information about a patient when entering a room, didn’t seem to be able to engage and connect with the patients or staff, or understand our processes very well. Based on these factors we decided she was not a good fit for the office. She started on July 24th and we terminated her employment on August 31. She does not have a contract with our office. She sent a text that said: “I would like to request a formal letter of termination which outlines the infractions I committed, as well as any means of remediation that were offered that lead to my termination for my records.” Are we required to provide her any type of letter?

A:

When an employment relationship is at will, then generally either party is free to terminate said relationship at any time, for any reason (the employer’s reason of course must be a lawful one), and with or without notice to the other party. There is no federal employment law that requires an employer to provide a “formal letter of termination” of any kind, let alone one that “outlines the infractions ... committed, as well as any means of remediation that were offered that lead to [the] termination” of employment.

While some states do have statutory requirements to provide separating employees with notice of termination or similar, we are not aware that this is the case in your particular state.

If company policy, past practice, or a contract support providing a letter of

termination to the effect requested by the former employee (or to any other), the employer would do well not to deviate from such precedent. If, however, the employer’s policy and practice do not support providing a termination letter and there is no precedent in this regard, we are not aware that the employer must honor the former employee’s request here (if it does so now, this will set a precedent). Still, keep in mind that a request of this nature may signal a forthcoming claim from the separated employee, so the employer may want to put its insurance carrier on notice of this possibility (it may in fact be required to do so – you will want to check your policy or consult with your broker/carrier for specific information as to your obligations in this scenario, if any, to preserve coverage rights).

LifeSource in the News On Saturday, November 6, the Rochester Post Bulletin published a story on organ donation in Minnesota. Book Review: “It’s Your Funeral! Plan the Celebration of a Lifetime – Before It’s Too Late”

So, because you have no choice in this matter, you might as well make your final farewell as personal as possible.

Most people who’ve gone before you have had ground burials, but today’s decedents have choices, says Benjamin.

Ground burials are not the most earthfriendly actions you can take and, most surprisingly, neither is cremation – although, if you decide on cremation, there “creative” things that can be done with your dead self.

How do you say “goodbye”?

How can you let go, knowing that it’s the last time, the last moment, that the laughs you shared, the meals, the trips are over?

How do you take your leave, and leave behind nothing but good memories?

You read “It’s Your Funeral!” by Kathy Benjamin, that’s how, and you go with a nudge, a wink, and some awesome tunes.

You’ll never get out of this world alive.

Kathy Benjamin thinks we all need to remember that. She’s going to die, you’re going to die, everyone in the past who ever drew a breath has died, full stop.

You might be gone, but you won’t be forgotten...

IN MEMORIAM Robert W. Mathews, son of University of Minnesota Program of Mortuary Science Professor Michael Mathews, age 52, of Noblesville, passed away on Wednesday, June 23, 2021, at Riverview Health in Noblesville. He was born on August 16, 1968, in Grand Island, Nebraska.

Rob grew up in Mounds View, MN, where he met his wife, Jenni. He worked as an aircraft dispatcher. Rob enjoyed watching hockey, especially the Indiana Fuel, watching football, especially the Minnesota Vikings, and going fishing and camping. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family.

Rob is survived by his wife of 26 years, Jenni Mathews; mother, Elizabeth (Wheatley) Eckert; father, Michael Mathews; son, Colton Mathews; and grandson, Parker Mathews.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Scott Mathews.

Services were held Sunday, July 11, 2021, at Bethel Lutheran Church in Noblesville.

Condolences: www.randallroberts.com Delores “Dee”, Mary Arnold, mother of Minnesota Funeral Director Mark Arnold, age 87 of Bloomington, Minnesota. Born August 26, 1933 and died July 6, 2021.

A woman of noble character, shaped by humbleness, determined through convictions, and her value found in her family. Born and raised in Columbus, Ohio to Carmen and Mary Lombardi, she was the youngest, “the baby”, in the Lombardi family. Her Italian heritage afforded her rich memories through her childhood and built the foundation of her love for authentic Italian cooking and baking, entertaining, gardening, 22 MFDA Bulletin • FALL 2021

and creating art. Her friendly nature and attraction to shyness led her to a man who caught her discerning eye, Dean Arnold. The spark ignited and the eventual flame drew them together and shortly to marry on November 24, 1951. Through the following years they grew a family with three children, Dean, Cheryl, and then later they had Mark.

Minneapolis became the city where they would settle and build strong family roots.

Family was her pride, nurturing and encouraging the importance of love, traditions, and faith. Her love of God enveloped her life, a source of affirmation and often inspired her to share her convictions and testimony with acquaintances and friends. A true godly warrior.

Her dedication to marriage blessed her with 70 beautiful years with her “teenage crush”, Dean Arnold who she is now reunited with and wrapped in his loving arms. She will be deeply missed by her children that were the twinkle in her eye, Dean Arnold (Nora), Cheryl (Arnold) Rue (Wade), and Mark; her grandchildren that were her joy, Laura Montiel (Lorenzo), Dean R. (Courtney), Melody and Nolan Arnold; Kymberli (Rue) Kuehn (Dan), Jennifer (Alex), Deanna, and Angela Aldrich (Joshua); Elizabeth Morris (Joe), Hilary, and Olivia; her great grandchildren that were her spark of youth, Tristan, Ava, Adelyn, Dean; Samantha (Luke), Sophia, Caleb, Michael, Gabriel, Jayden; Nicholas and Teddy, and her big sister that was her partner in crime, Angeline Bigler.

Preceded in death by grandson, Jeffery Arnold Rue. A world of gratitude to Fairview Accent Hospice, and the Grace A Home Team who gave her dignified and compassionate care during her going home journey.

A celebration of her life and faith was held July 13, 2021, at the Lakewood Chapel in Minneapolis. Visitation was held July 12 at the David Lee Chapel in Wayzata. Interment Lakewood Cemetery.

Richard “Pat” Collins, Minnesota Funeral Director, passed away Sunday morning, July 11, 2021, at Altru Hospital, Grand Forks, North Dakota.

Pat was born March 23, 1946, in Thief River Falls, MN to Charles and Bernadine (Reinke) Collins. He was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Middle River, MN. He attended Middle River School graduating in 1964 and then attended The University of North Dakota, “fighting Sioux”, and the University of Minnesota in St. Paul, MN, “Golden Gophers”, graduating with a degree in Mortuary Science in 1967, following in his father’s footsteps. On June 24, 1967, he was united in marriage to Jeanne Nelson at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, of Greenbush, MN. The couple immediately moved into a house in Karlstad that was connected to the recently purchased Kloempken Funeral Home and they started a 24-hr. ambulance service at the same location. He also became a PRIM– Professional Rescue Instructor for Minnesota, and he along with several teams, trained numerous ambulance squads throughout the state. In August of 1972, Pat organized “Karlstad Rescue Squad” and continued operating ambulance service until 1975 when the service was turned over to the newly organized Tri County EMS District, which he was also instrumental in organizing.

Pat was an “Adrenalin junky” and loved his 39 years as a member of Karlstad Fire Department as well as his years in ambulance. And of course, that held true for his love of motorcycles and the ride.

He loved hunting and spending time at the ‘hunting shack’ with his kids and friends, the fishing trips with his grandpa as a boy, and most of all… just sitting around and telling stories. Shawn told him that everyone should only be allowed so many words a day, and he’d have his used up by noon. His interest in radios and electronics led him into HAM radio and had been licensed around 45 years and has spent countless hours unwinding and chatting around the world, including the space shuttle Columbia in orbit.

Pat was a member of Middle River American Legion Riders and Sons of the American Legion, and Minnesota and North Dakota Patriot Guard; past member of the Karlstad Fire Department, and Karlstad Rescue Squad.

He is survived by his loving wife, Jeanne of 54 years; Sons: Shawn (Leanna), Karlstad, MN; Steve, Greenbush, MN; and daughter Melissa (Jeff) Carlson of Champlin, MN; Grandsons Brennan & Liam Collins, Nicklaus & Luke Carlson and Carl Sandahl; Brother-in-law Verne Nelson (Karen), Strathcona, MN; Sistersin-law Lenay (Jerry) Van Horn, Superior, Wi & Adell Miller, Greenbush, MN and several cousins, nephews & nieces and other relatives.

Pat was preceded in death by his parents, Sister-in-law & Brother-in-law, Leona & Norman Good, Brother in law, Walter Miller and nephew Paul Miller.

Mass of Christian Burial was held Thursday, July 15, 2021, at St. Edward’s Catholic Church in Karlstad with Fr. George Noel and Deacon Dan James presiding. Pat’s family would like to acknowledge the Karlstad Fire Department, Tri-County EMS, American Legion Riders, Patriot Guard Riders and all of his extremely vast number of HAM Radio buddies as his Honorary Bearers.

David Schwietz, Sr., former mortuary science director of the Minnesota Department of Health, loving Father and Grandfather, died July 15. Preceded in death by wife Shirley, parents & nine siblings. Janeen TeBeest, mother of MN Funeral Director Kevin TeBeest and grandmother of MFDA Board Member Kyle TeBeest, of Montevideo, passed away Wednesday, September 15, 2021, at Luther Haven Nursing Home in Montevideo at the age of 79.

Janeen Joy (Obermeyer) TeBeest was born on November 18, 1941 in Aberdeen, SD. The daughter of Otto and Ruth (Moberg) Obermeyer. She went to country school for some of her elementary education and then to Westport, SD Public schools where she graduated in 1959. She enjoyed having her mother as a teacher. Janeen received a teaching certificate in elementary education from Northern State University in Aberdeen, SD. While attending Northern State University, she met Darwin Russell TeBeest and they were married on June 6, 1962 in Aberdeen SD. To this union of 59 years, four children were born: Kevin, Sharon, Jonathon, and Allison. She started her elementary teaching career in Rock Rapids, IA in 1961. After marriage, she taught in Maynard, MN for one year.

When Kevin was born, Janeen became a stay at home mom. From 1973 to 1977 she was employed by the Montevideo School District as a kitchen staff member.

Janeen loved music. There was always music playing in the house. She enjoyed going to concerts with family. Her favorite was Daniel O’Donnell. She was able to see him perform live over 65 times and she was known by him on a first name basis. She also enjoyed time with her bridge club, going to track meets with Darwin, and attending her grandchildren’s activities. Janeen was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Montevideo for over 59 years where she taught Sunday School for many years.

She also was a member of the Mary Circle and Altar Guild.

Most people will know and remember her as Grandma Jan as she was an in-home daycare provider to hundreds of children for over 40 years. Even after the children

Alvin “Al” G. Nasinec, father of Nathan (Susan) Nasinec the owners of Bruss-Heitner Funeral Home in Wells, age 86, of Montgomery, MN, died in the early morning hour, Tuesday, September 21, 2021, at Traditions in Montgomery.

Alvin George was born July 7, 1935, the oldest of three children born to George and Bessie (Havel) Nasinec. He attended School District #60 for the first three grades before attending St. Raphael Catholic School to grade eight.

He attended Montgomery High School, graduating in 1953. Alvin enlisted in the U. S. Army Reserves in 1958. As a recruit, he qualified as outstanding on the rifle range, earning him the sharpshooter medal. Al also attended mechanic school for wheel vehicles maintenance at Fort Chaffee in Arkansas. There, he

spent time repairing and repainting vehicles, and receiving a military driver’s license, after which he drove troops to the field and equipment for engineers.

Al was on active duty at the start of the Vietnam conflict and achieved the rank of Specialist Fifth Class. Al’s return from active duty brought him to the 353rd Transportation Company in Faribault and the family farm northwest of the Bohemian National Cemetery. He was a dairy farmer and proud of it. During this time, he also picked corn for the Green Giant Canning Company.

Alvin married Mary Ann Tupy on June 6, 1956, at Most Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, and the couple had three children, Wylene, Charlene and Nathan. The couple enjoyed traveling and Al enjoyed his reunions with his military buddies. Al has been a lifelong parishioner of Most Holy Redeemer Catholic Church and has been a member of the American Legion Post #39 for more than 20 years. He was a life member of the Knights of Columbus, a founding member of Le Sueur County Pioneer Power Association. He and his wife spent over 20 years as 4-H adult leaders. Alvin enjoyed his 37 years on the Montgomery Township Board.

John was born March 20, 1960 in Stillwater, MN. He was a 1978 graduate of Stillwater High School. He moved to International Falls shortly after graduating from the University of Minnesota Department of Mortuary Science in 1983.

He was united in marriage to the former Melanie Bahr on December 7, 1991.

John was a dedicated mortician and enjoyed serving the many families he grew to know over the years in International Falls. John also enjoyed woodworking, collecting, being outdoors, and truly enjoyed spending time with his family.

Duane Benson, age 82 of Northfield, passed away with his family by his side on Wednesday, December 1, 2021, at Abbott-Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis following the sudden onset of pulmonary fibrosis.

Alton Duane Benson was born July 21, 1939, in Grand Forks, North Dakota, to Arthur and Emma (Grefsheim) Benson.

He grew up on the family farm in Hatton, North Dakota, raising cows, pigs, chickens, and grain. As the only brother of three older sisters, he got his way a lot.

He attended Garland No. 1 rural school through the 8th grade, then Hatton High School, graduating in 1957. He joined the U.S. Army and served for two years, including 18 months in Germany as a radioteletype operator, using Morse Code. He was lucky enough to serve with four men from North Dakota that he already knew. They traveled all over Europe, including Norway, Sweden, Denmark, France, Switzerland, and Austria.

After returning to North Dakota, Duane attended North Dakota State University in Fargo. Unsure of a career direction, he took an aptitude test that indicated he would be well suited to “funeral services.” He worked as a night attendant in a Fargo funeral home for a year while attending NDSU, then transferred to the U of M School of Mortuary Science, from which he graduated in 1964. Duane was introduced to Marie Wolff by a mutual friend at a birthday party in 1963. The couple were married on May 22, 1965, in Robbinsdale, by Marie’s father, a pastor.

Duane first worked at the Albin Funeral Home in Minneapolis, then moved to Northfield where he purchased the Zanmiller Funeral Home in 1966. Five years later, he purchased the Anderson Funeral Home, also in Northfield, and consolidated operations in one location on Fourth Street.

Duane was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, Jaycees, Rotary, the Northfield Golf Club, the MFDA and NFDA, and St. John’s Lutheran Church, where he served on several boards and ushered on Sunday mornings for more than 50 years. He enjoyed going for coffee in the mornings with longtime friends. In 2001, Duane sold the funeral home to Andy Langehough, and continued to work part-time, in between traveling with Marie, relaxing on the North Shore at Lutsen, and rounds of golf. In 2015, he was honored for 50 years as a licensed funeral director, a ceremony he missed in order to attend his granddaughter’s high school graduation, a decision he never regretted. Most of all, Duane enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Marie; his children, Mark (Sherry) of Northfield, Sarah (Philip) Wilkinson of Laurinburg, NC; four grandchildren, Gunnar and Thea Benson, Emma Marie and Grace Ann Wilkinson; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by an infant son; three sisters Arlene, Ione and Dorothy; and his parents.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, December 7, 2021, at St. John’s Lutheran Church. Visitation was held Monday, December 6, 2021, at the Benson & Langehough Funeral Home and at church one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at Oaklawn Cemetery, Northfield.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
