The 2015 category for the Power Yacht Interior Design award was packed with eyecatching constructions and many examples of creative excellence. The winner of this year’s award was Luxury Project’s M/Y Yolo; the brilliance of which won much admiration and praise from all corners of the yacht building and design industry. Built by Cantiere delle Marche, the 86foot motor yacht was designed by Mario Pedol and Massimo Gino of Nauta Yacht Design. Luxury Projects coordinated the design and implementation of the internal space. The combination of two of the industry’s premier design teams working together always promised something special but the end result surpassed every expectation. M/Y YOLO combines durable substance, seaworthy performance and low fuel consumption with airy, contemporary design, wide exterior space and vast internal volumes, used to expert effect. Luxury Projects became involved with M/Y Yolo at the request of the yacht’s young owner. With their appointment they were given an immense amount of trust and sizeable creative control. This arrangement allowed the company’s team of designers the enviable opportunity to express their creativity and utilise new ideas and inspirations throughout the design process, with stunning results. M/Y YOLO combines durable substance, seaworthy performance and low fuel consumption with airy, contemporary design, wide exterior space and surprising volumes. The Architecture and Design aspects of M/Y Yolo were the central focus for the team from the outset. Customisation and bespoke design were two key aspects of the original concept; M/Y Yolo had to be unique and entirely incomparable. Chief designer Mario Pedol of Nauta Yachts explained the inspiration behind the concept and ideas which informed the building process, “We feel that the unique aspect of life aboard a yacht lies in the opportunity it gives you to immerse yourself totally in the natural environment around you. When we sat down to design the CdM Nauta Air we always kept one priority in mind: that of bringing the outside world “in”. To do this we used wide areas of glass and created architectural spaces where the indoors could communicate in harmony with the outdoors. By thinking of the yacht as one continuous space we created a new concept of on board living, especially on the main and upper decks. CdM Nauta Air yachts are motor yachts that stand out thanks to their autonomy, their on board safety and their ample living spaces. All this while retaining a solid, robust, seaworthy core that inspires confidence.” The level of detail within the design was informed by each designer’s own inspirations and experiences whilst continually

consulting with the owner about his needs and desires for his power yacht. As a result, a different style and atmosphere was conceptualised for each individual aspect, from the aft salon, forward dining and gallery areas through to the four cabins. The Luxury Projects team almost “re-invented” the existing furniture functions and spaces from their standard layout in order to maximise their full potential. This lead to the creation of an industry standard on board-SPA and forward cabin being fully renovated to obtain VIP status. M/Y Yolo also benefited from the installation of a fully-customised lighting system which literally illuminated every feature of the yacht’s interior beauty. Using state-of the art LEDs, which avoided the need for imposing grids of ceiling spots, the light could be manipulated in such a way as to infuse various temperatures of white light to facilitate the desired ambiance onboard. Additionally, the inclusion of a tailor made, state of the art entertainment system was installed to allow the owner maximum opportunity to utilise M/Y Yolo for a plethora of social engagements. In association with the LED lighting system, the independent Owner Area, was constructed so as to exploit full beams of rich natural light both sides to capitalise upon her incredible spaces and dimensions. Glass doors were constructed to divide the bedroom of the cabin from the cleansing area which benefited from wide shower and full-scale travertine custom-designed tiles in soothing, clean tones. The mesmerising GYMSPA area was something of the jewel in M/Y Yolo’s substantial crown. The professional gym is connected, with the formation of a wellness path, to the imposing luxury shower area and the hamman is still enviable even in yachts of bigger dimensions. The cozy salon progresses into a relaxation area and the custom lounge sofa encourages guests to unwind and enjoy an unrivalled vantage point of the cinema system and entertainment facilities. The salon expertly explores the idea of asymmetrical spaces, where the dining area is the aft port side just behind the galley is custom designed in a white lacquered wood and top-splash in silestone material maintaining consistency throughout as this design was also for the bar countertop which established continuity of style from outdoor to indoor. The Sundeck offers incredible exterior space and the designers were keen to make full use of the outdoor setting to establish different areas where the sunshine and sea could be totally enjoyed. The concept was to create a multi-functional outdoor area to assist dining, relaxation and meditation purposes. From the Jacuzzi joint to the sunpad the emphasis remains on senusal experience and total relaxation. A large comfortable sofa was given a central position opposite the bar with its fully equipped fridges, ice-makers and a big barbeque-grill which brings a much

needed social aspect to the yacht’s external narrative. One of M/Y Yolo’s most impressive areas however is the amazing forward sunpad on the main deck with its bank of atmospheric lighting and backlit biminis, where the high-end sound system makes the space a perfect place enjoy an enchanting cruise. The Designers made bold but knowledgable experiments with materials never before used on board such as the natural stone light panels in the aft staircase to the Owner Area and the cork mirror frame in the bathroom. The VIP glass doors were with inlaid silk wires and the horn details of the salon shelves and cabinet handles gave M/Y Yolo a distinct and luxury feel throughout. Wishing to avoid the standard shiny leathers generally used on ceilings, the Designers carried out vast research into different options and finishes. The final result was a custom-made material similar to alcantara, giving a matte effect to the ceilings and was continued to the Owner’s cabin headboard is in a custom design of woven goat leather produced by Luxury Projects Supplies . The interior of the yacht are largely dominated by a tactile finish from the use of the personalized wood and complimentary textures such leathers and embossed fabrics which created relaxed and joyful atmosphere steeped in comfort and luxury. Whilst the project was entrusted to the Luxury Projects design team in its entirety, the Owner remained in constant contact and set out strict requirements concerning the spaces, to the lighting effects and colour scheme. It really is high praise indeed then to consider his total satisfaction at the end result. Luxury Projects founder and CEO, Laura Pomponi was naturally delighted for M/Y YOLO to have been awarded a 2015 International Yacht and Aviation Award. When discussing their win she commented, “The International Yacht and Aviation Awards add value. Starting with a “democratic” voting system allowing professionals of the industry and clients to express their own thoughts on yacht design, this Award is the only one which covers a full range of boats starting from 25 meters. The challenge of creating a smaller yacht often pushes further the skills of the designers in terms of space and detailing.’ The flawless intuition, constant research of innovative materials and industry knowledge were the key points which ensured the Luxury Projects team achieved fresh and new interior designs for this yacht and ensured they surpassed the Owner’s every expectation in the outcome. M/Y Yolo is a feat of design and sets the precedent for all future power yachts and it is likely the 2015 award will be just one of many for this company as it continues to grow and challenge the design market in this way.

What direction do you feel design is moving towards in general terms? My personal feeling is that the typical motoryacht design, i.e. white yachts that mostly all look alike is slowly fading away. I think prospective owners are moving towards more “organic” and unique designs. Being more efficient and green is also slowly starting to take a foothold in this slowly evolving industry. Name 5 Key themes to consider when approaching design in 2015 and beyond? - Custom & Personally tailored - Efficient - Green - Design language that reflects natural colors and materials. - serenity What projects are you currently working on? We are very excited to announce the order of a new 36m classic motoryacht to be delivered in the summer of 2017. We also are thrilled to have partnered with Reliant Yachts (USA) as their exclusive manufacturer. We will be delivering our first boat to the US within the next 2 months. 4. If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to design schemes what would it be? It’s not only for show, don’t forget you have to live in it! Criteria for the choice of materials should include durability, cleanability, comfort! A designer’s work is so diverse - how do you manage to hold down a career and a life? I highly value my family life and prioritize accordingly. I am a firm believer that a well-rounded

life is key to being happy at work and that brings success. I apply the same principles to my employees. They have a higher than average freedom to schedule their time to suit their family life. I also strongly oppose endless meetings that last all day. Few, short meetings bring more results and help everyone focus on the issue at hand. How important are the IY&A Awards as recognition of talent and achievement? It is an assurance that what we do is relevant in the eyes of the public and that our design language is in harmony with our products. What are your aims and goals for the next 12 months? Nurture our next baby in order to launch our best yacht so far and to expand our relationship with Reliant Yachts, our new US partner. Tell us a little more about yourself; The car you drive? VW Amarok Your favourite place to travel in the world? Thailand Your favourite hotel / restaurant / bar? The Oriental, Bangkok The place that gives you the most energy? On board one of our yachts The place that enable you to totally relax? Home with my family

The team behind two of this year’s awards most popular nominations, Sarp Yachts, described the IY&A Awards as ‘the dream of every designer.’ To have won both of their categories then, is surely a dream come true. Incidentally their award for this year’s ‘Concept up to 40m’ was something of a dream itself. The concise and perfect name ‘Classic 40m’ epitomises all that this beautiful yacht represents. Classical elegance with contemporary luxury and old-world values with high-end production. The plumb and fine bow, canoe stern, raked mast, big cowls and traditional windows, with their balanced use of varnished timber, define the all around character of this stunning motor yacht. Her exceptional design attributes the educated and refined approach to naval architecture of a bygone era and updates it with state-of-the art technologies and decoration. The overall effect is an ode to decadence and genteelism. The emphasis on ‘Classic’ style extends well beyond the periphery of the design itself however. Every aspect of the Sarp team’s instillations reflect and reference nautical nostalgia and a time when the pace of life was much slower and yacht owning an art form. The upper deck is dedicated to the owner in its entirety. Comprising a bespoke designed master suite, dayroom with fully installed library, protected exterior snug and open aft deck. As with all of Sarp’s initiation’s the attention to detail and thought process behind each aspect is truly original and entirely inspired. In this case the owner’s privacy and personal space were respected by ensuring the upper deck was placed within its own proximity, away from any maintenance fixtures which guaranteed that crew need not enter any part of this deck for day to day operation of the yacht. A completely private and personal space onboard; again, something of a dream for yacht owners worldwide. The interior of the Classic 40m is a ‘ColonialStyle’ inspired motif using a combination of delicate details inspired by time-honored sailing design. The main objective for the interior build was to maximise the natural light to enhance the visual aspect of the

24 Luxe Et Al

boat’s internal aspect and promote a sense of synergy onboard. The use of natural sunlight further enhances the yacht’s innate ambiance of calm as well as perfectly complimenting the calming colour-scheme chosen for her soft furnishings and interior design. The main saloon has a combination of light and dark finishes with a distressed dark wood floor and painted bulkheads. The bulkheads have a variety of distinguished details including raised and fielded panels and plantation style shutters. Such aspect reference the neocolonial design and project a feeling of sturdy, assured, solidity to the otherwise light and airy interior. All these features are complemented by the use of antique bronze mirrors which offset the rich tones of the wooden floor and maintains the overall feel of old-world luxury throughout. Other features of the interior include areas for owner’s personal art collection and personal furnishings. Sarp were keen to install a design which would age gracefully as well as becoming an organic display of the owner’s many travels and useage of the yacht in years to come. The aft entrance has two oval feature cabinets, lined in symmetry on both the port and starboard sides, with marble tops for displaying sculptures. The entrance also features a glass antique back-lit ceiling panel for added ambiance. Furthermore there is a large cabinet starboard and a niche portside for art displays. These additions extend the deep feeling of learned world travel and exploration; the yacht has a sense of refined intellect and passion for adventure. The beauty of this interior is that it has a clean and fresh canvas for the owner to personalise and tailor to his own desires. In addition to these charming details the yacht was also gifted with the ability to entertain and be a perfect host for international social events of all occasions. Forward of the large capacity and deep set seating area is a fully working bar. The bar area has complete capability for fridge, industry-standard preparation materials, ice makers and a working sink. The rear of the bar features display of the glasses and liquor with back lit glass panels to enhance the ambience of a decadent establishment from a time when entertainment and enjoyment were the accompaniment of live music and

delectable cocktails. The focal point of the bar itself a combination of marble, antique glass mirror panels and leather stitch work with antique style bar stools. A true testament to the joie de vivre. The master suite follows on in style, with similar details from the main saloon to maintain a flow and consistency to the overall design. There is a large built-in wardrobe with plantation style doors, a strong working desk or make-up table with internal storage, book shelves and seating for coffee and light breakfast meetings. There is also a plethora of storage gifted large drawers each side of the bed and a pop-up TV which is hidden inside a cabinet at the foot of the bed so as to ensure the ambience of calm is not disturbed unless specifically desired by the owner. The interior is one of timeless sophistication and style but has been delicately personalised with crucial attention to detail, which relays the skill and artistry employed by Sarp during this project, for their client. As with many aspects of modern life, there is a keen sense of environmental responsibility attached to this project. The idea ‘green boats’ may be a fairly new-concept but Sarp were able to bring many ecologically sound aspects to the Classic 40m construction. Perhaps the most ‘green’ parameter of the Classic 40m is her long waterline length because the vessel achieves cruising speed easily with low power. Additionally, minor adjustments and instillations were utilised during the design process to increase efficiency of the yacht overall: fine lines, moderate displacement and beam conservatively and continuously rated modern diesels. Whist high reduction ratio gearboxes turning large propellers running in deep clean water and well designed appendages ensure the Classic 40m will bring her owners many years of pleasurable sailing without negatively impacting the environment around her The Classic 40m not only encapsulates her name but excels it. The finest example of timeless, traditional elegance with contemporary craftsmanship and architectural excellence. The Sarp design team have achieved new feats of design precedence with this collaboration and their award is a richly deserved token of their exemplary achievements.

ABOVE: S/Y In Love, Winner of the Sailing Yacht Interior Design Category The 35.6m sailing yacht was delivered by Su Marine Yachts in July 2014 with Interior Design by Jean Guy Vergès and Exterior Design and Naval Architecture by Taka Yachts / Tanju Kalaycioglu. The brief for the Interior Design of S/Y In Love was for the design to be very flowing and simple with no sharp corners. Despite the large volumes and opens areas, guests can still can have privacy and their own suites, with living spaces quite large for a sailing yacht of this size. Similarly, there are various places on the external deck where guests can relax and choose to enjoy time together or in a quiet space alone. It was requested for the interiors to be designed in a very contemporary style. This is in direct contrast with the external design of the boat which is reminiscent of a classic sailing yacht in the 1930s. The result of this contrast is an elegant mix between the two styles that creates a beautiful yet not overdone sailing yacht matching her owners taste and lifestyle. A scheme of light shades was decided upon, with cream and beige contrasting with darker wood and white lacquers shades. The use of natural materials creates a very relaxing feeling and a cosy interior throughout the boat. Sober lines and the furniture throughout the boat create a continuity and the interesting mix of wood and leathers with Turnstyle hardware accents brings a very classy feel. The result is an interior of an elegant simplicity. A motif inspired by Asian “Bas Relief” and styled to fit the overall surrounding design like wardrobe doors and enhanced with mirror trimming brings a Zen feeling to the interior. Ceilings are finished in panels made of Spinneybeck leather, stitching edges in the way of French Famous leather craft brands as well as the staircases made of the same finishing on its leather panelled walls and elegantly shaped hand railings in wood and polished stainless steel stanchions. Above: SARP46 by Sarp Yacht - Winner of the Yacht Concept Over 40 Metres Award With interior design by Adam Lay and exterior design and naval architecture by Osman Tanju Kalaycioglu, Sarp Yacht created a motoryacht which would stand the test of time. The intention for the design was to give character to the vessel in every possible setting she may sail to. For this her lines had to be nicely flowing, well-proportioned and fresh. Her shape and size are carefully refined to stay just below the 500 gross ton mark. Steel was the obvious choice for a strong and reliable hull with ample tank capacity. However, Sarp Yacht opted for epoxy composite to construct her curvy superstructure. By doing this, the team could save weight from the superstructure and fairing compound. The interior of Sarp Yachts’ new 46m motor yacht blends loft apartment styling and mountain chalet influences with a combination of high end natural timber and metal finishes. The aim was to produce a sophisticated and elegant interior, interwoven with clean simplicity of design that results in an inviting, comfortable and relaxing atmosphere. Organic marine animal inspired shapes dominate the design. Above all else, three fundamental principles are paramount to this design: safety first, form to satisfy function and maximum use of space. www.sarpyacht.com

ABOVE: Niki Lauda’s Global 6000, Winner of the Private Jet Design Category Completed in February 2015 by Bombardier Business Aircraft, Niki Lauda’s tailored Global 6000 features a spectacular interior design to match his European taste. Bombardier collaborated with Mr. Lauda’s own personal designer – Hannes Rausch to conceive and complete this unique project. As the focus point of the overall design, the inspiration for styling was a small grey pinstripe fabric. Although the veneer, to some tastes, could be considered quite busy, the fact that all the rest of the materials for the most part have all the same pattern and colour makes it look more relaxed. At the same time it has a very elegant and “manly” feel like a nice worsted wool or pinstriped suit. It makes one wonder if the entire scheme could be viewed as a window into Niki Lauda’s secret alter ego. The Global 6000 sets the performance benchmark in the ultra-long range jet category. Created to answer the needs of the world’s most discerning travellers, the 6000 is an advanced, comfortable and luxurious business jet. With a state-of-the-art cockpit, luxurious cabin and the tranquil sanctuary of its aft stateroom, the Global 6000 seizes the opportunity to demonstrate leadership in style, ingenuity, comfort and convenience – nothing has been overlooked. www.businessaircraft.bombardier.com

The 2015 award for Interior Design in the Power Yacht category was one of the most anticipated of the event’s celebration on account of the many outstanding and exceptional designs to be nominated in this category. This year’s winner is Stella Maris; a spectacular 72 metre by from Italian superyacht constructors VSY. The company have won several awards in the past for many of their stunning designs and architectural masterpieces but the Stella Maris is incomparable and unrivalled. Whilst she epitomises the edification and atonement of elegance and sophistication, Stella Maris offers tailor-designed functionality and practicality; hugely attractive considerations for any potential owner. The project of this elite superyacht was entrusted to the expertise of the architect Espen Øino in cooperation with Laurent Giles Naval Architects. The concept was to blend traditional elements of design and layout with new variations on a theme. What ensued was a creation of architectural excellence – staggered internal decks, the increased space and light and the innovative form of the bow. The resulting layout ensures a volume, more usually seen in yachts of greater dimensions, of 2,114 GRT. The yacht is equipped with a certified helideck, a deck for the exclusive use of guests, a separate Owner’s deck and suites with a finished height of 270 cm allowing maximum space to be enjoyed. The Stella Maris also permits her guests the pleasure and surely an exclusive novelty - of enjoying green landscapes at sea with live house plants crossing the decks. Concepts of the internal and external spaces were interpreted in a very unconventional way to ensure a sense of originality and a bespoke experience. In the two main saloons and the Owner’s cabin, there are spectacular walls made entirely of glass, thus allowing

58 Luxe Et Al

the eye to see and enjoy beyond what would normally be a rigid barrier. The helideck and a sundeck, conceived also for evening use with suitable atmospheric lighting, are featured by essential materials and colour tones reminiscent of a Mediterranean beach which is furthe emphasized by the large beach area located near the water. The interior design by Michela Reverberi is inspired by simple lines together with refined embellishments of natural stones, fabrics and veneers which spell freshness, lightness and luminosity where the external and internal ambiances merge. Stella Maris with her split-level decks and sole to ceiling glazing is an extraordinary example of engineering sophistication and environmental responsibility whilst being ever mindful of her guest’s experiences and desires whilst on board. It is truly a pleasure to consider a yacht of such manufacturing magnitude to balance elements of light and genteel beauty throughout the sturdy and imposing design. Stella Maris is yet another example of VSY’s ability to interpret the most exclusive ideas of an owner; creating leisure craft where living at sea is an unimaginable privilege and pleasure. It is likely that Stella Maris triumphed in the Interior Design category on account of the complete synergy between Interior and Exterior design. Many of the strong elements of the exterior are emphasized and complemented in the interior, such as the vast selection of windows, the extraordinary heights and the use of light. The Interior project considered the architecture and the deeper decorative elements when plans were being conceptualised. According to those lucky enough to have visited the yacht, including designers, media and competitors, the yacht had the definitive “wow” factor immediately perceived as they arrived onboard.

The consistency of the exterior styling; the staggered decks, the interior heights, swathes of natural light flooding in from the panoramic windows create an impressive but comfortable ambiance for all passengers. The Stella Maris also won praise for her spaces of multifunctionality such as the main and upper saloons serving as formal meeting areas and social spaces, the live gardens bringing a sense of the land to the sea as well as the aforementioned window design allowing the stunning vistas to remain ever visible for guest choosing to enjoy the internal aspects of the vessel. The elegance and sophistication of the interior styling is further complimented by the selection of furniture and soft furnishings which decorate the interior aspects. Furthermore, the many environmentally-friendly technologies available throughout the yacht make her a consciously aware creation, with sympathy for her surroundings. Everything from the concept to the actualisation of this Power Yacht set her a class apart from her competitors and it is not without reason that VSY remain so successful, and highly praised, in their endeavours to create yachts of supreme standing and stellar design. The 2015 award is of particular significance for VSY as their first yacht, the 62 mt Sealyon (ex CANDYSCAPE II) won the first edition of the International Yacht Awards in 2011. A great success both for VSY and the Interior Designer CANDY & CANDY and the awards remain an important focus for the company each year. The Stella Maris is a yacht of exceptional beauty, power and functionality and to have won such a prestigious award only serves to enhance the many accolades VSY have achieved. A worthy winner and a company certain to enjoy many successes at the International Yacht and Aviation awards in future years.

The winner of the 2015 International Yacht and Aviation award for Power Yacht Refit was H2 Yacht Design’s M/Y Turquoise. The fifth annual awards was one of the competition’s most hotly contested and it truly is testament to the ingenuity of the Londonbased design company that they were chosen by industry peers as being the best of a shortlist which featured many stunning designs and represented the awards’ most successful year to date. Designed to turn heads, the breathtaking 181 ft/55.4m custom motor yacht Turquoise was built in 2011 by Proteksan Turquoise. The Turkish firm produce four first-class luxury yachts per year but M/Y Turquoise has become the jewel in their heavily ordained crown. Under her new owner, Turquoise has undergone a considerable interior refit in 2014. Her luxurious, contemporary interior was conceived by the award winning team at H2 Yacht Design. The Refit was completed in Italy, Genoa at Amico. Amico worked on all exterior changes and MVS & Associates were the interior contractors. The collaboration was key to the overall success of the design and a representative for Amico & Co explained the way in which the cooperation between companies helped the design process yield a prosperous and now award winning result; “Amico & Co. had an excellent cooperation with H2 Yacht Design and the company MVS & Associates, and this relationship allowed us to achieve extraordinary results, both quality and time wise. The end result was obtained thanks to the professionalism of Amico, H2 and MVS and to the skill of the workers of all the inhouse departments involved.” The design brief for the refit was entirely focused on enhancing the ambience of luxury and indulgence on board. M/Y Turquoise’s new owner requested that H2 Yacht Design refit the yacht with a lavish and plush look inspired by M/Y Talisman Maiton after having chartered this yacht for various social occasions. It was more than good fortune that M/Y Talisman Maiton was part of H2’s own portfolio and therefore the incoming design team were able to approach the M/Y Turquoise project with a wealth of inspirations, suppliers and concepts already freely available. The owners expressed their love for the way in which the Talisman Maiton operated as well as their good relationship with her crew. Upon completion of the M/Y Turquoise refit, some ex Maiton crew were hired to provide

the same level of familiar and exemplary service on board the owners’ new, updated yacht. Turquoise’s interior layout sleeps up to 12 guests in 6 staterooms, including a master suite, 1 VIP stateroom, 3 double cabins, and 1 twin cabin. Her 12 crew are also treated to improved facilities with increased space within their own quarters. Elegant styling, beautiful furnishings and sumptuous seating feature throughout the refreshed design and her living areas combine soft tactile textures with hard wearing surfaces for luxury and longevity. The interior aspect invokes a tangible sense of relaxation and comfort whilst the design lends itself to socialising and leisurely pursuits with ease. The spaces, both exterior and interior, have been designed to accommodate as much human interaction as possible, to create a nice family atmosphere whilst providing areas of privacy for those wishing to escape the hectic nature of every day life. Turquoise’s impressive leisure and entertainment facilities make her the ideal charter yacht for entertaining with family and friends. The sun deck, with its oversized spa pool that comfortably accommodates 12 people, offers a huge, sinuously curving relaxation area that is paved with sun pads, as well as a bar and L-shaped settees under the shade of the radar arch. Every aspect of the demands of entertaining are catered for from dining, drinking and delighting in a dance or dip in the pool. Whilst the external aspects of the sun deck serve the purpose of hosting parties and exploiting the natural sunlight to its best advantage, the interior design of M/Y Turquoise displays the decadent depths of the design process. The team consulted many suppliers and manufacturers throughout the project, using their enviable list of international contacts to source only the finest elements with which to refresh the yacht’s impressive iterior. Rich, inviting carpets were supplied by UK based firm Arundell Carpets. The idea of contrasting the sleek solid surfaces of the yacht’s exterior with soft, comforting flooring internally was a key component of the desire to create a welcoming sanctuary within M/Y Turquoise. The company specialise in providing furnishings for the yacht industry and their expertise in this field is evidenced by the craft and appearance of the carpet design. Furthermore, London-based interior design firm Porta Romana supplied artistic light

fixtures for each of M/Y Turquoise’s cabins. The undulating shape of the Ribbon Wall light sets beautiful soft shadows that lighten and darken the surface finish to create an inviting and peaceful ambience within the lavish master suite of the yacht. Also in this room is the company’s large Pasteur lamp which is reminiscent of old apothecary bottles for an antique luxury feel. The beautiful crackled glass shimmers in the light and delightfully enhances the homelike ambience of the stunning stateroom. The Nickel Box wall light was personally designed by Ali Milam, one of the company’s senior specialists. A classic, well proportioned about this piece brings elegance to one of M/Y Turquoise’s suites by using the simplicity forms with beautiful material for a perfect, subtle but impressive finish. This design features in all three of the the double guest cabins along with the Droplet lamp design. A delicate beauty of blown glass with two planes of scalloped and polished facets on either side, this lamp is akin to table jewellery; admirable and functional. An elegant neck of gold or silver spun texture sets off the lamp body like a fine piece of adornment, found on one of the M/Y Turquoise’s many trips to the world’s shopping capitals. In the twin room, the dramatic slashes of metal in the Flynn Wall Light are actually made by individually cut and beaten ‘Flynns’, strips of metal, heated in the forge and then carefully bent and beaten into shape. Named after the legendary actor Errol Flynn who played so many accomplished swordsmen. The acute artistry evident within this design encapsulates the level of consideration and care which informed every aspect of this project. The guest room also features the same large Pasteur lamp design as the master suite, which brings a beautiful sense of completion and continuity to the entire design. To have chosen such detailed and bespoke designed elements for even the most practical of installations such as light fittings is the essence of a company which worked tirelessly to ensure the refit proves as impressive as it is successful. M/Y Turquoise effortlessly combines style with functionality; she is both pleasing to look at and to sail. A truly productive project on every level and a winner in every sense, the M/Y Turquoise collaboration was a flourishing success for all parties and H2 Yachts can be immensely proud of what they achieved in this project, in addition to the overwhelming pride of the yacht’s delighted owners.

With each passing year the standard of designs submitted to the International Yacht and Aviation awards become more impressive and exceptional. This is particularly evident from the 2015 shortlist for the Commercial Cabin – Economy / Business Class category. Designers are now pushing the boundaries of what is expected in this market and reshaping the way in which the every day traveller can experience their journey. The 2015 winner of this award is Finnair’s Airbus 350XWB by dSign’s Vertti Kivi & Co. The Helsinki-based team have created a motif which is the first of its kind for a commerical aircraft. Futuristic yet functional, it is not only a marvel to be admired across the entire industry but furthermore, a firm example of the direction in which all aviation design will seek to take as passengers desire luxury for every price range. It is testament to the rich passion of dSign’s team that they were able to create an entirely original concept with which to inspire and inform their design as it was executed. The company rejuvenated the notion of commercial travel by developing their idea Space Alive which focused on the use of light as an active tool with which to alter the ambiance and all round comfort of the cabin for its passengers. A spectrum of lighting shades were programmed to time in accordance with the jets’ flight path. The result is a visual extravaganza which brings a new level of awakening to traditional travel. The light design encompasses the destination and the various time-zones the plane will cross during flight. The aura and culture of the environment above which the plane is cruising is brought into the cabin and surrounds passengers to bring them closer to the world across which they explore. For example. when approaching the Far East the cabin is flooded by warm, rich sunset tones, and when arriving in the Nordic countries the surfaces are lit with the cool, calming colours of Scandinavian sky, from Northern Lights to a clear blue sky. Never before has air-travel been experienced in such a optical, sensory way. As always, aircraft design offers many challenges, the weight of materials and viability for long-haul travel are highly restrictive . To overcome this dSign worked extensively to create a concept which was not only a design archetype but a functional, durable creation. The initial aspect of the project involved intensive research into possible solutions and instillations to

74 Luxe Et Al

facilitate the design. The team were ardent in their approach to sourcing ecologically sound and low-density materials with which to facilitate their vision for the project. Quality was not compromised nor expectation; the design was completed to the highest standard using high-end products for maximum effect. The rebranding of Finnair’s economy and business class cabins was fully-tailored to suit both the demands of the aircraft and the needs of its passengers. In order to maintain a sense of personal identity the main colour scheme utilises a fresh, clean blue and white palette with which to represent the Finnish skies and Nordic landscape. Finnair’s Vice President of Product Development, Jarkko Konttinen, explained the motivation behind the revitalization by saying, “Our aim is to provide a soothing, calming space for our customers, and give them a hassle-free travel experience. The lights, sounds and design of our premises, both on board our new state-of-the-art A350s and in our lounges at Helsinki Airport, all play an important part in this effort, while also communicating our unique Nordic identity.” dSign’s Space Air concept was so well received by Finnair the company commisioned the design to be installed on 11 of its international, long-haul flights with plans to further expand in coming months. At present the first A3050s will be used for the flights serving Shanghai, Bangkok and Beijing, with Hong Kong and Singapore A350 service to be added in 2016. The company have revealed the dSign’s A350 will form the backbone of the company’s long-haul fleet and trademark their luxury, unique style service. The originality and simplicity of dSign’s intelligent use of lighting for the Airbus A350 XWB is the brainchild of the company’s chief designer Vertti Kivi. Whilst it is absolutely a cinematic-esque concept, there are far more functional reasons behind its instillation. With the design proposed exclusively for Finnair’s long-haul flights, the idea was to gently improve passengers’ ability to acclimatise upon landing by easing customers on long-haul journeys into new time zones, destinations and seasons. The dynamic LED lighting system is programmed onboard to gradually recall some 24 different skyscapes as the flight progresses, mirroring light patterns of the rising or setting sun, various cloud

formations, and even the hypnotic dance of Nordic natural wonder of the aurora borealis; the northern lights. In addition to this groundbreaking light scheme, the Airbus A350 cabin also features an advanced pure air filtration system that changes the air in the cabin every few minutes. Draft-free air management, adjustable multiple temperature zones and a lower cabin pressure also enhance the wellbeing of passengers and crew on board; the primary aim of the entire project. Passenger comfort was the paramount concern in all aspects of the remarkable design and it is evident that a new standard has been set for commercial travel. The 297-seat configuration includes 46 seats in Business Class in a 1+2+1 layout, ensuring direct aisle access to all Business Class passengers. The Zodiac Cirrus III seats convert to fully flat beds for maximum relaxation on long-haul flights, while a 16inch touch-screen inflight entertainment system comes programmed with films, TV shows, music and other digital content on demand in numerous languages. Seats in Business Class also come equipped with AC and USB power outlets whilst all passengers have access to WiFi on board. The Economy Class cabin features comfortable Zodiac Z300 slim-line seats with a 31-inch seat pitch in a 3+3+3 layout. At the front of the Economy Class cabin are 43 Economy Comfort seats, with increased width headrests for improved support, highquality headphones and and an extra four inches of leg room. All seats in Economy include an 11-inch touch screen inflight entertainment system and USB power outlets; ensuring even the lowest fare prices benefit from enhanced comfort. In keeping with the aircraft’s nature-inspired design the eco-smart engineering of the A350 also brings more than 25 per cent improvement in fuel efficiency and operating cost over the previous generation of aircraft in its class, significantly reducing the carbon footprint of Finnair and its passengers. This design is a true trailblazer for future airtravel and excellence in aviation. The dSign team’s unique, intelligent and creative approach to the project has remastered the way in which commercial airlines operate and the type of experience passengers can expect when boarding a long-haul flight. A truly exceptional design in every sense; this is a landmark design set to inspire future generations.

luis vidal + architects (LVA), distinguished by its specialization and experience in airport design, responded to the challenge of reorganizing the main priorities in a terminal building, while setting what may become a model of airports of the future. By applying responsibility in three levels (environmental, social and economic), LVA has successfully achieved a sustainable terminal and the first BREEAM Excellent airport in the world. A flexible humanized space for freedom and social consensus that fulfils the real needs of contemporary travel by putting passengers first and giving them back the joy of air travel, while accomplishing the strong requirements of operators and airlines. A complex project completed on time and on budget that generates economic revenue and allows future growth and expansion.

“ The waves on the roof tilt to the North as a deliberate decision to allow natural light to flood the terminal. This aesthetic gesture serves different functional purposes while form and function are deeply integrated into this building ”

Designed to be extension of the city of London, like cathedrals of the past, London Heathrow Terminal 2 – The Queen’s Terminal was officially opened by the Queen on the 4th June 2014. The terminal replaces the very first passenger building to be opened by the Queen in 1955. The original building was designed to deal with 1.2 million passengers a year. By the time it closed in 2009 it was handling 8 million passengers a year. Now the home for 23 Star Alliance member airlines, Terminal 2 is one of the primary gateways of the UK. In this first phase, 20 million people, over twice the population of London, will travel through it annually. This terminal has been conceived as a destination into itself, an extension of London —an iconic building that establishes a sense of place that will remain in the memory of passengers, as they can feel free and at ease in a welcoming atmosphere. Natural light, acoustics, texture and colour, intuitive way finding and a well-studied balance between services, retail and amenities are part of the values incorporated into the terminal design to enhance the passenger experience. Consistent with many of LVA’s previous airport designs is Terminal 2’s striking roof, it is the most prominent and most recognizable feature organizing the structure of Terminal 2. This floating, undulating enclosure forms three giant vaults to make navigation and way finding more instinctive. These three arches mark and guide the stages of the passenger’s departure: check-in, security control and departure lounge. The waves on the roof tilt to the North as a deliberate decision to allow natural light to flood the terminal. This aesthetic gesture serves different functional purposes while form and function are deeply integrated into this building. Firstly, light from the north provides the most consistent and homogeneous quality of natural light, reducing significantly the need for artificial light. Additionally, the underside of the roof is covered with a soft material – almost like an artist’s canvas– which helps bounce natural light during the day and assists the reflection of artificial light at night. Secondly, utilizing natural light from the north is a direct and conscious decision to reduce solar gain

82 Luxe Et Al

and thereby contribute significantly to the reduction of cooling requirements, energy consumption and CO2 emissions. Lastly, the roof, due to it’s seemingly weightlessness, seems to vanish, contributing to passenger’s comfort inside the terminal. The passenger feels like being outside in the open air, in a public piazza: 20.000m2 of leisure space distributed between two floors giving passengers the freedom to choose their preferred amenity and enabling immediate access to departure gates, located within sight of retail and concession facilities. There is one common element LVA has designed for every user of the future Terminal 2 at Heathrow: the passenger experience. Passengers react in different ways and moods, affected by different personal factors: time, companions, business, leisure, connecting flights. But LVA believe that there are also common factors that affect people: the quality of light acoustics, perceived textures and colours, comfort, ambience, legibility of the building (understanding what comes next) and way finding, as well as views to the exterior where they can orient themselves. Terminal 2 has been designed taking into account all of these factors, as well as the passenger’s well-being and willingness to enjoy what a great Terminal has to offer: quality of waiting spaces, ample and useful information about departures, concessions and shopping. From passengers’ point of view, movement through the building is straightforward, direct and fluid as architecture is open, simple and helps guiding this process in an intuitive way -with no queues, a passenger may take not more than 3 minutes to jump down from the plane and be inside his car. Terminal 2 is much more than a building conceived for planes and passengers to take off and land: LVA has created this terminal as a destination in itself, attracting passengers to the terminal earlier than their departure time in order to spend time, enjoy the welcoming atmosphere and experience the wide range of amenities, services and retail the airport has to offer. The design was lead with a clear vision of environmental responsibility. Terminal 2 will be the world’s first terminal to be awarded BREEAM “Excellent” rating for its sustainable building design. The continued commitment to sustainable construction on Terminal 2 began before any of the new building had been erected, the demolition of its predecessor, as more than 90% of the demolished concrete we reused. Terminal 2 has been designed to be as energy efficient as possible: it incorporates an innovative and sophisticated system of active and passive measures to reduce the ecological footprint. The result is a reduction in CO2 emissions by 40%. Terminal 2 was thoughtfully and thoroughly designed to become a state-of-the-art terminal for all users. It is an airport of the future that embraces flexibility, cutting-edge technology, environmental responsibility and efficiency, thus enhancing the passenger experience.

Acumen Design Associates have enjoyed further success with their First Class cabin design “First Apartments”. It has been 5 years in the making, and with greatest commitment to cabin interior product design made by any airline in the world, Etihad Airways have created a ground-breaking product which redefines all classes of flight. It began in 2008 when Etihad Airways embarked on a search for a leading design agency partner to design the future cabin interiors for their new fleet of A380 (and latterly B787) aircraft. Etihad Airways have always stated its ambition to be the ‘Best airline in the World’, and outlined a vision for the project that would build on their success and continue to redefine airline travel. This meant that they wanted to disrupt the status quo in the industry and create a unique Guest experience that would reflect the exciting vision of Abu Dhabi. An overall vision for the aircraft based on the airline’s successful ‘Inspired Service’. The vision was to bring the individuality and exclusivity of a ‘Luxury Boutique hotel experience – that embraced Arabian modernism’.

“ The vision was to bring the individuality and exclusivity of a ‘Luxury Boutique hotel experience – that embraced Arabian modernism. ”

Since the development of the seat-to-bed products in the mid 90’s, little has changed to transform the basic layout and approach to first class suite design. First Class products are mostly forward facing seats with furniture built around them – usually configured as a 1:2:1 twin aisle layout on a wide bodied aircraft. It is the new wave of seats and separate beds in this first class cabin which, as Anthony Harcup of Acumen Design Associates explains, is the “key differentiator”, that ensures the airline leads the first class sector. Anthony added that the development of this initiative required creating vast amounts of mock-ups from the small mechanisms right through to entire cabins. “The challenge was to design a structurally sound kinematic that could transform an 80.5in-long ottoman into a 26.5in-wide bed and package it into a 1.5in-thick envelope, while maintaining a clean and consistent aesthetic in either state,” recalls Anthony Harcup. Acumen took full responsibility for all aspects of the seat design and development. Their service encompassed blue-sky concept designs and layouts, through to the development of the conceptual engineering and product styling, to managing the suppliers though to delivery. Acumen are named inventors for all elements of the new seat designs which are currently patent pending. Fundamentally, the single aisle (1:1) of Etihad’s First Apartments is completely unique and different to any product that has

gone before, with real room-like proportions, offering a separate seat and bed without compromise to either, and corridor of floor-space allowing dynamic passenger movement around the suite. This provides the passenger more choice in how and where they relax, eat, sleep and even entertain other guests. A particularly special item in the First Class suite is the bed. It is 80.5” long and 26.5” wide and is entirely separate from the seat. It is covered in Poltrona Frau Leather, with dress cover stitch-detailing, jointly developed with their Ferrari interior designed Luca Bellomari and his team. Its function is spectacular as it doubles as a two piece divan style sofa when the suite is in lounge-mode yet powers down using a custom designed mechanism into a flat-bed for night time. It is an industry first in all of these ways, and is a fundamental element in the success of the suite design – it even doubles as a powered ottoman for the seated passenger. Each Apartment comes equipped with an adjustable 24-inch flat screen TV, which can be viewed from the armchair or while relaxing in bed, together with a vanity cabinet with ample lighting and space for personal effects, a chilled drinks cabinet and a wardrobe. In 6 of the 9 suites, the passengers can even open up the suites into doubles, so if you are travelling with your neighbour, you can retract a discreet screen to reveal the adjoining apartment. Over 75% of the suite geometry consists of doors, panels and assemblies which slide or move mechanically, and new mechanisms were designed and developed from scratch to facilitate a number of these unprecedented conditions. The increased storage space has allowed the overhead bins to be removed and pave the way for the highest privacy walls in the sky – giving the unique architectural feel to the cabin. James Hogan, Etihad Airways’ president and chief executive, said: ‘These new living spaces will raise the inflight product and service standards to their highest level yet in commercial aviation and alter air travellers’ expectations of inflight comfort and luxury forever.’ Ian Dryburgh, CEO of Acumen Design Associates said “We have noticed a progressive shift in terms of Class demarcation particularly when an airline is moving from tri-class to dual class by replacing their existing First Class with a higher density Super Business Class.” It is an un-rivalled First-Class space and experience. Ian Dryburgh on receiving his award said “The IY&A Awards are a great idea, especially as the Yacht and Aviation sectors have obvious synergies in terms of interior design skill sets, making a shared celebration entirely logical.”
