The recent International Hotel & Property Awards were held in Portofino, where winners were announced, following an incredible four weeks of voting by readers and design professionals. This year more that 17,000 completed individual votes were cast over this time. Hotel design I feel is an important area to consider, but more than this to take inspiration from, gain ideas and formulate plans going forward. Commercial designers have the space and often budgets to push boundaries in hotel design and as a result their schemes are exciting, sometimes “larger than life .

For those of us who work or live in a more domestic setting this offers us the ideas and vision which can often be translated into our own schemes. With this in mind we have taken a closer look into some of the winning projects from The International Hotel & Property Awards, this year. From a personal perspective it is always very nice to see inspirational design hotels when planning your next holiday too. Or if you have just returned, look forward to the next trip. So with this in mind, sit back, relax and take a look at some of the award winning projects you could be visiting next. Until next month Joanne

G.A Design is a leading interior and architectural design practice specializing in hospitality design worldwide. For more than 30 years, the London-based company have work closely with a vast spectrum of the industry’s finest hotels, designers and architects to create some of the world’s most prestigious residences. The company have continued to add to their extensive list of impressive projects and have gained international recognition for the quality of their work and their ability to incorporate significant cultural references and local architecture. This year has seen that much deserved recognition bolstered by their winning the International Hotel and Property Award in the Hotel 20-200 Rooms (Europe) category for their design in the Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam. Set within six elegantly restored 17th century canal houses, the new Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam transports it’s guests to a world of discreet luxury and historical refinement. The interiors of the buildings reflect the restrained elegance of traditional Dutch design. G.A. Design were approached to create a classic contemporary interior with strong reference to location and maritime history. Carefully sourced finishes, delicate detailing, rich textures and highend products create an ambience of cultural wealth and a comfortable setting of the highest calibre. G.A Design’s every installation and design decisions help to relay the fascinating story of Amsterdam during the Age of Discovery. Within the interior spaces of the Heritage buildings, a unique authentic experience has been created using fabrics and fixtures synonymous with the era such as fine linen and bespoke one-off designs – interiors which evoke the essence of traditional Dutch society in a clean, defined manner. The exterior of the Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam features an iconic ‘Five Window’ design, a symbol of significant wealth and influence in 17th century society. A statuesque staircase guides guests to the grand reception area which maintains much period detailing, including a decadent facade and aristocratic ambiance. The entrance of the hotel is adorned in a subtle décor with a muted colour pallette which pays homage to the relaxed simplicity of the city itself. Antique lanterns softly illuminate the elaborate ceilings in a manner which makes the entire area highly inviting. An oversized rug sits a classic marble floor for a contemporary feel; the fresh tones of which offer a cutting-edge take on the

20 Design Et Al

traditional carpets of stately houses in Amsterdam’s old high-society. Touches reminiscent of residential comforts add warm and attractive elements to the scene whilst the rich timber of a decorative console, a sourced heritage mirror and a feature clock provide a lived-in, homely feel. The interiors still retain much of the authentic historic detailing including exquisite plaster work designs, cornices, ceilings, architraves and also several authentic fireplaces which are now a focal point of the new guestrooms. To balance out the ornateness of these period features uncluttered, fresh, light rooms have been created in which the feeling of openness pervades whilst natural light is maximised through full height windows where drapery is restrained. Steffi Backhouse, the Senior Designer at GA who designed and managed the Waldorf Astoria project in Amsterdam explained the various elements at work with in the concept to expertly marry the beauty of tradition with contemporary elegance. “The interiors for the Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam were designed using a very strong narrative about the trading links of the Dutch East India Company during the 17th Century Age of Discovery. We selected Lelievre’s “Bivouac” as our drapery for the guestrooms, to introduce the quality of Dutch linen, at that time being exported worldwide. To ensure we met all the modern fire requirements we used this beautiful Trevira quality fabric with its elegant sheen befitting an elegant hotel, as curtains framing views to the canal and the gardens. The window dressing was completed with one of Lelievre’s soft sheer fabrics (“Claire”) from the standard range to filter light and create privacy.” The level of research and amount of precision which informed each aspect of the project is entirely evident within the decadent design however G.A Design expertly interweave the historical elements and modern touches with such ease that the overall effect is one of effortless elegance and contemporary class. Each aspect of the Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam design reflects understated luxury and delicate affluence. From the refined tranquil interiors that reference the canal waters and famous Dutch paintings, to the framed views of the manicured gardens, the entire hotel is something of a love letter to the city both past and present. The atmosphere is authentic and sophisticated; paying homage to the history of the original buildings with current and refreshing accents, appealing to guests of all ages and tastes.

The sweeping spiral staircase in the lobby area is a magnificent focal point of the space, encouraging guests to explore to the Bel Etage; the hotel’s sensational first floor . G.A Design’s influence gifted each of the 93 guest rooms and suites with their own individual character. The rooms are decorated with variations of soft and elegant furnishings whilst accents of lapis lazuli and stronger ochre colours prevent the look losing impact or becoming washed out. The design for the living quarters of the hotel reference Holland’s own Vermeer, whose paintings include the iconic ‘The Girl With A Pearl Earring.’ Natural light is exploited for maximum effect through floor to ceiling windows framed by subtle drapery making an artistic feature of both the window itself and the stunning gardens at the hotel’s exterior. The finest fabrics, tactile textures and decadent upholstery afford a richly inviting and exquisite ambience. Luxurious bed linen compliment the sophisticated setting to establish a feeling of complete comfort, Bathrooms feature the crisp, clean lines of contemporary spas yet retain the sophistication of historical bath-houses with exquisite pattern and accessories. Given the admirable level of detail and deeply decadent design informing all aspects of this stunning project, it is perhaps no surprise that G.A Design received the award for the Hotel 20-200 Rooms (Europe) category at this year’s International Hotel and Property Awards. Discussing their much deserved accolade David Clixby, Senior Associate and lead designer of the Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam commented: “We are thrilled for the Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam to have won the design et al award for the Best European Hotel (50 200 rooms). It was a privilege to be involved in transforming these iconic canal houses from a Bank into a beautiful Hotel. Part of our brief was not to build a ‘museum’ and what we are most proud of is that with the design team, we were able to create a fresh new scheme that lets the original features of these historic houses breathe. We are also delighted that these wonderful historic interiors can now be enjoyed by the City of Amsterdam.” A truly exceptional project which combines the best in design and architectural practices and has created a modern masterpiece which retains its many historical riches. Setting a new standard for luxury and hospitality in one of Europe’s finest cities, G.A. Design’s Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam project has reset the standard for traditional hotels and is a newly revitalised icon within a city of immense cultural wealth.

Meyer Davis has designed a distinctly modern urban escape filled with dramatic glamour for the newly renovated W Chicago Lakeshore. Meyer Davis’ design concept for the W Chicago Lakeshore was formed on the basis of three intrinsically architectural themes – Chicago’s history and tradition of architecture, the hotel’s iconic Lake Shore Drive locations, and shadows and reflections of innovation. The design showcases the confluence of a vibrant world-class city meeting the serene edge of Lake Michigan and pays homage to the architectural ingenuity of Chicago. It mirrors the city’s energy, invention and industrialism. Sleeker, chicer public areas include a new signature farm-to-table restaurant, a living room concept space, and an expansion of the hotel’s prime meeting and event space, which boasts 360 degree views of the city.

“ The design team seek to create seamless physical experiences tailored to their client’s individuality, combining principles of great design with a clear vision. ”

W Lakeshore is characterized by modern lighting, energetic colours, contemporary furniture and sleek finishes that mimic and reflect the vibrant city skyline and reveal layers of the city’s architectural ingenuity. Vivid, modern and textured lighting energizes public areas and is used to create specific architectural moments. This is seen with the alternating digital images above the “conversation pods” – intimate, semi-private lounge settings separated by beaded drapery adjacent to the bar. A luxurious elements is Meyer Davis’s modern Heatherwickinspired “oyster” that frames the rear of the restaurant.520 guestrooms and suites uphold the theme of shadows and reflections with metallic and lacquered finishes reflecting incredible views. The guestrooms showcase a palette of blues and greys, black and white, and a splash of chartreuse. Additional touches includecustom silver wire brushed wooden millwork, modern chandeliers, and graphic cushions and wall coverings made from artwork by Carsten Witte, as well as custom carpeting. Creating a variety of textures, layers, and architectural pieces that could both enhance the scale of the project and also provide an intimate setting for guests. The design aesthetic is unique for Chicago. It’s breathtaking, but the hotel is also comfortable and spacious, so every custom finish has room to breath and be appreciated. The New York City–based design boutique specialise in residential, hospitality, retail and

32 Design Et Al

workplace environments. The design team seek to create seamless physical experiences tailored to their client’s individuality, combining principles of great design with a clear vision. The designers consider each new project an opportunity to bring a unique and powerful story to life. Playing with space, form, texture, and light, they develop a visual experience that seeks to compel and inspire. Meyer Davis believes that great design works on multiple levels, weaving together bold design moves and striking details to ensure that once completed, each project makes an immediate and lasting impact. The later is certainly true of the W Chicago Lakeshore project. Billed as a $38 million ‘refresh’, the design brief sought to enhance the substantial attributes of the hotel and the many inspiring elements of the city itself. Much of the design is inspired by The 1893 Chicago World Fair, a groundbreaking global event which put Chicago firmly on the map and in the sites of an international audience. The Chicago World Fair debuted thousands of entrepreneurial items to the world and the event’s focus on innovation and technology is a clear inspiration for Meyer Davis’ design for the W Chicago Lakeshore. In keeping with the hotel’s ethos of showcasing the best of Chicago then and now, much of the design team’s concept looked to ‘frame’ the city. In the guest rooms, images of iconic Chicago landmarks appear whilst the windows were extended to provide an un-interrupted, panoramic and cinematic view of the cityscape. Ingeniously, the standard headboard design was replaced with strategically installed mirrors which reflected the city skyline back into the room from the window. The design, and its extensive multi-layered elements, embody Chicago in all her forms and is inseparable from the style and swagger of this contemporary cosmopolitan. A tribute to the fine city and the exceptionally talented design team, the W Chicago Lakeshore is a world-class hotel worthy of praise not only for the unrivalled hospitality offered to guests but for Meyer Davis’ desire to reveal the very best of the hotel’s potential, in addition to the city’s own treasures. A project of substance and authenticity, there is a tangible sense the hotel belongs in this city and the city resides within the hotel.

Prestige Global Designs project ‘Orchard Residences’ is Shortlisted A Sanctuary that Rejuvenates the Senses… As a sanctuary towering above one of the world’s most famous shopping districts, The Orchard Residences in Singapore represents the pinnacle of luxury available only to a privileged few. The project’s client gave Prestige Global Designs a design brief calling for living spaces to be crafted from the highest quality materials and furnished with timeless accessories from the world’s most iconic brands. The design had to showcase the building’s grand view of the city and ultimately convince even the savviest property investors to make one or more units their own. At the same time, while creating a setting for the most lavish lifestyles, the design had to be neutral to appeal to the widest array of customers. It was also important that the design carried no religious symbol or meaning. Working with the existing layouts, size and number of rooms, Prestige Global Designs chose a contemporary luxury resort theme. Wood, marble, sandstone and plush rugs; vibrant floral motifs; and a neutral yet rich palette of gold, beige, brown, red, orange and green was used to create a refined yet luxurious atmosphere. Tea-coloured mirrors were used creatively to catch natural light and further the

34 Design Et Al

concept of space within the property. Gold trimmings were also added meticulously such as around wall features, paintings and mirrors to lend a subtle and refined additional dash of luxury. Decorative touches and tableware were all painstakingly sourced from renowned design brands. As in all successful interior design concepts, lighting was an important consideration from the very beginning. Besides having general lighting for practical reasons, energy saving and easy to maintain LED lighting was used to accentuate prime wall features and paintings. For example, LED light strips were installed in the living rooms to achieve a luxurious atmosphere and accentuate the attractive sandstone-cladded walls. The main design intent of Prestige Global Designs was to create a highly luxurious sanctuary in which residents could relax, revive and rejuvenate. Therefore, elements such as silk soft furnishings, essential oil burners and diffusers, candles and candle holders, decorative woodcarvings, water feature and a combination of both natural and dark stained timber all helped to achieve the required ambience of a peaceful retreat from the bustling city beneath the property. In addition, the entire property is infused with the fragrant scent of lemongrass. www.prestige-global.com

AyKa Design - Shortlisted In The International Product Design Awards 2015 AyKa Design are shortlisted for the second year running in the Flooring category of The International Product Design Awards 2015 with their entry ‘Reflections’ from the Textures Collection. “Textures was inspired by my travels to South America during my visits to Brazil and Argentina. Having seen the most amazing landscapes and colours, I was touched first hand by their many living abstract forms and the beauty of their surroundings. These forms inspired me to think about recreating these textures on a rug that would eventually inspire the end user and be seen as a piece of art.” The objective was to create a three dimensional design in a two dimensional form that would also be functional for the end user. Art, Beauty and Comfort were the goals while trying to achieve a texture that was not easy to construct by hand by using the Tibetan Knot. The silk yarns were first handspun creating additional various thickness which would enhance the design once flattened in a two dimensional form. Then they were first twin dyed twice to achieve a double tone on the yarns themselves giving a three dimension tone before weaving. The rug was looped tightly and as each color in the design was changed, the yarns were joined and knotted with threads hanging. These were kept until the finally finishing of the rug when carefully they were all hand cut at the end of the weaving at various heights to recreate the three dimensional element of the design. www.aykadesign.com 36 Design Et Al

NV Integration shortlisted in the Home Cinema Category NV Integration worked closely with the design team to specify products that were powerful enough to fill the large space, yet conscious of the high-end interiors. They achieved this by selecting equipment that could become completely invisible when not in use, or blend with the scheme of the room; such as the speakers and subwoofers from Meridian Audio, which are all RAL colour matched to the nearest wall surface. A high-brightness Runco projector was specified, designed to work in ambient light conditions yet provide a stunning image onto the 3 metre screen. The screen, which dynamically changes the aspect ratio with motorised masking based on the users desired viewing content also uses acoustically transparent woven fibres, allowing the full range of the speakers to be heard, yet concealed behind the screen when in use. Home automation and lighting control systems allow the theatre to be seamlessly operated from intuitive controls, or iPad app. Simply pressing ‘Watch Movie’ will lower the projector and screen, turn on devices and slowly fade the lights as the film begins from the Kaleidescape movie server; allowing the user to relax in the sumptuous interiors and become totally immersed in the action. The theatre was designed in accordance with THX standards, meaning the screen size, brightness, and noise levels are to the recommended best practices. The room interiors work so well with the cinema because it was designed to be a ‘dual-use cinema’ from the outset, and by working with the design team they brought the best from both worlds together for the finished result. www.nvintegration.co.uk Design Et Al 39

Rousham by Oliver James, shortlisted in the Glasshouse over ÂŁ50,000 Category The client was looking to add a modern yet complementary, functional yet beautiful space to their characterful 400 year old former coaching inn. Oliver James Garden Rooms were instructed to design, manage and build a variant of their Rousham style Garden Room, tailored specifically to meet their needs and those of the property. By incorporating a series of steel frames, hidden within the structure, vaulted and flat ceilings flow seamlessly into each other. They removed the ground floor of the original kitchen/dining room and the suspended box of the original first floor is now supported by a steel frame and internal steel posts that have in themselves become a design feature in the new kitchen. Despite the size of the gable end window above the jumbo sliding doors, the hidden internal structure enabled them to use just one pane of glass to keep the lines as clutter-free as possible. The new kitchen and Garden Room now lead internally into a former stable, now converted into the master bedroom, whilst externally the Garden Room flows down into the garden below. www.oliverjamesgardenrooms.co.uk 40 Design Et Al

Juliette Byrne Shortlisted for the Ski Chalet Award in The ID&A Awards 2015 It is with great pleasure that design et al announce the successful shortlist for Juliette Byrne for the Ski Chalet Award in the ID&A Awards 2015. The clients commissioned Juliette Byrne to carry out complete renovation of an unmodernised ski chalet in the St Martin de Bellville area of the Trois Valley and redesign the internal room layouts and carry out all of the interior design work. The designers were restricted by the original yellow pine clad walls but overcame this by re sanding and applying a grey wash to create a more contemporary and warm feel to the chalet. All the main living areas were opened up so that the space flowed through and allowed the views to be created. New windows were installed to the rear and ceiling beam detailings were fitted sto ensure that down lights could be concealed. The study seating area had a chimney breast fitted to give a focal point to the room and this was clad in stone with integrated log storage and seating built in. The bedrooms were clad in antique wood and stained to match the rest of the reception areas. New ensuite bathrooms were fitted and a large industrial style kitchen was installed. A banquette seating area was created which allows for up to 18 guests and an aluminium stencilled bar was designed and built to compliment the space. All of the beams had concealed lighting fitted on the first floor and soft seating was built in with additional armchairs and games tables adjoining. The very top floor of the chalet had a separate entrance built so that it could be accessed from the outside or internally from the main house. A stunning spa can be found in the basement and has been fitted with metallic texture tiles and a plunge pool. The overall feel is one of elegance with warmth and particular attention has been paid to use natural materials within the soft furnishings such as suede and linens. Local materials and craftsmen were used wherever possible to create a wonderful classic contemporary ski environment. www.juliettebyrne.com

Final Fix shortlisted for the Gulf States – Residential £5 Million Plus (Project Value) and the Gulf States - Living Space Award This private villa is located in Dubai and is to be used as a rest house during weekends. The client asked for a simple, comfortable, open space design. The villa was built some 30 years ago and the designers were instructed on the renovation of the interior space, taking into consideration the available space and MEP services that should not be changed. The challenge was to respect the existing elements and to work around creating an open space for living and dining, and merge some spaces to create a pleasing entrance lobby. The client’s requirements were met to ensure a creative interior space was provided without changing the villa structure of the MEP services. The designers were able to prepare the interior design following a full survey to the existing building and all services, and were in turn able meeting the budget and the timescale provided by the client. This was a fast track project. www.finalfix.ae 44 Design Et Al

THE “EVELYN” VANITY TABLE - SCULPTURAL FURNITURE FROM DKT ARTWORKS Very much born of the client’s inspiration and part of a series of specially commissioned artworks and bespoke finishes for a residential project in the Rhineland, Germany, this hand-sculpted vanity unit employed a broad range of skills to achieve it’s unique appearance. Mounted on a sturdy, stainless steel frame, the top is a sculpted vortex, cast in lead crystal and backed with burnt copper and silver leaf, creating the appearance of bubbling spring water, while the cut-away, anvil-shape permits uninhibited access to the basin. The drawers are also constructed in stainless steel, with MDF cladding finished inside with a bird’s-eye maple veneer. The exterior is overlayed with a hand sculpted skin finished in coldspray metal, as is the monocoque carcass which pulls away to enable easy access to the services. The harmoniously formed, hand-crafted drawer handles are located in the top pair of drawers, the lower ones following behind in a continuous movement when opened, reminiscent of the action of an opening fan. The cold-spray, metal finishing is echoed in the bathroom suite by a pair of adjacent shower screens, sculpted in opposing, organic forms. www.dkt.co.uk Design Et Al 45

Tim Flynn Architects Shortlisted for the Residential £5 Million Plus (Property Value) Award Tim Flynn Architects were commissioned to recapture the lost grandeur of this Grade II listed property in Mayfair which had been subdivided extensively over its lifetime. A driving factor for the clients was that the refurbishment wasn’t a replication of their homes elsewhere in the world and was true to itself and its surrounding environment. They wanted to reference the English style of the property’s past and this was achieved by opening the rooms and restoring them to their original footprint. The key aspect was to use English based manufacturers and specialists who still uphold the skills, craftsmanship and understanding of the building techniques of these period homes. Careful consideration was given to the design of materials used for the specialist cabinetry throughout the house, utilising sustainable hardwoods and veneers such as oak and mahogany. Tim Flynn Architects were also able to reinstate lost decorative mouldings for cornicing and ceiling panels as well as intricate wall panelling, inspired by the timber panelling of the great libraries of English country homes. Another important aspect was the use of both parquetry floors and straight oak boards which were supplied and installed by English craftsman, though using techniques which allow for the demands of today’s lifestyle. The result is a reinvigorated, luxurious yet functional English home thoroughly equipped to withstand the rigours of busy family life. www.timflynnarchitects.com

Final Fix shortlisted for the Gulf States – Residential £10 Million Plus (Project Value) and the Gul States - Living Space Award This is a Luxury villa located in Iraq with high end interior design using a mix of Italian brands and local elements. The client asked for a luxury, comfortable and modern design. However, he asked for a touch of traditional elements to reflect Iraq culture. The project was a big challenge in terms of logistics and location. It is located in Iraq and requires a lot of co-ordination between the site work and the interior design as well as close coordination with the Italian suppliers and the other manufacturers in Dubai. So many visits to that region took place to make sure that the interior design would be implemented without any mistakes or problems. During the work, Final Fix had to make some changes to the site condition and the coordination with the MEP and civil work. It took 3 years to complete the project with more than 40 site visits! The project was a big success, the designer managed to meet the client’s requirements and at the same time respect all the requirements of the local authorities aspects along with the site condition. The result was that the client’s requirements were met, to use Italian brands and merge with the Iraqi culture by using some wooden elements that ensured the project looks unique and one of its kind in that part of the world. www.finalfix.ae 48 Design Et Al

Weldon - The finest flooring In this classical building in Mayfair, Weldon were commissioned to supply and install flooring for 19 rooms. This extensive project, taking over 4 years to complete, features a large selection of flooring disciplines. These include timber boards, parquetry and marquetry inlaid with metals and leather. A wide variety of timbers were used including steamed oak, teak, sycamore, walnut, mahogany and wenge plus neoprene, marble and brass. Weldon researched and developed special techniques to combine solid metal inlays with beautiful wood to produce enduring and artistic floor designs. The main focus of the project involved several bespoke marquetry borders, which were inspired by the architectural elements and wall coverings of the Arts and Crafts movement. Throughout the house, individual borders remain sympathetic to their surroundings yet shine with originality, grace and innovation. A hand crafted marquetry border from the project is pictured here, with its elegant gothic arch in contrasting timbers of specially selected English white sycamore and rift sawn African wenge. It surrounds decorative parquetry on the upper floors of the house, adding a striking note to a restful and classical room. This Weldon project has been short listed in the Flooring category of The International Product Design Awards 2015. www.weldon.co.uk 50 Design Et Al

Most designers admit they love a challenge but complex, unusual spaces often threaten to compromise the integrity or impact of a concept. Working with awkward corners, sloped ceilings and narrow eaves is a demanding task but when applied correctly the right design can transform these tricky spots into a fully functioning living area. This year’s winning project for the Hotel Suite (Europe) category at the International Hotel and Property Awards is a perfect example of an architectural challenge becoming a design triumph. The Highbullen Hotel sits within a 125 acre North Devon estate offering contemporary luxury with refined style and service. To give it its full name, The Golf and Country Club has established itself as one of the UK’s finest leisure and hospitality residences but the abandoned attic area was in need of a complete rejuvenation if it was to blend seamlessly into the hotel’s otherwise perfected design. Brighton based firm Park Grove Design were tasked with transforming the vacant roof space into luxury guest accommodation.

“ Whilst the design itself is thoroughly modern with rich fabrics, bold colour injections and shiny, mirrored surfaces creating space, the room retains vital functionality. ”

The design team were commissioned develop an outstanding suite with an aesthetic which belies its unusual space. By no means a straightforward task, the final design managed to incorporate the reduced height ceilings, non-standard spaces and quirks of the room to create an entirely unique and visually stunning design. Skylight windows were installed to maximise the light and air within the space, automatically creating the ambience of a modern loft apartment. A range of contemporary technology was also implemented in order to provide the suite with an innate aura of indulgence. Guests are treated to a glass-fronted infrared sauna with in-built music system in the spa-inspired bathroom, whilst the second bedroom boasts a 3D television and Nintendo Wii. With the finest of furnishings supplied by The Jan Cavelle Furniture Company Ltd, the suite has the feel of a private residence with all the splendour of a high-end, boutique hotel. Designed to be a comfortable and private place, the suite functions as a social space in addition to its living quarters and practical purpose. Park Grove’s design incorporates a hospitality area where a range of specialist coffees and teas, refreshments and fine china are presented invitingly whilst the ubiquitous mini-bar provides a fun, alluring tone. The eaves space was expertly utilised to provide maximum storage whilst antique mirrored cabinetry, which appear free-

60 Design Et Al

standing through careful detailing such as tapered legs, disguised the sense of contrived purpose; the design makes the space feel entirely personal in a way other hotel suites could not. Another key aspect of their success was their ability to focus attention away from the sloping roof lines by installing glamorous central feature wall. In the master bedroom, the bed is designed as an installation with the headboard forming a dividing wall, though it does not reach ceiling height thus negating the sense it is dominating the space entirely. The stylish headboard is topped by large filigree table lamps acting as a screen between the bed and the adjacent open plan bathing area. The separation of the bed area from the desk and seating area allows this area a sense of self-contained purpose; an attractive prospect for guests looking for a weekend away from it all. Whilst the design itself is thoroughly modern with rich fabrics, bold colour injections and shiny, mirrored surfaces creating space, the room retains vital functionality. The second bedroom is arranged as a study however some small modifications can see it easily transformed into a double bedroom, or accommodation for two singles. This stylish versatility makes Park Grove Design’s work particularly impressive. In the suite’s extravagant bathing area, a mirror-polished free-standing bath reflects a lit white marble feature wall and marble floor. This decadent stone motif is repeated through to the suite’s shower, steam room and cloakroom areas to create a space entirely enveloped in cleansed, pure elegance. Park Grove Design took inspiration from the hotel’s beautiful countryside setting for much of the suite’s interior. The North Devon countryside inspired the colour palette throughout and earthy neutrals have been given a contemporary twist when combined with vibrant gold-coloured accents. Subtle tree themes are echoed throughout the suite in the hand-blocked wallpaper and in accessories. The overall effect is one of charming, natural beauty akin to a sanctury, secluded from the craze of city life. Furthermore these elements ensure the design maintains synergy with the hotel’s setting and brings a sense of the outdoors in. In having overcome the obvious tests proposed by such an unconventional space, Park Grove Design have surpassed the expectations of the design brief and created a luxurious suite entirely deserving of its penthouse location and the International Hotel and Property Award.

As the company founder Hall influences all aspects of the the design process and is personally invested in each collaboration.

“ Each villa is gifted with its own distinct character but the general design of the resort itself is a refined reflection of various cultures to present a worldwide appeal. ”

Their association with Club Med saw the Meriem Hall Design create a collection of opulent villas for the Club Med Maldives Resort. Club Med’s South Asia Pacific CEO Heidi Kunkel discusses the collaboration and praises Hall’s estimable success to date saying; “Meriem Hall’s latest project – Finolhu Villas – takes the cherry on the pie in her outstanding portfolio. A clever concept of modern chic design that integrates the natural surroundings, she creates the perfect harmonization of nature and luxury in the Villas. She is a renowned French architect and interior designer.” The winner of the 2015 International Hotel & Property Award for Beach Hotel, the ‘Finolhu Villas’ project expertly marries stunning interiors by Meriem Hall Design and impressive architecture by Yuji Yamazaki, Finolhu Villas expresses all the elements of a Luxury Resort in a relaxed and elegant vocabulary. First Villas et Chalets Luxury Resort New Build by Club Med, located in the beauteous Maldives, features 52 Villas with private pools. The story of this elegant design appeals to the esteemed traveller who voyages the world in search of decadence and relaxation. Each villa is gifted with its own distinct character but the general design of the resort itself is a refined reflection of various cultures to present a worldwide appeal. The concept is infused with abundant usage of tactile textures and plush surfaces for the essential feel of a premier establishment. The interweaving of different materials within the project’s design is inspired by the traditional weaving element of “Kunaa” mats made locally in the Maldives. This is one example of the deeply authentic nature

72 Design Et Al

of the concept, expertly crafted to reflect the natural wonders of the surrounding islands. One of the most embellished areas of this development is the resort’s main restaurant, the very shape of which is inspired by Fare Polynesia map. The sunken central bar takes the shape of a canoe, carved from wood with a gently sloping shape. Taking a seat at the bar has the effect of making one feel like you are sitting in a boat, about to set sail on the Indian Ocean. The base of the structure is constructed with durable, clear glass to make expert exhibit the seabed and encourage admiration for it’s beauty. Inside the restaurant the major walls are decorated and accented with a variety of art from around the world to compliment the range of cuisine on offer and bring a cultural feel to the International resort. The most notable aspects of these motifs include Sumba’s paddles from Indonesia, African Bamileke feather hats and huge image of goldfish inspired by Chinese artwork. Every element of the resort’s design has been subject to careful consideration; the trademark of Meriem Hall Design’s success. Given the long-haul flight required to reach the Maldives from most Western cities, it is of comfort to guests to know that the rooms have been exquisitely developed to be a place of relaxation with generous space and light throughout. In each villa the bed is elevated on a Japanese-style platform beneath a woven headboard and tall side mirrors which disperse light from the elegant design suspended above. Outdoor space is exploited for full effect as guests are provided with a patio which allows guests to cool off in the island breeze whilst enjoying the enviable ambience of secluded privacy. An invigorating colour palette is used to reflect the exotic flora and fauna found throughout the islands themselves and elegant furniture supplements the ‘dream home’ feeling of the villas. The use of bright colours and implementation of contemporary elements create a modern masterpiece of design and a truly impressive hospitality resort. Meriem Hall’s Design works so perfectly as it accomplished the necessary levels of luxury without compromising the fun and entertainment that Club Med is known for. An undeniably enticing ambience and impeccable understanding for vacation aspirations; this design continues to impress travellers and industry insider’s the world over. Meriem Hall has expressed her personal desire to expand her international recognition and winning this year’s award for such a stunning Beach Hotel design is surely the perfect start.

Nestled in an unrivalled location, where the Gulf of Papagayo meets the sapphire blue waters of Culebra Bay, Andaz Peninsula Papagayo Resort captures the native spirit of Costa Rica with its distinctive “Pura Vida” (pure life) philosophy. The breathtaking setting – the relaxing ocean vita edged by stunning mountain peaks – perfectly compliments the extensive interior design and architecture undertaken in order to achieve this incredible project. South American firm Zürcher Arquitectos were tasked with creating a world-class hotel complex on Costa Rica’s Andaz Peninsula which would enhance the lush natural setting with all the luxuries of modern travel. The project was chosen by industry peers and insiders as this year’s International Hotel and Property Award winner for the Hotel 50200 Rooms Award (Americas & Caribbean) Category.

“ The unique dome shaped villas offer guests unmatched levels of privacy whilst the tree-house style design and wood materials provide a sense of adventure. ”

Costa Rica is known for its peace-loving attitude, and Zürcher Arquitectos felt tapping into Mother Nature’s energy was the best way to connect the resort design with the overall ambience of the exotic country. The concept for the Andaz project is one of innovative experience; a living space for travellers to enjoy Costa Rica’s stunning natural beauty in addition to the hotel’s many indulgences. Inspired by pre-Colombian roots, Zürcher Arquitectos created a contemporary lifestyle resort which utilises the surrounding environment as the stylish inspiration as opposed to the country’s many other examples of colonial influences across the majority of its architecture. The Andaz presents a remarkable feat of design which sees a man-made development take inspiration from nature rather than engineering. The effect is one of seamless integration between internal and external elements, with water and air being used as integral aspects of the entire design. The motif establishes symmetry with the surroundings not only in aesthetics but also with careful integration of the dramatic geography providing a backdrop to the resort. The earth’s own shapes and aspects can be found within the hotel’s main buildings, spherical in structure they are formed from durable, natural materials such as wood and stone whilst the the smoothness created by the rooflines establishes a sense of equilibrium and balance to the entire complex. In terms of the size of the project itself, the design team were challenged by the site’s narrow and elongated dimensions. The mountainous, steep location also demanded extra time be taken to create a considered, workable design that would not only fulfil the artistic aspects of the brief but indeed

84 Design Et Al

the more practical, structural needs of the setting. Zürcher Arquitectos’s design features many elevated walkways and buildings which serves the aesthetic purpose of providing guests with an improved vantage point from which to enjoy Costa Rica’s immense natural beauty. This also serves the functional purpose of allowing the design team to work on flat, even surfaces rather than attempting extensive rock excavations which, whilst time consuming, also impacts negatively upon the surrounding environment. By incorporating the various raised elements into the project, the firm showed shrewd understanding of the setting and strong design skill. This is just one advantage of the hoteliers having commissioned a native company for the project, as they were able to fully embrace and preserve the natural setting to it’s best advantage. Comprising 153 deluxe rooms, the lifestyle resort is expertly designed to poetically integrate the most indulgent elements of international travel with charming indigenous culture for an authentic stay in a country rich in heritage and unspoilt nature. Themes of tropical imagery including the forest and its animals are distributed within the hotel’s interior design; emphasising the harmony between the nature’s designs and man’s own. The unique dome shaped villas offer guests unmatched levels of privacy whilst the tree-house style design and wood materials provide a sense of adventure. Within the villa’s cocoon style setting guest’s are provided with a host of luxury amenities ranging from the finest toiletries to fresh, cool linens. The hotel’s main building features an open-front design with large glass windows framing the stunning panorama of Costa Rica’s most picturesque peninsula. The complex also includes nine spa treatment rooms, three themed restaurants, and 2 cascading outdoor pools whilst its private beaches and golf course are sure to please guests looking for a range of holiday activities. Zürcher Arquitectos’s design showcases the country’s best features from the rich culture to the exotic environment. The team have expertly undertaking a potentially challenging task with stunning effect. A contemporary yet classic design, the project is testament to the architects’ keen understanding of their country’s natural riches and the hotel industry itself; a perfect example of excellence in design as recognised by their award at this year’s ceremony.

“ The design is inspiring and captivating; representing the hope and light woven into the lives of travellers and Tehranian nationals. ”

If confirmation was needed about the global appeal of the International Hotel and Property awards, this year’s shortlist showed the true extent of the competition’s reach. Stunning projects from a map’s worth of exotic and far-flung locations made this year’s awards one of the industry’s most prestigious on account of the amount of designs and work being recognised.

“This hotel and restaurant project is particularly special to our company. It is the first airport hotel in Iran, the first building which guests to my country will see when they are welcomed to Iran. As always, the design began with pen on the paper. , I was keen to utilize the light and the patterns of traditional Iranian carpets in the concept to blend new and old world traditions.

Just as the ceremony itself continues to expand and incorporate an impressive range of entries, the hospitality industry also develops year on year as the standard of design and architecture within the sector becomes more established and increasingly competitive.

“The design involved careful use of colors, as is evident in most Iranian architecture. In the old world, turquoise and ochre colors featured on the highest spots of the cities above the domes. As an extension of this custom, the restaurant design involves blue, yellow, and red hues to create a modern, multi-cultural, layered effect. The use of colours; “Rise of the Colors” reflect many aspects of society, wealthy, happiness, vibrancy and harmony within diversity. The design is inspiring and captivating; representing the hope and light woven into the lives of travellers and Tehranian nationals.”

A perfect example of this is evident in one of the International Hotel and Property Awards’ most hotly contested categories; the Restaurant Within a Hotel (Global) Award. With the calibre of design ever seeking to better itself across all aspects of the hospitality industry it takes something particularly impressive, creative and original. The winner of the 2015 award achieves all this and more. Pioneering Iranian architecture firm Tarh va Afarinesh have been awarded the prestigious accolade for their restaurant design project in Tehran’s IKIA hotel. The boutique hotel has an enviable location opposite to the central terminal of Tehran’s Imam Khomeini International Airport (IKIA). This project is the key component in an ongoing development of premier airport cities across the Middle East. Comprising of just 500 rooms the hotel has an integral feel of a private, exclusive club for the world’s most esteemed travellers and Tehran’s elite. Tarh va Afarinesh’s company director and principle architect, Shiva Aghababaei explains the scale of the project and the understanding behind the airport city concept. “As principle of this project, I would like it to be known as “Rise of the Colors”. I have always loved designing hotels; places when people come and go joyfully. They are full of movement, experience, love, and energy. It is so pleasant looking at people enjoying the spaces I have created. They use all those spaces and corner which I have designed. Many of them apprehend the love concealed in my design beyond the spaces and surfaces; and I see this in their looks, in their happiness, in their joy of drinking a cup of tea, and when they though the finished surfaces; and this is the treasure of my life.”

96 Design Et Al

Clearly a project of passion for the design team, the restaurant demonstrates a deeper level of creativity and inspiration than less personal commissions. Philosophy of unity and diversity is artfully imaged in this building whilst the design itself represents a desire to inspire future generations across the world. Each element is gifted an exclusive design based on the intended function which separates the eating area from the bar, the waiting room from the kitchen and so on; yet there remains a constant synergy, merged each space like knots of an Iranian carpet. The architect has created a journey between complexity of mysterious Iranian architecture and the transparency of modern, artistic architecture. Impressive floral motives recall designs standing still for centuries on Persian carpets and the sacred walls of mosques for a truly imposing effect. Given the level of inspiration and care taken to deliver this design, it is inspiring to see the way in which the industry responded to the finished project to see it crowned this year’s winner. Forming the entrance to the country’s many cultural and historic offerings, this design offers admirers a unique insight into the blended civilizations of old and new Iran. More than design, this project is an example of artistry, architecture and an archive to be admired for an age.

This page & Overleaf: Charlotte Conway Design, www.charlotteconwaydesign.co.uk The client liked the idea of re-creating a ski lodge feel or a Bali spa. He liked dark dramatic spaces, but needed it to be practical, as it was the only bathroom in the property, so needed it to function well, making the most of the space, despite its awkward shape with cut-off corner, and stepped back section. The Samuel Heath Country Bronze brassware, really sets off this bathroom, against the dark textured wood effect porcelain tiles, and pebble mosaics. If chrome had been used, it would have killed the calm and complimentary tones.

100 Design Et Al

By introducing the granite washbowl, solid teak unit, and pebble mosaics, I was able to combine many textures and tone, and even better, were all natural products, plus they were all either waterproof or durable, perfect for a bathroom. The use of pebbles within the shower and bath area was to create a feeling of being in the natural outdoors whilst showering. Once that bathroom door is shut and the rain shower head is on, you are transformed to another world, and the stress of the day in the busy capital city, are washed away.

The build was to be entirely monochrome and exceptionally clean lined. It was therefore critical that any solution met these parameters whilst also creating a unique space in the home. Creating a personal sanctuary space for the clients was possible due to the large size of the bathroom and it was decided that this should be located with views from the windows of the grounds. Privacy however still needed to be considered and both

shower and WC should not be overlooked. Product storage was also critical. The design is impressive with all elements such as the grey glass selected to match in with the rest of the home. Its spatial layout allows for privacy and much more from the space than had we treated it as a ‘bathroom’. The Sanctuary Space gives the client a special space for themselves which, when combined with the drinks and fridge area provides a unique solution to helping them unwind.
