Over the coming months, in the run up to The International Design & Architecture Awards, which will be held once again in London at The Hurlingham Club, 25 September 2015, we will be giving you a sneak preview of some of this year’s short-listed designers and their projects. Although we won’t be featuring projects in full until after voting has taken place, our regular Design Awards News section will enable you to see who has been short-listed for what and will perhaps whet your appetite a little, for additional project details to follow.

As you will know from previous years, voting will take place from mid August and be open for four weeks and as always the winners will be decided by you. It is hard to believe that this year The International Design & Architecture Awards will celebrate their sixth anniversary, time flies! This issue we are looking at some of the most inspirational design projects from designers and architects on a global scale; their work is as diverse as it is beautiful and inspirational. I love the broad base of design this issue, it is exciting and its spirit is quite exhilarating. Best, Joanne

Set on one of Kensington’s most exclusive garden squares, this listed mansion flat received a complete refurbishment from René Dekker Design – breathing new life into its tired interior. As recognition of its outstanding design, this Kensington-based property was a short listed project within the Interior Design Award – Residential £2.5£5 Million at the International Design & Architecture Awards 2013. Upon entering one is immediately struck by the textures and finishes which tease the senses. Exquisitely lacquered doors as smooth as glass, textured polished plaster expertly applied to expansive walls and delicate wall coverings abound throughout the interior, a common trait that runs through schemes commissioned to René Dekker.

“ Dekker worked closely with the architect and project manager to ensure that the finished product exceeded the client’s expectation yet kept English heritage agreeable. ”

18 Design Et Al

Originally one very large home, the building was transformed and subdivided into apartments many years ago when space was not the premium it is now. The apartment has been sympathetically laid out across 3,000 square feet, it has a spacious entrance hall leading in one direction to the principle rooms and in the other to the bedrooms. At the front of the residence and facing the square is the reception room with an adjoining eat in kitchen and a further study. To the rear are three bedrooms all with ensuite bathrooms, a guest cloak room and a lobby. The property was built in the 1850s and despite the subdivision, retains many of its period features. These include wellproportioned skirtings, deep elaborate cornices and the mahogany entrance door; but the key feature that gives this space such presence is undoubtedly the proportions. When René Dekker was engaged as the interior designer, the building works were well underway – the challenge was now for Dekker to add the magic. Dekker worked closely with the architect and project manager to ensure that the finished product exceeded the client’s expectation yet kept English heritage agreeable. Furnishing included items from English Georgian from Chelsea Harbour who’s pieces perfectly complemented this period home.

never a problem getting exactly the right finish” says Dekker, “as long as you work with professional people who understand the value of the finished product.” To ground the scheme and keep it in context, Dekker used heavily gilded lamps from Porta Romana which all sit squarely on a contemporary silk and wool rug. Adjoining the reception room is the family eat-in-kitchen, separated when required, by full height oak and glass panelled doors. A far more modern affair, this room is the heart of the home, again with ample space, housing an eight seater table and chairs which do not encroach in any way on the flow of the room. The study is a modest but well-proportioned room just off the hall. Panelled in dark oak, this bespoke arrangement was designed with the client’s every need in mind. An L-shaped desk with storage and file drawers runs along two sides of the room while full height narrow bookshelves occupy the third elevation. The master suite made up of a generous bright bedroom, two walk in wardrobes and an en suite bathroom. The bed is centrally located opposite the fireplace and sits elegantly within an architectural folly that had to be kept due to the listing. In order to fit a padded headboard into the niche, a series of individual panels were created and upholstered in taupe nubuck, as was the client’s original bed base. The colour palette is subtle but sophisticated in a symphony of taupes and accented with midnight blue. A beautiful linen wall covering has been hung here which softens the whole room and establishes a wonderfully calm repose. At the other end of the bedroom is the en suite bathroom which is bright and refreshing with its large window and marble cladding to the floor and walls. This is the ultimate escape with its large spa bath, walk in steam shower and double vanity.

The entrance hall is warm and inviting, and although classical in its detailing, it is refreshingly contemporary in its use of finishes. It flows off in two directions, fluidly linking the bedroom wing with the reception room through the use of a seamless pitted plaster finish on the walls and the random width and length oak planks that make up the floor throughout the apartment. Over scaled skirtings and detailed cornicing painted in crisp off white gloss are highlighted in blissful contrast to the cognac polished plaster.

When it comes to the children’s bedrooms, Dekker is somewhat of a seasoned veteran these do not disappoint. Creating a bedroom for a young 16 year old girl, who is keen to study fashion design, was a challenge to avoid predictability. The bedroom is vibrant and fresh with its use of tangerine and off white. Refined elements such as the deep buttoned ottoman and the contemporary take on a classical French bed, are juxtaposed with the almost cartoon like Fratelli Boffi desk chair, and make a great alternative scheme for a young Vivian Westwood in training. The boy’s room is also a dream blend of masculine ‘Ralph Lauren’ tones translated into a boyish scheme. Shades of charcoal, smoke and gun metal scatter cushions, not usually associated with a boy’s room, combine well with the faux fur throw and dark linen headboard.

The reception room is resplendent with its luxuriously finished walls, skilfully painted to look like aged silk. Dekker worked closely with renowned specialist decorators DKT to create this sumptuous blend of taupe, gold and pearl. The original sample was a small piece of water damaged silk that Dekker was determined to recreate on a large scale. “It’s

In an age of instant gratification, this home is a homage to subtlety. Delicate textures, restrained tones and luxurious finishes eagerly wait to be discovered, and woven into the very fabric of the design are the private treasures that make up the clients life. Understated elegance would not be a clichéd term when describing this home.

Topic Studio LLP was handpicked and selected by the developer – a joint venture between Capital Land & Sun Hung Kai Properties Ltd among to create another show unit with a unique character in a residential development on top of the most iconic shopping mall in Orchard Road. The design concept for the 2459 sq ft residential unit on the 43rd floor has a simple but challenging brief, which is to reflect the status symbol of its affluent home owner, whom had travelled widely and experienced the cosmopolitan, upscale and luxurious properties in different parts of the world.

“ The challenge for Topic Studio when conceptualising the design was how the resident feels coming home after experiencing the hype and brands, and how the atmosphere transits into an intimate abode. ”

28 Design Et Al

The Singapore-based Topic Studio was recognised for its innovative design in the International Design & Architecture Awards 2013 with the spectacular Orchard Residence. The event – held at London’s prestigious Hurlingham Club in September 2013, saw over 350 short listed projects from leading designers and architects in thirty five countries throughout the world. The challenge for Topic Studio when conceptualising the design was how the resident feels coming home after experiencing the hype and brands, and how the atmosphere transits into an intimate abode. The Orchard Residence features handpicked furnishings specifically chosen by Topic Studio. This includes an impressive Baxter Potoro marble dining table, leather chairs to the left hand side of the entrance, a silky champagne carpet, a masculine Mobilidea black leather sofa in the living area and a spectacular double tier Barovier & Toso gold blown glass chandelier. The design studio also designed a back-lit translucent Alabasta panels, which can only be seen after one enters into the living room and looked

backwards. The back-lit panels transformed the living room into a stunning interior with gold stainless steel trimmings and bronze mirror subtly embossing the Barbara Berry side table well into the night, reminding that glitter and comfort can co-exist comfortably. The choice of colour and material palettes have been carefully selected and are effective in transforming the space subtly and consciously into a relax yet luxurious home. The warm tone of the gold and bronze steel and mirror offers the glittering effects different from that of white, crystalise and coldness that often associated with a different climate and region. There are 4 bedrooms to the apartment, where Topic Studio designed a special vanity wardrobe room as an exclusive showcase for the lady owner to display the latest collection of fashion accolades, bringing the hype of the city into a very private moments. Details for comfort and luxury are thoughtfully integrated into the designer wall panels and side consoles of the other 3 bedrooms, such as a classic chandelier etched onto the bronze mirror that act as design feature and light source for the Master Bedroom, a silver and royal blue bay window seatee at Junior master bedroom and an eclectic customised study table and chair at the Guest Bedroom. Topic Studio believes in bringing personalised and bespoke services to their clients. By keeping an open mind in drawing on design inspirations, the Singapore-based design firm help create more meaningful and fulfilling interior spaces for our clients. With architecturally-trained designers, Topic Studio approach each project with a holistic view.

With its prestigious St John’s Wood postcode and stunning views across London, the Hyperion penthouse is a home with a little more than just je ne sais quois. In order to maximise the endless potential for interior design which would deliver an impact, London based design firm Sequoya were approached to turn an apartment with prime-potential into a premier residence. Seqoya is a privately owned property investment and development company, the portfolio of which continues to expand and includes some of the world’s most stylish abodes . Formed in 1999 the founders and team combined have in excess of 70 years experience in developing luxury properties. They have specialised in improving prime residential locations throughout the UK and have since advanced into the Caribbean market.

“ The design was built on the principle that nothing within the penthouse should ultimately detract from the breathtaking views and the warm luxurious interiors should work to create a relaxing home that’s a joy to live in. ”

The unusual company name has particular significance in relation to the company’s ethos. The brand took inspiration from the endangered Sequoia tree; a protected red wood species and the largest of its kind in the world. This association is intended to reflect the company’s commitment to ethical and environmentally sensitive development as they rapidly become a leading provider of exceptional ecologically responsible luxury homes. The image of a tree is entirely symbolic of the company’s current position with the themes of expansion, growth and deep rooted philosophy perfectly surmising their approach to design. Seqoya’s involvement with the Hyperion project was a typically articulate example of their finest work. The design was built on the principle that nothing within the penthouse should ultimately detract from the breathtaking views and the warm luxurious interiors should work to create a relaxing home that’s a joy to live in. With Hyperion’s architectural aspect already being of the highest standard, Seqoya were of the understanding that their main aim was one of enhancement as opposed to an entire redrafting of the apartment itself. The open and liberating ambience of the penthouse was maximised with the installation of floor to ceiling glass which not only allowed natural light to become the spotlight but emphasised Hyperion’s generous 2.9m ceiling heights. Whilst the solid and imposing nature of the glass focal point inevitably draws the eye, the heart of the Hyperion design is entirely

38 Design Et Al

welcoming, warm and homely. The vast space within is without a sense of emptiness as the whole apartment is occupied with light and life. Seqoya’s designers expertly balanced masculine and feminine influences to achieve a measured sense of elegance throughout the penthouse. The double storey ebony Macassar and bevelled mirror wall cladding produced a dramatic effect around the perla beige marble clad eliptical staircase. Neutral tones were used to supreme effect and dense fabrics softened with their placement near more tactile textures. The Ebony Macassar wall cladding was continued to the drawing room and a dark grey stained sycamore used for the joinery in the dining room which brought an equivocal sense of flow and natural synergy to the entire space. Natural stones were used throughout the design, having been hand selected by Seqoya’s team within their country of origin namely Greece, Italy, Oman and the UK; the concept of no stone being left unturned in the pursuit of perfection definitely applies here. Whereas continuity and subtle symetry was chosen to inform the apartment’s living quarters, the team desire to devise unique designs for each of the bedrooms and bathrooms, using smaller, delicate details and accessories to unify the overall motif. To achieve this, Seqoya utilised many different types of stone, wood and stain whilst ensuring the woods had a similar mood by taking time to match the colour and grain effects for each instillation. For Hyperion’s dramatic entrance the designers decided on a bold, impacting design which matched the tone of the building’s imposing exterior and affluent location. Almost to heighten the effect of this design, the remainder of the apartment was fitted in a muted, subtle palette of quiet elegance. Luxurious but chic hard materials are expertly paired with calm and sophisticated soft furnishings which compliment, as opposed to overwhelm, the apartment’s main attraction; the stunning city views. Seqoya’s design team worked tirelessly to perfect the project and ensure it would be a stand out property for decades to come. Their efforts were rewarded in their being shortlisted for the 2014 International Design and Architecture Awards in the Residential £2.5£5 Million category. Overall the balanced approach to the interior design, simple yet luxurious, was the key to the success of the project.

Archasia shortlisted for Asia-Pacific £2.5-5 Milllion Award Hong Kong based Design firm Archasia and their project Botanica Bay has been shortlisted in the Asia-Pacific Residential £2.5-5 Million (project value) Award at the 6th Annual International Design & Architecture Awards 2015. A modern Art Deco luxurious residential project creating 1920’s romantic drama. The Botanica Bay is located above Cheung Sha Beach in South Lantau Hong Kong. It is the up and coming most luxurious residential area in town. Botanica Bay stands along the Cheung Sha hillside with panoramic views of the ocean. It is the elite lifestyle offering tranquillity and privacy in beachfront living. The elegantly luxurious house is approximately 480 square meters in two stories with outdoor swimming pool and roof top spa. There are 4 en-suites bedrooms with walk-in closets. Being in the middle of the ground floor, the living room provides dramatic impact while connecting smoothly to the dining area and the library. With Hong Kong’s colonial history, the Art Deco design language is used for this project in a very modern approach. Handmade special glass motif runs through the interior, together with the contrast of premier fabric, marble and hardwood, the 1920’s romantic drama is brought to life. “Our favourite aspects of the project are the remake of vintage Art Deco motifs on glass in a modern production technique and the clean lines of modern Art Deco furniture. It is the perfect balance of Art Deco elements and modern classic details used.” www.archasia.com.hk Design Et Al 41

The Club by Michael Fiebrich Design Several architectural features were designed to speak to the iconic modern architecture of Marina Bay Sands and these became key elements of the project. Interior feature walls clad in a combination of polished, satin and matte bronze rods act as both semi private screens and wonderful textural backdrops and mimic the verticality and sparkle of the Singapore cityscape. Custom pendants reminiscent of metallic clouds, highlight the ceilings and finally, patterns taken from the structure of the modern MBS building are interpreted into carpets as well as inlay patterns to the stone flooring. The panoramic views of Singapore are a large part of the experience of the space and the architectural elements and features as well as the colours and materials we’ve chosen, speak beautifully to the surrounding skyline, blending the exterior views seamlessly with the interior. “We successfully created this type of sophisticated “skyscape” by layering various architectural elements and carefully taking colour cues from the views to extend the vistas within the space, making for a very exciting experience, day or night.” www.michaelfiebrich.com

Holiday Home by Camellia Interiors This three storey private family holiday home was built in the mid 1960s. It is situated next to, and almost built in to, a cliff face above the beach. The client’s vision was a family holiday home for very large groups of friends and family to stay, as well as hosting large parties. Internally, the clients requested the scheme to reflect the very blue sea and golden sands of the immediate environment making the fusion of indoor and outdoor elemental to the design. Maximising the amazing sea views and reconfiguring the layout to maximise the use, flow and sociability of the private property to entertain and enjoy large family group holidays. The entrance to the property sets a warm and welcoming tone with both the main and garage doors, supplied by Urban Front, presenting the contemporary nature of the overall design. To the rear of the property, the walls of glass facing the seafront act as a sun trap for the entire space - allowing for the clients to soak in the sea views. With the entire property facing the direction of the sea, the team had to consider all decisions with this in mind. The layout needed to flow, whilst still all facing in one direction and the three tiers of the property needed to follow the ‘right’ journey for the clients. With the brief in mind, the team therefore positioned the main rooms for hosting; including the kitchen, library/living area and games room on the centre floor in the heart of the home with all utilities placed to make the most of the seafront. The interesting architecture of the property meant the team had to install bespoke furniture, from suppliers such as The Sofa & Chair Company. Intelligent storage solutions were also created in order to maximise the space made available to the family during their time at the house. Overall, Camellia Interiors fulfilled the clients’ needs and wants of having a fun holiday home with a suitable scheme that reflecting its immediate surroundings. www.camelliainteriors.co.uk 44 Design Et Al

Hyatt Regency Montreal by Virserius Studio Located in the Place Des Arts in Montreal, the Hyatt Regency had always sponsored a tremendous amount of cultural activities. However, prior to the renovation, the design of the hotel was completely disconnected from its involvement in the local arts. The goal was to create an artistic journey for the guest where they could experience literature, fine arts, music and film in a subtle, sophisticated and surprising way. When the guests arrive at the hotel, the first thing they see is a map of the world lasercut out of corten steel. The steel will age over the passage of time, a reminder that everything is always in a constant state of change. As you enter the lobby on the lower level, you see that the map has been transformed into a wood planking structure. As a further extension of the theme, a topographical pattern is woven into the hand-tufted carpet. An example of the ordinary becoming extraordinary, this depicts a cartographer’s work as an artistic expression. The elevators bring the guests up to the main check-in level where they step out on a New York Blue stone floor and walk toward the check-in area. This features a cantilevered wood canopy that has been laser cut with a beautiful abstracted flower pattern that is backlit. The concierge desk was conceived as a freestanding sculpture that would break from the typical concierge desk. The guests’ passage through the hotel becomes a journey through art and storytelling which compels them to continue to explore and enjoy yet another stay. www.virseriusstudio.com 46 Design Et Al

Timeless Class Victorian Villa Bathroom by Cochrane Design

Design Et Al 55

The desire for ‘effortless elegance’ is a common aspect of many contemporary briefs and concepts but achieving it often requires endless effort on the designer’s part. When Sean Cochrane of the eponymous Cochrane Design was tasked with rejuvenating a private London residence, allround elegance was the primary goal and he was tireless in his approach to ascertaining it. As Creative Designer, Cochrane conceptualised and executed an entire project which breathed new life into a home seeking to realise its own potential. Whilst the finished article won much praise from the resident’s owner, it was the stunning bathroom design that saw Cochrane win a prestigious International Design and Architecture award in 2014. The Lady of the house had requested that his and hers dressing and bathrooms be installed within the Victorian Villa but every other aspect of the design was entrusted to Cochrane’s expertise and experience. The task saw him entirely redesign all 9’500sq ft of the property but the bathroom was where his influence truly excelled.

“ Whilst the space evokes the timeless class of an era in which bathing was a leisurely and indulgent experience, Cochrane was careful to ensure the concept remained instep with the very best of modern design. ”

As with all of his work, Cochrane approached this project with thought for the functionality and purpose of each proposed installation. The Cochrane concept is one of the industry’s finest in that it marries flawless design with practical purpose; the client is guaranteed to be able to enjoy their beautiful house not only for its visual aspect but as a working, living home. During the initial aspects of the process, the designer visited the residence several times to assess the needs and current ambience of each space. The bathroom enjoyed natural light and views across the South side of one of the cities finest green spaces, Clapham Common. The light and location were used as a foundation of the design for a room which complimented its pleasant surroundings. Mirrored double-height doors were installed to set the tone of the entire space and established the all important elegance in the instance of a guest’s entrance to the room. The muted, chic colour palette radiates luxury and indulgence, offset by the pale marble floor and clear cut crystal of the graceful chandelier hanging above; wall to floor elegance in an effortless yet impacting manner. Immediately apparent when walking into to this decadent space is the exceptional craftsmanship and mastery of materials that have been carefully selected to inform this design. Whilst the atmosphere is one of understated simplicity, it is entirely evident that every aspect of the area has been expertly sourced and the entire project skilfully undertaken. Symmetry is often the key to a balanced and visually stunning design and this bathroom epitomises the perfect use of mirrored motifs. Three sides of the design are in perfect synergy as a result of practical, fine fixtures, supplied by UK based manufacturer Lefroy Brooks, being intelligently installed in

56 Design Et Al

order to create a continuity and calm within the room. The room benefits from large sash window which frame the enviable view across the leafy common. Cochrane gave in to romance by placing the oversized marble bathtub underneath the grand glass window so as to encourage long afternoons spent appreciating the stunning scene outside whilst enjoying the bath’s luxurious depth. Light is used to great effect throughout the design and enhanced by the positioning of three large mirrors above the washbasins to maximise the room’s natural exposure to sunlight. The reflective trio is seamlessly inset into the panelling so as not to overwhelm the understated grace of the space. The level of natural light within the room emphasises the luminous quality of the marble which embellishes the counter, splash back, bath, shower and floor; an impressive example of a classic material, Carrara marble, being applied in a practical and beautiful way and emphasises the depth of the design to full effect. Whilst the space evokes the timeless class of an era in which bathing was a leisurely and indulgent experience, Cochrane was careful to ensure the concept remained instep with the very best of modern design. The deep buttoned circular chair in the centre of the room adds an essential sphere of colour to the bathroom’s calming palette whilst the tactile nature of the fabric prevents the solid nature of the marble making the room feel cold or harsh by introducing a softer texture. Whether to reflect after a long day’s work or to pamper one’s self, the seat typifies the luxury of its surroundings whilst providing the classic design with a key component of contemporary. style It is a perfect example of the way in which a small detail can entirely inform a design and bring a new dimension to a space with conventional purpose. In addition to his overseeing the project and adhering to the client’s design requests, Sean Cochrane commissioned and personally designed the cabinetry, stonework and furniture in their entirety. Such involvement and desire to ensure each element of the concept was consummate and of the highest standard is typical of a designer whom seeks to make every room a vision of interior artistry. The exacting standards applied throughout this project are Cochrane Design’s trademark and this bathroom is a perfect representation of the multi-layered approach to the designer’s relationship to his client and their property’s needs. The bathroom unites luxury and functionality with stunning effect and the various elements involved in its creation are testament to an approach which gives measured consideration to each individual detail. The design and execution of this bathroom evokes permanence and quality, making this a bathroom with inexhaustible style and substance.

ABOVE: Sheraton Skyline, Heathrow Submitted by: Nous Design

When asked to redesign the interiors of one of Manhattan’s most iconic boutique hotels, Meyer Davis designers sought to reimagine the space through the lens of a contemporary theater aesthetic. Constructed in 1928 as part of an extensive building and expansion drive in the Times Square theater district, the Paramount Hotel was intended to appeal to visitors coming to New York for its vibrant night life. At the core of the Paramount’s transformation is the redesign of the hotel lobby. The design of the lobby builds on the drama and glamour of Lamb’s original vision and further enhances it with modern touches and saturated, muted tones to imbue the room with a cozy, sexy ambiance that will delight visitors and New Yorkers alike.

Nous Design took the opportunity to bring back this glorious period by highlighting the fantastic opulent furniture and fittings which accentuate the triple height in the entrance hall area leading onto a unique and stylish, central tropical swimming pool. A key aspect of the project is the electric mix of furniture and materials which Nous Design used to compliment the existing strong 1970s Architecture. This custom-designed, boutique hotel combines functionality, modern details, traditional materials and references. It becomes an interactive art showcase and full of exciting details that are enhanced by lighting: dramatic, bold, memorable, interactive and sleek. The urban modern boutique hotel lobby is in itself a sculptural piece of art... a “jewel box” with a striking street level appeal as well as a dramatic stage set on the inside.

The team’s inspiration was the Art Deco theme of the historic district, but their approach was interpretive, creating a modern interior with Art Deco references, either as iconic elements or as art. The program required that the two buildings be transformed into a boutique lifestyle hotel, attracting a younger clientele. The project’s Ocean Drive location is the heart of the most vibrant and active part of South Beach, with a direct view of the ocean, a perfect location for the target market.

Light and shade are used to expert effect, as the external aspect of the property benefits from natural sunlight and enviable exposure. An imposing glass structure was created for the entrance and runs the entire length of the property in order to allow the maximum amount of natural light into each room. The tall glass edifice takes influence and shape from a traditional Thai monastery, so as to allow the design to blend seamlessly with its ethnic surroundings. The interior elements of the property are influenced by contemporary Thai culture, popular with wealthy tourists and professional travellers. Clean, sharp lines inform the kitchen and bathing areas whilst soft furnishings encourage relaxation and comfort throughout. This motif is particularly apparent in the garden design were comfortable seating is placed within a tiled water feature; encouraging reflection and appreciation for the beauty of nature itself. In keeping with the company’s flawless approach to their collaborations, only the finest materials were sourced for the design. All of the tiles, wood and textiles were of the highest international quality which not only satisfied the impeccable standards of the villa’s owner but The Beaumont Partnership’s personal expectations for their work.
