A Winners‘ Issue is always a colourful and vibrant issue and non more so perhaps than this issue. Just a couple of months ago, you voted in your thousands, tens of thousands in fact, for interior design schemes, hotels, restaurants and bars in our two key design awards The International Design & Architecture Awards and The International Hotel & Property Awards. In this issue, we have selected some of the winning projects for each awards to show you a little more of these fascinating design schemes and really allow you to step into the project. The projects are as varied as they are enchanting and exciting, ranging from residential projects in Hong Kong and Beijing, to Houston USA and London, Mallorca to Thailand. Cultural, geographical and, of course,

environmental factors are varied between the projects and therefore their style and scope is broad from a design perspective, which I think brings a broad and diverse feel to this issue. The hotel design projects read like a bucket list for any aspiring traveller who wants to travel in luxury and include projects from Caribbean to South Beach, Manilla to Mallorca, Bangladesh to London. We have not forgotten the essential components of any and every design scheme this month, as award winning furniture, lighting, fabric and flooring designers talk exclusively this month about their inspiration, ideas, design directions for the future and award winning designs. Meanwhile we are busy here putting together one of my favourite issues, our annual hard back book The World’s Leading Design Names 2017. Is it really almost another New Year ? Until next month Joanne

Situated in a typical Hong Kong industrial building, this 6000-square foot space has been transformed into a two-level apartment where the lower level provides a private hideaway for parties and the upper level is an impressive vacation home for the owners. Exclusively designed by House of Beast, The Playhouse was a winning project at the International Design & Architecture Awards 2016. The property claimed the Residential £2.5-5M (Project Value) Award. Recreated the industrial loft, the materials were carefully sourced worldwide. Aged Italian brick tiles, blacken steel I-beams and cement panels throughout complete the retro rustic atmosphere of a New York-style loft. Concrete panel LCDA was used throughout the apartment – a wall cladding made from lightweight concrete. To ensure their product was installed and used properly LCDA made a visit from France to monitor the product on site. Pleasantly surprised and satisfied with the craftsmanship and installation works, LCDA approved of the results. The visit also led to LCDA suggesting the use of a protective sealant, instead of a raw finish without treatment, to prevent stains on the wall.

“ The exclusive entertainment area is a portal into a city style loft apartment with an eclectic mix of industrial, tribal and Moroccan influences. ”

The lower level of the apartment is based on the idea of a private member’s club setting providing a casual party environment where guests can meet, play, socialise, dine and lounge in style. The exclusive entertainment area is a portal into a city style loft apartment with an eclectic mix of industrial, tribal and Moroccan influences. The dining area incorporates various blends of styles and a rich colour palette creating an authentic space suited for social dining and features an immense reclaimed wood ceiling, with various combinations of tin ceiling panel above the custom-made communal dining table. A professional kitchen was also incorporated into the layout. Offering a whole new experience of a traditional Japanese cuisine, the teppanyaki counter is assembled with vibrant shades of marble and onyx to create recurrent geometric patterns with an eclectic mix of furniture by moroso, stellar works, and de sede. This area epitomizes the chic luxury and fun feel of the Playhouse and is the highlight of the project; a real piece of eye candy for the guests. Seamlessly extending the spatial experience of the apartment, the unisex powder room incorporates shared sinks with the toilets privately enclosed behind a large patterned mural. Offering a convertible space for lounging and party events the living area has a panoramic view of the vibrant city and beach beyond.

18 Design Et Al

The subtly masculine bar area is reminiscent of a 1950s Italian bar with exquisite detail and inspiring ambience. The use of browngrey marble and brass accents provide a modern retro look and a stark contrast with the brass anodized metal mesh details of the industrial-style staircase. The upper level has a more exclusively selfindulgent feel, where guests can experience fine dining, rest, relax, lounge and rest their heads overnight. The interaction and flow of the two levels allows The Playhouse to host two separate events at the same time. Equally creative, albeit a more relaxing atmosphere, the modern vintage theme continues through the upper level, where the interior embodies an eclectic mix of brass and concrete panelled ceilings. Elegant, but not decadent, the master suite is designed for modern luxury living with sense of privacy and openness. The bedroom is softly tailored with a rich texture of materials and features a custom designed bed with a gallery-like steel frame to support the massive wood headboard and floating bedside drawers. The en suite is a luxuriously spacious retreat where the owners can soothe their minds and indulge their senses. The cosy and laid back living area continues the modern vintage industrial theme and is a space where guests can relax and spend quality time enjoying their favourite music or movie. Whilst the striking geometric pattern embedded within the wood planks of the dining area creates a unique fine dining experience. The guest bedrooms are a reinterpretation of a Tatami room concept using a nontraditional approach with vibrant colours and textured patterns. In contrast the bathrooms are fitted with a combination of materials including subway tiles, brass and marble to create character and evoke bespoke ambiance. The project was completed within nine months, with the majority of the materials used in the apartment having been sourced internationally. A lot of the materials required testing before final installation. For example, to produce the bronze suspended pipe shelving, the final product is a combination of locally and internationally sourced parts. To ensure the final outcome was satisfactory and to maintain the cost of the project many of these material applications required time under a tight deadline. A challenge which House of Beast accepted and achieved. Reflecting on the project, the House of Beast team said “Not only did we work on a project that would satisfy our client’s needs, but we were also able to surpass everyone’s expectations in its functionality and aesthetic beauty.”

The complete renovation of this 1980’s residence located in Houston, Texas has transformed the property into a sophisticated and stylish family home. Exclusively designed by Laura U Interior Design, Willowick was a winning project at the International Design & Architecture Awards 2016. The property claimed the Regeneration Award at the event on 2nd September in London. The homeowners wanted a sophisticated style while maintaining much of the original structure of the house. Not afraid of dramatic, bold colours, each room is dynamic and rich in colour and texture while still being a liveable space for a family. Some areas of the home were fully renovated while others were cosmetically altered. Laura U Interior Design worked with the architect, builder and homeowner throughout the entire process to develop a cohesive design.

“ The homeowners wanted a sophisticated style while maintaining much of the original structure of the house. Not afraid of dramatic, bold colours, each room is dynamic and rich in colour and texture... ”

Due the extensive remodel, careful protection was needed to prevent damage to the existing areas. While most of the interior spaces stayed intact, other areas were taken down to the studs to create functional spaces for this growing family. This included electrical rewire and redesign of the bar, wine room, kitchen utility/mud room, master bedroom and bathroom. Important architectural elements were maintained to conserve the original design of the home. The large scale family kitchen is the heart of this home. It is grounded with honed Thassos and Crema Marfil marble floors and rich blue-black custom cabinetry. The design team searched tirelessly for the perfect Calacatta Gold marble backsplash and counters. The custom metal vent hood is a combination of brushed stainless and polished stainless which is echoed in the polished nickel lanterns and plumbing fittings. This area, once a fully enclosed kitchen, was opened up to include the original den for a spacious layout. New metal doors and windows brighten the space which gave the team the opportunity to paint the cabinets an unexpected blue-black hue. The original footprint of the bathroom was very compartmentalised. The clients desired an open plan space with separate his and hers areas. Glamorous and refined, the redesigned his and hers master bath blends beautiful mouldings with stunning

slabs of Calacatta Borghini marble to create the perfect retreat. The cabinetry moulding details are echoed in the marble details in the shower. Her bathroom is light and bright while his is warm and masculine. From the substantial freestanding tub to the custom shower and elegant fittings, the entire room is seamless. The Great Room is a favourite of the home - this room originally served as a grand library and trophy room and was encased in red mahogany walls from floor to ceiling. The designers worked with a local wood floor company to refinish the entire space. The process included stripping the original stain and bleaching the wood to achieve an updated greige stain on the walls and ceiling beams. Other details include the home’s original handrail, comprised of brass and iron, which was modified to meet today’s codes and standards. The marble clad and antique mirror fireplace surround was a welcomed relief to the stained walls. The black panelled gallery was designed as a dramatic surprise for guests as they approached this grand entertainment space. The floor, which includes Thassos Marble, Crema Marfil marble and Absolute Black granite, draws the eye to the handsomely appointed bar which is finished with ebonized stained cabinetry. This residence is rich in colour and texture and luxurious in appointments, whilst being a stylish and comfortable family home. Laura U Interior Design is a leading design firm known for its bold aesthetic and polished, liveable interiors. Founded by celebrated interior designer, Laura Umansky, the company’s renowned “Classically Current” style incorporates clean lines with striking details to bridge the gap between high design and practical living. Speaking about the ID&A Awards Laura said “Interior Design is an art form that is recognised worldwide. The ID&A awards is one of the few events that brings artists and designers together from a myriad of countries and cultures to celebrate the very best and most innovative designs.” On receiving the award at the event in September Laura said “The award is a direct result of the creative vision and hard work our team put into this project and we are so proud of this recognition. The Principal Designer, and I poured our hearts into this home.”

Amongst all the hustle and bustle of the London borough of Southwark, Valentine Place is a hidden sanctuary. Immersed in the rich history of its surrounding area, the former flour mill and bakery was developed into a collection of homes nestled around a secluded private garden in the cultural epicentre of the Capital. The developers requested the expertise of leading interior designers, Honky, to create a luxuriously finished show apartment that would offer potential buyers a glimpse of the chic lifestyle on offer at the development. Rewarded at the International Design & Architecture Awards 2016, Honky claimed the Residential £1–2.5million (property value) Award with their exclusively designed show apartment.

“ ...a truly unique, striking and contemporary statement; something Honky continually strives to bring to each project. ”

The brief was to create an edgy urban interior that would play on the surrounding area and reflect the romantic notion of “valentines.” With this in mind Honky used a blend of classical style and industrial detailed accents. Modern and industrial materials and techniques were perfectly balanced to ensure a tranquil and serene interior. The romantic name of the development is reflected in the soft colour palette and tactile textures used throughout the apartment. Located on the first floor of the new development, the two bedroom show apartment has been expertly dressed in a contemporary yet elegant style. The apartment is located in the retained façade of the former Maltina bakery building and boasts large feature windows allowing plenty of natural light to fill the rooms. In the Master bedroom a concrete plastered pitted wall added an industrial element to the scheme, which gave an urban backdrop for the soft bed linen creating a clever contrast between the soft and hard elements. In contrast to this treatment the second bedroom was more playful, a paint effect was used on all walls giving an edgy feel to the bedroom while being softened by the lightweight sheers and upholstered headboard and bed. To bring character and heritage into the scheme Honky used Anaglypta wallpaper in the reception room along with jewel coloured details, velvets and tactile fabric, combined with gold accessories to create an elegant contemporary apartment. The result was a truly unique, striking and contemporary statement; something Honky continually strives to bring to each project. Honky is a multi-disciplinary, award winning architectural and interior design practice

34 Design Et Al

based in London. Founded by Christopher Dezille in 2001, Honky’s creative team is committed to providing a service with the capability to offer exceptional design solutions. Honky provides a full design service, tailored to the project and the individual client’s needs. Whether furnishing a private residence, development specification or show home, the use of bespoke wall features, soft finishes and lighting ensures that the desired result can be achieved without compromise; the best possible design solution is individually created for every project. Speaking with design et al about the Valentine Place show apartment, Chris Dezille said “the design was a success because we embraced the building’s architecture and original façade. Working with tactile fabrics and interesting textures allowed us to create strong blend of hard and soft elements.” Honky believe that the design process is a dialogue; an active, two-way conversation between designers and clients. From the initial meeting, they strive to develop and nurture the relationship, ensuring that communication is clear, regular and understood by both parties. They aim to deliver on time, and on budget, while continuing to push design boundaries. The developers of Valentine Place were delighted with the finished show apartment describing it as “truly special.” Designed with discerning potential buyers in mind it displays contemporary elegance in its styling, offering a glimpse into the lifestyle on offer at Valentine Place. Honky has worked with most of the UK’s leading house builders and developers, creating show properties and marketing environments proven to increase sales. Chris’ career in interior design extends over 25 years. Whilst the majority of his work is focused in Central London, he has undertaken private and commercial projects throughout the UK and internationally, including projects in Montenegro, Marbella, Cannes and The Channel Islands. Creativity, professional expertise, subtle refinements and ultimate perfection are the key elements of all of his designs. Speaking about the Design Awards Chris said “As a design company the awards are always at the back of our minds and something we strive to enter on a yearly basis. It is always a great way to stay up to date with others in the industry and see what is happening around the world in other design practices. The awards night itself is great fun and a fantastic networking opportunity.”

This prestigious development located beside the 4th ring road in Beijing, demanded a show suite that fully embraced the timeless elegance and grace of classical European style. Archival details of Romanticism and Classical elements have been instructive in creating the rebirth of these courtly manor houses. Rewarded at the International Design & Architecture Awards 2016, David Chang Design Associates claimed the Residential £5million plus (project value) Award for their impeccably designed show suite, Eminence Mansion. This project is unlike any other that DCDA has taken on before. The 460 square meter Beijing apartment has a ceiling height of 3.3 meters throughout, giving the residence a continuing atmosphere of majesty. This is a true example of ultimate luxury at its finest. Every square foot of this project demonstrates complete beauty from floor to ceiling as well as intricate luxurious touches throughout. The property comprises 5 bedrooms each with en suites, a den, living room, dining room, powder room, nanny’s bedroom with en suite and a large kitchen with a centre island as a breakfast area.

“ Sensuously rich materials evoking, and indeed incorporating semi precious jewels have been combined for flooring patterns celebrating historical grandeur. ”

The living room is 8 meters in width and 5.6 meters in depth with sliding doors to a large balcony overlooking a garden paradise. The ceiling has been deftly crafted to hold an ornate crystal chandelier, which hangs above the circular inlaid coffee table. Gold accents are everywhere, juxtaposing the statement lapis lazuli coloured cabinet at the end of the room. A similar chandelier with matching drop crystals resides above the formal dining table, establishing continuity through the rooms. The modernist artwork adorning the walls brings the classical to meet the present day, while the colours are reflected in the joyful floral centerpiece on the dining table. The master bedroom is a sizeable 8 square meters with added beneficial feature of a walk-in closet. The room features wood panelled walls and timeless, unique furniture pieces that reinvent a space not just for sleeping, but for enjoying. Sensuously rich materials evoking, and indeed incorporating semi precious jewels have been combined for flooring patterns celebrating historical grandeur. These patterns are then quietly reflected in ceiling patterns to create a majestic yet dignified ambiance. A soft and calming colour palette was introduced to evoke a regal serenity. Unapologetically affluent furnishings were appropriated from the finest suppliers, including Provasi, one of the world leaders in luxury furniture and furnishings, to substantiate this exalted residence. The entirety of finishes, furnishings, materials and details were carefully considered in the delicacy of lighting selection to ensure an emotion of tranquillity throughout the home to further enhance the purchasing experience of this prestigious development.

Chang spoke to us about his role “I believe that you could liken the role of an Interior Designer to that of a movie director. With our Clients as the producers, we take their personal vision, be it classical, modern, contemporary, art deco or neoclassic and synthesize this with all the other actors from artisans, suppliers and trades, to create a bespoke design that narrates their personal story.” In describing his own intricate style he explains “Designers should be like water; easily flowing and versatile enough to fit within any container. Bespoke designs cannot be mass produced if they are to be informed by the Clients’ individual tastes, needs and influences. This continuous dexterity of inspirations is the flame that keeps the passion for design burning” Deeply influenced by both eastern and western culture, founder of David Chang Interior Design Associates, draws inspiration from diverse history and culture. Over time, this has transformed his work into the embodiment of global vitality and otherworldly artistry. To endow each design with a unique signature that maintains its integral importance, David Chang Interior Design Associates place emphasis on functionality and harmonious comfort, but never sacrifice the enjoyment of revelling in unsurpassed extravagance. David Chang was born in Taipei, the capital of Taiwan. Educated both in the United States and Canada, he majored in Interior Design at California State University and also received an honorary interior design degree at Kwantlen University in Vancouver, Canada, which is where his company originated in 1998. They later established offices in Guangzhou and Beijing in 2006 to provide space planning, interior design and soft furnishings services for major real estate developers in China. They are exceptionally well received by the industry having completed projects all over Asia and the United States, and have been setting the design standards for development and design collection since their birth. Chang is currently studying green building and sustainability at postgraduate level at Harvard University. The company have a design team of more than 90 senior designers and an experienced project management team. Project areas encompass villas, apartments, retail spaces, clubhouses, and hotels for developers as well as private client projects. Their innovative designs have won numerous honorary awards. Speaking about the awards Chang told design et al “As a pinnacle of prestige within the design community, the International Design and Architecture Awards have become an honour and privilege to be granted. The award is both a benefit in marketing for firms with future projects and a personal honour of recognition in a field of amazingly talented peers”.

Lighting Scheme Sean Cochrane Creative Director, Cochrane Design Tell us a little about your background in design (education, experience, etc) In all honesty and without wanting to sound arrogant, I walked into the field with no experience nor education in the art of interior design. I didn’t realise I wanted to follow a path in interior design until I had purchased my flat, completely renovated it, sold it, bought another property and moved on from there! I developed very quickly the skill set that was necessary to build my portfolio of properties simply through constantly moving forward. How would you describe your personal interior design style? A seamless blend of traditional and modern style. Where does your design inspiration come from? Living abroad has always been such a great inspiration for me – having lived in Milan, Cape Town and Paris to name a few, a city’s architecture will always inspire me. I draw most of my inspiration from my love of all things beautiful and a city’s atmosphere will always be paramount to me (I think that is apparent in my designs). Inspiration thus comes from my past, with a new fusion of modern design and international architecture. In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense? A conscious use of all space and design within a property will no doubt play a huge part in the future of design – design is moving towards beautiful functionality, leaving every single area with a clear, yet flexible, purpose. Name key themes to consider when approaching design in 2016 and beyond. Art Deco – the blend of contemporary and art deco style blends so easily. Classic, timeless style. Sculptural, bold shape and form. If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to product design, what would it be? A product must perform to the absolute best of its capabilities. How important are The International Product Design Awards as recognition of talent and achievement? The platform of the International Product Design Awards is paramount in highlighting what is currently cutting edge and recognised as true talent, what

will be the basis off of which plays the future of design and for publicity. The Awards are also something which young designers must aspire towards to truly push forward the world of design. What projects are you currently working on? Cochrane Design is currently working on a fair few properties. One project in Liverpool, which is to be the most expensive apartment property in the city; a trio of apartments so bespoke that they have has been fitted with bombproof glass. A set of penthouse offices on Saville Row and a huge coastal town development are also in the works. What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months? A huge expansion of Cochrane Design’s portfolio is currently underway, launching several new projects this month alone, and a push into both the commercial and hotel sector is progressing – a complex in Albania being one. Final thoughts – tell us a little more about yourself... Your most treasured possession? My phone and long list of contacts! Your favourite hotel / restaurant / bar? Cochrane Design’s luxury Ibizan Hotel Es Vive, which recently won a 5* Award for ‘Best Hotel Interior Spain’; The Wolseley Restaurant; The Connaught Bar. Your favourite book / film / song? My favourite book is The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran; my favourite film is Layer Cake; my favourite song is the theme to The Piano. Your favourite way to spend an afternoon? An ideal afternoon would be spent constantly moving forward. I can’t stop trying to progress my company, my projects and portfolio. If you weren’t a designer, what would you be? I relish being able to plan spaces, be it a solitary room in a complex or a huge 9000 sq ft London mansion. Engaging with spaces means that everything can be directed to my own image of design. I would love to be able to create a whole space to my image, down to every last-minute detail, so probably a townplanner with the ability to start a town from scratch. A town-creator, maybe!

Chelsea Townhouse by Cochrane Design For this project, Cochrane were looking to transform an originally tired property into a wonderfully elegant and luxurious home, complete with the latest advances in lighting. The designers pushed boundaries and were innovative with the lighting scheme, experimenting with techniques that hadn’t been done before. The overall concept was to use dimmable LED lights in order to create ‘mood’ lighting. The client wished for a fully automated, multi-layered lighting scheme with warm, dimmable, LED lights throughout. Every cupboard was to be individually lit with invisible recessed lighting, built into the bespoke joinery. The layered lighting scheme in the kitchen emphasizes the sophisticated craftsmanship. A great deal of time was spent ensure that every light source was a dimmable LED and the advantage of this central control approach is that the keypads and their relevant buttons can be used to recall any lighting scene. These changeable lights are an extremely important feature throughout the house, ensuring that the lighting is always suited to any mood. The diversity of the Lighting Scheme is most prominent in the ground floor entrance hall with the flight of stairs leading to the first floor. This lighting is favoured because there are so many intricate layers to the lighting scheme in this area- from the recessed LED strip lights in the stairs to the antique pendant and bespoke crystal chandelier. Every area is considered and each layer allows for individual illumination whilst not interrupting the overall theme. All of the lighting compliments the furnishings to create a warm but sophisticated feel. www.cochranedesign.com

Chair Tina Nicole Principal Designer, Nathan Anthony Furniture Tell us a little about your background in design (education, experience, etc) An Associate of Arts Degree from the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising, a Bachelor’s Degree from UCLA and a Juris Doctorate from Loyola Law School. Always a lover of textiles, forms and fashion, I worked in sales and then as a window dresser for iconic retail brands Colours de Benetton and Polo Ralph Lauren. This gave me a feel for combining the right fabrics to the right frame, and for learning the art of merchandising. I use all of my education and experience at Nathan Anthony Furniture whether it’s building the administrative infrastructure, designing product or marketing. My diverse education and experience has been invaluable. How would you describe your personal interior design style? Hollywood Regency meets Italian contemporary. I love wide open spaces with tall architectural ceilings and minimalist forms. Every piece should have a purpose. Art and furniture must have dialogue. White with black are my go-to palette with pops of either soothing pastels or crisp primary colours. I like to emphasize a 360-degree view

of our products using unique sewing techniques, materials and shapes that bring visual interest. Where does your design inspiration come from? I am drawn to beautiful things and have an unyielding curiosity. Travelling abroad or around the U.S. four times a year, I indulge in all that is around me - architecture, street art, shop windows, museums, art openings, cafes, theatre and concerts. Because design is art and artists push societal norms, this broadens my view of what design is and how it’s evolving…It’s best to see all kinds of expressions of art in so many different genres. In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense? With today’s large, open spaces in living areas, you can expect ingress and egress from different parts of the room. This architectural trend has prompted space planning and interior designers to bring furnishings away from walls and into the center of rooms. It’s imperative to establish visual interest from every vantage point in contemporary spaces. The backs and sides of furnishings are as now as much the focal point of the room as the nexus of the seating area is. That’s a welcome challenge for furniture designers like me because it’s a license to get creative. Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2016 and beyond. - Organic shapes - Artisnal connection - Tactile textures - Functionality - Comfortable Luxury If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to product design, what would it be? A diverse education complimented by apprenticeships is a really good balance for creative people. This way you learn the history and conventions of your discipline while using the tools of today in the practical environment. Study abroad is valuable too because it expands your ideas. Lastly, study art and artists, both new and old… they are society’s challengers.

Elan by Nathan Anthony Inspired by the Dutch “De Stijl” artistic movement of the early 20th century, the Elan chair cleverly combines the visual composition of vertical and horizontal intersecting lines on a rounded chair frame. The fabric used features imagery reminiscent of the 1960s Pop art movement with cubist influences. The designer - Tina Nicole has pushed the envelope with this design, using an over stitching technique to intensify the look of an ordinary graphic. The Elan chair features a unique, asymmetrically faceted fabric application across its back with a geometric barrel-like chair frame to soften and add visual interest to the room it sits within. The swivel feature means one can see its beautiful faceted shape from every angle and also allows for effortless socialising. The bold and irreverent chair has a sculptural quality which is reminiscent of the side of a cut crystal in its raw form. www.nathananthonyfurniture.com

In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense? Design is moving in a direction where designers have to offer a real value to the world, be it the value of minimalism, or the value of reviving a lost heritage. The Wing Sofa by Shosha Kamal 4000 years ago, ancient Egyptians created the science of Product Design. They excelled at designing everything and specifically furniture. However this great art was born and died with their golden age. Until today there are almost no attempts to develop that great heritage of Art and Design. Unfortunately it remains trapped in museums and media documentaries. The Wing Sofa is the first attempt to resurrect the Ancient Egyptian Design Style, creating the first of its kind, contemporary Pharaonic design in style. Inspired by the great Wadjet, the Cobra Goddess patron and protector of the whole Lower Egypt, symbolizing eternal protection and peace. The Wing Sofa was created using ancient Egyptian techniques in materials and design; covered wood, copper paint, pure white leather and teal velvet upholstery. Bringing the marvellous ancient Egyptian design back to life and blending the greatness of Pharaonic designs with ultra modern minimalism, this is a timeless piece suitable for everyday use in residential and commercial spaces. The choice of materials was crucial to communicate the luxury yet casualness of the piece, hence the wood painted in copper for the back, and pure white leather for the seat. www.shoshakamal.com

Wallcovering Rupert Bevan Founder / Owner / CEO, Rupert Bevan Ltd

Nautilus Wall Panelling in Zinc and Brass This wall finish was inspired by Jules Verne’s esteemed classic novel ‘Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea’ and the idea of transforming a corridor into a more engaging interior space by creating the atmosphere of a Vintage/Victorian submarine. Each large panel of patinated zinc is surrounded by a thick trim in brass with studded detailing. These details enhance the nautical feel of the theme. The panels are of variable size and configuration to adapt to the irregularities of the interior architecture. The brief from interior designer Lucy Eadie was to create a wall finish which evoked the feeling of being aboard Captain Nemo’s Nautilus, but which also conveyed a luxurious aesthetic. Due to the specific architecture of the corridor space and the fitted joinery to accommodate, it was necessary to consider the panel layout very carefully and integrate this into the design itself. It was also important to create a finish that enhanced the light rather than absorbed it, as the basement apartment in Kensington has a limited amount of daylight filtering in. Achieving the right degree of patination was essential to give it the vintage feel required. The wallcovering manages to completely transform a corridor - which would otherwise be a ‘dead space’; a room which exists purely for the function of traversing through it – into one of the most exciting interiors in the property. It makes visiting each different room a journey in itself, reminiscent of the adventures that inspired it. As an architectural finish it works very well as it is suitable for cladding doors, architraves and fitted shelving. The semi-reflective sheen on the zinc enhances light. The panels can be large to allow for hanging artwork, or smaller to make the decorative aspect of the brass edging more effective. It is also versatile enough work as cladding and decoration for the fitted cabinetry built into the walls, which keeps the finish consistent. www.rupertbevan.com

Tell us a little about your background in design (education, experience, etc) My background is primarily in craftsmanship rather than design. I learned a vast amount from the apprenticeship I did in gilding and restoration, which taught me how to use an endless variety of materials and techniques. In terms of design my background is in having worked with a bewildering array of antique furniture from many different eras; from 17th century elm commodes to 20th century brasswork. How would you describe your personal interior design style? Eclectic. I love objects and display, so given the chance I would probably choose to live in a cabinet of curiosities! I like objects that have a history or tell a story, especially if they also have a function. Which explains my collection of kitchen paraphernalia… Where does your design inspiration come from? I think it comes from traipsing around museums. I love the V&A, and in my youth I used to spend most of my time at weekends lurching from one gallery and exhibition to another. In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense? Design is so dynamic and varied that I don’t think the overall direction it is moving in is predetermined. What we do know is that trends and fashions are revived and reinvented, things often come back around. In terms of more short term direction I think we are coming to the end of the endless 1950’s vintage retro vibe and heading towards more daring, lavish interiors. I think this will take inspiration from the Baroque era and from the glamour of the 1920’s and 1970’s. Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2016 and beyond. - Reflective surfaces such as mirrored finishes and metalwork. - Textured and tactile finishes, such as fretted metalwork. - Raw timbers and more natural materials. - Luxury items such as drinks cabinets and games tables. - Bespoke, sensitively designed kitchens. If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to product design, what would it be? Keep the surfaces as natural as possible so they can be easily maintained and restored. This means the piece can

achieve a timelessness and longevity which it might not have if the only consideration is what it will look like when newly made. How important are The International Product Design Awards as recognition of talent and achievement? I think they are hugely important, as they provide a platform for designers and creators to celebrate their work and share it with a huge audience within the industry, hopefully allowing them to understand and appreciate the work of the designers more. What projects are you currently working on? Most of the projects I work on are obviously top secret! But I can tell you that I have recently completed a very beautiful water gilded harlequin gesso wall finish for an attic room at a private members club, which ended up looking very glamorous, for the very brilliant Rifat Ozbek. I also took on a project in Copenhagen including some beautiful mother of pearl and gesso dressing room doors, and I am currently making two quite different compendium games tables. What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months? I am currently working on improving and enlarging my workshops in Shropshire to increase capacity and allow me to develop more finishes in different media. I am also in the process of creating a new, semi-bespoke collection that will be more “ready to wear” and will be called RB Designed. I am continuing to dream up and experiment with exciting new finishes in our glass workshop. Final thoughts; tell us a little more about yourself... Your most treasured possession? My Series 2A Landrover, which looks very “lived in” but works beautifully! I also have an endless collection of lead soldiers. Your favourite hotel / restaurant / bar? I love the Turkish restaurant Fez Mangal on Ladbroke Grove, which is great for both eating and taking away. Your favourite book / film / song? My favourite film is ‘Something Wild’ which I totally recommend if you haven’t seen it! It’s funny and edgy. If you weren’t a designer, what would you be? A chef!e?

Bespoke Cabinetry Jeffrey Douglas Principal, Douglas Design Studio Tell us a little about your background (education, experience, etc) I’m artistic at heart and have always drawn and painted. I am particular, and think in a very detailed fashion. I’m interested in people and derive inspiration from them, so I believe the most unique ideas come from collaboration rather than isolation. This interest also makes me an effective listener and negotiator with architects, builders and tradespeople. I love helping my clients realize a home that is uniquely their own and an expression of who they are. How would you describe your own personal style? I take pleasure in creating interiors that accurately express the homeowners own lifestyle, while creating the most functional environment for their needs. In both furniture and interior design I reference past cultures and styles, while juxtaposing a freshness and timelessness.

Final thoughts – tell us a little more about yourself. Your most treasured possession? My sketchbooks Your favourite hotel / restaurant / bar? I love places like Hotel Cotton House in Barcelona because it’s of the place and unique at the same time. If you weren’t a designer, what would you be? An artist. In high school I had to make a choice between fine art and applied art. Anything else interesting? I write poetry. I am also passionate about helping youth in need and improving mental health understanding in our society.

Where does your inspiration come from? Perhaps it’s banal to say this, but I see inspiration everywhere. It’s about looking at the world with an artist’s eye until you see into things, you feel them and become aware of their origins. Travelling is my favourite way to refresh. In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense? I’m seeing a strong technological influence in design solutions. With complex modelling programs and increasing accessibility of 3D printing, how we conceive is changing. Some worry about the end of art and craft, but I don’t think this will ever happen. You simply can’t replace the beauty of something well-made by hand. Name five key themes to consider when approaching property development in 2016 and beyond. - Understanding local lifestyle and needs - Bespoke unique solutions - Sustainability of materials - Superlative service and attention to detail - Flexibility If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to development projects, what would it be? I would like more developers to consider the cultural impact of their work. When its cheaply and quickly built, it says something about the culture. Sometimes you need to make something with lasting importance. How important are The International Design and Architecture Awards as recognition of talent and achievement? International celebration of design achievements is incredibly important to establish and share appreciation and understanding of a valuable point of view. What projects are you currently working on? Several luxury custom built homes and condominiums in Toronto and New York. What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months? I see working internationally on high quality hotels and spas as an extension of the residential work I love. I am keenly interested in culture and how design is a reflector of our individuality. I will continue to expand the furniture line I began last year to encompass a wider range of needs, styles, eras and cultures.

Damson by Douglas Design Studio Inspired by the Art Deco period, the idea was to create a piece that has no standard parts while using authentic, solid materials. Details are of the essence: custom bronze hinges, custom bronze drawer glides, and a sophisticated tubular system supporting glass shelving. Made from architectural bronze and finished with a pearlescent lacquer, the Damson credenza adds luxury to any space. Constructed using architectural bronze, the Damson credenza is a structural piece, using square rods to support the case. The tubes of the rods are then used to hang leather-lined drawers that pull out from the ends of the unit. Bronze panels open to reveal glass shelving accessible from both the front and back A 95 degree hinge was developed for the centre door, while a touch latch opener and mitered edge makes for seamless functioning. A high-gloss, pearlized lacquer was selected to contrast the architectural bronze. In addition to its glamorous aesthetic and functional design, Damson offers a very surprising amount of storage. www.douglasdesignstudio.com

Based in an island paradise in the Bahamas, the iconic Hartford Wing of the One & Only Ocean Club Hotel has been entirely reimagined by New York based hospitality design firm Jeffrey Beers International with enhancements that further raise the bar on ultra-luxury in the Caribbean. Rewarded at the International Hotel & Property Awards 2016, Jeffrey Beers International claimed the Hotel Suite Award for The Americas with this striking redesign.

“ Although an extensive redevelopment, Jeffrey Beers has maintained the colonial flavor of the original site, and all of the charm that has kept guests returning year after year while simultaneously elevating the overall experience. ”

During the multi-million dollar, five-month renovation, guest rooms and suites in the historic Hartford Wing were expanded and given a complete redesign. Combining classical architecture with romantic colonial elements, and elegant interiors, the new rooms were developed to create the same sense of glamour, drama and sophistication found in the rest of the resort. Allowing the new design to flow seamlessly with the other existing elements on the property maintained the nostalgic feel that has charmed guests for years. The 52 newly renovated rooms showcase 5 different layouts, each one embellished with luxurious textures and clean lines with its own private outdoor space to create a serene haven for the guest to relax and enjoy. Once the private estate of A&P heir Huntington Hartford II the project has revitalized the historic wing. Designer Jeffrey Beers was inspired by the past and location of the property. “Our desire was to ensure that the spirit of the resort, which was once a private estate, retained its rich history while also providing a fresh palette with hues taken from the natural surroundings,” said Beers. The new, enlarged rooms are decorated with all the colours which immediately conjure the essence of The Bahamas. From cerulean blues and aquamarine of the ocean to dark corals from the reefs, and the bleached white of Bahamian sand. The rooms are appointed with custom designed furnishings and fabrics. With headboards of walnut embossed with leather and ceilings of walnut planks with white wood beams, the interiors give the air of a ship’s cabin. Hanging from cast metal ropes, nautical-feeling bedside pendant lights

provide a warming glow adding to the cosy ambience. The bathrooms in breezy neutrals of ivory and cream have been transformed with the addition of Whitewood, as well as Bianco Dolomiti marble, a separate bath and rain shower, and double vanities. Pops of colour reflected from the main bedroom enlivens the contemporary stone. For Beers, the key to the design was balancing luxury and the island lifestyle. “The guest rooms in the Hartford Wing are very tailored and well detailed yet layer in the resort essence of ease and comfort,” he says. The amenities continue outdoors in the Hartford Courtyard which was also completely redesigned allowing for a luxurious, relaxing lounge. Now featuring a graphic floor pattern in dark limestone and light travertine and complemented by neutral furnishings, this European-inspired outdoor living area creates a sense of effortless glamour and sophistication with a flare of drama, all without sacrificing the welcoming warmth that comes naturally to this traditional beach destination. To complete the look, flashes of persimmon accent the lush greenery and magenta bougainvillea trestles. The focal point is a central fountain, shimmering in iridescent blue and white mosaic tiles and ringed with lanterns. Although an extensive redevelopment, Jeffrey Beers has maintained the colonial flavor of the original site, and all of the charm that has kept guests returning year after year while simultaneously elevating the overall experience. The extensive renovation, showcases a commitment to detail and quality and highlights the magnificent views and surroundings of the resort. The completely redesigned Hartford Wing blends the glamorous ambience and exclusivity of the grand colonial manor in the most alluring beach front hideaway in the Caribbean. “One&Only Ocean Club is a resort with a celebrated past, and the Hartford Wing’s enhancements are a subtle nod to the resort’s historic spirit and glamour,” says One & Only Ocean Club General Manager John Conway.

“ The environment of 1 Hotel South Beach is casual, easy, and warm. Immersion is instant: while it is an environment that is entirely new, it feels incredibly familiar and palatable. ”

Located on Miami’s well known Collins Avenue and stretching a full city block with 600 feet of Atlantic Ocean beachfront is luxury eco-resort, 1 Hotel South Beach. Globally recognised design studio Meyer Davis undertook the complete reconfiguration and renovation of the former 1968 building redefining luxury with this ecoconscious hotel. 1 Hotel South Beach was recognised at the International Hotel & Property Awards 2016 in September, when Meyer Davis claimed the Beach Hotel Award for this sensational transformation. Meyer Davis were charged with transforming the lower eight stories of the existing building, for the hotel, while the upper eight became apartments. The hotel occupancy is roughly equal to what it had been but that is about all that remains. The new look pays homage to the natural landscape of South Florida. The property offers unparalleled views of the Atlantic Ocean, Miami’s natural paradise Biscayne Bay and Downtown Miami’s everexpanding skyline. Throughout the 426-room hotel, the celebration of elemental nature is evident, from the graceful twist of driftwood furnishings to the ever-present song of the ocean and the abundance of living, natural material that permeates the surrounding area. “From the second floor down, we gutted everything, even reconfiguring the street presence,” Davis says. Guests now pull up beneath a porte cochere in reclaimed redwood. To the side, a massive numeral one, sculpted from pink coral stone, rises from a reflecting pool. Guests are welcomed with 3,000 feet of living wall wrapped around its exterior, featuring 11,000 local tropical plant varieties. Living greenery breathes within the hotel throughout guest areas, from the instant they approach until the moment they enter their room. In a celebration of nature and the locales surrounding the properties, and indeed a respect for the conservation of it,

this hotel brings the outside into the heart of the indoors. An expansive whitewashed, sun-drenched lobby, composed of natural wood and comfortable canvas sofas, is appropriately elegant. Materials for construction and furnishings are regional, reclaimed, or repurposed whenever possible, making this project literally a ‘green’ success. The interior design team’s approach to selecting materials was one of the most important aspects of design. Each decision aimed to use materials in the most honest and natural way. Concrete looks and feels like concrete; wood looks and feels like wood; steel looks and feels like steel. These materials are carefully combined and thoughtfully contrasted through texture and colour. The cooperation and tension found in material relations reflect how they are experienced in the natural world. Reflecting this narrative throughout the hotel creates an immediate and lasting impact. The environment of 1 Hotel South Beach is casual, easy, and warm. Immersion is instant: while it is an environment that is entirely new, it feels incredibly familiar and palatable. Earthy qualities in building materials are heightened, sharpened, and exaggerated to draw attention to them. For sustainability as well as a desired look and feel, finishes aren’t perfectly finished, finely sanded, or precisely mitred. Material decisions were made that preserved the scale of the existing space. The design team took time to determine which materials were appropriate to use at what dimension to strike the perfect balance architecturally. Averaging about 200 square-metres, some of the largest rooms in South Beach are found at this resort. Executed beautifully by design firm Meyer Davis, they immediately put you in Zen mode. A soothing colour palette of wood, sand, and ocean tones, are a riff on the real versions seen through the windows. The designers saved Colorado Beetle Kill pine to create headboards and beds are plush and pretty on raised platforms. Meyer Davis specified organic bed linens, hemp

mattresses, and clothes hangers molded from recycled paper. Bedside note pads have disappeared in favour of chalkboards. The equally spacious and inviting bathrooms have Calcutta marble soaking tubs, rainfall showers with peek-a-boo windows and trough sinks and what look like floorboards are actually porcelain tile. The dining room, downstairs, is furnished with beachy wicker chairs and teak-topped tables. Above, a rugged-luxe lounge features Mexican-style chairs with saddle-leather seats and floor lamps with bases made from mangrove roots. The property features four swimming pools, three outlets from James Beard, awardwinning chef Tom Colicchio, who made his Miami debut at the hotel, 57 cabanas and daybeds, an 18,000 square foot spa, wellness and fitness center, and over 100,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor space. The 15 square-metre main pool, on an elevated plaza, puts the ocean at mesmerising eye level whilst lounging on the redesigned pool deck covered in Ipe wood from the property’s original boardwalk. The new property was designed from existing buildings that were overhauled to adhere to the brand’s standards for less energy consumption and more conservation. Every aspect has been updated, such as the installing state-of-the-art energy efficient heating and cooling systems, motion sensors and using LED illumination to reduce electrical demands and heat build-up from lighting. Low V.O.C. paints, adhesives, sealants and finishes were used and Triple Clear Water filters where installed in all taps, sinks and showers, while low-flow plumbing fixtures conserve water. Each venue within the hotel is punctuated: from the reception’s modern jungle, to a beautiful jewel-like coral stone lobby bar, to an installation of unique woven vessels in a public seating area. Designed to every inch, this property was a labour of love from all angles, and a groundbreaking accomplishment in luxury hospitality.

Located in the Philippines premier leisure and entertainment resort, Crown Towers Manila is an exclusive and luxurious hotel at City of Dreams Manila—an exhilarating hub of international retail, world-class dining and globally renowned nightclubs and entertainment within Parañaque’s Entertainment City. Exclusively designed by internationally renowned Michael Fiebrich Design, Crown Towers Manila was a winning project at the International Hotel & Property Awards 2016. The property claimed the Hotel Over 200 Rooms Award for Asia-Pacific. The hotel has seen the brand new development of 500 luxury rooms, suites, and villas, as well as the Silks Restaurant, bar, lobby and spa. It has become a shining example of the Michael Fiebrich design teams’ excellence. Located within the Bayshore development, this project was an exciting opportunity to revitalise the renowned Crown Resort.

“ The guest room space planning and amenities were all executed with luxurious comfort and convenience in mind and cater to the guests every desire and whim...”

Strong architectural interiors and bold graphic statements are part of Crown Resort’s image. The design infused these ideas with the regional elements and materials of the Philippines by working with local manufacturers and artisans; combining brand recognition with a strong sense of place. Dramatic bronze screens and marble inlay floors provide bold patterns that act as a backdrop for the lobby’s vibrant art installations, while double height silk draperies break up lines and add texture. Opulent lighting from Ricardo Lighting washes the site with warmth; custom designed chandeliers provide soft curves and form. Combining architectural influences, streaks of light along the ceiling and a rush of either bold blue or warming muted reds, the design team have created sensual, enlivened spaces. Impressively large beds in guest rooms are framed from above with inset ceiling lighting fixtures that maintain a masculine character. The entire team at Michael Fiebrich Design is trained architecturally, making their approach to interior design very 3-dimensional and tactile, with strong structural qualities. The Hotel’s guest rooms, suites and villas follow suit with strong but simple architectural statements acting as a canvas for bold colour, pattern accents and a palette of rich materials. The guest room space planning and amenities were all executed with luxurious comfort and convenience in mind and cater to the guests every desire and whim. “My favourite aspect of this entire project is how the hotel’s Crystal Villas follow suit with the strong but simple architectural statements of the Crown Towers Resort.

They act as a hugely exciting canvas for bold colour, exotic pattern accents and a palette of rich materials,” said Michael Fiebrich. Fiebrich relates his personal style to the sense of excitement or serenity and relaxation. He told design et al “The basic tenets of great design always apply to our work- timelessness, elegance, comfort, functionality and an understanding of service operations- but we try to ensure that our projects also have a sense of escapism. We feel that great design should always make the mind travel, whether it’s to a place of relaxation and serenity or excitement and activity or anything in between. As long as this mantra is followed, the designs we provide have less to do with a personal style and more to do with the clients goals and objectives. I want my work to always inspire pleasure, comfort, and an experience beyond the obvious.” “As Designers, we take inspiration from everything around us from nature to fashion to architecture, but the wonderful opportunity to travel extensively and experience different cultures and countries first-hand for our projects has provided our team with the most creative inspiration.” said Fiebrich. Located in the most exclusive and soughtafter neighbourhood of the city of Palma de Mallorca, this impressive villa in the popular Son Vida estate has been transformed from a blank canvas to an inviting holiday retreat. Rewarded at the International Hotel & Property Awards 2016, Knox Design claimed the Living Space Award for Europe with this magnificent Mallorcan villa. With breathtaking views and stunning architecture the villa needed décor that would bring comfort and warmth to its modern lines. The brief was to create a luxury holiday home to be enjoyed with family and friends. To set the mood and compliment the ambiance Justine Knox of Knox Design chose a spectacular one-of–a kind aluminium art panel by Alex Turco to grace the entrance hall. This became the colour palette throughout the living areas both inside and out. The entrance was accented with a modern white Italian glass chandelier and classic 1929 Barcelona chairs.

“ To enable the owners of the villa to envisage the design and layout of each room from the blank canvas, Knox Design’s approach was to create mood boards, further illustrated by individual mockups of every aspect as the project evolved. ”

In the living room a panoramic glass wall opens up the space providing plenty of natural light and showcases the impressive views of the Bay beyond. The tables and drinks cabinet – a true objet d’art, are a fusion of recycled drift wood, polished white lacquer and steel. Alongside these are bespoke white leather sofas and complemented by splashes of blue and indigo with soft furnishings from Christian Lacroix Fabrics. The combination of Venetian plaster, designer wall coverings, Stepevi bespoke rugs and light oak wooden floors add texture to an otherwise serene and geometric space. The open plan kitchen and dining area are elegantly simple with natural stone worktops and terrace floors. The clean lines and neutral tones give the space a warm and contemporary feel. The protagonist of the living areas is undoubtedly the incomparable view of the Bay of Palma in the distance. Work on the villa encompassed not just the interior, but the transformation of the outdoor terrace with its panoramic views of the Bay. Knox Design sought to make the outdoor areas a platform, from which to take in the magnificence below, choosing white and blue comfortable, yet stylish seating areas surrounding the swimming pool. Under the porch, a white long table ready for lazy and pleasurable Mediterranean meals. “Mallorca is all about making the most of the fantastic climate so as a designer I always do my best to create a flow between the interior and exterior living areas,” said Justine.

The view of the garden provided the inspiration for the guest bedroom and ensuite bathroom. The owners of the villa wanted to give their guests a taste of summer and a complete contrast to the often-heavy interiors of the UK. A cool and calm summery feeling was created with soft furnishings against a white and pale lime green canvas. Clever hidden lighting helps to create a soft glow and maintain the peaceful mood. Soft Italian white leather was used for the bed and seating, cool chrome and white lacquered oak furniture with some fun decorative elements completed the look. The result is an original, fresh, tranquil yet vibrant space with a singular mark of Mediterranean contemporary design. Justine referred to the design as eclectic: a fusion of styles which enhance each other. “In the end it is all about creating the client’s dream not mine! The décor always has to suit the property and the lifestyle of the owners.” She added “This villa was a joy to work on and the clients were very open to all of my suggestions. The end result speaks for itself”. To enable the owners of the villa to envisage the design and layout of each room from the blank canvas, Knox Design’s approach was to create mood boards, further illustrated by individual mock-ups of every aspect as the project evolved. This fantastic solution enabled Justine to demonstrate her ideas and concepts clearly, allowing the clients to enjoy a collaborative process and providing them with a turnkey solution for their holiday home. Knox Design are based on the beautiful island of Mallorca and cater specifically to busy people who want a no-hassle interior design solution. The dedicated team offers a wealth of talent and experience in Interior Design, Home Styling, Commercial Design and Project Management. Undertaking projects of any size, from major redevelopments to an individual room, from construction to final decoration, the team work in close collaboration with private clients, luxury estate agents and property developers both in Mallorca and internationally. Speaking of her success at the ID&A Awards 2016, Justine Knox said “Winning this award was the culmination of a great deal of hard work on behalf of myself and my brilliant team. The Son Vida villa was a rather unique project. It’s a modern, geometric structure that required a sense of comfort and warmth; and I think we succeeded in making it a wonderful place for family and friends to enjoy for years to come. We’re delighted with the title of award winner for Living Spaces Europe 2016, and we’re going to continue doing what we know and do best – creating beautiful, liveable homes for people on Mallorca.”

Inside the prestigious Berkeley Hotel in London, the luxuriously refurbished Chelsea Suites are spacious, contemporary and exquisitely elegant. They have a laidback and confident style, rooted in English craftsmanship, that perfectly conjures up the name ‘Chelsea’. Rewarded at the International Hotel & Property Awards 2016, Robert Angell claimed the Hotel Suite Award for Europe for the divinely designed suites. The design brief was for an interconnecting bedroom so that it can be made into a two bedroom suite but also have the flexibility to sell it as a single one bed suite with a lounge. The Suite facilities needed to ensure the guests every whim are at hand whether that be an individual staying for a couple of nights on business or family staying at the hotel for their summer holiday. There must be a luxurious bathroom and areas within the suite to relax, watch TV, work and allow families to be able to have multiple areas in which this can be realised. The suite should be contemporary, residential in style and also be durable as it is a hotel after all.

“ With a refined palette of pale mints and yellows the suites’ design has been informed by Robert Angell’s artistic creativity and keen eye for detail. ”

Throughout the creative process, Angell worked closely with British craftsmen and artisans, maintaining a true sense of British design and heritage throughout the hotel’s ongoing refurbishment. With a refined palette of pale mints and yellows the suites’ design has been informed by Robert Angell’s artistic creativity and keen eye for detail. From subtle and warm colour scheme, edge trims and contrast piping, to the varied finishes, textures, corner details and hidden drawers, the layers of detail and expert craftsmanship are integral to the designs of these luxurious new suites. With bespoke craftsmanship by Ben Whistler and Dunmore, and attention to detail at the heart of the design all elements have been considered to ensure guests receive the highest levels of comfort and luxury. “When designing suites such as these one really has to understand how affluent travellers searching for that ultimate experience come to expect a suite that allows them to relax, work, indulge and rest in a relatively small space. As designers we look to bring elements of how guests use a suite much the same as they would use their own home,” says Angell. There is a sense of arrival into the suite with a large square lobby featuring a personalised larder mini bar framed in a beautiful hand stitched leather surround and elegantly lit. The floor throughout is beautiful bespoke hardwood timber herringbone flooring. Room interiors are lined with textured wallpaper made up of delicate strips of paper which form a cross-hatched patina, creating an extra level of subtle detail. The designers played with various finishes to create perfect harmony – using rough

materials such as Jesmonite on the organic shaped console legs creating texture against more glossier finishes, textures and patterns in fabrics create a relaxed atmosphere. The bedrooms have stunningly modern and comfortable hand-crafted four poster beds, made from brushed timber and contrasting lacquer. Additionally the stitched leather headboards and side leather detailing on the bed base ensure guests are welcomed to bed by soft, warm leather as opposed to hard, cold bed frames. Sophisticated grey eucalyptus veneered marble night stands with low-level illumination frame the bed. Across the room, a flat-screen television is located above soft curving limed and lacquered timber desks with nickel detailing. The wardrobes have leather lined drawers, shaped glass fronts with nickel trims to each internal section, to create the utmost ease for hotel guests both during their stay and upon departure ensuring nothing is forgotten. The luxurious sense of space is a key feature to the suite interiors, heightened by floor to ceiling sliding doors which separate the suite bedroom and living room and provide an added element of privacy. The living room is decorated with a curved sofa which wraps around a circular limed timber table with nickel sabots. A finely crafted wooden desk with a leather inlay top and compartment drawers for i-pads, pens and papers sits nestled nearby in a study space niche with book shelves lit adding a layer of detail. The room exudes elegance and is exquisite in every detail. Expansive soft cream marble bathrooms featuring luxuriously large baths, walk in showers and double wash hand basins with enough space each side for products to be placed, make for the perfect haven for guests to relax and unwind. The Guests reaction to the rooms has been one of joy and a feeling they really have arrived when they walk in. So much so that guests specifically ask when these suites are available. Robert Angell Design International designed five new Chelsea Suites enhancing the hotel’s contemporary style and understated elegance. Exceeding expectations the design team created a residential vibe with a lightness of touch that works from a hotel standpoint too. Speaking about the ID&A Awards, Robert Angell said “It’s a true Global awards event and like no other. It attracts the best of the best to celebrate the fabulous work which we all strive to create and produce better and better interior solutions for all of our amazing clients and their guests to enjoy.”
