For me, spring is the most exciting of seasons and now in April we are well into the season. It is of course a new beginning for the earth, the world, revitalised nature awakens once again and breathes new life into our homes and gardens. It is also a time when home re-modelling and renovation feature highly on our lists. In my home, spring indicates the season of exterior and interior work and we are well underway with this at present; from fences and gates to windows and roofs. The structural work and practical necessities are inevitable, but consequently turn my attention to the

more pleasant purchasing of components for the interior scheme. Fresh licks of paint, new floors and walls, a refresh of furnishing schemes and lighting to accentuate are on the list for this season. New life, new beginnings and a new sense of self, my home will have it. Whether we are designers or developers, architects or just discerning home owners we are always open to ideas and inspiration and I do hope that the pages of this month’s issue will provide just that. With schemes as diverse as their global locations, there are elements for us all to consider, ponder and perhaps to implement. Until next month... happy spring transformations! Regards, Joanne

Awards News Soraa With its ultimate Savile Row address, refurbishing and modernising the historical 18th-century Gieves & Hawkes flagship store was challenging. The original architecture of the building needed to be respected, whilst at the same time reflect the history of the brand, which has spanned over a century. The store’s lighting not only illuminates the beautiful merchandise, but it also showcases the impressive architectural aspects of the building. Gieves & Hawkes was keen to respect the history and context of the original building without sacrificing a brilliant, contemporary lighting design. Soraa’s lamps were the perfect fit for Gieves & Hawkes’s unique shop because of their function, versatility and quality. The colour quality, in particular, is such that every shade of a garment is visible in its truest form, which is really remarkable from a merchandising perspective. The lamps also create a dramatic environment by highlighting the stone flooring and timber surfaces of the showroom with minimal glare. If the store wants to host an event, the mood of the space can be significantly altered by using the lamps’ dimming feature. The colour rendering gives an accurate light whether it is set at a low level setting for evening events or a daylight setting for normal retail hours. The change in moods running throughout the store was imperative in the overall scheme. Soraa’s unique GaN on GaN technology allows its LEDs to operate at currents that are more than five times higher than LEDs built on other materials. This means a lot of light comes from a very small source resulting in a narrow beam of light from one source. This elegant LED design provides crisp object definition with a single shadow and bright, uniform colours and whites—perfect for making clothes, furniture and architectural elements look their best.

Lohja by Cameron Design House This contemporary chandelier is inspired by the tranquil lakes of Lohja, Finland. Exploring peace, space and balance, the Lohja brings clarity to high ceilinged rooms and large working areas. The seamless rolled rings alternate between an external and internal facing LED lighting configuration, dispersing light through hundreds of hand assembled diffusers, emitting 360 degrees of ambient tones. Geometry and simplicity are combined in this piece to result in an interesting and balanced sculptural form which looks different from every angle with the changing linear juxtapositions. It can feature up to 12 tiers with various ring profiles. The rings range from 40300cm in diameter with a fully adjustable drop height and angle and lights can be placed internally or externally on these. They are available in Aluminium (comes as standard for a powder coated finish), Copper, Chrome, Nickel, Brass, Bronze and Gold Plated (24 Carat). The paint finishes are available in powder coated matte/gloss and the metal finishes: polished, brushed, antiqued or burnished. The LED colour variants make these pieces all the more bespoke with warm white, bright white, super bright white lights available. The chandelier beckons its own atmosphere of grace and elegance, the result of a design philosophy of simplicity through complexity.

Etched Brass Cocktail Cabinet by Rupert Bevan This project was to specifically create a piece that celebrated the glitz and glamour of the 1920’s cocktail party era, something which evoked those feelings of opulence and extravagance the way Fitzgerald’s ‘The Great Gatsby’ manages to do so well. The “Art Deco” scene was a large part of the inspiration, and it is also based on the design created for the Soho House group some years ago which has been widely admired. The decorative geometric design on the exterior façade was chosen from a traditional Japanese woodblock painting, etching the design onto the brass panels to create the pattern then allowing it to naturally patinate. The interior is in dark stained walnut and features bespoke brass storage rails for glasses, a mirror clad bar/serving area with lighting and adjustable shelves, an integrated wine rack, brass clad drawers and fitted fridge and freezer. Rupert Bevan created this cocktail cabinet as an in-house design. The design team really wanted to showcase something that would reveal the extent of their skills as designers, makers and finishers. Bevan thought a luxury drinks cabinet would be appropriate as a permanent installation for the showroom and part of their intention in the design was to explore the potential of a completely new surface finish, as well as a chance to include the bespoke features and details that make it an exceptional piece.

Son Vida by Knox Design A magnificent villa with breathtaking views and stunning architecture that needed the décor to bring comfort and warmth to its modern lines. The brief was to create a luxury holiday home to enjoy with family and friends. To set the mood and compliment the ambiance Justine of Knox Design chose a spectacular one-of-a kind aluminium art panel by Alex Turco to grace the entrance hall. This became the colour palette for all the other living spaces. Splashes of blue and indigo on white and glass, clean lines of chrome and steel, a white and reclaimed wood drinks cabinet that is a true objet d’art with two Modigliani-like faces atop. The Venetian plaster, wall coverings and bespoke rugs added texture to an otherwise serene and geometric space.

BALWYN Residence by Massimo Speroni MASSIMO layers whimsy and tradition in his comfortable and bespoke interiors. He has an eye for sophisticated symmetry, combining order with bursts of colour and optimism. Consistent throughout his work is a sense of glamour, drawing inspiration from both classical and contemporary references skilfully merged in new and original contexts. His approach to interior design is also largely based on the apposition of contrasts.

The protagonist of the living areas is undoubtedly the incomparable view of the bay of Palma in the distance. Knox Design sought to make the outdoor areas a platform, from which to take in the magnificence below, choosing white and blue comfortable, yet stylish seating areas surrounding the swimming pool. Under the porch, a white long table ready for lazy and pleasurable Mediterranean meals.

MASSIMO Interiors was recently asked to redecorate a master bedroom and walk-in wardrobe for a young family of four. When the team first walked into this large bedroom they knew the potential it could have. The team turned a cold and uninviting space, to a beautiful, tailored bedroom. The original empty unused space was utilised to its full potential. The bedroom is a fascinating mix of contemporary style mixed with a more traditional look giving this space a charming finish. The clients wanted this bedroom to be calm and serene room where they could relax and feel at home. The free flowing design used throughout the room gives it a very inviting feel and makes the room more appealing to the clients. The size of the bedroom meant many pieces of furniture could be used to give the bedroom a cohesive and ultimately, welcoming room for the home owners.

Elan Chair by Nathan Anthony What happens when two designers fall head over heels in love with the work they do together in a Southern California furniture factory? The answer is Nathan Anthony’s beautiful, customizable furnishings that are certain to make any space glow. Influenced by their travels abroad, company co-founders Tina Nicole and Khai Mai want to share their unique appetite for edgy design and beautiful textiles. With an almost unlimited choice of fabric colours, patterns, and textures to choose from, Nathan Anthony upholstered products can be as original as each client. Custom sizes, trims and treatments, and special details like crystal accents from Swarovski® Elements can be incorporated into the design. One of their newest inspirations by the Dutch “De Stijl” artistic movement of the early 20th century, the Elan chair cleverly combines the visual composition of vertical and horizontal intersecting lines on a rounded chair frame. The fabric used, features imagery reminiscent of the 1960s Pop art movement with cubist influences. The designer, Tina Nicole, has pushed the envelope with this design, using an over stitching technique to intensify the look of an ordinary graphic. The Elan chair features a unique, asymmetrically faceted fabric application across its back with a geometric barrel like chair frame to soften and add visual interest to the room it sits within . The swivel feature means one can see its beautiful faceted shape from every angle and also allows for effortless socialising . The bold and irreverent chair has a sculptural quality which is reminiscent of the side of a cut crystal in its raw form.

To celebrate New England architecture’s history, the objective of CNEHH was to use historically motivated architecture to create a new home that looks as though it has stood the test of time, rooted in its site and appropriate in scale with its surroundings. Dating back to the late 1800s, gambrel cottages have dotted the shoreline of New England and over time, as families expanded and prospered, the cottages grew and accessory buildings were added to create a larger program including boathouses, carriage houses, outbuildings, etc. Summertime brings two of life’s sweetest pleasures—spending time with friends and family. Not having to choose between the two is a luxury. The home-owner’s, a couple with three grown children, wanted multiple outdoor living spaces to entertain guests, so they can host their friends on one side of the house while their children can host their friends on the other side. There are a total of four outdoor spaces on the first floor allowing groups of all sizes to have unique and separate experiences, all while enjoying the same beautiful ocean views.

“ The past is echoed through the use of traditional materials including weathered cedar shingles, stone veneered foundations and chimneys, and New England bluestone terraces and fieldstone walls. ”

On the North side of the house is a covered porch, with an outdoor fireplace, connected to a party room perfect for hosting larger dinner and cocktail parties. The disappearing Nano doors between the porch and the party room create an open flow of space from indoor to outdoor ideal for entertaining. The design team incorporated a lot of windows in the party room to make it feel like it was a porch that became enclosed over time, while the open air porch is truly open air. Well-designed outdoor spaces are viewed as an extension of the home so brick and beadboard run from the covered porch into the party room to create a seamless transition. The covered porch proceeds to step down onto an intimate bluestone terrace area, in lieu of grass, creating a three tiered series of spaces to entertain within one significant outdoor living area. On the Southern side of the house and you will find the grown children entertaining their friends in the larger pool area. The pool area was strategically tucked away to create an intimate experience separate from other possible co-existing forms of entertaining and to preserve privacy from passing boat traffic in Edgartown Harbor; however, the area maintains beautiful ocean views and aligns perfectly with the sun. Guests can spend all day outside with the amenities this area offers including the pool, hot tub, outdoor grille, dining area, and a pool cabana featuring an indoor fireplace. Bluestone is carried from the pool terrace into the pool cabana to create another indoor/outdoor experience. While the major entertaining spaces foster more significant social activity, family members and guests alike can take a break in the shade. The central covered porch offers a more relaxing, quiet setting with rocking chairs perfect for smaller groups or summer reading. Adjacent, there is a screened-in porch providing the opportunity to enjoy the

30 Design Et Al

outside during inclement weather. One of the design teams favourite key aspects of this project is how they recreated the “implied history” and hierarchical scale for newly constructed structures. The main house established the dominant element, the carriage house wing served as the secondary element, and the cabana as the third element. Hidden from view while facing the front façade, the carriage house is connected to the main home by a breezeway which implies that the two buildings were once independent from each other. The gambrel architecture was a natural choice along the coastline, partly due to the 26’ height restriction but also allows the maximum square footage on the second floor while maintaining a lower building height thus reducing the potential over massing in scale. Uniformly designed in the gambrel shingle style, the grand seaside residence is intimate in scale and is organized by the implied symmetry that celebrates the long views to the water. The past is echoed through the use of traditional materials including weathered cedar shingles, stone veneered foundations and chimneys, and New England bluestone terraces and fieldstone walls. Equally as significant are the additions of a widow’s walk and over sailing eaves despite the advancements in technology. Both architectural elements were previously considered a fundamental element in New England architecture along the coast; widow’s walks were installed to provide a sea captain’s wife with an elevated lookout to watch for the return of her husband and oversailing eaves were crucial during foul weather prior to the invention of gutters. Today, they serve to aesthetically enhance the architectural language and to pay tribute to celebrate the past. Similarly, despite the significant advancements in energy efficiency over the past few decades, the windows are historically accurate with muntins separating the double panes, adorned with a traditional framework of mullions, and thick historic sills. The interior finishes recall the grand shingle style homes of the turn of the last century, yet live in a more casual way as people wish to celebrate island life today. This is evidenced particularly by the extensive use of full height millwork paneling and antique oak reclaimed flooring and paneling. Architectural elements – beadboard, traditional paneling, strongly cased door frames, and wide cased wooden beams were used to introduce human scale. The water-facing façade of the home is bathed in unobscured daylight, which is made possible by fully glazed walls offering breathtaking views to the water. As the sun sets, chandeliers and pendants provide intimate and warm light, while grounding the primary gathering spaces. All of the elements of a formal historic home are present however they are dressed down to convey a quiet sense of luxury with an effortless and natural sophistication.

A Permanent Home for an Entrepreneurial Couple Giuliana & Bill Rancic Chicago Home by Lonni Paul

“ The goal was to design a traditional Chicago home that would be a casual and comfortable living environment for a young hip family. ”

The homeowners wanted a traditional home with an updated and fresh vibe and having worked with the couple before Lonni Paul really understood their aesthetic. It was a collaborative process between the designer and the client and the great experience is shown in the final product. The designer used a lot of architectural details like wall panelling and heavy mouldings to achieve the look. Lonni Paul also used a blue colour scheme in most of the rooms because not only is it the clients’ favourite colour but because it would feel like a bit of California summer, the couple’s previous base, during cold Chicago winters. Lonni Paul’s first challenge was to address the brownstone’s narrow, vertically driven architecture and delineate space so excessive trips up and down the stairs were eliminated. Her second hurdle was the palette. The designer needed a cohesive flow to suit the house: The main level streams from living room to dining room to kitchen, then elevates to the family room and outdoor patio, all within the sight line from the entry foyer. Paul’s solution was to reinterpret the couple’s beloved blue colour scheme to suit the sometimes-cloudy Chicago weather, so unlike the L.A. sunshine that the clients were accustomed to. “I used blue in California to tribute the water,” Paul says. “But in this rowhouse, which doesn’t allow light to pour in from either side, the blue functioned as a tool to create light and airiness that wouldn’t read heavy and dull when the sky turned cold and grey.” Pale blue infuses the living room, decorated in traditional fabrics that include floral linen by Lee Jofa for the window panels, windowpane-plaid on a pair of wing chairs, and Vervain wide blue-and-grey stripes covering an ottoman. The soft colour scheme, which also includes plenty of moodlifting white, allows a bold, graphic Tony Tasset painting hung above the fireplace to command attention. The chandelier is from Circa, and the rug is from Stark. In the adjacent dining room, the blues intensify to cobalt and indigo. A dynamic

36 Design Et Al

damask pattern wraps the walls above classic white wainscoting. Dining chairs covered in rich blue velvet team with a patterned floral rug underfoot to support the colour theme, which sees the blues fade away as it goes to gleaming all-white in the adjoining kitchen. Artwork by Hunt Slonem features bunnies that are painted on a base of indigo-coloured diamond dust. The piece adds shimmer to the room and nods to the grand sparkle of a floating chandelier from Windfall Contemporary Crystal Lighting. The designer choose to create a crisp white kitchen, the veining of Calacatta marble adds an electric presence to the all-white scheme. A Wolf range is a necessary tool for the family gatherings and holidays that the clients’ host. A Breakfast Room with a built-in banquette provides seating on one side of the kitchen table, while a pair of versatile ottomans on the other side can be moved to suit different functions in the space. Like colour, art plays a big role in the home’s design. As art aficionados the clients evaluated the works of emerging artists as well as more established counterparts to discover pieces that spoke to them and enhanced their decorative style. One of their favourite finds presides over the breakfast room’s seating area—an image of a limousine printed on a 120-inch-wide pink sponge. In this room a Lee Industries tufted ottoman contrasts the geometric chevron of the rug. The floor lamp is by Ralph Lauren. Just steps from the kitchen is the spacious deck. A brick fireplace breaks the wooden grid of the lattice walls on the outdoor space. Ample deck space provides room for an outdoor dining area. Heat lamps installed in the ceiling above make it usable even in cooler weather. “The outdoors is what they (the clients) loved about California,” says Paul. The Library is finished in a sophisticated grey palette where subtle patterns add interest. The sofa from Kravet pulls out into a queen sized bed, perfect for accommodating extra guests. The Master Bedroom has a vaulted ceiling and rustic beams add volume and detail. A pair of alabaster lamps from Circa Lighting,

inlaid mother of pearl mirrors from Serena & Lily, and bedside tables from Bernhardt create symmetry on either side of the woodand-iron bed, also from Bernhardt. Drapery fabric is from Duralee. Silk wallpaper is from Phillip Jeffries. For the artwork in the master bedroom, architecture teams up with technology—and represents the fully charged plugged-in activity of this social-media-savvy couple’s existence. Digital photographs, taken by Kevin Lynch and intended to be hung horizontally, were cropped and stretched to fit vertical insets that flank the white fireplace. The oceanic hue of the images complements the luxe blue silk wall covering. The Master Bathroom is a work of art in itself, the airy two-storey master bath/closet suite features a marble-capped tub and a huge shower that showcases a tile design that Paul created—in shades of blue, of course. Cabinets along the walls are fitted with rods, drawers, and shelves to organize the fashionable homeowners’ wardrobes. It also features tiles from Walker Zanger and plumbing fixtures are by Hansgrohe. Wing chairs from Bernhardt are covered in blue linen. Light flows through a glass-encased opening that looks up into a series of closets designed by Lonni Paul on the top floor, used for storing special-occasion and off-season garments. The Guest Room has pink wallpaper from Mary McDonald for Schumacher departs from the home’s blue theme. “This pink has a masculinity to it and reads as the colour of a gentleman’s shirt, not a party dress for a little girl,” Paul says. Lonni Paul’s designs have polished the interiors with elegant flair. The goal was to design a traditional Chicago home that would be a casual and comfortable living environment for a young hip family. The clients believe that Chicago city has everything to offer, their neighbourhood is within walking distance of shops, the restaurants they own, and Lake Michigan. They considered themselves well and truly back home.

5 Minutes with Keira Townsend Company Position within company Website

Tell us a little about your background in design I studied art, fashion design and branding and then gradually progressed to interior design, which I think has always been my main interest since I was a child. My partner, Alastair Keir, and I both worked in the commercial architecture world prior to starting working on residential projects about 8 years ago, which is how Keir Townsend was born. We never looked back, as we both love what we do, as each day there is an opportunity to learn something new or to improve something we have previously done. Today we are 8 strong and undertake both commercial and residential projects. How would you describe your personal interior design style? Contemporary classic, with understated elegance. I do not like minimalism or mock-period design. I believe that everything has its time and there is an art to combining old and new, contemporary and classic, natural and man-made in a way that is comfortable, warm and calming. Where does your design inspiration come from? I grew up in many different countries and a lot of my inspirations come from ethnic and cultural influences of different parts of the world. Travelling is a very important part of my life, however, my biggest inspirations always come from nature. I love using natural materials in my designs. In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense? Despite the fact that technology has made a massive leap in the last decade, I feel there is a strong contrasting trend towards all things natural – from materials used to organic shapes and to a more simplified way of living generally. If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to interior design schemes, what would it be? Make it your priority to know and understand people who will be using the scheme – who they are, what they like and how the space will be used. Taking this knowledge as a basis and guiding clients in a positive manner towards the best possible design solution is definitely the winning formula for every project. How important are The International Design and Architecture Awards as recognition of talent and achievement? Very important. Having looked through the website, I discovered exceptionally talented designers I have never come across before, who deserve for their work to be recognised. The Awards provide a platform to showcase clever and innovative designs in a range of sectors and budgets and for the public

38 Luxe Et Al

Keir Townsend Design Director www.keirtownsend.com

to give their feedback. This is an essential part of cutting edge design and trend development. What projects are you currently working on? We are working on a restaurant in central London, two apartments in South Kensington, a high end hair and beauty salon in South Kensington, private jet and just completing a large house in a private estate in Surrey. What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months? We are constantly striving to use innovative products, as well as develop new finishes and styles with our suppliers. We would like to develop the furniture manufacturing part of business more, as this contributes to the uniqueness and individuality of our designs. Final thoughts; tell us a little more about yourself I work with my husband and we have a fantastic and talented team who supports us. We also have a 4-year old architect in the making, who regularly redecorates our home by drawing his schemes on the walls! Your most treasured possession? I am not hugely into possessions as such. My family comes first. When your family is happy, the home and the interior has a positive energy that is a joy to come home to. Your favourite holiday destination? Sunny eastern destinations, partially because I lived in that part of the world as a child and every time I go back it brings back the happiest memories and inspires me. Your favourite hotel / restaurant / bar? Novikov, but then I am slightly bias! I do like the convenience of a restaurant and the lounge bar being in the same place. Your favourite food and drink? Freshly-cooked seafood, preferably BBQ-ed on the beach! Your favourite way to spend an afternoon? During the week – brainstorming new concept or doing design reviews with my team. On the weekends, escaping to the countryside, we especially love the Cotswolds. If you weren’t a designer, what would you be? A fashion designer. I take great pleasure in my hobby – designing clothes and shoes, which I manufacture for myself, my family and friends in the UK.

“ Spread over eight floors, the layout respects the original floor plan whist also allowing for the flexibility of space required by modern living, ”

XXVI Old Queen Street is a magnificent Grade-II listed mansion, situated in the centre of London’s political heartland of St James’s Park, representing both one of the capital’s most historically significant properties and the pinnacle of London’s luxury design. As one of the only remaining black brick properties in London, the residence represents a uniquely significant house with an aesthetic association to the nation’s most renowned political residence – Number Ten Downing Street. Emma Rickwood , managing director of Space Design and Development said,”The brief was to reconfigure a magnificent Grade-II listed mansion on the perimeter of St James’s Park to its original status as a luxury residential house. A rare example of a Georgian black brick property, it was essential to ensure that the heritage of the home was taken into account at every stage of design.” Having been converted into offices in the early 1960s, the property had been reconfigured so that the elegant Georgian dimensions and striking period features had been obscured or even entirely removed. Space Design & Development undertook a painstaking renovation to restore XXVI Old Queen Street back to a single family home, taking into account both the heritage of the property, its extraordinary surroundings and the high level of luxurious interior finish required to impress today’s most discerning buyers. Experts in historic restoration were consulted at every stage of the process, to ensure that all materials used complement the Georgian provenance of the house, with English Heritage advising on all matters of importance, even the exact shade of black that was used for the restoration of the brick facades. Internally, the home embodies the epitome of modern luxury. Spread over eight floors, the layout respects the original floor plan whist also allowing for the flexibility of space required by modern living, with the interior finishes marrying a warm and intimate home environment with grand and opulent entertaining spaces. The entire project has been designed to pay homage to and to celebrate the unique location of the property, which overlooks one of the capital’s most iconic streets – Birdcage Walk. As the 17th century home to the Royal Menagerie and aviaries tended by

46 Design Et Al

King Charles II, the interior design of XXVI Old Queen Street responds to this historical and regal heritage, with the use of a peacock motif throughout. The bespoke crest is used in subtle bas-relief design within the balustrade of the staircase and within the central tablets of the hand crafted fireplaces. The rich, jewel like tones also form the basis of the colour palette which inspires the décor of the striking ground and first floor reception rooms. The original ‘Piano Nobile’ floors offer both grand interior entertaining spaces and a delightful terrace overlooking St James’s Park, with the form and function of these formal rooms respecting the historical hierarchy of the floor plan. A private garden, enjoyed under license from the Royal household, further extends the entertaining space to the outside. This space had been cleverly designed to be shielded from the public view, yet to also allow the occupier to enjoy the bucolic nature of direct access to the royal park. The lower ground floor kitchen and top floor media room provide space for more informal living. Downstairs, the minimalist bespoke Rossana kitchen includes a plethora of top of the range appliances, all of which are concealed behind sleek sliding-folding doors. The design intent behind this room is for it to feel as beautiful a space as possible, whilst delivering all the functionality and professional grade quality of a kitchen capable of serving an ambassadorial banquet. The central stone and hand brushed bronze island stands elegantly as a piece of furniture, serving to enhance the elegance of the space rather than dominating it with utilitarian function. On the sixth floor terrace, leading directly off from the media room, a 180 degree view can be enjoyed, taking in both Buckingham Palace and Westminster Palace and offering one of the greenest tree top panoramas in London. Like a gem nestled between the mature London planes and oak trees, the fountain of St James’s Park can be seen cascading into the boating lake. The home is arranged over eight storeys and is inextricably linked by the main staircase, which acts as the back-bone of the home. The cantilevered, white limestone staircase, painstakingly recreated by hand, represents a truly impressive example of master craftsmanship and is one of the key features that the design team was passionate to reinstate. This home completes itself with

the use of beautiful bespoke flooring from Fluffy Carpets and Rugs. The creation of the master suite is an example of how the classical envelope has been adapted to best suite contemporary needs. Created over two storeys, the duplex was conceived to offer the principles of a luxury boutique hotel suite within a home. The floors are linked by an internal staircase illuminated by a three metre handmade glass pendant chandelier. The stairs are detailed in under lit glass and stained and book matched Pippia Oak, which recreate the texture and contours of s sting-ray shagreen. This breathtaking area offers an enormous master bedroom with white marble fireplace, two dressing rooms, two cleverly designed and distinctly different bathrooms and a glass walled study area overlooking the central light well and private staircase. The feminine bathroom is particularly spectacular, with a beautiful custom-made marble bath, fashioned from a single piece of stone in a draped form, set in front of three windows overlooking St James’s Park. Further features include hand blown Murano glass taps, an open fire and a floor mosaic of pearl and white marble, a detail further picked up in the feminine dressing room, where mother of pearl borders frame the silk inset carpets. Whilst the period features have been meticulously restored, the property also includes subtly installed contemporary features to enable a number of intelligent technology solutions. A hidden internal lift, concealed behind traditional panelled walls, connects the entire eight storeys. The lift opens out onto every floor and again is a rare and enjoyable feature of a property of this age and stature. The restoration of XXVI Old Queen Street has been an extraordinary journey to recreate the importance of this incredible property. Creating a sense of a real home with both intimate spaces and grand proportions was absolutely vital to the successful delivery of the project. The designs have been meticulously considered to balance the classical building structure together with the elegance and functionality demanded by a high net worth purchaser. The key design philosophy has been a strong and shared vision of the end product, together with exacting detail, relentless pursuit of unique and rare materials and the careful selection of specialist craftsman. It has been an incredible honour to facilitate the realization of one of London’s finest family residence.

Carlisle Design Studio is part of Phoenix Prime - a multi-disciplinary collective of property and design experts covering Brokerage, Architecture, Interior Design and Development Management who offer a holistic turnkey service for the world’s most exclusive real estate investments. Offering a personal and bespoke service, the Carlisle Interior Design team specialize in creating truly unique design solutions working across all business sectors. They employ a breadth of expertise that ensure architecture, interiors, furniture and dressing tie together seamlessly and elegantly to create beautiful world class properties.

“ Everything from the interior architecture, finishes palette, lighting, furniture, artwork, down to dressing items such as embroidered cushions and made to order... ”

Carlisle Design Studio have created a highly bespoke family home in Central London. A 9,000 sq.ft late Victorian terrace house with 4,000 sq.ft basement extension; the property includes a cinema, a 14 metre swimming pool, a spa and a gym. It has been designed specifically for the clients’ day to day living; for their children to grow into, for them to expand their art collection, and to entertain guests. Matthew Carlisle, Director of Carlisle Design Studio, said, “The design needed to be family orientated, accommodating to her sons whilst keeping a mature flavour to the home. It was really more of a collaboration with the client. She had some very strong Ideas about what she wanted. We worked hard to incorporate our own flavour into her eclectic style, which involved having numerous bespoke, modern pieces of furniture made to meld with her own collection of antiques.” From the soft, gallery-like Formal Reception, dark, moody Dining Room, fresh, minimalistic Swimming Pool, and airy and relaxing Family Living Room, every room provides a different atmosphere and style to satisfy the clients’ appetite for design. Details of bespoke fitted joinery, lighting and furniture were thoroughly developed and

56 Design Et Al

coordinated to make sure the style of each space was uncompromised. The Central Staircase with a jewellery inspired chandelier spans 5 floors, and the consistent architectural design elements throughout the house act as the link to all the different spaces, tying the design of the house together throughout. Most of the lighting and furniture began as hand sketches and 3D models. Working closely with artisans all over Europe we have been involved throughout - inspecting prototypes, manufacturing processes and installation. Inspirations for these items broadly range from European Classic, Art Deco, Brutalism, to Latin American Modern. Almost all of the lighting and furniture were bespoke with inspirations from Art Deco, Brutalism and Latin American Modern tied into one. Everything from the interior architecture, finishes palette, lighting, furniture, artwork, down to dressing items such as embroidered cushions and made to order picture frames, were carefully considered from the beginning to ensure a holistic design was achieved. A favourite key aspect of this project is the basement swimming pool. As Carlisle mentioned, “We are particularly proud of the underground swimming pool. We added and extra 4000 square feet to the project and despite not having windows, we created a great open and flowing space. It is an area where a lot of time is spent, so we created an entertainment room and living space with an open and comfortable feel - all under ground!” The design worked so well because of it’s simple, bold and elegant with a touch of dramatic and understated textures all under one roof. Yet, it is a very comfortable and homely design overall.

Olive Design Studio has recently completed a 2,800 square foot apartment in Eaton Place, Belgravia, as a second home for a client who lives overseas. The client’s primary residence is in Singapore and the brief was to subtly introduce a masculine, minimal, middle eastern aesthetic whilst at the same time valuing the very classical, historic interior. Carefully selected chandeliers were chosen to reflect the need to maintain the integrity of the period features of the property and timeless Italian furniture was introduced to enhance the feeling of opulence while providing a key bridge linking the classic with the styles of today. The core palette was an earthy, textured scheme introducing Asian floral prints and pops of orange and teal blues which bring the interior to life in a very gentle, eclectic yet timeless way. Providing a discerning edge to the design, collectable retro Serge Mouille floor and wall lights together with specially commissioned artwork have been subtly added to reflect the client’s personal taste.

A Home for the Perfect Hosts Looe Beach House by Camellia Interiors

72 Design Et Al

Design Et Al 73

Camellia Interiors was launched in 2003 by Elaine Skinner as a small interior design business on a Falmouth high street with classic, Cornish sea views. As it evolved into a highly reputed practice, Camellia moved to Newquay to give easy access to their clients and to centralise their studio. They have been expanding and knocking down walls ever since – becoming a team of twelve which includes their dedicated design, support, contracting and marketing departments. Since then, Camellia Interiors offers expert project management solutions to help breathe luxury into their projects – making it bespoke and unique, whilst maximising their clients return on investment. One of their latest briefs is a beautiful waterfront home in Looe. This three storey 1960s property was renovated twice before Camellia began work on it. It is situated next to the seafront and is almost built in to a cliff face above the beach with luxurious views.

“ To allow the clients to be the perfect hosts, two en-suite bathrooms were introduced to the top floor to create a total of a five en-suite bedroom property to host a minimum of twelve people. ”

The clients bought the house as a private family holiday home and approached Camellia to project manage the entire renovation of their property and grounds, with future plans for another smaller beach house on the site close by. As the clients required a full project management service for their home, the complete scheme was designed very early in the project which resulted in a cohesive plan that the client understood and approved from the outset. Their vision was a space for large groups of friends and family to stay, as well as hosting large parties to entertain. Bespoke wine storage was a must alongside a purpose built bar, with space for a pinball machine and a football table for gaming. To allow the clients to be the perfect hosts, two en-suite bathrooms were introduced to the top floor to create a total of a five ensuite bedroom property to host a minimum of twelve people. All of the original aluminium windows in the property had to be replaced and reconfigured to satisfy fire regulations and to insulate the property, with wooden sliding doors and floor to ceiling windows. For relaxation, the clients requested a library space and to reinstate the wood burning fireplace as they planned to spend their first Christmas in the property. Camellia suggested the reconfiguration of the internal layout to increase the room sizes and maximise available daylight and

74 Design Et Al

consequentially the views. The walls of glass facing the seafront act as a sun trap for the entire home– allowing the clients to soak in the beautiful sea views. Camellia wanted to make the most of this offering for them and designed around it. The interesting architecture meant that Camellia had to install bespoke furniture and storage solutions. Designing around the unusual shapes and structures was a fun challenge that the practice rose to. The space, no matter what the angle, has been utilised to its best and helps the overall design work well and flow fluently throughout. Internally, the colour palette reflects the very blue sea and golden sands of the immediate coastal environment; greys and silvers were also noticed from the surrounding rocks and were selected as part of the property’s scheme. Through the centre of the building tones of golden yellows flow from the main entrance on the top level to the kitchen and living area on the middle level and the sun room on the ground floor. “The house naturally divided into three as its long and elongated into the cliff side. The middle section looks directly to the sunset, the right hand side is the water and left views to the rocks,” said Camellia as she describes her favourite aspect of the project. “The client was brave enough to allow us to take this into the interiors. The middle section is golden tones, the right is shades of blue and the left is a mix of greys and yet it all melts together. As you drop down through the 3 floors this still translates. The bedrooms reflect the water, sunset and rocks in their natural place as it reacts to the stunning surroundings outside.” Camellia installed contemporary Italian furniture made with wenge timber which is not often seen or used in the UK – highlighting how original this project is. The bespoke furniture and internal doors were also created in wenge, and the front door finished with an antique brass door handle – the perfect statement to the property’s entrance. The team fulfilled the clients’ needs and wishes of having a fun holiday home by the lavish, south coast of Cornwall. Camellia met their brief and design challenges and as a result gave the clients their South West investment that they were looking for. The clients were so pleased with the outcome that Camellia are beginning phase two of the project – the family’s personal beach house.

David James Architects is an award winning practice with experience in both contemporary and traditional styles and their projects cover a wide range of disciplines. These include private houses, conversions and refurbishments, large apartment blocks, commercial developments, and alterations to Grade 1 & 2 listed buildings. In addition they also offer a full interior design service. Their comprehensive architectural service includes the initial site appraisal and planning application with supporting 3-D computer imagery, through to building regulation drawings and detailed design.

“ This design meets the client’s brief of creating a contemporary house using natural materials, which will ensure timeless architecture, while still providing privacy from neighboring houses. ”

David James Architects can design and project-manage your build, from start to finish – ensuring a unique, dynamic yet practical design solution. For this particular brief, this luxurious detached house with integral double garage is set on this prestigious road in Canford Cliffs, Poole. This area boasts a sullivan setting and has close proximity to blue flag beaches and the picturesque Poole harbour, which is the second largest natural harbour in the world. Located on Nairn Road, a quiet residential street in this sought after area, this site in question is level and then drops away with a steep treed incline bordering onto a neighbouring a fabulous golf course. The client’s brief was to create a contemporary house using natural materials, ensuring timeless architecture. It was imperative to provide privacy from neighbouring houses. The house was to have four ensuite bedrooms, with an open plan living area, cinema room, study, separate dinning / lounge area and double garage. The interior layout creates rooms that could form part of the main open plan feel of the house whilst the clever use of double doors provides the opportunity to create more

84 Design Et Al

intimate spaces. The house was designed to have a statement entrance hall, ensuring an impressive sense of arrival. A further feature was to create flow from the house to an outdoor living area. The rear terrace expands the full width of the house and is raised above the ground below, which drops away ensuring a sense of privacy amongst the surrounding treed area. From the road, the house in question is very distinct with a subtle palette of colours created from the use of a mixture of stone, render, glass and aluminium, ensuring striking architectural forms. The boundary fence and gate provide a strong contrast with iroko timber, while the stone piers link back to the solidity of the house itself. This is a impressive yet very versatile family home. This theme of using stone cladding creates a sense of solidity, enhancing the dynamic open timber staircase. Walnut treads are expressed with a warm glow from LED strip lighting thereby ensuring the floating effect. The double volume space is broken with first floor bridges connecting the uppers rooms. David James said, “A key aspect of the project is the impressive cavernous entrance hall with a ceiling height of 6m. A sizeable roof light floods light into this space, encompassing a central floating timber staircase with glass balustrading. This appears to float out of the spine stone wall of the house. This same stone is used to clad the exterior of the house, bringing the interior and exterior together.” “This design meets the client’s brief of creating a contemporary house using natural materials, which will ensure timeless architecture, while still providing privacy from neighboring houses, and has all the accommodation as would be expected in a house of this caliber, “ James commented.

Designers should be like water, easily flowing and versatile enough to fit within any container. Bespoke designs cannot be mass produced

if they are to be informed by the Clients’ individual tastes, needs and influences. This continuous dexterity of inspirations is the flame that keeps the passion for design burning.” Beijing Chinoiserie Villa type S3’s interior uses simple neoclassical framework to build a spacious interior. Adding Chinese motifs and patterns as decorative details emphasises the contemporary yet traditional characteristics. Throughout the space, one can feel the true ambience and spirit of Chinese tradition. There are a total of five floors with great consideration made to complete functional spaces and thoroughfares. Detailed space planning reflects emphasis placed on the comfort and requirements of the future villa owner. The villa represents the true meaning of bespoke design. Multiple western and Chinese elements and decoration details are utilized in the design. These elements are shown throughout, with the Huizhou architectural arch details, the common carvings of stone pedestals that are shaped as the plum blossom, the imperial decoration of the dragon scales. The texture rich travertine stone, with its calming colour and elegant appearance, is used throughout the majority of the large area. Furthermore, combination and mixed use of leather with brass, stone and wood, provide a diverse and luxurious elegance within the space. With the use of bespoke furniture company, Turri , the project really tied itself together with the use of their furniture pieces that incorporated all the projects colours.

Every design brief has its own challenges and surprises. The Interior Design team make it their prerogative to approach each project separatel with no preconceived sense of style or design. A complete renovation of a two bedroom ground floor apartment within a Grade II listed block located opposite Harrods, Knightsbridge. Boscolo were commissioned to redesign the whole apartment for their client who is a young male entrepreneur. With family overseas, the purpose of the apartment was to be a bachelor pad for most of the year, with a secondary bedroom and multifunctional living spaces which could entertain guests when they visited.

Designed for intimate dinner parties, as well as live display cooking, it was key for the culinary client that the kitchen that could act as the focal point of the property; a space to celebrate as well as to celebrate in. With a great deal of space available it would have been easy to make the property feel cold, but with a bespoke automated lighting scheme, as well as a considered choice of furnishings we made sure this wasn’t the case. “Our favourite aspect is the utilisation of the space we created, which makes it perfect for hosting, delivered by the open plan layout of the kitchen,” said Dana Doron, Business Developer for Boscolo. “However, with the open plan design, the kitchen could feel pretty sparse, so we included a dropped ceiling detail in order to make the space feel more fitted and intimate. With the wine easily accessible from the neighbouring bar area, the drinks will flow at the kitchen’s many parties. And with the inclusion of a breakfast table extending off of the island, as well as a ledge facing the hob, there is room for more informal entertaining, with the scope for live demonstrations. Thankfully, with the glorious eye of Boscolo photographer, Christina Bull, these images truly show the beauty of this project.
